T HE O UR T OWNE S POTLIGHT S HINES O N ... Bud’s Florist & Greenhouses Jennifer Day Clarke grew up in Schodack, attended Maple Hill High School and is a now a proud business owner of Bud’s Florist & Greenhouses in Castleton. The stories of Our Towne business owners are always interesting to me… how did they get where they are today? Jennifer worked for Judy Schultz at Bud’s Florist many years ago while she was in High School. After attending Ulster County Community College for Business, she went into the Medical Billing field for 10 years. Even while she was working full-time, she always had her own small business on the side. “Oh, What A Day Events,” was a successful party planning business. She planned many parties & weddings as a member of the Association of Bridal Consultants. It was hard & stressful work; but she loved being creative and the process of creating a one-of-a kind event for someone’s special day. Once her son,Vincent, was born, she decided to stay home with him and devote all of her “spare” time to her own business. The business took off and was extremely successful. So successful, that she had very little time for her family. After working 7 days a week planning parties, weddings & private events, Jennifer was thrilled when she heard about a full time opportunity back at Bud’s Florist. When Judy decided that it was time to retire, after decades in the business, Jennifer & her husband, Nick, stepped in and took over the reins at Bud’s Florist & Greenhouses in 2013. With deep family roots in Schodack, Jennifer & Nick are proud to own a business that has been a part of their community and lives for as long as they can remember. The past year and a half has been filled with many ups and downs and credits their families for the continued success. Family members come and help out at the shop and pitch in however and whenever they are needed. They are deeply grateful for all of their support. Jen notes that she can’t “thank her parents enough for all of their support.” Nick, too, says that they could not have “pursued this dream without the support of their family and talented, reliable staff.”
Since purchasing the business, Jennifer has changed the website so that now, when you order from them, you are buying direct. They have cut out the national “middle men” and now use a site that allows you to buy direct from the local florist that you know and trust. Jennifer offers classes during the holiday seasons so that you can create your own centerpieces. On December 16th, 17th & 18th they will have a class where you can make your own wreath, swag or centerpiece to keep or gift. It is a fun night where many Our Towne residents bring a friend for a creative night out. The Holiday Season is a busy time for Bud’s Florist & Greenhouses. They have all of your fresh decorating needs. In the shop, they have many decorated trees of various styles and themes that can be purchased. Including the ornaments, tree & lights, you can easily have a beautifully designed tree in your home with little effort (or decorating & designing experience). Many fresh trees are available, along with custom fresh wreaths, swags, cemetery blankets & toppers, house plants, poinsettia plants in a variety of colors, candy and gifts. Bud’s Florist & Greenhouse is located at 1614 Route 9 in Castleton, just 1.5 miles down from the Routes 9 & 20 split. They are open Monday-Friday from 9-6, Saturday from 9-4 and Sunday 10-3. You can view their beautiful arrangements and find out more about their greenhouse plants on the website: BUDSFLORAL.COM. Please call them at 518-732-7563 to place your next order, or to set up a Bridal Consultation. Also, be sure to “LIKE” them on Facebook for current specials & announcements. This year, visit Bud’s Florist & Greenhouses for all of your fresh decorating needs. They thank all of their loyal customers for allowing them to be apart of the big, small, happy & sad occasions in life! The Clarke family wishes to extend a Happy & Healthy Holiday to all in Our Towne.
Jennifer hopes that moving forward Bud’s will continue to provide a fairly priced, excellent quality product with personal service. She continues to take classes and attends Flower Shows so that she can bring a “modern day” design to her arrangements. She enjoys working with each customer, to find out what their own personal needs are, and creates arrangements & pieces to fit the feeling of the occasion. For one funeral, they even designed a NY Yankee flower memorial on a wooden board that Nick created. “Getting to know the customer, the occasion & their budget is always important. Flowers are a symbol of their sentiments & should be as individual as the person receiving them.”

DECEMBER 2014 Dear Our Towne readers,
Jennifer Felts OWNER • PUBLISHER
It is hard to believe that the year is coming to an end and the Holiday Season is upon us. This issue is packed with many small businesses that desperately need your support during the holiday season. Small, local businesses build strong neighborhoods by sustaining communities, linking neighbors, and contribute more to local causes than big box & online stores. Your dollars spent at locally-owned businesses have three times the impact on your community as dollars spent at national chains. When shopping locally, you simultaneously create jobs, fund more city services through sales tax, invest in neighborhood improvement and promote community development. The mission of Our Towne Magazine is to support and promote local businesses & the community each month. My goal is to "connect the community" by donating 20% of each issue back to organizations to promote their causes & events. This year, I launched Our Towne Magazine on Facebook; to remind you of community events, news and advertiser promotions. Utilizing social media to fulfill my mission of "Connecting the Community" has been well received by readers & advertisers. I have over 1,000 followers and would like to double that in 2015! Please make sure you LIKE Our Towne Magazine (Rensco) on Facebook so that you can stay in the loop and keep your magazine in the house until the new one arrives. I will often remind you of coupons that are in each issue. I wish you all a very happy, healthy, peaceful & safe Holiday Season. May you find joy in the small & simple moments with your friends and family. Thank you for reading Our Towne Magazine. Magazine I feel very grateful to own this publication and have the opportunity each day to help other small business owners reach their highest potential. When you do visit the advertisers in this issue, please let them know that you saw them in Our Towne. Happy Holidays & New Year!

