Ladies Watches & Jewellery 2018 - Autumn For the love of jewellery…

I

n this 4th edition of GMT Middle East Ladies, to complement our coverage of exceptional timepieces we are delighted to present highlights from the latest fine jewellery presentations that took place in Paris during Fashion Week July 2018.

White and pink precious metals, a profusion of glistening diamonds, coloured stones and even feathers compose masterpieces that take our breath away with their stunning designs, perfectly-cut gems, and craftsmanship at a level that only years of experience can attain. Shining examples from Cartier, Chanel, Chaumet, De Grisogono, and Piaget adorn our pages for your viewing pleasure. We are also spotlighting Van Cleef & Arpels to celebrate its latest bracelets from the Perlée collection. From Piaget we continue with “The Sunny Side of Life”, and a selection of some of the latest creations from Chopard includes pieces from Precious Chopard, Happy Clown, Happy Snowflakes and Happy Stars. Last but not least, we are pleased to introduce Monaco-based HRH Joaillerie, a company created in 2016 by Hind Hariri El Karout who, as well as designing the jewellery for her collections that accompany you for every occasion throughout the day, has created a technique to manufacture gold lace for the most exceptional creations. We hope you will enjoy this issue that we dedicate to each of our sparkling readers.

Until next issue,

Concord reaches for the moon and the stars CONCORD IS LAUNCHING THE IMPRESARIO GENT MOONPHASE – a fascinating new model that speaks the same design language as its predecessors and features a stunning new function which, like the Impresario itself, represents a fascination with the history of timekeeping that is framed in a more contemporary context. The Impresario Collection epitomizes CONCORD’s rich watchmaking heritage, with timepieces whose design is marked by a decidedly contemporary yet classic aesthetic that consummately combines traditional design cues with a more innovative and functional look. In 2018, CONCORD is introducing a complication to the Impresario Collection that unmistakably represents this harmonious blend of historical fascination and cutting-edge design: the moon phase display. On the blue dial of the Impresario Gent Moonphase, the moon and stars are set against a midnight blue background in a moon phase display that is positioned between the center of the dial and 6 o’clock, while two counters at 3 and 9 o’clock show the day of the week and the date and month respectively. This model is housed in a 40 mm stainless steel case with a stunning fluted bezel – the new signature feature of the Impresario Gent. It comes in two variants – one worn on a stainless steel bracelet and another with a brown alligator leather strap. The dial is protected by a sapphire crystal with antireflective treatment, while the watch is water-resistant to 50m. The Impresario Gent Moonphase – a comprehensive demonstration of the stunning effect that can be achieved by integrating traditional horological functions into a watch with a fresh, modern design.

FRIEZE with RICHARD MILLE A new partner of Frieze Masters and Frieze London, Richard Mille began his eponymous brand at the start of the new millennium in 2001; from its inception his creations have taken on legendary status for the way in which they have revolutionised and redefined the art of traditional watchmaking. Celebrating this vibrant, contemporary history, the brand’s presence at Frieze Masters has brought together, for the first time in the UK, a museum-level overview of some of the most exceptional, rare, and currently unavailable examples of timepieces generously loaned by private collectors.

The Richard Mille brand’s approach to watchmaking has always centred on releasing the watch from

it restricted role as a mere tool for timekeeping, augmenting and extending its visual potential by placing it directly in the crosshairs of design, art, sculpture and architecture. In this way, their

timepieces make full use of three-dimensionally

arching spaces and volumes, both for the watchcase

and the movement itself. Even the layout and finishing details of each mechanical part is treated as

essential, visually and stylistically, within the scope

of Mille’s holistic approach to watchmaking. Richard Mille: ‘Of course, a watch must be an excellent

timekeeping device, with the highest chronometric results achievable. Nevertheless, I see no reason why

it should not be fascinating and multi-layered in its

visual expressivity, both inside and out, in the same

way that a great work of art offers complex layers of comprehension for each particular viewer. Defining

these aspects during the design process is not far removed from the world of miniaturist painting,

where an entire world can open up within a very confined area of just a few square centimetres.’

