HEALING
Food is our
Medicine
T
he bountiful earth has always provided and continues to do so, for she knows how to grow and support life from her conception to end. We have the five elements… all our needs are met with air to breathe and clear, fire to provide warmth and transmute, water to nourish, bath and flush, earth to shelter and feed, ether our spirit keeping us all connected to the present. All that is, was and will be. Having our food and medicine provided for us, we just need to remember where to look and follow our intuitive senses of what to eat and be in touch with how we truly feel. Our senses become violated in modernised sped up cities with made up provided choices of fast foods with low nutrients and high fats and sugars, deadening our internal radars of how to feel what you need to source for fuelling your tank. Dieting (abstaining) from forced choices of man-made food will help resync your senses back to the world of fuel filled sustenance growing out the ground. For there is food and medicine everywhere. You have an itch? I wouldn’t be surprised if there is chickweed growing nearby where you stand. Your liver is burdened or perhaps you have been ‘celebrating’ too often? I wouldn’t be surprised if you have been noticing a lot more Dandelions of late. Your bowels have been sluggish? You may have been passing patches of yellow dock in the swampy areas of your daily walks. Noticing nasturtiums or perhaps starting to get a hankering for the rosehips in your fancy teas and lattes from your local Boho coffee shop? Your body maybe crying for more vitamin C, a random craving for dark leafy greens or beets? Folic acid or iron maybe asking for a booster shot. There is a whole apothecary at our feet. As practitioners we can provide answers to these queries so don’t fear not knowing what G

plants are where and what for. We are here at the Healing Centre to help. Just listening to what our bodies are saying, wanting or craving is a good start. With winter now knocking down its own door we are wanting more warming foods, more nourishing foods with heating spices providing circulation bringing blood flow to the extremities. Food as medicine can be as simple as a nourishing homemade hearty root vegetable soup with stimulating warming spices renowned for their anti-inflammatory properties. Anyone with a rheumatic condition or has previously endured a physical injury knows how much winters coldness can flare up pain and inflammation. Increasing circulation, we reduce inflammation. Nourishing food in winter is our medicine. Seasonal vegetables, seasonal fruits – get them into you! Nicola Kelly is a Medical Herbalist and Iridologist at Gnostic Healing Centre – see page 27.

THE HUMAN THING
O
ne of our Gnostic Rocks staff, David said something beautiful after making a mistake the other day. He saw the customer it involved and quickly and warmly offered up, “I’ve done a human thing!” The problem was acknowledged and remedied quickly and his words stayed in my heart. It reminded me of the Alexander Pope quote “To err is human, to forgive is divine” I’ve been doing my fair share of Err-ing of late. Painfully so. The pain of an angry exchange. The exhaustion of a continued misunderstanding. A fumbled attempt at care. The characters and players change -but in each experience – there I am, again, fumbling my way. The ‘me’ part of it is constant. Acknowledging the screw up is hard if we are anxious types. If we were (god forbid!) wrong what would that mean about our worth as a human being? Are we less lovable? Less important? No one needs that kind of pressure. The learning is relentless, its just that some days I’m a better student than others. I’m still yet to meet anyone flawless – although sometimes the pedestal I place others on gives me the illusion of perfection for a time. So now I have the task of upskilling my grace for the fails. How to be wrong in the right way. Mistakes and culpability are nuanced. Beating ourselves up is a waste of precious energy and time. REFLECTION: Looking at what happened outside of SHOULDS. Just the facts.
EMPATHY: How the event landed in the experience of others involved. Get curious.
ACCOUNTABILITY: How my actions contributed to these facts. How can I acknowledge them to those affected? AMENDS: What can I do to remedy the problem, keeping in mind the wishes of those affected. They are under no obligation to meet you in your reflections or reparations.
Sometimes we have to wait to atone for our mistakes. Whether intended or not we will not always be able to “fix things” The best apology is changed behaviours. If you aren’t enjoying your experience of yourself maybe have a look under the hood? Taking the time to work on ourselves and reflect, get counselling or uproot harmful habits or behaviours is something that doesn’t require the other person. And its ok to make mistakes. You just did a human thing. And with self-honesty and self-love, you can change. – Emily H G

