PERSPECTIVE

The GNOSTIC HUG I

t has become a thing – the Gnostic Hug! It started out as a simple greeting with someone who was recognised. In the mid 1900’s you would greet someone with a warm handshak. This was common for males and to not offer your hand in reply was interpreted as a refusal, a disrespect and the highest insult. The etiquette was that a man waited for a lady to offer her hand before he raised his for a handshake. Time moved on, the 1960’s saw the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, people grew their hair, the music got louder, and everything became less structured. Peace and love were in the air, which meant the formal handshake seemed less friendly and people began to embrace each other more often. Our culture is a funny thing. Something that was seen as a symbol of respect in one generation – the handshake – was now considered formal and a sign that you were just acquaintances not really close friends. For a few decades the hug belonged to the Hippies, those strange unconventional fringe dwellers that had no shoes and ate sprouts. And then in the late 1900’s the Gnostic Forest appeared in the village of Woy Woy. Not really hippies but these unusual people were far from the mainstream of the society. They dressed colourfully, opened shop each morning with a greeting and a hug, they worked alongside each other all day, dealing with the public, sales reps and customers alike, and then at the end of the day they thanked each other with another hug. Inside the little shop they were selling incense, self-help books, they offered alternate healings like reiki and massage, things the mainstream was a little wary about. At night they gathered to meditate which confused traditional religions, churches were on alert as to what might come next? Would they start to gather at full moons? The strangest part of their behaviour was this

hugging business, every morning and every night – it appeared that they genuinely liked each other! Meanwhile the other world was listening to the news, eating poor food and dragging their compromised immune systems to work each day, often to toxic environments where they worked alongside people they often barely tolerated. There was no hugging. The “Gnostics” started to spread around a place being referred to as Gnostic Corner, they opened a café Gnostic Mana and offered food that was prepared in a mindful way. There were reports the hugging had spread to the kitchen. Time moved on again, by now it was the early 21st Century and these people no longer seemed so strange. They had a Healing Centre and a Yoga School, at one time an Organic shop and even a Hemporium. Repetition creates a new norm, and local people in the village no longer stared when they saw the hugging, often it went unnoticed. Then gradually, no-one remembers the first day, however, just like the banana peeling monkeys the locals began to hug. A hug can be interpreted many ways, this unspoken language is saying ‘I accept you’. In the mornings it can mean ‘here we go, let’s do this’. In the afternoons it can mean ‘I forgive you, we all did our best’ – or at the café between people who meet ‘where have you been? I missed you’ The benefit of the hug is not limited to those offering and receiving, it encourages connecting in our communities. Mary Holstein – the creator of Gnostic Forest and the grateful receiver of many hugs.

TIMBEr: RECYCLE REUSE W

e’re all aware of the issues surrounding the environment and concerned with what is happening to our planet. Through this awareness it’s becoming common practice to recycle and reuse, wherever possible. But as of 2019 it has been reported that we Australians produce 67 million tonnes of waste every year! Over 600,000 tonnes, almost 10%, of waste from Australia was being exported to China to recycle materials for their industry, but as of January 1 this year this is no longer the case. What was once stockpiled for export recycling will be dumped into landfill because, as yet, there is insufficient infrastructure to stockpile the excess waste. It may take some time before alternative solutions are found. One major problem from the result of landfill is the creation of tonnes of methane gas escaping into the atmosphere, increasing the effects of global warming. It is more important than ever for us to be diligent about recycling and consider sustainability options. With the use of, or rather, re-use of, one particular waste product, there are several environmental benefits to be gained. That waste product is timber. By reusing timber, the service life is extended reducing the need for a new product and also reduces any greenhouse gas emissions that are created from having to farm and mill new timber, although it uses small amounts of energy in the manufacturing process compared to plastic and metal. In addition, the carbon contained within the recycled timber is stored for the life of the wood. Recycled timber can be reused, or remanufactured, into a large range of useful products or even used as bioenergy, displacing the use of greenhouse intensive fossil fuels. Reuse and recycling wood packaging, such as pallet timber, can result in reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. For example 670 kg

