New Year, New Chapter? The Spinney at Pond View
Are you 55 or older and starting to question how many more driveways you want to shovel, leaves you want to rake or home projects you want to tackle? Maybe you don’t want to live in an apartment building where you have no privacy? Well, you are not alone. The Spinney at Pond View was created with the idea that active, older adults want to continue to live independently, but on a smaller scale. Their motto is “Home to a New Generation,” and they have nailed it! The builders took the best features of apartments, condominiums and homes and merged them to meet the needs of the “55 and better” population. At The Spinney, you can "live life and have the comforts of home without the woes of home ownership." This concept of creating a single family traditional home model, with the front porch and private back deck space has found success here in Castleton. Without the obligations & responsibilities that come with home ownership, residents feel free to enjoy life. When Phase 2 of The Spinney at Pond View is finished this summer, there will be 186 cottages featuring 6 layout options in a beautiful park-like setting. The Spinney at Pond View is a Private Age-Qualified Community, consisting of cottages that provide many more amenities than your average apartment. Seventy new cottages are being constructed, and will be available for occupancy by early summer 2017. The second phase now features a brand new unit type; a one-story 2 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom cottage with an attached garage (along with all of the other amenities highlighted in a Spinney cottage). The six layouts range from 1,200 sq. feet -1,530 sq. feet. With so many options, you can find one that suits your space & budget needs. The garden-style Craftsman Cottages with cathedral ceilings are even pet friendly!
Cottage kitchens & living rooms offer plenty of space. Just bring your stuff and make yourself at home.
If you like the idea of congregating with peers & enjoying social activities, The Spinney at Pond View’s brand new 5,000 square foot Clubhouse will entice you. The new Clubhouse space enhances residents’ living experiences by providing them with a space to congregate with one another and further connect them with their community. “The excitement behind The Spinney at Pond View’s Clubhouse dovetails from the overarching sense of community that has been fostered by our residents,” said Samantha Raynor, Director of Leasing & Marketing of The Spinney Group, a family owned and operated property management company which manages The Spinney at Pond View. “This space has been filled every day since the building’s certificate of occupancy was achieved with residents who wish to connect with new and old neighbors and friends through Spinney sponsored and self-organized events. It has truly become the center of The Spinney’s operations and we are all so excited to see more relationships being cultivated and events taking place in the near future!” This beautiful, brand new multi-use space features a Great Room with a full-sized kitchen and fireplace, a Media Room with a projector and billiards table, a commercial sized washer dryer, a full service gym, and a spacious outdoor patio which will host summer gatherings and concerts. Numerous activities are already taking place in the Clubhouse such as Zumba Gold classes, yoga, neighborhood potlucks, knitting club meetings, game nights, paint and sip get togethers and so much more! This spring construction will begin on a large pool for resident’s use, as well as a Community Garden. If this idea excites you, call The Spinney at Pond View to schedule a tour and find out how your life can pleasantly change for the better in 2017! The Spinney at Pond View is conveniently located off of I-90, Exit 10. Take Miller Road to Pond View. Call 518479-0800 or visit our website visit www.TheSpinneyatPondView. com. and find out why the Spinney has become Home to a New Generation, right here in Our Towne!
The new 5,000 sq. ft. Clubhouse has a huge kitchen, fireplace in the living room, billard tables, large movie screen and more. A large POOL is coming soon! Residents enjoy lovely features such as attached, direct access garages, private front and back porches, modern finishes including granite counter tops, and spacious open one-story layouts coupled with the conveniences of 24-hour emergency maintenance, snow removal and outdoor landscaping. Time Warner Cable & Internet, water, sewer and trash removal are also included. There are no association fees, as this is a rental property. Each unit is even equipped with a washer & dryer and dish washer. All of your property maintenance and landscaping needs are taken care of. If privacy is a concern, know that you just pull into your private garage space and enter into your home. The residents have the benefit of living in a community that allows them to live an independent life around their peers, without the pressure of being social.
Our Clubhouse living room area is enjoyed by our residents and their familiy & friends. Relax with a book near the fire and enjoy life at The Spinney!

