The Our Towne Spotlight Shines On The... Gold Gold Krest Family Farm has an amazing selection of Christmas trees, kissing balls, wreaths, and firewood. Fresh evergreens await you at this season, along with a sincere appreciation for your business. The staff at Gold Krest Farms have been preparing for the winter season, with plenty of firewood ready to be delivered to keep your home toasty warm. Stop by the farm and customize your kissing ball or wreath. Just pick your decorations and the staff will create your personalized decorations. If you need firewood or a Christmas Tree delivered locally, just ask. It’s free at Gold Krest Family Farm! Eight months out of the year, you can depend on Gold Krest Family Farm to supply you with the freshest goods from the land that they call home. Since 1930, the Webb family has provided customers with local homegrown produce. They strive to offer only the freshest and highest-quality produce and provide all of your Fall & Winter decorating needs. A fourth generation farm in East Greenbush, NY, Gold Krest Farm has 450 acres and is known in the Spring & Summer for its sweet corn, while Autumn brings a selection of thousands of pumpkins for decorating & pie making, huge colorful mums, and corn. Finally, Winter brings fabulous Christmas trees, wreaths, kissing balls, and firewood. Everything at the farmstand is perfectly grown and picked for you, and will make your holiday season merry and bright! Stop by the family farmstand this winter to see for yourself the magic of a local farm. Each time that I speak with Chris Webb, he and his family farm are what Our Towne represents. Dedication to the roots of our community & small business, perseverance through ups and downs, and looking ahead to prosperity and promise of tomorrow. Chris is a humble man, and hard worker with a strong heart. That is the core of Gold Krest Farms and the four generations of farmers that have contributed to Our Towne. The Webb family works long hours, 7 days a week, all year long. You can tell a true farmer by their hands. When Chris and I speak about his farm; you can see the pride & exhaustion on his face. His hands are proof that he farms the land that his father devoted his life to.

Krest family farm

Chris started working with his Dad at only 16, and has never strayed from his career as a farmer. Chris recently said that he is "addicted to farming." Lucky for us! His son Kevin is following in his father’s footsteps. The Gold Krest Family Farm is a true family business, which relies on dedicated and hardworking employees and often extended family members to be successful. From planting the seeds, to picking the product, they bring you products fresh off their land. It is a true farm to table experience. You can eat fresh corn picked that morning or make sauce from fresh grown tomatoes.

You can buy genuine Webb Farm produce and winter decorating needs at Webb's Gold Krest Farm stand on 9J. Their produce is also sold at local retail stores such as Hannaford. Right down from Route 9 near Rensselaer, they are conveniently located and appreciate your business. From Route 9, you can also take Hayes Road down to 9J, take a right and find them a few miles down 9J. Finding produce locally grown for your enjoyment is not far, and you can help our community by supporting the Gold Krest Family Farm. Please stop by the Holiday Open House on December 10th! Photos with Santa are free!

Stop by the farm stand and pick out your fresh evergreen holiday decorations! The Webb family appreciates your business.

MINDFUL EATING DURING THE HOLIDAYS

By Christa Valentine, MS RDN CDN

Even before we saw Halloween come to an end, the shelves were stocked with holiday décor and gift giving ideas. Along with the stress of the holidays, for many of us also comes the stress around food choices. Dated advice, such as “fill up on veggies” and “saving calories” is not effective. Mindful eating (during the holidays and beyond) can lower stress and prevent the swings from overindulgence to restriction. Here are a few tips to get started: Don’t deny yourself your favorites. This practice makes foods more desirable and there is a greater risk to overindulge when you do allow yourself to consume the food. Restricting backfires for most people, and can cause an increase in stress. Honor hunger and maintain your routine. With holiday chaos and overscheduled days, it is harder to practice the ideal of identifying hunger and fullness cues. It becomes very important to nourish yourself throughout the day, rather than waiting until you are ravenously hungry – which can lead to overeating. Practice self-care. Get plenty of sleep and be active in ways you enjoy. Choose practical over perfect. Identify one self-care activity you can enjoy regularly – such as journaling, reading, mediating, or taking a bath. Mindfulness is about being aware of present thoughts or emotions in a non-judgmental way, and it takes practice. Eating mindfully during the holidays can maximize enjoyment and decrease guilt – bringing back the joy into our celebrations.

