fter 10 years of dreaming, planning, meetings and worldwide fact-finding, the Narara Ecovillage (NEV) Co-operative was formed in 2012 with the aim to research, design and build a stylish, intergenerational, friendly demonstration ecovillage at Narara. NEV is founded on the three pillars of sustainable communities: ecological, economic and social. The community has 160 members from all walks of life and spanning several generations, making it one of Australia’s largest Ecovillages. Comprising 63 hectares of largely native forest, of which more than half is forested conservation areas, the former Gosford Horticultural Institute site is adjacent to the existing community of Narara on the outskirts of Gosford, one hour from Sydney. Narara Ecovillage is now in the birthing process after nearly five years of planning and application to the local Council. Designed for 400-500 people, the first 60 dwellings are about to begin. The vision is an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable world. Their mission is to create a sustainable eco village as a demonstration of this vision. The aim is to research, design and build a stylish, inter-generational, friendly demonstration ecovillage at Narara, blending the principles of ecological
and social sustainability, good health, business, caring and other options that may evolve for our wellbeing. One of the founding members told us more:
Narara Ecovillage is pretty normal in many ways, we’re looking for a village style development where we can: n live work and play together. Have a strong community focus, building our social infrastructure as well as our physical infrastructure and buildings. n reduce our ecological footprint by sharing facilities like tools, meeting rooms, offices, laundry, that avoids the need to duplicate in every house; n planning activities together like community gardens - a great way to be together, get healthy food and have fun; n incorporating commerce on site, reducing the commute for many of the residents to a walk or bike ride;

n developing education and visitor pro-
grammes to bring people to Narara to experience sustainable living first hand.
Narara is also unusual in some ways: n We’re a co-operative where we are the funders, developers, clients, decision makers and future residents. n We aim to be mixed use, so we’re not just a residential community, but also a thriving village with businesses and cottage industries, agriculture and food production next to conservation and wildlife preservation. Town planners hate this but it’s how traditional villages have always been! n We have a ‘Community Title’ where the members own and maintain all the infrastructure (not the local Council); n we have community owned utilities for water and electricity supply; n we use Permaculture - a system of agricultural and social design principles that use patterns found in nature. The is truly a project of vision. A better future for all where people can come together to live in a co-operative way to minimise the impact on the environment. At the same time maximising a strong sense of community. For more information on the Narara Ecovillage including monthly open days, talks and other events see our site: www.nararaecovillage.com

Beware the
Overwhelm Fairy Seven people talking over the sound of a blender. Screaming kids and stomping feet. The beep of a fridge door left open and ignored. a scratchy fabric across your skin. absolute silence. alone time.
S
tress is many a varied and shitty thing. We writhe in our skin, wanting to be anywhere else but with the discomfort. The triggers for it vary radically. Comforting situations for some may create overwhelm for others – even at the mere thought. There are some commonly shared stressors: family gatherings, crowded rooms and busy shopping centres win the most awards for the Achilles’ heel of annoyance. It is here, piled in with others who don’t know us (or those who know us a little too well) that overwhelm can occur. Add a dash of over-tired a sprinkling of expectation/obligation and a little seasonal stress and - voilà - Meltdown city. Our ability to cope in tension mode is worth working at. Last time I checked, I am not the general manager of the universe. And neither are you. Try these tips next time the Overwhelm Fairy comes to visit. Breathe The reason meditation is so damn good is that it condenses our mental and bodily processes back to focus on the one simple task: Breathing. In each minute there is a moment to pause and bring your awareness back to this simple task. With each out breath we release toxins and tension from our muscles. Researchers have found that levels of anxiety are relieved by oxygenating the brain. Steal away to a break room, bathroom, spare room and still yourself. Your moment to refocus on the stillness will feed you better than booze, junk food or another persons attention ever will. Simplify What can you reduce *for yourself* in this moment to relieve the feeling of overwhelm? Take off the scratchy clothing. Excuse yourself from the noisy room. Release the expectations on yourself. You’re
doing a great job. When we care for ourselves we show others what we like. They don’t have to guess and we respond better when calm. Its ok to say “No, thank you” – calmly, firmly, to anything that doesn’t give you peace. Do everyone a favour and don’t overcommit. Better to arrive calmly, on time with a small contribution than flailing and adding to the chaos. Watch your mind Play gently with you mind. A wise sign in Gnostic Forest once told me “Don’t believe everything you think”. I’ve since tested this in reality. It seems that a great deal of my suffering starts in a mind that thinks it knows how things *should* be. Watch what is. Watch how those around you handle it. When we are watching rather than anticipating we can respond rather than react. Boundaries Yes, we all have stuff to deal with. Let’s call it a poop sandwich. Those who surround us are carrying their own poop sandwich that they don’t want to eat either. Don’t let anyone try to feed you theirs. Don’t force yours on anyone. Maybe even put that sandwich down and walk away from it. Pressure is inevitable but not infinite. There are, at times, the need to endure it a little. Check in with yourself, give yourself credit and ensure you have healthy boundaries. To do this you need to know yourself. Moments of pause, self compassion and reflection to recharge will serve you. Both in understanding who you are and also how you best operate. You got this. Emily has worked amongst the self help books of Gnostic Corner for 2/3rds of her life. She’s got great theory and is still working on the practice part.

