Gnosis is an ancient Greek word which

means knowledge you have gained from your own personal experience. If you haven’t heard it, smelt it, touched it, tasted it, or seen it with your own eyes then you don’t really know something exists. You merely believe what someone else says. Entire religions and cultures have been created in the past by asking others to believe rather than seek their own Gnosis. This simple philosophy has helped our little business community grow and create an experience quite separate from what the media is telling us it should be. Each business has its own unique theme and our trading ethics are to work together co-operating rather than competing and having lots of fun on the way. Like anything when you gather a few people together with a common goal you don’t always have a common idea of the best

way to achieve that goal. Over the years we have had to work our way through some very challenging situations. We have grown and strengthened as a business community by working our way through these times. Modern life seems to recommend that when something doesn’t work the way you expected it to you either return it for a refund or make a fuss and leave to find a new option. This may be more appealing to your ego, but it’s only when you stay present, confront and challenge yourself that you can grow. When you really listen to each other the opportunity to understand appears. And when you put yourself in the other persons’ shoes and understand their concerns you are likely to find a solution that pleases everyone. Often the people we misunderstand the most at first can turn out to be our greatest teachers. – Mary Holstein, Gnostic Forest

COMMUNITY

Hello Fellow

The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. — Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms

L

ately I have been working to set up a wellness group to support people with a serious illness. My inspiration is Bernie Siegal, that wonderful American surgeon who discovered that cancer survivors were not the good patients who lay meekly in their beds doing what they were told. Survivors got angry when told they were incurable, survivors insisted on being treated with respect. Survivors said no. Survivors discovered what was right for them: the right treatment, the right life. Survivors were not afraid to love, even themselves. Survivors lived their life in ways that made them happy and this happiness rippled through their families and friends. And finally survivors stopped trying to survive, they just truly lived while they lived and discovered that was the gift: what their illness had shown them how to do. Survivors found they were able to ask for help. That’s a big one. It has been a big one for me. The purpose of a group, any group, is to create a community with something in common. My wellness group is, paradoxically, for those who are ill. There are other groups that seem more straightforwardly named. Alcoholics Anonymous appears obvious enough, but I have heard it is a place where no one is unknown. Fellowship is a key tenet of the success of Al-Anon. Creating a place where it is ok to admit the shit you have done and know you will be welcomed back next week is part of its genius. It is a family of all sorts. Facing the mountain of sobriety fellowship gives support

for a climb you couldn’t tackle by yourself, for goals which are only possible with the support of friends and GOD, even if GOD for you is just a Group Of Drunks. Survivors found a reason to laugh. That’s a good one. Even if I do chuckle to myself. Fellowship does not just belong to groups with names and times of meeting. A community can spring up anywhere there are people with something in common. Fellowship is in every story we share and even in our silence, sitting beside each other at a cafe or passing in the street. Occasionally we talk about the Gnostic community and somehow we know who we mean. Yes, it’s the young ones floating around in hippy-purple and green. Yes, it’s the old souls still enquiring into what life means. Yes, it is the lunch crowd, the almost-resident artists, and the weekend friends who find us a friendly place to meet. Yes, it’s the ailing who come to heal and grieve. Yes, it’s the visitors discovering us with surprise and delight. A community can last a day or a life. Survivors find their tribe and discover who they are. That’s a life one. That’s about you and me. Liz Macnamara is a hypnotherapist at The Clearing. She would like to meet others who want to laugh together when life has become a sick joke.

