PRESIDENT’S CORNER Ma r k

ello to all of you in 2022. We were fortunate to emerge from COVID and start running club events as of last May. Our club maintained a busy schedule throughout the rest of 2021 in spite of the resurgence of a new COVID variant, and at this point there are no new directives from National that we need to curtail any activities or implement more stringent policies. So, we are forging ahead. We have a number of great events coming up including our annual Valentines Dinner, and the Casino Night Charity event (soon to be sold out). We also have great AutoX and DE driving events too. See the list below or also the club calendar to sign up for any event. Rook Younger is planning a driving event that will include a 15 Region, multi day Zone 8 wide tour. You will be able to participate in all of it, or any part of it. It is being planned for 2023. Below are some of the upcoming events for the next month: The Arizona Region is running the following upcoming events: · Jan 29 – AutoX at AMP · Feb 2 – Monthly Meeting – Lucille’s BBQ · Feb 3 – Valentines Date Night (Sold Out) · Feb 5 – Porsches and Pancakes at Rock Springs · Feb 12 – Casino Night Charity Event at Alpios at Troon · Feb 16 - Driving Tour to Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum · Feb 19 – AutoX – AMP · Feb 26 – DE - AMP I hope to see you all at an upcoming event. Drive Safely, Mark

MEET A MEMBER by

Mo e

Sc h a r h o n ,

M em b er s hi p

T

he AZPCA is made up of a wonderful group of members. As Membership Chair, I would like to introduce featured member, Gordon Isaac.

1. When did you join PCA?

I joined PCA in September 2021, after buying my 911.

2. What Porsche(s) do you have? I have a 991.1 Turbo S .

3. Where are you from?

All over. I’ve lived in Arizona for almost 20 years, prior I was in Minneapolis area.

4. Family?

Yup, wife, daughter and 4 little rescue dogs all named after Scottish Islands. I enjoy Scotch and my wife didn’t object.

5. Work background or trade?

I’ve been in the consumer electronics industry for over 25 years and in the last few years moved towards the marketing side but still close to the vendors and resellers. Think highend home automation and home theaters ranging up to 7 figures.

6. Work makes your car special?

Buying the car pre-owned, the things that stood out were the carbon fiber options, especially the steering wheel, the yellow stitching and seatbelts, and you can’t go wrong finding a set of HRE center locks on a dealership car. Having added straight pipes the car sounds great during deceleration, and lowering provides a more aggressive stance.

7. Next upgrade?

I have modified most of my cars but this one I’m done with. I’m tired of the potential issues and while I definitely would love to do more, I’m happy having a car with a warranty and not messing that up.

8. Have you personalized your car?

The day I found it in Tucson I brought it directly to Stratton Motorsports in Phoenix who stayed open late so I could drop it off and get it PPF’d, straight piped, lowered, replace all lights with clears, and replaced the factory rear badges which the previous owner had removed. Stratton does great work, knows how to take care of mistakes when they happen, and provides exceptional service which is hard to come by these days.

9. Favorite memory with a car?

Not sure most of those are shareable, but I put together a high horsepower car group that is made up of mostly higher-end German cars and we do car events and drives almost every Saturday. My favorite memory with a car is whatever the last memory is with this group. Getting out on the open roads and enjoying these incredible machines with other enthusiasts is

C ha i r

food for the soul and never gets old.

10. Why did you buy your Porsche?

I have an 1,100hp Audi RS7 which has been a frustrating build to the point that I knew the only way I’d get rid of it was to buy something I enjoyed more. I was trying to think of a car that was fast stock, fun to drive, you could bring to a C&C without having to park in the back like a Tesla Plaid, and would make a good daily. I drove a 991.1 TTS convertible and liked it but I didn’t want a convertible. One weekend I went for a drive down to Tucson with the Audi club and we stopped at the Audi dealership which was next door to the Porsche dealer. I asked the salesperson if they had a 991.1 TTS and he said they had a 991.2 which he showed me in the shop being certified. I walked back to the showroom and my friends showed me the car I ended up buying which was outside. I didn’t even drive it, probably should have, but I filled out the paperwork over the phone during the Audi drive and came back to pick it up after. Luckily one of my friends had a copilot who was able to drive my car back so I could take the Porsche home. That was a fun drive back to Phoenix! a 911.

11. High school nickname?

None really, but I was probably referred to as “guy with the white truck and loud stereo” more likely than not.

