DECEMBER 2013 Dear Our Towne Readers, As another year comes to a end, I am excited for the Holiday Season and reflect on all of the good things in my life that I am grateful for. Thank you to all of my family, friends and community members who have supported me in 2013. I am very grateful to the Our Towne businesses that have trusted me to be apart of their organizations in 2013! I hope you all realize that I would do whatever I can to connect you with potential customers & supporters. As 2014 begins, I am looking forward to working you, and others, in hopes of bringing you closer to your sales goals! This December issue is filled with over 2 full pages of fun events in our community. Get out and enjoy the company of other Our Towne community members and embrace the joy of the season. Please remember to shop local. They rely on all of us to stay in business! We must support them, or they won’t sustain. It can be a struggle to attract loyal customers. At this time of year, when we have to purchase many goods & services, it is important to support those businesses in our own community. If I can ask one thing of you, it would be to mention to our advertisers that you saw them in Our Towne! They invest money in advertising & promotion, and it is so very important for them to hear that you are noticing! I wish you all a happy, safe and peaceful season. Our next issue will be the “Winter Issue,” that covers January & February events and community programs. Until then, enjoy the remainder of 2013 and maybe I will see you around Our Towne. Thank you for reading & Happy Holidays! Jennifer Felts

The Our Towne Spotlight Shines On... Steven Daniels and Teresa Eddy, owner/operators of Capital Sawmill Service are also happy to be the proprietors of the unique gift shop, The Gallery at Capital Saw Mill. They provide tree removal, portable saw milling as well as landscape design and installation in the Capital Region. As an arborist, Steven Daniels brings a lifetime of experience cutting trees to the Albany area. In 1980, he formed Steven Daniels Tree Service in Westchester, NY, starting a second generation of tree companies. He arrived in the Albany area in April of 2006 and with the assistance of his wife and attorney, Teresa Eddy, opened Capital Sawmill Service. Although he continues to take down trees, he’s set apart from others tree companies by being able to mill the trees into lumber right at your home with his portable band sawmill. Large lumber mills can’t stop production to make the custom and specialty cuts available at Capital Sawmill. Custom cutting and re-sawing is available to walkins, something for everyone, from truck decking to mantel pieces. There are free form slabs, bar tops, locust posts and various sized timbers. Stop by and see our current inventory and check out our mail box posts and signs. Custom orders are no problem. We also have samples of our lumber stock and can take your custom orders for furniture, bar tops, counter tops, chainsaw carvings In June of 2012, Steven and Teresa opened The Gallery at Capital Sawmill which showcases Steven’s rustic handmade furniture that is simple, yet elegant. Also, many one-of-a kind gifts are made by the very talented people of our community and surrounding areas. We feature favorite locals such as painter/hand carver Jim Bollbach and potter Rich Reiner and many others.

5 Myths and Facts About Pets in Pain “My pet isn’t in pain.” We hear clients say this a lot. Pets can’t talk to us in traditional ways but there are signs that all is not well. Pain management is not only compassionate, it also helps the healing process and may prevent further complications caused by uncontrolled pain. Here are five common myths and truths about pets and pain. Myth: Animals do not feel pain. All mammals share the same anatomical components of the pain pathway. Even though your dog or cat can’t tug on your shirtsleeve and say “I’ve got a stomach ache,” they feel pain. Fact: There are different types of pain. Acute pain is something that occurs quickly, such as through surgery, an injury or infection. Chronic pain is usually slow to develop, is long lasting and can be difficult to detect. Myth: Animals tolerate pain better than people do. Animals often hide pain. In a predator/prey world, showing pain makes an animal vulnerable. By the time we see the obvious signs, it’s likely your pet is experiencing intense pain. Fact: Common signs of pets in pain include whining, whimpering, being unusually quiet, restlessness, panting, pacing, circling, acting out of character (shy, aggressive), seeking more attention than usual, unable to get comfortable or licking/ aggravating a wound or surgery site. Myth: Pain plays an important role in limiting an animal’s movement during recovery after surgery or trauma. In reality, when an animal is in pain, it is often restless and agitated and it does not promote healing. When animals are comfortable with pain relief, they are more likely to rest and leave surgical sites and injuries alone. Fact: Treatment (dependent on the cause of the pain) may include medications, supplements, physical therapy, laser therapy, acupuncture, and just as with humans, sometimes dropping a little weight does the trick. Myth: My pet is limping, but it isn’t in pain. When humans limp, it’s likely because something hurts. The same is true for your pet. Limping is a sign of pain. Fact: Cats are notorious for hiding pain. The absence of signs does not mean your cat isn’t in pain. Myth: My pet is moving slow because it’s getting old. Age and slow do not necessarily go hand in hand. As we age, we don’t start moving slower. We move slower because our muscles, joints and/or back hurt.

