LOCAL

MARGIN’s MUSHROOMS We chat with CHARLIE MARGIN about the family business Your family started the original Margin’s Softdrinks factory? Yes, Margin’s Softdrinks started operating in Muswellbrook back in the 1800’s. After years of manufacturing, two brothers moved from Muswellbrook to the Central Coast in the early 1900’s. My side of the family started a Softdrink factory in Woy Woy during 1914 and manufactured softdrinks till the mid 1980’s. The other brother moved to Gosford and started a softdrink factory there. So why Mushrooms now? We started growing them as a hobby in our family’s old ice coolroom and would give them to friends and relatives. It has nice thick walls and is the perfect environment to grow mushrooms. How long does the Mushroom cycle take from planting to harvest? Mushrooms have a high turnover rate. We try get 4 harvests from our rooms and go in an 8 week cycle. Generally we will grow and pick the mushrooms for one week then they will have a dormant week where nothing will grow. Then they will come on for a week and then have another week dormant period. The cycle will keep going if all the conditions are right. How many kilos and types do you produce? We produce 3 varieties of mushrooms: Whites, Browns and Oyster Mushrooms. We grow them to all different sizes and shapes too. What are the benefits of working in a family run business? We are a big team and can all draw on other people to help out. Mushroom farming is

very labour intensive and can be a massive job for just one person. How easy is it to compete with the large food chains for price, freshness and quality? We can’t compete with the larger organisations. They produce too many mushrooms at such a low cost that we just wouldn’t survive. So we tailored our business to match our needs. How many people are employed in your business and how long have you been established. We have been operating for over 8 years on this larger scale of business but we started growing mushrooms at home 10 years ago.. From when we first started it was a true family business. It was Mum, Dad, my younger brother george and myself. Now we have 3 fulltime staff members and probably 8-10 casual people we call upon to help with cleaning rooms out and replacing compost. Do you feel smaller businesses are able to strengthen communities in ways the larger companies are not able to? We are a large part of the community. We help with fundraisers, we donate mushrooms compost to different organisations, we run tour groups for Rotary groups and Probus. Whatever way we can we try and help out. Margin’s Mushroom Farm is open to the public from 9am to 12pm Monday – Saturday or when the Open signs are displayed out front. Lot 151,171 Woy Woy Rd, Woy Woy. TAO

T

aoists view the universe as the same as, or inseparable from, themselves so that Lao-tzu could say, “Without leaving my house, I know the whole universe.” This implies that the art of life is more like navigation than warfare, for what is important is to understand the winds, the tides, the currents, the seasons, and the principles of growth and decay, so that one’s actions may use them and not fight them.

PERSPECTIVE

CHOOSE ChanGE G

nostic – the ancient Greek word meaning knowledge gained by personal experience is as relevant today as it was over 2,000 years ago. We only really know what we have personally experienced, anything else is just hearsay. And what we do know and believe to be real is constantly changing. Even if we try to keep things constant they will always be shifting, a great example would be the sand at Ettalong, one day its here, the next day with external influence its somewhere else, and just like the sand on the foreshore we are all subject to external influence. Gnostic Corner has been shifting and changing during the 20 years since the first small Gnostic Forest shop opened where the Gnostic Wellness Centre stands today. We have drifted around the corner and attracted other businesses along the way. At one time there was a total of 9 businesses trading in our unofficial co-op. Our aim is to trade in a co-operative rather than competitive way. We like to compliment each other and offer our community a wide range of alternate services and products that they might not be able to source in other areas. You will find sales staff and practitioner’s ready to share their own “gnosis”. What we don’t have to offer is any kind of dogma, its all subjective, we share our opinions and if your experience and opinions differ they are respected and considered just as real as any other. Many people over the years have used this community and its space to help heal their lives and solidify their sense of self. In philosophical terms to “know thyself” is one of the greatest gifts there is. The 2nd greatest gift might be to allow others to “know” and be themselves, even if that is completely differ-

The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new. – Dan Millman

ent from the accepted norm. Most people are looking for love to create a comfortable life and real love is acceptance, if we can love and accept our changing selves we have a much better chance of treating others the same way. Most of the questions we have in life can be explained by watching nature, the beach does not resist the changing shoreline, and even if it did it would be futile. Instead nature ebbs and flows along with the changes and finds a new normal. In 1998 Spenser Johnson wrote Who Moved My Cheese, a really useful 32 page book that shows how resistant we humans can be to change. If we allow ourselves to have regret for an old past that no longer exists we cause suffering and depression. The habit of holding on rather than letting go builds a resistance to change and makes us uncomfortable when things are different. It is my wish that Gnostic Corner continues to shift and change, because it is only when things are changing they can improve. Mary Holstein – Founder of Gnostic Forest, passionate about the philosophy of change.