Separation from
Nature
O
ne particularly egregious side-effect of the Western industrial lifestyle which Science and Spiritual Practices directly addresses is our separation from nature. Combined with our growing separation from each other and ultimately from ourselves, it does much to explain the mounting destruction and degradation we witness all around us. Events in the wider world simply reflect our inner world. They are a projection of collective consciousness. “Our whole culture is split,” says Sheldrake. “There’s a sense in which many of us have connections with nature as children. Then we become more and more separated from it. Nature’s just there as raw materials for us to exploit for economic growth and human progress. And there are now lots of children who hardly ever go outdoors because they’re on screens all the time. “Most people go along with the mechanistic worldview because that’s the official orthodoxy and that’s what business and education are all about. But especially at weekends and in the evenings and on holidays people revert to a completely different view of nature, seeing it as alive and themselves connected with it, the more romantic view of nature. Which is why the great cities of the Western world are clogged with cars on Friday evenings as millions of people try to get back to nature in a car. A lot of people who spend their lives exploiting nature trying to get rich don’t want to get rich because they hate nature, they want to get rich because they love nature. They think if they make enough money they can buy a little place in the country away from it all and go on retreats to a beautiful cottage in an unspoiled village with their family and friends. It’s a kind of crisis in our civilisation.” Sheldrake continues: “I think losing connection with spiritual practices impoverishes life, and regaining that connection conversely enriches life, and as I show in my book, it’s quite easy to do.
G
10
And most of these practices cost nothing. I feel that all our lives can become better, more satisfying. And through feeling more connected we can also do more for other people. It makes us feel more generous if we feel ourselves to be more connected. And the common feature of all these practices – meditation, gratitude, connecting with more-than-human nature, relating to plants, singing and chanting, ritual, and pilgrimage – they’re all bout creating a greater sense of connection with that which is greater than ourselves, and with each other. That is something that makes us happier and healthier and more able to help other people.” And that, ultimately, is the message of Science and Spiritual Practices – restore balance, heal yourself, help others, renew the world. Science relating to neuroplasticity and Sheldrake’s morphic resonance shows that our minds are malleable, even at the physical level. So-called human nature’ appears more like a work in progress. This is not a road of no return; the future is what we make it. From timeless spiritual teachings to cutting-edge science, it is clear – or at least very strongly suggested – that everyone and everything is interconnected, interdependent, and from a single source. The implications of this are vast and cannot be ignored. When we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change. Rupert Sheldrake is a biologist and author of more than 80 scientific papers and ten books. Learn more at www.sheldrake.org

