NEW HEALING Gnostic Corner is happy to welcome Alex Herget and Megan Clarke as the new owners of Gnostic Healing Centre. We wish them and the therapists every success here in Woy Woy as part of our community.
A
lex joins us with a background in social psychology and holistic health and has specialized in bioresonance therapy. This uses the concept of homoeopathy and electro-acupuncture. It accesses a measurement of the cells potential to understand the vitality and regenerating potential of the client, their ability to self- heal and restore their immune system. It looks at the root causes of the illness and re-balances the body. Megan began her nursing career in 1983 and has had a herbal consultation and nutrition practice for six years. She has a strong emphasis on prevention of ill-health and anti-aging, specializing in autoimmune conditions, women’s health and pre-conception care to enhance fertility and the health of your newborn.
With more and more people taking their health into their own hands with online research what do you think the benefits are of one on one consultation? Alex: It’s great that people take an interest in their own health. We encourage that as we like to educate. Often when researching you will come up with contradicting statements and it is up to us as practitioners to come up with an individualized therapy that is both
safe and effective. We also only source our herbs and supplements from trusted TGA approved sources, so clients can be assured of quality of products, which in the online world is often not transparent. What are the most exciting developments in the health industry at the moment? Megan: It is really exciting to find more clients open to information and holistic medicine. We are becoming more specific in our treatment as we have an improved understanding of biochemical differences, receptor sites, the gut-brain connection, metabolism and epigenetic triggers of ill-health. We treat clients on an individualized basis and prioritize their treatment plans with up to date monitoring tools such as bioresonance and live blood analysis. What attracted you both to joining the Gnostic Corner? The sense of community and holistic life balance. The energy drew us both here early this year.
What do you feel are the key things to maintaining wellness? Good relationships – a sense of belonging, community and fun. Balance. Whole food, fresh air and good sleep!

YOGA
Yoga and Non Violence
A
t the time of writing there’s a collective sadness around the world due to recent acts of terrorism. I’m certainly feeling the grief personally and I can detect a level of sadness locally. As Yogis or people who want to live a harmonious life, what can we do? If you study the principles of right living and ethical rules for living in the Yoga Sutra, known as Yama and Niyama the principle of Ahimsa is documented. Ahimsa translates as non-violence, non-harming or not to injure. Like most Sanskrit words the meaning is much more complicated than the English translation suggests. Abstaining from violent acts is fairly easy to understand and achieve by the majority of thinking and caring humans but what about the difficulty in abstaining from violent words, even more difficult is abstaining from violent and negative self-talk! How often to do you criticise yourself? How often have you told yourself that you’re not good enough, too old, too fat, too skinny, too short? The list goes on. Do you practice ahimsa in your day to day life or even during yoga class? Are you physically or
No gimmicks @ Peninsula Yoga Move, Breathe, Focus, Relax
emotional abusive to yourself while you’re on the mat? Do you strain, do you over exert, have you physically injured yourself during a yoga class? What about the even more destructive self-talk, how often do you tell yourself you’re not as good as everyone self, not flexible enough, not strong enough, not mobile enough, tell yourself you’ll never achieve a certain shape? Yoga is not exercise, it’s non-competitive, you’re not being judged or tested, so why beat yourself up with self-abuse? Why not be kind to yourself, love yourself, feel better about yourself, be positive. Practice ahimsa at yoga, take it off the mat and influence the people around you. That’s something we can do to make our world a nicer place. It sounds like a monumental task to try and change the world through yoga but it’s all about ripples on the pond, start with self-love and spread the message. Act locally. SEASONS
NEMO SALaD
Spring Ritual According to Chinese medicine, this season is all about action, drive and new commencements. This is the perfect time to detox your body and spring clean your home and workplace. Support the physical and mental adaptability of this purifying and productive period by bathing, vaporising and having a lymphatic drainage massage using essential oils of rosemary, grapefruit, coriander, petitgrain, lemon and geranium. This recipe is from Rita Balshaw’s new book Hippies in the City – Urban Remedies available at Gnostic Forest.