December 2017 Dear Our Towne Readers, It’s hard to believe that we are almost at the end of 2017. Our family has a lot to be grateful for and we look forward to relaxing over the holidays. It’s been a rough couple of months in our house as our oldest daughter has battled pneumonia, sinus infections and MONO. At least we finished our college tours, and with all of the time at home recuperating she managed to complete all of her college applications. Now we wait for the news and of course wonder what she will decide to do with her future. One thing is for sure; 2018 is going to be a very exciting year in our home. Our younger daughter will dance her way through the holidays with the CK Dance Performance Company. They perform for many local seniors who reside in adult communities & nursing homes. What a treat it is to see her shine with her fellow dancers and bring holiday joy to local senior citizens. It’s one of those things in life when the “giver” of the gift feels just as great as the “receiver.” The next issue of Our Towne Magazine will be February 2018. I don’t publish a January issue so I can spend time with my family over the holidays and get the business organized for the new year. Please follow Our Towne Magazine Rensco on Facebook so you can continue to get news and updates from the Our Towne family of advertisers and community groups. I sincerely ask you to please shop local with small, independent businesses this holiday season. Keep your hard earned dollars in our local communities where they belong and are appreciated. I wish you all a happy and safe holiday season. I am very thankful for all of my advertisers and readers. Talk to you in 2018!

The Valatie Santa Claus Club has begun preparation for Santa's 71st Christmas Eve visit. On Christmas Eve, for the past 70 years, Santa Claus has visited the homes of the village's children courtesy of the Valatie Santa Claus Club. The club's story began just before Christmas in 1945. A group of Valatie men learned of a young girl suffering a terminal illness. These men used their military separation pay to purchase a Santa Claus suit and a gift for her. On Christmas Eve, Santa paid a surprise visit to her home while the others watched from outside. The the men decided that they should do this for all the young children in the village every Christmas Eve. In 1946, 15 Valatie men organized what would be the first Santa Claus Club in the nation. During the Valatie Winter Walk on December 9th, Santa will appear in the parade and later at the Valatie Community Theater. The Valatie Santa Claus Club will provide photos with Santa. Enjoy cider and donuts while when you see Santa.

Honored Veteran & Valatie Winterwalk Grand Marshall: Thank you Guy Gamello By Sally Hogan I recently had a conversation with Guy Gamello, who I consider one of our town's most revered individuals. He’s known to many of us locals as The Mayor of Main Street, Valatie. Since the 1970s, he has worked hard to successfully build and operate his barber shop on Main Street in Valatie, where he continues to work to this day with his daughter Linda. Many of you know him as a master barber, someone who transcends time and restores faith in traditional values that seem forgotten in our modern era. Perhaps you've viewed portraits from the Guy Gamello Collection that are on display at MHG, or during a haircut have had the pleasure to engage in conversation with him on topics such as his time in the military or what it was like for him growing up in our area as a young man. Guy is a well-respected member of our community who's been here long enough to see Valatie change many times over. In the not too distant past, Main Street Valatie was the go-to shopping center for all of Northern Columbia County, with two pharmacies, a grocery store, butcher, two clothing stores, and much more. While discussing the current environment, Guy explained to me how he coined the phase “survivor business” to describe how most businesses on Main Street are able to exist mainly due to relatviely lower rent costs when compared to other locations such as a shopping strip or a mall. Small businesses here, such as his barber shop, remain relevant because they offer services demanded by locals and visitors alike, while offering a genuine, small town nostaglic feel that is largely lost in current times. Guy is an active member of The American Legion and he truly believes people are appreciative of Veterans and those who currently serve. He was drafted and served during the Korean War, following in the footsteps of his three older brothers who served in World War II. His brother Sam Gamello is credited with being the longest standing member of The American Legion and was honored as a Grand Marshall on Veterans Day several years ago. When the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, marked the start of WWII, Valatie had a population of 1200. During that time, our town lost at least 14 young community members who were killed in combat and many gold star moms were regretfully honored for their loss. In the sprirt of Veterans Day, I strongly believe each of us should at least take a short moment from our busy schedules to honor and respect those who have served and sacrificed while protecting our country. Thank you, Guy Gamello, for your service and bravery, and for helping me put things into perspective. And thank you to all Vets, men and women, who have served our great nation. While we so often are preoccupied with distractions in our busy lives, be it family, work, politics, entertainment, etc., we all owe a debt of gratitude to our Veterans for their service protecting us and our way of life. Guy Gamello will be the 2017 Grand Marshall of Valatie WinterWalk! Come on out and enjoy a fun and festive event on Main Street, Valatie at 5pm on Saturday, December 9th.

