Welcome
C
ocooned in layers of clothes as I write this, the first cold spell of the season has arrived. This type of change inspires self nurturing, though not always in the most healthful ways. Our beautiful Keren at the Village Wear recently took to the habit of asking herself when posed with a choice “Does this nourish me?” What an awesome way to direct our choices towards positive, mindful self care! In this issue you will find a recipe for Smokey Beans (pg.15) to nourish your body. Sharne warms us with wisdom on essential oils (pg. 11) and Yoga John encourages some movement to keep the winter blues away (p.27). Remember to be kind to your body, mind and soul. In this way we can meet others with kindness as we don’t feel depleted ourselves. Keep warm, keep woke. Emily

COMMUNITY
FLaSH MOB! G
nostic Forest celebrated 20 years in Woy Woy by creating a Flash Mob. We reviewed the last two decades and considered that we owe it all to our great staff and community. Without the support of both groups no business could survive for so long in this competitive world. Having a sense of community gives security in changing times. To walk into your local village and be greeted by someone who recognises you gives a special feeling. During the filming on the Gnostic Corner for the Flash Mob, one of our regular customers told the story of how he came to live in Woy Woy at a very challenging time in his life. He relayed how accepted he felt from the first day, and that he has since chosen to make this his permanent home. Being recognised and valued are major factors in reducing stress and depression. Having a sense of belonging, feeling like you have a tribe and are accepted boosts your mood which in turn improves your immune system helping to ward off illness and disease. GNOSTIC means knowledge gained through personal experience. By contributing to a community that accepts and supports each other you all make the world a better place and improve those personal experiences. Namaste. – Mary Holstein Check out the flashmob video on youtube: “Gnostic Flash Mob Main Event” Thank you to Brad at 101degrees.com.au

Spiritual
Business These two words bring confusion to many people. To be good at SPIRITUAL you need to let go of attachment to the material world. And to be good at BUSINESS you need to collect as many material assets as you can.
S
o how do you become a Spiritual Business and achieve a balance between the two sets of values? The competitive western world is based on a profit and loss economy, which would suggest for one to profit another one has to lose. This principle forces the desire for growth and inevitably puts stress on the planet and its inhabitants. Someone makes something from raw materials bought or collected, then they add a little bit extra for their energy and time and sell it onto someone else. This cycle continues until the product reaches the consumer. The need to cover costs gets confused with the need to produce higher profits. As prices soar, pressure is put on wages to keep up and the stress on the workplace is palpable. The quality of the products declines. The focus is on more rather than better. We have been conditioned to think we need more, we have to be more and have more every day. More profit, more fitness, more money, more friends. Doesn’t sound like very Spiritual Business at all. An alternative approach would be mutual benefit in all transactions. We agree to pay a fair price and in return we receive a quality item and good service. Because we bought quality, the item lasts and the pressure on the system to over produce lessens. Waste from discarded, poor quality items drops reducing toxic landfill. Workers can feel pride in their products – in this
type of business there is no loser, everyone has gained. The focus has shifted to quality rather than volume. Ruben F Scarf once wrote a precious little book called The Key is Three. He talked about three principles for a successful business. 1. Have good quality Service – staff who are friendly and have thorough product knowledge
2. Have good Products – even the best staff can’t sell rubbish
3. Charge a fair Price – If profit is given priority No.1 and No.2 will suffer.
These three keys can apply to all types of business and provide a simply reliable recipe for success. Stay focused while remaining aware, but not concerned about what others are doing in your industry. By focusing on competition, you are energising a profit and loss attitude. By taking the focus off competition and placing it on providing the above three qualities your energy is going into positive creation. G
9
To be mindful of our behaviour and reprogram negative patterns there are some useful and basic philosophical principles that we can apply.
• Be prepared to give your best and you are
guaranteed to receive a high standard in return. The energy you put out sets the level for what you will receive
• Practise gratitude for everything you have,
things you are grateful for you look after, including jobs, employees and possessions. The term appreciate means to add value to
• Measure success in quality rather than
volume. To be satisfied with less will relieve stress on yourself and the system you live in.
You can test the authenticity of any philosophical principle by checking that it can
translate to all parts of life, in this case not just business. These values can be used in everything we undertake. Imagine if we bought and ate better quality food. We could eat less and still receive the nutrition we require. With less to digest we would produce less waste and the stress on our physical bodies would lessen. You might even consider having less friends and better friendships. Having more time to build strong quality friendships can provide a level of security that lots of acquaintances never can. It is possible to have Spirituality in Business and all areas of our lives when we use the appropriate set of measures for success. Something that lasts a long time will always be of more value than something that was created to feed greed. – M.H.
The Story of the
Two Wolves
A
n old Cherokee is speaking to his Grandson about life. He says to the boy “There is a great battle going on inside every human, a fearsome battle between two wolves. One is evil, it is anger, sorrow, greed, regret, arrogance, ego and hatred. This is the wolf of fear. The other is good, it is compassion, kindness, forgiveness, joy, hope, generosity and peace. This is the wolf of love.” The Grandson pauses and ponders for a moment, then looks at him and says, “But Grandfather, which wolf wins?” The old Cherokee simply replies, “The one you feed”. In any moment we have a choice. Through our thoughts, our actions and our words, we choose to feed either the wolf of love or the wolf of fear. As Viktor E. Frankl says in his book ‘Mans Search For Meaning’; “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom” We can set ourselves free from suffering when we consciously choose to feed the wolf of love. So ask yourself, which wolf are you feeding? – Lauren Montgomery

