Castle2Castle
Cycling Tour from Rozafa Castle to Drishti Castle Donor: Partners Albania
May 2014 – Dec. 2015
Project ‘Green Sight, Castle2Castle’ goals to create a cycling tour, who starts from Rozafa Castle to Drisht Castle. It can promote eco-tourism throughout cultural natural heritage by generating income for local inhabitants in this undeveloped area. This approach aims to increase local capacities (mainly in rural areas) as for ex: local guides or incitement in domestic investment from the businesses (such as bars, restaurants, accommodations, and services) or the farmers. In addition the project aims even to raise the awareness of the inhabitants and mostly of the domestic tourists related to the value of nature and tangible/intangible culture that Shkoder surrounding areas contain. As Shkoder has a cycling culture movement, creating a full cycling tour package around Shkoder Region provides a model for other areas all around Albania, as: Vlore and Korce. Till now we get exploring different routes not far away than 30-50km from Shkoder. The incomes generated either by social enterprise, or by different funds are serving to realize this tour package and to include it at the European network of cycling routes, in EuroVelo 8 corridor.

In the beginnings there were 7-8 participants, growing up to 18 people, almost all Shkodra’s citizens and a small number of foreigners. The group of participants has been of different ages, but mainly where the young people that become part of these tours, leaving somehow ‘caffeine syndrome’. In total there were about 20 guides organized from June to November, and there were 14 different itineraries, defined and decided as possible for bicycling, including: Drishti, Jubani, Shurdhahu, Shirqi, Shasi, Gajtani, Zogaj etc. The distance of these destinations is about on average of 15-20 km from Shkodra.

Tourist Guide 1: Drisht May
-Visiting the Kir valley and the cultural heritage of this medieval town, -The young people leave the coffees by getting closer to the nature and socialize in between each other; It was organized the first tour guide at Drishti Castle. The participation was relatively good, with a group of 7 young people, under 30, who had not visited Drishti Castle before. This is an indicator that the new generation does not recognize very well these areas and does not have any awareness about the values of cultural and natural heritage, even though this area is only 14 km away from Shkodra. Along the way, many young people and village children joined us. This interaction created a strong social and friendly connection between residents of the area and visitors.
Tourist Guide 2: Shirq June
-Visiting Buna River and the Church of Shirq where the princes of Arberia and Montenegro were crowned; Shirq, Shkoder -Interest, attention and visibility from the local inhabitants; -The young people leave the coffees by getting closer to the nature and socialize in between each other. On Sunday, June 22, 2014, was organized the second tour guide in Shirq, by GO2 and Hostel Casa Mi Casa es tu Casa, supported by ‘Partners Albania’. Shirqi is located only 14km away from the city of Shkodra, on the right of the village Dajç, near the place where the river Drin with Buna joins and is well known for the famous Church of Shirqi. Darragjati and Shirqi villages had almost completely preserved their morphology, preserving the identity and values of the rural area. These values should be emphasized and preserved as an attraction for the foreign visitor. The first stop was near the Church of Shirqi (a monument of culture), located just along the shore of the river Buna. It was left the frontal facade and a stone, which was reinforced with iron. The ancient church dedicated to the saints Sergius and Baku in Shirgj of Buna shore near Shkodra, known as ‘Shna Prende’, represented the most remarkable remains of medieval architecture in Albania. In the middle ages, Shirgji had functioned as a scaffold of Shkodra becoming an important port for Shkodra and a transit center of export and import goods. The second stop was to the village Shirq. Everyone enjoyed the place around, the generosity of the local residents, the children, At Pentar beach (a small sandy pouch at the Shore of Buna River) we made the third stop, making sunbathing and enjoying the wonderful company and nature.
Tourist Guide 3: Juban June
Visiting the Drin Valley and Cave of Juban -Diversity of activities in a guide (cycling, hiking and speleologist); -The young people leave the coffees by getting closer to the nature and socialize in between each other; Juban is a village located 8.8 km from Shkodra, South-East of the city. This village lies on a mountain slope, exactly where the field of Zadrima begins. The walk was quite calm and began with the first sunrays, where we get a great satisfaction. In Juban, a woman was very kind to keep our bicycles safe, for several hours. The village is known not only for soft and hardworking people, colorful folk costumes, its fertile fields, but also for the cave, which is named as the village itself, the Juban Cave. The cave is located about 300 m from the village of Juban and runs up to 250 m deep in the mountain. It is formed by the karsti, creating extras and microforms quite attractive. The entrance to the cave is not neither difficult nor easy and gives you a lot of satisfaction.