TRAVEL CUBA
C
uba is a country waking from over 50 years of slumber. The world has moved on while Cuba remained virtually frozen in a time lock. As the restriction of the US embargo are relaxed more tourists are finding a curious mix of what seems at first a dilapidated, underdeveloped country. With a closer look you discover a depth of unique culture, Rich in the arts and poor in technology. Most of the buildings need repair or at least a good coat of paint. Less than 10% of the 11 million people own cars. The streets of the Capital Havana have a mix of un-kept and also beautifully restored vintage cars. A one hour tour of the city can cost US$20 – what a doctor earns in 1 week. Castro-styled Socialism is strange from a western Capitalist point of view. To pretend to understand it after a very short visit would be a delusion! We sailed around the island in just 7 days visiting Havana and Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba. The cruise was a wonderful way to visit the major cities but we did not get to see the villages and the interior of this incredible island. What we did see was well organised, functional cities. Each citizen is entitled to free education, health care and a home provided by the government. Since the revolution lead by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara in 1959 Cuba has been separated from the world. The Americanenforced embargo and the Missile Crises of 1962 has seen Cuba held in a strange time warp. They received economic assistant from the USSR until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Since then financial pressures have necessitated economic reform to feed a population that’s major crop is sugar. Today over 80% of the population is employed by the state, who run all the main services and industries. They receive a rations booklet for monthly food allotments. It is common to see people lining up for their small basic handout. The people are happy. They proudly boast about little to no crime, no unemployment and no homelessness. Everyone is considered a member of the state and is taken care of equally.
G 14
Havana
Cuban education is ranked among the highest in world standards. Their major export is highly skilled doctors. The Cuban culture encourages equality and racial discrimination is not a problem as all religions are accepted. Cubans express themselves with music and dance theatre and poetry. Despite the fact that they are unable to excel financially and that there is no social ladder to climb, the people still seek to reach the peak in their own fields. Children are encouraged to explore the arts and the town squares have theaters, galleries and cultural centres available to everyone. You wont see graffiti or rubbish lining the streets. But you will see dilapidated buildings and because 4 litres of paint costs several weeks wages many buildings are in need of a coat of paint. To visit Cuba is an experience that leaves you wondering. Without doubt they will go through a period of rapid growth as their country opens up to the world. I hope that their beautiful culture remains and we all learn to dance like the Cubans. – MH

