Stoicism taught for peace of mind to never insist or complain about things absolutely out of your control. That certainly applies to the weather.
How many of you know that “Ob-la-Di, Ob-la Da” was the name of a Reggae band in Jamica? It means “life goes on” in Nigerian.
Our club is very fortunate to have a very active and engaged board, willing to tackle the difficult issues. The board and chairs are committed to provide great Driving events and Social events for our growing membership. Most events do exceed capacity. A good reason to regularly check events on the website and sign up.
We know plans change, but please don’t forget to cancel your event registration. Almost every event has people on a waitlist. But to decide that day, without a significant reason not to attend, is not acceptable. At a recent event with 50 people registered, 19 people did not show up. There were 16 people on the waitlist for that event. And the location was not pleased as they planned for 50. It is unlikely that 19 people had something critical arise.
Moving on from the no-show issue, we had terrific attendance for the “Secret European Car Collection” event. I want to thank Don Murray for allowing us to view his remarkable collection. Hopefully, we will have the opportunity again in the future. The club also had record participation at our recent DE, Auto X, and over 95 members attended the monthly member meeting at WeKo-Pa.
My broken record refrain: if you have the time and inclination to contribute by volunteering to help plan Social Events, assist with Driving Tours, and help out at track days, contact the appropriate chairperson.
If you have a suggestion for a driving tour or social event, send me an email. I will pass it along to the appropriate chairperson.
I want to highlight two upcoming APRIL events:
April 1st is the CASINO NIGHT CHARITY, at Alpio’s Troon, sign up ends on March 29th. Mark Baker and Jeanne have organized a great evening of fun and prizes.
Thank you Alpio Barbara for allowing the club to use your event venue at no charge so more funds will go to St. Vincent De Paul.
April 22nd NEW MEMBERS’ DAY is back in the spring at We-Ko-Pa Resort. Remember to check the calendar for upcoming events on our club website at: az.pca.org
If we haven’t met, please come up and say hello to Ang and I at the next event.
MAKE IT A GREAT MONTH.
Oops, it looks like we slipped up last month
On Page 4 under “In Every Issue” it should read; 30...Happy PCA Member’s Anniversaries.
On Page 30 the following people were missed; 23 Years - Tom Hebner
18 Years - Charles & Jan Buth
On Page 32 we had the wrong name under Social Chair, it should read; Abby Ercoline
Apologies to all those affected.

From the EDITOR’s Gregg & Ali Bull
It’shard to believe February has come and gone so quickly, WOW. It seems like only yesterday that Angela sat down beside Ali and I and went over everything that we needed to know about editing the February edition of Going Places.
Fast forward and the activities we as a club got to enjoy and what is upcoming is staggering. The Monthly Meeting at We-Ko-Pa was excellent and the turnout fantastic, thanks Mark & Jeanne. Autocross had a few hugely successful events thanks to Dan, Kim and all the loyal volunteers. We had a lovely Porsches n’ Pancakes breakfast at Rock Springs Café, nice drive back too.
The Secret Car Collection was a huge success, Don was an amazing host and his car collection was simple stunning, I think we could have easily spent a few hours listening to the stories.
The 3 Lakes drive had to be cancelled due to Mother Nature having a little hissy fit. March is shaping up for yet another stellar month full of excellent adventures, We have our monthly meeting at Lucille’s which I hear has some amazing BBQ dishes to savour.
The All Porsche Grand Display in Carefree kicks off on March 5th, well worth visiting. We have been invited to a very interesting watch event at ED Marshall’s featuring Ernst Benz’s, should be fun for all. The East Valley Loop drive is on the 12th and we have an Autocross event on the 25th. Last but not least we’re off to Vegas baby, this should be an absolutely EPIC adventure.
If you like cars, culture and camaraderie then AZPCA is THE place to be!
“Design must be functional and functionality must be translated into visual aesthetics, Without any reliance on gimmicks that have to be explained”…Ferdinand Porsche.

Meet this month’s featured member, Rich Ferrero.
1. When did you join PCA?
I joined PCA in November 2022.
2. What Porsche(s) do you have?
I have a 1976 911S Targa in Ice Green Metallic.
3. Where are you from?
I have lived in the Phoenix Metro area since 1988. I am originally from New York.
4. Family?
My immediate family still resides in New York. In AZ it is only my wife and I with her Mom and step family living nearby.
5. Work background or trade?
Land Development Design, Planning & Landscape Architect.