12. Top 3 cars you would own?

Too many to make a top 3, but the ones I will likely own would be a Porsche 992 TTS, GT3, and a Lamborghini Huracan,.

hat do I like most this time of the year? Some of you know that I am a big baseball fan. Doesn’t matter what team because I have my favorite players I root for. I even work a few days a week during spring training at Salt River Fields selling tickets. It’s a fun job and I get to watch some of the games too! This year our baseball season is in jeopardy due to stalled contract negotiations. Here’s hoping things get settled by mid February. In the meantime, we have lots of AZPCA events on the calendar. Be sure to check them out and go to our web calendar for all the latest information and links to register on MotorsportReg. Events fill up quickly, so don’t forget to sign up/register for the events. This month the winner for the Writer’s Monthly Award for Going Places is Rich Andrade for contributing “The EURO-928-2002 Meeting - Part 1.” Rich will receive a $30. credit on MotorsportReg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. I appreciate the articles and pictures that members send me because without them there would be no newsletter. Now here comes my pitch... I’m still looking for someone to be my assistant editor for Going Places. If you have a few hours a month and would like to proof read the issue before it gets finalized or like to work in Adobe Photoshop to enhance photos or work on the newsletter layout in Adobe InDesign, please contact me at: amanente42@gmail.com. I will be at some of the upcoming events and look forward to seeing you in person. Spring is right around the corner!

MEET A MEMBER by

M o e

Sc h a r h o n ,

M emb er s hi p

T

he AZPCA is made up of a wonderful group of members. As Membership Chair, I would like to introduce featured member, Matthew Lew.

1. When did you join PCA? I joined PCA in August-2021.

2. What Porsche(s) do you have? I have a 2009 997.2 Carrera.

3. Where are you from?

I grew up in Tucson and went to college at UCLA. Since graduating in 2004, have worked in Los Angeles, Dallas, and now in Scottsdale – but normally, I’m traveling for work over 150 days per year.

4. Family? Single.

5. Work background or trade?

Partner / Managing Director for Deloitte, which is one of the largest consulting / professional services firms in the world. My background is in finance / accounting and I specialize in turnaround / distressed businesses. So, we get engaged by companies that are having liquidity issues, perhaps have a big debt payment coming due, have structural issues to their business models that are making them unprofitable, etc.

6. What makes your car special?

Honestly, there is nothing ‘special’ about my car. There are special attributes that I wanted in my first Porsche – for example, I wanted something affordable and well-maintained (so that basically ruled out the 993s and the 991s+), but I also wanted something that was analog-enough and still had some of the bells and whistles of cars that I have come from (have had an Audi S4, Audi S5, Mercedes C63 AMG 507 Edition, etc). I was actually going to buy a Tesla, but after looking at the fact that I’m still single, only put about 5K of mileage on a car per year, etc., I felt it was a great time to buy something that could be a ‘daily driver’, and still be on the borderline of impracticality. I wanted to drive a car….I didn’t want a car that would drive me (if that makes sense).

7. Next upgrade?

Would like to get into a second-gen 991 at some point – slightly bigger platform – would want the Carrera S – I like the RWD.

C ha i r

8. Have you personalized your car?

No – Just got it and not sure I will do much – I like it how it is. Only upgrade I will likely do is swapping the PCM3.0 interface for an Apple CarPlay solution, which with the Bose sound system, appears to be about a $2500 upgrade.

9. Favorite memory with a car?

Taking my MB C63 AMG up into the canyons above LA – amazing car – only got about 10 miles per gallon with a naturally-aspirated 6.2L V8, but an engine that we will never see again. The precision that MB used to put into the AMG line rivaled that of what Porsche does with its cars – I think that’s definitely changed now as they have split the AMG line between 43s and 63s – it’s lost the ‘luster’ of what AMG stood for.

