YEAR

2017 year of the

ROOSTER The Rooster

I am on hand to herald in the day, and to announce its exit.

I thrive by clockwork and precision.

In my unending quest for perfection all things will be restored to their rightful place. I am the exacting taskmaster, the ever-watchful administrator. I seek perfect order in my world. I represent unfailing dedication. I AM THE ROOSTER. – Author Unknown

T

he year of the Rooster will be exciting. The rooster does not waste time. Once he has an idea he will quickly get in and and have it under way. Roosters look to the earth to survive. They dig around looking food, so this year a lot of natural things come to life. Last year was a hard year for lots of people, illness, money worries, worrying about their jobs etc. This year things will start to show an uplift from early in the year. We can expect changes in the way our Governments do things. It will be a year of “But Why?” in every section and walk in life. If you are planning to bring something new to your work, home or way of life, make sure you have all the facts as to why you are doing it. “More transparency” will be a phrase that will used and followed up on. Roosters like to crow, remember, to let every one know they are here. As breakthroughs are

made in medicine and industries they will be in the press for all to see. Farming in Australia will be researched more. Maybe not so many imported foods, more fresh food grown here. If you are planning a baby this year, don’t expect any sleep ins. Once a Rooster baby is awake, everyone is awake! Of course there will be ups and downs – that’s life – but this year will see more ups, change and things for the most part will be done right the first time. If things go to plan for the Rooster, there will be less waste in the world! June Turner is a psychic medium at Gnostic Forest on Thursdays and Sundays.

SPIRIT

CLEAR YOUR SPACE W

e live in a physical world, which is influenced by the seen and unseen. At times our homes or work spaces, even our cars may have a feeling that something is not quite right. Just as you would physically clean these spaces to remove dust and dirt. You also need to energetically clean them to remove unwanted energies. Here’s a simple ritual you may like to try. Place a picture of Archangel Michael on a table. Take a small plate with a white candle on it and position in front of the picture. Pour table salt in a bowl and using your right index finger draw a circle around the plate and candle. Talk to Archangel Michael, tell him of any concerns and ask for help. Then light up the candle and let it burn until completion. Leave this setting without touching it for 3 days.

MouseRug

On the third day, collect the salt with folded white pieces of paper, throw the salt in the toilet, then flush the toilet as you ask for it to be transformed into cleared energy by the water. Give thanks to Archangel Michael for assistance in clearing your space. Salt has been used for purification since the beginning of time. Angels especially Archangel Michael have been invoked for protection for centuries. Intention is the key ingredient in this and any other ritual. Anything can be transformed, healed and magnified as soon as the mind is ready to let it go. John Martin is at Gnostic Forest on Tuesdays and Mondays doing workshops and classes on psychic development.

Find yourself on Gnostic Corner The experience you are having on Gnostic Corner is totally subjective. The service you are given and the products you see will cause reactions for you according to how you feel. The word “Gnosis” is an ancient Greek word meaning knowledge gained through personal experience. The way you see, hear, smell, feel and taste the world is open to your own interpretation, and usually based on previous experiences. It is our intention to provide goods and services to help you find peace in a busy, sometimes chaotic world. We too are travelling through this time in history and dealing with our lives and the challenges of this modern world. By sharing a little, and giving a little, we all will have the best day possible. None of us can have real “gnosis” of the other’s journey, the circumstances that have brought each of us here today are different. And while our background stories remain hidden, kindness and a smile can translate and help to bring a positive experience for everyone. – M.H. Namaste: A Sanskrit word meaning the divine spark in me honours the divine spark in you.

