WORD SONG Suzie Palmer’s poetry offers us a fresh and optimistic perspective on life and nature

Poet Suzie Palmer inspires everyone she meets. Diagnosed with MS at 23, Suzie began to channel her energy into writing. A fascination with nature and a sense of universality shines through her work. Bright Blessings is her third anthology of poetry and includes a collection of haiku.

Riding on a branch Where are we going? Bird asks tree

You’ve also released two CDs, Bright Blessings, and Global Bright Blessings. They are poems which we’ve been performing around the community for a while, with Mike Glover on drums and a great guitarist, Greg Cole, who’s sadly no longer in the world. WHAT IS Gnostic CorneR?

W

hat began in 1998 as Gnostic Forest –- a small retail shop with a spiritual theme, selling crystals, jewellery, inspirational books and a bit of ethnic clothing – has grown into what is now known as Gnostic Corner. It’s a trading co-op with 10 businesses including, organics , a cafe, healing centre, yoga school, flower shop, angel and fairie shop, jewellery and crystals, hemp and bamboo clothing, a takeaway cafe along with the original Gnostic Forest. Each of the businesses has its own theme and is independently owned, we are all family or friends and we work together co-operating, not competing. We share resources and cross promote. In the 16 years we have grown as a destination for both the locals and the tourists. All of this during the GFC. While the rest of the world was worrying about how to survive, our small business collective was busy helping each other and creating a village atmosphere for our community to enjoy. The secret could be turning off the television and not reading the news papers, that way we didn’t know what to worry about and instead we could use our energy to help each other. If one of the younger businesses is struggling there is someone with more experience to mentor them and offer solutions. We also produce our own magazine quarterly to offer little pieces of inspiration and show what’s new on the corner. It all looks very deliberate, but the truth is it wasn’t! Just by having faith in a benevolent universe we are prepared to take risks and time has proven that by supporting the other guy we are really strengthening our entire field. – Mary Holstein

You have a strong sense of environmental and social justice. What issues are you involved with at the moment? I’m such an activist! Coal seam mining is ruining the world’s water supplies. Water is everything – people have to see that. And the destruction of the Great Barrier Reef has to be stopped. Your voice is so important. I rarely attend demonstrations due to the physical effort, but my voice is always strong. It still has a lot of impact. As they say ‘The greatest threat to the world is believing someone else will do it!’ What advice do you have for someone starting out writing poetry? Just allow it to come through. I let the rhyme write the poem, one line leads to the next line. I heard something I really liked about the ancient concept of Genius, which is very different to how people think of it today. The Romans saw it as external – outside of yourself, not inside. So if the poem fails, it’s not just my fault and if it succeeds, its not all me. Takes the pressure off and acknowledges that inspiration comes a higher source! What’s your next project? The poems don’t stop. I’m working with a friend in Saudi Arabia on a project, and continuing with my autobiography. I have done some work in schools and I’d love to do more. Come Fly with Me is a book I’m working on for young people about using your mind to fly no matter what your situation. You have said that your physical challenge has also been a blessing. Could you talk about that? There’s a Shastri who comes over from India to do Akashic record readings at Avoca. The Shastri interpret the ancient Sanskrit records. I met him in 1999 and asked him why I have MS and what would happen. He said “Nature has clipped your wings so you could re-remember what you’re here to do. Nature wants you to do the great work. Your brothers and sisters have their own wings, they can do what they like with their bodies, but nature had to stop you. Otherwise you would still be up every night dancing in night clubs, wouldn’t you? No – you have a mission.”

Field of Life Welcome to the playground of my mind To gather here our hearts will bind A visit oh so potentially divine Sublime, we chime, in time,we rhyme In the arena of the precious mind There are no limits There are no blights Creating our realities as we wish Ultimately, life manifests as we see fit The mind is fertile Profusely ripe Luscious soil to sow good light Tending to mind’s flowers, watch them grow In the field of life, let’s shine and glow.

I was thinking ‘Hey, not every night - maybe every second! But I totally understood about the mission. My autobiography is called Agony – A Path to Bliss. I know that it’s all one thing – pain and bliss. The flip side of the same coin. It makes you more human. I feel for people who aren’t aware of others – it’s like they haven’t woken up yet. Like when someone in front of you is driving slow, people get frustrated. But you don’t know what going on for them. They may have had a major diagnosis or maybe they’ve lost someone in this world. I love that quote: “People are rushing around, rushing around to be something that they’re not.” I mean, there’s no need to hurry – you’re already there! Don’t rush away from the moment. Patience and compassion are so important. I also think people with physical challenges shouldn’t necessarily be seen as more of an inspiration than anyone else. Just to live in this world and do something with it no matter what your situation, that’s inspiring.

