‘Terrigal’ side table
Piles of old pallets, fence palings and cable reels are stacked around the Berkelyvale workshop, raw materials for Dave Lowe’s beautiful handcrafted furniture. His work has simple, elegant lines which allow the rustic nature of the timber to shine through.
“I
’m a carpenter/joiner by trade. My grandfather was a builder, so my interest came from working with him as a kid back in the eighties. Since finishing my apprenticeship in 2000, I’ve had a lot of experience working on kitchens and hotel fitouts. I made the first pallet bed as a personal project eighteen months ago and posted it on Facebook. It got 450 likes overnight. From there I started getting 2 or 3 orders a week. I love working with old wood and the way it comes up. It’s all central coast timber so I name a lot of the items to reflect that – The ‘Berkeley’, ‘Morriset’ and ‘Ettalong’. I like to use local products to style my work as well. I’ve also started making tables out of cable
reels, with fence palings bases. There’s a fair amount of sanding and labor involved, recessing all the nails and screws, but they look great once they’re oiled up. Come summer time, perfect for sitting around with friends and a few beers. G

Recently I worked on the Gnostic Villagewear shop in Woy Woy – counters, tables and a massive mirror. It was great to use this style through the whole space. I’ve got three daughters and they love coming out to the workshop. I’ve made some fun things like a little modular kitchen set and a sandpit that opens up into seats. I’m interested in making a range of floating beds out of recycled Merbau, Blackbutt and Oregon to offer some more options. A lot of people think there’s a whole team up here at the factory, and they comment on Facebook, ‘Good on you, guys’, which is funny because it’s just me! I might need to put someone on soon, but I don’t want to get massive. I’d rather make fewer pieces and keep the quality going.”
See more on Dave’s Facebook page, ‘Pallet House Central Coast.’ Also look out for him at Shelly Beach Markets.

GNOSTICBLEND
The quest for the perfect coffee led Gnostic Mana’s Caleb Holstein to create a new blend.
“W
e spent six months flavour profiling at the Green Markets in Sydney to get this right. It was all blind tastings, so we weren’t swayed by any preconceptions or exotic names – it’s about the flavour. Most of our customers here on Gnostic Corner are milk based drinkers so we were looking for a full bodied, dark roast blend, designed to fill every part of your mouth. We also wanted a product that we could have a connection to and understand the region and farms it comes from. We’ve been able to do that now. Coffee is very volitile – if you have a coffee less than seven days after roasting, it can be inconsistent. We’re roasting more beans now and cellaring them to get the result we’re after. The reaction has been great. We started with a silent entry across all three stores, and within the first week customers were coming up and saying,’Hey, you’ve got an awesome barrista on today!’ We’re excited to let everyone know that this is our new product.”

Larger infinities

There is a larger infinity of numbers between zero and two than there is between zero and one
CHILDREN ´/LIWLQJ
A larger infinity. What sorcery is this? What sorcery is this that expands the infinite?! Simple maths. Expanding infinity is simple, apparently. All it takes to expand infinity, to make the space between here and there bigger than the infinity between there and there is to add one. You are one. Oh glorious integer, you are one! With the addition of you, our infinity is larger!

You are the beginning, the addition, the expansion from which a new infinity of possibilities trail... You are 1... And, in that moment you grew, you became 1.1 And then, in the growth that sprouted from the branch of that growth, you became 1.11 as well.... And 1.1 with six trillion additions… Not even in a whole lifetime devoted to knowing your figure would I reach the end of these possible combinations. One point one, one point one one, one point one one one... You are infinite before we even get to two.

