orking on Gnostic Corner many people ask us what does “Gnostic” mean? Gnostic is an ancient Greek word meaning knowledge gained by personal experience. Like many ancient Greek words the meaning is more of a feeling. Intellectual knowing about something that you have been told or have learned will never be as deep and real as the knowing gained by personal experience. You can describe the beauty of the nature of Waterfall Bay, but to actually be there and experience the smell of the bush while you sit on the rocks and watch the way the water travels through both, listening to the sound as it gently enters the bay below is to have the Gnosis gained by experience. A full life is one explored through the senses. Trying to describe the sound of the symphony orchestra will never come close to sitting in the audience and feeling the music. Our Vision, created in 1998, was to provide goods and services that help the individual to find their own truth. Everyone’s perception is subjective and so their path to fulfilment will be unique. We hope to encourage visitors to Gnostic Corner to explore this world and all its mysteries, understanding their place in creation and their ability to manifest the life they desire. Mary

PERSPECTIVE

Belief Systems W e are living in a sea of information, natural and man made vibrations are surrounding us at any given moment. It is impossible to exist without these vibrations.Information is stored and transmitted in vibrations. Each living being – and I define living as anything that grows – interprets these vibrations through physical or subtle senses and then uses this knowledge to exist. Scientists have observed that plants use a process known as photosynthesis to process light vibrations into chemical energy to fuel their growth. The eardrum converts vibration into sound, so if a tree falls in the forest and there is no-one there it cannot make a sound as the vibration remains unconverted. You can either accept or you can reject the previous paragraphs. Be careful – if accepted they will become part of your belief system. Your free will allows you to accept, interpret or reject anything. Your family, society and culture have already heavily influenced your beliefs . Yep, things that have been accepted by others were passed on to you as truths. Living in the 21st century there is so much new information coming at you through the vibratory field you live in, your level of consciousness will determine how much and what you are able understand. Everyone of us has this invisible belief system – all the things we have accepted as true have been taken onboard and now tell us how the

world works. Other folk with different experiences will have different belief systems. These sneaky beliefs become filters which create perception. What seems normal and reasonable behaviour to one person will seems completely odd and maybe a little crazy to somebody else. If I have had the experience of the Postman delivering the mail regularly each day before lunch, I could make the assumption that mail is delivered in the mornings and add this to my belief system. If the mail doesn’t arrive until 3pm one day I might think something has gone wrong, because my belief system wasn’t validated. Things in this world do change and if I’m going to have a happy time I need to – just like my computer – be ready to update and take on new beliefs. Maybe, what if, the new Postman doesn’t eat lunch until 3.30pm? Or worse still what if, delivering mail has no connection to eating at all? Before we get too upset about the goings on at the letterbox I could create a habit of challenging my own belief system from time to time. Ask myself ‘do I really know that?’ or ‘is that still true?’ And the perfect time to challenge this limited belief system is when something upsets me. That’s the signal, a trigger to alert me that perhaps unlikely as it is – I could be wrong. Gnostic Mary – Believe it or not!

angeLs T

he word Angel comes from the Greek word angelos which means messenger. It is considered that Angels are assigned to bring messages to humanity from God. Specific angels can assist in healing or guiding those who have recently died. Angels feature in most major religions. Christianity has guardian angels who look after individuals and keep them out of harms way. Islam has two angels known as Raqib and Atid, their specific duty is to record the thoughts and actions of every human on earth. Judaism has, amongst others, Dumah who is In charge of the souls of the dead. Zoroastrianism believes in several classes of angels and dates back to the 5th century BC. In Buddhism angels are referred to as devas or celestial beings, they are considered benevolent and pure in nature. For the Hindus it is the minor Gods that perform the same tasks as angels in other religions. In accordance with the duality of this world, for those who are aware of angels there are also fallen angels sometimes known as demons who are said to tempt humans into wrong behaviour. – Mary H.

Emotional Freedom Technique The Magic of Tapping

T

his morning my beautiful daughter asked me what I wanted to be when I was her age. After some thought, I had to be honest with both of us and admit I’d wanted to be a writer. The words caught in my throat as I realised that a few weeks ago I was offered the opportunity to write this article on a subject I’m passionate about, and here I am procrastinating and avoiding. I told her I don’t know what happened, but I never write anymore, I feel like I’ve lost the desire and the enjoyment of it. And then I said, “I should tap on that!” Emotional Freedom Technique, also known as EFT or just Tapping, is an energetic tool that promotes the harmonious flow of Qi (energy) throughout the body and rewires the brain at the same time. We gently tap points along the Meridians used in Traditional Chinese Medicine while discussing or focussing attention on a challenging situation. Stimulation of meridian points increases serotonin and reduces cortisol. It also decreases stress arousal in the amygdala (the brain’s emotional memory centre) and increases delta waves instead. Add to that talking through the situation, acknowledging and allowing the emotions, and you create the perfect environment for the mind and body to do what they do best – bring themselves back into alignment! Practically, this alignment means reduced stress and anxiety, increased clarity, confidence and selfesteem, release of addictions and negative habits, and an overall increase in general wellbeing both physical and emotional.

