Our Towne’s Mission:

Dear Our Towne Readers, The Holiday Season is officially upon us. There is no better time to support local, family owned businesses in your community. Where you choose to spend your money is where you show support. I have heard many community members over the years complain about the lack of businesses in our area. If you want the current businesses to stay alive, you have to support them! If we don’t make an effort to shop with small, family owned businesses they will not survive. Resist the urge to pick up your holiday items at the big box, corporate owned stores. Will it cost a little extra to buy your desserts, wine, plants, pies, Christmas evergreens and other gift items at a small business? Maybe a little... But, often times they are the same price. The quality is usually better and you get the very warm feeling that comes from supporting a person live their dream. You are investing in the community, and your purchases are greatly appreciated. It brings me so much joy and fulfillment knowing that I can help these businesses be more successful through this publication. If it were not for my advertisers, there wouldn’t be an Our Towne Magazine. As this year comes to a close, I want to thank all of the small businesses in Our Towne who support me by advertising. This publications goal is to “Connect the Community.” The organizations that send me listings for the Community Calendar are also greatly appreciated. It is my priviledge to help strengthen our community with this labor of love and will continue to publish community items free of charge for as long as I can!

December 2019
The next issue will be February 2020. I go to print around the 23rd of each month, and I can honestly say that just doesn’t “work” for me! There is no way I could have a deadline week at Christmas time. My family would divorce me! It all works out- January is a very slow time for advertising, so I take a break, get organized, live in the moment, slow down and enjoy the beauty of the season with my family. I can travel, rest and make plans for the future. I can’t wait for our daughter to come home from college for the holidays! I wish you a very happy & healthy holiday season with lots of laughter and peace. Thank you for reading Our Towne Magazine; and be sure to LIKE Our Towne Magazine Rensco on Facebook to get information & promotions between issues. Jennifer Felts felts66@yahoo.com

Holiday News 2019 from The Anchor The Anchor will be helping over 40 children in our community have a Merry Christmas with toys, games, books, stuffed animals and much more because of the generous support of our neighbors and organizations around Town. We will have a Christmas shop in the ambulance garage where our families can shop for their children and pick out appropriate aged toys for them. A special Thank You to the Castleton Ambulance organization for the use of their facility and all the individuals and organizations in the area for the continued help and support. We proceeded to hand out over 65 turkeys and dinner fixings for Thanksgiving which included a freshly made Girl Scout pie for dessert. The Religious Education class from Sacred Heart aided in sorting and packing the baskets. WE all had fun and the children learned what it was like to give back to the needy in our community. Thank you to all!!! Christmas baskets are being filled for this Holiday and will be given out in time for all to enjoy a nice dinner. We are still in need of canned turkey gravy, stuffing, canned corn, jello and cake mixes with canned frosting. Please drop off any contributions during our operating hours; Monday's 5-7; Tuesday's and Thursday's 9-2 and the first Saturday of every month from 10-1. Thank you for helping us ! We would like to wish all our community a Happy Holiday & joyful New Year! From all of us at The Anchor

Each Christmas Eve, Santa himself visits the homes of little children around Valatie, courtesy of the Santa Claus Club. Soon, Santa’s helpers will be going door to door to gather the names of the children for his Christmas Eve visit. Look for Santa’s mailbox at the Valatie Post Office and send your letters to Santa.. Santa’s parade starts at December 24th at 3:30 p.m. when he begins his journey down the streets in the village to the tune of Here Comes Santa Claus. Afterward, he visits children under 10 in their homes, calling each by name & delivering gifts. The club was established in 1946 by 15 area men to provide gifts for the poor. Local clothing mills-an important source of employment-had died out and it was to be a bleak Christmas. To bring some Christmas spirit to the village, the men used money from their Army separation pay, and provided gifts on Christmas Eve for the children. Thus began the first Santa Claus Club in the nation. The effort was greatly appreciated by local residents, who have supported the Club enthusiastically ever since. The concept has been adopted by other communities throughout the country and international inquiries have also been made.