6. What makes your car special?
It is essentially a single owner vehicle. My uncle bought the car new in 1976 (I was 6 years old). It has been a running joke in my family that he would ultimately leave it behind for me or my sister. Luckily, he has decided to do so while he’s still with us, so he can enjoy watching it live a second life. It is all original with just over 25,000 miles. I plan on doubling that, so it can be the car it was always supposed to be. When I started it up the other day, I was transported back in time, as I recalled the sweet sound of that air-cooled, flat 6.
7. Next upgrade?
Cosidering the PCCM Head unit.
8. Have you personalized your car?
I plan on keeping as much of the car period correct. That said, some items may get a little updating or modernization (i.e.item 7 above). Most of the car will become my own through good old fashioned TLC and driving experiences.
9. Favorite memory with a car?
Listening to my uncle pull up in it during a family visit. I could tell “he brought the Porsche!!” from the sound alone. Didn’t even have to see it through the window.
10. Why did you buy your Porsche? See item 6 above. A rite of passage in some ways.
11. High school nickname?
My high school mascot: Bears. Nickname in my adolescent years was “Slip”.
12. Top 3 cars you would own?
The ‘76 Targa I now own and maybe a new GT3 for the pure fun of it. 3rd would most likely be a Ferrari: any one would do!

ALL PORSCHE GRAND DISPLAY AT CAREFREE TOWN CENTER
Sunday, March 5, 2023
7:00 am (Display)
9:00 am (Show Opens) - 2:30 pm
Come out with your friends and enjoy a day of displaying your Porsche, seeing other great Porsches, and visiting with friends. While awards will be given, no cars will need to be opened or the owner with the car. We will use the French style of judging, which is simply best preparation, presentation, and POP—an outstanding car.
Cars will start loading into the display field on Ho Hum and Easy Streets at 7:00 AM with show open to all at 9:00 AM.
Coffee and pastries will be available to start and water and soft drinks all day for those showing their cars. Awards will be at 2:00 PM at the Sanderson Pavilion Stage and the show will conclude at 2:30 PM.
We expect the public will attend and we will have “Suggested Donation” clear big jars at all entrances with a sign that the proceeds will go to the Mesa Community College Automotive Program for scholarships. If you are not able to do that please do not display your car. Proceeds after expenses will also benefit the Mesa Community College Automotive Program.
Several restaurants will be available for breakfast and lunch during the show. We ask you to leave your car there for the entire show until 2:30 PM.
Cost is $25 to display your car when you register on Motorsports.reg. You do not have to be a member to display your car. When you arrive, we ask you to go to the registration table to check in and receive your display placard, which you will fill out with information about your displayed car.
We look forward to seeing you for a fun day in March.

*EAST VALLEY LOOP TOUR
SUNDAY, MARCH 12, 2023
8:00 AM - 2:00 PM
There are many great roads to explore North and South of Highway 60 in the East Valley and Sunday morning is a great time of day for a drive!
Our tour will start in East Mesa. We will proceed East on Hwy. 60 to AZ 177 South, heading south past the Asarco Ray Mine. Unfortunately, access to tour the mine overlook has been closed since Covid-19.
We will continue South and East to a short stop in Winkleman. This year we will drive North on AZ 77 towards Hwy. 60 S to Globe. * Our original planned drive was to take us to Superior for lunch but, there is a weekend “Apache Leap Mining Festival and Carnival” going on that would make it difficult fo r our large group to find parking an d the restaurant to accommodate us. Instead, our drive will end in Globe and we will provide you with a list of restaurants available in Globe for lunch. Sorry for the change in plans.

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES
BY BRUCE HERRINGTON, ORANGE COAST REGION
THE NEXTGEN GUIDE TO CAR COLLECTING How to Buy, Sell, Live with and Love a Collectible Car
, by Robert C. Yeager, with introduction by McKeel Hagerty, published October 11, 2022 by Motorbooks, Beverly, MA.
This book provides a very comprehensive guide to collecting cars. It starts with an analysis of the reasons various people collect various cars. And it is thoroughly modern, tending to focus on cars from the ‘70s and newer. Note that the “NEXTGEN” in the title refers to the intended audience - GenZ and Millennialswho “by and large are not rich; they want classic cars they can love, live with, and occasionally even drive to the grocery store....” The coverage is actually much broader with pictures and discussions of classic multimillion dollar collector cars, and most of the caveats apply to considering, acquiring and maintaining any collector car. Only the specific suggestions and examples that get detail treatment are vehicles ‘appropriate’ to the ‘nextgen’ age group.