I get so excited about EFT because it connects us to the inner wisdom of the body to identify and soothe the resistance, limiting patterns and old traumas, often held since childhood, that cause emotional discomfort even as they develop into physical ailments. Our intelligent body knows exactly what it needs to regain harmony, and I’m always impressed with how quickly tapping works to bring myself and my clients back to ease and flow. It really does seem like magic as things that have felt stuck for years are untangled and released in the space of an hour. As I tapped away on why I didn’t want to write this article I felt soothed even quicker than that – in less than 20 minutes I was ready to start typing, after several weeks of feeling paralysed at the mere thought. I guess I probably should’ve got tapping sooner! Kate Leuenberger is a Counsellor and EFT Facilitator at The Gnostic Wellness Centre www.becominghappy.com.au

maneki nek The Welcoming Cat

a

s far back as 5000 years ago, the Cat has symbolised prosperity and protection for various cultures. The cat was seen as a symbol of prosperity because it protected the grain from the rats in ancient Egypt and Sudan. In Thailand, the Goddess Nang Kwok also has her hand raised like the Maneki Neko, to symbolise protection and abundance. In Japan, one of the stories about Maneki Neko is that a cat used to sit in front of the Gotokuji Temple in Tokyo and held up its paw to beckon people in. The legend tells of a warrior passing a temple and saw a cat lying lazily on the steps. Unexpectedly, the cat straightened up and raised its paw to wave. The warrior walked up in surprise. Suddenly a flash of lightning hit where he had just left. Later the warrior became quite wealthy and donated much of his money to the temple. The temple still exists today and cat lovers go there to pray for the good health of their pets.

SMUDGING

CLEAR NEGATIVE ENERGY The concept of using smoke to clear negativity is not new. Indigenous people have been doing it for thousands of years.

If a space or a person feels out of sorts or uneasy there could well be an energy that is trapped and needs clearing. Using a white sage smudge stick you should close the windows and doors. Disarm the smoke alarm if you have one. A shower cap over the alarm sensor will save your neighbours the trouble of phoning the Fire Brigade. Light the stick and allow it to smoke, the flame will naturally reduce to smoke. Fill the space and by having the windows and doors closed you should get a thick smoke within minutes. Travel from room to room and repeat this process. During this practice remember to concentrate on the kind of energy you want, don’t be focused on what you are trying to clear. A positive mantra is helpful to keep focus on what you want. When you have completed this clearing ritual systematically open all the

windows and doors and release both the smoke and any negativity. Appreciate the new feeling and give gratitude for the clearing you have created. If you are clearing a person, get them to sit or stand still preferably on the earth. Use the smoking sage stick to travel from their head around their entire body towards the ground. The energy that is blocking them will be transmuted through the earth. They should do whatever they can to change their thoughts and behavior and in turn their vibration. The negative energy will no longer attach to them if they have a new vibration. One of the fastest ways to raise your vibration is with thoughts of gratitude. Gratitude is the accelerator and is guaranteed to lift your mood. In extreme cases a spirit will become earth bound and not be able to move on after passing over. This is where Ghost stories come from. You can try the above methods and if the situation persists contact a professional space clearer. – Mary H

red tent By Jill Genet

H

istorically, women have and do thrive in social groups. When women are deprived of social connections they yearn for healing, lightness, interaction and consistent support. In Western societies, women are often isolated and disconnected from crucial social connections. It has been suggested in a ground-breaking UCLA study, that the social ties forged between women are distinct. The study suggests that females are more likely to mobilize social support, especially from other females, in times of stress. They seek it out more, they receive more support, and they are more satisfied with the support they receive. These connections often play a central role in shaping who we are and who we are yet to be. Evidence suggests that females create, maintain, and utilize these social groups, especially relations with other females, to manage stressful conditions. Red Tent Australia was founded in 2013 by Jill Genet, with the goal of ensuring that women have a circle of support. Her hope was to educate, awaken and enlighten women to their power, strength and natural gifts. In 2015, a group of volunteers came together to help Jill start Red Tent Australia, a platform that connects and engages women. It was set up as a Non-Profit with the goal of opening Red Tent branches all over Australia. There are

