Welcome

wenty years! Woy Woy has seen a lot of change since we first arrived in 1998. Taking over the old RTA office on Chambers Place, Mary Holstein and partners brought a love of knowledge, alternative medicine and colour to the Peninsula. We didn’t realise it then but Gnostic Forest would become the largest and longest standing new age store in our region. The evolution of the street has overseen tumultuous times globally. The friendly faces here have been a welcome relief to those seeking shelter from the weird world. We have evolved to include so much more than the original store but without the fearless, tireless creativity of Mary none of this – including me – would be possible. So thanks Mum. From me, from our amazing staff and our business partners – both now and over the years, our wonderful customers and our myriad of suppliers here and overseas. Thank you. Love ya work! Emily

CELEBRATE

a Gnostic FoRest Mary Holstein

A

long time ago in the 1900’s I was an active member of our local parish Catholic Church. Having grown up in a loosely Catholic family I had always had a strong connection to the spiritual side of life and attended a church primary school until 5th class. I accepted that there was a creator who we called God and that everything we experienced was part of a grand plan. We were told that we all had a personal Guardian Angel – an invisible companion that would help us out in times of trouble. This was a comforting thought and helped me as a child when I had nightmares or if I was being chased by a neighbourhood dog. I just wasn’t afraid like some of the other kids who might not have been told about their secret invisible wing man/woman. When you are a kid you tend to accept the things adults tell you and if they are dressed in nun’s habits or priests robes the authority is amplified. I also thought my family was normal and everyone else’s was a variation of that normal. As I grew older I realised that there was no normal – we are all just doing our best with the level of consciousness we have, guided by those we trust. I also started to question the dogmatic views of the church. Don’t get me wrong, I am really happy to have grown up with the guidelines and conscience the early days of Catholic education gave me. However, in order to evolve as a human, I think it was very helpful for me to question things and discover new truths. In 1997 I had the idea to open a shop and sell books and crystals, to offer people ideas and tools to better understand this physical experience, while at the same time helping to bridge the unseen with the known worlds. Gnostic Forest was opened in Bateau Bay in Sept 1997. By March 23rd 1998 we opened our 2nd shop in Woy Woy (on the site which is now Gnostic Wellness Centre).

In the past 20 years Gnostic Forest has moved like a wandering gypsy around what has now become known as Gnostic Corner. Opportunities have appeared, and I guess with my earlier acceptance of a grand plan and the comfort of feeling gently guided by a guardian angel, I have allowed the “Gnostic” experience to expand. This has only been possible with the assistance of my family and friends. There are so many kinds of energy required to run a business. The first would be emotional – without courage no idea is ever acted upon. The second might be financial – everything costs money in this modern world. The third is co-operation – unless things flow nothing is ever achieved. So, with faith, over the last 20 years an amazing band of people have showed courage and co-operation to invest their emotional and financial energy to create the flow that you now experience as Gnostic Corner. With gratitude we open our doors daily, knowing that it is because of our community that we are still here. G

MAMA Medicine Food

These pregnancy superfoods are loaded with nourishing nutrients that will give you and your baby all the nutritional support required. Making healthy dietary choices each day is the best way to ensure a low risk pregnancy. Avocado Avocados are delicious! I am pretty sure I ate at least one of these buttery fruits each day during pregnancy. The nutrient dense fruit is packed with minerals, antioxidants, dietary fibre, and vitamins offering numerous benefits for both mum and bub. Not only are avos a great pregnancy superfood, but they are also an amazing first food for bub. Beetroot This beautifully coloured gift from nature takes the concept of ‘food as medicine’ to a new level of excellence! Full of iron and dietary fibre, beetroot also helps with the cleansing of the blood and liver. Beetroot is best enjoyed raw, by grating it through your favourite salads, or by juicing it with green apple, lime juice, coconut water, and fresh mint. Chia Seeds Pregnancy can deplete your body of important nutrients, and eating chia seeds can help replace those lost nutrients. Chia seeds are easy to fit into your daily routine and benefit not only the mother’s health, but the baby’s development as well. These micro sized seeds are important for a baby’s brain development and will decrease allergies and eczema. Chia seeds are also the highest known plant source of omega-3s. Fresh Dates Since ancient times, women were given fresh dates before and after the birth to strengthen their bones and muscles. The precious date contains vital minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, sodium, iron, potassium, magnesium, and zinc. You may find that this high energy food, and its natural sugar content is useful as a pre or post labour snack. The Egg It’s pretty darn impressive that the humble egg contains over eleven essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, B1, B2, B12, and E, iodine, selenium, iron, and folate! This nutrient dense, whole-food is an great source of protein and is vital for energy and total health. Organic, pastured eggs are best. Fantastic Figs Both dried and fresh figs are naturally rich in loads of health benefiting antioxidants and vitamins. G