EXPLORETAO Thirty spokes share the wheel’s hub; It is the emptiness within that makes the vehicle useful. Shape clay into a vessel; It is the emptiness within that makes the vessel useful. Cut doors and windows to make a room; It is the emptiness within that makes the room useful. Therefore, benefit is derived from somethingness; Usefulness is derived from nothingness. — Lao Zi, Tao Te Ching, Chapter 11
In a world where materialism reigns supreme, we often forget it is the immaterial which creates usefulness in all things of creation. If there is no space for the spokes to be connected with the hub of a vehicle’s wheel, the vehicle will become inoperable. If there is no void in a vessel, the vessel will be a mere solid object that serves no function. If a room is not empty but full of stuff, it will be rendered useless despite having doors and windows.
Our heart and mind works in the same manner. By living a busy life pursuing abundance, people constantly occupy their hearts and minds with objects of pursuit, including thoughts which are illusory and lacking in substance. As a result, their hearts and minds become non-responsive, solidified and disconnected from the core of their inner spirit. Emptying the heart and mind is therefore the first step to restore the true functions of the spirit that is void, responsive and illuminating. The challenge of living life in the modern age lies in developing the ability and skill to constantly declutter the inner space which is easily filled up with emotional and material attachments. So it is time to let go and get rid of the inner clutter! Exploring Tao meets once a month at the Gnostic Forest. Please contact deliciousveg@gmail for further inquiries.

DO YOU REALLY GNOSIS?
nosis is the experience of knowing. The word comes from ancient Greece, where to have gnosis about anything meant you had to have personal experience. Forget what the tabloids tell you – in ancient Greece it was the tablets. And the things the guy at the Parthenon told you were just his ideas. You don’t know any of it because you haven’t witnessed it. So switch on your own watcher and explore your life, being aware of your own experience. Ask yourself the question “What do I really know?” You may be surprised how many of the things that motivate your behaviour are based on opinions rather than gnosis. – MH

SOULSPEAK
In the interests of sharing knowledge learned through experience (Gnosis) we interview people from all beliefs to share insights from their path. May we all learn and grow together in peace.
Togh Main Cambodia
What are your spiritual understandings and were they taught to you by your family? I am a practicing Buddhist and believe in helping others and living a good honest life. When I was 11 years old my grandmother died and it was my families wish that I join the Pagoda and participate in the funeral. This is also our traditional culture when a family member passes away; generally one son joins the Pagaoda as a Monk for a short time to help their loved one transition onto the next life.
Do you know anything about your ancestor’s spiritual beliefs? When I was young my grandfather told me a lot of stories about spirit life and taught me some words from the Sanskrit language, this is a special secret language for holy people. When he was alive my grandfather was very special and he had a strength spirit and he was respected by many people. What you think the purpose of your life is? After my grandmother died, I joined the Pagoda to be a Monk for a short time. When I put on the monks robes I felt very peaceful and comfortable and decided to stay at the Pagoda and live the life of a monk. In 2004 my friend Rathana Nn and I started a school in a poor community to teach children English and Cambodian Buddhist Morals to help them to create a better life. Because so many children came to us wanting to learn I decided to disrobe so that I could focus on the school and community projects. G
13
SOULSPEAK How do you feel and react when you see sadness or suffering in the world? I feel sad because it reminds me of when I was a kid in a poor rural family. When I see suffering and sadness it makes me want to continue to work hard to help the Cambodian people.
Where do you think that suffering comes from? It can come from lack of education, poverty or violence within the family. This can also come as a result of war or corruption. When people live in a negative environment they can lose hope in the future and stop trying to improve their lives.
What type of work do you do? I am the Director of a very special organization called Volunteer Development Children’s Association (VDCA). The school was started by me and my friend Rathan Nn in 2004 and we taught lessons to children in a thatched hut underneath a house in the village. Over time foreign visitors came to the school and became involved in fundraising and volunteering. In 2006 we had raised enough funds to build a permanent school which is the current location behind Wat Thmei in Siem Reap. In 2007 Rathana passed away in a car accident, so I took over as Director of the school. VDCA continues to help to educate almost 1000 children and young adults at VDCA Siem Reap and Anlung Pi Free Schools. We also have community development projects
(Building Together in Cambodia) at Anlung Pi and we assist poor rural families with microfinance loans to help them start businesses to support their families.
What do you hope your work will achieve? My dream is to help my fellow Cambodians to have access to education, healthcare and to live healthy and productive lives while preserving their cultural beliefs and identity. If you would like to learn more about the Organization and our projects, please email me or visit our website: www.vdca-cambodia.org. Email: info@vdca-cambodia. org or togh@vdca-cambodia.org