Cathy Graziano Opens Re/Max Platinum Office in North Greenbush Cathy Graziano is a real estate veteran with more than 26 years in the industry, including the last four with Re/Max. With almost 30 years’ experience in real estate, Cathy has been involved in millions of dollars of home sales and purchases since being awarded 1990 Rookie of the Year for her office. Cathy has lived in the Capital District all her life, and in East Greenbush for over 30 years. You may recognize her name, as she has been contributing informative articles for Our Towne Magazine for years. This year, Cathy has opened her very own RE/Max office in North Greenbush. The new Re/Max Platinum office, run by broker and owner Catherine Graziano, is located at 52 North Greenbush Road, Suite E, and will serve the entire Capital Region market, including Rensselaer, Columbia, Saratoga, Schenectady and Albany counties. The office is one of several Re/Max has opened in the Capital Region and across New York state over the past few months. It is the first Re/Max office for Rensselaer County. Cathy has worked with numerous nationally recognized relocation companies, giving her experience relocating families across the county or across town. Cathy managed a local real estate office where she hired and trained some agents who are now quite successful in the field. She is a proud member of the Greater Capital Region Association of Realtors, New York State (NYSAR) & National Association (NAR) of Realtors. She is a Graduate of the Realtor Institute (GRI) & was president of the NYS GRI Chapter in 2001. Cathy currently serves on NYSAR’s Professional Standards Committee & Education Management Committee. Cathy is involved in the community as well. She served as a member & past president of the East Greenbush Central School District Board of Education. She is current president of the East Greenbush Education Foundation which awards Grants to college bound students & funds for student participation in summer enrichment programs in K-12. RE/MAX Platinum participates in the Miracle Home program and believes in the amazing things that happen at our local Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center. We want to help our local hospitals continue to make miracles for kids in the community. Many of our properties are labeled as a “Miracle Home.” When a home is listed as a Miracle Home, it signifies that RE/MAX Platinum will make a donation to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals after that property sells! Cathy says that “The entrepreneurial aspect of Re/Max is what attracted me to the brand, as well as the opportunity to build my own business and make it possible for my agents to be successful.” “As part of the No. 1 brand in real estate, we provide our team of professionals with the most tools and latest technology and the largest network in the business. This is the right formula for success for individuals or a team.” Cathy expects to her office to have 20 or more sales associates within the next year. As a longtime local resident, Graziano said she understands North Greenbush and the rest of the Capital Region market. “Re/Max is growing in New York state, and Rensselaer County is an ideal [location] for business activity,” Graziano said. “The North Greenbush and surrounding areas offer the look and feel of the country and the convenience of being near major economic centers, and it’s just five minutes from downtown Albany. North Greenbush is a vibrant community where we see great potential. “There is substantial economic activity in the region with the presence of companies such as Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy and Global Foundries in [Saratoga County]. We are also seeing extensive construction taking place, and there are a number of proposed developments.” Your home may be your biggest personal investment. One of the most important decisions you will make when buying or selling your home is who you will trust to assist and advise you. Cathy Graziano will help you understand the process, navigate the details and keep you on track in today’s complex real estate market. Dear Our Towne Readers,
wner
As a parent of teenagers, drug and alcohol use is one of my top worries. I worry about it every day. I worry about my kids and every kid I know. The drug issue, in particular, that our society is facing scares me to death. Hearing that straight A students- “good kids”- are using hard drugs and dying young is unacceptable.
felts66@yahoo.com 518-380-1279
www.ourtownerensco.com
www.facebook.comOurTowneMagazineRensco
In recent months, I have participated in a Drug & Alcohol Task Force group at Schodack Central School District. Parents, teachers, staff and local Schodack Police are sharing information about what is happening in our community. We are planning specific interventions and creating opportunities for discussion and prevention, as a reaction to the increase of drug and alcohol use reported across the country.
Our Towne’s Mission: To connect local businesses and organizations to the consumers that live in their communities. We highlight what Southern Rensselaer & Northern Columbia Counties have to offer. Our Towne Magazine content can be read in print, online & via Facebook. 20% of the magazine is donated to the communities served for promotion of events. Our goal is to “Connect the Community” and support small businesses.
It would be negligent and irresponsible to think that our local teensall across Our Towne communities- are not using drugs and alcohol. According to the NYS Talk To Prevent Website, we CAN make a difference. It starts with basic, clear communication at HOME. It starts early and doesn’t stop. The following are tips I found on the website https://talk2prevent.ny.gov/: Research shows that teens whose parents communicate to them that underage drinking is completely unacceptable are more than 80% less likely to drink than teens whose parents give them other messages about underage drinking.