DO IT?
Later, I ended up in a facebook group with incredible women who were also authors. Women that found the time to indulge in their creativity and fantasies at the same time, while living completely By Daryl Bart normal lives doing workouts, meal prep, PTA, baseball and boy The other day Joe came home and said, “a scouts. They wove fun, fast, entertaining stories about vampires patient was in today and wants me to tell and demons, bad boys and hit men, with strong central female you they love your articles and you should characters who didn’t realize their super power until they needed to save the world. Now that was the kind of book I wanted to write a book.” write. The inner struggle was relatable. The places could be completely invented or reinvented, time and space could be moved “Yeah, Yeah, That’s what they all say.” and reality distorted to fit the happy (ish) endings! Can you see it now? East Greenbush overrun by zombies!! Really. That’s what a lot of people say. They read these monthly musings and in some cases, connect, So I started. I even wrote a few pages while vacationing in a cozy laugh, appreciate the things I’ve shared. I’m truly flattered. I secluded adirondack cabin. But then we had to go home and I shut love compliments. But a book? the laptop and never made it back to that story.
I used to think I’d write the great American novel. I’d finish books that Oprah suggested and be completely moved, and think, “I want to do this!” But never even tried. Those books were too heavy. Too deep and emotional. It was insurmountable to imagine first conceiving a topic and then writing these complex stories endurance and redemption. Then I read Outlander. I became obsessed with historical fiction. Well with Scottish Highlander historical, romance, time travel fiction. I wanted to write like that, but, again, chickened out of the sheer immensity of the work that goes into the research to produce something excellent. Writers write. I was only thinking about it. I took a class. A memoir class where we wrote weekly vignettes of real experiences. Turns out, I had a knack for that. In fact, my very first Our Towne article was a reprint from one of those assignments. I never gave up the idea of writing a book. I even came up with a title. My future unwritten memoir is titled “If You’re reading this - They’re all Dead” (get it?)
I’m observant enough to see that my starts and stops can be attributed to a lot of things, discontent, boredom, maybe an undiagnosed attention condition. Regardless of the source, I recognize that I’m fortunate, so you might ask, why do you struggle so much with this? I boil it down to some version of legacy. Like Alexander Hamilton muses through the eponymous play, what will I be remembered for? I’m not really that concerned with being known, but more with being regarded for doing what I thought would help me be the best me. The same reason I started playing tennis at 51. Make sense? DOING IT. I woke up today and thought. It’s time. This is the year. DO IT. I'm not very good at meditation so I’ve learned to embrace my mantras where I can find them, usually on my coffee mug or a hoodie. Thankfully Nike has tons of swag with my newly minted 2020 mantra. I want to do something I love to getting up for, the way Joe does. I have a lot of little things that I love and it adds up to a very busy calendar and a full life, but it’s not a thing. I want that book, with my name on it. Until then, I’ll settle for some dedicated writing time, and DO IT. I’ll start to weave the stories that have been floating below the surface, in our alternate reality. So if you see me at my computer, know that I’m really writing fiction, the names have all changed, and no matter how much you might recognize the character, they’re all a figment of my imagination (wink). That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Writing a memoir usually means sharing a whole lot of stuff that is only 1/2 yours to tell. Waiting for the title to be true, meant not writing at all, and since I want my cast of characters around for a really long time. Joe suggests I write it, change the names and call it fiction. He says they won’t recognize themselves anyway (He's probably right, He usually PS. If East Greenbush ever gets overrun by zombies, come look for me at Starbucks because I’ve written an excellent escape plan, is. Don’t tell him I said that). just ask my character Dr. Bo Trapinski.
Put Holiday Stress Aside at the Y! The most wonderful time of the year carries an overwhelming amount of responsibility. Between work, family, parties, holiday events, shopping, and gift-wrapping, there’s a lot going on. We may love the season, but for many of us, the stress of keeping up comes to a boil. Here at the Greenbush branch of the Capital District YMCA, we can help you out! Check out these tips to reduce that everpresent holiday stress: 1.Don’t let your exercise routine fall apart! A heart-pumping cardio or strength training session increases endorphins, distracts from daily irritations, and builds self-confidence. If you’re not in the mood to sweat, a yoga class can help you slow down and re-focus. Make use of the free babysitting included in your family membership to grab a quick workout! 2.Can’t get away for gift shopping? Take advantage of our Drop and Shop on Saturday, December 7th from 5 — 8 PM. We’ll have a bounce house, GaGa pit, and pizza! Let the kids have a blast while you dive into your seasonal to-dos. 3.If time away from work isn’t an option while your children are out of school, then we can help! Sign up for our School Break Camp online at www.CDYMCA.org/YMCA-Childcare/Greenbush-Childcare/. We’ll keep the kids safe and entertained while you’re at work. Find support around you and carve out time for yourself throughout the holiday rush. With the YMCA at your side, you’re free to focus on the joy of the season! Ask the Audiologist By Madison Hearing Center
Question:
Why is it that the person who has the hearing loss is usually the last to know?
Answer:
The ability to hear clearly frequently slips away Dr. Chris Raffo, AuD slowly, and in response, we just turn up the volume. Did you know that a mild hearing loss doubles your chance of dementia, and that as the hearing loss gets worse that number goes up? Your ears are the gateway to the brain for so much daily information and communication. At Madison and Saratoga Hearing Center, our doctors are top level professional audiologists, providing diagnostic hearing evaluations and a wide array of treatment options, including the fitting of customized protective hearing devices and hearing aids, using the most advanced technology available. We can match the right instrumentation to your hearing needs and your budget. Hearing healthcare should focus on preventing hearing loss as well as treating it. Diagnostic testing is covered by most insurances (co-pay may apply) and having a baseline hearing test at age 55 is a great way to determine if any preventative measures are warranted.