MEDITATE against it. You no longer settle for your old story. Begin to live from the deepest part of the self.
steps toward inner peace 1. Be Still Find time each day to enter a place of stillness and by stillness I mean meditation. Meditation is a fantastic tool to create more peace within your life. It gets you out of mind and your story. When the busy mind and your story subside the true essence of self will emerge, this part of the self is who you truly are. Many people upon this planet live within their mind, dwelling on the past and worried sick about the future, completely dominated by their story which they have created. They lose themselves within this foggy haze. Through meditation you rediscover self – you learn to observe your thoughts and work with your mind not
S

2. Be Aware Bring awareness into every aspect of your life. Have a deep look into how you treat your body, mind and soul. All these aspects of self are as important as each other and work magnificently when firing as one. Many people upon this planet live their lives with very little awareness, giving very little attention to what they’re thinking, saying and doing. As your awareness expends through observation of the self, you’ll bring a whole new state of beingness to the table. 3. Be Present Wherever you are, BE totally there. What’s happening tomorrow is of no concern, what happened yesterday is of no concern. Many people upon this planet spend the majority of their life trying to get somewhere, never realizing that they have always been there. What’s happening right now within this very moment is golden and is where the truth lies. Treat each moment as if you have chosen it. Owen Maher runs meditation classes @ Gnostic Forest.

RITES
BLESSED IS THE BLOOD Reclaim the Rite
F
or the past eighteen months I have been exploring women’s blood mysteries; the interconnectedness of the seasonal, lunar, life and menstrual cycles, and the importance of rites of passage. Our first rite of passage is our own birth, the second is our menarche, or onset of menstruation. What we know about rites of passage is that how our culture responds to them, or not, conveys messages about the life phase we are about to move into. In relation to our menarche, for example, if our family, friends and culture failed to truly acknowledge and celebrate this transition from maidenhood to womanhood, we may have learnt that womanhood, and the next phase of life which is motherhood, is not truly valued in our culture. We may also have taken on some disempowered beliefs, and even shame, about what it means to bleed each month, and thus failed to embrace our immense power and innate feminine wisdom! Basically we may have failed to recognise the blessings that our monthly blood can bring us. Thankfully, during a shamanic drum journey, I received a bit of a download about how I could help women heal, or reclaim, their menarche. Since that time, I have run workshops with women from all walks of life, and have had the pleasure of witnessing them revisit their menarche, and re-write their script about what it means to be a woman. The process has been so profound that some of the women described it as “life changing”, and one women said she “pulled back the curtain to the shameful thirteen year old”. The reclamations ranged from “I am a full power, anything’s possible woman!” to “Your body, Your mind, Your rules, Your choice to always be respected.”
As a shamanic midwife and mother, I cannot help but imagine the amazing changes that could occur if all women reclaimed this important rite of passage in this way. The impact on our ability to birth our babies from an empowered place, mother our children, honour ourselves and the sisterhood would be immense. With this intent I continue to bring my Menarche Reclamation work to our community, with the offering, Blessed is the Blood. WISEGUYS “Master?” asked a Zen student, “I have an uncontrollable temper. Can you help me overcome it?” “That is strange. Can you show it to me?” asked the master. “Not right now.” “Why not?”
“It occurs suddenly.”
THE DELUSION OF ANGER…
T
onight I was an idiot. I didn’t do something I should have (think locking something that needs to be locked). As a result my tired self needed to retrace my steps over an hour to remedy the mistake. My mistake. Along the back tracking I projected into all the things that SHOULD have been. Why didn’t so and so call me? Why won’t so and so pick up their phone? Why did we walk THAT way? All the while not owning my own mistake and trying instead to deflect it on to someone else. I generated a huge amount of suffering (upset, dissatisfaction, anger etc) within myself. The reality stayed the same. Although I was taking steps to remedy the problem, the solution got no closer by my agonising about it. Upon arriving at the scene I also arrived at the fact it was indeed my mistake. Now I attacked myself! Anger, why hadn’t I been mindful enough to lock it? Shame, that someone else had seen and discovered my mistake. Fear, what of something terrible had happened and it was *gasp* all my fault?? While I was angry I was acting irrationally, making myself sick to the stomach and generally