Distribution 21,000
Talking and sharing your thoughts about alcohol with your kids is essential and it’s important to hear their point of view and their perspective. Give your child the opportunity to ask you questions, and listen to what they have to say. Children who have parents who listen to their feelings and concerns are more likely to say “no” to alcohol. Ask them what their peers are doing. Ask them what they hear and see, and how they feel about it. Know who you kids are hanging out with and know where they are.
Our Towne Magazine “connects the community” by directly mailing 19,300 copies to homes and businesses in the following communities:
Children whose parents talk regularly about the dangers of underage drinking were 42% less likely to drink alcohol. How often are you communicating with your child? They key is to Talk Early, Talk Often and Don’t Ever Stop Talking.
Rensselaer, Schodack, Schodack Landing, Castleton, Nassau, East Greenbush, North Greenbush, Averill Park, Wynantskill, West Sand Lake, Valatie, Kinderhook & Niverville.
Develop an open, honest and trusting communication path between you and your child. This is essential to helping them avoid alcohol and drug use. Encourage conversation. Don’t lecture. As parents we want to have “all the answers” sometimes we are so anxious to share our wisdom or our opinion that we don’t take the time to listen. Listen without interruption- your active listening will start a trend for conversations about topics that concern you. Ask open-ended questions - avoid questions that have a simple “yes” or “no” answers.
Plus another 1,700 copies in High Traffic Locations! All Rights Reserved. Our Towne Magazine is published by Our Towne Marketing & Consulting, LLC. Printed Monthly and Distributed Free of Charge.

The Schodack Police have a local tip line set up where you can anonymously report underage drinking (parties) and or specific drug related concerns. The number is 518-477-2426. Keeping our kids (and adults) safe is a community issue; and it starts in the home. But, you don’t have to do it alone with the many resources available in the community. I hope to share more community resource information on this topic over the coming year. I share some words to parent by (found on the internet- anonymous) to the right of this editorial. Feel free to cut out and post on fridge. Thank you for reading Our Towne Magazine. We are now mailing to another 1,200 homes this year, bringing the distribution to 21,000 in Northern Columbia and Southern Rensselaer Counties. Please LIKE Our Towne Magazine (Rensco) on Facebook to receive community news, sale alerts & information from our advertisers. If you are a small business, I invite you to join the Our Towne family of businesses that supports the mission of “connecting the community.”

As long as I live, I am your parent first. Your friend second. I will stalk you , flip out on you, lecture you, drive you insane, be your worst nightmare and hunt you down like a bloodhound when needed because I LOVE YOU. When you understand that, I will know you are a responsible adult. You will NEVER find someone who loves, prays, cares and worries about you more than I do! If you don’t hate me once in your life, I am not doing my job properly.

Building a Stronger Community — Together By Shannon Romanowski, District Executive Director At the Capital District YMCA, the start of a new year is also a time of reflection, as we think about our past and the moments, events and happenings that helped us strengthen community during 2016. From celebrating outstanding students and educators at our annual Rensselaer County Student & Educator Awards Breakfast to honoring our veterans and the heroes who fought so bravely for our freedom during our Veterans Day celebrations, we celebrate community at the Y.
make it even stronger.
Through collaborations and partnerships with community organizations like Rotary, Kiwanis, the East Greenbush Library, area schools, STRIDE Adaptive Sports, and area shelters, the Y celebrates our rich community, and works diligently each day to
Our new partners at Regeneron are helping us share the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in our community. And our long-time partners at CAP COM Federal Credit Union have been instrumental in supporting our Running Start program, which helps us provide school supplies to children in need. There is no doubt that these efforts help children to begin the new school year with greater confidence and self-esteem. And we’re also busy building confidence and self-esteem through our Youth & Government program and our Black & Latino Achievers program. Both programs give our young adults the opportunity to partner with caring mentors from our community; mentors who understand the importance that caring adults can have in the life of a child. And as our Youth & Government students learn how to create positive change through working with government, and as our Black & Latino Achiever students learn about career readiness and important life skills — they’re also learning the value of working together to help us all grow stronger.

