It’s been an excellent and hard-working half of term and I’m sure many of you are looking forward to the break. On Sunday, I will depart for Skern Lodge with the Middles and the weather looks promising - hurray!

I’m sure the Fourths will be busy revising for their exams after half term, as well as getting to grips with their lines for the Fourths Production of the Vackees. This year, EVERYONE is invited to come and watch what will be a spectacular performance, running over three nights. Pupils at school will not be watching the production during the school day so we encourage you to bring them to one of the evening performances.

Tickets can be reserved from 1st June - more information to follow. The recent ISI inspection of boarding was highly successful – Inspectors were hugely impressed with everything they saw. More details to follow in the report. Thank you so much to all the boarding parents who answered the ISI questionnaire. The Inspectors commented that rarely are responses so universally positive as they were from you. Many thanks. I hope you all have a restful Half Term and I look forward to seeing you all at the beginning of June for what will be a very busy second half of term. DG

This week Nursery have been talking about holidays. We packed suitcases, made beach windmills and camped in the tents.
boarders of the week:
Highlands: Marianne Balogun Turner: Lola Canaux Walker: Petch Rojchuphan and Rachel Zhang
On Wednesday, Beginners thoroughly enjoyed their trip to find Winnie the Pooh and his friends. They hunted for mini beasts, explored the woods and made dens for their teddies. They were all very well behaved and had a fantastic day. Kindergarten very much enjoyed their visit to the Oxford Botanic Garden (pictured). Particular plant favourites were those found in the Rainforest and Desert greenhouses, especially the cocoa tree, the insect eating plants and prickly cacti. This week Transition have been discovering different methods to plan their quest stories which they will write up when they return after half term.
Sport Results
Please may we remind those that drop off and collect children that dogs are not allowed on the grounds, even if they are carried. We have had a few visitors recently!
Athletics 16th May: The U13s finished 1st out of 7 senior schools in the athletics competition at St Mary’s. The U12s finished 4th. There were outstanding performances from the girls.

2nd June (4.30pm): U9 & U10 Tennis v Highfield (home)
Once again, thank you for all your generosity in supporting our charity events. It was wonderful to see the sponsorship going up in leaps and bounds for the boarders who will be taking part in the Race for Life, for Cancer Research, at the end of June. If you haven’t offered to sponsor them yet, and would like to do so, please go to the Godstowe School ‘Just Giving’ page. https://www.justgiving.com/mariapascual4
Other useful dates
I think our girls are great to be making such a huge effort in order to raise funds for this very worthwhile cause.
22nd May (4pm): Half Term starts 24-29th May: Skern Lodge trip 1st June (8.25am): Term recommences 1st - 4th June: Common Entrance and IV Form Exams 4th June (6pm): Post CE celebratory dinner & party for Fourths 5th June: Mufti Day
Mrs Buckland You may be glad to know that we have just one Mufti Day left for this school year, and in order to make it as easy (and inexpensive) as possible, we have the theme of ‘Odd Sock Day.’ This will take place on the first Friday after Half Term and we are raising funds for Tujatane School again. Last year we were visited by one of their representatives, a relative of Mrs Sellers, and learned that many of the children only eat when they attend school (as the school provides education AND food), so the weekends are nothing to celebrate. I hope you will be happy to support this cause.

Young Reporter Competition
Field Finals schedule in June
This week the Lowers and Middles were introduced to the “I Love Amazon Schools” Young Reporter Competition. Supported by Sky News presenter Lorna Dunkley, it is a great opportunity for any budding journalists, presenters or news reporters to show off their reporting skills and win some great prizes.
The finals of the field events will take place ahead of Sports Day (in which we run the track events), during June.
Pupils need to write an attention grabbing news report or produce a short video about any topic of their choice linked to the Amazon rainforest. Written entries should be no more than 200 words and video entries should be no longer than two minutes long based on a topic linked to the Amazon. The closing date for entries is Friday 3rd July 2015. Please click here to be taken to the website. The Geography department is actively encouraging the girls to take part and suggests the girls use Half Term to carefully look at the downloads available. Click on the Download Activity button on the right hand side of the page to access further information, ideas and video clips.
Parents are welcome to spectate. There will be two girls from each colour team in each year group competing in the High Jump, Long Jump and Throw (ball or javelin). Please note that these dates are weather permitting and events may be postponed at short notice if wet. Film masterclass for the Fourths
Godstowe wins music prize
This week, Richard Bell DOP, a cinematographer, came to give a film masterclass to 8J and 8K during their English class. This was arranged as a special reward for all their film making efforts on the Lady of Shalot projects they have just completed. Here are some photos below.
In March a number of girls from Godstowe took part in the Wycombe Orpheus music festival. The names of all the contestants that finished either first, second or third were entered into a prize draw. On Saturday 9th May, the draw took place at the Wycombe Orpheus Male Voice Choir concert and Godstowe was picked out of the hat, winning £500. The winning name pulled out of the hat was the Armonico Quartet of Alexandra Day, Amy Oh and Carina and Lexie Shenouda. They finished third in an extremely competitive ensemble class. The money will be put towards music related activity in the school.
Active Kids vouchers please If you have any Sainsburys Active Kids vouchers at home, please bring them into school and post them in the collection boxes in Lodge and Main School. We will be placing our orders soon so the more vouchers we have, the more equipment we can buy for the children at school. Thank you to everyone who has collected vouchers.
Poems of the week Lion in the Snow, by Amelia Weir, inspired by artwork by Carmen Ngo Although the snow flutters, Flounces And frolics, here is warmth in his eyes. Although the world uses, Loses And Abuses, There is hope in his eyes. Although humans are clueless, Careless And heartless, Their is belief in his eyes. Although his home is gone, His family dead And the humans to blame, The lion has no hate in his heart.
Against Nothing Giving Everything Lost, by Anna Tchen, inspired by her own sculpture His wings surrounding me, Darkness engulfs me, A bright ring glows in the dark above me, I don’t move, we are still. Slowly his wings open, We are alone, Surrounded by woods, It is dusk, I am frozen, still. He hovers in front of me, Dark but so warm, A stranger I know, I look up at his face, I am breathless, we are still, My hand reaches forward, I watch it extend, intrigued, like it is new to me, It falters , I let out a hidden breath, I touch the feathers, I feel. For so long the world has been against me, There is nothing, I am nothing, But he is giving, everything. I am lost but not lost. I am found but still hidden. It is dusk, Not dawn. My soul, Reborn.