Women and Smoking: Bad News, Good News You've come a long way, baby. But really, now, who wants this kind of progress…? Women who smoke are at much greater risk of death from lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) than they were 20 years ago. In fact, deaths from smoking are at an all-time high among women in the U.S. Why? Probably because women have started smoking earlier, are smoking longer, and smoke more each day than women did in the past.1 A large American Cancer Society research study also links smoking to breast cancer. During about a year of follow-up, the rate of new cases of invasive breast cancer was 24 percent higher in smokers than in nonsmokers.2 These are just a couple of new findings. You probably already know that smoking increases the risk for lung and other cancers, as well as the risk for infertility and low birth weight in babies. Against this troubling backdrop, however, there is something positive to report. People who quit smoking between ages 25 and 34 can gain back a decade they otherwise would have lost as lifetime smokers. Even quitting later in life can buy back some time. There's other encouraging news: Your chances of a heart attack or stroke go down if you quit. The benefits of being smokefree can add so much life back into your day to day activities. That's all fine and well, you might say, but quitting is easier said than done. Of course, that's true. But you've got more help at your disposal than ever before. Aside from counseling, quit-smoking support groups, and smoke-free smartphone apps, you can also take advantage of quit-smoking products we carry in our store. Let me know if want to discuss our available products. If you've tried to quit more than once, you might want to try a prescription medication such as varenicline (Chantix) and the antidepressant bupropion (Zyban). Some people also combine one of these medications with a nicotine patch such as Nicoderm. I can walk you through options like these. Or, if your doctor has written a prescription, I can answer any questions you may have.

Here are some other tips that may make it easier for you to quit smoking: •Get rid of all tobacco products and ashtrays ahead of time. •Ask others not to smoke around you or to leave evidence of cigarettes where you can see them. Also tell them not to buy you smokes after you quit, even if you ask them to. •Change your routines for a while so you're less likely to trigger the desire to smoke. •Find relaxation techniques that work well for you. But minimize drinking alcohol. It may actually derail your efforts. When you feel an urge coming on, find a way to distract yourself—make a phone call, go for a walk, or come talk to me. I'll cheer you on!

KIDS BOOK REVIEW The Boxcar Children By Gertrude Chandler Warner I would recommend The Boxcar Children, by Gertrude Chandler Warner. The story begins when the children Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny run away from an orphanage and find a boxcar in the woods next to a village to live in. Henry found a job in the village at Doctor Moore’s house. Jessie found a lost dog that had a thorn in its foot. Jessie pulled the thorn out of his foot. Jessie named the dog “Watch. Jessie, Benny, and Violet found a dump with lots of supplies that they could use to bake with or eat with. Henry ran a race and won. He shook hands with his grandfather and got $25 and a silver trophy. Violet gets sick. The children’s grandfather finds them. The children go live at their grandfather’s house. Jessie and Benny get homesick. Their grandfather moves the Boxcar to his yard.