Wildcat Pride— a great school—great kids—a great community. We express our pride by giving of our time and money in supporting our school through organizations like the Sports Booster Club, the Music Parents, and the Kiwanis. At Columbia High School in East Greenbush, NY: Sweet Charity presented by Columbia Players. March 3rd and 4th at 7PM. Tickets available at the door: Students & Seniors are $12 and $15 for Adults. THE GLENDORA VEGETARIAN CLUB IS SEEKING NEW MEMBERS Vegan is the way, folks. If you are vegan, you do not have to worry about cholesterol, heart attacks, high blood pressure, diabetes. Ask Dr. Colin Campbell. Over 30 years ago, Compassion Over Killing was initiated by a Washington, D.C., high school student as an after school activity. This activist, along with Mercy for Animals, Farm Animals' Rights Movement, Vegan Outreach, Friends of Animals, et. al, have long informed us about the cruelty of dairy farmers. They are too gruesome to write about here. A trade group representing 7,096 people of the dairy industry, including National Milk Producers Federation, Dairy Farmers of America and Land O' Lakes, created what is euphemistically called a "Dairy Herd Retirement Program." This program involved buying out individual, often small dairy farmers and instructing them to send their entire herds of milk-producing cows to early slaughter in a concerted effort to reduce the nation's milk supply, thus artificially - and illegally - inflating the price of dairy products. In all, this dairy industry program was responsible for killing 500,000 young cows and cheating millions of consumers, all to line the pockets of agribusiness giants. They are paying for it now because of a class action lawsuit. (TryVeg.com) The Glendora Vegetarian Club meets the last Wednesday of the month, February 22nd, at 6 p.m. at Schodack Diner, located at Federal Routes 9 & 20. Call 518-610-5810 for more information. We are starting our 5th year!
Glendora’s Jokes To Brighten Your Day... A man said that when the doctor operated on him the doctor left a sponge inside of him. His friends said, "That must be uncomfortable." The man said, "No, it just makes me thirsty." A stockbroker hung mistletoe over his door so that his clients could kiss their money good-bye. A man bought a car. He said, "I don't know how old it is, but the odometer is in Roman numerals!" A couple had a car that broke down so often they bought themselves the perfect 2nd car - a tow truck!
Did you thank Mrs. Baxter for the lovely party she gave the children? We'll, I was standing in line; I was going to thank her, but the girl in front of me thanked her, and Mrs. Baxter said, "Don't mention it." So I didn't. 13 Our Towne Rensselaer County ~ Jennifer Felts~518-380-1279

ALL ABOUT EYES: Ask an Ophthalmologist By Allen W. Zieker, M.D. & Asher Weiner, M.D.
Q. I need to have cataract surgery. I’m far-sighted and currently wear glasses. Is it possible to have my vision corrected during cataract surgery so that I no longer have to wear glasses? A. The recent FDA approval of the TECNIS® Symfony Intraocular Lens (IOL) is great news for people with cataracts, as well as far-sighted vision. According to the manufacturer, the Symfony lens is the first extended range of vision IOL to correct presbyopia and improve vision in people with cataracts. The Symfony IOL is designed to correct far, intermediate, and near vision, decreasing the need for glasses or contact lens for the majority of patients. The Symfony lens is implanted into the eye during a normal cataract operation. In most cases recovery time is minimal, with patients able to return to their usual routine just 24 hours after surgery. Unlike traditional multifocal lenses, there is a low incidence of glare or halos with the Symfony lens. I was one of the first cataract surgeons in the United States to implant the new Symfony IOL. Both my patients and I are very happy with the results. I would highly recommend that you have a cataract consultation with a surgeon who is experienced at implanting all types of IOLs. Q. I have glaucoma. At my last eye exam appointment, my eye doctor told me I have cataracts. How does having cataracts affect my glaucoma treatment? A. Glaucoma is a progressive disease that damages the optic nerve due to pressure inside the eye that is too high for that eye. Left untreated, glaucoma deteriorates vision and can lead to blindness.

