INTERVIEW

SOUND HEALER

Sound has been used in different cultures for thousands of years as a tool for healing. Chaitanyashree speaks with us about his work with Singing Bowls. What is it that you do? I work with sound, especially with singing bowls. I help my clients to raise their vibrations by releasing physical and energetic blockages, mental stress and emotional imbalances.

What are the origins of Singing Bowl healing? It originates from the Himalayas, but was also used during the time of Lord Buddha and this is why singing bowls are often called ‘Tibetan bowls’. The exact timeframe of when singing bowls were used for healing purposes dates back to the shamanistic rituals of the Bon tradition in Nepal.

How did you personally become involved? I was born to be a sound healer. My first experience with sound as a form of healing was from a very young age. I’m from a Hindu traditional family and as a child I visited sacred temples with my grandfather and my mother. At every temple (and still to this day) there are bells. The bells are used to awaken the Gods and it was my job to ring the bells every time. The sound fascinated me so much and still does. What can the clients expect? The first thing I say to my clients is “have no expectation”. But often they will still have some expectation, and usually what happens is they receive more than what they expected in the first place. Why? Because sound is vibration and vibration can heal on so many different levels according to the universal law of nature.

Most memorable healing experience? I’ve had many memorable healing experiences. One that stands out was a healing that I did in Kathmandu when there was an actual earthquake going on. It was about 5 years

ago, a few years before the serious earthquakes that occurred last year. The interesting thing about this experience was that the client had no idea there was earthquake during his healing. He didn’t feel it even though everything was shaking. He didn’t hear anything except for the singing bowls, even though lots of people were shouting and running around. And at the end of the healing the client was so amazed at the transformation he had, and still had no knowledge there had been an earthquake. How does your form of healing relate to conventional medical practice? For me the two compliment each other. It’s a bit like adding flavour to food. If medicine is the food, then sound healing acts like a flavour.

YOGA

SaLute to The Sun

The Magic of Surya Namaskar

M

ost of us don’t really stop to think about how magical these sequences of postures are and the effects they have on our body, mind and spirit. Surya Namaskar is an age old practice and one commonly practiced in most yoga classes. Sun salutations have become my all time personal favourite in my yoga practice and hold a special significance for me. Several years ago I made the move from Sydney to the Central Coast. I was going through a massive transformation process and there was a lot I needed to let go of so that I could move forward. I was blessed at the time to be living very close to a beautiful lake along a bush track in which exquisite black swans had made their home. Each day I would connect with the beauty of the nature and wildlife around me and commit to the practice of sun salutations. I cannot tell you how much committing to this simple practice helped me to move on in my life. When we practice sun salutations we are connecting to the masculine aspect within our being. The part of our being that is independent, self directed, focussed, action orientated and courageously moving forward despite any adversity. The fast flow of the movements can help to direct any excess energy tied up in creating unhelpful and unnecessary thought forms back to being grounded within the body where it is most needed. The endorphins (hormones or chemical messengers) created within the body through the practice act as a natural pain

reliever for the body, they also help to boost the mood and calm the central nervous system. The sacredness of the movements allow you to honour the light of the sun that gives the earth its nurturance, that helps the flowers to grow, shines a light in the darkness so we can see, and warms the earth to bring forth abundance. Not only do we honour the blessed light of the sun in this practice we also honour own divine light. The practice of sun salutations helps to facilitate prana – life force energy within the body. It is a boost of positivity, optimism and hope – just like the light of the sun and the spark of divinity within each one of you. As we enter summer it seems the perfect time to ask yourself – What do I need to let go of that no longer serves me and what steps is it important for me to take so that I can move forward in life? I hope this inspires you to explore the benefits of sun salutations in your practice. Namaste and may the light of the sun be with you all. Kelly started practicing yoga at the age of 15 and has turned to it as a discipline for healing. Having completed her teacher training through Byron Yoga Centre it is a joy to pass on all she has learnt through her practice. You can enjoy Kelly’s classes at Peninsula Yoga Centre on Friday mornings at 10.30 am and Sunday afternoon at 3pm. www.peninsulayogacentre.com.au

GI FTI NG ‘tis the season for last minute flailing and, for some people, gift giving anxiety!