Comprehensive Physical Therapy Solutions, PLLC is excited to offer the latest in Balance technology! We now proudly offer complete balance testing and balance therapy in our office. Our balance system offers what others cannot! While other systems on the market are good, they only measure a person’s balance through footplates. The Equilibrate System from Balance Engineering sets itself apart from other balance systems by integrating 2 cameras in addition to sensors in the footplates to obtain the most objective information enabling the Physical Therapist to accurately assess a person’s true balance! Because the Equilibrate System uses cameras it can capture the complete individual and assess not only what the legs are doing but it captures that person as a whole (upper and lower body together).

The balance test takes less than 15 minutes to complete. The test can be printed and sent to the patient’s healthcare provider. The test is saved and can be compared to follow up tests to track a patient’s progress. We can also track daily progress! We are able to graph reports and the person is able to see for themselves what the balance issues are! At Comprehensive Physical Therapy Solutions, PLLC we can now objectively screen and treat balance loss due to: *Concussion *Leg injuries *Hip/knee/ankle surgery *Stroke *MS *Falls risk This is a great tool for assessing a baseline for athletes of all ages! We can also use this system during a course of Physical Therapy to assist a person in regaining the balance that they have lost by having that person use the Therapy activities built into this system. This is a great tool because you can actually see the progress! We will be offering screenings for the public beginning in January. For more information contact Comprehensive Physical Therapy Solutions, P.L.L.C. at 915-1452 or at Comprehensivephysical.com. Like us on Facebook! https://www. facebook.com/CPTSny?fref=ts

SHOULD I
LIST NOW? AFTER THE HOLIDAY’S? OR, WAIT UNTIL SPRING?
BY CATHY GRAZIANO
Should I put my properties up now, or wait until spring? I have found myself answering this question frequently. The first part of the answer depends on a seller's personal goals. If you want or need to sell then yes! If a seller has no place to go or there are other external factors that pushes their timeline out it might make sense to wait until those answers are figured out and there is less uncertainty. This is the case for any seller at any time of the year. Here are the main advantages for a seller to list now instead of waiting until spring: In the spring, how many other sellers will have waited? They may have been waiting a year or so until the market got better or perhaps just figured spring was the best time to list their property. So come March, April and May, there will be that much more competition! By listing now, you avoid that potential competition. I have found that in the months when inventory is down sellers with a well-maintained and nicely presented home can actually obtain a higher price. Take advantage of the fact that some of your competition is holed up for the winter. Some buyers will just wait until spring to start their search as well. They will just be beginning the process. However, home buyers search and shop for homes in the internet 365 days a year. There may be a slower pace but it certainly does not cease during the holiday & winter months. In addition, the buyers that are out house hunting during the winter timeframes are serious and motivated. The mortgage rates right now are still very low! There is concern that interest rates will not stay this low. This is actually causing an increase in buyer traffic and activity. Further, buyer confidence is starting to shift which is also increasing buyer traffic. If you list now, you will catch this wave of increased buyer showings. When all is said and done, wouldn't you rather have your house sold by March and April and moving on with your life than potentially just listing your house at that point in time? I love it when we accomplish our goals ahead of schedule - it is a great feeling. Lastly, there is always risk that the housing markets could deteriorate instead of picking up. The reality of the market getting that much better in a short period is remote. I doubt that just by waiting until spring, a sales price could be higher by 10 percent. In fact, it could even be a little worse. “Should I list in the winter?” Only if you want or need to sell. Cathy is a resident of East Greenbush and an associate broker with RE/MAX Park Place. She has over 20 years experience in real estate and is a member of NYSAR Professional Standards, Education Management & Housing Opportunities Committees. “I would appreciate the opportunity to earn your business & referrals.” ~ Cathy