Snapshot by Daryl Bart Earlier this year, I started thinking about what photo would be on our holiday card (don’t judge me – we’re all allowed our little slice of crazy). I did a quick look thru what we had so far and I realized something BIG. I’m not in many of my family pictures. Adding to this – we had 2 great family trips in the past year – and one could assume, by looking at the mementos, that I wasn’t even on the trip. So, I got to thinking – if I am not in the photos of my own lif, am I missing out somehow? So, I was pretty upset by the realization that I was hiding from the lens. I’m my own worst enemy here. I’ve struggled with my self-image for a life time. I know we’re all usually more critical of ourselves – but even though I’d label myself an optimist, a half-full sort, truth be told, I never learned to love me fully…just for me. I always had an “If, When, Then, Someday” plan in my head, but those days never came. Around this same time, I had a real life epiphany. I was talking with a personal trainer & lamenting that my habits were not getting me the goals I wanted. She told me something in a way I had never heard it before. She said to me “Wow – you eat healthy, you exercise, get sleep, have happy kids and like your job. You manage your stress and even find time for some personal hobbies (like writing). You have got to find some way to congratulate yourself for your excellent life MAINTENANCE”…that was the key – I never gave myself credit for maintaining a positive & healthy life. It was true that my actions weren’t getting me on the cover of Women’s Health, No I don’t have a literary agent, yes my jeans size were in the double digits..BUT truth be told, I do a lot of things right. Only when I could acknowledge that my current actions were positive, worthy even, and not feel guilty or jealous or disappointed– could I identify which habits I needed to change.
The Teen Book Review by Allison Felts
Ender’s Game Ender’s Game by Orison Scott Card is a fantastic book for anyone who loves science fiction. I thought it was a very original book, and it kept me excited until the end. When Ender Wiggin is six years old he lives with his parents, his mean older brother Peter, and his favorite person, Valentine, his sister. One day after a conflict at school a man named Colonel Graff appears at the Wiggin’s door. He asked to recruit Ender for battle school in outer space. Humans are preparing for a third invasion with an alien species, and are taking children and training them to be soldiers. Ender agrees to go with Colonel Graff. The first book in the series goes through Enders experience at Battle school, and eventually Command school. Graff thinks Ender is special and could lead their army into the third invasion, and destroy their species.
It happened both in slow motion & like a ton of bricks. BANG! I gained clarity that day. I had been misplacing my energies – I kept expecting different results from actions that were already giving me outcomes but I was ignoring them. The gratitude started flowing – an appreciation for being a good wife, mom, friend & neighbor. At 45 years old, this old dog learned a few new tricks – I identified a few habits that I could change – drink more water, take on some real issues that affected my kids, read more & give back – to me. I committed to and completed a fitness program that I could incorporate into my life – for life. I am happy, and proud, to say that over the months I saw different results. I lost weight I never thought I could, I made friends I didn’t know I needed & I found time I swore wasn’t available. So now my goals have had to change. The habits I want to tweak are different ones. And I’m starting with the camera. I am going to be in the picture. When my kids look back over the chronicle of our lives together – I want them to say “Mom was present, and she made an impact – and have the photo to prove it” So I hope we all can make some changes in the 2014, that impact us in ways that might be unforeseen at the moment – but become clear. We all deserve to live a life worthy of the photo album.
Holidays 2013 Daryl Bart Dcbart1@gmail.com I enjoyed this book very much and a character that is memorable to me is Enders sister, Valentine. When Ender goes to Battle school it seems like only Valentine misses him. She has been writing him but hasn’t been getting responses. Eventually years after Enders brother, Peter, has a plan to help silence conflicts on Earth, and eventually “Conquer” the Earth. He asks excellent writer Valentine to become an internet writer with him. Together they become Locke and Demosthenes. Ender’s Game was a wonderful book, but I also saw the movie. I thought the movie was great and displayed the book well. The only part they didn’t include was what was happening on earth with Enders family while he’s in space. I was looking forward to the parts about Locke and Demosthenes, but those weren’t included. Overall I thought the movie was great. Ender’s Game by Orison Scott Card is an original book for ages 11 and up. I suggest this book to anyone who likes science fiction, and likes the book to movie comparison. The characters were all very interesting to learn about, and the story is very exciting. Ender’s Game is an awesome book and I give it 5 stars!