You’ll need: • 100 grams firm tofu • 1 bunch of rocket • 1 bunch coriander • 1 Lebanese cucumber • 1 red onion • 8 marinated green olives • 2 boiled eggs
• • • • • • •
2 T biodynamic ricotta* 2 fresh limes 3 T tamari soy sauce 1 T coconut oil 1 t sea salt flakes 1 t cracked black pepper 1 t paprika
Add a little coconut oil, lime juice, tamari soy, salt and pepper to a fry pan. Pan fry the tofu at a medium heat for 5 minutes. Take a lovely salad bowl and add in the rocket, sliced eggs, tofu pieces, finely chopped up cucumber, coriander and onion. Garnish with sliced green olives, chunks of ricotta, salt, pepper and a dusting of sweet paprika. This meal is best served in a big deep ceramic serving bowl and placed on a table and enjoyed in the sunshine. It makes for a great Saturday lunch addition, accompanied by freshly baked sourdough bread and a jug of cucumber, lime and coriander infused mineral water. *Feel free to use organic ricotta, goats and sheep’s cheese instead. LOVE
relationship RESET Relationship coach and and best selling author Marina J chats with us about her work.
Relationship issues can get messy – where do you begin? I start by looking at the relationship you have with yourself. It’s not about what he did or what she did. It’s about the relationship you’re having with yourself right now, which sets the tone for every relationship you’ll ever have. Heal yourself and your relationships will flourish. I believe we are all built to heal one hundred percent! I’m not for everybody. When I first meet a client I’ll know If I’m right for them, and if they’re right for me! You might have noticed that my website is very pink! I predominantly coach women, but I do see a couple of men a week. Is it difficult to get people to open up? I had a client say to me “My wife wants me here - I’m prepared to do the work.” I said to him “But don’t you already have a full time job – do you really want another one?” This shouldn’t be work. Ultimately it should be fun. We laugh a lot. There’s crying too of course – but life can be crazy nuts, you know? People come to sessions however they’re feeling on the day and we use whatever has happened in their week to heal, so they love opening up! Why do people stay in bad relationships? Many people are surrounded by others doing the same thing. I call it ‘making- do-land’. If all your friends are in the same boat, that kind of makes it seem okay. You’ll complain about it, feel unappreciated, have a low level of anger towards each other but nothing will change. G
10
What makes a great relationship? You learning how to receive from him and him learning what makes you happy. A bad relationship is you doing everything, and him not knowing what you really need today. Women are magnificent. We are moving the world at the moment, as the Dalai Lama has said. In order to do that we need to receive the support to fuel us. If we are nurturing everyone else we get depleted. Everyone has masculine and feminine. We’ve had thousands of years of masculine energy driving this planet. We need to lift up the feminine energy in both women and men. The softer you are, the closer you get. The harder you are, the further away you get from each other. What goes wrong? When you first meet someone you show them your best clothes, your humour and skills. After a while, of course, your darker stuff comes up and it can be a shock. It’s important to make
friends with your negative, dark side. Then it has no power over you. As soon as you heal it your beautiful partner doesn’t need to show it to you anymore. Our purpose is to evolve in this lifetime. People are brought to us to help do that. And once we heal? They’ll lift up with us, or drop away. Women will tell me that their partner doesn’t listen to them. But I say “Where are you not listening to yourself in your life?” You show him how to treat you by the way you just treated yourself today. If you have low self-love compliments will bounce clean off. How do people know it is time to move on? My job is to get someone happy, together or apart. When you can look yourself, your partner and your children in the eye and know you gave
it your best shot. People either add to you or take away. Are they adding to you right now, or taking away?
What is the best thing about what you do? Watching people create a life that turns them on – because your happiness is everything!