of carbon dioxide (equivalent) is saved for each tonne of wood packaging diverted from landfill. The amount of waste we create is something that requires serious re-thinking and serious action, and as individuals we have the power to do something about helping the planet, its atmosphere and its biodiversity and in turn making life better for ourselves. So why not think of how you can “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle?” Deja New Palletable Creations is a firm believer in such an ethos, which is the core of our business. As the name suggests our focus is on reusing and “upcycling” the timber from pallets, using only heat treated timber, which is free from toxic chemicals, ensuring our products are safe for all purposes. Our business is also more than just about recycling timber, we only use eco-friendly finishes, our products are created from GreenPower Energy and a percentage of every sale goes towards conservation of native wildlife and their habitats through the National Parks and Wildlife Foundation. – Alan H If you’re looking for a unique, eco-friendly, custom made product you can contact Alan through Facebook, on mobile 0403 979 972 or email at dejanewpalletablecreations@gmail.come. ake a look around you – whatever you see is part of creation. There are forces unseen constantly influencing the world you experience as reality. We take this fact for granted, believing things simply are the way they are! Yet, every day we participating in creation. We do this without pausing to think about how our existence is both informed by and informing our experiences. American author spiritualist and teacher Florence Scovel Shinn said in her book The Game of Life and How to Play it: ‘The game of life is a game of boomerangs. Our thoughts, deeds and words return to us sooner or later with astounding accuracy.’ You are part of this creation and you are also playing your part as co-creator. That puts privilege and responsibility closer than you might realise. It is a privilege to be involved in this magical process and then there is also responsibility to use your own power of creation to act wisely. Recognise the fact that in every moment you are creating the future you will experience. Your

thoughts, deeds and words tell the universe what you want more of. By using clear intention and ensuring all actions are supporting that intention the future is bound to unfold towards your desires. Take a look around the microcosm of Gnostic Corner. You are witnessing creation at work. With clear intention after 20 years of growth, we decided to sell some of our businesses. We put the above principles into action and moved forward every day towards creating the future we desired. Visualising the person or people who would take Gnostic to the next level, excited in the change and having faith that the new situation would benefit everyone involved. In this issue we introduce Kara Wilkinson as the new owner of some of the Gnostic Businesses. Kara worked with us previously – 8 years ago – and now returns to continue the Gnostic Creation! By witnessing our experience, we hope you will be inspired to guide your future into the creation you desire. Namaste. – Mary and Emily

WELLNESS

Gua Sha & Facial Cupping Y outhfulness, everybody wants it, visually if not mentally. Gua Sha is the Chinese medicine answer to turning back time for your face! A form of facial treatment, it uses gentle stimulation, accupuncture, accupressure and massage to revitalise skin texture, blood flow and apperance by reducing puffiness and age spots. The ancient Chinese practioners discovered that many meridians of blood and energy in the body either begin or end in the face, with others have internal branches that travel to the face, hence the connection with how our health influences our facial appearance. With pressure on these acupuncture points on the face and body, the increased circulation of blood and energy rejuvenate the skin while simultaneously treating the underlying factors that contribute to the ageing process. By massaging on certain areas, we can improve circulation and in turn affect a variety of conditions. Hayfever and congestion can even be treated by these methods. Crystal tools are used to perform facial acupressure, usually Jade, Rose quartz or Agate. These are

either flat with smooth rounded edges or shaped like a wand. Different crystals also have individual healing properties in their own right and are used in conjunction. Facial Cupping uses gentle suction with soft plastic cups, enhancing circulation and toning the facial muscles. No marks are left on the face with this technique as only a light pressure is applied to the face in a slow repetitive scraping and lifting motion, contouring muscles and stimulating elasticity. Acupuncture points are stimulated during the process. As with any therapy, it is essential to find an experienced practitioner, in this case, registered in Chinese Medicine through AHPRA, for best results. In turn, acupressure points on the face can also target digestive issues, fatigue, gum problems, headaches, sleep disorders, stress relief, and improved facial muscle tone. Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive. – Dalai Lama

THE CYCLE OF LIFE T

wice this week, I have watched an elderly individual, fade into the busy life in which we all live. One man just needed Panadol for his wife but the shop assistant simply said it’s in ‘6’. But he struggled to navigate the supermarket and as I watched him go in the wrong direction, I left all my groceries and took him where he needed to go. Today, I watched an elderly man struggle in the heat, who had obviously had a fall with a huge scrape and blood on his leg. He walked past people in the cafe, and slowly made his way to his car. Not one person stopped. Or looked.