Setting clear intentions
o have a deliberate experience we need to actively create what we want from each event we get involved in. We need to pause, centre ourselves and define what it is we wish to experience. So here comes Christmas. We decide if we want to continue the tradition of Christmas being a religious event, or do we want to “modernise” things and just have a Happy Holiday. Then we need to decide how we want to celebrate. Is there going to be a party, a picnic or should we go out to an event organised by the community? These choices will all involve food, so what are we going to eat? Previous traditions would serve a big feast including all types of seasonal vegetables and a variety of meats. Many people these days see the benefit in eating plant based diets and are feeling the health benefits of reducing or removing meat products from their diet. So with intention we can create and continue the ways of celebrating that define our values in life. Others will make different choices and they are all valid. Then New Year appears while we are still digesting Christmas. Its time to set intentions on what we want for the next 12 months. What behaviours should we choose to leave behind, to throw out with the old calendar? By being mindful and deliberately considering our behaviours we are more likely to be satisfied with each and every experience. – M.H.

uddenly you’re taken out of your comfort zone and thrown into a world of madness, work parties, fighting crowds in shopping centres (unless you shop at Gnostic), catering for family feuds and financial burdens. Yoga has the ability to take you from chaos to calm with its encompassing array of practices to help you survive the holiday season!
Find your Calm A quick and efficient way to reduce stress is with a breathing practice (pranayama in Sanskrit) called alternate nostril breathing (nadi shodhana). Alternate nostril breathing activates the natural stress reduction mechanisms of both body and mind. This technique requires no special equipment, clothing or expertise. Here’s what to do: Find a quiet place that you can sit without being disturbed. Sit in a comfortable position, let your breath settle and calm down, take your right hand and place it in front of your face, place your thumb on the right side of your nose and your ring finger on the left side of your nose. Gently block off your right nostril with your thumb and breath into the left nostril and breath out through the right nostril, with your ring ginger block off your left nostril and breath into your right nostril, breath out through the left nostril. That’s one round, continue for 12 rounds. Help your Digestion Everyone over indulges in food at Christmas, it’s a festive time so naturally enough the intake of food and drink increases. Over eating and combining different types of food can make you feel bloated, sluggish and tired. Digestion is the centre of energy regulation in your body, the body also needs to assimilate the nutrients from your food and eliminate the waste. A few simple yoga asana (exercises) may help your digestive wellness over Christmas. Before eating, I recommend Cat/Cow pose and supine twists to stimulate your appetite and get those digestive juices flowing. Here’s what to do: Cat/Cow come on to your hands and knees, arms shoulder width and legs hip width. As you breath out draw your belly G

button towards your spine, move your chin towards your chest, round your back. As you breath in lower your chest, look forward and lift your tail bone towards the ceiling. Supine Twist, lay on your back and bend your knees, take your legs towards the floor on the right side and turn your head so that your face is looking left. Take your legs to the left side and look right! Creating a spinal twist. Exhale as you twist your lower body and inhale as you come back to centre. These two very simple moves will massage and stimulate the organs of the chest and abdomen and stoke up the digestive fire. Clear the Clog All that nice, rich and abundant food that you’ve eaten may clog up your system. Constipation, wind and bloating are never pleasant and are going to spoil your Christmas. Here’s a remedy, another yoga exercise known in Sanskrit as apanasana which translates as “wind release” Here’s what to do: Lay on your back face-up, bring your thighs to your chest and place your hands on your knees, as you breath out squeeze your things closer to your chest drawing your belly button towards your spine. Release on the inhale, that’s one round. Continue for 12 rounds. Have a safe and very Merry Christmas.

art@MANA
Gnostic Mana Cafe features monthly exhibitions from the Central Coast’s leading artists. FEBRUARY 2018: Natalie Ingram Hi, my name is Natalie Ingram. I am a Woy Woy local, artist and graphic designer. I have been passionate about art for as long as I remember. I have find childhood memories of studying picture booksintently and feeling as if I “belonged” to the artwork on their pages. I have always felt safe in the company of a good picture book. Throughout my life, nature themes including Seascapes have always been influential in my own pictures so my art is my expression of the things I love. As my art has evolved I find myself incorporating more of “my nature” into my art. Things such as being more mindful of my impact on this planet. I try to use recycled elements in my work. Vintage wallpapers, textiles, beads and other ‘treasured trash’ for my collage work. Being loose and intuitive, eclectic and fabulously imperfect is my motto when being creative. Go with the flow and expect wonderful outcomes.