6

Throughout Turkey, the fig is traditionally used for lowering cholesterol levels, and treating diabetes and constipation. For a real breakfast treat, try slicing up a fresh fig onto a slice of spelt sourdough toast that has been smeared with goat’s cheese, raw honey, and a pinch of pink salt. Delish! Organic Ghee Traditionally used as a postnatal healing food in Ayurvedic medicine, ghee is entirely made of healthy fat and helps in the production of digestive enzymes and absorption of minerals. Ghee is delicious, it can be used in cooking in so many different ways. Look up some recipes that include ghee online! Greens Nutrient-dense greens like kale, spinach, broccoli, and celery are full of immune-boosting minerals and beneficial enzymes. Green juicing is great for alkalising and gently cleansing the body. Adding a specialised greens supplement to your beverages is an easy option. A raw greens powder is generally a composition of spirulina, chlorella, barley grass, wheat grass, alfalfa grass, and marine plant minerals especially united to give the body a big hit of vital nutrients.

Healthy Fats Healthy fats like avocado, flaxseed oil, chia seeds, olive oil, coconut oil, organic butter, grass-fed bone broth, nuts and seeds will help stabilise blood sugar, improve digestion and regulate blood pressure. With lack of sleep and increased stress, a mama-to-be will need all the help she can get absorbing the nutrients her body needs for sustained energy. Kefir Kefir is a fermented milk drink and considered a probiotic food; it contains more than 30 beneficial bacteria strains. Including kefir in your diet will help promote a healthy balance of intestinal flora, which will improve digestion, boost immune health and help to produce vitamins B12 and K. Kefir is a source of protein and rich in the amino acid tryptophan, which is known for its calming effect and sleep support. Kefir is best drunk on its own or added to smoothies. Sunflower Seeds During pregnancy our nutritional needs increase to support our growing babies and bellies. There is one simple food which packs a nutritional power punch: the humble little sunflower seed. Include a daily dose of these vitamin and dietary rich treasures to salad, steamed veggies, or breakfast time cereals. Turmeric Turmeric has been shown to have strong anti-inflammatory properties and is beneficial for arthritis and rheumatism. Try mixing a pinch of turmeric powder and black pepper into one teaspoon of organic coconut oil and ingesting first thing in the morning. Nutritional Yeast Nutritional yeast has a nutty, cheesy taste and is often referred to as vegan cheese, making it a great parmesan cheese substitute for healthy pasta dishes. One tablespoon of nutritional yeast contains loads and loads of folate. Pregnant women need about 800 micrograms of folate daily, so one tablespoon of nutritional yeast meets more than 100 percent of your daily needs. Woo hoo!

dog 2018 the year of the

What a nice change it will be from last year – the dog is loyal.

I

n the Year of the Dog we can anticipate a nice change from the noisy, boastful busyness of the Year of the Roster which was last year. While the Roster often likes to grandstand, the dog mostly likes to quietly lie about. This year we expect people to be nicer, kinder to each other. It won’t be a year where everyone is out to make a fortune. When money is needed it will come. The last few years has been about big profits, being better than the other person. This year people will be more content with what they have, who their friends are and how can they be of support. This year the news won’t be so harsh. There will be a sunny side to any bad news we receive. Last year a large number of old cases worldwide were closed. If you did anything wrong, or big business did the wrong thing it was brought to our notice. Not this year. The year of the dog will be black or white. No greys. You are with me or against me. It will be the truth straight up front. A strong loyalty. This will flow over into sports, people will have their team, be it football or choosing a leader. And the colours will fly high. The dog likes you or not. But it should be on friendly ground. There is an upside to all this – people will know where they stand. Governments and leaders won’t try and hide things from the people. There will be much more loyalty. If someone says something, you should hold them to their word.

