PERSPECTIVE
The Tribe became the HerD B
y definition ‘our tribe’ was our people, the ones we felt akin to. They were most likely blood relatives. In times when long distance travel was near impossible, we would marry locally and everyone in our village was related in one-way or another. We shared similar customs views, diets and moral behaviour. We knew what to expect. We also knew which member of our tribe to go to for support. There was the medicine woman who understood the plants and could remedy most ills with a concoction of herbs and spices. The sage or the Wiseman was an elder who through knowledge passed down from ancestors and life experience offered solutions to conflict both internal and with others. The oracle understood the movement of the planets and the spirits, they could see past the present into the future and knew when to move and when to wait. Each member was valued and encouraged to become unique, finding their own way to contribute their talents to the tribe. They felt security in belonging. Over time with better transport, we began travelling. This allowed us to marry further from our birthplace, we met people we were not related to and often found relating to their habits quite challenging. They ate different foods, had unusual customs and often unfamiliar moral behaviour. Things got tricky as we tried to relate, and laws were implemented to give us back some security. Societies grew and fragmented with more people having different habits, needs and concerns. Those creating the rules needed to create tighter governance to keep the peace. Over time more organisation allowed more people to move into cities were everything could be accessed, and extra services provided. People willingly moved to the convenience of modern living. Monumental change can take generations to occur, and we often notice only in hindsight the real price these changes cost. We now have convenience but not connection. We often reside in large modern homes or tall apartment blocks far away from the land where
we were born and the tribe we belong too. Families rarely live together or even close by. If you were able to step off the planet you would see that we are no longer living in tribes. We are now living in herds. The herd offers little security and we constantly seek to fit in. Fitting in as much as possible, because the ones that stand out on the edge of the herd are the most vulnerable and the easiest prey. The survival of the herd is in everyone responding and behaving as one. Individuality is frowned upon not celebrated. Something happened? Becoming modern and more civilised, humanity has left behind so many wonderful benefits of tribal living. This has been described as evolution and most people would also expect evolution to infer things improve. However, not all evolution is progress. Evolution is defined as ‘change in the heritable characteristics of biological populations over successive generations.’ The beauty of living in a world of duality is that we cannot have a situation without a solution. When we discern, and judge situations we are taking a view and seeing things as beneficial or useless. At that very moment we create the remedy. Changing our view with a will to see the positive, will ensure the solutions appear. Rather than mourn for the lost tribe we can recognise the short comings of modern living and use new wisdom to re-awaken the herd, become unique again, offer and accept each other’s individual talents. Modern conveniences, gadgets and toys give fleeting happiness but not long-term satisfaction, they are distractions and do not have consciousness – not yet! Things with consciousness like nature, animals and people, feed us on subtle levels and create a feeling of happiness that lasts. Our souls recognise consciousness, this is what gives us the feeling of being alive and we know we belong to this world. As we move forward into a new world, I suggest we make our common prayer for humanity to awaken and live-in freedom and co-operation. Each day using gratitude and kindness to create feelings of security and belonging for each other. INTERVIEW
THE BARBERING BIKER
ROGER BROOKS PHOTOGRAPHY
Chris Keeble is a 60 plus Granny who rides a Vintage chief Indian motorbike she has customised and named Calamity Jane. These two ‘vintages’ travel to as many places as possible documenting their adventures on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. Chris is a writer and producer of musicals, however since Covid all have been shelved for the time being. Chris is preparing for a new project Called “The Barbering Biker” (yes Chris is a hairdresser, barber/stylist) travelling to country pubs doing makeovers, meeting the community and hearing their stories. G
6
Describe Chris Keeble and what gets her inspired and motivated? I’m driven by passion, creativity and seeing things come alive and also the joy of seeing people happy. Once I’m passionate about a project or anything really. I’m committed all the way, it’s 150%, I’m over the top and I over deliver, like my motorbike! I get inspired by great ideas and new adventures. Oh and also my two granddaughters! Being a woman in the 21st Century, how do you feel blessed or challenged when you think of the lives of your mother or grandmother? Oh we are so lucky and much of our freedom and independence comes from those women of the past. The suffragettes to the feminists –
they have woven a terrific landscape for women of today, but we still have a way to go. That song ‘I am Woman’ by Helen Reddy still holds true. It really is an Anthem for us. So many women from the past have inspired me. Often when I’m out riding by myself and a small bit of worry creeps in about where I’m going, staying etc, I think of some amazing women from the past and even today who are riding solo in all parts of the world (remote, dangerous countries). If they can do it. I sure as hell can! On your journey through life have you felt inspired, motivated or obligated to be or do things? One of the reasons I like motorbike travel and the lifestyle is that I feel really at peace with just being me. When I’m out on the road by myself I’m not obligated to anyone or anything. Women in general have this nurturing thing to worry about everyone etc. I’m either working, cleaning, cooking, baby sitting etc. so being out in the middle of nowhere, is so liberating. I only have myself and thoughts to talk to and not one person asking me to do anything. Motorbike riding inspires me all the time… when it’s just me, the motorbike ( Calamity Jane), the environment – I’m constantly inspired with ideas. What major events have altered your plans or directions in life, and in hindsight would you have made different decisions? The ending of my 25 year marriage, selling the family home, along with changing jobs and moving to another town. The big 4 hit me all at once. Don’t get me wrong, it was all mutual and done with great respect for each other, it could have been worse for sure. It’s one of those sliding door things. Had it not all happened I would not be doing what I do now. There is no way I would have had the experiences I’ve had since going it alone. I’m grateful I have my health that has allowed me to do what I do to. Overall I LOVE being single and free. Im alone a lot but never lonely. Plus I have wonderful mates and family.