The standard therapies are eye drops, laser treatment, and surgery to either reduce fluid production or increase outflow. If you’re taking eye drops, you could continue this treatment if it’s found sufficient to control your glaucoma. However, new alternatives, now being offered at Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region, are the iStent®—a tiny titanium device implanted during cataract surgery that acts like a miniature drainage system to drain the fluid, and Trabectome®— a device that removes a barrier to the drainage of fluid from the eye. The iStent® and Trabectome® offer significant potential benefits for people with mild to moderate glaucoma. In a recent clinical study, 72% of patients who received the iStent® remained medication free after 12 months. The iStent® and Trabectome® are minimally invasive, avoiding the risks associated with traditional major glaucoma surgery, and they add only a few minutes to cataract surgery. I also use special intraocular lenses (IOLs) that work well for glaucoma patients. If you have glaucoma and cataracts, it’s important to see a glaucoma specialist, who is experienced in treating glaucoma and cataracts with advanced technology. About Dr. Allen W. Zieker Dr. Allen Zieker is President and Director of Cataract Surgery at Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region and Medical Director of the Albany Regional Eye Surgery Center and has been since its inception in 2001. He is a board-certified ophthalmologist with more than 33 years of experience. Working with cataract patients is his passion performing over 1,500 cataract procedures every year. About Dr. Asher Weiner With more than 27 years working as an ophthalmologist and glaucoma specialist, Dr. Weiner brings experience, dedication, and personal attention to every patient he treats. He believes in using the most advanced technologies and treatment protocols to help in achieving the best possible outcomes. ABOUT OPHTHALMIC CONSULTANTS OF THE CAPITAL REGION Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region offers a comprehensive model of care with experienced specialists, ophthalmologists, optometrists, and opticians who provide patient-centered eye care to the Albany, Clifton Park, Schenectady, Schodack, and Troy communities. Ask the Audiologist By Madison Hearing Center
Question: Why are Hearing aids worth the cost?
Answer:
Sally* is 75 years old and enjoys a retired life. She is still living in her own home, has crafts once a week, meets with her book club, and has lunch at various restaurants around town. Lately, she has been coming home exhausted. She decided that her schedule is too busy for her and starts to pull herself from social situations. When her family gathers at her house, she feels the same fatigue. She decided hosting is too much for her, and would rather go to a friend or family member’s house, if there are a small Jessica Potter, AuD, number of people. Audiologist She begins to worry that her health is declining due to the fatigue. Her primary care physician recommends a hearing evaluation. Once she visits her audiologist, she is diagnosed with a hearing loss in both ears. She is surprised when her audiologist explains the reason she is exhausted after social situations is due to auditory fatigue. The amount of effort she needs to successfully hold a conversation is double that of a normal hearing person. With Sally’s hearing loss, the best course of treatment is a pair of hearing aids. Her audiologist discusses various styles and technology levels digital hearing aids are available. Digital hearing aid technology as advance tremendously, they are now small devices that are able to mimic the ability of the brain. They are able to decipher what is important speech vs. various background sounds. Hearing aids cannot not delete background noise, but can allow the hearing aid user the ability to carry a conversation in a complex environment. Sally would be able to attend crafts and enjoy multiple people talking with her. Attend a book club meeting and hear people from a distance as well as up close. Enter any kind of restaurant setting and be able to enjoy the company at the table and, most importantly, enjoy hosting her family gatherings again. While hearing aids seem like a luxury item, the technology offers a solution for the brain to work efficiently, and effectively. Hearing aids provide a chance to keep up an active, positive quality of life. An audiologist will be able to recommend what is best for each patient’s needs, and budget. Sally decided that when broken down, the cost of wearing her hearing aids was worth it. It was worth it to be able to live a full and happy life, to hear her friends and family, to be an integral part of conversation, and to have the safety benefits of hearing in her environments. *Patient named was changed to protect her privacy

Sometimes 'DIY' is not the best option! ByTom Kubiak Many people enjoy taking on the challenge of 'Do It Yourself' projects. Large companies (like Home Depot and Lowe's) cater to DIYers, and entire TV networks revolve around shows devoted to the passion. Although there is a definite benefit to doing many tasks yourself, there are some things that should be left to professionals, and we feel tax preparation should be in that category. Not everyone has a complicated tax return, and honestly many of these returns could be prepared with an 'off the shelf' software package or web service. But the problems with that option become very evident when facing life changes, difficult financial decisions or worst of all – contact by the IRS or New York State. Who can you call when you need help making a financial decision or in dealing with a letter from the IRS? Additionally, it is well publicized that the popular tax software packages can easily result in tax returns that are far from accurate. Even very educated people often make mistakes on their returns. For instance Timothy Geithner, a previous Secretary of the Treasury (and technically the CEO of the IRS) prepared his return incorrectly when using Turbo Tax and only realized it when he was audited several years later. That mistake cost him almost $ 45,000 in back taxes, interest and penalties. So if even the Secretary of the Treasury prepared his return wrong using a tax software – is it worth taking the risk yourself? Rather than spending the time trying to wade through the tax laws yourself – give Owlview Accounting a call. While we are baking you a fresh cookie - our team of tax specialists will be glad to help you wade through the complex tax laws and take advantage of every benefit you should receive. Feel free to bring a copy of your return from last year and let us look it over – we may find changes that can be made to save you money. Our prices are often not much more than you would pay to use tax software. Additionally, we are proud to say that our advise is free all year for our clients – we are happy to help with any decisions you are facing such as starting a business, retirement accounts and even personal finance. Feel free to call our office at 518-732-4010 and schedule an appointment at your convenience, or just stop into our new office at the corner of 9 & 20 – we would be happy to give you a tour of our 'DIY' renovated property!