According

to

this

same

methodology,

Richard

Mille

collaborated with the street artist Cyril Phan, (aka Kongo), in

creating a contemporary horological artwork, the RM 68-01

Tourbillon. The entire front and back of the mechanism’s interior have been transformed into riot of airbrushed,

rainbow-like hues, and since this includes all moving parts,

the watch is a kinetic painting, constantly changing visually as it tells the time. This watchmaking premiere, enabled by

Richard Mille’s visionary aesthetics and a process by which Kongo miniaturised his large-scale working methods— normally the size of an apartment building—elevates this timepiece to the realm of fine art.

A part of the Richard Mille group, the Parisian Publishing House Editions Cercle d’Art is responsible for the release

of all the company’s books, magazines and other printed

materials. Historically the publishing house of Pablo Picasso

and many other great names of the 20th century art world, Editions Cercle d’Art connects Richard Mille Watches to the one of the most exciting periods in Modern art, underlining the brand’s artistic approach to forging a new vision of 21st century horology.

Van Cleef & Arpels

introduces new bracelets from the

Perlée collection

where golden beads meet colourful stones and diamonds.

62 I GREAT MAGAZINE OF TIMEPIECES I MIDDLE EAST EDITION | LADIES WATCHES & JEWELLERIES

LAUNCHED IN 2008, the Perlée collection from Van Cleef & Arpels is in fact inspired from the 1920s, when the House designed gold

beads to surround some of the stones and motifs in its creations.

The beads became more pronounced in the late 1940s, when they began to form the very structure of necklaces, bracelets and rings. Later, in the 1960s, they were interspersed and braided with coral, turquoise, and pearls in the Twist collection, and in 1968 began

to adorn the Alhambra™ collection. Since becoming a collection in its own right, various interpretations have been named “Perléé pearls of gold”, “Perlée couleurs”, “Perlée diamonds”, “Perlée clovers” and “Perlée signature”.

In 2018, Van Cleef & Arpels introduces Perlée™ bracelets with new aesthetics to accentuate the beauty of hard stones and diamonds.

The result is a colourful association of open shank bracelets

in different colours of gold, each composed of a multitude of shimmering gold beads, with diamonds set on one end. At the

opposite end, richly coloured stones complement the gold colour of each bracelet:

malachite and diamonds with yellow gold,

turquoise and diamonds with white gold, and carnelian and diamonds with pink gold.

LADIES WATCHES & JEWELLERIES | MIDDLE EAST EDITION | GREAT MAGAZINE OF TIMEPIECES I 63

A second new design of Perlée bracelets exhibits a row of round diamonds surrounded by two rows of gold beads. Presented in yellow, white or pink gold, these “sparkling ribbons” can be worn

alone, or in twos or threes, blending together in perfect harmony when combined on your wrist. With a discreet clasp and a new choice of sizes, they grace any wrist with feminine beauty.

As with all Van Cleef & Arpels creations, Perlée reflects superlative expertise and savoir-faire. Each bead is reworked by hand before polishing.

The hinge is imperceptible on open bracelets, and

the inner surface is mirror polished. Diamonds are D, E, or F for

colour, and IF, VVS1 or VVS2 for clarity. The hard stones are also selected for their highest quality:

malachite with deep green

hues, turquoise for its opaque blue colour, and carnelian for its deep red-orange tone that is further enhanced by polishing.

And as with all other Perlée pieces, these bracelets combine

beautifully with the already existing rings, pendants and earrings in the Perlée collection.

in the history of the brand when it was unveiled in 2015: the ex nihilo creation tapped into some 280 years of experience in designing exceptional timepieces. The Lady 8 Flower draws on a legacy of mastery in mechanics of which Jaquet Droz is one

of a handful of custodians. It conjures up the essence of Fine

Watchmaking: creativity, precision and mechanical mastery,

with the signature Jaquet Droz touch – the Art of Astonishment – handcrafted by specialized artisans. And finally, Lady 8 Flower is an expression of the naturalism that permeates the brand’s work

and can be traced directly back to the creations of Pierre Jaquet-

Droz almost two centuries ago, in his bird cages, snuffboxes, and numerous richly decorated automatons.