Grow your mind! Inspiring Speakers on Wednesday mornings 10am at Gnostic Forest Chambers Place, Woy Woy

Or acknowledged him. I took him to his car and checked he was okay. He told me he had a fall and wasn’t sure how the air con worked in his car so he just didn’t use it. I sat with him, until his air con kicked in and heard him talk about the old frail body that he is in, that fails him now, every single day. When you see an elderly person walking down the street, searching in the supermarket or struggling to their car, take a minute out of your busy schedule and ask them if they need a hand. Think about your grandparents and your parents and how pissed you would be if someone didn’t stop to help them. But more, think of them as you. Not so very long ago they were you. They were busy, they had work, they had children, they were able. Today, they are just in an older body that is not going as fast as it used to and this busy life is so confusing. They deserve our utmost respect and consideration. One day it will be you, it will be us. I wish more people gave a thought about them and acknowledged them for their admirable existence and geez – I hope someday, not that far away, someone does it for me. WELLNESS

Do you have a cocktail of infections?

The immune system’s reaction to pathogens is far more destructive to the body than microbes or antigens. Environmental Toxins Set the Stage for Disease We all are contaminated with huge amounts of toxins – this unhealthy “terrain” of our bodies sets the stage for us to become sick from pathogenic microbes and other factors. These toxins act as a favourable growth medium for the wide variety of microbes that we are all infected with. The toxins that we find to be key in contaminating the body and weakening the immune system are: mercury, lead, aluminium and glyphosate. Glyphosate is a chemical that is sprayed on food which is a key ingredient of Roundup herbicide. What’s more, the damaging effect of these toxins is far greater when the toxins are combined. For instance, there is a synergistic effect between aluminium and mercury, and aluminium and glyphosate. When these are all present in the body, they really damage it. This, in turn, causes the microbes to become aggressive and pathogenic and ultimately cause chronic illness as the body’s terrain becomes increasingly contaminated. Glyphosate plays a key role in this process. It is found everywhere in the environment and is very damaging to the microbiome (or the community of beneficial microbes that live in the body). It is among other things, a chelator, which means that it removes precious trace minerals from the body so that the body can’t absorb them. Glyphosate also acts as a “door opener” for aluminium, rather than a chelator, and so facilitates the absorption of toxic aluminium from the gut into the body. Rainwater has been known to contain aluminium, titanium, barium and strontium. Aluminium Protects Microbes in the Blood Vessels Researchers have discovered that toxic aluminium settles largely in the endothelium, or the inner lining of the blood vessels. Several published studies on inflammation of the inner lining of the blood vessels, such as “The infectious etiology of vasculitis” which was published in Autoimmunity in 2009, have shown that Lyme-related organisms are found in abundance throughout the blood vessel lining. Here, they are well protected by a solid layer of fibrin and biofilm. Fibrin is a fibrous protein involved in blood clotting, while biofilm is a “slime” of sorts which the microbes use to cloak themselves and hide from the immune system. From this, we’ve learned that microbes, which G 14

primarily grow in the blood vessels, are protected from the immune system by aluminium and other heavy metals. This means that when you remove the aluminium from the blood vessels and detoxify the body of aluminium, you will remove one of the microbes’ protective mechanisms and greatly increase the number of Lyme-related pathogens that can no longer have a “foothold” in the body and remain protected by the endothelium. This fact is relatively unknown by the medical community. Borrelia spirochetes also exist in the body’s connective tissue and inside the neurons of the nervous system (intra-neuronally) as well as inter-neuronally (or between the neurons). The Lyme pathogens primarily affect and upregulate the immune system and create havoc inside the blood vessel lining. Organic and inorganic mercury are similarly damaging to the body. The results of a relatively successful treatment that was used to treat syphilis until 1945 (syphilis is a Borrelia-related illness) showed that mercury is actually a medicine for spirochete illnesses because it actually keeps the microbes from replicating. Mercury has also been used until recently as an effective anti-inflammatory remedy, and it is used in medications such as Mercurochrome. So interestingly, the more mercury that there is in the body, the less inflammation there is and the less active the microbes will be. Mercury destroys the brain and neurological system, but not through the process of inflammation, so people who have high levels of heavy metal toxicity can slowly die without a lot of pain or symptoms. But practitioners have found that once we remove the mercury from the body, the Lyme spirochetes actually become more active – and paradoxically – easier to treat. Coriander and Ionic Footbaths: More Effective than EDTA for Heavy Metal Removal Coriander-ionic footbath therapy preferentially eliminates toxic chemicals from the body. The kidneys secrete the greatest amount of toxins on the third day following a 30-minute footbath. Therefore, it may be best to do this treatment only twice weekly in order to prevent overwhelming the kidneys with toxins.