Proceeds from the sale of Bright Blessings will help to fund Suzie’s upcoming Stem Cell therapy in Queensland. The book and CDs are available from Gnostic Forest.

MIND

HAPPILY AUTHENTIC Play to your strengths and increase your happiness!

I

n one of the early studies on happiness participants were instructed to identify five of their key personal strengths and to choose one as a focus for the experiment. Participants were then given the task of using that one strength more often and in new ways over the course of 7 days. The results of the study were surprising; not only did participants become happier during that week, but the happiness effect continued for up to six months with a decrease in depression and anxiety within the group. Most of us can relate to the idea of doing something different, learning a new skill or taking on a new job or joining a new social group and feeling a boost of happiness. The only difference here is that the participants did something quite deliberately and extended the opportunities to use a specific strength that they enjoyed using. They also focused their activities on that one strength. It occurs to me that this is what being authentic

means – what “being me” is really about: expressing myself through activities that are based on what I value about myself: strengths that I value in myself. Not all strengths are about being an elite athlete, a successful business person or a celebrity. The media and marketing world would have us believe that these are the only strengths that have any value. Of course the reverse is true. Some of the more subtle strengths that can be linked to happiness include: kindness, caring, courage, wisdom, perseverance, being encouraging, being witty, creativity, artistic expression, appreciating beauty in its many forms. The list is endless. The opportunity to be happier by expressing more of who we are is available. If you could do with a boost of happiness, perhaps this is the time to experiment again with using your strengths and using them in new, positive ways. The results could be happily surprising. BIG LOVE

I am small And I bless it GabrieLLA SALMON

T

here is adventure here. There is revelation written in the ordinary scroll of life. I used to be afraid of ‘normal’, of ‘everydayness’. For many seasons, I couldn’t shake the sneaking fear that to stay ‘stationary’ was to let my dreams die, slowly suffocating. I nursed a feverish need to be ‘big’, and bigger still, so that I could avoid the death that ‘small’ would surely bring. But I am small. And I bless it. I bless the fact that anything so wondrous, intricate, and as utterly expansive as the universe can be made manifest, and so lovingly experienced, through this infinitesimally small pinprick in the light of being that is me. I cannot escape such heart shaking perfection… And neither can I lose it. I stood today, watching 8-year-olds play marimbas with rubber mallets and the focused, awkward finesse that only children can bring to such a task… And my eyes washed themselves with happy. Days ago, I watched little piglets in sequinned vests wiggle their little piggy tails as they ran around and around, snout to tail, tail to snout… And it felt like Life was reminding me that it is only ever barely holding itself back from tripping over itself in glee. We forget, we seasoned adults we, we forget that we don’t know today. No matter how similar it may seem to yesterday, it is not. We have never been in exactly this point in the cosmic equation before, and never will be again. The clouds have never arranged themselves in your eyes in exactly this way before. The breeze is having this particular conversation with your skin for the first time. The first time. Our moments are snowflakes. Never before have I seen the day that is coming with the dawn. This is a life of ordinary miracles. Blessed are those who see.

TIPS FOR GNOSTIC TRAVELLERS After being aboard 42 airplanes last year, I can quite confidently say that I have become a very experienced “holistic” traveller. The upside of travel is the constant shift, leading to blissful new experiences, creative inspiration and the push to surrender to the fantastic flow of life. The down side is jet lag, emotional imbalance and physical discomforts such as poor digestion and hormonal irregularities. Thankfully when you embrace a more holistic way of life you have a giant tool box of remedies that can assist and even cure the associated ailments. Traveling is one of life’s greatest pleasures, so here’s some essentials for the wanderlust… Aromatherapy – Create your very own jet setting aromatic mist using pure essential oils of lime, rosemary, geranium and peppermint blended in a spray bottle using water and a dash of vodka to ensure that you feel refreshed, balanced and stress free during travel. To ease jetlag, anxiety and sleep disturbances use a blend of lavender, clary sage, chamomile and jasmine either in a massage or bath oil. Taking Fringed Violet and She Oak Bush Flower Essences are both beneficial for regular travellers. It is worthwhile to include a bottle of pure lavender essential oil in your travel first aid kit, helping to treat burns, bites, cuts and healing wounds. Airplane Food – This for me is priority. In my travel lunch box you will find bananas, apples,