inter – the days are becoming shorter, the sky is awash with grey, the winds are howling, and the drenching rain can seem never ending. Winter is ideally a time to dive deep into our caves and hibernate – the animals have the right idea! But, for most of us we still must go to work, taxi the kids around, get the groceries all whilst trying to avoid the dreaded colds and flu associated with the season. One of the best ways to stay well this winter is with Essential Oils. The most beneficial ways for you to get the most from your essential oils is by diffusing them. Hence, the term Aromatherapy. Using immune supportive essential oils daily is a great first line of defence. Some essential oils to lift your spirit during the cold grey months are: Lime, Orange and Ylang Ylang. These oils will help support your body’s natural defences as well as lift your spirits on cold winter days. Another great blend for a happy winter home is Frankincense, Marjoram and Orange. With all the bugs and germs floating around us during this time some natural germ busters to use around the house and office are Thyme, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus and Cinnamon. Use them in vaporisers, make a germ fighting spray bottle to have on hand to clean surfaces, bathrooms and spray bedsheets and pillows down if a dreaded bug has entered your home. Pop a couple of drops of Tea Tree or Eucalyptus in the wash to keep your clothes germ free and smelling fresh and clean. Don’t forget to put a few drops in your bucket to mop the floors with as well. For adult sore throats, mix a few drops of Lavender and Sandalwood in a carrier oil (e.g. Almond or Coconut) and massage on your throat and back of your neck several times a day until the pain subsides. When you have a strong immune system, you are less likely to get ill or if you do get caught
off guard your body will be able to easily defend itself. Essential oils help build your immune system to help you stay healthy when exposed to cold and flu viruses. The best oils to boost your immune system during the colder months are Lemon, Cedarwood and Eucalyptus. The winter months take a toll on your skin. For dry dehydrated skin you can make a blend in a carrier oil or balm of Frankincense, Sandalwood and Lavender to soothe and protect vulnerable skin, especially after it has been exposed to the harsh winter winds and freezing cold. Remember to get plenty of sleep and exercise, drink plenty of water and get some sunshine (when available) and fresh air each day. See a doctor if symptoms persist and I suggest seeing a good Naturopath and get some massages to help keep you happy and healthy. Happy Blending! *Essential Oil Safety - Do not use essential oils internally, unless under the supervision of a doctor or qualified Aromatherapy practitioner. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition, consult your doctor before using these products. Sharne Tam runs Aromatherapy workshops each quarter at Gnostic School of Higher Learning (see page 3). E: Aromatherapist@apothecarygoddess Tel: 0475 391 530.

TRAVEL BALI
G
ODS, MONKEYS AND COCONUTS – sums up a typical day in Bali. We went buying again today. Visited one of my friends that I buy from and she had just been released from hospital. She looked so weak, I didn’t like to ask what was wrong. When you shop with small business here, just like at home you make a difference. The relief on her and her husband’s faces was worth the little bit extra they needed to ask for. The full story… We have been travelling to Bali or Balinesia as I now like to call it – sounds much more exotic – for almost 15 years. It’s close by and only takes us 6 hours to reach by air. The Balinese have interesting handicrafts and the exchange rate of the AUS$ to IR makes things very affordable. I’m not the most business-like business person, so bartering is not one of my strong points. On the first visit I sensed something was wrong. I was trying to buy from the markets and nothing was priced, I was asking them the price and they were asking me the price? Nothing like Australia where items are labelled and it’s not popular to offer any less than the marked price. I soon realised there was a different game at play here, and when I came to think about it, this system could be fairer in a way, you go back and forward a few times and eventually you pay what you can afford and they accept what they need. Each transaction is different because each of the players is in a different situation. Nothing is fixed! I have been buying from Ketut who lives in a village behind the Monkey Forest at Ubud for maybe 5 years now. She has a small shop and sells things to supplement her family’s income while her husband drives tourists to see the island’s sites. We pay business price which is somewhere between wholesale and retail and usually it is good for us both. Sometimes we import between visits, this year there was some confusion and things got complicated with misunderstandings. The transaction ended up costing about 30% more than the original invoice. I told her I would sort it when I visited, my plan was to finalise this invoice and explain that I wouldn’t be able

