PERSPECTIVE

UNDERSTANDING

CHANGE O

ur world is changing, there is no doubt about that. There is much debate about what these changes are, and how they have come about. Is it climate change caused by human behaviour? or natural climate cycles? Has it being engineered by some higher force? Currently we are spending a lot of energy debating these important questions. Let’s get back to the point of agreement – things are changing! Ask yourself when did this start? The answer would be never. It never started because things have always changed. I like to look at nature for answers to most philosophical questions. And I observe in nature things are always changing, they are either growing or dying, but nothing is static. If I expand my thinking out further I see the known world is changing with every new invention. One step inevitably leads to the next. If we had not invented the turbine jet engine we would not have invented aircraft. If we had no aircraft we would not need air traffic control stations with radar receptors etc, etc. If we could step back even further and look at the planet from outside, we would notice the things that are improving are the things where human co-operation has continued alongside nature. After all we are part of nature. From space there is no visible separation. We would also see that the systems that are breaking down are the ones that no longer co-operate with the natural order. When mankind interferes and tries to dominate, we lose the balance of the natural order. We create toxic chemicals that upset the balance of both our planet and our bodies. Then we spend a lot of energy in the form of money, time and emotions debating the best way to correct the imbalance that we created. Hardly the behaviour you would expect from the most advance species. When we observe nature we see that there is a high level of co-operation in change. The waves crashing on the shore, biting away at the

sand. The ebbs and flow of the shoreline show little to no resistance, the shore co-operates with the waves adjusting and allowing the changes to take place. Then the most intelligent species arrives and builds rock walls to stop the waves influence on the shore, builds apartments on the newly improved solid shoreline and get surprised when a storm event floods the buildings? With time we will evolve and become more intelligent and comprehend our place in creating reality. We will be drawn forward to live in co-operation with each other and mother nature. A curious thing is that as the field of understanding rises often new inventions appear simultaneously at completely separate locations in the field. Dr. Hans von Ohain and Sir Frank Whittle are both recognized as being the co-inventors of the jet engine – even though each worked separately and knew nothing of the other’s work. With a more thoughtful approach we can slow our societies desire for rapid change and allow the natural order to restore harmony and balance. Like the shoreline we can co-operate with nature and adjust our position, allowing a new reality to appear. As the field of understanding rises this advanced behaviour can spread rapidly across the planet. So Mote It Be. Mary Holstein, the creator of Gnostic Forest

DEEPWATER DRAGONs D

ragon Boat racing is one of the fastest growing aquatic sports in Australia. It’s a team sport that brings both women and men of all ages together to enjoy some time on the water in a low impact physical activity. Dragon Boat racing is popular all around the world. Its history began in China two thousand years ago as a rite to awaken the hibernating Heavenly Dragon. Awakening the dragon, traditionally a symbol of water, was meant to avert misfortune and encourage rainfall needed to ensure bountiful crops. Dragon Boating is a sport that offers a wide range of opportunities for people. It not only caters for those that just want a fun way to get fit, but also those who may want to challenge themselves by setting goals or who may want to race at a competition level- something that many thought they would no longer do or have participated in. It is a sport where our senior community can work with our younger community, all learning and inspiring each other no matter the age. It’s great for singles, and a very popular sport for couples and families who are looking to be able to do something active together that is team orientated. There are not many sports around that can accommodate this.

Dragon Boating is not only great for strength and fitness, but it is also great for your soul. Belonging to a club, one that focus’ on the social aspect as well as the sporting side, brings another lot of benefits, like meeting new friends, social gatherings and trips away. The Deepwater Dragon Boat Club is your local club providing a great sport and active recreation to the Central Coast Community. We provide a strong sense of belonging, we encourage, and we support on many levels. The club competes at local regattas, from Sydney to Urunga throughout the year, however as the Club focus is not just about competition but about social connections we attend many of the Northern Region Regattas during our off season for weekends away, as they are great for the team spirit and team building. Why not give the sport of Dragon Boating a go? You have nothing to lose, but so much to gain if you find this amazing sport and club is for you!

Playing from the

heart

So what is Drumbala? Drumbala is a Central Coast/ Peninsula based African djembe drumming organisation run/facilitated by Warren and Katy Loades that have been operating for 15 years now. We come along with a van full of djembe drums to bring fun and rhythm to the community which include adult and teen drumming courses, incursions for vacation care and public schools, classes and events for adults and children with special needs and disabilities, health and wellbeing events for seniors, community events and much much more.