YOGA

The Mystery of Yoga Yoga offers the perfect antidote to modern western living

T

he ancient philosophy of yoga has developed into a legitimate form of healing in the western world. The wellness benefits of yoga are incredible; you can completely rebuild your body with the correct sequence of postures. The need to relax, focus and chill out has never been needed more than NOW! People are living fast paced lives, rushing, stressing out as they frantically run from one commitment to the next, the world has never been busier. Yoga offers the perfect antidote to modern western living. Unfortunately some people are still reluctant to take the leap and walk through the door of their local yoga studio to try out a class. The word “yoga” conjures up false images and paradigms for many people, which is mainly attributed to a push by parts of the yoga industry to gain market share. Let me de-mystify a few points for you; your age is no barrier I have clients who range from 15 to 101 years old. Your level of fitness, flexibility, balance and strength is irrelevant, there

is a class suitable for you. Yoga postures will compliment your sporting and fitness regimes. Yoga is not a religion or gender specific. There is no particular body shape required, no special language has to be learnt or spoken, you don’t have to chant, burn incense, eat mung beans or have to have been born under any under any particular star sign to participate. There are no special yoga clothes or foot ware, you actually practice in bare feet. If you would to like to explore higher forms of meditation that path is open to you but it won’t be forced upon you. What you do need is a desire to improve your health and wellness. If you want to develop a subtle, flexible and fit body through structured and appropriate movement, if you would like to learn some relaxation techniques the holistic philosophy of yoga could be for you. John Wilson, www.peninsulayogacentre.com.au John is a true local, having been a resident of the Woy Woy Peninsula for 30 years and has offered Yoga classes for over 10 years.

Meditation The art of falling still

The aim of Meditation is to relieve the body and mind of stress. With regular practice you can learn to slow and then stop the constant chatter of the mind. Breath Work encourages the body to relax and release stress that has accumulated over time. If not released this stress weakens your organs and can allow disease.

How Long Do I Need to Meditate? This varies for the individual – how long does it take you to relax? With regular practice you will find it easier to fall still in a shorter amount of time. When you watch your thoughts come and do not feed your mind additional thoughts they disappear. The space between your thoughts will lengthen and a sense of well being will develop.

How do I stop my body from wanting to move? We live active lives and our bodies are expecting to move while we are awake. Scientists have recognised that day dreaming has a positive effect on the body. When we sit in stillness and contemplate, especially on nature, our heart rate slows and our blood pressure adjusts. At first your body will want to twitch or you may feel the urge to cough. By placing your tongue n the roof of your mouth and focusing on the point in the middle of your top lip, you can find it easier to sit still. Eventually your body will recognise stillness as a positive experience and the distractions will cease. Meditation has been included in healthy lifestyle practices in the east for thousands of years, the western world with all its ills is today adopting the Art of Falling Still. Gnostic Corner offers several classes each week – see the Gnostic School of Higher Learning on page 4 for a complete timetable. – MH

SEASON

AUTUMN BOWLS The Autumn season is traditionally a period for restoration and replenishment. Be sure to nourish yourself with the following wholefoods meal, It’s a delicious and hearty dish, full of colour, favour and nutritional lavishness! This recipe is from Rita Balshaw’s book Hippies in the City – Urban Remedies available at Gnostic Forest.

• • • • • • • •

1 C buckwheat or quinoa 1/2 a butternut pumpkin 2 baby carrots 2 beetroots 2 parsnips 2 turnips 1 bunch kale 1 bunch parsley

• • • • • • • •

1 t sea salt & pepper 1 T curry powder 1 t cumin powder 1 cinnamon stick 1 t cinnamon powder 1 t organic honey 2 T olive oil 1 C pecans

Bring the buckwheat groats and one cinnamon stick to boil in salted water, then simmer for about fifteen minutes. Strain and set aside. Thoroughly wash, chop and slice all the vegetables. Take a large oven tray and grease it with olive oil. Evenly sprinkle the awaiting veggies with heaps of salt, pepper, curry, cumin and cinnamon powder. I always splash my veggies with a tablespoon or two of water and a little honey before baking to ensure a moist, yet crunchy outcome. Cooking time is roughly twentyfive minutes in a fan forced oven at 180°C. Serve your guests a portion of the mixed roasted veggies and a scoop of buckwheat into pretty serving bowls, along with a handful of pecans, dollop of fresh hummus, chopped parsley and a good splash of tamari soy sauce. SOULSPEAK

In the interests of sharing knowledge learned through experience (Gnosis) we interview people from all beliefs to share insights from their path. May we all learn and grow together in peace.