TIME TO

CLEANSE

W

e all know about Spring cleaning – I believe we should really be doing Spring Cleansing to change the energies within our homes and work places. Get the sage or sandalwood incense burning. If you have a drum, walk from room to room and make some noise. Noise is great to get energy moving. It’s also important to make changes in the home. Moving the furniture is a good way to do this. Take paintings from the wall and clean the back of them before rehanging. Hang them in different positions in the house. You could buy a new painting or print. Make regular changes in your home to keep the energy fresh. And don’t forget the children’s rooms. Remember they are growing and changing every day. It’s best not to put pictures, planes or boats over or near the beds. They are much too heavy to sleep under and may cause sleep problems.

When the seasons change I start at the letter box and give it a good cleansing, then it’s time for the front yard. Get the family together and encourage them to help with the garden. By working together the family’s energies and intentions are imprinted into the yard – sweep the doorstep and clean the front door. Welcome Spring into your home and all the blessings it brings. A few new cushions scattered through the house makes a big difference. Little changes can bring big changes to your home. Make room for the new things Mother Nature has to offer us. Just as the plants are springing new leaves, its a time for us to have new ideas. Write down what you want to grow in your life. If you don’t have a Rooster in your kitchen maybe this would be a good time to get one. Check your book case. Any titles that don’t put a smile on your face put them to the back. Only have items on show that make you smile. Remember we are writing our own and our family’s story, so make it a good one. Your wish is your command, so go for it! Spring RitualS I

f there were ever a time that truly supported health, wellness and personal development it would for sure be the season of Spring! Spring is indeed the phase of transformation and growth, a refreshing phase to renew your energy and enrich your life. The rhythms of the seasons are embraced in Traditional Chinese Medicine as significant segments for the welfare of all living creatures. When we appreciate the four seasons we can understand the meaning of life in the rhythms of nature. Spring, in particular is an important period for cleansing and rejuvenation, an opportunity for dynamic growth and inspiration. Spring is a time for new beginnings and expansion. Bring this into your own life and make spring the perfect season to start planting the seeds to follow through with ideas and implement changes. This is the perfect time to detox your body and spring clean your home and workplace. Spring Routine According to Chinese medicine, this season is all about action, drive and new commencements. Help support the physical and mental adaptability of this purifying and productive period by bathing, vaporising and

having a lymphatic drainage massage using the pure essential oils of rosemary, grapefruit, coriander, juniper berry, orange, lemon and geranium. Spring Nutrition Your springtime diet should contain more liver and gallbladder cleansing foods; green leafy salads, lightly stir-fried vegetables, fresh fruits, and seaweeds, bitter herbs and vegetarian soups. I like to include a daily dose of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, spirulina tonics, dandelion, and chicory root tea. Make an effort to begin your day with a glass of lemon or lime juice in warm purified water to introduce a natural digestive aid into your stomach, contributing to a well-functioning digestive system. In the evening time it is nice to brew up a pot of a detoxifying dandelion, nettle, fennel, aniseed, burdock, licorice root, damiana and turmeric tea to effectively cleanse the blood and support the detoxification process prior to sleep. ROCKS

Moldavite The CRystal from outer space Take your mind back in time – just 12-15 million years ago, or so…