now 28 branches in operation in the states of Queensland and New South Wales. Red Tent Australia provides women with that space to connect with other women without judgment, without feeling the need to conform and to help shed the feelings of isolation by enabling each woman to be themselves. Red tents provide an opportunity for women to be educated, awakened and enlightened to their power, strength and natural gifts. Red tents foster empowerment and encourage women to discover their inner strength, the result is renewed hope for a better tomorrow and that is precisely the energy needed to create change. Red Tent welcomes women of any age and gatherings help women go through many life transitions, from puberty, marriage or separation and motherhood, to menopause and beyond. HErBAL IMMUNE SUPPORT

A

t the Natural Apothecary, we approach preventing the flu in a holistic, individualized way. We all generally have a weaker area of the body whether it be the sinuses, bronchioles, lungs, throat, urinary tract or brain. Viruses and pathogens are smart and tend to inflame these areas first. Fortunately, Mother Nature has provided us with a cocktail of amazing herbs to support all these organs and areas of our body. We have herbs that are tropho-restorative, hence assist to restore the function of the organ, such as Crataeva for the kidneys or Mullein for the lungs.

Deep Immune Activation These herbs are used where there is a chronic problem or where the immune system needs feeding and strengthening. They are usually used in combination with other body system tonic herbs where a weakness has been identified. Some herbal examples include: •• Astragalus •• Codonopsis •• Reishi mushroom •• Shitake mushroom •• Turkey tail mushroom

Surface Immune Activation There are many plants perhaps better known as antimicrobials or “immune-boosters” that often act directly on a bacteria or virus, while also stimulating the function of the immune system as a whole. They contain active pharmacological compounds as well as volatile oils. Some herbal examples include: ••Clove ••Oregano ••Thyme ••Lemon Myrtle ••Baptisia - Wild indigo •• Echinacea Adaptogenic action or Hormonal Modulation Herbs in this group work through hormonal modulation of the immune response. The field of Psycho-neuroimmunology describes the numerous endocrine functions that can be affected

Turkey tail mushroom can be used for immune activation

by stress, our mental/emotional health, and it is largely at this level, the herbs demonstrate their actions. For example, adaptogens exert their effects via the adrenal glands which is a foundational component of healthy immune status. Herbal examples include: •• Siberian ginseng •• Licorice •• Schisandra

What is an Anti-catarrhal? These herbs help the body to remove excess mucous from the body. They’re mainly used in ear, nose and throat infections. They’ll help eliminate mucous in the sinuses while playing a role in a broader based treatment objectives.

How Anti-catarrhals work? Mucous is not in itself a problem. It’s purposefully made by the body to help rid itself of foreign bodies and infectious agents. Some remedies will work by thinning the mucous making it more watery and easier to expel, others will reduce the mucous secretions directly. The astringent action of tannins is common to many of these herbs. Herbal Examples: •• Eyebright •• Golden Seal •• Baptisia •• Elderberry •• Peppermint What is an Expectorant? These are herbs that help the body to remove excess mucous from the bronchioles and lungs; however, the word is often used to mean a remedy that is a tonic for the respiratory system. Mucous and any inhaled particles are normally excreted from the lungs via a self-cleansing mechanism that can become impeded or overG

13

loaded if there is an excessive amount of mucus or if the mucus is very thick and sticky. How Expectorants Work There are three main categories of expectorants which are important to distinguish. Some herbs seem to paradoxically do both, depending on the condition. 1) Stimulating expectorants are more indicated for cases of excessive mucous production. They often work by chemically irritating the lining of the bronchioles to stimulate the expulsion of congested material within the lungs and bronchioles. Common herbal examples include: •• Elecampagne •• Licorice 2) Soothing or Relaxing expectorants are more indicated when excessive or sticky mucous produces an unproductive and/or irritable-type cough, where they soothe bronchial spasm and loosen mucous secretion. Some owe their action to their mucilage content and volatile oils, and generally derive their action by relaxing body tissues, encouraging the production of a thinner, looser mucous which is more easily excreted. Herbal examples include: •• Licorice •• Marshmallow •• Mullein

3) Respiratory Tonic or Amphoteric may be stimulating OR soothing, depending on the body’s need, and will often aid in the regeneration of damaged or inflamed lung tissue: •• Horsetail •• Golden Seal •• Licorice Allergic Component For clients who have sensitivities to the environment, whether it be dust, mould or pollen we use antihistamine like herbs such as Albizia, Baical Scullcap or Perillia plus recommend an antihistamine diet high in Quercetin and bioflavonoids. So how do herbalists put this altogether? We make a judgement based on the client’s presentation and clinical history and decide what areas of the body require the most support, assess if there are underlying allergens, what type of immune support is required and possibly stress support.