Tourist Guide 8: Shiroke-Zogaj August
A group of young people from Italy working at a local volunteer organization were interested in making a guide in the suburban neighborhood of Lake Shkodra, Shiroka-Zogaj. The ride was very pleasant, starting from starting with the first stop at the ‘Bridge of Buna’, an iron alteration built at the end of the XIX century. What impress is its amortization and low security conditions, but the risk is also combined with the pleasure of watching the fisherman fishing with traditional reeds. At the end of the bridge you face the Roma neighborhood, an area that carries their wandering soul, with dynamic music and melody. Immediately after leaving the Roma neighborhood begins the construction of Shiroka Street. With the new urban plan, both these settlements (Shiroka + Zogaj) are included as neighborhoods of Shkodra. The last stop was to Zogaj where we did also sunbath.
Tourist Guide 9: Rrashkullaj-Omaraj August
The next destination was in the northern direction of the city, and arrived just at the foot of the mountains where it is the beginning of the mountains of the Albanian Alps. We passed by the Mesi Bridge, so that Italian visitors could see this valuable monument of culture. After a short break we started from the village of Boks (part of the commune of Postriba) then we passed to Kullaj, above from the north to Rrashkullaj. Passing through the village alleys, where sometimes a car crossed, allowing you to feel free on your bicycle. We noticed animals, old bicycles that were loaded with sacks, crates, or other necessary items of residents in the area. The streets were bordered either with large doors of iron or with green fences. At the door, the woods rolled over, which they had stowed. The fruit of the seasons on the eve of autumn and the vegetables of the villages conveyed the feeling of the village as once. Through the streets we watched ordinary people, their soul, and their behavior. We went through Vraka. We crossed the train tracks, which meant bringing us the old-fashioned transport. Today those SHINA (Railways) are as MEMORY that should be kept with fanaticism. After we did 3-4km on the national highway (ShkodĂŤr-Hani i Hotit) left we headed towards Omaraj, to the Camping near the Lake of Shkodra.

Mobile2020 Conference “Cycling in Central and Eastern European Cities in Ljubljana 15th - 16th October
The conference “Cycling in Central and Eastern European Cities” was held on 15-16 October 2013, in Ljubljana (SI). This event has brought together of 118 participants from 22 countries to exchange experience and reflect on utility cycling development. SHKODRA, CYCLING CITY’ – A BRAND CAMPAIGN FOR SUSTAINABLE URBAN TRAVEL IN ALBANIA & REGION by Entela Shkreli, City of Shkodra (AL) Albanian cities and towns have had a wide culture concerning the soft mobility, as over the totalitarian period private car ownership didn’t exist, so the urban dwellers used to travel on foot, by bicycle, and public transport. After the ‘90s, the car not only as a transport vehicle, but even as a symbol of freedom is losing its urban importance. Despite this, the transport policy remains car oriented. Shkodra as a particular case with a special modal split 29% cycling share, 44% walking and 3% public transport is renowned for its cycling tradition in Albania, and in Southeast and Central Europe. In two decades’ time the level of cyclists has been preserved resisting the growing traffic levels. There is gender equity in cycling; it is wide spread and popular over all ages making Shkodra city a live laboratory for ‘shared space’ with mutual respect between road users. If Shkodra can preserve and promote more this mode of transport, can it serve as a ‘brand’ for all Albanian cities and towns which have lost their cycling culture? Why has Shkodra strongly resisted the trend? An approved cycling strategy for medium/longterm, a national thematic campaign ‘Shkodra, cycling city’, and a comprehensive participatory planning process can contribute to ‘brand’ the city, and making it a good reference for sustainable urban travel in Albania and the Region.