COHMSA has applied for a grant from America Walks to create the "Main Street Mile" - a 1 mile walking path from Village Hall to riverside nursing home. The project will involve installing signs to indicate distance and markers mark the path. COHMSA also met with 6 local business & and commercial property owners. The beginning of this relationship will help us with our 2nd goal of economic growth. The owners had valuable insight for our group and will continue to shape our agenda as we move forward. Being a broker between local government and local commerce will be a vital role for COHMSA. COHMSA has also encouraged the Village to invest in traffic calming measures. The Village Board has been very responsive and are in talks with NYSDOT to install solar powered "Your speed is" speed signs and at least 2 crosswalks along Main Street. We hope once installed these features will remind motorists to slow down. COHMSA continues to work with NYSDOT to install a nautical flagpole at the crest of Main. After a smashing 2017, we are delighted to planning an exciting, event filled 2018. Stay tuned for more.

By Nassau Veterinary Clinic, PLLC

Each year in December, we invite those who have lost a pet during the year to attend a special event at our veterinary clinic honoring the beloved pets who left our sides far too soon. Our remembrance evening centers around our holiday tree, which is heavy with paper pawprints decorated by these families. Each fragile ornament is embellished in warm remembrance of a much-loved pet. The following passage was written by Peggy Frezon; she and her husband were honoring their dog, Brooks.

Hang a Pawprint Angel Ornament on the Tree Monday, December 16, 2013. The invitation arrived with a little paper ornament with a pawprint and angel wings. There was to be a memorial service at our veterinarian office, for pets who had crossed over the rainbow bridge this year. My husband and I both knew right away that we wanted to attend, and honor the memory of Brooks. First, I decorated the paper pawprint. Then we drove up to Nassau Vet, which was decorated with lovely luminaries up the driveway. There was a packed house in attendance, and many of the vet staff. We hung our ornament on the tree... and looked at the others... Dr. Shane read a beautiful story, Dog Heaven by Cynthia Rylant, and someone else read Cat Heaven. Then names were called, and when our pet's name was called, we were instructed to ring a little bell. After that, people were invited to stand up and share a memory or story of their pet. I simply told about how reluctant I was to adopt an 11-year-old dog, but that the year we had together was wonderful and I didn't regret a thing. Many other people read poems they'd written, most choking back tears as they thought of their pets. Thank you to the staff of Nassau Veterinary Clinic for caring so much about our pets, and each one understanding the depth of emotion we all feel for our furry family members who have crossed over the rainbow bridge. We love you, Brooks. And here's to all the others who have lost a beloved pet this year. — Peggy Frezon, author of books about the human-animal bond including Faithfully Yours, the amazing bond between us and the animals we love (Paraclete Press). www.peggyfrezon.com This year, our remembrance evening will be held on December 3rd at 6 p.m. We invite everyone who has lost a pet to join us.

“Paws to Remember” Losing a furry friend is never easy! Hang a Pawprint Angel Ornament on the Tree The invitation arrives with a little paper ornament with a pawprint and angel wings. Visitors to the event, which is free and open to the public, will be treated to apple cider from a local orchard as well as handmade cookies. Kinderhook Library is located at 18 Hudson Street, Kinderhook. Regarding the exhibit, Judith Warren said: “We want our community to have a chance to meet the artists of these works. I find that people enjoy hearing the story of a work of art directly from the person who made it. A work of the imagination is a work of special beauty. We feel very lucky to exhibit to our friends again this year in our beautiful, well-loved library.”