How did you arrive at that name? In October 2005 we were asked to facilitate a one day beginners drumming workshop in Port Macquarie. We set about putting a class together and whilst meditating, the word “bala” came to Warren. On investigating the meaning of the word “bala” we discovered it meant the strength within or to play from the heart. So Drumbala was born and this is where it all began. Drumming is reported to relieve stress and anxiety connecting us to each other and the earth, creating a sense of belonging without the need for words. Can you give us an example of this? We see and experience this every time we come together with a group of people and the drums!!! Whether it is with people with disabilities, dementia, children, adults and even animals, they feel the uplifting energy of the sound of the drum, which is such a deep primal feeling that we all have within us and it naturally brings out inner joy. Drumming, besides being a great way to release stress, can be very meditative and calming and one can experience a “natural high”.

There is a term called “drum rescue” – the way that life can turn around after joining in a drumming circle? We encounter many situations like this where some have lost loved ones, gone through the battle of cancer, divorce, depression and anxiety, problems

with their teenagers or simply moving to the Central Coast not knowing anyone. Through just being present and honouring each individual as a loving soul we create a fun and safe place for them to grow and heal and have a lot of fun and laughter together with the “magic” of becoming one with the drum and one with the group. Many great friendships form within the class and a lot continue Katy and Warren from there. The outside world falls away when we all come together.

Have you seen the walls of difference dissolve through joining Drumbala? Oh yes!!! Drumming builds self-confidence and people often reach out to each other in the group and form great friendships that they may never have had outside the circle. We do a lot of work with the aged and special needs and disabilities and we have so many stories we could share of people who are finding their rhythm and voice and experience such joy and then their disability seems less severe. We also see many who struggle fitting into the mainstream of life and when offered the opportunity to experience drumming find that within a very short time they are co-operating and communicating, finding self-confidence, smiling and even laughing at themselves and each other as they try out this new experience. The greatest gift for us is to be able to share our passion and help make a positive difference in the lives of everyone in our community. Connecting people with rhythm and having fun with a drum is what Warren and Katy from Drumbala love to do! Tuesdays is Ladies Drumming @ Gnostic Corner. See more at www.drumbala.com G

May there always be work for your hands to do; May your purse always hold a coin or two; May the sun always shine on your window pane; May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain; May the hand of a friend always be near you; May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

ARTIST: IZZY IVY How would you describe your art for someone who couldn’t see? I am inspired by creating the unseen, after many years of doing energy work and having Synaesthesia. It felt like it made more sense to me to capture things that can’t be captured by photograph. I have spent much time squinting at sparkles working out how to paint iridescence! Creating glowing, shimmering, holographic, illuminated, mystical beings. Essentially I love to capture magick or as I call my painting workshops “Anchoring Light’. Reminding people that magick does exist and we can perceive so much more when we see through the eyes of our heart and souls. I am also fascinated by the natural world, experiencing nature as the physical embodiment of this vibrant life force energy. Incorporating the aetheric with flowers and plants and their own geometric grounded language. What’s the most satisfying part of your creative process? Painting the eyes! The final moments of creating the sparkles which bring the whole piece to life. Also that I can literally create anything, any world, any dream reality inside the window of the canvas, simply with coloured pigment. It is a very magical, high vibrational experience whist paradoxically very grounded almost tribal.

Since stepping up in devotion to this work (play?) for grounding light and high vibrational messages through this art, I have continued to receive more information. Sometimes it comes as a strong wave of energy where I have to stop everything and let it move through me. Often my intellect can’t comprehend it, yet when in front of the canvas the content unfurls. I usually have a half formed Your art feels quite symbolic, do you have a Idea of the theme I want to explore and a basic spiritual practice? structure for what I will create. I see it as a Yin I love to ecstatic dance, and dance myself into and Yang process, the intention and the basic a trance state. This is often where I receive most structure/idea, then I allow spirit to dance of my ideas, getting my mind out of the way and through me and fill in the rest. Simply being in feeling connection to all that is. this creative flow state allows more information to come through and often I am surprised that the theme I have chosen to work with reveals more than I imagined. It’s as if it’s actually teaching me and answering questions I may have had, as the theme of my paintings will be paralleled in my life. Meet Izzy at a Special Event at 7pm April 23, 2020 at Gnostic Mana Cafe.