Imagine a 1km wide meteorite, having hurtled through the void of space for an indeterminate amount of time, having the exact right trajectory to strike Earth. Current-day Germany was the unlucky meteor lottery “winner” in this event and it actually did happen! It left in its place a 24 km wide crater between Stuttgart and Munich. More interesting than the big hole in the ground was the mysterious green mineral that was sprayed across into the Czech Republic as a result. In the moments before impact, a forceful stream of compressed hot air proceeding this hulking space tourist blasted the land surface. Molten hot material formed from Quartz rich soil and sprayed up into the lower atmosphere then cooling as it fell. The result of this sky pudding is called Moldavite (or Vltavin in Czech). Classed as a Tektite, its prized for its handsome green varieties and unusual surface patterns. Moldavites associations with mystery are many. Some of which are the Holy Grail (it’s said to have been a feature stone within it) and The Venus of Willendorf (reportedly specimens were found with statues of this stone age creator goddess in Austria.) Some report to feel connected to the universe when holding it. It is certainly a weird and wild thing to view. Its amazing texture evokes thoughts of the heat and velocity that created it. Fake specimens have been appearing in that last few years. Be aware of bright and wet looking specimens, uniform shaped pieces and oversized material. Larger specimens are expen-

A large museum grade specimen A miner in one of the Moldavite pits. It can be found up to 15 metres deep in some areas but most pits are just a few metres deep.

sive and rare! True Moldavite has microscopic air bubbles of varying shapes and sizes from its intense beginnings and lechatelierite (molten silica glass) inclusions that help to differentiate it from fakes. Whether your appreciation of Moldavite is born from its intense origin story or a sense of something more esoteric, what cannot be questioned is its magnetic and unusual beauty. Come in and see our specimens of this fascinating mineral at Gnostic Rocks, Woy Woy. G

CHANGE

Take off the ‘comfy’ clothes…

You know the ones. The old faithful, mooching around the house outfit. The one that you’ve had forever. It’s the t-shirt that’s beyond well worn and the slouchy pants that are splitting at the seams. They’re too small, falling apart and if you’re honest, they’re not very comfortable anymore... yet you cling to them anyway. Now you could splurge and buy yourself a new outfit... but what if it’s not as comfy? What if you can’t find the right size? What if they don’t have the colour you want? You’ve grown accustomed to your old faithfuls. The idea of the new and different feels paralysingly overwhelming. Change is uncomfortable. Our brains want to keep us safe by keeping us in the known. Yet as Neale Donald Walsch says “Life starts at the end of your comfort zone!”

G 14

Living a big, bold, authentic life means stepping outside your comfort zone. It requires the courage to shake things up, allowing yourself to be seen in ways that trigger some uncomfortable feelings. The discomfort will be short lived and beyond is the elation of freeing yourself from fear. Pushing the limits of your comfort zone doesn’t have to be scary. It can be fun and exciting, like playing dress-ups. Feeling the childlike joy of discovering a new you by putting on an outfit that’s different to your normal, everyday clothing. I’m not saying throw out your old faithfuls. Just don’t get trapped in them. Give yourself permission to wear a new outfit and see how it feels. – Lauren Monty Instagram: @lauren_monty_xo

MANAFOOD

Dukkah

Dukkah (Pronounced DOO-kah) gets its name from the Egyptian Arabic word ‘to crush’ or ‘to pound’. Recipes can vary a lot but generally consist of cumin, coriander and nuts.

Although traditional with sesame seeds, there are few limits to adding and subtracting ingredients to suit yourself and your pantry.

Dukkah is so aromatic and versatile. It can be added as a garnish or left chunky and eaten as a snack. A welcome texture to add to a dip plate, dipping bread in olive oil and dunking it into dukkah. Yum! Why not try making your own batch at home and get creative! Ingredients

Cashews 300g Almonds 100g u Walnuts 100g u Cumin seeds 1 teaspoon u Coriander seeds 1/2 teaspoon u Salt and Pepper u Turmeric (Optional) u u

ABOVE: Dukkah Breakfast @ Gnostic Mana Cafe. Turkish Toast topped with smashed avocado, poached eggs, fetta, house made dukkah, pepitas and turmeric.

art@MANA

Gnostic Mana Cafe features monthly exhibitions from the Central Coast’s leading artists. SEPTEMBER: Stacy Polock This is a collection of works which I have energetically channelled for the beautiful souls within us. I am very passionate about creativity and started doodling from as young as infants school. My excitement for creativity grew over time when we were given assignments, purely so I could creatively play in their presentations. Fast forward to now, with 15 years of spiritual work, supporting my creative journey, I can channel and be a channel for energy which I bring through into the artwork I am creating. When I channel a space’s energy or person’s energy, the journey I am taken on through generating their artwork, is magical and a blessing to be able to create it for them.