Three of the 12 chapters in The NEXTGEN Guide To Car Collecting specifically focus on American, European and Japanese cars for ‘Nextgen’ era collectors. The other nine, with titles such as Automotive Origins, Investing and How to Love (and Live With) Your Classic Car, are of interest to the present or potential owner of a collector car of any vintage or price range. Overall, a very comprehensive treatment of the subject of collecting cars is provided with perhaps as much focus on the why as on the how-to.
Famous car models (DBR1, Testa,Rosa, 250GT, D Type, 300SLR, etc.) and the events in which they ran, are treated extensively. Historic trends in car prices are presented in detail, and there is an extensive chapter on women in motorsport, beginning with the classic story of Bertha Benz and her historic, illicit drive in the first practical automobile and including multiple stories of little known women who have had significant impact on motorsport’s history.
Despite this coverage of history and women in motorsport, the book is focused on the cars that are of most interest to GenZ and Millennials who are starting to get interested in collecting cars These are age groups whose interests are not familiar to this reviewer, so he will defer to the author for appropriate vehicles., He recommends as ‘rising stars and hidden gems’, such vehicles as Z28s, Toronados, Miatas, Opel GT, BMW M series, Audi Quatro, Honda 2000, Datsun 240-260s, and Toyota Supras. However, the index also shows 36 references to Porsches of various models!
The NEXTGEN Guide To Car Collecting is Very readable, full of stories of people and their cars, possibly more interesting stories of car collectors than about car collecting. Overall, an interesting read for a member of any generation, even if you are not currently considering the acquisition of a ‘collector’ car. It is soft bound, with 192, 7-1/2 x 9 inch heavyweight pages. It is very well illustrated with both B&W and color pictures inserted into the text. It should be available for $29.99 from your favorite bookseller, or from quartoknows.com.

Why a Duck?
STORY BY DANIELLE BADLER
Why a Duck?
You go down to the viaduct.
Why a duck?
… Why not a chicken?
Let’sall do one big rim shot for the healing powers of comedy. Because humor can overcome just about anything. The Marx Brothers were masters. And they were in their prime during the peak of the Great Depression, when we really needed it. But we can argue that the need is just as great today. So … let’s all take a second to look around, for the nuggets that smile on us, and make us smile back.
It’s what I’ve been doing. I’ve been collecting tidbits, new and old, some which were intended to be funny, some which weren’t. But they all should do the trick. Follow me, and let’s all lighten up, at least for a few minutes, and enjoy the ride.
Car and Driver Magazine used to publish an annual “10 Best” issue that went beyond the best vehicles. They also covered things like the best car stories of the year. I remember one in particular.
It’s the story of these guys, who were driving around one night, street racing and chewing gum. Each time the driver opened another stick of gum, he’d roll the tin foil into a neat little cylinder. And, as the evening went on, the foil grew to a nice, ripe size.
Then, after one big burnout, a cop pulled them over. The policeman walked up to the driver’s window, looked in and asked the driver, “Who do you think you are?”
And the driver, holding the wad of tin foil, said, “Perhaps this silver bullet will explain me.”
In a similar vein, I just saw an interview with Lewis Hamilton – from the “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction” series hosted by David Letterman. Dave was asking Lewis about his street-driving habits, and Lewis was very self-deprecating. He said he drives very carefully, because there are a lot of crazy people out there.
But that’s not the joke. Then Dave asked him if he’d ever been pulled over. And Lewis said yes, once, in London. According to Lewis, the constable looked into the car and asked, “who do you think you are, Lewi….” And he stopped cold. True story, according to Hamilton.
Oh, and Dave asked him if he got off, and he said yes.
What do we make of the state of Wyoming, where legislators recently put forward a bill to ban electric vehicles, EVs, by the year 2035? Ban them. Reportedly, the rationale is that they threaten the oil and gas industries in the state. Is this a joke? I don’t know, but ya gotta laugh.
And how about the CEO of Citroen who, in January, was quoted in Auto Express that the
36
growth of the SUV market, worldwide, “will soon be a relic of the past.”
Really? Oh yes, said the CEO of Citroen. Despite the fact that the SUV craze has now jumped across the Atlantic and is invading Europe. According to the article, “the segment accounted for 50 percent of all new vehicle registrations on the Continent over the past few years.”
The CEO of Citroen reportedly went on to explain. He “pointed to the new-ish phenomenon of sedans that are ‘called SUVs just because they’re a bit higher.’” And he went on, “’On a battery EV, if your aerodynamics are wrong, the penalty in terms of range is massive. You can lose 50 kilometers (of range) between good and bad aero, and between an SUV and a sedan, you’re talking 60/70/80 kilometers, very easy.’” And that will shame people to drive smaller vehicles, he said. He has a point, I think.