In other years, there was a lot of righteous “listen to me” attitudes on a world scale, and on a personal scale. This year, leaders of counties will talk more, and try to achieve better outcomes. On the home front, you will be able to sit quietly and talk things out. After all, the dog likes peace. He will only become violent if attacked on his own territory. The dog will work hard when he wants to (or has to), and then lay by the fire and rest. So we can expect things in 2018 to go at a slower pace. People want to work with each other not against each other. The dog likes rewards, nothing big, a gentle pat on the back, a small treat will go a long way in 2018. The best way to get through the year of the dog is with fairness, loyalty and trust – which I think won’t do any of us any harm! June Turner is a Feng Shui Practitioner. Tel: 4399 2018

autumn Essential OiLs a

utumn is the season for balancing light and dark and can be a struggle for adjustment or even feeling stuck, letting go, and accepting that everything changes. It is a time of inner reflection and preparation before winter arrives. Some people don’t like autumn as the days get darker and shorter, the temperature drops, and we can start to catch the sniffles and bugs that winter can bring. It is possible to embrace this season, and keep a healthy mind, body and soul. There is joy in every moment, life is ever evolving, and we can use mother nature to support us through our journey. Essential oils have the unique ability to soothe the mind, elevate the spirit and help heal the physical. Essential oils associated with Autumn are: Ginger, Clove, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Lemon, Sweet Orange, Patchouli, Sage, Sandalwood, Frankincense & Myrrh.

Letting go of Emotions When we are struggling with the mental and emotional challenges that the autumn change can bring. These essential oils can be used to help bring back some balance and positivity. Gumleaf Essentials CHILL OUT BLEND - Rose, Frankincense, Bergamot, Basil, Orange, Ylang Ylang Essential Oil. This embracing blend may help overcome feelings of fear and anxiety, balance moods and improve concentration and confidence. My favourite essential oils for letting go are:

◆◆ ◆◆ ◆◆ ◆◆

Bergamot – helps you let go of anger, anxiety, loneliness, insecurity, and fear. Cedarwood – helps you overcome meekness. Frankincense – elevates and stimulates the mind. Geranium – helps you let go of wanting to please everyone.

Accepting Change & Transformation “The only constant is change.” As temperature drops to the tune of leaves falling, autumn illustrates the beauty of letting go. Autumn is the time to face this darkness, a physical reminder of that which we must cull within

ourselves. There are essential oils that can help us accept the changes that are happening in our lives. They are Cypress, Melissa, Rosewood & Orange. Colds, Flu and Body Aches The start of the cooler months brings a unique set of health challenges. Essential oils can be a part of your first line of defence. For an all-round easy to use blend the Gumleaf Essential – Easy Breathe Essential Oil Blend of Eucalyptus, Lavender, Pine & Peppermint essential oils. This blend is your autumn and winter first aid kit in a bottle. The best essential oils for colds are Thyme & Ginger. For the flu it’s the oils of Tea Tree, Lemon, Thyme, Eucalyptus & Peppermint. Warming up from the cold & easing your joints and pains oils are - Ginger, Clove & Cinnamon. Essential oils for Fighting bugs in general are – Eucalyptus, Sweet Orange, Tea Tree and Lemon. Dive in, enjoy Autumn and Happy Blending! *Essential Oil Safety - Do not use essential oils internally, unless under the supervision of a doctor or qualified Aromatherapy practitioner. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition, consult your doctor before using these products. HOLIST ICDOG

The Canine Holistic Wellness Centre is for people who care for their animal’s natural health. Sharlene Goodworth spoke with us about the Centre. Yours is a very unique business. How did this come about and what was the vision? After 2 decades in the animal health industry, I saw a need to offer another approach that would aid in identifying the primary cause of sickness or disease. By identifying and treating the underlying cause, we can elevate the presenting symptoms by reducing or removing pharmaceutical medications. Acting and educating on what is required to prevent disease in animals is one of our goals. We would rather see our clients avoid health issues by teaching our pet parents to be proactive about their day to day choices. Sometimes “less” is more! What is your background? My background is in animal health science combined with an equine dentistry practice for 20 years and now as a qualified animal wellness practitioner at the Canine Holistic Wellness Centre. We use our own award winning Naturopathic Hair Analysis Testing offering Dietary Management, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Herbal Medicines combined with other modalities such as Bio-mechanical Massage, Veterinary Acupuncture, CBD Therapy, Mitochondria Cellular Repair, Epi-genetics and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapies among others. Why is there a holistic philosophy behind your business? We look at the entire animal holistically - emotional, mental, physical and spiritual. If we know better we can do better by looking at the entire animal, not just one part. Eg: we see front limb lameness which is being caused by hind gut dysfunction. If we treat the lameness and mask the pain we have missed the mark at healing the pet. Nothing changes and the animal repetitively requires conventional veterinary treatment. Our approach is to repair the gut function abnormality and watch the lameness disappears. Treat the cause and generally evade the presenting symptoms. G