This rich heritage is honored in the two latest incarnations, each issued in a Numerus Clausus edition of 8 pieces, with

floral motifs that honor the naturalist tradition. In the white gold variation, the Lotus is chosen as a spiritual symbol that

Harry Winston The Premier Collection™

Premier Precious Moon Phase Automatic 36mm The House of Harry Winston brings the Moon and the stars to the heavenly Premier Precious Moon Phase Automatic 36mm timepieces. Set against a constellation of diamonds and twinkling aventurine stars, the moon phase complication reveals all its secrets proving that mechanical complications are as intricate and beautiful as the workings of the cosmos. A CELESTIAL CANOPY Harry Winston recalls its fine jewelry expertise and brings its

legacy of precious gemstones to the realm of watchmaking. Once again, a poetic moon phase complication holds sway on the dial of these two new members of the Premier Collection,

animated with sparkling aventurine, iridescent mother-of-pearl and a constellation of starry diamonds.

Presented in an 18-karat white gold version with a glittering

blue aventurine dial and an 18-karat rose gold model with a Havana-hued aventurine dial, the Premier Precious Moon Phase

depicts the motions of our neighboring satellite with Harry Winston’s artistic flair for combining precious materials with radiant gemstones.

NOTHING TO HIDE Traditional moon phase complications stage the four main cycles of the moon as it completes its orbit of Earth. To reenact the lunar cycle of approximately 29.5 days, watchmakers resort

to two images of the moon, driven by a 59-toothed wheel that is, in turn, attached to the hour wheel. The novelty here is that

instead of displaying just one moon in the aperture, Harry Winston watchmakers have exposed the innate beauty of the moon phase complication by revealing both moons.

Poetry By Fadi Jamil

104 I GREAT MAGAZINE OF TIMEPIECES I MIDDLE EAST EDITION | LADIES WATCHES & JEWELLERIES

Poetic Astronomy Contemplating the vault of heaven, Van Cleef & Arpels dreamed of living in time with the cosmos: capturing the dance of the planets, tracing the constellations and reaping the stars, to live among them day after day. That dream has inspired precious watchmaking creations, in keeping with the Maison’s distinctive Poetry of Time®. Whether illuminating the twelve constellations of the Zodiac or reproducing the movement of the heavenly orbs, their virtuoso mechanisms bring all the magic of the universe to life on the wrist.

THE POETRY OF TIME Ever faithful to a poetic view of life, Van Cleef & Arpels instills a distinctive dimension into the art of watchmaking: that of dreams and emotions. A blend of inventiveness and fantasy, the Maison’s creations interpret the measurement of time as an invitation to imagine, wander and revel in happiness. The Maison draws from its history and emblematic sources of inspiration to depict the poetry of each instant. New tales of love and luck take their places alongside creations evoking Van Cleef & Arpels’ heritage. Fairies and ballerinas tick away the hours, while the rhythm of nature meets that of the cosmos. Representing the various watchmaking collections, each piece relates a moment of grace and enchantment.

POETIC ASTRONOMY Dazzled by the spectacle of the heavens and stars, Van Cleef & Arpels pays homage to these marvels with its Poetic Astronomy™. A starry sky, the constellations of the Zodiac, the journey of the Sun and Moon, the ballet of the planets: the creations combine the poetry of the heavens and the measurement of time to endow each instant with a unique emotion. Throughout the collections, watchmakers, jewelers and craftsmen deploy their savoir-faire to bring miniature tableaux to life, ushering the onlooker into a world of contemplation and dreams. 

PRECIOUS CONSTELLATIONS Poetic Astronomy offers an invitation to live in harmony with the rhythm of the cosmos. Today it is enriched with a new set of twelve feminine Lady Arpels Zodiac Lumineux models, which join the masculine Midnight Zodiac Lumineux watches introduced at the SIHH 2018. These watchmaking creations recreate the sparkle of the stars with an exclusive light-on-demand module, first developed in 2016 for the Midnight Nuit Lumineuse watch. This automatic mechanical movement now illuminates the twelve signs of the Western Zodiac. The astrological theme has been a dear one for the Maison ever since the first lucky medals created in the 1950s. Here, it comes to life in twelve luminous dials: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. 

MOVEMENT: Selfwinding mechanical movement featuring a Planétarium module developed exclusively for Van Cleef & Arpels, 40-hour power reserve.

A FEMININE VISION OF THE COSMOS

MAGIC MATERIALS

As part of Poetic Astronomy, Van Cleef & Arpels has revisited its Midnight Planétarium™ watch to provide a feminine interpretation. Featuring both refined aesthetics and an automatic movement developed exclusively for the Maison, the Lady Arpels Planétarium watch depicts the Sun and its closest planets: Mercury, Venus and Earth – accompanied by its satellite, the Moon. Each heavenly body moves at its actual speed, orbiting the dial in 88 days for Mercury, 224 days for Venus and 365 days for Earth. In a major innovation, the Moon also rotates around the Earth on this piece, completing its orbit in 29.5 days and bringing the dial to life with its daily dance.