Then there’s Max Verstappen, the two-time Formula 1 World Champion. Did you see where he competed in a virtual Le Mans race, on-line, and he was disconnected, mid-race? While he was in the lead? Max then declared “game over,” in no uncertain terms. Apparently, rejoining would have resulted in his team being a couple laps down. He called the whole episode a “clown show.”
Max, some advice, if I may. Upgrade to high-speed connectivity. Make your way down to the viaduct. And chew some gum along the way. Smile. You’ll feel better. And so will we.

Season EVENT #5
Happy St. Patrick’s Day
AUTOCROSS 2022-2023
SEASON EVENT #5
The fifth autocross event of the 2022-2023 AZPCA Region Autocross Season was held at Arizona Motorsports Park (AMP) in Litchfield Park, on Saturday, February 4, 2023. The weather was nearly perfect all day except for the early cool crisp morning hours. AZPCA Region must have been blessed to have mid-upper 70s degree weather for this event.
Despite the little fuzzy furry woolly rodent with a lot of extra poundage from back East predicting six more weeks of winter, the AZPCA Region enjoyed great weather. The only reason that this writer can think of why we were weather blessed, must have been for the upcoming Super Bowl Football event because the little furry guy is from Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia Eagles must be his home team and he wanted his team to enjoy good weather while visiting AZPCA Region Land.
Forty-three drivers enjoyed another course designed by the AZPCA Region Autocross Course Design Team that consisted of the Autocross Co-Chair Kim K. and the Assistant Chief Course Designer William P. The course featured a clockwise direction with a series of slaloms and gates that included three right-hand sweepers, one left-hand sweeper, and two right-hand turns inner-mixed amongst the series of slaloms and gates.
The right-hand turn that preceded the start-finish was technical whereas, you must make your turn-in late and give up your speed upon entry, so you did not exit too wide and be forced to drive around the next slalom element. Speed Maintenance was your friend with this corner.
The forty-three drivers were given three individually timed consecutive laps each in both the morning and afternoon sessions. The drivers and the “Taste of Autocrossers” were also treated to a BBQ Pulled Pork Lunch provided by AZPCA Region.
Two new AZPCA Region members joined in on the fun. Logan K. became an AZPCA Region last December and he drives a 2015 Porsche 911 Turbo. This event was Logan’s first autocross event but not his first AZPCA Region competitive driving event. Last November, Logan joined us for the AZPCA Region Track Autocross event on Veterans Day.
STORY BY Kenneth Mitchell PHOTOS BY Jennifer Reinhardt
At this event, Logan’s best lap time was 61.743 seconds.
The other new member and first time autocrosser was Zachary G., driving his 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo. Zachary joined our Region in January of this year. Zachary’s best laptime was 58.580 seconds. Zachary was not intimidated by all the orange cylindrical objects on course for his first timed lap. Unfortunately, he was up close and personal and met with one of those objects. Zachary was added to a long list of distinguished Cone Killers on his first try. At least, Zachary got his first cone kill out of the way real quick. As the ol’ saying goes, if you’re not hitting or rubbing cones, your driving line is probably way too wide.
This event had a couple of regular Group “X” AZ PCA Region members driving their P-Cars in Group “P”. Only one of the regular stalwart Group “P” Driver was able to get close to the best time of one of the regular Group “X” drivers. Kim K., in his 2016 Porsche GT3 RS, was the closest with his best laptime of 51.249 for taking third place for the Carrera contingent. Eric S., in his 2006 Porsche 997 “Outlaw”, managed to squeeze out a 52.542 second laptime from his second morning lap run, for this event.
The fastest Group “P” driver was Jonathan B., driving his 2017 Porsche Carrera “S”. Jonathan’s best laptime was 50.219 seconds that he achieved on his second afternoon session lap. Actually, Jonathan best morning session laptime of 50.800 would still have been the money run for him. Jonathan was clean on all his lap runs.
The second-best Group “P” driver was Ealing J., in his 2012 Porsche Carrera2 “S”, and his best laptime was 51.165 seconds that he drove on his first afternoon session lap. Ealing also did not hit any cones.
For the Cayman Boxster Contingent of the Group “P” cars, Martin and Jennifer R. were unable to attend this event so that left Kenny M., Eric T., and Eric K. and Scott K., father and son respectively, shooting it out for the Cayman Boxster Contingent. Kenny M., in his 2015 Porsche Cayman GTS drove his best lap on his second morning session lap with 52.471 seconds. Eric T., in his 2014 Cayman S, drove his best lap on his third lap in the morning session with 54.956 seconds.