Venerable DaiJu ZenJi Tell us a little about yourself and how you came to your beliefs? Ah… now THAT is a long story. I came from a Protestant Christian household and went to Catholic School but the more questions I asked about the Christian Path the less the answers seemed to fit what I observed. The first time I seriously considered Buddhism was during a troubled time in my youth, I nearly ran away to join a Thai Forest Monastery but luckily realised I was far too immature to follow the Dharma at that stage. So instead I told myself nothing was wrong and tried to live a ‘normal’ life. During another crisis 4 years later I could no longer pretend that everything was fine. So I sold my house, gave away everything I owned and said goodbye to my friends. I spent nearly a year travelling Nepal and India with nothing but a small backpack and eventually settled in Bodhgaya, which is the town built near where the Buddha attained Enlightenment. During this time I was blessed with teachings from various lineages including the Dalai Lama but I still felt that the answers I needed were in the Zen school. I wrote to 30 monasteries to see if they would accept me. After some time in a training monastery (meditating 7 hours a day is not something you do without a bit of practice first) I was lucky enough to be accepted at Sogenji under my Master, ShoDo Harada Roshi. I trained at Sogenji for 9 years. Since that time I have helped run our Monasteries in the USA and set up one in Germany. I came back to Australia to study Traditional Chinese Medicine and became an Acupuncturist and Herbalist for a while but the GFC opened other opportunities for me and I mostly work as a Marketing Consultant. My hobbies are SCUBA diving, photography (both above and under-water) and Computer Programming.

Can you discuss your beliefs further? If I do have one secret it is that I adore aspects of Taoism and use the Tao Te Ching as a basis for the discussions in my Advanced Classes. Having said this I teach a non-denominational Meditation class and have spoken in Churches, Hindu Temples and even a Mosque before. I have also spoken at Religious Schools and decidedly atheist Businesses. The Japanese have a saying which is “Faith is like a Mountain; there is only one peak but many Paths”. I believe we are defined more by how we live our lives than by the particular differences between the Paths.

How have your beliefs shaped you personally? They influence me in every way. Since returning to society I have immersed myself in a world very different to Monastic living. But this does not mean that the effort and intention which carried me through 9 years of life-defining training are let G

13

go of. Instead it is important to take that which I was taught and use it in a way that fits seamlessly to a very different environment. This is actually a core part of the final stages of the course I teach: Meditation is useless if it is gone once you step away from the cushion. The deepest lesson of Rinzai Zen training is that we need to take that meditation and give it life all day long no matter what challenges us. What are your challenges spiritually? Like anyone my challenge is trusting Change. We humans are a curious breed, we do all we can to create a ‘safe’ and ‘stable’ world in our own image but the universe doesn’t play like that. It constantly pushes us off balance to show us how un-centred we are and how much we rely on some imagined external security. The responsibility for anyone who accepts this is to find that Centre within your own being. To be the still-point around which the storm can blow. That way we can experience it fully but not be moved around by it. In Zen we say there is only one thing in the universe that does not change, and that is Change itself.

How does/did your practice take form? Zazen Meditation and Reflection are essential parts of the Zen Tradition, but often students forget that another aspect is the ability and courage to Question. We are not just a ‘sailor on the sea of fate’, we are an active participant in the Universe. The choices we make and the depth we develop are all driven by the willingness to want to know more, to understand more and to experience more. That is my Practice, to be centred enough to allow the Universe to flow through me, to question

G

14

if I have fully explored the Path yet and trust I have the strength to keep going.