Spiritual Laws of Success
Too many of us grew up with the belief that achieving success requires relentless hard work, grim determination, and intense ambition. As a result, we may have struggled for years and even reached some of our goals but wound up feeling exhausted, our lives out of balance.
I
n The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, Dr. Deepak Chopra reveals that such desperate striving isn’t necessary or even desirable. In the natural world, creation comes forth with ease. A seed doesn’t struggle to become a tree – it simply unfolds in grace. The Seven Spiritual Laws are powerful principles; put into practice they set you on a direct course to authentically achieve your goals. The laws of success are easy to understand and apply. Use these daily steps to incorporate The Seven Spiritual Laws into your life: SUNDAY: The Law of Pure Potentiality Take time to be silent, to just BE. Meditate for 30 minutes twice a day. Silently witness the intelligence within every living thing. Practice non-judgment.
MONDAY: The Law of Giving Today, bring whomever you encounter a gift: a compliment or flower. Gratefully receive gifts. Keep wealth circulating by giving and receiving care, affection, appreciation and love. TUESDAY: The Law of Karma Every action generates a force of energy that returns to us in like kind. Choosing actions that bring happiness and success to others ensures the flow of happiness and success to you.
WEDNESDAY: The Law of Least Effort Accept people, situations, and events as they occur. Take responsibility for your situation and for all events seen as problems. Relinquish the need to defend your point of view. THURSDAY: The Law of Intention and Desire Inherent in every intention and desire is the mechanics for its fulfillment. Make a list of desires. Trust that when things don’t seem to go your way, there is a reason. FRIDAY: The Law of Detachment Allow yourself and others the freedom to be who they are. Do not force solutions—allow solutions to spontaneously emerge. Uncertainty is essential, and your path to freedom.
SATURDAY: The Law of Dharma Seek your higher Self. Discover your unique talents. Ask yourself how you are best suited to serve humanity. Using your unique talents and serving others brings unlimited bliss and abundance. Deepak Chopra is a world-renowned speaker and author on the subject of alternative medicine. www.deepakchopra.com. The power of
forgiveness Born into a world of balance between yin and yang, our experience as humans may likely be an aspect of both.
O
n this journey, I have found forgiveness to be one of the many beautiful gifts we get to give ourselves. A time in my life, feeling betrayed by another, I woke in the night, asking this question, “What if I choose to forgive?” The ability to do so at the time seems very foreign, but gave me strength and made me feel like I had a choice. I did not want to remain as an unwilling prisoner behind the gates of anger, pain and resentment toward that person and deny myself the things that are rightfully mine – happiness and joy in the way I truly want and deserve them. And so, my healing journey of strength and courage began. Where each step was an opportunity to forgive again and again. The triggers would creep up from all directions; a reminder of past hurts, the tone of someone’s voice or words that I’d overhear on the bus. Each reminder represented an opportunity, in that moment, to choose to forgive.
G
14
Whilst on this journey, it helped to answer these questions:
• Why am I making this choice? • What will I miss out on if I don’t forgive? • What will I gain when I do?
I realised that the reason why I held onto the pain from the past was to protect myself from experiencing it again in the future. Causing me to avoid taking risks, as it made me feel vulnerable and unsafe. This happened because I have not yet learned the lessons from this experience. In every moment of pain, there’s an opportunity to learn and grow. To help me do this, I’d ask myself, “What can I learn from this that will make me even stronger and more resilient?” I hope that my journey helps to support you on yours. Forgiveness is one of the many beautiful gifts to help you live a happy, free and joyful life. PLACES
Well, I’ve been through the desert on a camel with two names…
I wrote this after a stint travelling through Rajasthan, India as a 19 year old. – EMILY H
1) When arriving in a small town be aware of well
dressed, young touts who can get you marijuana. They are actually in the Camel Safari business. An in-built device in this species allows it to track your every movement on any given day and be just behind the next corner AND coincidentally looking at the same shop you are!! 2) ”Maybe” as a reply actually means yes to these men. “No” also means yes. Don’t resist their advances, go on the damn safari. 3) a DESERT SAFARI will take place in the DESERT. Do not let this fact escape you.
4) If before you are due to depart on your adventure you feel in any way unwell in the stomach… delay departure! There are no toliets in the desert. 5) Travel only with men named after Hindu Gods. For the next few days you will be at their mercy. 6) The following things do not like sand in them: digital cameras, eyes, chai, clothes, bottoms. 7) Camels respond to nothing you want them to and everything of little consequence.
8) Do not expect Arabian Nights. You will have one to get your hopes up but rest assured a SANDSTORM is imminent each and every time you begin to prepare food. 9) Try as you might it will be hard to read your novel during a sandstorm.
10) Do not try to impress your camel driver, cook, drugs expert or “that other guy” with your guitar. They will become disinterested and turn up their music louder. (note: my experience of Hindi music here comprises of cymbals a bell, seven drums and one squeaky girl.)
11) No amount of stored up bum fat will cushion the blow of a galloping camel. 12) Make friendly with the desert dwelling wild dogs. They will later sleep on you. 13) When you are told “EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE” it actually means “Everything is possible, but not always available.” 14) Holi Festival is best experienced in the desert away from the crowds, drinking and excessive throwing of coloured powders and water. That is unless you bring a crowd of crazy men, beer and coloured powder with you. 15) Four day camel safari actually means two and two half days camel safari. 16) Tip drivers, cooks et al. well on the conclusion of your journey – else wise you will put on the wrong bus and some of your belongings will have disappeared. 17) When said bus arrives, RUN!!!! Indian Bus drivers insist on carrying 200 people. They will not wait for you to get on first. You will travel on the roof. 18) Everything is scary on the roof. Everything is faster from the roof. All the boys are touchy on the roof. 19) Do not sit on your bags in an attempt to secure them. This will only make you bump your head on electrical wires once you do reach town. 20) 50km = 150 km , 2 hrs = 5 hrs , 1 bus = 3 busses. 21) Assistance will be given by the camel driver who made you feel the least comfortable. He will insist on taking you to the next destination. For this privilage you will get to pay for his bus tickets (fear not he is not chasing you. You are merely going to the same place he was going to go to buy drugs). G