Following Eric T. was Eric K., in his 2009 Porsche Cayman “S”, and his best laptime was 55.889 seconds and Scott K., drove a 56.586 second laptime in his dad’s P-Car.
While Jonathan and Ealing were playing in Group “P”, Mathias A. was all by his lonesome in Group “X”only to beat himself. Mathias best laptime was 54.656 seconds which
38
AZ REGION
he drove on his third lap run in the morning session. At this time, it is unknown if Jonathan and Ealing will run in Group “P” or Group “X” in the next event.
The Top “Guy Cone Killer” for this event was Garry J. Garry managed to accumulate 5 Cone Kills all on one lap run. The AZPCA Region Autocross Archives were checked to ascertain if anyone has ever managed to earn the event top cone killer title from a one lap run. The archives reveal that no one has ever accomplish that title “Top Cone Killer”, from a one lap run. This is an AZPCA Region first and very well could go down in history for a Region Record for a very long time. We shall see.
Joel S., Brad K., and Eric T., each had two cone kills and each driver hit their cones on separate lap runs.
Everyone kept the pointed end pointing downstream for this event. As the season winds down, this writer will be dropping hints as to what will be awarded and the name of this award, to the driver(s) this season that were unable to keep the pointed end pointing in the appropriate direction of travel. As of this writing, there are three candidates for this award/ honor and the season is drawing to an end with only two events remaining.
The logistics in hosting events of this magnitude are enormous and sometimes more than most people can manage and endure without burning themselves out before the end of the season. Volunteer help is so imperative and valuable for these events to prosper season after season. Volunteer help is always welcome not only for setup but, for teardown.
If it wasn’t for a core of dedicated people of devoting their precious time in managing the series with registration, developing the Grid Positions/Worker Assignments, coordinating Speedwaiver, working with the Site Manager, ensuring the equipment is maintained, obtaining the food service provider for each event, designing the courses, obtaining the Event Insurance, maintaining the MSR Registration system, conducting the mandatory Driver’s Safety Meeting, answering important event questions, providing driving instruction to new members, ensuring the courses are safely set up, coordinating a group of volunteers that set up and tear down the courses, we appreciate the efforts of AZPCA Region Autocross Co-Chairs, Rick A. and Kim K., for making these events possible for the enjoyment of all AZPCA Region members.
Additionally, the Autocross Chairs would like wholeheartedly to thank the dedicated core volunteers that also help making these events possible and the best of all PCA and these volunteers are William P. (Assistant Course Designer and Course Setup) and the Setup volunteers Kenny M., Dane T and Jim E.
The Autocross Chair would like to thank the members that help out event after event with the teardown. Those members are Jonathan B., Ealing J., Marc C., Eric S.,
Dave M., and Kenny M. If it wasn’t for the help of all the aforementioned members, the AZPCA Region Autocross Program would not be what it is for the members enjoyment and being the best Autocross Program in PCA second to none.
The Autocross Chair also would like to thank all the members that have come out and supported the AZPCA Region Autocross Program. It is the members that make the program successful.
There was a second event in February that occurred on Saturday, February 25, 2023 and the write up for that event will appear in the April Going Places
The March autocross event is scheduled for Saturday, March 18, 2023, at AMP in Litchfield Park, AZ. As of this writing, there are several spots left, do not procrastinate, or you will end up being waitlisted. The deadline to register is Thursday, March 16, 2023, at 6PM (1800 Hours) Arizona Standard Time (AST).
In addition, members are allowed to invite guest(s) to come out and watch you drive your P-Car. You must register your guest(s) with your MSR account. You will need to forward your guest(s) the speedwaiver link for them to complete online prior to the registration deadline.
AZPCA Region members are also eligible to sign up as a volunteer to help with the event. There is no signup fee for being an event volunteer.
AZPCA drivers can also sign up a friend or family member for the “Taste of Autocross” program for a nominal fee of $15.00 and this fee will include a BBQ Lunch provided by the AZ PCA Region. The “Taste of Autocross” will allow them you to get up close to all the action as a passenger.
The Autocross Chairs are available to answer any questions you may have regarding the Autocross Program, rather if it is for being a driver, volunteer, or the “Taste of Autocross” program. They can be contacted by email at autocross@az.pca.org
St. Patrick’s Day is March 17, 2023. Do the Germans celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Deutschland? “O’ Yes, they do.” The Germans have the largest celebration of St. Patrick’s Day with a parade and festivities of the European continent. They turn Munich “Green” by adorning the streets with green decorations and illuminate the Olympic Tower “Green”, and of course having green colored beverages. If you indulge in the “Green” beverages, please drink responsibly, and don’t drive.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day

STORY BY Gregg & Ali Bull
It’s worth the drive to BAGDAD
January’s driving adventure took us on a very entertaining drive to the tiny town of Bagdad. It has to be one of the last surviving Mining company owned towns, stepped in history for sure.