Old Daley on Crooked Lake 2339 Rt. 43 Averill Park, NY. 12018 Thank you for listening By Daryl Bart I did something I found very hard for me. I hope you can relate. I said no and mom’s tend to have a hard time doing this. More than that. I made a very hard and tough decision. 16 years ago I left my event planning job at NYS to join my husband at his dental office. It was part of our big "plan". With no dental experience and only a desire to help our family business thrive, I embraced it. I don’t like to say it out loud a lot, because it sound ungrateful, or negative, but it wasn’t a dream job for me. I did my best, and I still do. I sought outside activities. I took the kids to mommy & me classes. I volunteered for causes that spoke to me and donated blood. I dabbled in writing the great American novel. I indulged in hobbies like fitness, cooking, travel and manicures. That love of fitness and need for socializing and childcare brought me to the YMCA and it became our second home. My kids went to daycare there, and then over the years, swim lessons and summer camp. I took all the exercise classes. I hired a personal trainer. We went to the community events and I learned to run 5K races. I chance meeting with the then Executive Director led to me coming back with my resume and lobbying to be invited on the Advisory Council. It felt right. I learned more about the Y in that first year then I ever had as a member. I saw their footprint in our community and their effort to reach out to as many people as possible. As an organization they focus on goals: giving kids the tools to succeed, in the pool, on the court and in life. Young and old have a place and a purpose. They rely on us as ambassadors for the programs and the mission, and I embraced it. I raised thousands of dollars that stay right here in our community, supporting the scholarship program, I chaired events and became an advocate myself. I was honored with a term as Chair, testing my confidence and leadership. Being connected to the Y is woven into the fabric of my identity.
Fast forward. Our dental office grew like crazy. During this same time, I found a side hustle. My business as a wellness coach and advocate grew and thrived and became my primary focus. I joined another community non profit board in our school district. I was an accidental sports parent of 2 kids that never stopped and we were in the starting gate for college planning. Commitments are changing. My book is on hold. I stopped running 5ks. Scaled back at the office. I needed to assess once again. I couldn't make every Y meeting anymore. I missed more than one special community recognition event. I wasn’t using my membership, because I did all my workouts at home, for the sake of time, and for my wellness business. I wasn't the Advisor I wanted to be or that the Y deserved from me. I realized that my love and respect for the Y hadn't changed, but I had. Last week, with a racing heart and sweaty palms, I called Shannon, the current Executive Director before the meeting and asked her to end my tenure early. She was incredibly gracious, complementary and understanding. Exactly what this gal needed. To me, nothing is harder than feeling like I’m disappointing someone, and it’s even harder to say goodbye to something you love. But I did it. Then exhaled. Today, I'm still sad. I have been every day since that call and probably will be everyday for a while. Being part of the Y has been my constant and while saying no to them was the hardest, it was a huge yes for me and moving forward. Thank you Greenbush YMCA for helping me develop my passion for wellness, support and social responsibility. In a full circle moment, Nate was just hired as a lifeguard. I guess I passed on some of the Y to my most important project, and for that I am incredibly proud knowing it was worth it.
PS: The Greenbush Y is always looking for community members to volunteer and participate in the amazing programs. Non profits like the Y rely on the support of businesses and individuals to keep doing their amazing work. Contact the Executive Director, Shannon Romanowski at 477-2570 for more information on the opportunities that might be right for you.

