Convento | Convent N.ª Sr.ª do Alcance

GUARD &GUIDE Ermida | Hermitage S. Pedro dos Olivais Capelinha do século XIV no Alto de S. Pedro e antigo lugar de romaria pascal, é também miradouro natural equidistante dos Castelos de Mourão e Monsaraz.

Abandonada no século XIX, reconstruiu-se em 1976, mantendo o portal gótico. Junto está um dos povoados neolíticos identificados na região.

Mourão Mourão

14th century small chapel in Alto de S. Pedro and former place of Easter pilgrimage, it is also a natural viewpoint equidistant from the Castles of Mourão and Monsaraz.

Abandoned in the 19th century, it was rebuilt in 1976, keeping the Gothic portal. Next to it is one of the Neolithic settlements identified in the region.

Nova Aldeia da Luz | New Luz Village O iminente desaparecimento da “velha” Aldeia da Luz pelos trabalhos da Barragem de Alqueva, levou a um projeto de reconstrução completa, que se iniciou em 1995. Refundou-se assim a aldeia em proximidade ao seu anterior lugar, a tempo da inauguração da Barragem em 2002; embora num processo emocionalmente adverso.

Reconstruiram-se, apesar de tudo, obras identitárias como a Igreja de N.ª Sr.ª da Luz, de culto decorrente da aparição da Virgem sobre uma azinheira. Integrou o portal gótico original. Refizeram-se também o cemitério e a praça de touros. O plano, da arquiteta Maria João George (19482006), tentava ainda reproduzir a disposição das desaparecidas ruas. As Festas da

Padroeira acontecem em cada primeiro domingo de setembro, e em junho celebram-se as Festas do Sagrado Coração.

The imminent disappearance of the “old” Aldeia da Luz by the works of the Alqueva Dam, led to a complete reconstruction project, which began in 1995. Thus, the village was reforged in proximity to its previous place, in time for the inauguration of the Dam in 2002; although in an emotionally adverse process. In spite of everything, identity works such as the N.ª Sr.ª da Luz Church, of worship due to the apparition of the Virgin on a holm oak, were reconstructed. It integrated the original Gothic portal. Indicated in the Visitations of 1534, it is rebuilt as a conventual structure for the Order of the Discalced Augustinians in 1670. It passes to the Camillian Order of the Ministers of the Sick in 1717. Extinguished in 1834, only the ruin of the frontage and the schistose slabs remained, meanwhile submerged by the Dam. A Stone Cross stood up ahead, surmounted by the image of N.ª Sr.ª da Piedade and Senhor Morto.

The first reference to Granja do Hospital, which had the status of Commendation of the Knights Hospitaller, is still from the 13th century, marking the parish church, founded in the 14th century, the initial village focus.

The jurisdiction would pass to the

Order of Aviz, and the church would be rebuilt at the turn of the 17th century on the initiative of Archbishop D. Teotónio de Bragança. The classic portal, attributed to Pedro Alvarez Moniz, already includes the Order Cross and the inaugural date: 1629. A grand example of coeval architecture, later renovated in 1760, it has the rare organization of five sections inside, where the St. António Chapel or the Almas Chapel are distributed with panels of sacred painting.

The headboard has the image of S. Brás on the high altar and paintings alluding to N.ª Sr.ª da Conceição. The S. Brás Festivities are celebrated at the beginning of February.

Opened in 2003 and in the Portuguese Museum Network since 2010, it is a contemporary building that applies the traditional use of shale in its structure. Anchored in unevenness in front of the Dam, the Museum hosts a collection of old agricultural equipments; and through a small window, can be seen where was the old village of Luz, whose memory is also evoked. In the space there is also the model of the Roman fortification known as Lousa Castle, equally submerged.

O Godelim, ou Guadalim, é seu afluente e desaguam juntos agora na Barragem de Alqueva, entre países e entre distritos. Carateriza-se a bacia pela biodiversidade, acolhendo-se na vegetação ribeirinha aves como a

águia-calçada, bem como a lontra e lince-ibérico. Nos rios, saltam a achigã, a carpa, o saramugo, a boga do Guadiana ou o buceiro. Estão, porém, em risco estas colónias faunísticas, como a nidificação. A extensão fluvial até à Barragem oferece, por outra parte, condições para a canoagem e navegação à vela. Cada rio tem a sua travessia: a ponte de Alcarrache (em cima), de excelentes panorâmicas, segue para Moura; e a ponte de Godelim liga o norte do concelho à Aldeia da Granja e ao Vale Formoso.

biodiversity, welcoming birds such as the booted eagle, as well as the otter and the Iberian lynx in the riverside vegetation. In the rivers, jump the largemouth bass, the carp, the Spanish minnowcarp, the boga do Guadiana (Pseudochondrost oma willkommii) or the buceiro (endemic small barbel) jump. However, these fauna colonies, such as its nesting, are at risk.

On the other hand, the river extension to the Dam offers conditions for canoeing and sailing.