Our adventure started out at Tramoto’s and we had a near record crowd for this drive, we had to separate into 3 groups which equated to a lot of organization and megaphone work on Rooks part to ensure we executed successfully.
The first section of our drive was along the Carefree Highway which is a very scenic run, next up was a quick blast up US-60 W then onto US-93 N to Wickenburg for our first break.
The next section of our drive took us along AZ-89 N towards Yarnell, which spectacular and our first time on this road. This wasa followed by Yava Rd which itself a road full of breathtaking scenery. Not to be outdone, the next portion of our drive that took us along AZ-97 S was an absolute 10 mile masterpiece of twisty undulating tarmac eutopia. The smiles at the “Break Check Area” stop said it all, and then we did it all again in the other direction.
It was a short hop from this great portion of the drive to Bagdad to our lunch destination, and we were greeted to the site of a Country Tavern straight out of the old West, brimming with charm and character. A great place to grab a bite to eat.
The Luncheon put on by the Copper Counrty Bar & Grill was superb and very much what you would expect from one of the few restaurants in the town, hungry miners would not have it any other way. The baked beans, brisket, chicken and salad was delicious! During our lunch we were treated to an improv karaoke by our own AZPCA member Janis B. Thanks Janis!
After lunch everyone was free to either head back on their own or to drive in smaller self-directed groups. We chose the latter and had an absolutely brilliant drive back.
Until the next drive, stay safe and enjoy the ride.

BULL: Every Car has a story to tell
AN AMERICAN HERO AND HIS BELOVED PORSCHE 356
It was early 1965 and Naval Aviator Dennis Moore had just taken delivery of his brand new 1965 Porsche 356SC.
The car was ordered through an exporter in Luxembourg on November 26th, 1964, and shipped to California for delivery. Dennis "Denny" Moore graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1960, completed Naval Flight Training in November of 1961, and became a Naval Aviator. His assignment was Naval Air Station Miramar, where he spent six months with the VF-124 training to become a fleet replacement pilot in the F-8 Crusader.

In the Spring of 1965, approximately three weeks after taking delivery of his 356, Denny was deployed for a tour in North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He placed the 356 into storage on North Island in San Diego and set off on the USS Bon Homme Richard (CV-31) aircraft carrier to serve his tour.
On October 27th, 1965, Denny was flying a mission over Laos for the VF-191 in an F8 Crusader and drifted into North Vietnam, where he was intercepted by a surface-to-air missile and forced to eject from his aircraft. Upon settling on the jungle floor east of Hanoi, he was taken captive by the North Vietnamese Army, where he remained a Prisoner of War in the 4th Allied POW Wing.
The Porsche 356 remained in storage in North Island while Denny's father attempted to locate it in Denny’s absence.
Denny's father finally found the car and traveled to San Diego to retrieve it. He drove the car back to his home in Littleton, Colorado, where it remained until the family relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona, several years later.
Denny stood firm for seven and a half grueling years, enduring solitary confinement, torture tactics, and starvation in an effort from the North Vietnamese to obtain military information and false confessions for propaganda. Through his courage, determination, and devotion to duty, Denny left a lasting impact leading to the eventual abandonment of the harsh North Vietnamese tactics with those they imprisoned. Denny was later awarded a Silver Star for his bravery and honor as a POW.
Denny was finally released through Operation Homecoming on February 12th, 1973, and passed through the Naval Hospital in San Diego before returning to his family in Scottsdale, Arizona. When Denny arrived home, he was shocked (and elated!) to see that his 356 was still retained and cared for by the family during his seven-and-ahalfyear absence.
Following is a newspaper article that pictures Denny, his father, and the 356 only days after his return home. His smile in that photo says it all. He was delighted to be home with his family- and his 356! During his stay in Scottsdale, Denny joined the local chapter of the PCA and even showed his 356 at the Scottsdale PCA Concours in the summer of 1973.

Denny spent the next seven months resting and recovering from his time in Vietnam before returning to NAS Miramar in October 1973 to take refresher flight training. Following completion in November of 1973, he spent the following year in F-4 Phantom Fleet replacement training with VF-121. Denny then redeployed to Vietnam in November of 1974 and participated in operations involving the Fall of Saigon.