12

Do you see a mirror in the health of our animals and our own human behaviour towards health? Absolutely! Pet parents seek conventional veterinary treatment as people do with GPs. We see pet parents tolerating and accepting that its ok for their pet to be layered on multi prescribed medications. People are unaware there is another option to their pet’s health care needs. Owners are starting to move away from conventional veterinary care and seek more holistic options. They find they have unsuccessfully used conventional veterinary treatment without improvement. They then seek us to try a more holistic approach for a different outcome. In a perfect world what would you like to see in our relationships with our pets? I would like to see health harmony providing longevity. Pets that don’t suffer unnecessarily from avoidable sickness and disease because pet parents are misinformed about what is real quality nutrition and the risks and dangers of accumulative preventative medication. To improve the pet parents stress of a sick pet and enhance the richness of optimal health. How does owning a pet improve our lifestyle? In a million ways. Pets talk to us. Their love is unconditional, are always happy to see us, are never judgemental, and they’re the most loyal friends one could ask for. They get us off the couch to exercise, get us to socialise and they listen to our hearts when we are sad. They are great companions, they enhance our lives with their unique personalities that hit a galaxy of emotions providing a rich tapestry of forever memories. Hence why we strive to increase the longevity of pets. The way you would like to be contacted? People can contact us through Facebook – Canine Holistic Wellness Centre or call the clinic on 4324 9992 and please leave a message.

TRAVEL ARIZONA

T

he last shuttle bus of the evening hurtled through a dark desert highway and into the early hours of the morning. The sun would soon rise over Arizona for the annual Tucson International Gem Show. Coming here was the culmination of a 20 year wish to see where the world buys its stones and to meet the dealers and miners who come here each year to try and make their fortune. In 63 years the show has evolved from a small gathering of 9 card tables at the high school to one of the world’s premier industry events. Some 40 separate shows are held across town simultaneously with each having up to a thousand exhibitors. Every year, the influx of sellers, miners, dealers and buyers descends upon town and this year, I was one of them. Being in the industry since the ripe old age of 14 – my first weekend job being at Gnostic Forest – I was excited to be at this holy grail of earth’s treasures. Excitement that soon gave way to overwhelm and intimidation. The sheer scale of what happens here hit me in the morning light. Tucson’s population swells to nearly double most years. Were I not in the safe hands of a 15 year veteran I might have gotten lost on the roads between the satellite shows. In each monumental football field sized tent we found dealers: Afghans, Moroccans, Colombians, Mexicans, Peruvians, Madagascans, Brazilians, Chinese, Indians. A united nations of sorts. Sharing the minerals of their home country as well as more that has been traded whilst here. The international visitors were just as diverse. We met a group of Indian doctors at lunch one day while seated in a communal dining area under the blazing sun. They had between them a small paper bag of stones to which I remarked “Not a bad start!” It was only when we learned they had arrived by private jet and would soon venture on to Las Vegas that I humbly realised they may not be hunting for tumbled stones and their small bag was most probably my entire show budget. Diamonds? Emeralds? I never did find out but perhaps I will if I ever take up G 14

the offer of free medical operations should we happen to be in Delhi. Relaxed buying belonged to the Tucsonians who milled and wandered around the busy international wholesalers. Rock hounding is a local fascination with the yearly event bringing the best to their doorstep. Time was of the essence for us though. Days were spent criss-crossing town: Pricing, picking, packing, paying, always in the shadow of the Santa Catalina mountain ranges surrounding town. The dust was as prolific as the stones! At night we would hear coyotes howling and we even spotted an elusive road runner one day. Running. On a road. Fast friendships, quick deals, cultural exchange and old friends welcoming this newcomer into the fold. Learning the stories behind trade names given to popular stones, seeing new finds from the miners themselves. Doubtless there will be some re-living as we unpack the shipment. For now though, I will day dream of the 6 foot tall specimens and give thanks to the men and women I met who bring them to the world. – Emily H.

