The Our Towne Spotlight Shines on ...14K Jewelry Store Inc. Michael Ferrari, a Hudson native, established 14K Jewelry Store, Inc. in 1988. Located at 303 Fairview Avenue (Route 9) in Hudson, 14K Jewelers has been providing the area with affordable fine jewelry , giftware and repairs for almost 30 years. 14K, as they are fondly referred to as, is another example of a small, family owned & operated business that has been dedicated to serving the needs of its customers & community. The beautiful store offers one of the largest selections of quality jewelry in 14K yellow, white, or rose gold; as well as a wonderful collection of jewelry in sterling silver, Citizen Watches, Reflection Beads, and Camelot Wedding Bands. The first jeweler in the area to offer laser technology, Michael can repair, size and create custom jewelry without the use of heat. The focused light beam allows him to manipulate even one millimeter-allowing for a beautiful, seamless look with a stronger bond. This technology is much better for jewelry and precious stones since it is less vulnerable to damage in the process. Having mastered the art of laser welding; Michael has done work for other jewelry stores and has been referred by people as far away as California. Once repaired with laser technology, it will look good as new, if not better! Nancy, Michael’s wife, and their three children are also a part of the growing business. Nancy manages the retail & customer service end of the business and their sons love working side by side with their parents whenever possible. Nancy is a true “people person.” Her warm and positive attitude welcomes you immediately. She has a respect and gratitude for the relationships that they have created with customers; absolutely getting so much joy out of providing quality pieces at affordable prices. Today, people buy jewelry online and come to us to get it sized or repaired. Unfortunately, we sometimes have to inform them they may not have gotten what they thought. Many times, if a price seems too good to be true, you may not be getting the quality that you think. If you are not dealing with a person that stands behind the authenticity and quality of the jewelry, you are vulnerable. There is much to be said about a small town jeweler that does all work on premises, stands behind all their jewelry, and guarantees quality at affordable prices. You can be confident that when you shop at 14K you will have a quality piece of jewelry. With Michael’s talent as a bench jeweler and master of laser technology, 14K also specializes in creating custom jewelry. Nancy says that “If you dream it, we can create it!” We love making life’s most special moments a treasured memory! Our qualified staff will work with you until they design the piece you are dreaming of. “We think outside the box to create a piece of jewelry at the lowest possible price.” 14k is also one of the few jewelry stores in the area to have a watch maker on premise. Other services include battery installation, engraving, restringing and eyeglass repair. Gifts for the new baby, weddings, and anniversaries are also available, many which can be engraved. With free gift wrap and a very attentive staff to help you find the perfect gift, for every budget, 14K Jewelers should be a part of your Holiday Season shopping plans. Open 7 days a week during the holiday season, you can find their charming shop just North of the City of Hudson at 303 Fairview Avenue (Across from the Big Lots/Aldi Plaza on Route 9). They can’t wait to meet you and provide you with a quality piece of jewelry for you and your family to cherish for years to come.
As the selection of jewelry has grown over the years, so has the technology for the bench jeweler. Constantly growing, educating, and keeping up with advanced technology, 14K Jewelry Store Inc. continuously strives to meet the growing needs of its customers. Whether it’s a priceless piece of jewelry, or a pair of glasses, 14K can repair it. Known to be the first jewelry store to introduce laser repair technology in the Twin Counties, we do all our repair work on premises. Please visit us at 303 Fairview Ave in Hudson, 518-828-3534

“Nancy & Mike helped me design the perfect ring! I shared tons of ideas with them and Mike was able to create a semi-custom ring at a fraction of the price. He is a genius- but without Nancy's expertise and ideas, we would have never come up with the design that suited my taste & budget. They are fantastic! I will never go anyplace else.” Jenna, Castleton “Thank you 14k Jewelry Store INC. for sizing & cleaning my ring! December 2016
Dear Our Towne Readers, This year flew by for me. I can’t believe that the Holiday Season is already here and 2017 is just around the corner. There is no better time to support local, family owned businesses in your community. I may be repeating myself...Where you choose to spend your money is where you show support. I have heard many community members over the years complain about the lack of businesses in our area. If you want the current businesses to stay alive, you have to support them! If we don’t make an effort to shop with small, family owned businesses they will not survive. Please resist the urge to pick up your holiday items at the big chain stores. Will it cost a little extra to buy your desserts, wine, plants, Christmas trees and other gift items at a small business? Maybe. Maybe not. One thing to remember is that the quality is (often) higher and you get the very warm feeling that comes from supporting a person live their dream. Your money stays in the community; so please invest it in our local economy. The next issue of Our Towne Magazine will be out February 1st. With few advertisers and events in January, I take the month to work behind the scenes expanding Our Towne Magazine. I am thrilled to announce the development of an ONLINE DIRECTORY made up of Our Towne advertisers & organizations. I am often asked to suggest and refer businesses (that may not be in the current issue). This Online Our Towne Directory would allow you to simply look up local businesses that have advertised in the magazine. It would be free to the readers. Don’t forget to LIKE Our Towne Magazine (Rensco) on Facebook to stay connected. Thank you to the businesses that trust me with their hard earned dollars, and to the readers who support them! My goal is to “Connect the Community” through print, online presence and Facebook. I wish you all a Happy, Safe, Peaceful & Healthy Holiday Season.