“Then it cannot be a part of your true nature,” said the master. “If that were the case, you would not have any difficulty in showing me! Why do you allow something that isn’t yours to worry you?”
From that time on the master’s words would come back to the student whenever her temper rose. Soon she learned to check her anger and developed her inner peace. not having much fun. This continued as I filled myself with shame. It wasn’t until I returned home to make myself some comforting thing and spilt it everywhere that I broke the spell… In truth, I was the creator of all of it. The initial problem, the judgements, the annoyance, the suffering. Anger is, often times a delusion. We create it by thinking that things should be different or other rather than accepting things as they are. Taking personal responsibility for your experience of reality is both a liberating and sobering game. The learning is relentless in life. What we can do is be reflective to the malleable parts, such as needless, self induced suffering. As for remembering to lock doors… That’s mindfulness and I’ll leave that till next mag! When not getting angry at herself, Emily practices compassion at various Gnostic shops.

s the “selfie era” destroying the credibility of Yoga? Every picture I see or commentary I read relating to Yoga seems to depict a sports model dressed in lycra, a bikini or less displaying some seemingly impossible act of physical contortion. Nude Classes have even been touted as a legitimate form of Yoga! What a completely unrealistic and distorted approach to a 5000 year old spiritual philosophy! It’s actually an offensive and disrespectful ego driven interpretation of an ancient lineage. There is no special yoga clothing, shoes, hairstyle, jewellery or trendy accessories. The practices are not gender specific. Your size, shape, mobility or fitness is irrelevant. If you practice the physical form of yoga (asana) you’re not expected to make a perfect “text book” shape or put yourself into a position that resembles something you might see in a circus act. It’s not about how you look in the pose, it’s about your journey through the pose and how it makes you feel. There seems to be an obsession with practicing very fast sequences in yoga. Yoga isn’t meant to be practiced quickly. It’s mindful movement not an eighties aerobic class. The effect of the “selfie” is that people are being placed into positions that their body is simply not ready for or capable of, the result is hyperventilation or physical injury. The wellness benefits of yoga movement are enormous provided the poses are being practiced mindfully and correctly. The benefits diminish if the poses are practiced incorrectly. Don’t get caught up in “selfie” pursuit of unrealistic perfection. The ancient sages developed the philosophy of yoga as a form of mind control. They weren’t considering how to pose correctly for the latest yoga journal. Keep it real!

amethyst
Coveted by kings and queens and sought by high priests, magicians, monks and bishops for thousands of years, there is no doubt that if amethyst were harder to find it would be very expensive indeed!
The ColOR Though amethyst is often gray or colourless, it is definitely the colour purple that we immediately associate with it. Essentially, amethyst is clear quartz which, in common with many of the world’s most beautiful gemstones, contains impurities of other minerals which are responsible for the colour. In this case manganese and iron oxide (Fe2O3 ) are present. The greater the concentration of iron, the more intense the purple colour. An interesting phenomenon is the impact of heat on amethyst. Heat will influence the oxidation state of the iron impurities present and the colour will change accordingly. The source of heat may either be artificial or the result of natural thermal activity, but the effect is the same. In some instances heating can turn amethyst green as well (known as either green amethyst or prasiolite), though this is very uncommon in nature. Sunlight is known to cause amethyst to fade to clear. metaphysical properties Amethyst is a calming and soothing stone with a sobering, down to earth aspect. Tibetan Buddhists dedicate it to the Buddha and often fashion Mala Beads from it with the belief that it creates the clarity of mind required for the spiritual journey. Indeed, it is valued as an aid in meditation. It is said to guide us towards our highest ideals, transforming lower vibrations into higher ones, while maintaining a sense of composure, strength and serenity. Its soothing nature coupled with its tendency towards fairness and patience make amethyst a useful tool for reconciliation, promoting compassion, empathy and understanding. Not only is this beneficial in relationships, but it also G