Coriander tincture is given followed by the ionic footbath. Detoxification of Glyphosate with Humic and Fulvic Acids, Berries and Other Substances This protocol is partly based on published research, which shows that certain compounds, such as humic and fulvic acid minerals, bind with glyphosate in the gut and help to carry it out of the body. Three types of berries are shown to turn on the body’s natural detoxification mechanisms and better enable it to remove glyphosate. They are pomegranate, the North American plum and acai. We recommend these berries to heal the inner lining of the blood vessels Finally, to detox glycosophate, we recommend sauna therapy because many of the organophosphates and fat-soluble chemicals that are stored in the body are heat volatile and will evaporate out of it through the sweat. Selenium, vitamin C and vitamin E to be helpful for detoxifying glyphosate. To mobilize toxic chemicals in the gut, we also recommend that our patients take a special form of zeolite. Chronic Infections can travel and affect any part of the body. The following list is list of possible symptoms: • Migratory pain in the joints, muscles or nerves is a classic feature of some infections. • Breast pain • Breathlessness, ‘air hunger’ • Burning, numbness, stabbing or tingling sensations • Carpel tunnel syndrome • Chest wall pain or sore ribs • Confusion, difficulty thinking, difficulty with attention and concentration, focus and reading, problem absorbing new information and searching for words and names • Conjunctivitis • Constipation alternating with diarrhoea • Dental pain • Disorientation: getting lost, going to wrong places • Double or blurred vision with floaters • Ear pain, hearing problems, such as buzzing, ringing or decreased hearing • Erectile dysfunction • Exaggerated symptoms or worse hangover from alcohol • Facial paralysis-Bell’s Palsy • Fainting • Fever and chills • Forgetfulness, poor short- term memory • Flu-like feeling • Headaches • Head and sinus congestion • Heartburn • Heart murmur or valve prolepses, heart palpitations or skips

• Increased motion sickness • Irritable bladder • Insomnia, fractionated sleep, early awakening, excessive night time sleep, napping during the day, fatigue, tiredness • Jaw (temporomandibular) disorders • Joint pain, stiffness and/or swelling in ankles, back, elbows, fingers, knees, shoulders, hips, toes and/or wrists. • Light and sound sensitivity • Loss of libido • Low abdominal pain and cramps • Macular oedema • Muscle weakness, pain and cramps • Nausea and queasiness • Neck pain, creaks and cracks • Night sweats • Numbness in the arms and/or legs • Pain in genital area • Persistent swollen glands • Poor stamina • Recurring Herpes/Zoster/Shingles • Skin hypersensitivity and /or rashes • Sore soles of the feet (especially in the morning) • Sore throat • Sudden hair loss • Tremors • Twitching of the face or other muscles • Unexplained back pain • Unexplained chronic cough • Unexplained menstrual irregularity or milk production • Unexplained shooting pains • Unexplained weight gain or loss • Vertigo, spinning, off balance, light-headedness Symptoms may change and come and go for several years. The objective for us as practitioners in summary is to: • Strengthen the patient’s foundations and support their channels of elimination • Reduce their patients’ toxin levels to make their entire system more functional • Teach their patients protective measures against electro-smog • Balance their immune system • Balance their basic chemistry and correct nutritional and hormonal deficiencies • Reduce their bodies’ burden of microbes, including the most persistent forms of the organisms. Gnostic Mana Cafe features monthly exhibitions from the Central Coast’s leading artists. MARCH: Stephnie Sell Nourish your soul immersed in a world of reimagined objects. My name is Stephnie Sell and I love to experiment with mixed media to create pictorial stories. I lose myself in the process of combining a mix of new and old objects, adding textures and colours resulting in creations that like a black opal change character under different qualities of light. I hope you lose yourself in closely observing the works and find pleasure in exploring the various motifs and themes. As Thomas Merton said “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time”.

APRIL: Seya Hashemi I was born in Sharray which is a small city near the capital of Iran, Tehran. When I was a child, I always used to watch my father draw pictures of a small fox. While watching him, I practiced hard and knew I had to draw the fox better than he could. Even in those days, I would walk around gazing intensely at everything whilst paying special attention to colour. To this day, my artwork is based mostly on my dreams which I never forget. Many times, I have been compelled to wake up at three O’clock in the morning and begin to create what I have just dreamt about. Therefore, all my paintings and drawings are original compositions without the use of models, photographs, objects or backgrounds.