Mouth
By Joseph R. Lapinski, D.D.S.
Dear Dr. Lapinski My teeth are sensitive to cold. It is especially noticeable when I breathe in cold air, when I am outside, this time of year. Any thoughts? Sensitivity, especially cold sensitivity, can have a number of causes. Sensitivity is generally due to exposure of the microscopic tubules along the root of the tooth. The tubules communicate with the nerve (also called the pulp) in the center of the tooth. If a tooth is fractured, these tubules can be exposed, causing sensitivity. Think a mini air vent. Also, if the gum tissue of the tooth has receeded, then the root is exposed. The root actually has many more tubules than the crown and enamel portion of the tooth. Makes sense, right? Microfractures: time and use, pressure and injury - all factors that can lead to microscopic fractures in the tooths surface. In most cases you will not even notice and live a lifetime with these itty bitty cracks, but it does increase the risk of exposing more tubules. In the cases of recession or micro fractures, cold sensitivity is way more common than heat sensitivity. Note: Anything that changes abruptly can be a sign of a bigger problem that should be evaluated by dental professional. If you have seen your dentist, and it has been determined to be the common cause, root exposure, keep these points in mind: Use toothpaste designed for tooth sensitivity. These pastes work by clogging the exposed tubules and thus decreasing sensitivity. These pastes usually takes several weeks to work. Brush with softer strokes using a soft toothbrush. Vigorous brushing and using a hard bristled brush, can cause sensitivity. Ask your hygienist to show you the technique if you’re having trouble breaking the scrubbing habit or consider a sonic toothbrush. Steer clear of whitening toothpastes. They generally contain more abrasive particles that can actually cause gum recession and sensitivity. I will discuss other Sensitivity solutions next month. As always, if you have any concerns, please ask your dental professional. We can’t help you if we don’t know about it. DrJoe@LapinskiDental.com

Leaky Dogs
It might start out as a little dribble, but eventually you’re living with unexpected puddles here or there. The bottom line is your otherwise well-trained dog is suddenly having accidents in the house. It’s possible your dog is experiencing incontinence. Incontinence, or an inability to control the bladder, is a condition that can affect dogs of all ages. One of the most common causes is an infection. Although not a true incontinence, a urinary tract infection (UTI) can cause an otherwise tidy dog to have uncharacteristic accidents. These infections are painful and make a dog feel like it needs to urinate often and urgently, which leads to accidents in the house when it cannot get outside quickly enough. The most recognizable sign of a UTI is frequent urination. Not only will your dog want to go outside for bathroom breaks often, it may have accidents. The urine may have a strong odor or you may see some blood. UTI treatment might be something as simple as pain relief and antibiotics. Another frequent cause, especially for aging, spayed female dogs, is estrogen responsive incontinence. This condition is the result of muscle tone loss that affects a dog’s ability to control its bladder when it is sleeping. Usually the dog doesn’t have any leaking problems when it’s awake, but it’s a puddle-maker when asleep. While this condition is mostly seen in older females who have been spayed, occasionally it afflicts young female dogs and males. Some obvious signs are the dog is wet between its legs, frequent licking of the vaginal area or wet spots on its bedding after sleeping. Estrogen therapy is often a recommended treatment. Incontinence can also be a sign of old-age related infirmities. Dementia and senility can make a dog forget or not realize it needs to or has eliminated. As our dogs age, some of them may suffer from a decline in their mental functions. In addition to forgetting housetraining, they may wander throughout the house at night, become disoriented or display behavior changes. Your veterinarian will need to examine your senior dog thoroughly before recommending a treatment plan. More rarely, other medical conditions can cause incontinence, such as obstructions from a tumor or stones. Another condition is ectopic ureter, a rare congenital defect. This defect is usually diagnosed in puppies and can be corrected through surgery. Incontinence can also be a sign of a neurological or spinal problem, which requires a full veterinary examination and additional testing. While incontinence may be a sign of a rare or serious condition, it is more likely a sign of an infection or old age. However, only a veterinarian can diagnose the reason for leaking bladder and prescribe an effective treatment plan. With a remedy just a veterinary visit away, there’s no reason for you and your dog to live with those unexpected puddles.