MUSIC

FEISTY FOLK – Words: Justin Archer / Photos: Jasmin Hargreaves

Anabelle KAY’s first EP sLipped onto the scene in 2010. Her distinctive bright voice sang about tree houses and sunflower skies, accompanied by classic folk instruments and a twinkling mandolin. Her songs were fresh, accomplished and adorable. “Yeah, sorry – I’m not so cute any more…” she tells me. The 22-year old from Terrigal isn’t fishing for compliments. Anabelle’s talking about the change in direction of her new EP, which she recently recorded in Los Angeles. “I’ve definitely moved on from what I was doing. When I wrote the majority of songs on my first EP I was just out of high school and you know – everything was dandy! And then you get into the real world and now… I’m really depressed! Sunshine and Happiness turns into Clouds and Rain (laughs)… Okay, I’m not all evil,” she concedes. Anabelle is quick to express her gratitude for those who believe in what she’s doing now. Her producer is legendary Tony Buchen who works with Lior and Megan Washington amongst others. Anabelle also treasures her ongoing musical collaboration with high school friend Adam Williams “We have like a brother/sister relationship. He’s very together – he’s the level one.” So musically, what can people expect from her latest recording? “The new EP is actually more piano and keyboard heavy. The studio we used is owned by Zac Rae who plays piano for Fiona Apple and so he’s obviously got a lot of keys. It felt stupid not to use that as much as possible, and it helped determine the outcome. We also had Joey Varunka, who drums for Beck – so yeah we got really lucky!” Anabelle’s singing talent was a secret, even from her mother, for many years. “I started learning piano when I was little. I think it’s just one of those things. You get bored playing an instrument and you think ‘I

Torn, beaten right down come the dark of the night.. Seems now whenever I try to make it better it doesn’t make it right....

wonder if I can sing?’ I sang to myself for years and then one day there was a Year 8 music night at Terrigal High and I said to mum ‘I think I’m going to play a song tonight and I’m going to sing it.” Mum nearly crashed the car! ‘What? You’re going to sing? I’m not coming!’ “So yeah, she was very unimpressed at the thought of me singing, but I made her come and she loved it. I think I was really trying to prove a point. If people say ‘you’re not going to do that’, then I just have to do it.” There was other encouragement along the GLM

way. When Anabelle was fifteen, a friend of her mother’s who had worked on the Whitlams albums, offered to record a free demo for her. “I remember he said afterwards. ‘So are all these covers?’ and I said, ‘No, I wrote them’ and he said “WelI, I thought they were Joni Mitchel songs.’ “That’s what really made me think. Because I was so different vocally, people my age didn’t gravitate towards the sound. I didn’t have the encouragement that other singers got – the classical or X factor type singers. I used to hear a lot of bad words behind my back at school, but then I also got nice words from people that mattered. You really hold on to that.â€? When she was seventeen, Anabelle entered the Telstra ‘Road to Tamworth’ competition, the same platform that introduced Jessica Mauboy. “I didn’t win but from there I was signed to Mushroom Publishing – and that pretty much ruined any Uni plans! I actually wanted to be a vet, you know.â€? Not all her friends and family were on board with her decision to pursue music. “Some people I know don’t understand why I would choose a path which is so risky. They say, ‘When are you going to do something with your life, when are you going to study‌’ They don’t realise how hard I’m actually working now.â€? Given the notoriously difficult road that musicians face trying to get a break, how does Anabelle feel about trying the TV reality route? “I was contacted to go on The Voice, but no, it’s not for me. I mean it was different for people like Matt Corby and Lisa Mitchel because there was only one show, (Australian Idol), and

it was still new to everyone. But now it seems like every channel has a reality singing show. So once one show stops another one starts, and you become ‘that girl who was on that show’. It’s like you have an expiry date. Anabelle is busy making her own plans for the year. “The CD is set to be released in April on itunes, so come May I’m going to try and hit it pretty hard and tour till the end of the year. Then around November I want to go to Brighton for 3 months and see what’s going on in Europe. The new songs are well crafted and sung with emotional intensity, even if the emotions are a little dark at the moment. Her vulnerability is beguiling – she describes the songs as ‘angry’ and they are. But they are also beautiful and defiant. And that lovely mandolin still gets to sparkle. WWW DRUMBALA COM

TOON IN

Isn’t IT time you went guerilla?