Friends Donate $10,000 to Library's Capital CampaignKinderhook, NY, October 18, 2017

At a reception on October 18, the Friends of the Kinderhook Memorial Library presented the Library's Board of Trustees with a check for $10,000 as a gift to its Capital Campaign. "The Library is a vital part of our community and has offered ever-expanding services to adults, teens and children," said Friends Chair Marie Orlando. "We want to do our part in supporting the goal of adding more space to our building, and this gift represents the second in a series of contributions to that end." The second phase of construction has begun, which will more than double the current space and will include a 50-person meeting room, a new Teen room, and a new Children's room. The new addition is expected to be completed by the end of 2018. The Friends of the Kinderhook Memorial Library chose to present their gift during the twelfth annual National Friends of Libraries Week, October 15-21, 2017, which was celebrated throughout the country, recognizing the valuable support of Friends groups to their libraries.

SMILE FOR THE CAMERA By Daryl Bart

This past weekend I was looking at the photos we’ve taken over the past year in order to make a holiday card. I realized that it was only 4 years ago, when I was fairly new at writing down my thoughts each month for Our Towne, that I shared some truths and challenged myself to be better, be more. It was around this time of year and similarly looking for a holiday card photo when I realized, wow, I’m not IN any photos with my kids. That article was the first time I articulated how I had been silently feeling about myself and I was determined to turn it around. Partially for them, but really for me. I needed to lift that cloud of self-judgement. I can only be grateful for that realization. The awareness might have happened suddenly but the change in the behavior? Well, that’s taken a lot longer. I’m my own worst enemy and had struggled with my self-image for a lifetime but truly wanted it to be different. Since I label myself an optimist, a full glass kind of problem solver and way more extrovert than introvert, I needed to practice what I so easily preach to others. That advice is to try and discard the “If, When, Then, Someday” plan because that story is a long one, and rarely ends. We hear of too many situations when something happens in an untimely way and we say, if they had only. I didn’t want this to be me. My budding career as a wellness coach was actually born from this realization and desire to be different. It set me on a road of habit changing. I read A LOT. Pondered endless motivational quotes: “Start now” and “This might be your time” and “You deserve it”. One by one, I started identifying the habits, both good and not so good, to figure out how to grow into a person that could change. While I’m most certainly older, and arguably a little wiser, I’m still the chaos mamma with unwashed hair, a long to do list, vacation dreams and some unfinished projects. Let’s just say I have a lot of “unfinisheds” on this long to do list. Over these last 4 years, I’ve learned to love taking fun photos, sometimes to the horror of my teens. Yeah, too bad! I have way too much fun publically chronicling our activities and my transformations, both physical and emotional, sharing the ups and the downs, the side by sides, and the milestones of our lives. Unapologetically. I’d be remiss, however, if I didn’t mention that, although I’ve changed, and now have an arsenal of pictures to choose from, I waver between being both nostalgic for what we’ve done and anticipating what’s ahead. I’m practically giddy. No, that’s not the correct word. buzzing? sparkling? brimming with excitement over what’s ahead. 2018. The year I’ll turn 50. The year we celebrate our 20th anniversary. Wow, that seems like yesterday and forever in a single sentence. We send our 1st off to college, and yes that countdown has already begun as well. I’m particularly surprised by how intense and scary that one feels to me. I wonder everyday if I am engaged enough, present enough, participating in their lives enough, now that this college phase is finally here. And ever since Nate got his first acceptance letter, I can turn my attention to those small moments, the car rides, the meals, the netflix binging and love every second. And just like choosing to live in in upstate NY where winter will certainly come, with grey days and dipping temperatures, before we can appreciate the first sunny spring days, I must embrace the pace of our lives as a given. And instead of focusing on the “busy” as an excuse, use it to fuel the fire. I have a lot to do: Work on a few office projects, lose the holiday fluff, plan something for my 50th, find a family vacation & one for my anniversary too, plan a graduation, move Nathan out and maybe a few other things Don’t worry, I’ll take pictures. But first, I’ll get back to that Christmas card.

