Ashley Fiona’s distinctive handmade jewellery and home wares are adored around the coast. She spoke with us about her Ashkeepers, unique pieces created to keep a tactile connection with loved ones.
“M
y mother was only 44 when she died suddenly leaving behind my father and three teenage daughters. I was the youngest and for many years felt very alone. No one we knew had been through the same experience. We struggled with how we should remember someone so immensely important to us.
I was only 13 when my mother died and I still remember the plastic container that held her ashes for so many months. It was unsightly and unrefined – everything she wasn’t. 12 years later, post ceramic studies, my beautiful grandfather died. My Nan was saddened that his ashes were contained in such an ugly box. I thought ‘I can create something so she would always have a beautiful vessel for her beloved.’ I created the very first porcelain Ashkeeper for my dear grandfather. My Nan still has his ashes and when she dies, she wants them to be scattered together – eternal love. The Ashkeeper concept came about because I wanted to create an urn or vessel that instead brings life to the sadness of death and encourages us to cherish positive memories forever. Talking about death helps to ease the pain of loss. G

PHOTO: LISA HAYMES
The Ashkeepers are high fired porcelain and are intentionally spherical as the sphere is a familiar, immediately relatable form and is connected to the cycle of life: birth, death and rebirth. The surface designs are handpainted and inspired by mandalas. The intricate pattern evolves organically as I hand paint directly on the surface of the Ashkeeper. Creating such personal and meaningful pieces is a very meditative process where each one is unique. An outcome of my own personal healing, an Ashkeeper is designed to do just that. The Ashkeepers are my souls purpose – it’s my heart work. They are artworks to be interacted with. Once inverted, the lid creates a special candle holder for times of remembrance. An important note is that the Ashkeepers don’t have to contain ashes – I don’t have any of my mother’s ashes. I use mine for keepsakes that I hold tenderly when I want to feel a deeper connection. We need to talk about death, it’s the one thing we are all destined to experience. I honestly believe ‘you’ve got to feel it to heal it.’ We’ve forgotten our traditional death customs. Families no longer wear black when they’ve experienced a recent death. There’s no outward
sign to the public that perhaps you need to be more gentle around the family. Last year I participated in Deathwalker Training with Zenith Virago. We learned a whole spectrum of death; what to expect and how to journey with the dying – from illness to sudden death to ceremony and loss. I find it incredibly fascinating and I’m ready to discover more. I don’t believe death is the end. My Nan’s grandmother used to say to her “We will all meet again, in a more beautiful place.” You can find Ashley Fiona’s jewellery at Gnostic Rocks. See more at www.ashleyfiona.com

SEASONS FOR GROWTH®
The art of parenting One breath at a time
B
esides the intensity of childbirth, parenting a child is quite possibly the hardest job you can choose to do. It requires awareness, patience, compassion, understanding, and an equal serving of firm but fair. Sometimes we forget all these things when we are disconnected from our bodies and our breath. The effect of this is a disconnection from our child’s needs in that moment. Through yoga, we realise that we always have choice to react in anger or respond with patience. And this isn’t always easy. But the best lessons in life are often the most challenging ones. We can practice breath awareness when we are stressed to bring us back to centre and back to each moment. Being an observer to our breath, our body and our mind’s chatter, can help us to remain present for moments at a time. When we notice our behaviour before