ROCKS

Scheelite oR not Scheelite? W

e have been researching the providence of a newer release of stone, listed as Scheelite, from Turkey. The beautiful blue banding is highly attractive and reminiscent of Blue Lace Agate and Hemimorphite with a deeper royal blue streak. Something didn’t seem quite right so we sought out confirmation from an Australian industry leader (who confirmed from Turkish government geologist). It was as we expected, mis-identified! The story goes a smaller miner went down into his mine one night with a UV light and the stone fluoresced! He assumed it was Scheelite and labelled it as such but no testing was done at the time. After testing it was discovered to be Blue banded Dolomite (The blue being caused by iron) but the name had stuck and not many have bothered to correct it. Mislabeling and misidentification does happen at times. Here at Gnostic Rocks we enjoy finding the truth of the matter for our customers as they catalog and classify their collections. The beauty is the same but the identity is important.

Mindfulness in relationships

R

elationships with our family, friends and colleagues can be one of the most fulfilling experiences in our lives and they can also be challenging at times. We may get triggered by the tone of someone’s voice, the words they use or their behaviour. This causes our racing mind and heightened emotions to take over, leading us to react and say or do something we may later regret. The same patterns seem to repeat themselves year after year and we either dread facing these situations and people or avoid them. Mindfulness can support us in these types of situations. The practice of mindfulness trains us to purposely direct our attention and therefore increase our ability to better respond to situations instead of reacting to them. How does mindfulness work? Neuroscience research shows that the practice of mindfulness, over time, allows us to strengthen our brain’s neural pathways that improve the brain’s attention muscle. This improved attention gives us the ability to pause and become more aware when we are caught up in non-beneficial habitual thoughts and emotions. From this place of self-awareness, we are now empowered to make positive conscious choices on how to respond appropriately in the situation. The key to getting the benefits of mindfulness is consistent practice. Consider practicing

the below mindfulness meditation for ten minutes a day. Place your awareness on the way your feet feel touching the ground, then move up and bring your awarenss to the way your legs and back feel touching the chair. Bring your attention to your breath, by following it’s journey from your nose, into your belly and back out again. As you breathe in and out, count this as one. Next breathe in and out, count as two and continue counting your breaths this way until you reach nine. Then start again from one to nine and continue repeating these cycles. It’s important to note: when your mind wonders off during the meditation, do not judge it. Just notice it. Then bring your focus back to your breath and continue counting where you left off. It is the act of bringing our focus back to our breath that trains our brain to bring our attention to the present moment sooner and sooner. With this ability, when triggered by a family member, friend or colleague, we will be able to pause to make even more conscious choices that bring us less stress, more calm and joy. Eva Lenghart is a self-development writer, intuitive artist, life coach and motivational speaker, offering Mindfulness courses and a self-help tool called Confident Woman Freedom cards at the Gnostic Forest. www.radiantcreator.com. Gnostic Mana Cafe features monthly exhibitions from the Central Coast’s leading artists. APRIL: Natalie Ingram I am an Artist who has a ‘passion for fashion’ and a ’love of the ocean and nature.’ In this latest exhibition I have decided to combine my great loves to incorporate a unique sense of ‘Self Expression and Freedom Within’ Combining the Earth’s Elements with the Spirit’s purpose to ‘love, live and nurture’, these paintings are designed to provide a refuge and strength from the ‘mass disassociation of true self’ that has riddled our society and it’s truth.’ Please enjoy and believe in your purpose, and share your self-expression, which is your gift to us all on this beautiful Planet .

Terese has studied art at East Sydney Technical College, has exhibited in different art venues, and she continues developing her themes which are significant to her philosophy in life, beliefs, personal experiences as well as observations on people based on conversations. Terese continues being inspired by music. Her “Etude” series is based on a French musical term meaning “a study” She explores the boundaries and develops her style by interrelating the nuances of sediment, depth, colour and movement. Her inspiration is based on classical / jazz music and mythology. Her theme on Debussy’s water theme “La Mer” is a subtle and playful portrayal of an adoration of the sea. These themes are in the style of abstract expressionism, acrylic on canvas. This series entwines elements of Fire, Water, Earth and Air. Another series which is totally different in the medium used and theme is based on Jung’s theory of “Archetypes”, using simple and effective papercuts based on thinking, feeling, sensation and intuition on twins. This work encompasses the theory of anima (feminine principle) and animus (masculine principle) the collective unconscious and archetypes.