To what end do you practice your beliefs? As a Buddhist Monk my job is not to convert people to Buddhism and certainly not to sermonise. My job it is be a catalyst for the Change that each and every one of us is struggling to experience. I do not seek to change others, I put my effort into aligning myself so that others can see my footsteps clearly and follow if they choose.

Where do you believe we go when we die? Much has been made of the Buddhist idea of reincarnation, some sects of Buddhism even believe in a Heaven-like existence after death. To a practitioner of Zen though these are just a distraction. Zazen is training your body, mind and essence to be completely present in each and every moment. To live each breath as though it is your last. We do not allow the Past to concern us, we do not allow an imagined Future to distract us. We put all our effort in to living, being alive 100% in the here and now. Who cares what happens when we die if we are not truly alive now? Please share with us a quote, lyrics or prayer that has inspired you? I could quote almost all of the Tao Te Ching here! However let me give the very first Quote I read of the Buddha’s. It is from the Mahaparinirvana Sutra and is believed to be his last words: “Be a light unto yourself; rely on no other. Hold fast to the Truth.” DaiJu is teaching at the Gnostic School for Higher Learning. See page 4 for details.

It may be surprising to learn that the GUT works directly with the nervous system and immune system; therefore, diseases of the GUT not only affect digestion and absorption of nutrients, but also may decrease our ability to handle stress, making us emotionally vulnerable and overly sensitive and may result in poor immune function, predisposing us to repeated colds and infections, Our gut and brain develop from the same part of the human embryo and share many of the same nerve endings, hormones and neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters carry information from one nerve cell to another enabling the brain and gut to send and receive messages. Approximately 80 % of the body’s serotonin receptors, your feel good neuero-transmitter is found in the gut, spreading itself through the entire GIT. In the gut serotonin initiates responses such as nausea, vomiting and peristaltic reflex, which is the reason why antidepressant drugs such as SSRIs cause gut related side effects as they are increasing serotonin levels in the gut and brain. Serotonin in the brain influences mood and cognition. If the gut is inflamed this may affect our mood, cognition and ability to handle stress. A herbal tincture with key herbs to enhance your ability to handle stress and calm any gut inflammation helps so many clients overcome this. Naturopathic approaches are based on the belief that every person is unique; thus diagnosis and treatment of ailments is always individualised. We are all biochemically different and hence respond to and absorb nutrients differently. Everyone has areas of weakness that require support to enable them to function optimally. These are either inherited or due to lifestyle choices and the environment we are exposed to. The

task of the herbalist is to assess and enable each person’s potential. We treat the individual, rather than a disease and assess the cause of health problems by a complex consultation covering the major systems. Contemporary Western Herbalism aims to stimulate vitality primarily. This is achieved through addressing four key aspects essential to healthy functioning.

1. Enhancing digestion and assimilation of nutrients. This involves removing pathogens, restoring the gut lining and correcting dysbiosis. 2. Encouraging elimination of metabolic wastes. 3. Ensuring adequate circulation (of blood to provide nutrients to all the cells and lymph to carry away wastes) 4. Stimulating the nerve supply.

Addressing these fundamental physiological functions enhances vitality by providing an environment that maximises the body’s innate healing capacity. What separates The Gnostic Healing Centre with other clinics is our ability for The Mora Bioresonance machine to identify the underlying drivers of ill-health. We are also able to identify food sensitivities which are contributing to the inflammation of the gut. Megan Clarke uses Herbal Medicine, Nutrition and lifestyle advice to empower her clients at Gnostic Healing Centre.

INTERVIEW

Michelle Kinnane

Dream Therapist / Visual Artist

What drew you to working with dream imagery? My interest in Jungian psychology, symbolism and dreams began in my thirties and was reignited after a chronic illness gave me the opportunity to study Jung’s work further in 2001. After teaching Visual Arts for almost twenty years in Sydney High Schools, my direction in life took a 180 degree turn at this time after a stint in East Timor as a volunteer. Returning to convalesce on the central coast, at a physical, spiritual and creative low, I turned my focus to the inner realm, spending the next three years studying and healing with Jungian Dream Therapy.