I

f it makes you feel any better, gifting has always been pretty complex. According to anthropologists, it’s a positive social process, fulfilling various political, religious and psychological purposes. In my world gifts are given as a symbol of love, tokens to impress, to mark a special time of the season or for goodwill, peacemaking or treaty. Thankfully I haven’t needed many of the latter. Much of the “gifting” done in modern society often boils down to a near obligatory social custom. Visit someone’s house? Bring some wine or chocolates. Somebody’s birthday? Gift voucher. Friends getting hitched? Better check the registry. Around the world gifting has many different rules and associations. In China, gifting someone a clock or watch is considered especially bad taste as it’s seen to symbolize the running out of time.

G

10

Avoid giving your hostess yellow or purple flowers if you find yourself in Mexico as they are symbols of funerals and death. While you are at the florist be aware not to give your Russian friends even numbers of blooms, its deemed as bad luck! Birthdays celebrated in Thailand see the parents of the birthday person being gifted fish or birds in the same number of years their child has been living (plus an extra for good luck) They are sprinkled with blessed water and the animals released into the wild to appease the gods. Forget birthday candle anxiety – imagine the menagerie for a septuagenarian birthday! In Jewish tradition it is customary to gift pomegranates and eat them at Rosh Hashana (New Year) as a symbol of abundance and are shared with wishes to be as numerous as the seeds for the year ahead. Whatever your gifting obligations, traditions and customs remember it is more than an exchange of objects. It’s really a form of communication of emotion between you and the recipient. So what would you like to say?

Change your Thinking Change your Life

Creating a wave of Little Words of Truth on the Central Coast

W

e all have negative thoughts at times, what I call “stinking thinking”. Some of us become stuck in those thoughts and forget to remind ourselves that we are not our mistakes. It can be difficult to find a pathway back to forgiveness and self-acceptance. Thoughts are not fact, they are simply thoughts. Our perceptions of ourselves and others can be changed by changing the way we think. Negative thoughts can be changed into positive ones when we are supported to do so by our everyday environment. Crucial experiences that help to form our beliefs about ourselves occur early in life. We learn from the world around us – our family, friends, television, magazines and media advertising – all help us to develop a healthy sense of self or a poor self-image. I have created Positive Messages called “Little Words of Truth”. These kind, uplifting messages are designed to support kids (and we all have a child inside us) to love themselves a little more each day. They gift the reader with an alternative to that “stinking thinking”. The power of positive thought is not new. Norman Vincent Peale introduced his readers to “positive affirmations” in 1952. One of the most inspirational speakers of his time was Zig Ziglar who took his readers to the mirror in 1975. He instructed his readers to stand tall and square their shoulders as they stood in front of the mirror first thing in the morning and last thing at night – looking into their own eyes and always speaking in the first person “I am …” The world renowned metaphysical healer Louise Hays supported many thousands of people in discovering their own creative powers for

personal growth and self-healing through “positive affirming messages” and “mirror work”. Aussie kids are struggling with issues of anger, self-doubt and a lack of self-respect. Eating disorders, drugs, alcohol, cutting and suicide are becoming our kids only perceived means of escaping the inner pain they are feeling. Body image ideals across all types of media have increased teenager’s desire for plastic surgery – girls and boys as young as five years of age “HATE their bodies”, and the rates of depression and mental health issues within our youth are increasing. Parents are struggling to find answers. They are often the last to know that their child is in pain struggling with “stinking thinking”. “Little Words of Truth” belong in our everyday environment – on mirrors, walls, sliding doors, car windows and school corridors. These positive messages do not have to co-ordinate with the décor, they have nothing to do with art or colour. They are all about the words themselves. It is the message that sits silently, reminding each reader to think kinder thoughts and to love themselves just a little more each day. Self-acceptance is the greatest gift of all. Support your child by picking up a texta and writing on their mirror or pop into Gnostic Forest and choose one or more of these empowering affirming messages for your child (or for the child within) and create a wave of “Little Words of Truth” throughout your world. Our kids are awesome – help them to believe it! Sharen Roberts believes the happiness of your life depends on the quality of your thoughts. Little Words of Truth are available from Gnostic Forest. G