In 1974, Denny purchased his lifetime home in La Jolla, California. The 356 resided there for the next 48 years until the end of 2022. Denny remained in the Navy until 1980, reaching the rank of Commander and served as Safety Officer with VF-121 at NAS Miramar, Executive Officer of VF-191 at NAS Miramar, and Commanding Officer of VF-191 during a deployment aboard the USS Coral Sea.
After Denny retired from the Navy, a friend and fellow retired Naval Aviator introduced the opportunity of flying privately. Denny became the personal captain for Prince Khalid bin Abdulaziz and flew many of the Prince's private aircraft in the following years, the last being the Prince's custom-tailored Boeing 767.
Denny purchased an apartment in London that he used as his home away from home while flying for the Prince across the Middle East and Europe. Denny remained captain for the Prince until September 2001. After the events of September 11th, 2001, Denny elected to end his employment with the Prince and returned home to San Diego.
In 2002, Denny began law school at Cal Western and graduated in 2005. He learned from and worked with his sister, an attorney representing inmates on death row. Denny spent significant time with many inmates and found a personal connection with them after what he had experienced during his captivity in Vietnam.
CPR was lucky enough to meet Denny for the first time in 2011. Denny arrived at CPR one morning with his lovely Light Ivory 1965 Porsche 356SC coupe to inquire about a restoration. On initial inspection, Denny's 356 was one of the most excellent original 356s we had ever seen. Original paint, all original metal, a healthy numbers matching drivetrain, and a beautifully preserved original interior. We pleaded with Denny to leave the car in its original form as it truly did not need restoration and was an unbelievable survivor. But Denny wanted the car perfect, and we embarked on the simplest, most straightforward restoration of a 356 that we have performed.
46
Denny flying formation in an F-4 Phantom
We stripped the car to bare metal, revealing the straightest and driest original 356 body we had encountered. It was very nearly perfect. The vehicle required little metalwork and retained its original metal, including its floors. The body was placed in heavy primer and blocked to ensure straightness and factory gaps.
It was then finished in its original color of Light Ivory and reassembled using its restored factory original parts. The engine and gearbox received complete overhauls, and the interior was refinished in German vinyl by Autobahn Interiors in Sorrento Valley. CPR completed the restoration work in 2013, and the car returned to Denny in La Jolla, California.
Throughout the next decade, Denny would periodically visit CPR to have the 356 serviced and tweaked to his liking. He drove the car regularly and got to use and enjoy it to its fullest potential.
This 356SC was very special to Denny. The car represented an emotional pivot point in his life and symbolized joy through all the hardships he faced as a young man. We're sure Denny elected to have us restore what was ultimately one of the more excellent original 356s because he never truly got to enjoy the car when it was brand new, and he wanted to have that experience.
Our last opportunity to see Denny was in the late summer of 2022. The driver's door on his 356 was slightly out of adjustment, and as was standard with Denny, he wanted the car perfect. He dropped the car off in the early morning so we could adjust the door 1/16th of an inch to get it back into the ideal spec that meant so much to him. We trailered the car back to his home in La Jolla, where he could enjoy it for several more months.
Denny, unfortunately, passed away on November 26th, 2022, after a battle with cancer. He was 84 years old.
Denny's family contacted us after his passing to represent the 356SC and see to it that the car finds a home with a custodian that will care for it properly and carry its remarkable history forward. This car will always be Denny's 356 in spirit, and the future owner will be the lucky caretaker who continues to share and tell its extraordinary history.

Stuttgart Market Letter

January’s
Porsche market started off with a bit of a holiday hangover but picked up in the back half of the month with the Arizona auctions turning up the volume and the online auction marketplaces following suit. Overall we saw a 71% sell-through rate (which was about on par with December) producing 357 sales at almost $43 million.
The market that took the biggest hit last month was the 1-2-year-old car market as buyers seem to be less interested in paying over MSRP to drive a car today than waiting for an allocation from their dealer. The GT3 market has cooled off considerably as only one example sold above $300,000 at RM Sotheby’s Arizona sale. I guess that buyer doesn’t read our market reports or just doesn’t care because the new norm is roughly $260,000 for a nearly new GT3, touring or otherwise.
Top sale for the month once again belongs to a Porsche 959 at $1,682,500. Although the 1987 959 Komfort fell about $1m short of last month’s 959 Reimagined by Canepa, it was right in line with the ‘normal’ 959 markets. Carrera GTs seem much softer at first glance with an average sale price of $1,290,000, especially when compared to the $2m average last January. But the real issue here was the quality of the cars on offer. Two examples were repaints and the third was fairly high mileage, at least for a Carrera GT. Surprisingly, the “Star Car” from January, a 1959 718 RSK Spyder, failed to sell over at Mecum early in the month as it surely would have been our top sale for the month. Great car, but probably the wrong venue.