Tiger Singleton (AKA Tigmonk)
Tell us a little about your life’s beginnings? I was raised in a conceptually christian environment that almost had me convinced I was destined to burn in hell for all of eternity. Common was the experience of feeling loved, then despised, and then cursed in my humanness; a humanness that somehow was unable to match the social expectation of what it meant to fully be loveable. Naturally, in my teens I painfully failed at most things I tried, fighting my own sincerity, my own naturalness. After dropping out of high school, I ran full speed with my eyes closed into a world that seemed determined to keep me separate from what I desired. I looked in all the dark corners of experience, becoming a drug addict, being homeless, and completely losing myself as I tried to be something I wasn’t. By the age of 21, my life was a mess of unmanageable chaos. While living in my car, I asked a question that I never asked before; that was, “what if it’s not their fault?” This led to an internal recognition that regardless of what I thought about it, I was responsible for my current circumstance. My life seemed plagued by internal resistance. I felt like I running from something, but didn’t know what. At age 23, I collapsed into a paralysing depression. The kind that decided that I would loose the capacity to function as a human being. I couldn’t move. This, was the beginning of the Life I now see as indescribably beautiful, infinitely loveable, and tearfully joyful. Your beliefs? You asked me how I came to my beliefs, and quite sincerely, I laugh gently with a smile. You see, what I saw, was the end of all my beliefs. As I laid there in my bed, crippled into stillness, I was absolutely exhausted with fighting the experi-
ence of how I was feeling. I simply had no fight left. I surrendered. “You win,” I said. In the absence of my fight, I noticed the energy of what I called depression, transformed. I became the observer of it, rather than the one determined to fight it or get rid of it. I noticed profoundly that the problem was not the energy I felt, the problem was that I was trying to get away from it, trying to run from it. That’s what hurt. I saw the insanity of my own mind, believing all sorts of thoughts about who I was, who I wasn’t, and who I was supposed to be, all the while as I laid there in the reality of now, none of it was true. I saw that this moment didn’t need me to believe anything in order for life to be life. I just let go, for that moment, of everything I believed and became open to life being as it is. My beliefs collapsed. Everything I believed didn’t seem to have anything to do with life, they just held onto limiting ideas and perspectives. How has this shaped today? I let go, and let life be the miracle it already was, is, and always will be. I’ve noticed time and time again, that everything I worried about, was G
13
a lesson that showed me I didn’t need to worry. There was a magic that was happening, a magic that showed me I was taken care of. The only thing that argued with this, was me hanging onto an idea, or belief, that somehow said I knew life was getting it wrong. Again, only to show me, that life knew what it was doing all along, and was constantly inviting me to trust the process. So today, I trust Life. I trust that the seasons change right on schedule. I trust that all I can lose in this life, is what I am not; therefore I can let go and be what I am right now. What I am right now, is a lover of this miracle we are swimming in. A lover of truth, beyond the mind. Time and time again, as I sit with people all around the world, I see very clearly that we are all playing the same game. The game of Self Discovery, answering the age old question of… “Who am I?”
Spiritual Challenges? For me, the challenge is to continue doing what I love, even though society and my past conditioning, wants to say I should not for the sake of protecting my fears of what others might think. Permission to be naturally expressive in our gifts, talents, passions, and interests.
Spiritual Practice? I’ve never been a very disciplined person. My desire for discipline was to reach a version of myself that I saw as more complete, which means I saw myself as less than whole in that moment. As I let go of limiting thoughts, beliefs, and ideas, I naturally returned home to the internal state of being I craved. The answer wasn’t in getting what I want, the answer was in the truth of right now. Life itself, was the perfect playground for this to be discovered. A major element of the practice, is allowing myself to do what I love. The past 9 years of opening my heart and sharing, has been the greatest gift I ever allowed to myself. This gift of course, was permission to be what I am. Whether in 5 day retreats, or 5 minutes, I love seeing love in others. We are all so amazing; right here, right now, always and forever. What we are, is a miracle beyond description.