ORGANICS Did you know that one non organic apple can have around 55 chemical residues found on it?
WHY CHOOSE ORGANIC? By Kerry Caudwell
T
he question I ask is why wouldn’t you choose organic? Some people say to me ‘why would you pay that much for organic food? It doesn’t taste any better, it doesn’t look any better, and there is no evidence that it is better for your health…’ Firstly it does taste better – it might not be sparkly clean but I know it’s natural and not human enhanced. As for the expensive part I believe there is no price on good health, as ‘good health is our most important asset’. Lastly, there might not be a double-blindplacebo controlled trial done on the risks versus the non-risks of eating organic but for me its evident alone with cancer rates going from 1 in 11 to now being 1 in 2 (Latest Australian statistics). This increase was within around 9 years – that’s a dramatic jump! Also within my own clinical experience the amount of endocrine imbalances and toxicities that people are presenting with is all the evidence I need. Now I know it’s not just about the food – it’s about the water, our environment and other factors. But I also know that prevention is always better than trying to treat a disease whether that is cancer, metabolic issues, autoimmune, cardiovascular and any other disease.
Most of our food is fertilized, chemically sprayed with herbicides, fungicides and pesticides to protect them from weeds, pests and fungus. Organic food means avoiding that chemical residue left on foods. It means we are eating less toxins and more how nature intended. It also means we are supporting workers and farm neighbors by reducing their exposure to potentially harmful concentrated chemicals, less fossil fuel converted into fertilizers, means healthier soils and more sustainable crops and a more ethical way of living. Did you know that one non organic apple has around 55 chemical residues found on it, we know that 1 to 8 of those chemicals are known or probable carcinogens and 12 are known hormone disruptors. These may be the possible reasons why eating non-organic food could cause severe health issues. The human body is made from organic vitamins and minerals NOT from synthetic chemicals. Xenoestrogens, one of the more troubling types of endocrine disruptors, mimic estrogen and attach to the body’s estrogen-receptor sites, in both women and men. These xenoestrogens interfere with hormonal signalling and are believed to cause an increased risk of breast, prostate, and reproductive cancers; reduced fertility; early puberty in children; menstrual irregularities; endometriosis; and other disorders. While healthy levels of estrogen in the body are key in supporting a number of normal physiological functions, an excessive amount of estrogen (specifically, high levels of “bad” estrogen) lead to hormonal imbalances with detrimental effects on reproductive health. Where are Xenoestrogens found? In many of the chemical pesticides, herbicides and fungicides used on our food. For these reasons alone I would urge you to choose organic. New on the Corner Founders of Constant Craving Cakes Julie and Russell have bought Gnostic Mini Mana and are busy creating their new shop on the Corner.
“We have supplied Gnostic Mana Café with cakes for many years – we share the same business and personal ethics,” says Julie. “We like to create jobs and teach our staff to achieve their best while they are with us and aspire to do more when they move on to further their careers. Russell had the idea of opening a small takeaway to sell cakes and pies. We had been looking at different areas of the Central Coast when we received a call from Biddy asking if we were interested in buying Gnostic Mini Mana. I jokingly tell people Biddy asked us if we wanted to buy the Mini and we said “Yeah, sure.” It was a little more complicated than that, but basically that’s what happened. We’ve always loved this little shop. The original Simpson’s bakery was an iconic Woy Woy

landmark. People still have memories of buying their family birthday cakes there. It is one of the few shops that has its original front window and door, so we have chosen to go with a retro theme which celebrates the immediate area and architecture of the building. The shop is being repainted with our new logo ‘Coffee Pie & Cake’. We are keeping Gnostic Coffee – Caleb is to be congratulated for his hard work in developing such a quality bean. We have introduced our pies and cakes which people are enjoying. I’m very excited to be developing new products which is one of my favourite things to do.”
Frida Be Me M
ore than likely you have seen her wellbrowed face before. Frida Kahlo has become a Guevera-esque poster child for Mexico and feminism. Her face adorns many a product in the oh-so-addictively bright Mexican homewares department... but do you know her story? I was a catholic school girl when I discovered her. Up to that point my mind had been sheltered by a culturally monotone hometown. Frida Kahlo de Riveras’ story struck me like a bolt of lightning. I poured over a reproduction of her diary, resplendent with swirled writing in an unfamiliar tongue, alternating scrawled faces and angels and a name repeated..... Diego, Diego, Diego.... Who was this woman? At that time my life had started to unfurl into increasingly queer, artistic, political, socialist circles and Frida ticked all the boxes. Traditional yet revolutionary, feminine and strong, expressive yet tortured, political though delicate. Learning about the life of Frida Kahlo was an introduction into suffering, self expression, love and art. My angst-y teenaged self revelled in the complexities and tragedy of her story but also in the rich culture of her birth country. There was WAR Kahlo was born into the world during the violent Revolución Mexicana of 1910. There was PAIN During her life Kahlo suffered a great many surgeries to remedy both her childhood polio and the near fatal accident she had at age 18 which broke, fractured and pierced her young body into infertility and disfigurement. There was CULTURE Alive at a great time of change and influence, Kahlo moved in influential circles of art and politics and was known for her proud and voracious love of her country’s tradition and history. There was SEX Kahlo married post revolutionary artist, Diego Rivera. Their love affair of 25 years was passionate, tumultuous and dotted by affairs with men and women. There was ART In a response to her bed-bound time Kahlo began to paint what she knew best, herself. Her
“I used to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me, too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it’s true I’m here, and I’m just as strange as you.” – Frida Kahlo style was unique to the time in its raw honesty and Diego was once quoted as saying “(her work) exalted the feminine qualities of endurance of truth, reality, cruelty, and suffering. Never before had a woman put such agonized poetry on canvas as Frida did at this time.” My young self devoured the raw honesty of the story and painting upon painting of a woman hurt, scorned, thinking, feeling, exposed. To “know thyself” is the greatest maximum one can hold and Kahlo was on the hunt. To this day I still hold Frida both as a woman and as an artist in high, but somewhat now, more considered regard. Knowledge of her life held and guided me through my blossoming and awkward years and has inspired not only a disregard for convention but also for that of excessive brow grooming. Emily hangs out at Gnostic Village Wear and often impersonates Frida badly. G