I

’ve never been much of a team player and the idea of getting ‘involved in the community’ brings me out in an itchy rash. In fact, the word ‘community’ conjures up images of hardcore hippies weaving their own underwear or growing rhubarb: it’s just not for me. There are those who like to join in and those who prefer to stand in the corner muttering to themselves. I’m with the mutterers. But when I asked a few friends (yes, I have some) how they’d describe community, they came back with words like: loved, connected, supported, helpful, sharing, blessed. Sounds good, right? So how does a certified loner like myself get a bit of that warm and loving community action? Well, recently I’ve been attempting to grasp the social nettle and embrace my local community, and I’ve discovered the perfect way for us hermitty types to get involved while still keeping our distance. I like to call it the Guerilla community approach. For those less literate—no I’m not talking about cavorting with the herbivorous apes that inhabit the forests of central Africa or starting some kind of local gang war —but rather about using stealth tactics: striking and withdrawing almost immediately and practicing random acts of community kindness. Here are some Guerilla community ideas you might like to try: R When paying for your coffee, pay for the next person’s as well. R Shop local at small businesses and be friendly to the staff. R Carry spare dog poo bags to hand out to forgetful owners. R Water your neighbours’ plants on a hot day. R Stop when you see a stray dog, check its tags and call the owner or the council. R Drag a neighbour’s bins back off the road for them. GLM

10

R Give someone a random compliment.

R When you’re walking the dog, take a pair

of rubber gloves and a bag, and pick up any rubbish you see. R Let someone go ahead of you in the supermarket queue. Just by doing these small things, you’re actually helping your local community. No, you haven’t volunteered for a local charity, or run a marathon to raise funds for the local seniors club, but you’re doing a little something every day. I guarantee you’ll quickly feel a warm glow welling up inside you. After a while, you might also find that people remember you. That passing smile blossoms into a friendly ‘hello’, and then possibly a little chat. No, they’re not friends, not even acquaintances, but perhaps this little human interaction will be enough to put a little extra zig in your zag. And possibly, when you’re next walking to the shops to buy your microwave meal for one, you’ll enjoy a feeling of belonging, without actually having to belong. PERSPECTIVE

Ethics Morals Principles

T

hese words are subjective, and that means they are open to interpretation by the individual. We all see things differently. Because our life experiences influence the way we look at the world each day, we are bound to see things from different angles. In most cases we view our own behaviour as normal and everyone else’s is a variation on that. It gets really hard at times to understand some people’s point of view, certainly their behaviour – even their ethics. We tend to deceive ourselves by thinking that we understand certain people, we feel that because they have a familiar point of view to ours they are right, yet this just means their experiences have been similar to ours. Maybe they grew up in a society with a similar code of ethical behaviour, or their family followed the same principles. We can’t ever completely understand the motivations of others. Gnostics understand that all – absolutely ALL– conflict comes from misunderstanding. It certainly makes life easier if we mix with people who have values like ours. We know what to expect from them and we also know what we can get away with. However, real spiritual growth comes when we dare to step outside our own ethics, morals and principles and try understanding a completely different culture.

GLM

12

An easy, less disturbing way to do this is to read about civilisations from the past. Try to really get a feeling for their behaviour and understand what motivated them – why they accepted the things that they did. Then see them as your own ancestors, imagine how the changes that came with time had an influence on them and eventually you end up in the 21st century in your own life. You might be able to see that the threads of influence through time change what is acceptable behaviour. Things that we once thought of as absurd or ridiculous now seem not so far left field when we see the influences that happened along the way to lead us to our current understanding. And remember we will be judged by others for our limited views also. Everyone is doing the best they can at all times, given the limitations they have that are caused by fears, doubts and lack of understanding. When we accept the things that influence other peoples’ ethics, morals and principles we can live without conflict. And when we realise that ours are based on opinions we might even be prepared to let them change with time. Mary Holstein – Co-owner of Gnostic Forest and Gnostic Bunch. Examining my own ethics every time travel to a different culture.