How have you incorporated this in your professional life? As my health improved, I began painting a series of the archetypal figures from the Tarot, after reading “Jung and Tarot” by Sallie Nichols. Using symbols from ancient mythologies and cultures, my personal understanding of these mysterious cards led me to using them as a psychological tool to accompany my new work in Dream Therapy, Astrology and Numerology. The idea of opening a space for people to share this incredibly life changing experience manifested in the opening of an art school:“The Art Space” in 2011. Focusing and building on these two passions, visual arts and psychology, has provided many rewarding years since then. Working two days/ week at Gnostic Forest as a tarot reader/ dream consultant, and running monthly weekend art workshops at The Art Space, also on the Central Coast, I wake each day feeling nothing but gratitude for the unseen curve ball life through me, back in 2001. Dreams have been important in many cultures and ancient civilizations. Why did the western world seek to minimise this? In ancient Greece and Rome, an asclepeion was a healing temple where pilgrims flocked, sleeping overnight and reporting their dreams to a priest the following day to receive a cure. It was only until late last century that the western world of rational thinking changed its sceptical attitude towards the importance of dreams.

With recent, advanced technologies opening up vast new areas of understanding in sleep research and brain imaging, important dream theories developed by last century’s dream gurus, Freud and Jung have now been confirmed.

Jung vs Freud Dream Analysis? To Freud, the sex drive was the virtual engine behind our dreams, and sexual meaning was to be found in many common dream images. This theory became one of the important points of difference between himself and his younger colleague Dr. Jung. Instead, Jung suggested that dreams are doing the work of integrating our conscious and unconscious lives; he called this process ‘individuation.’ No one has influenced modern dream studies more than Carl Jung. Michelle can be found at Gnostic Forest on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am – 4pm. DISCOVER THE Tarot

T

here are many differing opinions as to the age and origins of the Tarot. We can be sure that cards have been used for entertainment since the times of ancient Egypt, and that the modern Tarot we use for guidance has been in its current format for at least 400 years. The Chinese in the 9th century AD used block printing to make cards which were then hand coloured. The Turkish as earlier as the 14th century, had a unique deck which spread to Europe with the Malmuks – a fierce band of slave soldiers of Islamic faith. These cards resembled those used today with four clear suits and court cards. There was a separate card used for the enquirer which has disappeared from modern decks. Nomadic gypsies also carried cards and had the reputation of psychic abilities. In Europe original cards were hand painted and this made them very valuable. The royal courts of France and Italy used the cards on a regular basis to guide the Kings & Queens in all types of decision making. Throughout history each nation had their own interpretation and offered slight adjustments to the original designs and meanings. With the progression of time the cards have changed to reflect current cultural trends. Today there are literally hundreds of decks available. The Tarot is considered a language providing insight into current situations and future prospects. It is generally accepted that the Tarot is always correct – what varies is the reader’s ability to accurately interpret the messages. – M.H.

WISEGUYS

The Invisible Backpack of Privilege

Discrimination comes, we assume, from removing someone’s ability to have something or do something others are allowed. A removal of equality. But what if it wasn’t there in the first place?

I

n 1989, after years fighting for the rights of women and African Americans, activist Peggy McIntosh listed the implicit privileges afforded to her; how they created an obvious advantage to her life. She realised a great list of things she did easily. Things such as: swear, move freely, dress in second hand clothes and gather in public with people of her own race without suspicion. Her list was extensive and brought to light the reality of everyday situations faced by those who were different. Advantage isn’t something we naturally pay much attention to in our lives. Most of us move about though our day enjoying the ease at which we operate. Freedoms, abilities and allowances within our lives don’t beg time for contemplation as they come without obstruction. Most times we don’t recognise our advantage or privileges, but often when we do, we see it as luck, or earned. It is built up around you by the dominant paradigm of society and its collective beliefs. It may create or support bias or discrimination within you towards those that are different.