OCTOBER: Cath Grant This is my tenth solo exhibition. It combines colourism and pointillism. Painting for me is the alphabet of everything that leads to Zen. My pointillism style stems from a personal philosophy that every point of view counts. Like strands through a tapestry, lives are interwoven with other lives forming a diverse and colour laden pattern that is as random as it is rich with the pulse of life. We are all interconnected. I am an internationally selling artist who is based on the Central Coast. www.cathgrant.com.

NOVEMBER: Lorraine Van Epen My theme for my art display is “Sea Magic”. I think it is befitting of the area. I have always loved nature and most of my work is about nature. I have tried to capture the wonderful colours under the sea with the fish and seahorses. The seahorses are made from shells I have collected locally and in Tasmania. We all experience difficult times in our lives and I find art is good therapy. The ocean is one place where I gain peace and inspiration. I hope you enjoy my art as much as I have enjoyed creating it. G

Asian Bazaar FRIENDS OF GNOSTIC

I

, Mohammad Yousuf Baktoo, was born in the Valley of Kashmir, Northern part of India, in the most happiest family with little sources of trade. Carrying on great grand father’s trade of running houseboats and trekking expeditions in Kashmir established since 1927. I slowly expanded the family business into other parts of India and travelled the world promoting tourism to India. I migrated to Australia in 1989 and fell in love with this place and decided to establish Asian Bazaar as a Handicraft importing company. I came across a very beautiful flower shop in East Gosford and a very interesting lady Mary Holstein and started trading with the Gnostic Forest Family. Soon after, the shop was sold and Mary and her family relocated to a new business in Bateau Bay approximately 22 years ago. Since that time we have been continuously supplying them with Indian Gifts and Homewares at their Stores. The Gnostic Family took their business to the next level and opened Gnostic Forest in Woy Woy which has become famously known as the Gnostic Corner. I see Emily Holstein, Mary’s daughter who used to be a teenager at that time and watching her mother buying the products from me for their shop. Slowly the trust and loyalty developed between us. We have enjoyed working with the Gnostic Family as we understand their aim and their interest is to develop good relationship with G

their customers and community. We noted time to time that they have been enjoying dealing with the locals and tourist alike. I felt to invite them to show them my culture that I was coming from and decided to operate small groups into India and Nepal, where Mary and Emily joined one of my buying tours so they can well understand the nature of the product that they are selling, which made me very proud to show them my part of the world. I took them through the interesting parts of India, showed them the factories where the product is being developed and through the small villages where the families are working on the products. Since then they have understood Indian culture and they have been continuously buying from India, which is a great help to a lot of families who are developing many products and making their livelihood for their families. I hope it continues in the near future. I wish them all the best success in their business. Our continuous support will always be there!

Scent is one of the most powerful influences. Certain essential oils are aphrodisiacs and libido enhancers for both women and men. Essential oils can also be used for PMS, Period Pains, PCOS, Menopause, Endometriosis, lack of Libido and Impotence. The ancient Egyptians used aromatic oils to promote health, beauty, fertility, virility and of course romance. The Greeks and other cultures learnt from the Egyptians exactly how to use essential oils to increase passion, and this expertise quickly spread across the world. As every person is different, so is every couple. What scent we are attracted to can be quite different than our partners preference. Its about experimenting, trying different blends to see what works for you both. Some of the most popular aphrodisiac oils used in aromatherapy today include: – Boosts confidence, Helps fight depression & boosts Libido, Heals emotional wounds. – Soothing, Euphoric and Hypnotic. Relaxes the nerves and lifts the spirit. – Men especially love this scent! Relaxing & Calming, Sensual and Boosts Libido. – Anxiety reducer, PMS symptoms, Helps with communication and Balances hormones. – Stimulates hormones, Helps overcome fatigue, also a favourite Libido enhancer with men. Use Patchouli oil to recapture the ‘60s decade of Love! Essential oils can be a great mood setter for a special romantic occasions. You can use essential oils in various ways, depending on the occasion. Some suggestions for use might be in the bath, in a massage lotion, in an essential oil diffuser in