5 Tips for Selling a Home in Winter By Cathy Graziano It might seem that everyone is hibernating for the winter, but home shoppers are still out there in the colder months. Here are few tips for making your listing stand out. 1. Stay warm This is not the time to save a few bucks on your heating bill. You want to create a feeling of welcoming warmth and you can't do that with a chilly house. If the home is vacant, keep the heater on a timer so the property is warm during showing times. 2. Lighten up It's even more important to make sure each room is well-lit during the darker winter months. Table and standing lamps are quick fixes for a dim room. 3. Highlight seasonal features Build a fire. Arrange some plush throws and fluffy cushions on the sofas in your finished basement. If your home has features that make it a cozy place to spend the winter, be sure to highlight them.

FOOD ADDICTS IN RECOVERY MEETING: Are you having trouble controlling the way you eat? You are not alone. Today there is a solution. Food Addicts in

4. Show off your landscaping in photos To help prospective buyers look beyond winter's snowy or brown lawn, and envision the property in warmer months, display photos of the house taken when things were green and blooming. Make a few flyers or a photo album and leave them out (and open) where buyers are sure to see them.

FAMILY STORY TIME, E. Greenbush Community Library, 10 Community Way, 11

5. Clear the way to a sale Make sure the driveway, walkways and porch are safe and free from snow and ice. Be sure to shovel your deck and patio so buyers can walk out and imagine enjoying them in warmer times.

Recovery Anonymous (FA). No Dues, No Fees, No Weigh-Ins - Weekly meetings on Saturdays at 9:00 am at the Church of St. Mary Parish Center - Rm 4, 163 Columbia Turnpike, Rensselaer. Contact Ginny 518-465-5469 or www. foodaddicts.org am. Stories, songs, crafts; all ages.

By Joseph R. Lapinski, D.D.S.

This month I thought I’d my staff to share some thoughts with you since you usually only hear from me. Everyday we see patients for checkups, dental work, emergencies and first time visits. These are the folks you’ll meet. My office has 3 departments. Administrative: Cindy, Karen & Paula at the front desk. They manage the day to day business operations like the schedule, insurance, & billing. Dental Assistants: Joyce & Kayla are my chairside assistants working with me in the treatment rooms with every patient. Hygienists: Lisa & Chris, my team of dental professionals who clean your teeth, provide education on various topics and answer your questions. Me: ”What would you like folks to know?” Assistants: “We’ve noticed that almost everyone gets a little nervous in the dental chair. Some more than others. We honestly try to make every patient feel as comfortable and calm as possible, not simply because it’s our job, but we feel the same way when we’re in the chair. PS..Dr. L is really nice!” ME: “You get brownie points” “Hygienists, same question!” “We want patients to know that we work as a team with Dr. Lapinski. We’re trained to help him help you. Please trust that we can start to help you and be more efficient if you tell us about concerns sooner than later. Also, We’re teeth people. We care about your smile & we can totally tell if you only flossed right before your appointment. Not flossing leaves clues. Bottom line. Flossing Matters. So only floss the teeth you want to keep (Me: She really said that !) Finally, let’s go to the Front Desk. Me: “What can you share with folks as we close out the year.” We’re lucky because we get to meet every patient. We especially love seeing all the kids grow up and hearing news about grandkids from our longtime patients. But it’s sometime hard when a patient gets annoyed with us, for missing their own appointment, even when we confirm every appointment in advance, or not knowing who their insurance carrier is, or if their information changed since the last visit. But, we really believe that everything can be solved by communicating. Whether you need a special appointment time or have an insurance issue, our goal is to advocate so that you have a smooth and positive experience. Me: I couldn’t have said it better myself. Now you’ve heard from my office. As always if you have a dental question that needs answering, you now have at least 8 other people to ask other than me. Thank you for letting us care for your teeth this year and we hope to see you in 2018

All About Eyes Ask an Ophthalmologist Q. My eye doctor told me I may have diabetes. Is it possible to know if I have diabetes from an eye exam?

A. Yes, your eyes can be a window into your health. It’s not uncommon that our eye doctors at Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region inform a patient of a health problem before they have any noticeable symptoms. There are many health conditions a dilated eye exam can reveal such as diabetes, hypertension, thyroid conditions, cancer, and multiple sclerosis. During a comprehensive eye exam your eye doctor will typically dilate your pupils in order to check the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels in the back of the eye. This allows the eye doctor to see any changes in eye health. Diabetes Diabetes can damage blood vessels in the retina (diabetic retinopathy). Your eye doctor will check for retinal vascular changes and blood vessel hemorrhages in your eyes during a dilated eye exam.