10. Why did you buy your Porsche?

I’m a huge watch collector and the more I started reading about the Porsche 911, the more iconic attributes I found in the coveted watches of today, such as the Rolex Submariner. To the layman, the Submariner from 1980 looks like the Submariner made today. I view both the 911 and the Submariner as the epitome of that term “icon” – they’re very well-made, they don’t go through crazy design refreshes every few years, and the changes are always iterative. One great connectivity point is size – the Rolex Submariner has become larger over time, just like the 992 is a bigger platform than the 997. That being said, the changes have been subtle – both Rolex and Porsche have been able to translate classic into modern without sweeping changes. I also love the fact that people drive their Porsches. The fact that you see so many Porsches with over 100,000 miles on them tells you a lot about the experience and the longevity – Porsche drivers don’t keep them tucked away – if you maintain them well, they will last. I also find the premiums and focus that people put on ‘unmodified’ to be quite unique – it tells me that people like the way Porsche did things…

11. High school nickname? ‘Red Bandit’ – [Long story]

12. Top 3 cars you would own? McLaren F1 2016 Porsche 911R 1997 Porsche 993 Turbo S

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES

BY BRUCE HERRINGTON, ORANGE COAST REGION

PORSCHE AT LE MANS 70 YEARS

A

very comprehensive and detailed book, it contains a chapter for each of seven decades of involvement by Porsche in the 24-hour race at Le Mans. The author’s name may be unfamiliar to us Yanks, but on the other side of the pond, he is a noted automotive historian with books on Jaguar as well as Porsche With the clichés out of the way suffice to say that this is a very comprehensive book. It draws heavily on Porsche factory archives for the many photographs included. There are many books written about Porsche, the company and the cars. This book is a must-buy for the enthusiast of Porsche’s international racing exposure at Le Mans during the years 1951-2020. Each of the seven decade-chapters begins with a short introduction to the events of the decade, followed by what are in effect, race reports from each year. These reports do not cover the event overall, focusing only on the Porsches and the Porsche drivers that participated. Over the seven decades a wide variety of Porsche models were entered by factory and privateer teams. Drivers discussed in this book include almost all of the famous names one could think of, except for Juan Manuel Fangio, who never drove for Porsche, and never finished at Le Mans. The year-race reports in PORSCHE AT LE MANS are well illustrated and provide an interesting narrative. Each ends with a tabulation of performance for each of the many Porsches entered in each year. Porsche’s involvement in each race is told by extensive captions to photographs, and by side-bars focusing on a particular aspect of Porsche’s design. This reviewer was surprised by the total number of Porsches listed as entered in each year’s Le Mans – many more than the factory entries that get all the historic publicity.

The story of Porsche’s first entry at Le Mans is particularly interesting because they reluctantly entered only at the insistence of Charles Faroux, the race organizer, and the team was operated by the French importer who co-drove the car with another Frenchman. Another tidbit of interest to this reviewer is how the 1952-6 photos presented make it clear that the 550 was originally a coupe before it became the Spyder so well known today. Introduction to the first chapter gives a very concise summary of the initial foray of Porsche, the engineering/design firm into Porsche, the Sports Car company. Except for the narration introduction to each decade, the story of Porsche’s involvement in each race is told by extensive captions to photographs, and by side-bars focusing on a particular aspect of Porsche’s design or racing organization. Many of the photos presented come from the Porsche corporate archives. Most show cars on track, but there are also a few intimate shots of pit and workshop action. Few will sit down and read this book from cover to cover, but flipping through the pages and studying the evolution of the shape of Porsche race cars is enlightening and reading any year-race report is bound to provide interesting information. The end papers are photographs of pit action, and the back cover shows Jurgen Barth limping to the checker to win the 1977 race, with a very sick, 5 cyl, 936. PORSCHE AT LE MANS 70 YEARS, by Glen Smale, published December, 2021 by Motorbooks, Beverly, MA., is a heavy, coffee-table book, hardbound with 320, 9x11 inch pages, including 750 photos and a very comprehensive index. It should be available for $75.00 from your favorite bookseller or Amazon.com. G O I N G P L A C E S 82.2022

AZPCA AUTOCROSS SERIES STORY BY KENNETH MITCHELL

W

elcome to the new year, 2022. Hopefully, you made a new year’s resolution to do more Club activities for the new year like an autocross event, either as a driver or a “Taste of Autocross”.

As for the “Cone Killer” statistics, Eric T. is in the lead with seven cone kills with William P. right behind Eric with 6 kills, and Marc T. with 5 kills. Each cone kill adds 2 seconds to their lap times.

This article is usually reporting the fun-packed details of the event that just occurred. With that being said, I elected to write about the first half of the exciting and fun-packed 2021/2022 Autocross Season for this Going Places issue. There is no doubt that the second half of the autocross season will be just as exciting, and fun packed, as the first half of the season.