tahini hummus dip, flax crackers, sliced carrots, raw chocolate, activated nuts, seeds, dried fruits and raw energy bars. If the flight is long haul I bring along a satchel bag of quick oats and ask for soy milk and honey on the plane. Making room for a container of precooked brown rice or quinoa with tamari soy sauce, sunflower seeds and olive oil is always winner! Coconut Water – An awesome vitamin and mineral rich beverage that is essential for hydration and electrolyte stability. Sipping on a coconut water pre and post flight is sure to revitalise your entire being. Move it – Exercising releases chemicals in your brain that help to reduce stress, therefore you will be much more relaxed and rejuvenated after going for a brisk walk or taking a yoga class prior to the upcoming day spent in the sky. CHILD

EARLYMUSIC Music brings a sense of joy, love and wonder which we can pass on to our little ones.

W

e are starting to understand more about how music can benefit babies, toddlers and preschoolers with every aspect of their development. Music teaches us about steady beat – vital for balance, co-ordination, walking even. Music helps us interact – we can play instruments to-

gether and share them. Songs and rhymes help with language. Singing together helps us have a conversation and these shared experiences are an important life tool. As an early childhood music educator, I am in the humbling and privileged position to foster a deep and lifelong love of music in children. Starting as babies means that music becomes an intrinsic part of life. Kindermusik classes are designed specifically to help with cognitive, physical, language, social, emotional, and musical development. There is also a strong movement aspect to the class, to help little brains absorb information. Music is like a soul superfood, and we can encourage our children from the very earliest age to nurture this part of their spirit. What better way to contribute to a peaceful world than help – with parents being the main example – to create contented children. Sally Maer holds an Honours Degree and Teaching Diploma from The Royal Academy of Music in London and is a licensed Kindermusik Educator. Sally runs MAESTRO POSSUMS with her saxophonist husband, JP Fleury.

ONE DAN BAND

PHOTO: LISAHAYMES.com

What was it like playing in the family band? That was back in Gilgandra. My sister played keys, my mother sang and my step dad was on bass. A couple of teachers from school joined to play guitar. At the time it seemed a bit like a chore – band practice instead of hanging out with your mates. But it was Gilgandra – what else are you going to do… go out on the farm and blow stuff up? Looking back it was great experience. I left to study for a Bachelor of Music at AIM, majoring in audio engineering. I was playing in a couple of bands, studying, pouring beers… You play a wide range of instruments on the EP. When did you start to branch out from playing drums? It was a natural progression. And you know there’s also that thing where if you’re a drummer, you’re not really a muso… So I just taught myself along the way. Like for this new recording, there’s cello and violin on some of the tracks. I’d pick up an instrument and play it till I got the sound I wanted. You’re living in a magic spot up here, overlooking Parks Bay. Has that helped with inspiration? It’s given me the opportunity to stay creative, dedicated and loyal to writing music. When you have access to a recording studio that has awesome views over the water, slightly isolated and that is always set up and ready to rock, it’s not hard to stay creative. If you had to categorise your music, what box would you put it in? I’ve been waiting till the EP comes out for other people to tell me that! Experimental Rock

maybe? Definitely not Pop, not the verse, bridge, chorus structure. What kind of music do you listen to? All kinds, from jazz to heavy metal. When writing or mixing music for a long period of time, I often use music to “clear my ears.” Like when mixing a heavy rock song, after a few hours your ears will start to get less responsive to the sound. So to refresh my ears I’ll put on something completely different in style, tone and mood. It’s like looking

at a bright light… your eyes get sore looking at the light and can’t see anything surrounding it. So you look away at something different to refocus your eyes. Same with music. What are your songs about? The process of thinking and getting your perspective right on life. Accepting yourself and others. Music is a great way of exploring the ups and downs of life without taking it out on yourself in other ways. Has the process been hard – writing, playing, recording, mixing – all yourself? Well, it’s not about achieving perfection. I don’t really believe in perfection in anything in this world. I love experimenting. And it’s not perfect – it’s raw, it’s what I’m doing right now.