ARTSPEAK

Life in Colour SOFAN CHAN

Tell us briefly about your life and the amazing place you live? I was born and spent my formative years in Hong Kong, a small island with a great cultural diversity, high population density and a fast pace of living. My love of art brought me to study advanced western painting techniques at The School of Art Institute of Chicago in the USA, before finally settling with my partner Rochman Reese in Australia. My love of painting Buddhas, has taken me adventuring into Buddhism far and wide. I am currently studying the Master of Arts in Applied Buddhism at the Nan Tien Institute as a part-time student. As an artist, painting is how I explore and express beauty on canvas and in life. My intention is to create my life as a work of art. Everyday is one day closer to finish such a work of art. However, I won’t be able to witness the end result until the day I die. Lots of mysteries, beauty, swear and patience to bear such unknowingness. It is why life is such a divine mystery. The more I am willing to bear the-notknowing, the more I am willing to take one day at a time to experience life to the full. I suppose it is like painting. In the process of painting, the colour and form will take on the life of its own and become something more magnificent than I originally envisioned; and the only thing I need to do is to let go of control and let the divine be the guidance in the process. Where I was born, Hong Kong, is an island. As an islander at heart, I came to Australia, a bigger island and I am now living in a very small and yet intimate island – Dangar Island. Perhaps islands are one of the special places, surrounded by water and packed with energies to feed the soul. And I love my soul food. Were you born into a spiritual family? I was born a seeker and want to know the interrelationship in between the physical, mental and spiritual planes. There is always a deep knowing within me that I am not how

I look, what I do and even what I think. A strong mystical force through out my life has been steering me into many spiritual pursuits – studying of spiritual healing, philosophy, Buddhism, meditation yoga, Taichi and art. When and how did your life change direction? I was trained as an interior designer. And I loved my job. With good fortune, I was the chief interior designer in an international furniture company in my early twenties. It felt like I was on the top on the world, however, when I really looked at my peers in their thirties and forties; I said to myself, “This is it? Climbing to the glass ceiling in this career path. This is my good fortune future. Work hard to build up security that does not exist and then play hard to make up for such a high intensity of stress?” At age of 24, I decided to take time off from my busy working life in Hong Kong and went to a far away place – Chicago – to study art. Perhaps I was really just wanting to study life on my own terms. G

13

What impact have your personal relationships had on your work? When I was immersed in love, I painted many lovers paintings. After becoming a mother of three beautiful human beings, I was inspired to express love of the family and mother’ love in my art. My Buddha’s paintings are truly inspired by the pure beauty I see in life. As I have been working on self-love and self-acceptance lately, my goddess paintings are emerging.

How is you art inspired by your beliefs and the part of the world you live in? I believes that the creative force within us that makes art possible, it comes from the same place where our spirit resides. My artworks should be far more than just something beautiful for the eyes. Ultimately, they are there to nourish the soul and tantalise the mind. Art is the channel through it, my soul speaks. How do you see the future for humanity? I was born in such an amazing time in history as a woman; the opportunities, freedom and the autonomy that I enjoy were totally out of reach for my mother, grandmother and their grandmothers. If as a woman today, I can have such a great freedom to explore education, spirituality, possession, ownership, relationship and individuality – humanity is indeed transitioning into a more love-based society and shifting to a heart-based paradigm.

G

14

If you could give some advice to children what would it be? Follow your heart, express love in life, in work and in all relationships. By doing what you love and loving what you do, you will become the highest possible human and your life become a work of art in the making.

Between a rock and a hard place

Steven Strong and his son Evan have spent years following the trail of information that surround sacred rocks.

Steven is a secondary school teacher with a background in Archaeology and Education. He was involved in the formation of a Graduate Diploma of Aboriginal Education for the NSW Department of Education, writing units on Traditional Law and Contemporary History. He also co-authored the highly successful “Aboriginal Australia: A Language and Cultural kit”. Evan Strong has a background in Sociology and Psychology. They have spent many years learning and living with the Bundjalung Language Confederation and Gumilaroi people of Northern New South Wales. In Steven’s own words he describes his mission, “Our main brief is to prove through scientific fact that which the Elders insist is true. We have assembled facts about archaeological finds, and also early contact accounts, genetics, Serpent myths, Dreaming stories, Amerindian myths, parallels in religious texts, etc into one coherent theory”

Aboriginal Elders have identified these rocks and also requested that they be returned and replaced on the ground in the appropriate sacred land. Currently they are touring to introduce these Stones to the people before returning them to the rightful place. Steven visited Gnostic Forest recently, raising awareness of the importance of the information the stones are holding. Before beginning his talk he performed a traditional smoking ceremony in the street outside the venue. Following ancient aboriginal tradition Steven burned gum leaves and allowed the smoke to clear the energy in preparation for the presentation. Steven explained how a rock found in a residential garden in Kariong has been dated at around 10,000 years old and has similar unnatural markings to stones found in Bosnia. Calgary US and Germany. These rocks have markings made with technology no longer known, and indigenous elders are able to extract the knowledge held in each rock.