At the mid-season point, there are several drivers that have not hit a cone, so far, not to jinx anyone. In autocross terms, this is called being “Clean” or “Not Dirty”. The list of drivers with clean runs so far this season are Dave M., James E., Justin B., Ken O., Kristopher H., Marc C., Mark S., Martin R., Michael C., Randall T., Robert V., Rodney D., Ryan H., Scott O., and Steve E. At least they are not spending any time in the garage with car wax to remove any evidence of those pesky cones!

There were a lot of AZPCA Region members attending an event for their first-time. There were also several PCA members visiting from other Zone 8 Regions. Several AZPCA Region members have shown a lot of improvement in their driving skills. The more seat time you get you’ll become better drivers, not only on an autocross course, but also on the streets. Although we do not run an official season points program, for fun, let’s look at where we are at the mid-season point and see who has the least amount of time, in seconds, on course, and who and who has not hit those little plastic pointed orange objects, known as “Cones”. First, we will start with combining the times of the first four events for the Group “P” Drivers. Although, there were several drivers that were in the hunt for the best lap time at the events, there were only two drivers that have attended the first four events. Kim K. total time for the first four events is 178.025 seconds and Eric S. total time was 180.353 seconds. The second half of the season will be exciting to watch and see if Eric can best Kim’s total time of the season by the last event in April. There were four AZPCA Region members driving in Group “X”. Yours truly is holding down fastest combined time of 176.662 with Ealing J. on my heels holding the next fastest combined time of 179.551 seconds and Mathias A. is in third position and the final podium position with a combined time of 185.965 seconds. New AZPCA Region member, Brian M., is in fourth position with a combined time of 194.040 seconds.

| 24 |

The next event is Saturday, February 19, 2022. There will be three more events following the February event. The following three events will be on Saturdays, March 19, 2022, and April 9 and 30, 2022. The registration for the April events will be posted to motorsportreg.com shortly. As these events are normally sold-out weeks before the event, it is best to sign up early as possible. You will need to sign-on to your motorsportreg.com account and select either driver or a “Taste of Autocross. If you want to volunteer and help out with the operation of the event, just send an email to the autocross chairs at autocross@az.pca.prg and let them know that you would like to volunteer. The “Taste of Autocross” is for members to come out and be part of the event, without the driving part, to help decide if you want to drive your Porsche Car in an event. As a “Taste of Autocross” entry you will be allowed to ride with an experienced driver(s). Also, you will be allowed to work a course assignment. The entry fee for “Taste of Autocross” is only $15.00. There is no fee for volunteering to help with the event operation and many thanks for doing so. Come on out and meet some really cool AZPCA Region members. Hopefully, we’ll see you at the next event, and don’t forget about Valentine’s Day.

THE EURO-928-2002 MEETING- Part 1 Ludwigsburg, Germany STORY AND PHOTOS BY RICHARD ANDRADE

I

magine a chance to meet the faces behind the design of your favorite Porsche, to be able to ask what was going through their minds and to hear their answers. The Porsche Club 928 Germany opened their Euro-928-2002 twenty-fifth anniversary celebration to all 928 enthusiasts. Anyone who was lucky enough to learn about this event could register and attend. For me, this opportunity was too much to resist. As the recap of this event unfolds, I believe you too will agree that my expectations were fulfilled.

| 26 |

The story of the Porsche’s 928 program began on October 21, 1971, when Dr. Ernst Fuhrmann, Porsche’s Technical Director, was presented with development chief Helmut Bott’s research results and recommendations for their next generation automobile. Porsche was still a small company then and had limited financial resources. Management had a real concern that the 911 could not meet the strict safety and emissions requirements that their largest market, the United States, was imposing on all automobile manufacturers. The 928 was to be their first clean sheet design and a departure from the past configuration of rear air-cooled engines. For their next generation vehicle, a front water-cooled engine and rear transaxle layout was chosen. The Euro-928-2002 event was centered at the Hotel Nestor in Ludwigsburg, Germany, just 15 km north of Stuttgart and a fifteen minute drive from Porsche’s Zuffenhausen manufacturing plant. Rather than solely focus on technical and driving events most commonly held at car enthusiasts meetings, the club decided to add cultural and social activities in light of the importance of the 25th anniversary of the Porsche 928. The event began on the afternoon of Thursday, September 12, 2002... Attendees were greeted by the Porsche Club 928 Germany in the Nestor’s lobby.