EXPLORING TAO W

e gather once a month at the Gnostic Forest to explore the ancient classic, Tao Te Ching. Lao Zi's words may be simple and succinct but they are profound and just as relevant now as they were 2,600 years ago. Chapter 4: Tao is void, thus can be used and yet it never can be filled Oh! It is the unfathomable source of all things Blunt the sharpness, unravel the tangles Soften the glare, merge with dust Like deep water, it is still and seemingly present I do not know whose child it is but it seems to be the predecessor of all gods Here Lao Zi recognises Tao as the source of creation and describes this boundless essence as void. He then guides us to connect with it. We all have sharp edges that can be rounded off with tempering and self-restraint; entanglements in our hearts that require patience and perseverance to unravel. We can soften the glare of our light by remaining humble instead of being self-righteous. Instead of trying to escape from the dusty, impure world, we can transcend it by transforming impurities into nutrients for our spiritual growth. Such is the challenge of spiritual practice in current times. The Tao that permeates the universe also exists within us. Like deep water it is perfectly still, yet hidden beneath the waves, tides and currents. Mysterious and yet to be completely understood and manifested.

art@MANA

Gnostic Mana Cafe features monthly exhibitions from the Central Coast’s leading artists. OCTOBER: James Mosely

My art is all from imagination. The paint goes on with cloth, sea, sky or land appears. It is a strange and bewildering process. Enjoy.

NOVEMBER: Gypsy During the month of November, local artist Gypsy Artemis (formerly Kim Ryder) merges her two passions: art and death. Gypsy is curating the exhibition titled End of Life which will include some of her own works, as well as works submitted by the community. The show falls in the same month as the Day of the Dead Community Picnic, so works will continue along the theme of exploring our own mortality to enhance our finite lives. DECEMBER: Peter Baka and Sophie Pearce Peter Baka has been constructing and painting artworks in and about the local area for over thirty years. His quirky, skilful and often beautiful paintings and sculptures reflect an engagement with the natural environment as well as eye to our human foibles. As a full-time artist whose work is represented in major collections and galleries, Baka considers his smaller works (as represented in this show) to be some of his more enjoyable creations. Found objects, synochronistic vistas, natural wood and his steady love of oil colour, all combine in an enthusiastic homage to life and art in these recent works. Reluctant exhibitor, Sophie Pearce has been coaxed out of hiding to reveal her latest closet productions. Based on her love of the bush, in its particularity of expression, Pearce also brings a strong sense of human emotion to bear in this collection of warmly coloured, figurative oil paintings.

WISEGUYS

EMPTY YOUR CUP Nan-in, a Japanese master during the Meiji era (1868-1912), received a learned university professor who came to inquire about Zen. Nan-in served tea. He poured his visitor’s cup full, and then kept on pouring. The professor watched the overflow until he no longer could restrain himself. “It is overfull. No more will go in!” “Like this cup,” Nan-in said, “you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?”

W

hoa back, party people – this isn’t like doing shots! The metaphor for emptying your cup allows a lovely space inside your mind for “not knowing”. It’s totally okay not to know stuff. There-in lies the space for observing, learning and being *gasp* vulnerable to your own non-expertness! Yes, you may NOT know it all yet. Be open to the idea that you still may have lots to learn. We seem to endlessly fill our minds with information, sometimes unnecessary info, usually about other people. For me, at times, intentions of being well informed have given way to a sponge like voyeurism for Other People’s Stuff. I have fallen down a “click-hole” for a few hours here and there, bouncing down a rabbit hole of opinion or mindlessness. What we choose to participate in online and socially has an effect on our mind and colours our feelings. There’s a Polish idiom that I’ve recently come across. Nie mój cyrk, nie moue malpy. It translates to: “not my circus, not my monkey;” figuratively, “not my problem.” G

22

It’s all too easy to get caught up in things that really have no effect on our lives. For my own mental health I’ve started to divide things in this way. Drama is an all too common lure. “Worry,” says my brother’s friend Puddin, “is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do, but you don’t get anywhere.” Wise dude, huh? With this new found mental space, what will you do? I’ve found that my time has become more free. I seek out subjects of interest online, not passive experience of voyeurism *cough cough facebook* I’ve begun to enjoy sitting quietly somewhere sunny with tea and just being there. Nowhere else, just there. If not being passively (or willingly, for the drama monkeys) full of Other People’s Stuff in your mental sphere, what might you choose to fill it with? What effect might that have on your body, mind and soul? Remember my loves, “Not my Circus, Not my Monkeys!” Emily believes there is a world beyond ideas she has already had. She says “Don’t believe everything you click. Don’t click on everything you believe.”