Living and working on the Peninsula gives me time to dabble in many things creative, painting, mosaic, assemblage or sculpture. The chance of writing plays, stories for children and adults gives me great sense of purpose. Not a lot of time for sleep. I do hope everyone enjoys my paintings as much as I enjoy painting them. There is always something different around the corner.

I do drawings and paintings as a hobby, but I would like to sell some artwork to free up space at home and concentrate on doing more work. This is an opportunity to showcase skills I have developed. With no specific theme or concept, except I like flowers and animals, so I suppose I mostly take inspiration from nature. I see my style to be that of expressionism. If I can make an impression within the community that would be awesome, and would encourage me to do further works.

The way of the

Gnostic

H

uman life on this planet is quite funny. Most of us when born have no memory of anything before that event. Then we are taught all sorts of things and programmed with belief systems, many of them without any substance or base in truth. We flounder through life trying to make sense of the nonsensical or just go along with it all without asking questions. And when we ask questions there’s a whole array of answers, which can be just as confusing or just as nonsensical as the situation itself. The trick is to get to ask the right questions which can take years or even lifetimes to master. Then we can start to get actual answers. The next trick to master is to have the willingness to hear those answers, for the mind will not like them for the very good reason that the mind thinks that it is “it”, that it’s in charge, and that the answers will be the end of it and all it’s delusions. But there is much help available, books and teachings from wise ones who have walked

the path before, as well as many wonderful beings of spirit willing to help. And of course there’s the inner knowing, the inner wisdom that has always been there, to be re-discovered or fallen into. The two best tools are meditation and willingness to face the self. Meditation takes practice. It is the way to the peace within and ultimately oneness with God. There are many types, find one which will suit you. Facing the self, will require brutal honesty to get to see your true human self with all it’s quirks and delusions. The destination is self-realisation, great peace, joy and eventually oneness with God. So remember to have fun and lots of joy on the journey. Michell Newton has been working with spirit for around 20 years and is running an informal group on Saturdays from 1 to 2.30pm – See page 4. For further info: www.onenessofspirit.com

BOUNDARIES Can you say no? Is pleasing others more important than your own well being?

W

hat’s the purpose of traffic rules, like red lights, stop signs and lines down the middle of the road? Without boundaries someone or everyone would take advantage of the roads. Even with rules they still must be enforced! If you haven’t made any personal rules (boundaries), there are always people who are ready to take advantage. Our parents, children, our friends; mostly unconsciously, will push as far as they can to get what they want because humans are basically selfish. What does the expression ‘pushover’ tell you about someone? Do you know when your personal boundaries are being violated? How can you tell when someone has poorly defined boundaries? If you are experiencing any of the following indicators, you have poorly defined boundaries. Are you feeling like you always have to be talking and revealing all your personal information to acquaintances? Are you inappropriately revealing personal data to any one? Saying yes to everyone’s requests? Expecting others to take care of you and not taking personal responsibility for your own life? (“you do it for me” attitude). Have you found yourself taking from others and not knowing when to stop? (“give me, give me, attitudes”) Are you falling apart so others will take care of you, letting yourself be consumed by another person? Letting another control your life. Letting others dictate your choices. Falling in love with someone who is nice to you. Pleasing others even when your beliefs and principles are being violated. Trying to be only what others want you to be. Letting people touch you after you said no, or touching others when they have said no. Not expressing what you feel about touch. Giving away what you need for yourself, or something you truly value for your own G

wellbeing. Or just taking advantage of others by violating their boundaries (“what can I get away with?”) Are you abusing your body with too much food, sex, alcohol, drugs, or exercise, being recklessly impulsive? Spending every waking and sleeping moment working! If any of these are applicable to you and your actions, STOP!! Reassess your situation. Practice saying NO! to those who violate, or to yourself to stop your violating. Boundaries give us personal protection. Physical boundaries give us safety. Emotional and Mental Boundaries give us protection from the users and abusers. Be aware of all the people you know who seem self-assured and do not take advantage of others. Talk to people who are at peace and harmony with themselves. How do they achieve and maintain this peace? How do they guard and protect their personal space? Pay attention and learn to stand in your personal power. Learn to say NO to create and defend your boundaries, and YES to creating happiness, healthiness and wealthiness. YOGA