Winter Yoga
It’s important to remember that winter is not a time to stop your yoga practise – it’s time to adjust your practise in accordance with the season.
W
inter has arrived! The Kapha dosha (energy that defines a person’s makeup) dominates with its characteristics of coolness, dampness, heaviness and sluggishness. In the colder months the natural instinct is to rug up in front of a fireplace and hide away from the winter weather – the desire to hibernate. A nice but unrealistic notion, we have to keep moving, life demands it. You can’t escape the changing seasons; you still have to function and go about your daily life regardless of the weather. You can partially withdraw from life over winter but to do so you have to live an artificial life, fake heating, fake lighting, eating unseasonal foods, the list goes on. The recent covid lockdowns and mandatory quarantine have highlighted the adverse effects of isolation and the loss of community on mental health. What is required is an innovative approach to yoga movement. A winter practise helps you keep warm, muscles in motion produce heat in the body when they contract and extend, the process of converting chemical energy to mechanical energy produces heat, this increases the flow of blood through your body, which keeps you warm. The human body is designed to move. It heals, repairs and functions at its optimum through movement. When a person becomes sedentary every physiological process is adversely affected. Patients who have hip and knee replacements are up on their feet and moving 24 hours post-surgery. Intelligent yoga movement will help prevent muscular-joint pain and stiffness, your immune system remains strong and combined with a healthy diet helps prevent the usual winter illnesses. As soon as mobility is lost, wellness declines. Have you noticed how people walk around in contracted bodies during winter, shoulders G
16
hunched, upper backs rounded and arms wrapped across their chests all in an effort to maintain body heat. This “closed” gesture affects function through poor posture and at a deeper level prevents the flow of subtle energy throughout the body causing a decline in function and wellness. Dull, gloomy and cold weather might make you feel low and lethargic but there’s nothing more uplifting and mood changing than your regular yoga practise. There is a science behind the sequencing of your yoga class, hopefully you’re noticing that your practise has been altered to cater for the change in season. An intelligent and well-structured yoga sequence is easy to maintain in winter or any other time of the year if you’re motivated. Avoid set yoga sequences, it makes sense that the seasons have changed so why would you practice the same sequence all year round. Avoid artificially excessively heated or cooled practice areas, all that does is confuses the body’s natural cooling and heating systems. You can stay strong and healthy if you keep moving and don’t allow the cold weather to hinder your practise. We offer a zoom class option as well but don’t forget the importance of “community” and being part of your yoga tribe, come to the studio and you’ll benefit from the collective energy. Stay warm, keep moving and be gentle with yourselves. John Wilson – Principal teacher and founder of Peninsula Yoga on Gnostic. www.peninsulayogacentre.com.au

WELCOME
Gnostic neighbours
After meeting each other briefly one evening, Em sat down with one of the new Gnostic Mana owners, Kathy Kang to find out more about our new Gnostic neighbours.
K
athy (30) and her sister, Yvonne (27) are the proud new owners of the cafe that was first opened in 2001 by Mary from Gnostic Forest. “I love serving our customers and chatting to them. I love to make my customers feel welcome and make sure everyone is enjoying themselves and feeling happy.” Kathy’s face absolutely lights up when I ask what her role is. Such a people person! Her sister, Yvonne, will be the coffee and menu specialist and will do lots of the behind the scenes working with suppliers. “I love being near the water” says Kathy. She confides that she comes in early to make a coffee and drink it on the waterfront in the gentle morning light before the day begins. We discuss our mutual love of the local environment and I promise to make her a map of the best places to visit for bushwalking. She is excited to relocate to Woy Woy soon with her little dog. “My home town in China is a memorial city for fallen soldiers.” My thoughts immediately went to the memorial garden here on Brickwharf Road in Woy Woy. We both got a little quiet and gently discussed the shared human desire, to honour those lost. She described an annual event where they bring flowers to the