DRISHTI: Gazing outward while bringing awareness inward

W

hen you’re practicing Yoga postures do you keep your eyes open or do you tend to close them? If your eyes are open where are you looking? What are you doing with your eyes? Are you checking out the moves of the really bendy person 3 mats in front of you? Are you looking out the window doing a quick weather check? The possibilities are endless. If you close your eyes during practice or at any other time have you noticed how easy it is to daydream? At the heart of yoga practice is the premise of controlling, slowing down or stopping the constant fluctuations of your mind. If your gaze is not softly focused your thoughts will be distracted by external influences and your ability to consciously move your body will be diminished. Body/ Mind connections are unobtainable if you can’t turn your senses inward. Your gaze is a reflection of the quality of your thoughts! Ideally your eyes should be open and your gaze directed towards a specific focal point, Focused gaze or Drishti develops an intention of concentration and helps the practitioner turn inward as one of the senses, sight is withdrawn. If your eyes are darting around the room during practice you’re scattering your energy. Wherever your gaze is directed your attention naturally follows! Your Yoga Teacher will point out specific drishti or soft gaze points in each pose which will help aid your concentration. — John Wilson, www.peninsulayogacentre.com.au

here’s nothing that quite compares to a homemade, flame grilled hamburger – seasoned just right, on a lightly toasted bun, mustard, sauce, fresh lettuce and tomato and of course, a pickle. Finding such a burger these days, however, can be difficult. The pressure to produce a quick feed often compromises the final product. Its no surprise that the team at Gnostic Mana Cafe and Gnostic Mini Mana love a decent meal. And why should a take away meal, a classic burger, hot dog or fish and chips be any exception? So, when the former Tucker Shack on the Boulevarde in Woy Woy went on the market, how could they resist? Drawing on his experience from time spent in Canada, Jake set about creating Boulevarde Burgers (with a little help from the rest of the Mana team). North America love their burgers. Whether you’re in the States or Canada, finding a burger isn’t hard. But something that bugged Jake G

26

while travelling was the sacrifices made to quality for speedy turn over or profit. For some time he had been determined to bring home his ideas on how to produce quality burgers without cutting corners on Jake Holstein produce or taste. “We’ve teamed up with local suppliers Edwards Family Butchery and the Bakehouse Bakery – all within 200 metres of us – to put the focus back on top quality ingredients.” says Jake. “We make all own patties, pickles, sauces, scallops, batters and schnitzel so we can make sure of the best taste every time. “We also go the extra mile using Rice Bran oil in our fryers which is free from cholesterol and trans fats. A take away meal doesn’t have to compromise healthy eating.” Boulevarde Burgers is open Tuesday to Sunday, right opposite the Gnostic Mana cafe on the Boulevarde in Woy Woy.

The Art of Spontaneous Travel By Lauren (Monty) montgomery

our months ago I packed my life into a backpack and caught a one way flight to Kathmandu Nepal with no real plan. I had a vague outline (or so I thought) of where I was going and in what order – five weeks in Nepal then head to India – after which I would make my way through South East Asia before flying to London. The main thing I have learnt along the way is “letting go brings things closer”. You see I hadn’t realized it, but my mind had latched on to these ‘vague plans’. As soon as I let go of needing to know where I was going, when and how I was getting there – that’s when the real magic started to happen. A snap decision in Nepal saw me letting go of India being my next destination and booking a flight to Bangkok where I spent an incredible four weeks exploring the North of Thailand. One day, sitting in a cafe in Chiang Mai, I was fretting over the next destination…“Can we afford to go to London? Is that the most logical step?” my mind was saying. I took a deep breath and let go. Next thing I knew, a beautiful girl

Trekking the Dhampus trail in Pokhara, Nepal

came and sat next to me who happened to be from London. She offered me a place to stay and the possibility of work when I got there. “Thanks Universe!” So 2 weeks later I found myself flying to Heathrow airport London. Each time I find myself ready to move on, I let go and see what the Universe brings. I am constantly surprised and reminded that we are eternally supported – all we have to do is surrender. G