Boost Your Curb Appeal in Winter By Cathy Graziano
Just because the temperature is freezing doesn't mean you can't warm buyers' hearts with your home's exterior during the winter. Here are a few tips to help make your property inviting. 1. Door Number One Don't miss the opportunity to make a great first impression. New doors are worth the investment. Or, give your door a fresh coat of paint and upgrade your handles and knocker with some shiny bling. When appropriate, brightly colored doors can create a charming focal point, especially during winter when the world can seem white and grey. 2. Plant some green Evergreen shrubs look terrific in pots on the porch and can add allure to your home's entry. 3. Keep it safe Be sure that all walkways are clear of snow and ice. In addition to helping to prevent dangerous slips, the clean lines of a shoveled driveway look great and imply your property is well cared for. 5. Stash Santa Past January 1, be sure to take down distracting holiday decorations. No blinking lights, reindeer on the roof, and no inflatable snow snowglobes. You can, however, dress up your front door with a non-denominational winter wreath.

6. To sit, porch-ance to dream If there's room on your porch, consider adding a rocking chair or bistro set. While prospective buyers probably won't consider whiling away the evening out there in winter, the furniture can remind them how nice it is to sit there in warmer weather. An experienced agent will have other ways to spruce up your unique property, inside and out, during the winter. Find one at RE/MAX Platinum. "I appreciate the opportunity to earn your business and referrals, Call or text me at 518-496-2297 “ Cathy is a resident of East Greenbush and an associate broker with RE/MAX Park Place. This year marks 25 years of experience in the real estate business for Cathy. She is also a member of NYSAR Professional Standards and Education Management Committees.

Ask the Audiologist By Madison Hearing Center
The Gallery at Capital Sawmill Enjoy A Bite & Sip when you shop on Saturdays! Jewelry & Pottery Primitive Decor Handmade Furniture Unique Gifts & Custom Creations by Local Artists
Question:
How does my audiologist decide what hearing aids are appropriate for me?
Answer:
518-479-0729
When deciding on what hearing aids to recommend there are a number of factors for you and your audiologist to consider. First and foremost is By Dr. Dara Kelly deciding if you are a hearing aid candidate. Your audiologist will review your hearing test with you, including the type and degree of hearing loss you have. Then the audiologist will review if you are a hearing aid candidate. If you are, the audiologist will discuss your options for hearing aids. There are many different hearing aid manufacturers, styles of hearing aids and different levels of technology. The audiologist will ask you many questions: about your lifestyle, what situations you have difficulty with, about your dexterity, and your vision. The audiologist also may ask you if you are interested in having hearing aids that connect to your smart phone or have rechargeable batteries. Based on your answers to these questions, your audiologist will recommend a manufacturer, a style, and a level of technology.