The store is nicely organized by theme, so items are easy to find. Browsing around the store is such a treat! Like many of our other Our Towne business owners, Patti grew up locally and enjoys working in the community she calls home. She is very generous with donations to local groups for their fundraisers and raffles. She believes in giving back to the community that has supported her business for 20 years. Her generous spirit has greatly benefited many local organizations through the years. Twenty years ago, she started her business as a means to sell her own crafts and creations. “Any crafter will tell you, your home can hold only so many creations. I realized that I had to sell them!” Formally known as Field Flowers, she changed the name to The Cross Eyed Owl after years of being perceived as a florist. She reached out to the community, and had a contest to find a new name. Five years ago, The Cross Eyed Owl was born… Patti proudly holds the title of “The Best Gift Shop in the Capital Region,” by readers of the Capital Region Living Magazine. For three years in a row, she has earned readers & shoppers recognition. With their large and unique assortment of items, they have become the go-to shop for gifts for all occasions. Patti says the best part of owning her shop is the interaction and relationships she has with her customers. “You hear about the births, birthdays, weddings and special people that my customers are shopping for. Even sad occasions, when someone wants to pick out a memorial gift to remember a loved one that has passed. We enjoy being a part of the celebrations and moments in our customer’s lives . We take joy in that relationship. “ The vast assortment of gift items from Jim Shore, Willow Tree & Yankee Candle, are the largest in the area. Bring in your Holiday Shopping list and let the staff at The Cross Eyed Owl find the perfect gifts with you this season. USE IT OR LOSE IT… My staff gets flooded with calls at this time of the year with questions about dental plans, annual spending reports, HSAs & FSAs and squeezing in college students on break. We’re happy to help. But hardest thing for us to do is watch patients with unused dental benefit just leave them behind. The fortunate folks with dental benefits through an employer, spouse or parent have the opportunity to really maximize them. Benefits often are a fixed annual amount – say $1500 per year. Unused benefits will not rollover to the next year…and so if you have work to do (cleanings & fillings & consultations for maybe an implant or something else) it’s worth trying to use a little. Even if you don’t need any dental treatment specifically, getting among other things: regular cleaning, getting up to date on diagnosic xrays, fluoride, sealants, consulations, night guards and long range planning. Getting in now, we can detect early signs of cavities, oral cancer & periodontal disease which are often silent and not painful and if there is anything – plan for next year. For Students: Most insurance them to stay with a parents plan if enrolled in college and up to age 26 – but criteria varies. If there’s a status change in 2014 – you’ll want to know. You’ve worked hard to keep their smile beautiful – but once off of your insurance – how high of a priority will paying for dental work be on their list? We hope high, but know from experience, that young adults, even with a great dental track record, often ignore their dentist if not on a parents plan. Yes, quality comprehensive dentistry costs money, but, by taking advantage of all your plan offers you can save down the road. No dental problems ever get better by themselves & often get more painful, more complicated and more expensive to fix. Simple cavities can turn into root canals, chipped and lost fillings turn into crowns, bridges or implants. Let your dental staff help you maximize your benefits, review any outstanding plans or get you in under the wire. The dentist just might save you something. Every day, we work with our neighbors, government, schools, business and other not for profits to make sure everyone, regardless of age, income or background has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. To fulfill this promise Ys require strong cause-driven leadership to effect lasting personal and social change in our three areas of focus:
FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT FOR HEALTHY LIVING FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY The Y reaches the community in many ways through our annual support campaign that allows financial assistance to all for programs and services we provide every day. In the area of healthy living the Y offers programs such as diabetes prevention, peddle for Parkinson’s and Livestrong for cancer survivors. The Y helps to provide backpacks to students in need of school supplies each year. Our organization continues to help families and individuals especially through the Holiday season with supporting our local food pantries with a food collection and sponsoring families in need. We have in the past and will continue to support families and children during the holiday season with a toy drive and warming tree donations of hats and gloves for families. These are some of the ways the Y helps the community outside its doors and we look for ways to partner and collaborate with other organizations to support our community. BUYERS
AND SELLERS SHOULD BE SMART ABOUT RADON BY CATHY GRAZIANO
If you are thinking of buying a home or selling your home, have it tested for Radon. You can’t see, smell or taste radon, yet exposure to the gas can make you sick. In fact, the Surgeon General (January 2005) has warned that radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today after smoking. Radon comes from the natural (radioactive) breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water and may get into the air you breathe by penetrating your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation. It has been found in all parts of the country and can cause a dangerous high indoor radon level in any home. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, roughly one out of every 15 homes in the U.S. is estimated to have elevated radon levels. While it is not a requirement that you test for radon when you make an offer to buy a home, it is a good idea to ask for a Radon Inspection Contingency. If you are building a new home, you may want to ask if passive radon-resistant techniques are used. Every home should be tested, even if it was built radon-resistant or already has a radon reducing system installed. A Radon Inspection Contingency can put some structure into getting a “short-term” radon test done on a home to make sure the levels of radon on the lowest level of the home are below the 4.0 pCi/L level. That level was a target set by the U.S. Congress for indoor air quality, and the U.S. EPA enforces that mandate.