the house and especially in the bedroom. One of the quickest ways in which the aroma of an essential oil can have an effect on the body is by inhalation through the nose, because the nose has direct contact with the brain. Simply put, when you inhale an essential oil an area of the brain called the Limbic System is stimulated, and this is the part of the brain where moods and emotions are governed. The inhalation of an aroma triggers varying emotional and physical responses in people and the aphrodisiac essential oils have the ability to invoke romantic feelings. Remember that essential oils are not the cure all for everything. You need to make sure that you get some relaxing, uninterrupted time and slow down your life enough to get enough rest, relaxation and nourish your body with wholesome and nutritious food. Want to learn more? Come to my Scent & Sensuality workshop at the Gnostic Forest on Sunday the 7th of October at 1pm and join in the fun. You will be provided with a printed booklet of all the info and we make a spray just for you to take home. Happy Blending! *Essential Oil Safety - Do not use essential oils internally, unless under the supervision of a doctor or qualified Aromatherapy practitioner. TRAVEL MOROCCO

A

fter the extremes and the excitement of Eurovision in Portugal, waking up in Morocco was a complete contrast. The sensory overload created by the colourful costumes and loud music in the modern arena in Lisbon has been replaced by an equally mesmerizing array of scents from the overloaded baskets of the spice market inside the ancient Medina. We arrived yesterday evening as the sun was beginning to set and the tempers were starting to rise. The month of Ramadan is in full swing, and with religious observance the majority of the population abstain from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Apparently it is quite common for minor fights to breakout as the day endures and hunger sets in. Only a little while longer and they will break the fast for today. The smell of food being prepared fills the air. We are told families will stay up into the small hours eating and drinking then sleep for a short time before resuming fasting at daybreak. This cycle continues for an entire month – the idea being to build resistance to the temptations of the world. Our past two weeks were filled with people entertaining those temptations. The European world (plus for some reason Australia), come together annually to sing and dance their hearts out in the Olympic style talent quest called Eurovision. The winner is always controversial, and nobody seems to mind at all! Travelling is such a great way to explore the differences between cultures. With wide eyes and open hearts we have learned through experience to respect a variety of different types of people. In recent years we have seen the acceptance of nature when we witnessed flooding in Sri Lanka.

Sunset over Chefchaouen, Morocco

The people who have little on western scales are better able to cope with natural disaster it would seem. They have less emotion to the shifts and changes that their fragile life can bring. Everybody just got in and helped, they didn’t wait for government or foreign aid. In one town we saw the locals using a tractor to drag the broken down cart out of the flow of water, and all the while the baby calmly slept at his mothers breast on the back seat. Last year we were welcomed into the Mexican community in Oaxaca for the fabulous Dia De Muertos, the annual celebration which dates back centuries to the Aztec Goddess Mitecacihautl the queen of the underworld. In current times the festival is dedicated to honouring ancestors and praising life. We watched as they sang, danced, prayed and cried. All the emotions expressed with equal vigour. Back in Morocco there are some camels waiting to take us into the desert. In a few days we will make our way through the High Atlas Mountains to the lonely sands of the Western Sahara. We will meet the Berber people who have inhabited these mountains since the first millennia, they have continued to use their own language and alphabet despite invasions from Greece, Egypt, Roman and Ottoman empires. After a couple of days in the desert we then travel 18, 000 km and 29 hours back to the reality of modern Australia. As I look around the ancient market place called a Medina in the old Moroccan capital of Rabat it is impossible to imagine a more distant, different culture. But then I haven’t been everywhere yet. – Mary H. G