Thriving Outside the Big Box:
The Cross Eyed Owl Gift Shop Named Quarterfinalist for Indie Award
PLEASE Support The Cross Eyed Owl Gift Shop of Valatie in National Award by Voting Today! The national small business movement, Independent We Stand, announced the quarter finalists, including The Cross Eyed Owl Gift Shop of Valatie, NY, of the 2016 Independent We Stand Independent Small Business of the Year or Indie Award. This movement encourages holiday shoppers to support these businesses over big boxes and national chains. In the fall of 1993, Patti Varga opened her first shop as a means of selling her own crafts and creations. Over the years, the shop grew and moved to its current larger location, becoming the Cross Eyed Owl Gift Shop that we know today. The shop now features unique quality products from more than 400 companies including Jim Shore, Willow Tree, Heritage Lace, Park Designs, Woodstock Chimes, Naked Bee, Gund, Camille Beckman & Yankee Candle. You will find home décor as well as cards and gifts for men, women and children of all ages. To tempt your taste buds they also carry gourmet goodies from Robert Rothschild Farms, Braswell’s, Jelly Belly Candy & Abdallah chocolates. With their large assortment of gifts and personalized service, you are sure to find that special present, for even the most challenging people on your shopping list. Varga grew up in Columbia County and enjoys working in her home community. She is generous with donations to local groups for their fundraisers and believes in giving back to the community that has supported her business for more than 23 years. Varga says the best part of owning her shop is the interaction and relationships she has with her customers. The Cross Eyed Owl is located at 3143 Route 9 in Valatie. They are open: Monday-Friday from 10:00-6:00, Wednesday from 10:00-8:00, Saturday from 10:00-5:00 and Sunday from noon to 5:00. Extended Holiday hours begin December 12th. For more information, please call 518-758-6755 or visit their website: www.crosseyedowl.com. In addition, you can find them on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. “This year’s quarter finalists represent a variety of independent businesses across the country, who are making an impact on their local economies,” said Bill Brunelle, co-founder of Independent We Stand. “This award is our way of recognizing their outstanding efforts in their respective communities.”

The Friends of the Castleton Public Library (CPL) are a diverse and enthusiastic group with one thing in common: a passion for their cause. The cause is the newly-renovated, five star awardwinning library at 85 South Main Street in Castleton, which serves the village and the Town of Schodack. The Friends are seeking new members to share their goal of supporting and increasing funds for the library’s expanding programs and resources for all ages, including the latest books, DVDs and e-books, public access computers, knowledgeable staff and access to the resources of the entire Upper Hudson Library System (UHLS). The Friends are dedicated to raising funds for the library through creative community outreach projects, such as an annual Halloween Family Fun & Parade, which attracts hundreds of kids and families each year, and The Friends’ “Boscov’s Friends Helping Friends” money-saving shopping passes. The organization’s major annual fundraiser is held at Barnes & Noble bookstore in Colonie Center in November, but online voucher shopping is still going on until Christmas. By using a free voucher at the time of check-out, a portion of every one of your purchases is donated to the library. This year’s raffle baskets include goodies from Honest Weight Food Coop, toys and activities for kids, a $25 gift certificate to Mercato’s Restaurant I and II, and much more. Buell’s Floor Covering: The Smart Choice Chuck & Marcia Buell started Buell's Floor Covering in 1969 at 1103 3rd Street in Rensselaer. This family business has not only survived the increasing presence of big box stores & the Internet, but continues to compete and thrive. Chuck Buell and his family have earned the trust, referrals and praise of home and business owners throughout the capital region. For almost 50 years, they have sold and installed every type of flooring - wood, carpet, cork, laminate, tile, luxury vinyl. It is no surprise that with a commitment to building relationships with their customers, providing competitive pricing and guaranteed satisfaction, the business has grown. Buell's Floor Covering is another example of a small family business. Throughout the years, everyone has contributed to the success & growth. While Marcia raised the 5 children (Steve, John, Bob, Lynda, and Christopher) and managed the financial end of the business, Chuck was out in the community beautifying homes and businesses with new flooring. As the kids grew, they joined Chuck in the field. Chuck refers to his family as a "team," and Marcia was the coach and manager. He credits his wife with the success of the family and business. She was the base of the business & family; and deeply loved and respected by her children & husband of 56 years. Marcia was suddenly taken from the family after a short fight with brain cancer last year. Diagnosed with a very aggressive form of brain cancer, called Glioblastoma, she and the family were devastated by the dreary prognosis. After a surgery to remove a brain tumor, she passed a quick month later. The Buell family felt grateful and blessed that she suffered a short time, but was shocked and heartbroken. Marcia was "a kind & loving person, who was smarter than all of us put together." She left behind a family that is grateful for her guidance, unconditional love, patience and support. Every day without the matriarch of the family has been a struggle; but Mr. Chuck Buell and his grown kids know she was lucky to have not suffered. This family moves forward, continuing to sell, repair, install and clean floors across Our Towne and beyond. Buell's Floor Covering looks forward to meeting you, earning your business and referrals. With a showroom at 470 North Greenbush Road in Rensselaer (just down the street from I-90 Exit 8 & Route 43 intersection.) They have all of your flooring needs- wood, carpet, cork, laminate, tile, luxury vinyl. The showroom has many samples of traditional flooring; and specialty carpet tiles perfect for RV's,boats and areas exposed to moisture. Mr. Buell will even bring samples to you at home and work. When you shop with Buell's Floor Covering, you can feel confident that you will get a great price, excellent customer service and installation from the same business. They use the Green Seal Certified HOST Dry Carpet cleaning system that is safe and effective on your carpets and tile floors. The environmentally responsible cleaning system uses cleaners made from 100% plant based resources. When they leave your carpet is DRY and clean- with no harsh chemical residue. When you buy from a big box store, you may think you are getting a "deal," but you have no idea who is actually going to install and guarantee the product after it is put in. With this small, family business, you know who is standing behind the product & installation. You deal with them from beginning to end. Feeling terrific about supporting a locally owned & operated family business is the bonus. Please shop small and remember to consider Buell's Floor Covering next time you are shopping for a new floor or need a cleaning.