memorial, just as we do here on ANZAC day. Kathy studied nursing for a little while but decided it was more exciting to work towards owning her own business one day. She went against family advice to keep studying and bought a cafe in Dee Why. The sisters built it up into a thriving store which they have sold to relocate to sunny old Woy Woy. “Family always has your back but you also need to grow up and be strong!” We sat for ages sharing notes about growing up in family businesses and the unique industrious streak that environment gives a kid growing up. Her dad took over her grandmothers packaging business and it seems like the business passion has passed to the next generation too. I grew up in small business from a little corner store to now be a part of the Gnostic Corner we know and love. Although we were born about 9000 km away from one another, in different countries and cultures, I immediately feel a bond to these entrepreneurial sisters. We are so very happy to welcome them and wish them the best success here on the Gnostic Corner.

uring these strange times, with concerns about Covid and vaccines (whether you are for or against), its adviseable to keep our bodies as healthy as possible. Fortifing our natural bodily defence systems and focusing on keeping immunity high can be a wonderful way to feel empowered rather than frightened. The oxidative effects of stress alone make it worth exploring health giving habits in your daily rituals. Antioxidants are present in all berries and certain herbs, plants and trees that we use in our medicinal formulas. Pine is one such plant and pine needles can be effective for boosting immunity. They contain a great amount of vitamins C to help fight illness and infection as well as vitamin A which improves red blood cell production. Antioxidant Blend: 50gm $16 / 100gm $24 One of our wonderful herbalists, Nicola, has created a antioxidant rich tea in our dispensary at Gnostic Healing for those who are wanting to take proactive measures for their wellbeing. If you are wanting to reduce any unnecessary oxidation in your cells and ensure you are buzzing full of life force, please come in and see us to tailor a tea to your specific needs.

here are many unseen factors present when a person asks for healing. Some people feel they need to keep their illness in order to receive love, in order to give love. The desire of a sick person to get well has to be present, along with that person’s willingness to let go of whatever created the illness. Throughout time we have poisoned our thoughts with jealousy and greed. Poisoned our bodies with unhealthy foods and artificial substances and our spirits with the lack of gratitude. But most of all with no Aloha, the lack of love and happiness for one’s self. For love is the only thing that heals. For Aloha means to be happy with (one’s self) and happiness leads to healthiness and wealthiness of one’s spirit. Patience is a quality that is necessary in order to have any kind of healing take place. In modern times we are taught to rush about and to accomplish as much as possible every day. When a person has to be talking, hurrying, fidgeting,
or actively engaged all the time, this constant agitation shows the neutral observer that this person has not come to a place of healing. When it comes to our body – it repairs itself at its own rate. A human can’t force the body to mend faster. Physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual healing cannot happen without patience and stillness. When frustration and anxiety overwhelm our sense of well-being, it is time to take a break. Spend time in nature, walking, connecting with the tree people. Practice stillness exercises (bear medicine), going inside and listening to what your spirit tells you. People get sick because they don’t like themselves. They spend a lifetime searching for love in all the wrong places. Practicing Aloha has the power to help you heal. To survive you must heal yourself. A healer or Medicine Person is only a conduit for healing. The Medicine Person must put aside any personal need to be successful coming from a pure heart allowing the Universe to do the actual work. Medicine crow is a Master Shaman and Metaphysician. He is available from July for consultations on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at Gnostic Forest.