Associado à mostra das atividades tradicionais da sub-região GranjaAmareleja e da Cooperativa estabelecida em 1952, o Museu da Adega Cooperativa da Granja (em cima) expõe equipamentos que trazem à memória os modos produtivos do azeite: o lagar, a caldeira, a prensa, a tulha, ou os seus recipientes de depósito, bem como do vinho e suas talhas de barro. Já no Museu Etnográfico (à direita), inaugurado em 2013, procura-se resgatar história e memória das vivências da

Associated with the exhibition of traditional activities in the GranjaAmareleja subregion and the Cooperative established in 1952, the Adega Cooperativa da Granja Museum (on the left) displays equipment that brings to mind the olive oil productive ways: the oil press, the boiler, the press, the granary, or its storage containers, as well as the wine and its clay amphoras.

Now in the Ethnographic Museum (below), opened in 2013, the aim is to rescue history and memory of the village's livingness, with the population donating some of their belongings to the collection's constitution.

Of undetermined foundation, this church corresponds to a building from the 16th century, although in ruin since 1755, but of which expressive elements are preserved. Remaining in rural use,

its original chapel volume is recognizable. It had a baptismal area and a sacristy, for which it led a still visible door. On the high altar (in the image), three niches are distributed, with remarkable erudite elements of Mannerism.

Pedro II encarregou o Engenheiro

D. Beatriz de Gusmão, filha ilegítima de Afonso X, e mulher de D. Afonso III de Portugal.

Passou para a Coroa com D. Dinis, o sucessor, que lhe concedeu outro Foral em 1296, iniciando os arranjos da fortificação.

Com o Tratado de Alcanices, em 1297, fixando-se a fronteira, o Castelo de Mourão, bem como outros castelos do Guadiana (Moura e Serpa), fica definitivamente no domínio porD. Diogo Pardo Osório, participante da Restauração, da realização da obra.

Aproveitar-se-ia um espaço entre torres da muralha medieval para o projeto. Inaugurada com pompa em Agosto de 1692, a nova Igreja Matriz de N.ª Sr.ª da Purificação das Candeias, em visão dominante sobre a Vila, preconizou uma inovadora tipologia de igreja. Receberia um retábulo setecentista atribuído ao entalhador Manuel de Mures, que acolheu o altar com a Padroeira.

The foundation of Mourão is associated to the Reconquest and the initiative of the kings of León and Castile, who took over the region with Hospitaller support. The site appears delivered to the same Hospitaller Order of Saint John and with a first Charter, from 1226, issued

by Prior D. Gonçalo Egas (or Gonçalo Viegas), for the settlement. The land would integrate, later in the 13th century, the rights of D. Beatriz de Gusmão, illegitimate daughter of Afonso X, das Candeias has always been mentioned among the set of churches or chapels from medieval times. However, it would be demolished in 1664 when the fortified system of the Restoration was built and its functions ensured by the St.ª Margarida Hermitage, which would also disappear under one of the new bastions. The name of St.ª Margarida remained only on the street that left the fortification. In 1681, the people of Mourão requested diligence for a new temple. Regent at the time, the future D. Pedro II commissioned the engineer D. Diogo Pardo Osório, a participant in the Restoration, to carry out the work.

Talvez associandose a cultos em torno da Natureza, decorre assim a denominação de St.ª Maria do Tojal, presente na invocação da primeira Matriz. Comemorando-se o aparecimento a 2 de fevereiro, Dia das Candeias, o culto recebeu também o nome de N.ª Sr.ª das Candeias. A imagem guardada é do século XVI e, da oferta de objetos votivos de grande riqueza, formou-se o tesouro da sua Irmandade. No dia festivo, a Senhora sai, adornada, em procissão pelas ruas.

The Marian Shrine, from 1718, told that the cult of the patron saint in Mourão was due, as in the neighboring Aldeia da Luz, to an appearance not of the Virgin, but of her image in the middle of the gorse, in the fields.

The origins of Mourão refer to it as having been the ancient place of Vila Velha (old village), whose remains and church with a Roman evocative stone were, however, submerged. It was up to the Castle settlement the structuring of the locality in the

13th-14th centuries, expanding later beyond the barbican as “the outskirt of the Clock Gate”, seen in the Book of Fortresses by Duarte D'Armas.

The Municipal Hall was within the walls, but in the 14th century, it is known that official acts took place in front of the ancient Main Church. At the time of D. João II, the Major-Mayor's functions were handed over to the Furtado de Mendonça family, thus remaining until the Restoration. The modern Municipality was created in 1840, reestablish in 1861, always with the same parishes, to which was added S. Leonardo (meanwhile suppressed). The current Town Hall came, at last, to occupy a building from the 18th century, of D. João V time, reformed in the 19th century, distinguished by the schist finishes.

O moderno concelho criou-se em 1840, restabelecido em 1861, sempre com as mesmas freguesias, a que se adicionava S. Leonardo (entretanto suprimida). Destacando-se, no concelho, o grande centro produtor correspondente à Cooperativa Agrícola GranjaAmareleja, refletese na própria economia a proximidade e associação à freguesia de Amareleja (Concelho de Moura). Atravessando a estrada, chega-se também à Herdade de Vale Formoso, na mesma freguesia, com vinhos igualmente recomendados em Mourão.