Once I got over the splits (hubby, house, job) it was head down, bum up and let’s get on with life. You don’t get second chances and now I’m in my 60’s I just don’t want to waste a second being in any other mind set but positive and inspired about what life has to offer. There is still so much to see and do. One of your favourite sayings is from Leonard Cohen: ‘ There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in’ . What advice would you give as we head on into a post COVID world? We have to find the positive in everything. I truly believe that all the bad crappy things that happen, have an upgrade. It’s hard sometimes to even think that a tragedy or a negative can have an upside. but we have to dig deep to find it. There is a purpose to why things happen. You can either curl up in a ball and slowly die or you can say, ‘OK that’s a real shit thing that has happened. BUT where is it taking me and how can I grab those opportunities and make them something.’ Every crack has a light that comes in and we need to follow it. OH and my other favourite saying is “ Well behaved women rarely make history” By Elanor Roosevelt. I love that too, gives me an excuse to push the boundaries a bit! Chris is available for speaking engagements and also as The Barbering Biker for events, festivals, fundraisers etc. www.theaussie-theindian.com www.barberingbiker.com www.rockumentary.com.au G

elf responsibility. Ewww, gross. These last few weeks (months, years?!?) have been a rollercoaster for me and for many people I love. For our circles it’s included pushing outside of comfort zones, being prompted to look at behaviours and having immense change thrust into their lives. For the wider community, it’s been having freedoms and habits modified by a global pandemic and the fear surrounding it. Within any experience there is always a way through and not every path is wide enough to bring your support crew. Some parts of the journey get to be done alone. To see these times, whether chosen or circumstantial/ imposed as opportunities for growth can soften the impact. We can, with mindfulness or retrospect, reframe what we tell ourselves about our experiences.

TEA
Qigong Tea F
or Autumn we have put together a blend of teas inspired by the ancient philosophy of Qigong. Qigong aims to increase health through promoting the movement of Qi (energy) in the body. The four seasons provide a way to regulate the Qi. Each season is governed by an element and each element is linked to organs in the body. Traditionally autumn is the time of metal. Metal governs the organs of the large intestine and lungs. Our warming blend of teas to enhance the function of the lungs and large intestine includes Echinacea to help boost the immune system, Eyebright and Mullein for healthy lung function, Thyme, a bitter tonic to aid digestion and finally soothing Liquorice and Marshmallow to help maintain the healthy function of both the lungs and large intestine.