By: James Tammaro, M.D. Board-Certified Ophthalmologist at Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region

Thyroid During an eye exam, if a patient’s eyes appear as though they are bulging out it could be a sign of an overactive thyroid gland (Graves’ Disease). Cancer Changes in field of vision, improper pupil dilation, and droopy eyelids could indicate a tumor in the brain or neck. Multiple Sclerosis One of the most common early symptoms of multiple sclerosis is sudden vision loss due to inflammation of the optic nerve. An eye exam may save your life. Finding health issues early through an eye exam can make all the difference in the outcome. Be sure to schedule your annual comprehensive eye exam today.

Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region offers comprehensive eye care services. We have locations in Albany, Clifton Park, Schenectady, Schodack, and Troy.

The ANCHOR food pantry and thrift shop is one of the best examples of a community working together to assist local families during times of need. The food pantry provides emergency food to families and individuals. Thanks to the generosity of local farmers, merchants, and the community garden , the ANCHOR has an abundance of fresh produce to give in addition to non-perishable foods. Much of the food the ANCHOR provides is generously donated by the community. In addition to individuals that donate food, the churches, schools, government agencies, and businesses hold food drives throughout the year to help keep the shelves stocked. Perishable foods such as eggs, cheese, and meat are purchased from the Regional Food Pantry. Monetary donations are extremely welcome and used for purchasing these food items. In addition to the food pantry, the ANCHOR thrift shop offers affordable fashions and household itemsto all bargain hunters. Any proceeds are used to support the food pantry. The ANCHOR is proud to welcome Paula Sancomb as its new manager. Paula is supported by volunteers who are the heart and soulof the wonderful work being done. Is there anything available to help me hear on my cell phone while wearing my hearing aids?

A:

1. Hearing aid technology has improved greatly over the years. Manufacturers recognize that even while wearing hearing aids, patients often still have difficulty hearing on the cell phone. Many people are also now eliminating their landline home phones Dr. Meredith Devaney and strictly using their cell phones. In response to this, manufacturers have enabled their hearing aids to stream phone calls wirelessly to their devices through Bluetooth technology. Some manufacturers require that the wearer uses an intermediate device, worn around a patient’s neck to pick up the wireless streaming from the cell phone. However, most newer devices can now stream directly from iPhones to the hearing aids. 2. How exactly does this technology work? Wireless streaming of phone calls work directly with the cell phones Bluetooth technology. Currently, iPhones work seamlessly with the direct audio streaming. Android phones usually require the use of an intermediate device that is worn around the neck. Your Audiologist will first “pair” the cell phone to the hearing devices. Pairing is telling your phone to remember your hearing aids and work with them whenever they are present. After this is complete, your hearing aids are ready to receive phone calls. When you answer the phone call on your cell phone it will stream to your hearing aids and into your ear canals. This means that if you are wearing two hearing aids that you will hear the phone call in both ears clearly. The sound you are hearing is automatically being adjusted for your specific hearing loss through the hearing aids computer chip. 3. Is the wireless streaming only good for phone calls?

No, anything you are listening to on your cell phone will stream directly to your hearing aids, improving your speech understanding. For example, if you are watching a movie on your cell phone or iPad, you can stream the movie directly to your devices and eliminate the use of headphones. If you are Facetiming a loved one you will be able to understand the conversation more easily and reduce your chance of incorrectly hearing. If you play music, it will be delivered with the corrective factor for your hearing loss and in stereo. 4. Can my smartphone be used in any other way with my hearing aids? Yes, hearing aid manufacturers now have apps you can download to your phone to work with the newest generations of hearing aids. These apps allow your phone to act as a remote control for your hearing aids. By opening up the app a patient can adjust the volume of the hearing aids and change hearing aid programs directly from their smartphone. In addition most apps have a “Find My Hearing Aid” feature that can help locate the hearing aids should a patient lose the devices.