CERTIFIED COLLISION REPAIR CENTER
If you are preparing to sell your home, you should test for radon before you even put it on the market. Have all the paperwork and testing data to show the prospective buyer. This can save valuable time during a real estate transaction. The quickest way to detect radon is with short-term tests. The most common detectors are charcoal canisters, alpha track, electret ion chamber, continuous monitors and charcoal liquid scintillation. Test the home in the lowest level that you currently live in, or a lower level not currently used, but which a buyer could use for living space. Elevated radon levels can be remedied with a radon-reduction system. Your real estate professional can recommend local qualified radon testers. For more information view The Home Buyer’s and Seller’s Guide to Radon at www. epa.gov/radon. There are also several Radon Hotline numbers operated by the National Safety Council in Partnership with EPA found there. T IPS F ROM T HE S CRAPSTER
Happy Holidays to Everyone! A special note of thanks and gratitude to all of our new and existing customers, with many lasting friendships created as well. I’d also like to give kudos to all the local Our Towne and Your Home Towne publishers, whose tireless dedication to putting out these excellent publications really helps local businesses grow and prosper. Thank-you all! Our company is Scrapster, LLC, the Capital Region’s premier NO COST* scrap metal and appliance removal and recycling service (*conditions may apply, please call for details). We are a local family owned business and cater to both residential and business customers within a 50 mile radius around Albany, NY. We are fully insured, convenient, and reliable and always provide top Quality work. Everything is properly recycled, disposed of or donated. Scrapster additionally provides LOW COST junk removal, TV removal and clean out services. We are an official New York State DEC approved location for business or personal computer and electronics recycling. We are also fully EPA608 certified for Freon (refrigerant) recovery and removal from refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and coolers. We are doing our part to help protect the environment both now and for the future. Originally I started in 2010 with one truck (a Ford Ranger… one step above a shopping cart) and my driveway doubling as a storage depot (see Wife = not happy). Today I have several employees, 4 trucks and 6000 square feet of warehouse recycling operations. In early 2013 we passed the one million pound mark in recycled scrap metal (600,000+ total pounds this year alone) and our newly expanded junk removal and clean out services have quadrupled in size and are growing every day. A competitor once asked was I “…still going down into basements?” The answer is and always will be: YES! “Don’t Worry, We Can Take It!” isn’t just our company slogan, it is the back bone of what we do. Large or small, easy or difficult…we go where others won’t, to take out the things they can’t, anytime we have to, to get the job done right… safely, correctly and on time. Please call us at (518) 505-5055. We will remove the items from exactly where they are located-you don’t need to do a thing. Please Like Us on Facebook and visit our website at www.scrapster.com for more information, specials & coupons, recycling information, or to schedule an appointment.

DEAR ANGIE Dear Angie, Every year for the holidays, my sister & her family go overboard on the Christmas gifts. We set a budget, but she never sticks to it. My family is on a very tight budget, and we just can't give any more than we do. It is awkward, when I give her a $25 gift (per the budget) and she gives me a purse or clothing that is obviously MUCH more expensive. I know my kids are starting to notice, and it is just uncomfortable. What should I do? Frustrated in Castleton Dear Frustrated, There is always one in every family! If you have been reading Dear Angie, you know I'm all about honesty. Just come right out and tell your sister that the budget is $25. and you would appreciate if she could please just spend $25. You seem to always go above and beyond which is so sweet but you are starting to get uncomfortable with the kids noticing. If she doesn't comply then enjoy the extra gifts and just say "It is what it is." Happy Holidays, Angie