GNOSTIC PEOPLE: Damien Giokas, Chef at Gnostic Mana Cafe How many years have you been a “Gnostic” ? I’ve always been a Gnostic but I started working on the Corner 3 years ago. What inspired you to become a chef? I just sort of fell into it really. My modeling career never really took off, I was too short to be a male stripper, too fat to be a jockey and when 1 and 2 cent coins went out of circulation my career as a gigolo died in the arse (no pun intended). An old cell mate used to tell me how hot I looked in an apron and oven mitts and it just sort of grew from there.

How do you express yourself in your profession? I just try to make the work place as fun as possible. There isn’t too many other places you are at for 40+ hours a week. What inspires you? Getting to the top of the heap through good old fashioned hard work. What holds you back? Burning the candle at both ends. Political correctness. State issued ankle bracelet. Whats the weirdest/coolest thing thats ever happened to you working here? Coolest – getting to work with an awesome bunch of people. Weirdest – seeing old men in lycra.

Gnostic Mana Cafe features monthly exhibitions from the Central Coast’s leading artists. JUNE: Karina Lee Karina Lee’s love affair with Photography began in 2011 and has continued to grow through much exploration. Though Karina Lee started photography with landscapes and animals she discovered her niche was for Fashion and portraits as Karina says, “Fashion is my passion. I like to style everything from clothes to props to create a story”. The work on display is exhibiting of Karina Lee’s Photographic journey so far. Karina Lee has been exhibited in Gosford Art Prize over the years of her journey, and also featured in local fashion outlets. July: Peter Gaffey Growing up on the Central Coast in the 70s and 80s was an idyllic time for Pete. A time of endless days and endless waves. This period formed a close connection with the ocean, which inspires his art today. To Pete “Sea Jesus” represents a surf god of sorts, “Sea Jesus” got the waves and the girls! The naive style of Pete’s work depicts a nostalgic time filled with whimsical notions - the innocence of a sun-bleached youth where boy meets girl. Pete likes to use colour in his works and enjoys the free-flowing feel that acrylic affords. Pete hopes you can appreciate the simplicity and joy that he feels when painting and you get taken back to days gone by…

Aug: Jannifer Jones I am an artist working from my home at Woy Woy Bay on the Central Coast NSW. I have been painting for around 8 years, and now devote most of my time to canvas. Previously my passion for creating included, ceramics, sculpture, interior design, fabric and recycled objects. I am a qualified cabinet maker, working for over a decade with timber, designing art pieces and furniture. My experience in all these areas allow me to be quite free in my painting, I will have a go at most subjects. Like most artists I feel the need to speak about the world around me.

ROCKS

Fairy Stones

F

ound in remote locations along the rivers and lakes of the Abitibi, Quebec, Canada, these unique calcite concretions were favoured by the local Algonquin peoples of the Harricana River. Various trade names for them include Clay Babies, Mud dogs and River biscuits. This last name reflects back to the Algonquin word for Harricana River, Nanikana, translated as “river of biscuts.” Depicting anthropomorphic and zoomorphic forms – meaning they can be seen as human or animal like forms – they have long been regarded as symbolic to those who find them. The Alogonquin thought that the stones brought health and longevity to the bearer. Lovers offered beautiful stones to their beloved and smaller stones were worn for luck. Strangely, it is colonies of micro organisms that are responsible for these wild little concretions. By decomposing organic matter in clay rich and oxygen deficient environments, micro-organisms contribute to the precipitation of calcium carbonate. In spring time, the colonies of micro-organisms reactivate and grow in response to the warmer ambient temperatures. At the end of the warm period the opposite occurs and the colonies go back into a dormant state. Growth. Rest. Growth. Rest. A natural rhythm resulting in organic forms which sometimes conjoin and layer. It’s been suggested that these micro-organisms live in symbiosis with the roots of aquatic plants as there exist root imprints on some pieces. Fairy stones provide an interesting opportunity to appreciate the rhythms of nature. They are treasured by collectors as rare and unique expressions of the mineral and fossil world.

Geologists believe that Fairy Stones may have formed under a glacier, which retreated thousands of years ago. These beautiful rocks were then carried by the water and deposited along the shores of lakes and rivers.

Available now in store at Gnostic Rocks from $9.95ea.