Healing Towards Happiness S
ome days I think health is an absolute requirement for happiness. Other times I believe that without happiness, there can be no chance at health. Of course nothing is that simple… In my world, happiness begets healing. I tend to believe that my thoughts create my reality, and I consider my experiences to be evidence of my mood. So if I have a headache, I’m much more likely to think the pain is the result of my stress or negativity, rather than the cause of it. But what about when illness is severe or long term? We have to admit that our health can impact our emotions just as much as thoughts and beliefs can influence our bodies. I recently made the… brave? foolish? … let’s say Conscious choice to explore some beliefs that weren’t serving me, and before long I had opened a Pandora’s box. I began feel anxious, even nauseous – so, figuring these symptoms were a result of my soul-searching, I naturally dug a little deeper. And instantly broke out in a rash. It was so itchy, I went straight for the
G
22
steroid cream, and then I worked backward through my ‘toolkit for healing’ – probiotics, liver herbs, essential oils… I considered the emotions associated with skin – grief, guilt and worthiness. I meditated. I applied more hydrocortisone. Eventually the rash did ease up, but what I really noticed was that I simply couldn’t be happy while that symptom was raging. In this case, healing was a requirement for happiness. But without that specific symptom, would I have looked at those specific emotions, discovered that herb or done that meditation? In a way, was the rash itself a requirement for my growth? So healing leads to happiness, and happiness leads to healing. On the whole, it sounds to me like a win-win. ne significant indicator that the pandemic crisis affected us all was the increase and the intensity of our dreams, known as ‘quarandreams’. Weird and disturbing dreams during the height of the pandemic included death, apocalyptic dreams, drowning, natural disasters, children missing or hurt, clusters of bugs and insects, wild animals, violence, intruders, being lost, riots and abandoned theme parks and stadiums. “I am at Disneyland. It’s empty. I run around trying to get on the rides, but nothing is functioning.” The loss of fun and social interactions gained from attending concerts and sports and enjoying fun rides is a strong emotion that the conscious mind retains and files into the subconscious dreaming mind. This adds to the overall collective feelings of loneliness, isolation, and the seriousness of the pandemic. When nothing is functioning, it suggests that things have changed – what used to work, no longer does. It’s not safe like it used to be. The subconscious mind is coming to terms with a

Not even in our worst nightmare could we imagined that a pandemic in the 21st century would bring about so much devastation in the world. Is this just a collective bad dream? new situation and finds it challenging to make the new pandemic lifestyle ‘work’. “I had a weird dream where I was dangerous and wanted by the police, but I wanted to get a book from the library and the librarian recognised me and panicked and ran screaming from the library!” The police and librarian represent the law. Pandemic law breaking is part of daily media news reporting and the anxiety of being caught not following the rules is very real in the psyche. “I dream I am facing a bull; it’s coming to attack me and there’s nowhere for me to go.” Wild animals or monsters are the dreaming mind’s way of making sense of the concept of ‘uncontrollable forces’ experienced or faced in waking life. Collective dreams can bring about healing to our psyche once we bring them to our conscious mind, making us feel less alone when we share them with others. Planetary Influences 2021
As the year moves on, the earth continues its orbit around the sun. This natural progression changes our position in relation to the other planets and the following influences occur…
June
June will bring many unexpected and unpredictable behaviours. Hang onto your seatbelts over the next few months, as emotionally you are being tested in many ways. Socialising will help you to overcome obstacles and cultivate positive relationships. Challenges may bring confusion and disappointment. Mental clarification is important as you are able to repair any misunderstandings that have confronted you. Trust your intuition because your searching for new experiences will bring an understanding of what’s in store for the future.
July
Changes in your home life reveal hidden agendas and truths through misunderstandings and impulsive decisions. Violence could bring a sense of danger which will bring to the surface new challenges. Struggling and juggling between being serious and having fun. Jealousies and emotions get the better of you as there are surprises in store with money and relationships that may not be welcomed. Focusing your energy in a positive way can help to empower you to shift your emotional wounds to healing and self love.
August
Fear of change as you review some deep rooted mental issues that threatens your financial and emotional security. The danger is your attachment to your old mental programming. Trying to change points to reorganizing and simplicity that can place emphasis on personal improvement and diplomacy. Beware of situations that lay hidden, aggressiveness and radical behaviour. Lack of discipline and impatience in the face of conflict or delays. Take the time to look at options of behaviour to improve and discover better ways and means.