Porsche 356s remained strong with only 3 out of the 15 on offer failing to sell. Speedsters continue to show a bit of appreciation with a beautiful 1956 Pre-A Super Speedster taking top 356 honors at $362,500. Early 911s also remained strong with an average sale price of $168,000 and only one example failing to sell. Low sale for early 911s was a driver-quality non-matching numbers car sporting an older refurbishment that sold for $80,000.
Modern classics remained strong with 964 and 993 Turbos continuing to bring big money with a high of $962,000 for a 1993 911 Turbo S ‘Lightweight’ followed by a 1994 911 Turbo S X85 ‘Flat-Nose’ selling for $830,000. Our “Normal” 964 Turbos sold for an average of about $350,000 while 993 Turbos averaged just shy of $250k and 993 Turbo S’ averaged roughly $550,000. 993 Carrera 4S’ also saw slight appreciation with the average sale being about $25,000 over the moving average of $125,000.
On the water-cooled side of the modern classic market, we saw two 996s sell for over $200,000 with a 2003 GT2 hammering down at $249,996 and a rare 996.2 GT3 RS bringing $210,000. The RS was already in the United States having been brought in under Show & Display laws. 997 GTs and Turbos however reigned supreme with a new record for a 997.2 GT3 RS at auction selling for $406,500. Other notable 997 sales were a Ruf RT12 S bringing $450,000 and a 2011 911 Speedster bringing $368,000.
The collector car market typically uses the January auctions as a barometer as to what to expect for the upcoming season. While we did see some growth in many segments of the Porsche market, the overall dollar volume and the total number of listings have started to slow considerably. Many of the online auction marketplaces that popped up in 2021 didn’t make it through 2022 and I see a few more shutting down here in the first half of 2023 as the market consolidates to the top 2-3 contenders. February starts off with the Retromobile sales in Paris which will give us a good idea of the market in Europe as towards the end of last year pricing took a much greater hit across the pond producing an opportunity for some trans-continental flips. We’ll see what the city of lights has to offer and report back next month.

Porsche Stability Management & Limited Slip Differential
By Scott McIlvain
My personal favorite Porsche technology has to Porsche Stability Management (PSM). This may be due to all the times it has saved me while instructing in the passenger seat while on track. The little PSM switch on the dash has saved countless number of Porsche and their drivers. Personally, I feel that this safety technology is almost as important as air bags. Starting with the first gen 996 Porsche introduced PSM to help keep drivers on the road. Like any car Porsche cars have a limit on what they are capable on the street and on the track. If the driver pushed passed these limits of traction due to a mistake or weather conditions PSM comes in and most times will save the day. PSM looks and many different sensors hundred times a second to see what the car is doing and finding if there is a problem. One of the more important sensors is the wheel speed for each wheel and determining if there is any wheel slippage. As the driver turns the steering wheel the car can see the steering angle. PSM also looks at the throttle position sensor to see what the driver is commanding for throttle. I say commanding because really with throttle pedals that are not connected by a cable to the throttle body the driver is only requesting acceleration, the car actual determines how much to open the throttle body. So if while coming out of a corner with too much acceleration for the given traction PSM will take away throttle to keep the car on the road. PSM can also determine the angle of the car by a yaw sensor. With all of these sensors and more PSM can determine if there is going to be a “problem” before it even happens and correct it. These corrections can be done by the brakes with PSM determining if the car is understeering/oversteering by applying one of the rear brakes to get the car to “pivot” around the brake caliper that is being applied. PSM will cut throttle, turn on traction control (more on this later) and even activate the ABS if needed. All of this keeps the car pointed where the driver wants. It is a great system with improvements with every generation, but it is not 100% full proof. I have spun many times on the track with PSM. So you shouldn’t drive as hard as you can and think that PSM will save you every time. Also for those who like to turn PSM off it will automatically turn back on when the brakes or applied in most PSM systems. Traction control is another safety system that Porsche uses. If the car senses that one of the tires are losing traction and brakes the spinning wheel transferring power to the wheel with more grip. So in my 996 Turbo 2wd with 600WHP the only thing keeping the car on the road while on full boost is the traction control. Unfortunately, my car does not have limited slip differential. A limited slip differential (LSD) have been around for a long time. Many factory Porsches were and are equipped with a LSD from the factory.