A hot, over-emotional temperament may find some peace and contentment with amethyst’s help. The amethyst “flowers”, produced from slices of stalactites, are said to carry a sense of lightness and lovingness. It is said that placing it under one’s pillow helps lull one to sleep. Its ancient reputation for neutralizing the effects of alcohol still stands amongst modern holistic healers who recognize its benefits in helping to overcome addictions, be it to alcohol, drugs or anything else. Amethyst opens the crown chakra, clears the aura and protects against psychic attack. When combined with chlorite it can be used to cleanse both the physical body and aura of unwanted energy. It has been used to treat disorders of the nervous and digestive systems, to help with hearing disorders and to improve and strengthen posture. It is also said to relieve headaches and arthritis pain. There is a material side to amethyst as well, its deep and passionate colour said to promote prosperity. Amethyst is the anniversary gemstone for the 4th, 6th and 17th years of marriage. It relates to the horoscopes of Pisces, Virgo, Aquarius and Capricorn and vibrates to the number 3. EAT
CHIA PUDDING MAKES 6 PORTIONS
• 1 cup Chia seeds • Vanilla seeds to taste • 1 can Coconut milk • 1 can Coconut cream • 1 tin mixed fruit in juice
Breakfast@GnosticManaCafe
This refreshing pudding is simple and delicious – a great way to start the day. Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor and blitz on high for 2–3 minutes till it begins to thicken (when the science happens!). Pour mixture into 6 small jars or ramekins. Refrigerate for 6 hours before serving. We like ours for breakfast, topped with a berry compote and fried banana on the side.
Chia seeds are one of the world’s oldest sources of nutrition, eaten by the Aztecs and Mayans as early as 3500 BC. The seed was highly valued for the stamina and endurance it offered athletes and warriors. The name ‘chia’ literally translates to ‘strength’ in Mayan. Chia is loaded with fibre, protein, Omega-3 fatty acids and micro-nutrients. Organic Chia seeds are available from Gnostic Organics. G

Gnostic Mana Cafe features monthly exhibitions from the Central Coast’s leading artists. JUNE: Karen Adler Karen Adler came to art late in her life after a long search for her place in the world. The arts have helped her in innumerable ways, saved her sanity on many occasion, and have contributed to her love of the world’s beauty. Karen studied a B. Fine Art at the National Art School in Sydney, majoring in photography. Her love of the arts and her recognition of their powerful healing properties lead to her studies in Transpersonal Art Therapy. Karen has exhibited in Australia and Scotland and is also a qualified Dogographer. Website: www.thejourneyjournal.webs.com Email: karenadler222@gmail.com JULY: James Mosely I have been painting for around 5 years. I paint flat on an old table and mainly use cloth. A combination perhaps of imagination and feeling. Painting gives me peace and refuge from the world. I find it difficult to talk about my art as it just seems to evolve, sometimes easily, sometimes with great difficulty. I hope it stirs a reaction; pleasure, memory, odd, beautiful, what the hell is that!? Enjoy your great coffee.
AUGUST: Remona Hayes I started painting in my twilight years when I arrived on the Central Coast 13 years ago. Without local friends I felt the need to integrate with my community, and attended art classes. Since then my artworks have steadily improved. Through my art I have met some wonderful interesting people and they in turn have inspired me to continue doing something I have a passion for. Art is learning with constant improvments. Buildings, landscapes and animals are my favourite subjects.