SOULSPEAK

KELSANG DAWA

What does your name or title mean? Kelsang (meaning “Fortunate One”) is my ‘family’ name and comes from the person who ordained me. Dawa is my ‘first’ name. It means ‘Glorious Moon’. Fortunate Glorious Moon – something to live up to! Your religious/spiritual belief? I’m a monk within the Kadampa Buddhist tradition. As a Buddhist, my lineage goes back two and a half millennia to Buddha Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha. As a Kadampa, I follow the example of Atisha, who founded the Old Kadampa tradition in the 11th century. How did you come to your beliefs? The main catalyst was an open mind! Then, the right conditions came together and I found myself picking up a flyer for meditation and Buddhism in my local library. By the time I heard my first dharma teaching, I was already living in a Buddhist community. How have they shaped you personally? They’ve helped me to have a more measured response to my problems. I’m not such a drama queen these days! I particularly like Buddha’s teachings on ‘Buddha nature’, which is our essential nature. Underneath all the bad habits, suspect intentions and ulterior motives we all have a good heart. Holding this understanding in mind has helped me so much in my relationships with people. What are your challenges spiritually? Training my mind! The heart of Kadampa Buddhist practice is to recognise that everything that happens can be part of your spiritual life. If I’m stuck in traffic, I try to practice patience. If someone points out my shortcomings, I try to practice humility and accept it, or have a peaceful mind when I tell them I don’t agree! There’s never a time when I’m without the opportunity to develop a positive mind. How does your practice take form? My entire life is my practice. The only real distinction is between my normal practice of ‘meditation’ and then the ‘meditation break’ – which is the rest of my day.

I start the day retaking my ordination vows – basically remembering who I am, and my goals. From 7-8am I do ‘puja’, (a chanted meditation) with 20 minutes for silent contemplation. It’s a huge source of my daily inspiration. During the day I may be preparing a teaching, updating websites, designing or distributing publicity, giving a talk somewhere or having a day off. I’m pretty busy – contrary to popular belief, meditators aren’t always gazing at their navel – we’re Modern Buddhists now! Where will you go when you leave your body? According to Buddhism, our mind has no beginning and no end – we are eternal beings. There is a Tibetan saying I’m particularly fond of – everybody dies, but no one is dead. The mind is not the brain; it’s not a physical thing, which can be photographed or operated on. Death is therefore the separation of our body and mind. Our body is like a guest house for our mind, so we ‘check out’, then make our way through an intermediate state known as the bardo before ‘checking in’ to our next life, with a new body. To appreciate this view, it’s helpful to contemplate the process of falling asleep, dreaming and waking up, because falling asleep is similar to death, dreams are similar to the intermediate state, and waking is similar to rebirth.

Kelsang Dawa is the resident teacher of Khedrubje Kadampa Buddhist Centre in Wamberal. He teaches meditation classes regularly throughout the Coast.

HEALING

DetoxifiY with Herbs

With their aromatic and bitter character, detoxification herbs cleanse the body of toxic and waste substances. These herbs can be used to purify the blood, digestive system, internal organs and intestinal tract. Here are just some of them:

◆ Milk Thistle Seed (St Mary’s Thistle) – Silybum marianum The seeds are used to enhance the functioning of the liver by activating the synthesis of protein. In addition, it is a hepatoprotective (protecting the liver) agent as well as a natural antioxidant that detoxifies drugs, alcohol and metabolic byproducts. ◆ Marshmallow Root – Althea officinalis Revitalizing and gently purgative, Marshmallow Root has a rich content of mucilage, which comforts an aggravated digestive system and also offers moisture to dehydrated tissues.

◆ Red Clover – Trifolium pratense Possesses gently stimulant, purifying and anti-spasmodic properties and is amongst the most extensively used of the detoxifying herbs. Gentle but effective Red clover for children as well as the aged, this herb is excellent for cleansing the blood and lymphatic systems.