Now that December is here, 'tis the season to make great soups & share them! This is a family favorite, I am sure your family will love too. Crockpot Lobster Bisque Ingredients: 2 Clove Garlic, Finely Minced 2 Shallots, Finely Minced (substitute mild onion, if needed) 2 (14.5 Oz.) Cans Petite Diced Tomatoes, With Juice 1 (32 Oz.) Carton Low-Sodium Chicken Broth 1 Tablespoon Old Bay Seasoning 1 Teaspoon Dried Dill 1/4 Cup Fresh Parsley, Chopped 1 Teaspoon Freshly Cracked Black Pepper 1/2 Teaspoon Paprika 4 Lobster Tails 1 Pint Heavy Cream Instructions1.Cook minced shallots and garlic in a small skillet and cook until the shallots are wilted and starting to turn translucent. 2.Put shallots & garlic mixture your crock-pot. 3.Continue adding tomatoes, chicken broth, old bay seasoning, dill, parsley, pepper & paprika. 4.With a sharp knife cut off the fan part of the very end of the lobsters and add those to the crock-pot. 5.Stir, cover and cook on low for 6 hours or 3 hours on high. 6.Remove the lobster tail ends and discard. 7.Using a blender or immersion blender puree the soup mixture to your desired chunkiness. (I pureed half until smooth and the other half just a light puree.) 8.Add the soup back into the crock-pot if you used a regular blender. 9.Add your lobster tails to the soup, cover and cook 45 minutes on low or until the shells turn red and the lobster meat is cooked. 10.Remove lobster tails from the soup and let cool slightly. 11.While the lobster is cooling add the cream and stir. 12.With a sharp knife cut each lobster tail in half long-ways and remove the lobster flesh from the shells. 13.Discard shells and roughly chop lobster meat & add back into the soup. 14.Serve, share & enjoy! Dear Angie,
With the holidays approaching and money tight, how do I get my kids to realize, or to soften the blow, that they are not getting what is trending for their age group! I can not afford these items even with Black Friday prices! What can I say to them that they will understand ??? Sincerely, Cleaned out on Castleton Dear Cleaned out, This is always tough. Explain to your kids that Santa can't get everything on everyone's list. Have them make a list from most to least important. Then do everything in your power to get the most important. You can always ask relatives to get the least important items. If there is no way you can get any of these items then you have to sit your child down and have a real heart to heart. It's going to be tough but better than to be disappointed in Christmas morning.
Have a question for Dear Angie? E-mail it to: felts66@yahoo.com

A Holiday By Any Other Name is a Dinner Party By Daryl Bart
It’s here. The ubiquitous Holiday season. The time we impatiently wait for yet feel like it sneaks up on us; look forward to & dread simultaneously; that we put tons of mental time, money & energy into and it’s gone in an instant. Even the extra early holiday music radio stations doesn’t solve our dilemma for feeling this way. By “We”, of course I mean “Me”, but am I the only one who feels that way? I mean, I love a good party, I love the smell of pine and yes, even snow. I love trying to buy the perfect gift for someone and love it even more when they say “How did you know I wanted this?” But that’s a feeling I like to embrace all year long. I prefer to celebrate & think about folks and act on it when the thought strikes me, rather than wait till the calendar tells me to. I cause enough chaos in my own life on a daily basis, managing the multi-tasking this rollercoaster I call my life. I don’t need any more. The early holiday marketing with the back to school items kinda freaks me out. I feel stress over it and I should feel gratitude. I mean – don’t we want to live a life that is celebratory all the time, rather than waiting till the calendar says so? It is true that I’m one of those folks that tries to both embrace & buck tradition all at the same time. Have my cake & exercise too. Lay in the sun & wear sunscreen. Travel for business and pleasure. And sometimes December 25th is just an inconvenient day to have Christmas. My “holidays are wherever you are” approach was most likely formed a long time ago. As a child, my divorced parents lived 3 hours apart. So to spend a single holiday with both of them, much hustling had to happen. We spent XMAS Eve in NYC with my mom and then hustled to the Catskills before Santa came down the chimney. This complicated transfer was done by any means possible. We kids were transported by family & friends and once even a taxi. There was more than one Xmas eve boarding a northbound Trailways bus, (from Port Authority in the70’s, no less). Anyway, growing up with both Jewish heritage and Christian traditions, we embraced Christmas as a Social Holiday. No midnight mass or meatless meals, but we had feasts and presents and cheer. Fast forward to now. We’ve been married for a while, with kids of our own. While we lived thru the years with negotiations….we had the “I want to go to my family for Thanksgiving, Forever” conversation (he won) and the “I want to go to my family for Christmas Day” discussion (I won)…..we’ve settled into holiday routines that fit our current family tapestry, knowing these too may change one day. I fully understand the religious origins of this season. Although my religious upbringing may have been questionable and non-specific compared to his, our traditions of celebrating families and friends runs very deep. It’s truly a season of renewal and of revisiting and of reflection. We can look to where we’ve come from and at a lifetime of influences & traditions. Yet, we must be willing to refine them to fit today’s landscape. As time passes, families change, grow and pass on requiring that we sometimes must re-write traditions reflecting who we are today. As we close in on 2015, I want to thank you all for reading & for being a part of my current tapestry of all of the things I am thankful for and celebrate. I send peaceful wishes for a successful & healthy new year. Be kind, think globally, act locally and hug your loved ones. And if necessary listen to some Christmas music in the car. Happy Holidays to all, wherever you are and on every day! DCBART1@GMAIL.COM