The emotional anguish of healing a physical injury

I

recently had an unfortunate and very painful experience. I fell over in a local shopping centre in a puddle of water resulting in a rupture of the quadriceps tendon. A very surreal experience. My day started perfectly, Yoga class on the beach followed by a swim in the ocean. The tranquil morning soon changed to one of chaos and agony as I walked into the shopping mall and fell. An hour later I was in hospital. This ill-fated incident occurred two months ago and I’ve been incapacitated since, One leg is locked in a brace and will be for a long while yet. The prognosis is unknown at this stage. The ancient Yogis conceived that the body and mind are connected. Whatever happens in the body will be reflected in the mind and whatever happens in the mind will be reflected in the body. I’m certainly having my own experience of this yogic principle as I work on a possible recovery from this injury. The pain of the physical injury, the pain of surgery, being physically incapacitated and all the stress of trying to keep my business operating is depressing. Let’s face it – a one legged yoga teacher who can barely walk, let alone practice any form of physical yoga isn’t a good marketing tool for a business that promotes functional movement. My very livelihood depends on me being physically able to lead yoga classes, no classes – no income. That’s the dilemma I face, not letting the pain and frustration of this physical injury lead to a negative emotional condition or mental illness.

I’ve conceded that I have to rest and recover but the problem I have is that I feel unproductive and that I’m wasting my days. The body has been forced to become static but the mind has become over active, over thinking and conjuring up every possible negative scenario regarding my future. My physical disability has forced me to delve into the broad encompassing toolbox of yoga to help me cope. Firstly, I’m concentrating on what I can control and not getting caught up in what I can’t do. Various breathing techniques have allowed me to focus and calm my mind. It’s much easier to think rationally from a position of calm. Meditation is normally hard and disciplined work but especially so when the mind is being distracted by physical pain. Clearing head space helps turn off the negative self-talk and gives the potential to concentrate on reality. The healing power of chanting mantra creates healing as the vibration stimulates the more subtle energies of the body. Staying social is a great way to stay positive, maintaining social networks through family and friends is an incredibly powerful healing strategy. Visualisation and a strong belief that nothing is permanent and every situation will change. The physical and mental healing continues. John Wilson, www.peninsulayogacentre.com.au. John is a true local, having been a resident of the Woy Woy Peninsula for 30 years and has offered Yoga classes for over 10 years.

Gliding In Y

esterday I saw Mary laughing as she rode a scooter across from Gnostic Forest and I knew once again how glad I am to be back around the Corner. Last time I grew my Clearing across from her Forest, then ducked around to the library for a few more years. This time I’ve taken the old newsagents on the main road to open a shop called Scooters for Everyone, why walk when you can glide? As you might guess from the title, the shop will sell all kinds of scooters: from tiny kick scooters for toddlers to electric scooters for shoppers, commuters and sore-footed grannies. There will be big-wheeled scooters – fun, fast door-to-door fitness – and small-wheeled stunt scooters with spines that grind. If you have good enough balance to ride an escalator, then Scooters for Everyone will have a scooter for you. Steve Jobs predicted that electric scooters would be ‘as big a deal as the pc’. Scooters are a door-to-door transportation system with a negligible carbon footprint, often quicker than a car by the time you park, and most can be folded and stowed under a seat. Scooters are the answer to ‘the first mile, last mile problem’. Arrive at your destination in a third of the time with a third of the effort compared to walking. One the way back hook a supermarket shopping basket over the handlebars and you have a

G 26

trolley. Allow the same handlebars to carry your shopping home. At first I thought opening Scooters was about me, my journey finding the solution to foot problems that had stopped me walking any distance. About the sheer enjoyment of gliding and how I came back into my community. But lately I read that Steve Jobs quote again and realized this is about a lot more. Now Scooters for Everyone has a manifesto, an aim. The goal is to raise the use of personal mobility devices, such as skateboards, scooters and bikes, up to one in ten journeys on the Peninsula. That would reduce carbon emissions from cars by around ten per cent. To put this goal in context, more than half the journeys in Amsterdam, and parts of China, are made on a bike. In Denmark and Germany the figure is 30 percent. The Peninsula is flat, mostly blessed with good weather, and only around 5km long and wide. It is the perfect location for such an experiment. If enough people want, the Peninsula could be a model of alternate transportation. But you don’t have to want to save the world to go scootering. Maybe the best reason to try for yourself is caught in that moment and Mary, laughing because gliding is fun. Maybe even saving the world is not the reason, maybe it’s the ride. – Liz Macnamara