By Lapinski Dental
I walked into a treatment room the other day and a patient said “Here comes the best dentist in the Capital District.” I followed his compliment with an equally complimentary response on his intelligence and good looks and told him he was my favorite too! It was light hearted, a little mutual admiration society moment. We laughed, shook hands and got down to the business at hand. I have to say that it is humbling to have even one person think that I’m the best at what I do. I work hard, focus, and act in a way that is both practical yet uncompromising. So, I’m less than humble when I say with confidence that I’ve built this local small business as one we can be proud of and that takes teamwork. The effort starts with Front Desk Assistants, answering questions and designing a schedule that helps us run on time and accommodate everyone that wants to be accommodated, to the Hygienists who care and nurture and educate in a way that is not threatening or scary but compassionate and competent, to the Doctors and Assistants that navigate the complexity of dental care, yet make it look easy (which it is not). Dr. Barile and I didn’t finish dental school and say, we’re done, we know it all. We continue to learn and study and hone our skills, try out new materials and master new technology, all with the intention of being better than yesterday. We take more than double, sometimes triple the amount of continuing education hours required by NYS each year. We evaluate our equipment regularly, replace outdated items and assess our vendors for both lab work and materials so that we can confidently stand behind the services we provide. Dentistry can scary. There are sometimes complex options, costly replacement plans, unfortunate accidents. We try to take the fear out of what we do by simply delivering the service as we would want it delivered to us. To you we are wearing scrubs, gloves and a mask, to others we are superheros, saving teeth to last a lifetime, catching problems before they become unsolvable and giving them back their smiles. To others, it’s just another day at the office with a joke and a handshake. Either way, we’re here, hoping to help you smile today and every day. And if all you want for Christmas is your two front teeth, well, you’ve come to the right place, we can do that! Until we meet in 2020, wishing you, and your family a happy, healthy holiday season.