Vacation Days Daryl Bart • www.darylbart.com
Authors note: Trash mouth alert & advanced apology I came to this amazing realization that even though I’m always looking ahead to our next vacation, I don’t have a life I want a vacation from. Truth be told, I live every day in a chaos s&*!tstorm, yet wake up each morning happy to face my massive to-do list, and oh so many unfinished projects.
It sounds as if I’m saying this is bad. It isn’t. It’s life. It’s our exciting, messy, chaotic existence. Can it be confusing? Yes. Is it a balance? Yes. Do I want to give it up? NO WAY GRATITUDE, BABY. I have really, really thought on this. I get a lot of mixed messages. We’re socialized to sit in the bleachers and lament over the kids commitments, but I would rather them be working or playing a sport then binging on those dumb netflix shows (unless it’s Greys or Scandal) Yet the memes on social that claim it’s ok to “Live a life by design”.
My husband and I have a family business that’s growing and changing daily. We love it, for so many reasons, but it is not without some sleepless nights and long days.
That’s what we’ve done. Maybe accidentally, maybe with intention. If you build it, it will come The glass is full. I’m grateful for it.
I have my own virtual business that no matter how I try to set “real business hours”, it never seems to happen. Facebook & Gmail never sleep and neither do my customers who, when ready to jump on the healthier lifestyle bandwagon, are not looking at the clock.
So as we approach the end of this year that flew by WAY too fast, what are you grateful for? What is it about your life that fuels you and makes you happy to get up?
Social, coaching & volunteer commitments round out our weeknights with meetings and practices and we’re thankful for a very, well used crockpot (if you have any good recipes email me).
For me, it’s knowing that whether I’m coaching women to be better than yesterday, or if I’m working with Joe to create the best business we can, or if I am supporting my kids to become the best citizens they can be, I am grateful.
The biggest wildcard these days are the “Terrible Teens” (you thought the 2’s & 3’s were tough). My teens are AWESOME...they are not terrible. In fact, I love them so much I want to type an entire row of emoji hearts right now. However, their schedules fit that bill. Their “uncontrolled” commitments: friends, the immediate need for everything, school project supplies, haircuts and yes, underwear, have a way of making even the most well planned calendar, explode.
Grateful for the chaos
Allison plays 3 sports and loves visiting with her friends. Nathan is worse. He has a part time job, but needs a ride, is learning to drive, but not alone yet, plays 2 sports and as of the day of this writing, is adding winter league because he has the time???? He’s also starting college visits, and college test prep has arrived. And he has a girlfriend.
I realize that I might have to wait for basketball season to be over or go away without the kids (hmmmmm), but either way, my nutty life will be here when I get back, facebook will still be open for business and I will still be filling up my gas tank to drive someone, somewhere.
These kids are busy with a capital B. That means their schedule is also MY schedule.
And no, I don't want it to be all that different, or less. Calgon doesn't need to take me away, but I do want to go on vacation.
So deep breaths. Power up the mac, consult the calendar and just do! As usual, I’m busy today, but Oh! An email just arrived with some discount airfares, so I might need to check that out.