Speaking in modern terms, if you: • are able to kiss the person you love openly • move speak and live unhindered by physical obstacles • go out in public without harassment or intimidation • dress in the gender you identify as • speak your native tongue in any situation • provide for yourself and your family You may have privilege that you hadn’t considered before. In a time where debates rage on refugees, social security, racism and sexisim, where opinions are held -loudly- there lies a challenge for each of us to reflect. Humble honesty. Time taken to reflect on the biases created within us. To identify privilege begs not shame or guilt but a responsibility to live in a way that does not deny another’s everyday experience as valid. You haven’t walked a day in their shoes. Em acknowledges her white, able bodied, young, middle class privilege. She aims to be kind to all of differing experiences.

Gnostic Mana Cafe features monthly exhibitions from the Central Coast’s leading artists. APRIL: Mike Pedro & Jessica Towers / Headless Nation We are the Headless Duo – emerging artists and designers living by the sea, constantly creating, staying away from the mainstream and slowly building our Headless Empire. We want to bring you guys unique and fresh designs on variety of quality products, and a create a brand that you guys can be psyched about being a part of. Our first goal for Headless is to bring like-minded people together, people that by societies standards are broken, conspiracy theorists, dirty hippies, - which results in a lot of lost souls trying to evolve and expand their consciousness alone…so help us build this Headless Empire into a community!!!! Come get lost in the beautiful abstract, vibrant worlds Mike Pedro creates with acrylic and resin, and Headless Jess’ intricate and extremely detailed inked and watercolored mandalas, skulls and sea creatures. Hope to see you there! JUNE: Candice Hill, “The Delicate Cherry” Hello all! I’m a 24 year old woman who is proud to call the beautiful central coast home. To me, art is the ultimate form of expression and meditation. Ever since I was a little girl I have found peace in creating but it wasn’t until the birth of my son that I found it brought me a deeper sense of connection. I love to experiment with mandalas and colour, usually at different times. My preferred mediums are acylic on canvas. The word Mandala in sanskrit means circle and has come to represent the circle of life in all its beauty. Each of my mandalas holds it’s own message within, a message that both myself and my audience will experience differently! I hope my artwork brings you a much joy as it did to me while making it!

Planetary Influences

for MARCH, April & MAY 2017

Jennifer has been an Astrologer  for 24 years (FAA Certificate) and is at Gnostic Forest on Fridays.

As the year moves on, the earth continues its orbit around the sun. This natural progression changes our position in relation to the other planets and the following influences occur…

MARCH

APRIL

MAY

This month you need to curb your emotions. Some may feel at times that they lack the confidence and ability to see things without feeling threatened by the sudden changes that appear before them. Being explosive, impatient, and extremely intense will not help . Self discipline is the key here, so show some restraint to avoid dangerous sports, and pursuits that could cause you harm. Stay focused within yourself in a positive way, to help you to make good decisions within your relationships and career.

Going overboard to get your own way will not be helpful for yourself, or others. Wisdom can bring to you a sense of confidence and patience for making changes, and to let go of projects that have outlived their true purpose. Remaining calm, and staying focused will stop you from “banging your head against a brick wall”. Being responsible, staying true to yourself, those you love and work with will help you to stay in a positive frame of mind. Look after your physical health and understand that forgiveness is a huge thing for all in April!

Feeling energised, life takes on a positive turn. Renewing old structures, and breaking out with self confidence, will help you to respect your achievements. Building relationships with a renewed sense of vigour and enjoyment has you feeling life is good... although be aware NOT to give more of yourself than needed, because you could feel like you’re being taken advantage of and this can cause some anxiety and tension. Know when to bring in the “welcome mat.”