Porsche Club 928 Germany Event Team. After registering and checking into our room we had a chance to mingle a bit with a very diverse group of 928 owners before dinner. Friday’s events began with an opportunity for all the attendees to congregate with a welcoming on the Porsche grounds in Weissach followed by a tour of the Maulbronn monastery. For the evening, we then traveled for dinner and wine tasting to Großbottwar, a village of about 8,000 people. Saturday was the big day, featuring a tour of many of Porsche’s Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen facilities; body and restoration shops, factory service and repair center, exclusive auto sales, parts sales, with an excellent lunch in the Porsche canteen. We then had open time to visit to the Porsche Museum and the only Porsche-owned dealership. After a full day at Porsche, the meeting crescendo was the banquet dinner where we were introduced to many of the key managers that created the 928 and heard their stories of its development. Sunday’s plans included a tour of the nearby Ludwigsburg Castle. After a full long-weekend, we then said goodbye to many of our new friends. U.S. Attendees Dan Bise, Rich Andrade, James Komiak, and Fran Mulchy.

Hotel Nestor Arrival

The hotel Nestor’s building is over 120 years old. Completed in 1871, it was originally part of the Ludwigsburg residence castle grounds serving as the bakery for the garrison. It has been fully restored and is listed as a historical preservation site. As the many Euro-928 guests arrived, their 928s began filling the parking spaces. The low growling sound of the V8s could be heard throughout the evening as different groups arrived. Continued on page 28 | 27 |

A very nice Swiss registered early 928.

There were many 928 GTSs in attendance.

Weissach Friday’s daylight itinerary included a stop across the street form Porsche’s Weissach facility and tour of the Maulbronn monastery. We knew early on that the Porsche 928 Club Germany had done a very thorough job with planning and logistics. We were each presented a map with the route highlighted. They even posted discreet signs at each key junction pointing the correct direction to turn. As we wound through the country roads outside of Schwieberdingen on the way to Weissach, a Porsche 996 pulled up behind me. Regardless of my speed, the 996 driver seemed at ease to keep up with the pace. As we pulled into the parking lot, the 996 followed me in and parked next to us. Looking to this mystery auto I saw yellow brake calipers - this 996 had the latest in Porsche’s braking technology - ceramic brakes. Ceramic brakes are an option only offered for 996 turbos and are standard equipment on GT2s and GT3s. This was the first chance for all of the meeting attendees to park their 928s together. To facilitate in our comfort, Porsche organized catering with coffee, tee, juices, light snacks; naturally the napkins and sugar wrappers featured the Porsche crest. We had a great time looking over all of the cars and making introductions.

Only later when he began to address the group did I learn that the 996 driver was Professor Helmut Flegl, Porsche’s 928 project manager from 1975 – 1976. He was a thirty-seven year Porsche employee, only retiring from Porsche this year. Professor Flegl apologized that we couldn’t tour the Weissach facility explaining that a group of 200 people was just too large to accommodate. He explained that in the beginning, Weissach was only a skid track. It has since grown to include special projects, crash tests, wind tunnels, and transmission testing. After answering questions and autographing a few Project 928 books, the group lined up for the next visit, the monastery Maulbronn.

What a sight! 928s as far as the eye could see.

Maulbronn Founded in 1147, the 856 year old former Cistercian Maulbronn Monastery is considered to be one of the most complete and wellpreserved medieval monastery complexes north of the Alps. It is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated world cultural heritage site. We had a guided tour and lunch within the abbey at the restaurant Klosterschmiede (monastery smithy).

Wolfgang Möbius, 928 stylist meets the group at Maulb

Following lunch, we were introduced to Wolfgang Möbius and Harald Wagner. Wolfgang was directly responsible for the 928 exterior design. He also is a recent Porsche retiree. His last design program was the 996 cabriolet. During the 928 program, he worked for Porsche’s chief stylist, Anatole “Tony” Lapine. Wolfgang stated that Tony was the one who interfaced with management and fought the design battles with other groups, such as powertrain engineering. Thankfully for us, the design group most often won the arguments. He also picked up interior design while the responsible manager was ill during the last year of design. Wolfgang shared these interesting facts: -

the 928 design was to be something that no other manufacturer could do. Ground breaking work was done for the front fenders, no one had fabricated aluminum in such a way. It was a “timeless design” but there still had to be continuity with the earlier Porsches. Some examples are: o o

headlamps: Porsches have “eyes” as a prominent feature. Other manufacturers went to concealed headlamps where as the 928 used the best technology of the time with the largest lenses (eight inch). The headlamps recess into the fender to preserve the Porsche look. Narrow hood with wide fenders. This was a carry over design from the 911.