Feng Shui
Family Harmony T he most important thing to most of us is our families. But every family has its times of stress and problems. Following are some Feng Shui cures we can put into place to bring peace and harmony to our home and Family. The main thing that we must do each and every day is to cook at least one meal a day and eat at the table as a family. This keeps us together as a unit. Always sit in the same position at the table. Have matching plates, chairs etc. By doing this it keeps us all equal. Have a picture of a bridge in the dining room or place a small bridge on the table at meals times – this bridges the gaps between us. Place a family photo half way along the right hand wall in the lounge room or living area. This is the family section of the home. If there is a problem among family members you can do this cure one of two ways it is up to
you. Take a photo of each person and on the back of photo “A” glue one end of a red ribbon and the other end to photo “B” OR in a family photo take the ribbon from one person to the next until the ribbon is touching every one. This ties the family back together. By using the above cure, the family members don’t have to see it. No one will know, it is a silent, unseen cure. This cuts back on stepping on toes, so to speak. If it is the children not getting along with each other, we tie one end of the ribbon to chair “A” and the other end to chair “B”. This works well – the children have a laugh about it and see how important it is to the rest of the family that everyone is getting along. June Turner ‘s book Problem Solved – Solving your Problems with Feng Shui is available at Gnostic Forest.

ZENPATH
T
raipsing across my lawn in the dark of night is a fret-filled exercise for me. I have, under foot, crushed many a snail just wishing to find a new patch for dinner. My stomach churns and I feel deep regret and sadness for injuring or maiming something so vulnerable. Try as I might though, I cannot turn back and look at my crime. The sight of a crushed being that was once - or perhaps is still is - clinging to life is too much for me to bear. The suffering rattles me and my personal vow of Ahimsa (non-violence). Once there was a monk who was deeply dedicated to the Buddhist precepts, and he kept to them all his life. One night, as he was walking, he stepped on something. It made a gut wrenching squishing sound, and he imagined he had stepped on an egg-bearing frog. This caused him no end of alarm and regret, in view of the Buddhist precept against taking life, and when he was finally able to sleep that night he had nightmares that hundreds of frogs came demanding his life. The monk awoke in the morning terribly upset. As he returned the next day to the fateful site he found that what he stepped on was an overripe eggplant. In that moment his feeling of uncertainty suddenly stopped, and for the first time he realised the meaning of the saying that “there is no objective world.” Then he finally knew how to practice Zen.
Can we ever truly have an objective view? Perhaps though, in my unwillingness to even look, I am causing more suffering – to myself. I wonder how many of the snails have been leaves or twigs or seed pods from the trees. Perhaps I am only half as “violent” as I had thought? At the very least I could excuse myself from the guilt and instead work on being more mindful in my foot falls – or invest in a torch. Emily runs a few of the Gnostic shops with her mum and is seeking a torch to shine a light on her catholic guilt.

FACEVALUE
Tell us some of your values and how society supports or challenges them? We are all challenged and questioned about what we want to be and do and what makes us feel comfortable. Some employers won’t give you a chance because you don’t look like everyone else, though you may be the best suited for the job. People can judge from old stereotypes and choose not to get to know you. But if they take that step and talk to me they get a shock cause I’m polite. I’m nothing like what they may have thought. I’m glad I’ve shocked them cause then maybe they will read a book with no cover.
What motivated you to modify your appearance? I saw family members and friends who were older then me getting tattoos. I got my first couple and saw that piercings kinda went hand
in hand. I started getting both and realised I got enjoyment from being able to wear art. Wearing a design that was created for me and also adding to that some of my personality and what makes me me – that is an art in itself. For an artist to capture a little bit of that person into what they have created for the wearer is amazing. I will always take my hat of to artists out there that do it day after day. As for the modifications, implants and piercing, well I’ve always had a fascination with the way it’s done. It is a creative art form. People ask me about it and then they see that people such as myself are really just an open book wanting to share our experiences. Has this become a passion or an addiction? Well I can’t talk for everyone. Some people may say that it’s an addiction, others may say it’s a passion or a way of life but that would be all up to the individual person . Mods – from tattoos, piercings, implants, scarification and more – and art expression isn’t just a small thing. Modification has such a huge scale, from clothes to make up, fitness, piercings, tattoos or hair colours and cuts and so much more. Some people use these and other mods as a confidence thing or in their eyes completing what they need to do or be in this life or they want something different to stand out or not stand out or just to make them happy that day, week or for life. To me these mods and art have become part of me as I have been like this for a long time now and wouldn’t change – well maybe a few more mods to come… Anything else you want to add? For anyone out there that has a curiosity about piercings or tattoos or any other mods always feel free to talk to people who have them. Ask questions about the ups and downs or who they recommend. Do your research and find the right artist that suits the artwork you’re after. That way you’ll have the best experience when getting your little piece or big piece of art or mod. Also I really love Lego! Doug has been a piercer for quite a few years and enjoys many different styles and arts. He’s easy going – a bit of a nerd – and enjoys nature. G

WORLD: Sri Lanka Galle (Sinhala) in the southwestern tip of Sri Lanka
My family responsibilities have loosened their hold on me in the last few years, and now I get the opportunity to wander off from time to time… – M.H.