◆ Slippery Elm Bark – Ulmus rubra A wonderful anti-inflammatory agent, slippery elm bark possesses laxative, nourishing and demulcent (soothing) properties which facilitates healing of the gastrointestinal tract. NOTE: It is important to talk to a competent medical or herbal practitioner prior to taking any detoxifying herbs. They should not be used by pregnant women or nursing mothers. – Lana, Gnostic Healing Centre

ORGANIC

STICK UP FOR

celery

We all want to live a long life full of great health, energy, happiness and general well being. I have some good news for you… CELERY! This ancient vegetable will help you in so many ways, and it’s in season right now. It’s also a great food to eat organic because it can have a high pesticide residue otherwise. Celery is an extremely versatile food as its entire form is edible, and can be cooked, eaten raw and juiced in a large array of recipes. Soups, salads, and juices are great ways to start, even good old fashioned celery and peanut butter can be a good starter point. Its crisp and tender texture is an unusual mouthful along with its tart and tangy flavour and watery quality making celery quite a unique vegetable. It is also packed full of vitamins and minerals including: vitamins B1, B2, B6 & C, all found in the celery stem, and Vitamins A, B3, B5, E and K. Celery is rich in calcium and sodium, making it a highly Alkaline vegetable which neutralizes foods that are high in potassium such as seeds, nuts and meat. Celery contains amino acids, magnesium, folate and essential fatty acids. There are also many medicinal benefits from this fantastic vegetable. Celery calms the nerves, aids in bowel movements, can be used as a post workout to rehydrate the body, it is a diuretic, helps fight the common cold, lowers cholesterol, good for blood pressure and weight loss. Celery can be the antidote for so many health problems – so get stuck in! – Dani, Gnostic Organics

Gnostic Mana Cafe features monthly exhibitions from the Central Coast’s leading artists. APRIL Peter Baka sources his art materials from the most unusual of places. His collections of recycled goods encompass much time searching for materials that represent aspects of his modern world and that of a bygone era. A natural affinity with the motion of recycling helping his creative ability to complete assemblages in a wide range of mediums incorporating time, movement and textures. MAY Nat Ferfoglia aka Miss Nat presents Home is where the hART is! (2013), a culmination of photography, digital collage, film & animation. These are images of Woy Woy which celebrate our retro homes, cars and random beauty. A no frills housing utopia built to raise families and workshop cars & boats. These images will often evoke childhood memories shielding us from the complexities of our modern lives. Or maybe they are simply a reminder of what is really important to us and what we can live without in order to spend more time with our families and less time working for ‘the Man’? JUNE My name is Frieda Broderick. I have been an artist since the age of eight when I first got my eager young hands onto bottles of acrylic paint, and threw them at my bedroom wall handful by handful. (Yes, my parents let me do this! And thank God for that!) Freedom of expression was the gift my parents gave me; and, thanks to a complete lack of art education until I was in my twenties, I developed my own unique style. In art I have no boundaries except my own personal one – of only creating beautiful art, leaving me free to be the artist, and the viewer the complete freedom to take from my work whatever they wish.

CREATE

SKUBZ

Graffiti Artist Skubz (Steve Evans) When did you first pick up a spray can? I was 16, out in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, and had no idea what I was doing. The results weren’t great, so I started using paint markers to create cartoon characters on walls instead. I first seriously looked into technique and working on my can skills when I was 25. What has evolved your work? Having like-minded people to offer opinions and bounce ideas and techniques each other is invaluable. Being around other artists with more skills and knowledge has always helped me push my own skills further. The Internet is a great tool for connecting with other art and artists around the world. I’ve also studied Graphic Design and Animation, which provided me with a good foundation in digital art. I was then able to expand things I’d learned onto walls. I plan to study painting and fine art next year. How do people respond to your professional pieces? When it comes to artwork, you’re always going to have critics, doubly so when you’re creating street-art. Most of the large-scale projects I’ve taken part in are community-focused, and they’ve been very well received. A group I work with even received a mention in NSW Parliament for a work in the Gosford area, and an official opening for the piece by Gosford Council. Have you ever had negative experiences? Oh sure, especially in my younger days doing illegal work. I focus on legal and commission work