JUNE: Adam Fletcher I have always been fascinated by photography since my early days of high school. Starting out with my own darkroom and processing black and white film. Once digital photography became affordable I started to spend more and more time getting out in nature and discovered the world of Macro photography. I still like to spend time with landscape photography and nature in general but most of my photography is now based on Macro- especially jumping spiders. I take great pleasure in showing the people who view my photography the amazing world we live in. I have lived here on the peninsula for over 20 years now and love the natural beauty that surrounds us, waterways and beautiful beaches which have recently inspired me to photograph with a drone for a totally new perspective.

YOGA

Hatha YOGA

T

In Child’s Pose I lay my burdens down. In Child’s Pose I rest. In Child’s Pose I renew my faith. In Child’s Pose I breathe.

he philosophy of yoga states quite clearly that the body and mind are not separate. Whatever happens in the body will be reflected in the mind, whatever happens in the mind will be reflected in the body. A person who is suffering from an emotionally traumatic experience will quite noticeably and unintentionally alter their physical posture in response to the mental trauma. The upper back will round, the shoulders rotate internally, they become stooped and very protective of the heart area. The physical reaction to emotional trauma blocks the flow of energy around the body, the blockage causes a stagnation in the body and further disease will follow or intensify. The body and mind permeate with energy which in yogic terms is referred to as prana which translates as life force or life energy. The concept of prana appears in all the body-mind modalities, ki as in Reiki and chi as in Tai Chi. Chakras (spinning wheels of energy) or energy centres comprise the model of the energetic and subtle body. This is where the vital life force (prana) gathers. They’re located along the spine from the pelvic floor to the crown of the head, each has a specific colour and spiritual quality and are associated with a corresponding psychological, physical and emotional states necessary for the development of the “whole” person. The subtle energies of the body flow through the body via channels referred to as nadi’s which

connect the chakras and move the energy. It’s very important to note that the concept of prana, chakras and nadis is subtle. You can’t go to the Doctor and ask to have your chakras X-rayed or scanned, they don’t exist in a physical realm. Hatha Yoga was developed to circulate, cultivate, control prana and channel energy around the body. It’s much more than a form of exercise, much more than being physically strong or flexible. In the Western world the ideals of yoga have been distorted and focus on contortions of very flexible bodies. Asana or yogic movement aims at creating, developing and distributing subtle energy around the body. The physical attributes are a very beneficial adjunct. The reason a yoga class is sequenced in a particular way, the time a pose is held and counter poses practised is about energy control and movement. There’s a lot more happening than stretching muscles. Think about the subtle effects – the inner-cise. Challenge your teachers and ask questions about the class structure and how it relates to prana. Hatha Yoga is a very complex science that draws on thousands of years of practice and philosophy which has enormous health benefits both physically and mentally. John Wilson, www.peninsulayogacentre.com.au. John is a true local, having been a resident of the Woy Woy Peninsula for 30 years and has offered Yoga classes for over 10 years.