Because our life experiences influence the way we look at the world each day, we are bound to see things from different angles. In most cases we view our own behaviour as normal and everyone else’s is a variation on that. It gets really hard at times to understand some people’s point of view, certainly their behaviour – even their ethics. nosis is the experience of knowing. The word comes from ancient Greece, where to have gnosis about anything meant you had to have personal experience. Forget what the tabloids tell you – in ancient Greece it was the tablets. And the things the guy at the Parthenon told you were just his ideas. You don’t know any of it because you haven’t witnessed it. So switch on your own watcher and explore your life, being aware of your own experience. Ask yourself the question “What do I really know?” You may be surprised how many of the things that motivate your behaviour are based on opinions rather than gnosis. – MH

In the interests of sharing knowledge learned through experience (Gnosis) we interview people from all beliefs to share insights from their path. May we all learn and grow together in peace.
Tom Ledder
Selenite Sword Maker Your name and title, and mission in life? Tom Ledder, Owner & Creator of Selenite Sword Maker LLC. My mission in life is to produce the most powerful transformative energy tools to assist light workers with their work no matter what their modality may be. The wonderful thing about the Selenite swords of light is they make the unseen light and energy become seen and felt on a tangible level. The Spiritual belief you follow? I believe we are light, sound and vibration. I believe in a Higher source, and that we can connect to our true nature with meditation.
What lead you to this belief system? My belief system, grown by many years of TM meditation, is based on the concept that each of us is made of light and energy. This is our fundamental nature. I began to study crystals in 2003 and got very interested in Lemurian crystals which eventually led me to discover the great power and wonderful properties of Selenite. As I worked with creating the first swords of light I realised that Selenite crystal had immense capability to clear any type of energetic issues, open chakras, clear meridians and even bring in higher beings of Light, Angels, Archangels and Ascended Masters. Can you share a little about the Crystal Selenite Swords? The Selenite swords of light that I make have been evolving over the years, and have become more potent with each version of the sword of light. As I travel around the world training people on how to use these tools of light I have the opportunity to pick up the powerful ener-
gies of sacred sites in Japan, Australia Canada and South America, primarily Peru. The current swords of light that I am making are called Peruvian sun swords as they bring in the powerful energy of light and energy. Some Swords work powerfully with the earth and Gaia. Some swords work with the cosmos others are good at clearing particular blocks within our nervous system.
The personal benefits you have gained from your beliefs? As I worked with the Selenite and started to make the Selenite swords of light what I gained from this was the opportunity as an occupation to be continually working with energy with light. I use the swords of light every day on my own personal energy fields, that being; the physical body, the subtle bodies, the chakras, the meridians and the quantum field around our bodies. In addition the swords of light assist in conditioning not only your energy field but your home and land that you work with.
What challenges you with your beliefs in the modern world? One challenge is a lack of education about our energetic bodies, subtle bodies, chakras, and that what we think and say is energy and has an affect on ourselves and the planet. My feeling is that in assisting the light workers in every counG

SOULSPEAK try that I go to, I am contributing to an increase in the light quotient of the planet. The concept I believe is that as we raise the overall frequency of our own individual cells then we can transfer some of that into the general population and we can become more powerful and are transformational healers. The Selenite swords of light that I make is they will assist any individual to be clear have a higher frequency and be more powerful in whatever their healing modality or personal program for evolution may be.
What practice do you have in daily life? My daily practice is to do a sitting meditation going into the light, experiencing the subtle or levels of thought and working with the Selenite swords to enhance my energy and frequency. This practice has allowed me to see the power that the Selenite swords of light have on humanity. I have also found that working with the swords of light to clear energies in my house and the land around my house has produced a powerful conditioning of the space where the field of all possibilities is more active and available. What is your personal belief on the purpose of this life? All of us are here for a reason. I feel my purpose is to make the Selenite swords of light and to train the light workers of this planet how to use them. In order to make large transformational changes in society we as light workers need to be more powerful, more effective and clear in our own energies. So my objective and goal