ay this year marks the 10th anniversary of Peninsula Yoga becoming “Gnostic” but my yoga journey goes back much further than that. It’s been a journey of evolution, self-discovery, recovery, adulation and interspersed with great highs and lows. Becoming a full- time yoga teacher and the first yoga studio owner on the Peninsula was something I could never have imagined. I originally worked in an occupation completely alien to the world of yoga, I was a Sergeant in the NSW Police Force, I served 25 years of which I am extremely proud. My service as a Police Officer certainly gave me first-hand experience in the plight of first responders and the trauma that occurs by simply doing your job. Shift work ruins sleep patterns, it leads to poor eating habits and routine doesn’t exist. The saying goes that you don’t join a job, you take on a lifestyle. You experience the first worst of humanity, resulting in all the psychological damage that goes with constant bombardment. That experience has made me a much more empathetic yoga teacher and I’ve been fortunate enough to run classes specifically designed for front-line workers. I attended my first ever yoga class on the recommendation of my Chiropractor who happened to be a very good yoga teacher. I was being treated for a severe back injury and yoga movement was suggested as one method of treatment. Carlo introduced me to yoga and was the catalyst for my journey into yoga teaching, basically he ignited the spark through practice, education and inspiration. I soon came to realise that the psychological effects of a physical injury can be much worse than the injury itself. You start to identify with the injury and the pain, it becomes all-encompassing and takes your focus G

away from every aspect of your life. I learnt that the body and mind are not separate entities, the reality being that the functioning of one affects the other. Whatever happens in the mind will be reflected in the body, whatever happens in body will be reflected in the mind. I received great benefits, from yoga from those early classes, I lost weight, I became more mobile, gained perspective and developed healthy sleep patterns. I was given the opportunity to teach classes very early in my yoga journey, I saw the benefit people were receiving and how much my own condition improved, I knew that yoga was my purpose in life, my Dharma. I undertook formal yoga teaching training, became an apprentice teacher (which doesn’t seem to happen anymore) and intensified my practices. I had a few setbacks along the way with injuries and trying to teach yoga while learning all the bureaucratic obstacles of running a business. I persisted, offered free classes, I hired various community halls, worked at gyms from Hornsby to Wyong and eventually developed clientele. The first studio I opened was in Woy Woy where I spent 5 years, eventually, starting at Gnostic 10 years ago. The move to Gnostic corner was a game changer for showcasing local yoga, the gnostic group of like-minded businesses and people all are committed to wellness and selfgrowth. You can see from journey that Yoga is both transforming and life changing. The world of yoga has completely changed while I’ve been involved. There has been an incredible amount of interest and a massive influx of practitioners as the healing and wellness benefits of yoga become known. It was once considered the domain of mystics in the east and hippies to the west, yoga has now become a legitimate mainstream form of healing across the world. The internet and social media has helped spread the good “yoga” message but unfortunately has also created a false image with an emphasis on physical contortion rather than all the overall aspects of yoga as a healing science, some of the images on Instagram couldn’t be more un-yoga. You don’t have to be a physical gymnast or be able to meditate like a Zen Monk or bow before some faux guru to practice and benefit. The success and longevity of Peninsula Yoga is reflective of the quality of yoga offered. I acknowledge the thousands of people who have
practiced yoga with us, some have gone on to become yoga teachers and are presently teach at the studio. I’ve been fortunate enough to have some customers who have been with me from the start and I appreciate their patronage more than they’ll ever know. I’ve worked with some magnificent teachers and I’d like to mention Michelle Flynn who introduced and established the Yin style yoga and Faye Schindler who offered incredible business insight and therapeutic yoga classes to the studio. Regardless of your physical condition, fitness, mobility, flexibility or balance I can provide a class for you. Yoga is a great adjunct to other physical exercise modalities; it can be used for rehabilitation, therapy, weight loss, anxiety or simply a way to move your body in a mindful way. Yoga offers you techniques to help relax, destress and sleep soundly, advice on diet and constitution, appropriate foods along with detoxification practices are available. Yoga is much more than stretchy exercises, it’s a blueprint for “right” living. Basically, if you can breathe and feel there is a suitable yoga practice for you. Peninsula Yoga now offers yoga teacher training with an extensive range of education
packages available for post and undergraduate students, if you have interest in becoming a yoga teacher and would like to study locally on the central coast, have a look at our training prospectus. https://immersion-yoga. com/200-hour-immersion-yoga.../ The yoga teaching journey started in a community hall in Ettalong years ago which has led to me teaching interstate and internationally, and as a pioneer of local yoga I’m looking forward to the next 10-year phase. I’ll continue to offer traditional accessible yoga without gimmicks. The 2021 teaching team is the best I’ve ever been able to offer. The teachers, Maureen, Carolyn, Elif, Nicole and Gina are highly qualified, ethical and very experienced. The longevity and success of Peninsula Yoga is a testament to the quality of yoga we offer and the remarkable wellness results we achieve with our clients. Create your
Sacred Space
W
hen we find ourselves caught up within our worldly journey, we need to recognise that our own sacred body is sensitive or uncomfortable and needs to be tendered to gently. We should take time and ask how much does our eternal self need, love, care, and attention? To create a safe space, a nurturing retreat is a gift to yourself. Whether your space may be situated within a home environment, including sacred altars, or placed amongst the bearings of nature outdoors, the most important aspect of a sacred space is how the energy feels. In particular, this space should serve as the place where you leave behind chaos of the world and go inward for healing and restoration. This is a personal process based on your intuition and inspiration, a selfcreation, a space where you can retreat and wholesomely draw yourself inward through sensory objects that inspire your senses of Sight, Smell, Sound and Touch, completely becoming aware of the physical body and its own personal energetic entity. By taking the time to allow yourself to be within a sacred space for introspection, you will connect to the higher vibrational frequency of love and light within your soul. – Ruby-Mae, Gnostic Forest