WELLNESS

Managing Mould, Humidity & Viruses

D

oes Humidity aggravate your aches and pains, leave you feeling lethargic, foggy in the head, cause your skin to itch, your eyes to water or itch. Do you have a nocturnal cough, a wheeze, tightness in your airways or sinusitis? You may or may not be aware, that the increasing mould spores associated with humidity are connected to all these symptoms and we do have natural very effective solutions at The Natural Apothecary in Woy Woy. From the list below herbalists select 5-6 herbs to support you as an individual and prescribe them in a 200ml bottle. A full Herbal Medicine consultation may be required if you have a complicated case. The below herbs are listed by their traditional & anecdotal uses. • Remove the source by using an Air Purifier and Dehumidifier. (Our recommendation is on display in the clinic) • Use natural anti-allergy (anti-histamine) herbs such as Scutelarria Baicalensis and Albizzia to reduce these annoying symptoms. • Reduce the mucosal inflammation in the airways and sinuses by using Ribwort and/or Licorice. • Reduce the mycotoxin level by using specific herbs such as Neem, Clove and berberine containing herbs such as Burr Marigold, Coptis or Golden Seal. • Enhance your immune system using cordyceps, echinacea or Andrographis. • Use a garlic mullein ear drops if your ears are affected. • Clear excess wax by using ear candles. • If bronchial constriction and wheeze is an issue, we use Adatoda to open the bronchial airways. These symptoms need to be taken seriously as long-term mould exposure can lead to: • losing your hair • anxiety • confusion or memory loss • numbness in hands and feet • stomach pains • sensitivity to light • gaining weight for no reason • muscle cramps and chronic lethargy Most of all, don’t suffer, try natural alternatives that heal mucosa over antihistamines that mask the symptoms. Our herbal formulas are so much

more supportive and effective in turning your health around. The same approach is taken for viruses. Enhance your immune system when travelling on public transport and working in air-conditioned offices. Take anti-viral herbs at first sign of a cold. My family and I are never without an immune /cough/ cold mix in my bathroom to take at first sign of a cold, sore throat or cough. I feel supported knowing I can reach for this when required. Most of the time it stops the virus in its tracks. When clients use the herbs later it generally shortens the duration and severity of the virus. STORY

W

hen the train came to an unexpected halt that day, Tina, all four foot ten of her, jumped up and started shushing everyone. She was pointing to Fadila who had young Basim asleep in her arms. Tina and Fadila have now become best friends. Fadila is helping Tina with her English skills. None of us disputed the need to keep quiet, so we whispered about our transport dilemma. Basim did wake later, his smile and his wanting to feed us all rice crackers was hell cute. There was a collective desire to keep the young fella from fear, and I’m sure that was a factor, but that initial agreement to keep our voices down was crucial. It’s my point number one. I’ll tell them experts. “There was a sleeping toddler, so we all kept our voices down.” About fifteen minutes later, Enzo had to change Tyson’s colostomy bag. Tyson was only nineteen when a police car hit his push-bike. The poor bugger’s future as a professional triathlete was smashed along with his C5 vertebrae. Confined to a wheelchair and needing the help of others for life, we were all humbled down big time when

Tyson told us, “It was the best thing that ever happened to me, I was totally up myself before the accident.” Tyson has one of those real contagious laughs that got us able-bodied folk joining in and forgetting our woes. Some of us would be late for stuff; Roger had a job interview for an attorney’s position in a big city firm, and Robyn was meeting her daughter at the airport. Gwyneth’s claustrophobia was playing up, but Tyson’s great attitude kept it all in perspective, let me tell you. And that’s my point number two. I’ll tell them. “Nothing like a quadriplegic in the midst to keep things real.” The love and care shown by Enzo touched our hearts, and it got us wondering if we’d give up a high paid job to be a disability worker, like he did. I really believe now that we all have the capacity to help others. Enzo said it was the best job he’d ever had, and we didn’t doubt him for a second. – Excerpt from Dead People Don’t Make Jam, a collection of short stories by Sean Crawley. How did you come to work on Gnostic Corner? I guess it was synchronicity. It was 2016 I was doing my school’s Mother’s Day stall and needed some florist sundries. I contacted a rep and she was in Gnostic Bunch when she took the call. Mary had just said she needed a florist as someone had left that week. Have you always had a connection with flowers and plants? Always – I grew up on a flower farm. My father’s idea of school holidays was helping plant the new crop of carnations and after school I would pick Iris. My work ethic was embedded early. Dad is now in spirit and Mum still lives on the family farm – 55 years now. What is unique about working on Gnostic Corner? I’m allowed to have individuality and we create our flowers according to the messages the client are trying to convey. I also get to work with a great bunch of wonderful people! How long have you been a florist and how have you seen the industry change. It’s been 36 years (even though I’m only about 42) and I have noticed how the use of flowers has evolved. People are coming to realise that by having flowers and giving them it promotes wellbeing. In the moment when someone receives flowers as a gift, something magic happens and no other gift provokes that feeling. Words of wisdom for anyone thinking about Floristry? The rewards are not measured only in monetary ways. Working with flowers stimulates all your senses – the colours and scents are inspiring.