is to help transform the planet by getting the Selenite swords of light into hands of the light worker’s that can make a difference. What spiritual leaders inspire you and how has that influenced your life. I have had the opportunity to work with several powerful spiritual leaders in the last 35 years. In 2003 I met a spiritual teacher/guru named Sai Maa and studied with her for six years. She became interested in the swords I had made and implemented them in her personal healing sessions that were done at all of her programs. This provided an opportunity for the swords of light that I was making to move around the world. I will be coming to Australia for my third tour in September. I will be conducting workshops in the Sunshine coast, Sydney area, Blue Mountains and then on to the conscious life Expo and then a final workshop in the Sunshine Coast of Australia. My feeling is that the light workers in Australia will assist in tackling the big issues in the world and help raise the vibrational light frequency of the planet. With all the perceived problems in the world today the answers lie in bringing more light into the planet, clearing the negative energy of the people and the land so that we can live in a world that is filled with light and beings pursuing their highest purpose. Learn more about Tom Ledder and the Crystal Swords of Light at www.seleniteswords.com. Melissa and Bruce have turned their passion for Kombis into a boutique hire business on the Central Coast. “Bruce does most of the restoration work himself and I handle the promotion, bookings and driving,” says Melissa. “We have 3 Kombis – Lilly, Lucy and Lois – all finished in the same orange and white colour scheme so they photograph beautifully when paired together.
We also have Lotty joining our fleet in 2016 after her restoration is completed. She is a 1967 Split Windscreen and will be another all white beauty. So now Kombi Lucy will finally have an identical twin sister! We found that no other company has white Kombis on offer for weddings. People just love these vans – it seems like everyone has a Kombi story!” Kombi Event Hire service the Central Coast, Newcastle, Hunter Valley and Northern Beaches. Feng Shui for the Southern Hemisphere
F
eng Shui is the ancient Chinese art and science of ensuring harmony within our living environment. It comes down to work with the Life force or Chi energy. Not against it. To be in flow with Mother Nature is a wonderful gift and it is there for each of us. From building the freeways, to building our homes right down to the veggie garden in the back yard. There are many schools of Feng Shui. Form school is the most common. It is placing different cures in each section of the building. It is working with the elements to get the energy moving to better our lives. Feng Shui helps us with wealth, relationships, creativity, helpful people, our careers, knowledge and family and Health. Some people think it is complicated to use Feng Shui. For example if you need water, you don’t have to paint the wall or place a water fountain. It can be as simple as hanging a blue ribbon in that area. The bottom line of Feng Shui is to be happy in your surrounds. Here are a few Feng Shui tips to get you started: u Don’t place a mirror opposite your front door, it will send the good things straight back out u Have a small boat or picture of a boat in the
entry to your home, the boat faces into the house as it brings you and your family the harvest of life
u Don’t wear shoes in the house. We have been
out walking in other’s footsteps all day and don’t want to bring their problems in to the home
u If you are looking for work, place an open fan
above the inside of the front door. It opens you up to more opportunities
u The money Frog sits inside the front door and
faces into the home or work place
u If your front door and back door are in line
with each other, you will need to hang a chime inside the back door. Or everything will just rush through your life.
Remember that these suggestions are only a part of Feng Shui. More Feng Shui cures can be found in my book, Problem Solved, which is available at Gnostic Forest. June Turner is a Qualified Licensed Builder and Interior Designer. She is trained in both Northern and Southern Hemisphere Feng Shui. June offers Feng Shui styled readings at Gnostic Forest. G

WISEGUYS One day a student worked up the courage to ask the Zen master, “What is it like to be enlightened?” Without acknowledging or rejecting the seeker’s question, the master remained silent. After some time, the teacher spoke: “I eat when I’m hungry. I sleep when I’m tired.” The student asked, “Well, isn’t that what everyone does?” The master, surprised, responded with a hint of a smile on his lips. “Oh, you think so? When others eat, they think of thousands of things and their minds endlessly run from one thing to another. When others sleep, they dream of thousands of things and their minds create endless fantasies and dramas.” The master closed the eyes, paused for a time, and then continued. “When I eat, I just eat. When I sleep, I just sleep. . . It’s far too simple, I know.”
AUTHENTICITY…
C
hill out. Live it up! Be Still. Carpe Diem. YOLO. Opportunity knocks. Blah blah blah… The noise of fulfilment often drowns out the still small voice inside. Most, if not all, of my deepest growth has happened by following someone else’s advice/ ideas/assumptions and trying to work my way out of inauthentic interactions and situations thusly created. We are often so busy trying to work out what the other guy is doing that we are failing to turn within and act upon our own inherent knowing. That knowing of what is good and right for us. Authenticity has a way of weeding out those who do not love and respect you and replacing
them with people who know and accept you for who you are… ‘cause you’re being it. Being. To know who you are, what makes you happy and what you wish to create is your life’s biggest calling and no one else can do it for you. You might have to hang with yourself for a while.

