Godstowe Quiz 1 What are ceramics? 2 What is a counter-tenor? 3 What does a starfish do if it loses an arm? 4 Which country did Burke and Wills explore? 5 Who wrote the book called On the Origin of Species? 6 What does play your cards close to your chest mean? 7 What company’s logo is called the swoosh?
I never thought watching tarmac go down would be such a relief. I am delighted to say that the car park area is complete and looks very smart indeed with the Sports Hall as its backdrop. We are gradually wading through a snagging list but essentially the Sports Hall is almost ready for use. Moreover, the Theatre is already being enjoyed by everyone and in particular Mr Ludwick who is beside himself with excitement. Thank you all for your patience and I hope very much you will enjoy forthcoming events and fixtures in our new outstanding facilities. Please may I draw your attention to the following... Firstly, car parking. The newly created car park adjacent to the Sports Hall and Walker is a staff only car park, which will have a coded barrier preventing unauthorised access. Therefore please do not try to access the school via the Walker entrance. Boarding parents for Walker will have necessary access at the weekends in the normal way. The knock-on effect of having many staff cars parked together is that the area in front of the school should be much more flexible for coming and going. You will notice far fewer cars parked there than previously, and this should be a great help. Secondly, a word about Prep at school. We have made some alterations to the arrangements for Prep and these have already proved very positive. Any day girls remaining at school for Prep in Forms I and II will do this in the Library. Any others, until 5.30pm will be under supervision centrally in the Dining Room. If you arrive to collect, please would you report to Reception and they will call through to the Dining Room and your daughter will be sent to meet you. From 5.30pm onwards Dining Room Prep will only be for the boarders and any others will be in the library. We are trying to encourage independent
work during Prep and I would urge you to adopt a similar approach at home so that the girls become stronger at managing tasks on their own. Clearly we continue to encourage parents to listen to reading where appropriate and monitor the homework diaries.
8 What country’s national symbol is the harp? 9 What is the milky way? 10 Who won the 2013 US Open?
Please could I ask Main School parents to follow this link so as to be sure everyone understands the correct timings for arrival and departure each day. Individual photographs will be taken by Peter Whyte on Thursday (Main School) and Friday (Lodge and Nursery) of next week. We will also have a session first thing on Friday for sibling photographs. Please could you ensure, not that you don’t always, brilliantly smart and clean uniform. From time to time I like to follow through with initiatives and this term the school is focusing on the components of the word PROUD. Following on from the school’s aim to have confident, happy and successful children I have appealed to them all and the staff that we want everyone at Godstowe to be proud of themselves, their friends, families and of Godstowe. Broken down, the word PROUD produces the following qualities: Polite, Responsible, Organised, Useful, Determined. Would you please join us in emphasising the importance and value of these essential qualities, in particular to begin with, Polite. To quote the Tatler School Guide’s most recent write up (October 2013 issue), “Goodness, we do love Godstowe and its polite yet gutsy girls.” Clearly we want this to be maintained to the highest possible standard and reminders always help. I look forward to seeing the Uppers at 1.45pm tomorrow for our bonding afternoon and family barbecue. Have a good weekend. DG

All the Lodge children have settled well into the new term and their new routines. After School Clubs will start on Monday 16th September and allocation of places have been displayed in the Conservatory. Nursery children have started their cooking lessons making cheese straws in an ‘s’ shape and they have made clay snakes.
Friendsnews
All children are encouraged to bring a filled water bottle with them each morning. We hope you like the new nature displays in the Conservatory - children are enjoying putting new things in there which they have found in the Lodge garden. Please see the letter ‘Helping your child to enjoy the natural world’ in the list of Lodge Godstowemails.