To recreate the awe-inspiring experience of stargazing, Van Cleef & Arpels has taken special care in selecting and working with the traditional materials of jewelry and watchmaking. Planets of differing volumes rotate around a Sun made of pink gold, gleaming in the center of the dial. The pink mother-ofpearl Mercury and turquoise Earth have been meticulously hand-cut in spherical shapes, while Venus is portrayed by a green enamel bead, fashioned at the Van Cleef & Arpels enamel workshops in Meyrin.

The choice of planets, imbued with feminine symbolism in the case of Venus and the Moon, is accompanied by the careful adaptation of the timepiece’s dimensions to a woman’s wrist. The Lady Arpels case – 38mm in diameter and set with diamonds on the sides of the case and bezel – houses a movement redesigned for this smaller size, with an exclusive module based on an idea from Christiaan van der Klaauw. The dial’s refined design combines the spectacle of the planets with that of a shooting star in rhodiumplated gold, indicating the time with poetic grace. On the back of the watch, two apertures display the day, month and year in the midst of enchanting decoration. Two bracelets are available to suit any occasion: a blue glitter alligator strap to match the dial, and a bracelet entirely set with diamonds for a High Jewelry effect.

The familiar glow of the Moon as it orbits the Earth is brought to life by a brilliant-cut diamond, which contrasts with the midnight blue background. Evoking the depth of the cosmos, seven aventurine discs are placed in concentric circles on the dial, several rotating individually via the watch movement. The planets and shooting star thus move at their actual speeds through a sparkling environment. The same shades are repeated on the back of the case, with the celestial bodies in their respective materials reappearing on an aventurine disc. At its center, the oscillating weight continues the journey with a precious depiction of the Moon: a turquoise circle embracing a crescent embellished with diamonds of varying diameters. The emotion conveyed by the final creation combines a plunge into the depths of the universe with the beauty of fine jewelry craftsmanship.

HRH Joaillerie:

Where the Mediterranean meets high creativity and fine jewellery. “Jewels are intimately connected to our emotions. So close to our skin, they are a natural part of the woman who wears them, to the point that she almost forgets she has them on – and yet, they never forget to beautify her.”

T

hese impressive words are from Hind Hariri El Karout, founder of HRH Jewellery. Daughter of late Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, she opened the doors of her high jewellery company in 2016, in Monaco, naming it HRH, for Hind Rafik Hariri. “HRH” of course also stands for “Her Royal Highness”, and it is her intention to make sure that every woman who adopts her jewellery feels like a princess when she wears it. The names of her collections read as if from a storybook: Aura, Mirror Mirror, Silhouette, Eclat, Embrace, So One, Rose of Hope or Ultra Lace all evoke different facets of the feminine psyche. Influenced by the light and sparkle of the Mediterranean Sea that she finds both soothing and radiant, her creations aim to re-create the grace and effortless beauty of the Mediterranean shores and the lifestyle that surrounds it: timeless like the waves curving on the sea, yet contemporary and bold with brilliant light that plays with shadows, as seen with the new GRAFIK and Eclat lines. If the doors of HRH Joaillerie were opened in 2016, Hind Hariri El Karout has been imagining and drawing her jewellery for many years. One of her stunning collections – the “Ultra Lace” line – is the result of a ten-year relationship with a master lace maker from Bayeux in Normandy, France, a city and region known for their traditional French lacemaking. Together, they have developed an exclusive technique to create lace from real gold thread. The first pieces – earrings and a manchette in white, smoky or pink gold set with diamonds – won immediate praise from the press. This year, the collection is expanded with a sensational “Col de Smoking” or “Tuxedo Collar” with a removable brooch attachment, all in white gold thread and diamonds.

In addition to these creations, it should be noted that thanks to the talent, patience and investment in time and funding, this newly created art is being recorded and documented to be perpetuated by future generations. HRH Joaillerie consists of introductory level and high jewellery lines to accompany you throughout the day, from your morning jeans to your afternoon suit jacket to your gala events. All of the pieces are made of white or rose gold with or without diamonds; only the “Aura collection includes bracelets in cord and pink gold.