TRAVEL: THE NETHERLANDS I long, as does every human being, to be at home wherever I find myself.” – Maya Angelou
‘I
’ve never done this before, but I like you,’ she said, handing me her number. It was a Saturday afternoon in the middle of European summer, and we had just gotten off a train from Amsterdam. Now we were sitting on the bus, letting it take us even further from that human jungle gym, bicycle infested craziness. Having spent seven hours of that day crammed into a tiny hatchback with four non-English speaking Frenchies, I was just giddy with relief that so many Dutch people spoke fluent English! We’d had a while to wait for our bus, so this woman and I had started chatting. She’d just gotten back from a wedding in the city, and told me how the church was packed with young people. ‘I have some time free on Monday, call me and I can show you some things...’ Turning up at my accommodation, I discovered that my host had planned a spontaneous trip to Germany, and I now had the whole place to myself. I spent the first day wandering the small city by myself, revelling in the space. But I kept that card with her number on it... Why not say ‘Yes’? On the second morning, I rang her. ‘Hi, it’s Gabriella... The girl from the bus.’ I said. ‘Oh! I was hoping you’d call!’ said she ‘Shall I come and pick you up?’ ‘Yes.’ And I gave her my address. About thirty minutes later, I was picked up by this spritely seventy-year-old who was fluent not only in English and Dutch, but also Spanish from her years of missionary work in South America. With this skill up her sleeve, she started a church for Amsterdam’s influx of Spanish speaking prostitutes, and somewhere in there also spent years working in prisons running music and drama programs for inmates. She took me to see a real, working traditional Dutch windmill, the famous finger of land that separates the ‘salt water’ from the ‘sweet, and the Dutch seaside. She insisted on buying me lunch and we talked about everything from the human need for connection, to sustainable
energy, to why Dutchies are so obsessed with salty licorice! And neither of us had done that before. I’d certainly never discovered a second grandmother on a bus, and she’d never offered to show a random girl with an Aussie twang around. It felt a little kooky, but we both said ‘Yes’ to it, and we were glad we did. It was a sweet, comfortable connection born out of mutual openness. And, for those few hours, I stopped feeling like a stranger in a foreign land, and I just felt at home. Home in humanity, home in the knowing and experience that I am cared about and looked out for, wherever I am. And, on that day, Love sent me that reminder in the form of a trilingual, septuagenarian Dutch lady who was willing to follow her inner ‘Yes’ and invite me in to her world. Amen. RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW
T
here is nothing you have to do, no-where you need to be. Life right now is providing you with the perfect tools to experience and express the divine which lives within. Many look at what lies before them as obstacles and roadblocks to their happiness and therefore are forever trying to escape the present moment, with the belief that somewhere over my obstacles and on the other side of these roadblocks my happiness resides. What rests before you right now is the key to your happiness, life is presenting you with exactly what you need to experience and express who you truly are. Once you begin to live your life from this place of no resistance and see all moments placed before you, for you. Your life will change instantly.
You’ll begin to see life as the most precious gift of all. It’s as though an orchestra is playing with you, for you, it’s a truly magical experience and is our natural state of being. Your story will tell you that you’re a victim that life is unfair and that life’s against you. This is your story, beneath the story is your orchestra, ready to play with you for you, right now. Your orchestra plays the most beautiful of songs, melodies that flow in sync with life, rhythms and harmonies full of Joy, Happiness, Wisdom, Compassion, Truth, Love and light. This my friends is who you truly are, you are those beautiful rhythms with the stunning harmonies it’s just you’ve forgot. Your true sound has been lost in the jungle of your story, dominated by the past and the future, lost in the midst of the obstacles and roadblocks. Go forward now into life seeing all as an opportunity to play your grandest song yet, to BE and express who you truly are. I invite you now to step into life and let the essence of the divine flow through and around you, right here, right now. – Owen Maher teaches meditation at Gnostic Corner