to make any more orders. It’s one thing to be friendly but I need to be more businesslike. The day I arrived her son greeted me looking concerned and informed me that his mother has just been released from hospital, despite my request to leave her resting, he hurried off to get her. When Ketut appeared, she looked both sick and frightened, she moved slowly and looked very weak but still pleased to see me. Without hesitation I handed over the balance from the previous order and then quickly re-ordered more than I had before. Her husband arrived home to finish the transaction and as I gave him the money for the new order I could sense the relief from him and Ketut. I had a feeling this money was going to pay the hospital. I left quickly feeling completely overwhelmed with emotion. We aren’t big business and we don’t buy the most product for the cheapest price. But what we are able to do is continue a flow of prosperity and this improves the lives of those we deal with. – Mary H.

Vegan SmokEy Beans Ingredients 1 teaspoon of olive oil 1 brown onion diced 1 tin 400g whole tomatoes 1 tin of water 2 tin 400g Four Bean mix - rinsed. 1 teaspoon of crushed garlic 1 tablespoon of seeded mustard 1 tablespoon of maple syrup 1 tablespoon of tomato paste 1 tablespoon of brown sugar 1 teaspoon of balsamic reduction 1 teaspoon of Liquid Smoke*
Method
• Heat olive oil in medium sized saucepan, add diced onion • • • • • • • •
and garlic. Cook for 2 minutes or until onion has softened and become translucent. Add tinned tomatoes, using the same tomato tin, fill with water and add that to the saucepan. (This gets all the love out of the tomato tin and makes recycling less messy ) Add seeded mustard, maple syrup, tomato paste, brown sugar, balsamic reduction and smokey liquid. Give this a good stir through and turn heat down to a simmer for 20 minutes to reduce. Remove pot from the heat and let cool slightly. Using a handheld stick blender, blitz the tomato sauce until smooth. Return pot to the stove and add rinsed beans. Bring back to the boil then allow to simmer for 15mins before serving
This recipe is super versatile! You can add heat with cayenne pepper or chilli when cooking the onions. The beans will keep for 4-5 days in the fridge and can be frozen as well. *We buy our smoking liquid online from mistygully.com.au but if you can’t get your hands on any you can use 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika and add in with the onions in step 2.

Pastels are my choice of medium as they allow me to mix interesting blends of colour as portrayed in my work.