TRAVEL: UK
The magnificent Isle of Skye, which takes its name from the old Norse sky-a meaning ‘cloud island’.
H
ow often do you hear someone say “I have always wanted to go to Italy”, or Greece, or South America. We don’t know why, we are just drawn to go… a deep yearning within us to visit a particular place in the World. I had been experiencing a very strong calling to visit the UK but I fought this desire for three whole years. I had no valid reason to go and, being one of nine children, had never done anything on my own, ever! However, every time I saw a castle on TV or heard a Scottish accent, etc., I was reminded of my yearning and I knew I had to follow that persistent voice inside me so I booked my flight for April Fool’s Day, as my folly was to be a true journey into the unknown. My one and only plan was my first two nights accommodation, which I had pre-booked in Oxford. From that point on it was a day by day adventure of asking Spirit “Where am I meant to go?” I would read about a village or a stone circle or someone would randomly mention a sacred well and I just knew that this destination was next. For six weeks I drove around England, Wales and Scotland, going as far north as the Orkneys Islands. Out of the car I would hop, boots on and walk… and walk, through people’s farms, along coastal headlands, on boats, up mountains, around lakes and through churches and graveyards. It proved to be an amazing trip. I had incredible experiences in so many places; smells, sights, sounds, the dreadful cold,
all of these provoked changes in me in those moments. Often for 5, 10 or 30 minutes I was no longer myself; I was thrown into past life memories and time seemed not to exist. During these experiences I knew who I had been and what I had been going through. In one of my happiest moments I was on a farm, by the sea on the Isle of Skye, freezing and soaked with the blistering wind and rain but consumed by a joy I had no words to describe. In experiencing these past lives I gathered lost parts of me. Quite evidently, lots of energetic clearing and lots of healing occurred. By the time I came home, I felt like someone had puttied up and smoothed over any little holes I had had. I felt whole in every sense of the word. At the same time though, I felt like a completely different person. My journey and what I saw and felt took me completely by surprise. I really did not expect to have past life memories, nor feel so different. I was raised in a large Catholic family and have two science degrees so new age spirituality was never a part of my world. However, this scientist has experienced her evidence first hand. So, listen to your soul and be guided. You cannot judge what you don’t know and you will never know until you try. Julie Wall moved to the Central Coast from Balmain in 2010 and has worked on Gnostic Corner for three years. G

RUNES: ANCIENT ALPHABET
With their roots in almost 2000 year old Germanic culture, (yes, including the Norse Vikings) Rune stones have a varied and highly debated set of origins.
What is known is that it developed as a 24 character written alphabet called the Futhark around 100 A.D. The archaeological information we have around Runes tells us the inscriptions were used for healing, banishing, memorial purposes or to identify something as a magical object. There is a myth, according to the Norse beliefs, that the god Odin discovered the runes as he hung himself from the Yggdrasil (world tree) for nine days. During this deprivation ordeal he fasted and stared down into the well of Urd where he perceived the Runes.
Nowdays Runic oracles are derived from our understanding of the symbols meanings as popularised by the Ralph Blume publications from the 80’s. Each stone’s inscriptions are said to signify a “symbolic storehouse” and is said to be a magical talisman all of its own to help us understand the subtle forces at play in our lives. Methods for casting and understanding the inscriptions, some symbolising Ice, Fertility, Strength etc are various. We encourage anyone drawn to the Runes to explore the many resources available and to trust their inner gnosis when using any divination technique.

Planetary Influences for JUNE, JULY & AUGUST 2015
Jennifer has been an Astrologer for 24 years (FAA Certificate) and is at Gnostic Forest on Fridays.
As the year moves on, the earth continues its orbit around the sun. This natural progression changes our position in relation to the other planets and the following influences occur…
JUNE
JULY
AUGUST
Feeling overwhelmed, confused, treading water, going nowhere fast? Tap into your creative imagination, which can increase your sensitivity so you are able to perceive very subtle ideas and thoughts to help you overcome these initial feelings. This will help you to clear up any misunderstandings with past relationships. There are exciting opportunities awaiting as you are feeling committed and determined to work through these issues with a different approach and without feeling resentful.
You need to have a very open and generous point of view in order to free yourself from feeling you are a failure. You may be forced to let go of goals...but by letting go you will find you can open up new doors for your future in a positive way. You could be forced to confront the unconscious areas of your psyche to give you a way to heal past wounds. Cultivate detachment and don’t become so wrapped up in your emotions that you can’t see beyond them.
Difficulties in your personal life and responsibilities may cause some tension that require some logical thinking. Business plans may make you feel nervous and on edge. Slow down and relax. Take the time to carefully plan ahead. Trust your gut when communicating with people as there could be some deception that will only confuse you more. There is a strong desire to help those less fortunate than yourself, although be careful of striving for perfection.