The public commuter type bus on the way home was a 2 hour weather experience. Gnostic Travel had thoughtfully supplied rain ponchos when we discovered our trip ran into the wet season. Not anticipated was the need to wear them This year’s wander saw a small group of inside the bus. It was raining almost as much unlikely travel buddies head off to Sri Lanka and on the inside as it was outside. There was lots of Southern India. My friend Michelle was easily laughter from us yet the Sri Lankans didn’t even convinced to come along. We travel well together seem to notice the rain. and manage to have lots of fun in the most We managed to catch the train to Kandy the unusual places. The invitation was extended and day after we arrived at the station. The 1st day we before long two customers from Gnostic Forest rolled up at the Fort Railway Station as the train had signed up – they didn’t know each other pulled away. On closer inspection we discovered and hardly knew us either. This meant they were we were one day earlier than our tickets, which adventurous enough to be considered worthy! was also one day after our accommodation had We set off as winter approached in Australia expired. and the wet season approached in the Northern Quickly regrouping, we convinced ourselves Indian Ocean. Not the optimum time to visit it was good fortune as our tickets would still be these parts, but hey the tickets were a great price. valid on the next day. We now had an extra night It didn’t rain at all on our 1st day in Colombo in Colombo and managed to find a central hotel the capitol of Sri Lanka. The 2nd day we headed within sight of the train station. down to Gall, a beachy type old city on the south A couple of welcome drinks at the night club western tip of the Island. A remarkable place with next door and the excitement of the day was lots of ancientness to keep us busy all day. We replaced with some very 1970’s style dancing met people who had run for their lives when the those Sri Lankans have never seen anything like tsunami hit in 2004, experienced some of their 4 middle aged Australians doing the “missed the famous Tamil cooking and explored the old city train rain dance” until dark. G

And rain it did, we arrived in Kandy high up in the centre of the island shortly after a light lunch of popcorn on the train. Michelle purchased a bag from the refreshment wallah and preceded to try and open it, The young man with the large brown smiling eyes sitting opposite quietly said “gently miss” - Well Miss wasn’t listening in her excitement to open her dry lunch, and she managed to exploded the bag sharing popcorn with half the train carriage. Kandy was the original capitol dating back to 1592, surrounded by tea growing plantations. Today Kandy boasts the Temple of the Tooth Relic which was relocated to the city in the late 16th century by Konappu Bandara a convert to Buddhism who decided the tooth needed to be in the capitol. We had chosen to stay at Helga’s Folly, one of the most fascinating places not only in Sri Lanka but of all my travels so far. Helga has created a uniquely kitsch Sri Lankan hotel that has housed everyone from Ghandi to Paula Yates and Viviene Leigh, Peter Finch and Laurence Olivier. The Stereophonic’s 2003 album ‘You Gotta Go There to Come Back’ has a track named Madame Helga written after spending time at the Hotel. Although the Eagle’s Hotel California could just have easily been written about this place. Helga inherited the Hotel from her mother. Her father encouraged her to use the walls of the hotel as a canvas for healing after a series of ‘unfortunate and tragic events’ as described by newspaper clippings adorning the foyer. Intrigued by descriptions in the eccentric travel journals as a must-stay for Culture Vultures we had 2 nights to find out more. The size of the hotel was in contrast to the emptiness, only one other couple were staying the night we arrived. The place was haunting, with large murals lining the walls, always with a set of eyes focused on you. A small bat lived on the ceiling of the corridor outside our almost clean vintage room. The “welcome drinks” were served in an antique silver tea service as Frank Sinatra played softly in the background. The living rooms adorned with memorabilia and furniture from a time gone by. The invisible staff were always just quietly behind you when you needed something. warning us not to leave windows open. Mosquitoes were not the problem, monkeys were. G