HEALTH

Persistent Pathogens and SIBO Do you suffer from any of these symptoms? ◆◆ Bloating, flatulence and burping ◆◆ Abdominal pain and cramps ◆◆ Altered bowel movements – such as alternating constipation and diarrhoea ◆◆ Headaches ◆◆ Joint pain and arthritis ◆◆ Fatigue ◆◆ Skin symptoms (eczema, rosacea or rashes) ◆◆ Mood symptoms (anxiety and depression) ◆◆ Cognitive symptoms (brain fog) ◆◆ Deficiency symptoms (anaemia, hypocalcaemia, neuropathy) ◆◆ Weight loss, weight gain and or anaemia

These symptoms may be associated with a condition called SIBO which stands for Small Intestinal Bowel Overgrowth. This is a condition where abnormally large amounts of bacteria that normally reside in the large intestine migrate into the small intestine. They are often predominantly Gram-negative bacteria that ferment carbohydrates into gas. The above symptoms may also be associated with SIFO or Small Intestinal Fungal Overgrowth which is characterised by an excessive number of fungal organisms, mainly of the candida species in the small intestine. The herbalists at The Natural Apothecary and The Gnostic Wellness Centre see this presentation often. We use herbal tinctures to “kill off” the pathogenic bacteria and dietary recommendations to starve them. When required, we give our clients a nutritional programme specific to their sensitivities. This programme is populated with simple recipes and a shopping list. We relish in seeing the symptoms above resolve as the bacteria normalise and the lining of the intestine is healed.

Disorders that are associated with SIBO are: ◆◆ Irritable bowel syndrome ◆◆ Skin disorders ◆◆ Mood disorders ◆◆ Parkinson’s Disease ◆◆ Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver ◆◆ Rheumatoid Arthritis ◆◆ Malabsorption Syndromes ◆◆ Diabetes and metabolic syndrome ◆◆ Deep vein Thrombosis ◆◆ Inflammatory Bowel Disease ◆◆ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome ◆◆ Fibromyalgia

Drop in and make an appointment to see one of our Herbalists if you feel this relates to you. We are commonly asked how long this takes to treat. This depends on the length of time the condition has been present, the degree of intestinal epithelial damage and other co-morbitities as well as the individuals’ constitution. Six to eight weeks for high gas presentation; however often patients may need multiple rounds/herbal rotations. For further information on SIBO, the underlying pathogens and the benefits of the relevant herbs used contact Megan on 02 4342 0434 G 17

Ophiuchus

W

The 13th Sign

e are cells of the Earth and it is our larger energetic body. This body is sensitively connected to the solar system and beyond. The photon ripples of light that stem from the 13 sign energies are being channelled by the changing patterns of the planets and Earth’s ascending hours. These energies have been continually arriving from the far reaches of space. When you create your birth chart you can see what your unique pattern looks like and what your destiny will involve. The 13 sign system is not only more accurate in terms of astronomical alignments; it also provides an even deeper explanation as to why our lives turn out the way they do. The signs in the 13 system vary in size (as this is how they are in the actual constellations), and as such they are not standardised to be 30 degrees in size (as in the 12 sign tropical system). This means that the planetary placements in your birth chart may change with a 13 sign birth chart reading, but the end

product is a deeper and more revealing experience into appreciating your gifts, opportunities and lessons that you are here to embody. Ophiuchus, being the 13th sign, sits between Scorpio and Sagittarius. It has a healing power and knowledge to give back to humanity, which over time and for many reasons has been oppressed by the status quo. Ophiuchus is the serpent holder; the keeper of ancient secrets of deep psychology, those occult nurturing powers, Indigenous knowledge and the translation scribes that explain life, death, and its renewal. Ophiuchus is here to awaken our dormant energy in order for it to move through our bodies and activate a power that has been traditionally misunderstood and unexplored. The resurgence of Ophiuchus is a key event to be celebrated and is reflected in the alternative healing therapies being embraced by more people. This is a quiet and gentle revolution that is gaining attention as it transforms peoples’ awareness.