Word of Mouth By Joseph R. L apinski, D.D.S.
www.LapinskiDentaL.com My staff gets flooded with calls at this time of year with questions about dental plans, annual spending reports, HSA’s, FSAs and squeezing in college students on break. We’re happy to help. The fortunate folks that get dental benefits thru an employer, spouse or parents have the opportunity to really maximize them. While usually a fixed amount annually (say $1500), unused benefits do not roll over. If you’re too late for this year, it’s worth thinking about for 2017. One of the hardest things for us is to watch patients with unused dental benefits leave them behind. This might not be relevant for the person who comes twice a year & is in the “no cavity club”. However, if you’re someone that’s been considering repairing, replacing or have a nagging feeling something is going on in your mouth a few things are true. Dentistry doesn’t get cheaper if you wait. The earlier we find it the more time and options you have and knowing the big picture helps. No dental problems ever get better by themselves & often get more painful, more complicated and more expensive to fix. Simple cavities can turn into root canals, chipped and lost fillings into the need for crowns, bridges, extractions and implants. If you don’t need any dental treatment specifically, getting among other things, regular cleanings and check-ups, getting up to date on diagnostic xrays, flouride, sealants, consultations, sports & night guards and long range planning is a great idea. Getting in sooner, rather than later, we can detect early signs of cavities, oral cancer & periodontal disease which are often silent and not painful if there is anything. Let your dental staff help you maximize your benefits, review any outstanding plans and maybe even squeeze you. The dentist just might save you something. As always ask questions, we can’t help you if we don’t know about it. www.LapinskiDental.com DrJoe@LapinskiDental.com

Valatie Santa Claus Club Celebrates 70th Year Each Christmas Eve, Santa himself visits the homes of little children-courtesy of the Santa Claus Club. The club was established in 1946 by 15 area men to provide gifts for the poor. Local clothing mills-an important source of employment-had died out and it was to be a bleak Christmas. To bring some Christmas spirit to the village, the men used money from their Army separation pay, and provided gifts on Christmas Eve for the children. Thus began the first Santa Claus Club in the nation. This is our 70th Year brining cheer to the children in the Valatie area! There will be a Winter Walk December 10th beginning around noon. There will be local businesses that are open for shopping, food and other festivities. There will be a parade where Santa will be on a sleigh and come down Main Street Valatie. There will be raffles and prizes in the Valatie Theatre around 4:30. Bring your families and enjoy picture and coffee and donuts while you get a chance to see Santa. Grieving for Pets During the Holidays
Losing a pet is never easy and the holidays can be particularly difficult. The loss may have come after a long illness or occurred suddenly. Regardless, the pain, sadness and depression are real. Grieving a pet is a real emotion and while it does heal with time, there are things you can do to cope with the loss. Grieving is a personal and individual experience. Some people may go through emotional stages of anger, guilt, depression and acceptance, while others experience their grief in high and low surges. For some, months or years afterwards a special sight, sound or memory can trigger an overwhelming flood of sorrow. Each are different but all are normal. During the grieving process, it is important to recognize that time will ease the pain, but until then, don’t be afraid to reach out to others who understand your loss. Those who empathize know the powerful bonds people and animals can share, and they can be supportive to you. Through the loss, try to maintain a normal routine, visit friends and exercise. Although grieving is normal, do not neglect the emotional and physical needs that friendship and activity provide. When in mourning, it can be easy to avoid others, but isolation may lead to further depression. It may also help to create a special keepsake, like a paw print, decorated photograph or memory book. For children, the loss may be their first experience with death. They may feel a range of emotions from sadness and guilt, to anger and fear that someone else they love will die. Be honest about the pet’s death and do not hide it by saying the pet ran away or “went to sleep,” which could make a child feel more frightened. Assure them that they had no blame in the death and, if possible, involve children in the process. If your pet will be euthanized, be honest about what and why it is happening. Explain that your pet may be suffering or terminally ill. Give the child an opportunity to spend time with the pet to say goodbye and let them see you express your grief. Do not hurry to replace a pet with a new animal. The message you may be teaching is sadness can be erased by buying a new pet. Pets are not temporary or replaceable. Instead, allow your family the time to mourn and wait until you are emotionally ready before bringing a new pet into the family. While pets bring us great joy and happiness, losing one can leave us feeling deep, profound sadness. Coping with the loss is never easy, but it can be bearable if we take care of ourselves, reach out to supportive people and take the time necessary to mourn a beloved family member, our pet. We’re holding our annual remembrance evening at 6 p.m., Sunday, December 4. We invite everyone who has lost a pet to join us for a special evening sharing memories and supporting each other. By Florence Sanford, CVPM