Ritual for Manifesting

By Rania Hamod Psychic Reader , Gnostic Forest

O

ne of the quickest and most powerful ways to manifest anything in life, is through divine intervention. When you ask, that is when you receive, it is only a matter of time. And the stronger your faith and belief, then the quicker you will manifest your desire. In most cultures, three is a very sacred and magical number. So in order to see the best results in life or in any ritual, three is a great number to work with. It represents creativity and growth; a complete cycle; mind, body and soul; past present future; and the holy trinity. So whether you ask three times, do things three times or give thanks three times, it will powerfully set the energy into motion for you to see. The Triple Goddess Sacred Prayer was channeled to me on Mother’s Day. It is a great prayer to help everyone in all areas of life. Connecting you with all that you love, protection and empowerment. So I hope it serves you well; and I recommend repeating this prayer daily three times.

YOGA

Yoga

The body-mind connection

T

he philosophy of yoga states quite clearly that the body and mind are not separate. Whatever happens in the body will be reflected in the mind, whatever happens in the mind will be reflected in the body. A person who is suffering from an emotionally traumatic experience will quite noticeably and unintentionally alter their physical posture in response to the mental trauma. The upper back will round, the shoulders rotate internally, they become stooped and very protective of the heart area. The physical reaction to emotional trauma blocks the flow of energy around the body. The blockage causes a stagnation in the body and further dis-ease or injury will follow or intensify. The body and mind permeate with energy which in yogic terms is referred to as prana which translates as life force or life energy. The concept of prana appears in all the body-mind modalities, “ki” as in Reiki and “chi” as in Tai Chi. Chakras (spinning wheels of energy) or energy centres comprise the model of the energetic and subtle body. This is where the vital life force (prana) gathers. They’re located along the spine from the pelvic floor to the crown of the head. Each has a specific colour and spiritual quality and are associated with a corresponding psychological, physical and emotional states necessary for the development of the “whole” person. The subtle energies of the body flow through the body via channels referred to as nadi’s which connect the chakras and move the energy. It’s very important to note that the concept of prana, chakras and nadis is subtle. You can’t go to the Doctor and ask to have your chakras X-rayed or scanned, they don’t exist in a physical realm. Hatha Yoga was developed with an intention to circulate, cultivate, control prana and

channel energy around the body. It’s much more than a form of exercise, much more than being physically strong or flexible. In the western world the ideals of yoga have been distorted and focus on contortions of very flexible bodies. Asana or yogic movement aims at creating, developing and distributing subtle energy around the body. The physical attributes are a very beneficial adjunct. The reason a yoga class is sequenced in a particular way, the length of time a pose is applied and counter poses that are practised is about energy control and movement. There’s a lot more happening rather than stretching muscles – think about the subtle effects – the inner-cise. Exercise the body (movement), Innercise the mind (mindfulness) and the prana (energy) will flow. Be gentle with yourself! John Wilson, www.peninsulayogacentre.com.au. John is a true local, having been a resident of the Woy Woy Peninsula for 30 years and has offered Yoga classes for over 10 years.

Keeping the faith

Not easy to have faith in the first place, keeping it is even harder.

Life seems to keep throwing a spanner in the works and of course we usually are our own worst enemy. Our minds and self-belief systems, either overt or hidden in our subconscious, can wreak havoc with our creations and direction. Then we lose faith. Having faith doesn’t mean that we don’t have to do our homework – the sometimes unpleasant facing of ourselves seeing all the parts we’d rather believe do not exist in us, for if we don’t do what must be done, reaching our highest will be near impossible. Many lose faith because it is results based. What our mind wishes or believes is happiness might not be correct at all, not aligned with the higher plan, so it doesn’t happen. Or sometimes it is just plain self-sabotage. Deep faith is absolute certainty, a knowing all through your being. When the notion that whatever is happening is for the highest good isn’t a theory but factual, a pure and simple reality.

But, how do we get to that point? Even if a great realisation happens, one of those amazing spiritual / religious experiences, still the everyday practice is necessary. Often it is an ongoing building up over a long time, like building a house, one brick at a time. Having many “proofs” along the way even if it is only in hindsight that we see that proof. Having faith means that we can relax with the full confidence that our needs will be met most appropriately, even if it isn’t in the way we were thinking or hoping. Ironically the more we relax into that knowing, the more we have peace which leads to more clarity which leads to an easier flow which leads to more faith: a very nice loop to get into. Trusting that God / the universe has everything well in hand and that it will only lead to the higher plan being fulfilled and therefore to great peace and joy.