Gnostic People Q&A Gary Neave

When did you first visit Gnostic Corner? After retiring from my career as a Civil Engineer I moved to Woy Woy in about 2002. My interest in organic food led me to Gnostic Organics where I met Mary’s sister Louise. The conversation led to a discussion about my other interest in philosophy. Around that same time, I was introduced to Mary when Gnostic Forest was in Brickwharf Road. Soon after I was invited to give a series of free talks in the Gnostic School of Higher Learning. Since that time, I held classes for the next ten years. How have you seen it evolve from that time? My talks in those early days were based loosely on the teachings of the School of Philosophy in Sydney, which I attended for 11 years. Over time the talks evolved to include not only the wisdom of the ancient sacred texts but also modern discoveries in Quantum theory and how they complement each other. Dozens of people from all walks of life attended my classes over those years and their input and questions motivated me to continue my own learning and research to share with the group. The feedback and friendship I have received has been heart-warming and encouraging. The group was a significant part of my life during that time. 20 years ago the world was a different place - have you seen humanity improving in any way? As Shakespeare said, “There is no such thing as good or bad but thinking makes it so.” Given this idea I believe that our view of the world and humanity is as we make it ourselves. What have been the major changes in your own life in the past 20 years? The most significant changes in my life in the last 20 years since my wife Sue passed away, have involved my connections with the Gnostic Family. I met wonderful people and have been able to continue practising healthy living, meditation and yoga. My greatest comfort these days is the wonderful life I have with my partner Debbie who I was fortunate to meet through the Gnostic Family.

Christine Bannigan

When did you first visit Gnostic Corner? I moved from Glebe to the coast in 2002 and was hungry for spiritual contact. I was grateful when I discovered a little shop in Woy Woy where I could attend meditation and have readings. Of course it was the Gnostic Forest. How have you seen it evolve from that time? I have seen that little shop, that had a curtain in the corner for readings, relocate and expand to become a corner village known as Gnostic Corner. The Gnostic Forest is a sacred space that provides inspiration, discreet guidance, opportunities to expand and evolve, and sacred objects for purchase. There are spaces for readings, meditation, spiritual teachings, crystals, flowers, jewellery, books and objects for the home. The Gnostic Corner has so much more on offer with the cafe, organic groceries, clothing. 20 years ago the world was a different place - have you seen humanity improving in any way? Oh yes! I see that the world around us is a mirror of ourselves. As I’ve evolved I’ve watched humanity become more conscious of itself as a spiritual force of One. I’ve heard small children, who are born conscious, speak about past lives, a way forward for humanity, the power of love and compassion, and I’ve heard them reprimand adults for cruelty to animals. With these guys in our midst I have great hope for humanity. What have been the major changes in your own life in the past 20 years? I’m unrecognisable! I ran into an ex-colleague, someone I’d worked with in my corporate days. We had a drink together and he remarked, “You look the same but when you open your mouth and speak I don’t recognise you.” I have transformed from a stressed out, materialistic, money focused person to someone who knows that everything happens for a reason and when I trust this, the reason is revealed. I know that the Universe has nothing better to do than to assist us to create our dreams. I don’t worry and I know that the material resources required to create my path forward will be there when they are needed. Ah bliss!

Medicine Crow

When did you first visit Gnostic Corner? I reckon my first visit to the ‘Gnostic Forest’ was in 1999. How have you seen it evolve from that time? I kinda feel the first change came when Gabrielle and Jacob took over Mana cafe around 2003. It was a small cafe and the Gnostic Forest was a small shop where there now is the 2nd dining room of Gnostic Mana. There was a curtain at the back of the old Gnostic shop and behind it we did workshops on a couple of sofas. Nowadays it has expanded into GNOSTIC CORNER, becoming a large New Age centre for people looking for everything from spiritual information, exotic clothing, crystals, and healing to beautiful organic foods, flowers and herbal supplements. 20 years ago the world was a different place – have you seen humanity improving in any way? Over the past 20 years I’ve seen the human tribe becoming more separate and extreme, living their lives through the small screen, preparing to send messages rather than have a conversation. We are distracted with wanting to be connected and loved, telling our life stories and woes on Facebook. Meanwhile the other side of us is reaching for ascension, through yoga, wing chung, meditation or to veganism. Being pure and fit, while we destroy our planet with garbage and waste.. choking our water and land and air.. with little thought for all the other people who share this planet with us. Many of us are more concerned about how sexy our muscles, breast, bums are rather than connecting with spirit. We think too bloody much and not feel deep enough. There is a new rise of women’s power as we move into this new millennium of the feminine energy. Just look at any detective series or even in politics as women become the W I C (the woman in charge). Well finally! What have been the major changes in your own life in the past 20 years? As for me.. well, I’ve had my fair share of Shaman’s Deaths, absolutely don’t want any more. I continue to grow as I find myself ascending with a new sense of purpose to be a better teacher and Shaman, helping my sisters and brothers to become happy, healthy, and prosperous bringing balance, grounding and harmony their lives.