Gnostic Travel at Helga’s Folly
Waking up early in the morning as the monkeys began tugging at the balcony doors trying to break and enter into our room was like waking up in someone else’s dream. As I swam in the deserted swimming pool surrounded by the jungle, I felt watched. We joined other guests for breakfast, only to discover one was a Sri Lankan married to an Australian and had been to Woy Woy and dined at Gnostic Mana Cafe! The food was amazing and towards the end of breakfast on the 2nd day Helga made a brief appearance. Meeting Helga was the icing to the experience, she has a softly spoken presence as mysterious as the Hotel. A truly charming gentle woman. Before we left we watched a black and white Dirk Bogarde film in her private movie theatre, with drinks served by the invisible waiter. With Temples of the Tooth and Kings Palaces it came as no surprise to discover that Harrison Ford’s 1984 film The Temple of Doom was filmed in Kandy. We did the tourist thing visiting a tea plantation and paid a visit to the spice farm - PAID being the important word as we were overcharged severely for Ayurvedic herbs that appeared at the market the day after for about 1/10 of the price. On local advice we left Kandy early and headed north to avoid the rain. About 20 miles from the city, and in bucketing rain we were turned back because of the flooded Ganga river. Our fearless group pushed on and managed to enjoy 12 days including an elephant safari, some ancient ruins in Anuradhapura, the Fish Markets and Holy Tour of Negombo City. Sri Lanka is a fascinating island and its people ever smiling regardless of the rain. Our Gnostic Tour headed on to Mumbai to continue the experience of the unknown…

Planetary Influences
for SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER & NOVEMBER 2016
EVENTS
Jennifer has been an Astrologer for 24 years (FAA Certificate) and is at Gnostic Forest on Fridays. Annular Lunar Eclipse*: New Moon... 1 Sept...Virgo... Annular Lunar Eclipse*: Full Moon... 16 Sept...Pisces...
*Annular Eclipse is a “total”eclipse but the moon is too far from the Earth for the apex of it’s shadow to reach the Earth’s surface. Therefore, the Moon will not entirely hide the Sun so a narrow ring of light will surround the dark new moon.
SEPTEMBER
OCTOBER
NOVEMBER
This is a bit of a mixed bag. You need to be aware of those that you bring into your life! Trust your instincts as your energy may be low through lack of sleep or health problems. Be careful of self-indulgement as this can be harmful to your body. On the other hand, it can be a very positive month for business success and self expansion. You are feeling philosophical and sympathetic towards those around you. Justice and emotional purification will help you to reach out to the community in a very caring and nurturing way.
Emotional adjustments are important with loved ones as you may be feeling anxious and out of control with unrealistic expectations. Eliminate obstacles to help you make the right choices. Although it may be frightening at the time it is needed.Forgive and let go of past emotions that are holding you back. This brings a feeling of optimism and confidence as you work towards your goals. World wide challenges may bring some disillusionment, but with sound judgement there canbe long term success. Sports, dance or music will lighten the load.
Letting go of something that is close to your heart will bring beneficial choices as you do feel emotionally tested at this time. Give loved ones the same amount of freedom that you choose for yourself, and have an open point of view. Avoid feeling self-righteous and intolerant, as this is not helpful at all to clear up any conflicts that surround you. Make proposed changes for the short or long term, that will bring balance into your life. If you are involved in any legal matters, make sure that it is strictly legitimate, or you may pay a hefty price, as these people may be quite shady.