YOGA

INTERVIEW

JOHN WILSON & KIM Griffiths

from Peninsula Yoga on Gnostic in Woy Woy How long have you been teaching yoga? KIM: I started practicing yoga 12 years ago with John Wilson at Peninsula Yoga on Gnostic. After studying with Mark O’Brien at Qi Health &Yoga Sydney and obtaining my 400+ Hour Yoga Teacher training and Philosophy Diploma. I continued studies with Mysan Sidbo and obtained my 100 Hour Yin Teacher training Diploma. I started teaching at Peninsula Yoga on Gnostic February 2018. JOHN: I’ve been teaching yoga for 15 years. My situation is a bit different to most in that I literally started teaching (in a supervised way) about 6 weeks after I started practicing. What brought you to begin practicing? KIM: I’ve always been a lover of all things natural, artistic, magical and health related, so yoga found me. I was 17 years old at the time, about to sit the HSC. I could feel the added pressure and stress that surrounded not only myself but my friends so we signed up to a general yoga class with John to aid in freeing some of the weight from our shoulders. Instantly I fell in love with the welcoming warmth and healing it brought me from just one class and have been practicing, seeking and learning ever since. JOHN: I was introduced to yoga movement practises by a chiropractor who was treating me for a back injury, he thought that gentle yoga movement in conjunction with chiropractic treatment would help my condition, he was right. During my first class I felt an incredible surge of energy run through my body, I discovered later that this was a “kundalini” experience, I was hooked from that first class. I knew this was where I belonged, I’d found my dharma. G

26

What ideas about yoga were totally transformed when you actually started to do it? KIM: It was really the ideas about my self that the practice of yoga transformed in me. I’ve learnt to accept myself. Which ultimately changed my whole life perspective. I am more focused, balanced; free; have the ability to be open to people. I find I am more positive, calmer, energized. I have gained a greater sense of belonging within the world. Yoga philosophy is very grounding and it offers direction. JOHN: Yoga has totally changed the way I feel about my body and mind. I much more kinder to myself and others. I move my body gently and correctly through yoga and other exercise, I fuel it with nourishing food and allow it to rest when needed which has given me a healthy portal to live in hopefully for a while to come. As far as the mind goes I was always my own worst critic, I still become angry, judgemental and critical of not only others but myself. The difference is now I can forgive and I understand that everyone has their own journey and responds to situations based on their own experiences. Everyone has a story. I’ve certainly learnt how the body and mind are inseparable and each affects the other, whatever is happening in the

mind will be reflected in the body and whatever is happening in the body will be reflected in the mind. Relaxation techniques help me remain calm, in control and much more discerning than in the past. How has yoga changed the way you feel about your body and mind? KIM: I suffered with body image, self esteem, self-acceptance, self LOVE for most of my teenage and early adult years. I first encountered yoga as very much a physical practice. If I am completely honest about it, I let myself be ruled by my mind or more so the words I spoke to it. I pushed myself to the absolute limit with no regard to what it was doing to my physical body let alone my mind. Ultimately our mind can hold the power to affect how healthy our body is. I began to notice how all of my actions, thoughts, and choices would reflect on my body. I could make choices that helped me breathe easy and open my heart, or caused more suffering. Yoga taught me I wasn’t just a part of the conversation. I was the direct line of conversation and every day I have the power to decide how that conversation will go. JOHN: I wish people generally would understand that yoga is not a religion. To practice yoga you don’t have to be either a contortionist or a Zen monk, you don’t have to be flexible, mobile or of a specific gender, wear particular clothes, or have a particular diet. If you can feel and breath there is a class suitable to you! Who are your favourite people to teach yoga to? KIM: Those who show up to the mat not knowing what is going to happen but know that’s okay! I’m so blessed to practice with teach and stand beside a group of yogis of different ages, races, genders, sizes with different weaknesses & strengths different beliefs & fitness levels. My favourite people to teach are the willing, the seekers, those craving knowledge, freedom, connection, movement those with the motivation to learn and grow with me. JOHN: My favourite people to teach are those who are willing to drop the dreaded ego, have a genuine willingness to improve their wellness and laugh a lot.

What would you say to someone who thinks yoga isn’t for them? KIM: Be brave enough to try something new! Don’t be afraid to fail, be afraid not to try. Regardless of your flexibility, age, gender, or body shape, yoga welcomes everyone to the mat and it offers effective ways to meet your goals by strengthening and purifying the body, through the assistance of both physical postures and breathing techniques. Don’t become scared to move around due to the fear of physical pain or fear of failing. The worst thing you can do for yourself is stop moving. I invite you to journey with me into self exploration & conscious healing that will guide you on the way to balanced and happy life living to your fullest potential whilst gaining a deeper understanding of your practice and ability. JOHN: The original teachings of yoga have been hijacked as some people in the West strive for commercial market share. Don’t get caught up in the marketing hype – search for genuine teachers who are offering the real deal without the westernised add ons which are watering down and making a mockery of authentic yoga. Yoga is for everyone! G