-

the front and rear fenders were purposely beveled to make the car look smaller and different from any direction. Wolfgang’s favorite aspect of the 928 design is the front fender just above the tire, he especially enjoys how reflections are different from any angle.

-

The front and rear designs were unique, they fully comprehended the U.S. 5 mph crash tests yet proved no visible clues of that capability. The original front design was so square for these requirements. The absence of visible bumpers front and rear was a big departure from the norm and a very controversial aspect of the design at that time.

-

Porsche was very engineering focused at that time. As an example, the S4 front and rear design upgrade was only initiated due to the need for new manufacturing tooling. Engineers had more experience with crash effectiveness and plastic tooling so they were able to round out the S4 nose and give the car an even lower appearance. The S4 rear was given the lower lip to create some feel of a bumper.

-

Phone dial wheels. Wolfgang oversaw the design. Originally the wheels were designed with five rectangular spokes. He felt it was too much of a contrast with the rounded body design, so he elected to go with the “phone dial” look which removed the appearance of spokes because the eye focuses on the round holes.

-

Wolfgang was asked about the 928’s tail lights: “Why we can see rear lights in Project 928 sketches that look like those that were used in the newer S4 models?” Mr. Möbius answered, “No manufacturers were able to made such modern lights in the 70s. At that time, every lamp in the rear required its own housing.” That is the reason for the old looking lights used in the older models.

-

the 928 was designed before computer simulations. The first iteration didn’t have the under hood cross brace. It was discovered that bracing was necessary when the front end was lifted without the engine in place.]

Wolfgang currently drives an old 911. He remarked that he is reconsidering after seeing the turnout for this event and all the nice 928s.

THE EURO-928-2002 MEETING Continued from page 31 Harald Wagner was sales manager for Porsche AG at the time of the 928’s introduction. His focus was on the European market. He recalls the 928 as a fine automobile that had a lot of respect.

City of Großbottwar The Großbottwar Bottwartalkellerei (winery) is a cooperative owned by the regional vineyards. We were provided a tour that was followed by wine tasting and dinner. We had a surprise following dinner, we learned that Jörg Austen, a 35 year Porsche employee and manager of the transaxle development would join us.

Jörg Austen.

Cover of Jörg Austen’s next book.

Jörg Austen was more than happy to meet us. We found a quiet conference room away from the group and sat down for a chat. When asked about his history with Porsche, he recalled that after college he sent a resumes to only two firms, and one of them was Porsche. He stated that Porsche is a rare company regarding patents. They always license patents, even to competitors. He is very proud of the patented synchronizer design that he oversaw. It was first was utilized in racing transmissions and then was used for Porsche’s production gear boxes. Our discussions covered: -

A/T equipped cars and thrust bearing failure: if the factory workshop manual preloading adjustment is not followed, thrust bearing failure is possible. He wrote the procedure that was implemented through model year 1984 and did training to dealer mechanics across many countries of the world. 928 manual transmission synchros: he recalls no warranty problems, and knows of no reason why they should go bad unless the clutch isn’t adjusted or used properly. There really isn’t a “Borg Warner” transaxle, yes they sourced the production but the design and patents are Porsche’s. Porsche 928 A/T transaxle sourcing: yes they use Mercedes parts, it wasn’t realistic to produce a separate transmission for such a small manufacturing line. However Porsche worked to tune the design for the 928. Porsche improved the drivetrain year by year, and as the engines gained power there were changes made to handle the additional power.

Jörg drove the 928 at the Nürburgring many times and loved the handling. He felt the automatic transmission was perfect. He feels his most exciting work was with Porsche racing. He participated in four Le Mans 24 hour races. Porsche won contracts to support Matra and Ferrari with transmission work for their race programs, and Jörg managed these projects. Following his retirement, he is now writing technical books about Porsches, the latest being a German language summary of technical specifications titled “Porsche 911. The technical documentation from 1963 to 1998.” Sigmund Walter is the coauthor. Porsche provides Jörg unlimited access to drawings and technical information. His new work that is nearing publication is about the transaxles of 944s and 928s. He hopes that this book will include English language captions.

PART 2 of this article will be in the next issue (March) of Going Places.