YOGA

As time goes by…

T

he 20th anniversary of “Gnostic” is a time to celebrate the birthday of a concept which has given the Woy Woy Peninsula a spiritual heart. It’s certainly a time for reflection on what I was doing 20 years ago. My life was totally different in 1998 and I couldn’t even imagine in my wildest dreams that in 2018 I’d be part of the Gnostic family, an even wilder is the idea that I’d be a yoga teacher. In 1998 I was Police Officer, a profession that started for me as a teenager and lasted over 20 years. The two occupations couldn’t be more opposite and to make the transition from one job to the other required a huge commitment to change management. The world of policing is very unique and the range of duties required to be undertaken is immense, the range of skills needed to do the job is far reaching. Bound by vast rules and regulations the degree of scrutiny police officers face is massive. High levels of stress related illness are prevalent and the level of Police suicide is by far over represented. As a Police Officer you can make a huge difference to people’s lives. Being part of the thin blue line and making people safe is an incredible privilege and a very rewarding experience. Being of service to the public, offering compassion and empathy to people in times of need, enforcing law without bias or judgement and referring G

26

people to higher jurisdictions are part of the Policing role and there’s a lot of similarities in the world of Yoga. As a yoga teacher I’m not enforcing law but I certainly encourage adherence to an ethical code, namely the Yoga Sutras. Patanjali in his classic treatise defines a code of ethical standards and behaviours for Yogi’s to follow. A failure to comply doesn’t lead to arrest but to gain maximum benefits of the yoga practices adherence to the code of ethics certainly enhancing the experience. Teaching Yoga without bias or attachment and offering this philosophy to every BODY and every MIND without judgment is a responsibility of the teacher and paramount to yoga remaining pure and significant in the future. Similarly, the Police are required to enforce the law and offer Policing services without bias. The coming together of these professions has been brought together as we offer “Front-line Yoga” classes to the Police and other emergency service workers who have been traumatised by their jobs, free of charge. The key similarity is SERVICE! John Wilson, www.peninsulayogacentre.com.au. John is a true local, having been a resident of the Woy Woy Peninsula for 30 years and has offered Yoga classes for over 10 years.

Gnostic Mana Cafe features monthly exhibitions from the Central Coast’s leading artists. MARCH: Christine Armstrong This exhibition is an opportunity to bring together and showcase my varied artwork centering around the ever changing and ever challenging Australian landscape. From our local coastline, waterways, country and interstate, this continent is brimming with colour, texture and inspiration. I have been happily working as an exhibiting and selling Artist for over 30 years and had the privilege of studying under many of Australia’s best Landscape Artists. I also teach local art classes for children, teens and adults. I love to work in various mediums often combining them together to create and capture this lands beauty through art.

APRIL: Georgia Vowless A collection of works that surround the idea of nature, womanhood and nature’s connection to us. Some works are from reference studies, while others are expressions of things I hold important in my life. I work, paint and draw everyday so I get better.

MAY: Jodie Freeman I am an Aboriginal artist, from the Kamilaroi tribe. My artwork is a modern style, embracing and combining my Aboriginal heritage with my spiritual beliefs. Each piece tells a story and has a heartfelt meaning behind it. I discovered my deep passion for dot paintings in my late 20’s, through a mission of self discovery, researching my family history and meditation. While I’m creating, the dots have quite a meditative effect and I allow this to take over and let my spirit and my ancestors guide my hand, telling stories through my work. I have exhibited in galleries on the Central Coast and have sold artworks worldwide. I look forward to sharing my works and stories.