now, which can have its own set of problems. Working with other artists can have you butting heads sometimes. Trying to make it as an established, self-employed artist is one of the most difficult paths I’ve chosen to undertake, but I find it pushes me as an individual and as an artist, and I’m learning from my mistakes all the time. What’s the best place in Australia for Street Art? My home town of Melbourne is a great city when it comes to street-art, but I might be a bit biased. The line between acceptance and intolerance by the Melbourne council wavers back and forth, but community acceptance and an abundance of ever-changing legal walls make it a haven for artists and enthusiasts alike. Who/What are your inspirations? I’ve always loved cartoons and animation, and it’s always been a big influence on my work. I’m a really big fan of work by Adam Phillips (Bitey of Brackenwood), J.G. Quintel (The Regular Show), and Pendleton Ward (Adventure Time). I really got into street art after hearing a talk by Sydney/ Melbourne artist Phibs, who’s been one of my biggest inspirations. Other artists like Shepard Fairey, Peque, Flying Fortress, Jamie Hewlett, Alex Grey and Salvador Dali are some of my strongest influences. How has the local perspective on Street Art evolved since you’ve been here? I believe it’s starting to change positively. Gosford Council is reaching out more and more for street artists to create commission works around the area and the Gosford CBD. Artists Creative Enterprises (ACE) is a new networking group for many artists including street artists, getting involved with GLM

areas, working with small businesses, young people, and the local community. The GAP has been responsible for almost 20 street art murals over the past year or more, and the feedback has been very positive. How do you feel about political street art? I love it, it’s so important. Everyday we’re bombarded with slogans and advertisements, images and biased news that can fool and distract us from the true state of the world. Political street art cuts straight through all that and demands your attention. It grabs you and sends a raw and undiluted message to question what we may take for granted, or simply have no idea about. What’s the future for Graffiti Art in your mind? I think it has a strong role to play, especially in western culture. It offers ways of expressing yourself and presenting your work to the public anonymously. There’s no need to be an established artist to exhibit in the street, and your audience is infinitely varied. It’s also a great way to connect with youth who might usually shy away from art and creative expression. I believe Street Art will keep evolving, it’s part of its nature.

YOGAPOSE

Parvatasana or Mountain Pose (Parvat meaning Mountain in Sanskrit) Common name: ‘the tired typist’

There are a few variations of this pose for your legs. As always, listen to your body and choose the position for your legs that feels best for you. You may choose to sit cross-legged, with legs out stretched in front of you or by kneeling and sitting back on your feet. Stretch your arms out on front of you and clasp fingers together as if in prayer. Now turn your palms outwards whilst leaving your fingers interlocked. Breathe in through your nose deeply as you rise your arms up and over your head so your palms face the ceiling. Continue to breathe in and out steadily as you feel your back stretching out. Imagine yourself lifting the top half of your body towards the roof whilst keeping your lower half firmly on the ground. This pose stretches the arms, back and stomach and improves circulation to these areas. — John Wilson, Peninsula Yoga on Gnostic

WISEGUYS

Simmer down, Samurai

O

nce upon a parable a fierce Samurai travelled to seek the wisdom of an old Zen Master. Being a strong and feared man the Samurai was not backward in coming forward with his question, “Old man, what is the meaning of Heaven and Hell?” To which the Master replied quickly, “You’re nothing but a violent lout, I can’t waste my time explaining these things to the like of you!” Angrily the Samurai leapt up, skilfully pulling his sword from its scabbard and drew on the Master screaming loudly “I could kill you for this disrespect!” Not flinching in the slightest the Master replied, “ This, my friend, is Hell.” At the realisation of his unnecessary outburst the Samurai quickly withdrew his sword and apologetically bowed thanking the Master for his insight. “This, my friend,” said the great Master “Is Heaven!” We are so often our own worst enemy. We choose at a moments notice to suffer or surrender to our own emotions and imaginings. What is relevant to the moment is left behind so we can indulge in a story we have been writing about ourselves for a very long time. “I am _______” Sometimes the story is about others “They always ________” We don’t often give fresh eyes to the moment and realise (or empathise with) what is real and important. Emotions are always passing. Observe them if you can, dear Samurais! – Emily Holstein