WELLBEING
Living Well during illness or injury
P
eople do not usually think about this subject unless they are in such a position themselves. Our culture, our society tends to glorify the healthy, wealthy, beautiful, young and mobile. How does one fit into this world if we are not in these categories? Even though only a small percentage of people fit the “ideal”. I propose one of the first ideas to entertain when one is either ill, injured, or in recovery is to see oneself as a valued member of society, a worthwhile, interesting person with perhaps, at the moment or even always, just enough energy to be able to sustain your life. That can be a great achievement some days! Being brave, being strong, working hard, putting in effort is an everyday occurrence for those of us who may have health challenges. Also, the idea that we create our own reality may be true and if so, that means that we also created everything in our reality which includes injury and illness in other people too. So, if we are creators of everything then we cannot blame or shame others for their behavior. We are all in this world together. One of the most important qualities to remember is compassion. Being kind and compassionate to ourselves as well as to others.
The idea of blaming oneself for your fate is not a useful or kind way to see your position. Everyone has life problems or challenges. Plus there are ways to assist your ill friend or family member to help relieve some of their suffering. Be willing to listen and allow them to tell their experience, to express themselves even if it is uncomfortable for you the listener. Remember it is way more hurting for them to live it than for you to hear it. Denying their pain is not a useful way to help. Another way is to offer some assistance but not to wait for them to ask. You can make suggestions such as shopping, cleaning, chatting, baby sitting etc.. People do not usually like to ask for help but may really need it. People with illness, injury or in recovery are just as worthy, just as wonderful, just as special as those without such challenges. We all have something to offer, something to give, to contribute. It just might look a bit different than you had once imagined. Susy Plummer and Tracey Selinger RN MN Health promotion, are offering a 4 week course on Living Well during illness and recovery at Gnostic Forest. TAROT D
id you know the tarot cards can be your daily guidance? Be Your best friend? Your spiritual educator? And the essence of helping you connect with your intuition? The Tarot is a helpful tool that is an age-old wisdom, created with knowledge passed down over centuries. I have illustrated, written the Annie Labri book to be Evolved guidance in accordance with traditional Tarot meanings. With 30 years’ tarot experience and as a professional artist I have channelled the imagery that has created a deck to define an easy understanding of the flow and essence of TAROT. Tarot traditionally has a 56 Minor and 22 Major Arcana cards. The word arcana means mysteries or secrets. The Minor arcana follows 4 suits, like our normal playing cards. Each of these suits then can follow both numerology sequences on our souls journey, both daily and lifetime. They follow the 4 elements Earth, air, water, fire, which also brings balance on all four aspects of our spiritual purpose. The court cards brings in the qualities of our four star-sign suits of the four elements. The Major Arcana depicts ancient rituals and higher guidance. Things we worship and are grateful for both daily, humanly and spiritually. Weaving our souls purpose meanings and speaks to us and our truth, bringing balance and understanding of our lessons and directions; Past, present, future! The tarot can inspire, motivate and help in many ways when understood , learnt and used with positive love. Annie Labri is Australia’s well known celebrity psychic medium. She is author, illustrator and publisher of Annie Labri Tarot 78 card deck and guidance to learn book. Annie will be providing a TAROT WORKSHOP @ Gnostic Forest on SUNDAY JUNE 24. YOGA
KEEP UP YOUR
WINTER PRACTICE
T
he Kapha dosha (energy that defines a persons makeup) dominates, and with its characteristics of coolness, dampness, heaviness and sluggishness it’s no wonder you want lock yourself away. In the colder months the natural instinct is to rug up in front of a fire-place with a warm cup of tea and hide away from the winter weather, the desire to hibernate has arrived! A nice but unrealistic notion! It’s very important to remember that winter is not a time to stop your Yoga practice, it’s time to change your practice in accordance with the season. You can’t escape what the universe is offering, your part of it, you still have to function and go about your daily life regardless of the weather. You can partially withdraw from life over winter but to do so you have to live an artificial life, fake heating, fake lighting, eating unseasonal foods, the list goes on. You may be able to exist like this but its false, this is not living, it’s out of step with the universe and it will have diminishing effects on your wellness. A winter practice helps you keep warm. Muscles produce heat in the body when they contract, the process of converting chemical energy to mechanical energy produces heat, this increases the flow of blood through your body, which keeps you warm. Intelligent movement will help prevent muscular-joint pain and stiffness, your immune system remains strong and in conjunction with a healthy diet will help prevent the usual winter illnesses.
The human body is meant to move, its that simple. As soon as mobility is lost, wellness declines. Have you noticed how people walk around in contracted bodies during winter, shoulders hunched, upper backs rounded and arms wrapped across the their chests all in an effort to maintain body heat. This “closed” gesture in movement will biomechanically destroy posture and at a deeper level prevent the flow of subtle energy throughout the body causing a decline in function and wellness. Dull, gloomy and cold weather may make you feel low and lethargic but there’s nothing more uplifting and mood changing than your regular Yoga practice. There is a science behind the sequencing of your Yoga class, hopefully your noticing that your practice has been altered to cater for the change in season. An intelligent and well structured Yoga sequence is easy to maintain in winter or any other time of the year if you maintain your motivation. You can stay strong and healthy if you keep moving and don’t allow the cold weather to hinder your practice. Stay warm, keep moving and be gentle with yourselves. ARTIST Keesha Goode – Intuitive Mandala Artist
M
andala is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘circle with essence’ and is a highly intricate symbol. In Eastern religion it represents the universe, and its creation is a sacred one, marked by ceremony. As a child I enjoyed drawing abstract and geometric designs and patterns. Over time I have developed my own process for working with Mandalas as living artworks. They are portals into the self and can be wonderful instruments for supporting personal growth. I have learnt to trust my inner guidance, therefore when I paint a personalised artwork, I tune into the energy of that person. For me, the creative process continues long after I have put down the paintbrush. When I sit with the Mandala, a new layer of understanding is revealed to me. Often my attention will be drawn to a particular colour and/or symbol which will unveil a significant and timely insight. I also encourage my clients to work with their Mandala in this way. Creating Mandalas is an absolute joy for me. It is a heartfelt experience that forever showers me with blessings. Ultimately, I feel that creating them for people is part of my purpose and for me; living with purpose is an essential key to happiness.

Business prospects also need to be attended to, although be careful of anyone wanting to take what is not theirs to take, or projects that seem too good to be true. On the other hand there are great opportunities around for those that want to start afresh. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Be very careful though, of who you trust and what they bring into your life. Trust your gut.