AUTHOR YASMIN DAVAR
Why I wrote Our Peaceful Planet
I
’ve been around long enough to see that our path towards peace and environmental sustainability has been slow and piecemeal. No sooner do we do something great in one area, than we destroy something in another. What’s been missing is a framework for creating holistic and lasting positive change in our world. I could see the framework, and I felt it was my responsibility to share it and provide a positive, alternate pathway in Our Peaceful Planet. Because each part of our world – our beliefs, our governance, environment, industries and economy – dynamically interact, the only way to provide a complete solution is to consider all of those interactions in totality. Change in the world starts from within each of us. Our world, on a personal level to a world-wide level, is a reflection of the beliefs we hold about ourselves, others and our environment. In addition to that, the pain we see in the world is a reflection of the pain that hold inside. We ripple that pain out into the world through our actions, and our actions are based on our beliefs. The first step to creating our peaceful planet then, is to address our own pain and change our negative personal and collective beliefs. We accompany this tremendous change with positive actions to create lasting peace and environmental sustainability around the world. Our Peaceful Planet covers the whole range of global peace and sustainability issues, from creating peace in post-conflict societies to incorporating the environment into our economy, and everything in between. For each topic, I demonstrate the extent of what we have created, explain why it’s a problem, and outline the actions we can take to create peace and sustainability. There is enormous good in the world. People want to make a positive difference. There are so many people, like you, undertaking kind actions and doing good things for those in need and for our environment. Now it’s time to amplify that, by removing our pain and negative beliefs, standing in our power and spreading our inner peace throughout the world. – Yasmin Davar

REVIEWS Nuture Cards RRP $29.95 • Available @ Gnostic Forest
My name is Roxanne, I am the creator of Nurture Cards, and the mother of 2 beautiful girls. The illustrations I chose to create are designed for children to relate to. I actually made a choice to make them ‘imperfectly perfect’. Often not using a ruler for lines, and trying not to make the drawing too ‘perfect’. With an emphasis on keeping each card bright and colourful. Focusing on issues children deal with, and using words that they understand. GNOSTIC VIEWPOINT - The most important assets to any community is its children. They are the promise of a better future and Roxanne gives encouraging nuturing thoughts to inspire our kids to become their best! – MH

DECEMBER

FEBRUARY
Serious thinking and unpredictability will be knocking on your door this month. This requires some mental effort, clearing up old projects that are outdated. Patience is required to organise your goals – studying, writing, art, music or travel. At times tension may arise and you could feel some inner rage, feeling like you have failed, unable to reach your goals. Take care, accidents can happen, and think very carefully of what it is you really really want to achieve. Take time out to either meditate or find a quiet place to regenerate your thoughts.
Feeling confident, self assured and empowered that your life is now on track and you are in control of your own destiny. Having sound judgement for all opportunities for advancement and promotion will bring a sense of relief. Exploring new connections through groups or individuals can bring a few stressful moments. You may overcommit yourself and feel overwhelmed. Try to find some alone time for yourself to reevaluate and reassess your personal goals.
“Work hard or work smart” – this month will be up to you! This can be a painful and emotional time. Using your integrity on projects which benefit others will bring satisfaction. Responsibilities towards fellow humans is paramount, and if you remain open to varied possibilities these will bring opportunities to open up new pathways for your future. Allow the past to remain in the past and allow the healing experience to help you find an appropiate avenue of expression for wisdom gained.