TRAVELNYC

Follow that Snail

a

n icy Manhattan morning – no actual snow but that wind can rip right through you. We need breakfast. And since we spent last night bar-hopping in the East Village, we’re looking to redeem ourselves with something Good. A friend in Australia told us about the Cinnamon Snail (thanks Ems), a food truck which serves organic, vegan food and has accumulated a cult following in the city since it took to the streets in 2010. It’s around 11.30 when we track the Snail down via Facebook to Midtown Broadway. We order the biggest thing on the menu, enigmatically named ‘200 year old frog man breakfast jamboree’, but no luck... “Sorry guys, we need the waffle iron for that and it just blew up. Here, try some donuts.” Free donuts are always good, but these aren’t just any donuts: creme brûlée, tiramisu, roasted plum... We order the Chipotle Seitan Burrito ($8) and Hazelnut Bourbon Pancakes ($10). Turns out these are favourites with a bleary eyed office-worker guy behind us. “When this truck is around I sneak out for an early lunch before the line gets crazy.” The burrito is lush and spicy, and that Seitan ‘meat substitute’ is pretty damn meaty. Pancakes are thick, but light, and slathered in plump berry sauce. The helpings are huge and both are completely delicious. Plus there was that extra warm feeling afterwards: No Animal was Harmed in Making Our Hangovers Better.

Seitan (say-tahn) is made from wheat. It has a similar

look and texture of meat and absorbs the flavours of spices and herbs well. It’s also high in protein making it a great source for vegans and vegetarians. Used for centuries in China and Japan, seitan is believed to have been created by Buddhist monks to help persuade followers to adopt a vegetarian diet. Note that seitan is made from wheat gluten, so not an option for Celiacs or Gluten Intolerants.

BOOKS

Dissolve away in this decadent bathing experience that is inspired by the spectacular love story of the Egyptian queen Cleopatra. To recreate a bath named after Queen Cleopatra is not a cliche, it’s a classic. The timeless goddess was famous for her beautiful skin, the consequence of bathing in milk, flowers and essential oils. There is something mysteriously feminine about Cleopatra. It is inspiring when a woman is in touch with her sexuality. Coconut milk is very nourishing, and the rose oils are incredibly hydrating. The combination makes a repairing and soothing remedy for dry and irritated skin. Pink Clay is very toning, leaving your skin soft and supple. Cleopatra used balms and scents as part of her pre-love making preparation. There were clearly no sacral chakra blockages for this lady. You will need ◆ ◆ ◆ ◆

Facing your fears and past inhibitions may be painful... but it may also give you an understanding of how to unearth and heal any past issues that are holding you back. This is the month to have patience and fortitude. Slowing down will help you to make the required adjustments needed to see where this new direction in life is leading you.

This month you may be hard at work achieving your goals and getting the recognition you deserve for your efforts. You are creating a new cycle in which you are connecting with your talents and having the knowledge to move forward in a responsible fashion. Respect, rewards and promotion are keys of success – now especially with love in the home and with family.

The Year of the

Snake T

he Chinese Calender follows the path of the moon rather than the sun. This causes the Chinese New Year to fall on a different date of the Gregorian Calendar (the one we use) each year. The Christian Celebration of Easter also follows the moon and we have a varying date each year for these Holidays. This Year February 10th saw the beginning of the Chinese Year of the Snake. 1.3 Billion people celebrated with fireworks, feasts and parades – the celebrations continue for 15 days. The popular myth behind the Chinese New Year celebrations was that Nian, an angry monster, would surface on the last night each year to destroy villages and eat people. In order to avoid this destruction the people would clean their homes and brightly decorate them. They would make loud noises with drums and fire crackers to scare the monster away. When the New Year arrived people would great each other with “Gio Nian” a friendly term to say we survived the monster – this has now translated into the modern New Year greeting. GLM

According to Chinese astrology, people born during the year of the Snake are said to be keen and determined. They know how to manoeuvre themselves toward their own destinies and destinations. They are also sophisticated and calm and not outwardly emotional, but they might have a touch of paranoia at times. China’s late Chairman Mao Zedong was born in the year of the Snake. – Mary Holstein, Gnostic Forest