SUMMER ZODIAC

Sagittarius

The Archer The search for knowledge and truth inspires Sagittarius, who is on a quest to find the meaning of life. Curious and open minded, Sagittarius relishes the adventure that comes with the quest, be it a roam around the world or a deep inner journey. Enthusiastic Sagittarius thrives on new experiences and truly loves life. Freedom to learn and explore is important to Sagittarius, who doesn’t take kindly to having those wings clipped. The pursuit of knowledge brings Sagittarius into contact with many new ideas and cultures and Sagittarius will often turn to philosophy and religion in the search for answers to the deeper questions. Optimistic, generous, just and kindhearted, Sagittarius is great company with a good sense of humour to boot. One can trust Sagittarius and expect to be trusted in return. Sagittarius is also very straightforward, preferring to tell it like it is.

Aquarius Capricorn

The Goat With dedication and stalwart discipline, Capricorn sets a goal, rolls up sleeves and gets to work. Capricorn is down to earth, and understands that a lofty goal requires real commitment and effort, and has plenty of the patience and determination required to achieve it. Capricorn is ambitious, but realistic and practical, which means the road to success will be travelled in a responsible and efficient way, with a fail-safe plan in effect. Tradition and convention suit Capricorn well. A strong sense of fair play also means that Capricorn can be trusted and relied upon.

The Water Bearer Aquarius wants to change the world, and clearly can. A visionary and original thinker, Aquarius has a brilliant and unconventional mind, which produces truly innovative and creative ideas. Combine this sharp and inventive intellect with Aquarius’ humanitarian spirit and you get a force for good. Altruistic and compassionate Aquarius puts much effort into thinking of new ways to make the world a better place. Aquarius is self-assured and sees possibilities and alternatives where others don’t, which can annoy Aquarius when others fail to see things the same way. Essentially, though, Aquarius wants to encourage everybody to get on board with the new plan to change the world for the greater good. Aquarius is unique and individual but loves the company of others and makes friends easily.

COAST

Local Music Local Voices

S

unday Session radio show started in June this year, 9-11pm fortnightly on Coast FM 96.3. Producer and presenter, Meredith Gilmore, says the program aims to showcase and promote Central Coast music and local music artists, and broadcast in-depth interviews with a wide range of local people. “Late Sunday night is a relaxed time for listeners to hear new or different music, especially from local artists, and a conversational interview with an interesting person from the Coast.” All local conversations are uploaded the week after broadcast, with links on the show’s Facebook page to the Soundcloud playlist of interviews. Meredith Gilmore has been with Coast FM since 2008, and also presents Coast Arts, 6-7pm Sundays, with a selection of news, views and voices from arts on the Coast. The new Sunday Session program aims to bring attention to the scope, depth and breadth of music talent based on the Coast, from emerging artists whose talent may have been nurtured and developed locally, to artists who’ve moved here because of its environment, community and lifestyle. It’s just one of the

many programs on Coast FM broadcast from studios in Gosford. All programs are made by volunteers, as Coast FM is Central Coast Community Radio, formerly known as 2CCC and now in its 25th year. You’re welcome to email info about local music artists, and expressions of interest to be featured on the program, to Meredith at arts@coastfm.org.au Check out @Sunday Session radio show on Facebook, and details about all Coast FM’s programs – plus live streaming – at www.coastfm.org.au

EAT

Summer Spinach Pie Egg & Dairy free Serves 6-8

Filling • 4 cups Spinach/Kale – washed and torn • 1 white Onion chopped • 1 cup chopped Leek or Spring Onion • 1 tsp very finely chopped Lemon rind • 2tbsp Lemon Juice • 500gm Firm Tofu package – crumbled • Herb you like (1/3 cup Mint is great) • Optional: 1 cup Mushrooms (do it) Cashew Cheeze SAUCE • 1 cup Cashews • 2-3 tbsp Nutritional Yeast (from health food shops) • 1 tsp of Mustard (Dijon is great!) • 1-1/2 cups water • 3 tbsp Braggs Liquid Aminos or Tamari • Salt and Pepper to taste • Juice from 1/2 Lemon Pastry: • 1 package of Filo Pastry • 1/2-1/4 cup Olive Oil or melted Nuttalex (to brush pastry with)

Preheat your oven to 187 degrees because you are a non conformist.