FOCHTA

An Association of friends Claude Ho spreads his huge photo prints over the counter and sparkling eyes stare out at me. Each face has been captured, though not startled – a skill for the photographer as a voyeur. The consummate eye of this socially mindful photographer has traveled with Medicins Sans Frontiers (MSF) and the Fred Hollows Foundation, volunteering and documenting their charity works in over 22 countries. His images show deep care and respect for the people in them and as he moves each one aside stories about the subjects flow. It was on his last assignment in Malawi in 2000, he tells me, “touched him deeply” and he found stayed in his heart long after the camera was put down. Claude had spent a few weeks touring villages through Thyolo, Malawi for MSF. Here, he observed the work of those dealing with the AIDS pandemic. Malawi being one of the most heavily affected areas in Africa -one report from 2016 cited an estimated 670,000 children to be orphaned due to the AIDS epidemic. While much good was being done to improve medical support for rural communities many of the most vulnerable are left to their own devices. Near non-existent social services meant support for AIDS orphans is often left to the grandmothers (Gogos) who struggle to feed let alone organise education funds for the kids in their care. During this trip that Claude befriended Dr Leopold Buhendwa and Mr Steven Labana and together they hatched FOCHTA -Friends of Claude Ho in Thyolo Association. An association of friends, as named by Dr Leo. By 2003, the group was up and running with the aim to support and empower children out of poverty through education. It acknowledged that to do this they must also nurture the physical, psychological and emotional needs of the kids too. “If you can get to school but you don’t have a light to do your homework at night, or if the roof is leaking, its more difficult” says Claude. “A holistic approach to supporting those within the community has (so far) created 4 community libraries, a vocational training centre, a youth club and the Gogos (grandmothers) Project.

Each year, I learn, more and more of the younger children are reaching school age, ready to learn, and desperate for resources and support.” At 78 years young, Claude exists in two worlds. As a Patron for FOCHTA, there are daily emails back and forth, organising and planning. He returns to Malawi when he can to oversee projects and liaise with the local grassroots committee. This year he is returning to celebrate the 16th anniversary of FOCHTAs inception. Here in Australia he is a father of 2 and doting grandfather of 5. We meet when we can for coffee and he still enjoys the occasional spot of photography (though these days its with his ipad.) Claude gifts me with some home made noodles and, glad to be in his generous association of friends, I plot my revenge. – Emily Holstein If you’d like to contribute to the works of FOCHTA please keep in contact via their website, www.FOCHTA.org.au or facebook page: Friends of Claude Ho in Thyolo Association G

Planetary Influences

for MARCH, APRIL AND MAY 2019

Jennifer has been an Astrologer  for 28 years (FAA Certificate) and is at Gnostic Forest on Fridays.

As the year moves on, the earth continues its orbit around the sun. This natural progression changes our position in relation to the other planets and the following influences occur…

MARCH

APRIL

MAY

Guard against jumping to conclusions. Expand your consciousness in areas where you put together new ideas and concepts, through practical and organised ways. Feeling responsible and disciplined for your actions helps you to feel strong and well in tune with your plans. Take time to observe your surroundings and those around you. Your sympathetic and generous nature may cause someone to take advantage. You also have a vivid and rich imagination. Trust your gut as others may confuse you. Keep your truth and the untruth will be sorted out.

The “Older” generation may be helpful – ask for their advice. Being mentally alert and paying attention to details and being practical will help solve difficult puzzles as you search for the truth. Searching is the key to success in areas of your life that have left question marks previously. Being alert of your surroundings will make it difficult for anyone to scam or take from you. You may be making long range plans on business dealings. Have your facts together before plunging into any BIG dealings, as you may find you’re overdoing things and it could fail.

Individual initiative through opportunities that arise give you a chance to direct any project at hand. Being organised and you are able to overcome any negative effects that present themselves to you. Business issues are excellent for contracts and concluding a deal. This is a mentally and physically busy time, but your thinking is sharp and communication is in tune. Being clever, your inventive faculties stimulates you in areas of mathematics, science, astrology or any forms of the occult. Be aware that hasty thinking may cause you issues you do not need.