Does My Pet need Emergency Care NOW? By Rose Broglio, DVM
Not every health problem that affects your pet requires emergency medical attention, and it can be difficult for owners to determine when there is a need for immediate care. Because the holidays are so busy and family routines are different, often our pets are left feeling a bit stressed as well as under exercised, making these weeks of the year a veterinarian’s busiest time for emergencies. Prevention is priceless, here are some tips. Make some time for pets to get extra exercise as a stress reducer during the holidays. Set up a safe, stress-free area where elderly, fragile, or otherwise “at risk” pets can relax during highly charged times. Be vigilant regarding holiday hazards such as candles, potpourri, holly, lilies, poinsettias, ornaments, electrical wires and tree-stand water. Don’t be tempted to share holiday food or drink, instead stick to the special treats and bland choices your pet has successfully eaten before. Definitely be aware of leaving your holiday feast unattended on counters or tables, and keep medication bottles high out of reach and off counters. If a fragile new puppy or kitten will be added to the household, remember to plan ahead for introductions to existing pets and children – safe separation for an extended period of time, except when under close supervision. The majority of holiday mishaps can easily be avoided with attention to detail. Even with preventions in place, some pets do require an emergency trip to the vet. Knowing what IS a medical emergency can save you hundreds of dollars and a lot of worry. You should be heading for the vet quickly in any of the following situations: •Seizure, collapse or trouble breathing •ye injury •Vomiting, diarrhea or loss of appetite that persists more than 1-2 days (touching base with your veterinarian by phone could avoid an emergency visit) •Allergic reactions involving swelling or hives, or any vaccine reaction (here again, sometimes a phone call to your veterinarian is enough) •Prolonged exposure to extreme heat/cold •Any wound that is open and bleeding or any animal bite •Hit by a car or other trauma such as falling from a high place •Inability to urinate or defecate •Pain, with signs such as: labored breathing, lethargy or restlessness incessant crying or abdominal BLOATING •Consumption of possible toxins •Any significant change in an ongoing medical problem or surgical complications •White or pale gums, or a temperature above 102.5 When in doubt always err on the side of caution, it’s better to be conservative. You can expedite your pet’s emergency treatment by bringing medical records, medication bottles, boxes or packaging (when toxins have been ingested), and when feasible call ahead to be sure what form of payment is accepted for emergency room care. TRASH TALK by Vince Coppola
Happy Holidays to Everyone! A special note of thanks and gratitude to all of our new and existing customers! 2014 was a really great year for our company with many new and lasting friendships created…this is why we do what we do and it is our goal on every pick up. I also want to express my appreciation to all the local Our Towne and Your Home Towne publishers, whose tireless dedication to putting out these excellent publications really helps local businesses grow and prosper. Thank-you all! Our company is Scrapster, LLC, the Capital Region’s premier Clean Out, Junk Removal and Scrap Metal/Appliance Removal and Recycling service. We are a local family owned business and cater to both residential and business customers within a 50 mile radius around Albany, NY. We are fully insured, convenient, and reliable and always provide top Quality work. Everything is properly recycled, disposed of or donated. I started in 2010 with one truck (a Ford Ranger… one step above a shopping cart) and my driveway doubling as a storage depot (see Wife = not happy). Today I have several employees, 4 trucks and 10,000 square feet of warehouse recycling operations. This year we passed the 1.5 million pound mark in processed scrap metal and our ever expanding clean out, furniture and junk removal services are really taking off. Look for us to keep growing this year THANKS TO YOU! Scrapster is an official New York State DEC approved location for business or personal computer and electronics recycling. We are fully EPA608 certified for Freon (refrigerant) recovery and removal from refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and coolers. We are doing our part to help protect the environment both now and for the future. A competitor once asked was I “…still going down into basements?” The answer is and always will be: YES! “Don’t Worry, We Can Take It!” isn’t just our company slogan, it is the back bone of what we do. Large or small, easy or difficult…we try to go where others won’t, to take out the things they can’t, anytime we have to, to get the job done right… safely, correctly and on time. Please call us at (518) 505-5055. We’ll remove the items from exactly where they are located-you don’t need to do a thing. Please Like Us on Facebook and visit our website at www.scrapster.com for more information, specials & coupons, recycling information, or to schedule an appointment.