In a large pot or frypan, sauté onion and Leek/Spring onions (and Mushrooms if using) until onions are translucent. Once this is done, toss though spinach (and optional herbs) and turn off the heat. Pop on a lid to sweat the spinach a little so it softens. For the Sauce: Combine all ingredients into blender and wizz on high till creamy. Season to taste with more salt/ pepper/Nutritional Yeast to suit your tastes.

Crumble Tofu with your hands till it resembles ricotta and combine with cheese sauce till thoroughly coated.

Combine Greens and sauce. Mix well and set aside to cool while you prep the Pastry. Taste again now and season with herbs or spices like sweet paprika or cayenne pepper if you like heat. In a large baking tray layer 8 sheets of Filo pastry whilst brushing oil between layers. Pile in the combined spinach cheese and tofu mix and continue to layer 4-5 sheets of Filo on tip, brushing with oil between each layer.

Pop that goodness in the oven and bake for 20 mins. Check to see top is browning beautifully and congratulate yourself on being clever and cooking marvellous food.

Bake for another 5-10 mins and you’ll know it’s done when it’s golden brown on top and your house smells fab! Serve with fresh garden salad and a smug smile. :) – E.H.

art@MANA

Gnostic Mana Cafe features monthly exhibitions from the Central Coast’s leading artists. DECEMBER: Remona Hayes and Alene Kieser

Remona: I just love painting and drawing – it’s my life! I also enjoy fellow artist’s works regardless of the style and medium.

Alene: I look towards nature for inspiration. I’ve been painting for over 20 years and still learning!

JANUARY: James Moseley I am a self taught artist, helped along the way by fellow artists and friends. Painting is a good escape from the world. Time passes and the sometimes bewilderment of the outcome can bring joy to me and hopefully others. This exhibition isn’t about anything in particular other than the process of creating. Texture, paint and ink are applied and I feel heart take over. I cannot explain how it happens and therefore do not wish to try. I hope you find my works beautiful, odd, interesting or none of those. It’s ok. Just take time to look.

Planetary Influences

for DECEMBER 2016, JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2017

EVENTS

Jennifer has been an Astrologer  for 24 years (FAA Certificate) and is at Gnostic Forest on Fridays. Annular Lunar Eclipse*: 11th February 2017 ...10.32am...22* 28” Leo... 27th February 2017 ...00.58am...8* 12” Pisces...

*Annular Eclipse is a “total”eclipse but the moon is too far from the Earth for the apex of it’s shadow to reach the Earth’s surface. Therefore, the Moon will not entirely hide the Sun so a narrow ring of light will surround the dark new moon.

DECEMBER

JANUARY

FEBRUARY

Confidence in many areas and creating good sound judgement in relation to all aspects of your life, especially business dealings, will give you the opportunity to tap into your own wisdom and make positive decisions with great outcomes. Be careful not to let these opportunities slip through your fingers, as you may take this time for granted and miss out. However be wary of people offering deals that seem “too good to be true”, as of course they usually are! A time to free yourself of any restrictions and be grateful for your new found freedom.

Building bridges in relationships and sharing your innermost thoughts and feelings are important. Although be very careful of high expectations, as tensions may rise causing more conflict between you all that is not needed. Look at your situation with a clear mind and with calmness, as this will allow you to get a positive solution instead of a negative response. Make love not war!

February will bring some disruptions, forcing issues and problems out in the open. You may feel restless and caged in, so you need to compromise your freedom of selfexpression to find solutions to resolve any conflicts at hand. Keep a good eye on your finances as you may experience some difficulty with your expenses this month. Serious thoughts and concentration is the key as you find yourself pondering your life and carefully planning for your future.
