5. Work background or trade? I am a Vice President of Sales for a Microsoft Company in the healthcare field. Tammy is the founder of her own leadership, mentoring and coaching company. 10. High school nickname? Tammy and I both went to the same high school; our mascot was the Wildcats.
11. Top 3 cars you would own? The top three cars I would own are, Air cooled 911 Singer, new Porsche Taycan, and a turbo 911.

AZPCA AUTOCROSS EVENT NO. 1
BY KENNETH
BY KIM KEMPER
The 2022-2023 Autocross Season was scheduled to get underway on Saturday, October 15, 2022, but unfortunately, there was no chance that the weather would have cooperated and be AZPCA Region perfect or even near perfect. With the possibility of local street flooding in the area and a half-inch to an inch of rain, including severe lightning storms, in the forecast, the Autocross CoChairs felt it was best to cancel the event in the interest of safety. The weather would have presented unsafe conditions for both the course workers and the drivers, and the logistics for operating the event would have been very difficult. The chalk lines around each cone would have been erased which would have made it very difficult in properly replacing the cones back in the cone box. It would also be difficult for the drivers to see the course boundaries and no doubt there would have been a gazillion Did Not Finish (DNF)/Off-Course Excursions.
The weather conditions would have made the event very miserable and substantially reduced the fun-factor out of the event. There would not have been any chance for camaraderie amongst the members to discuss the “What ifs” and “Should haves”
because everyone would be hunkering down in their cars to escape from the rain. Workers would be standing in the rain and electronic equipment exposed to risk of failure or malfunction with the rain.
The Autocross Chairs made the right decision to cancel the event and they will be exploring a possible replacement date for this season. Please continue checking the AZPCA Region calendar on the website and any information published in this newsletter.
The course, designed by the newly created AZPCA Region Autocross Course Design Team of the Autocross Co-Chair, Kim K. and AZPCA Region member William P., would have been a fantastic course to drive. The course with a series of slaloms and sweeping turn elements that would have required the drivers to concentrate on the placement of the inside rear tire at the slalom cone and maintain their speed. Hopefully, the Autocross Co-Chairs will plan to use this course design in the near future.
The Region was going to welcome one transferred-in PCA member, and a member who recently purchased a 2022 Porsche Cayman 718. Eric K. transferred-in from the Northeast Region and Eric has been a PCA member since 1995. Eric has been participating in both autocross and driving education events with his 2009 Porsche Cayman S. Eric’s main focus will be autocrossing and teaching his son, who is a Junior in High School, the driving techniques of autocrossing.
This event would have been the maiden voyage for Dave Y’s new 2022 Porsche Cayman at a PCA Autocross. Dave has been an AZPCA Region member for about a year and has autocrossed with the Region in the past in a German Group “X” car.
You will be able to read about Dave and Eric when they are featured in the “Meet A Member” section of the Region’s Going Places Newsletter in the near future.
Last year, the average number of Group “P” drivers was 18 for each event. The event with the greatest number of Group “P” drivers was the month of September with 26 drivers. This event was going to be just above average, and it is predicted that this number will increase as more and more members elect to join in on the fun and the Porsche car becomes more popular with the sports car aficionados.

AZPCA AUTOCROSS EVENT
This month (November), there will be two separate autocross events. On Friday, November 11, 2022, Veterans Day Holiday, AZPCA Region will hold an autocross event on a portion of the AMP Road Race Course. This event will be held with strict adherence to the PCA Autocross Safety Guidelines whereas, the course will be coned to keep the speed within those safety guidelines. As of this writing, the course design layout details and event format are still being finalized. However, the drivers will receive an email prior to the event outlining the event details.
The following day, Saturday, November 12, 2022, will be a regular autocross event held on the AMP skidpad. Each event will require separate registrations. You can sign up just for one event of your choice or both events with your Motorsportreg.com (MSR) account.
Please don’t hesitate to sign up for either or both events. If you wait to sign up just prior to the event, you may end up being placed on the waitlist and missing out on “Two Days Of Awesome” autocrossing, AZPCA Region style. AZPCA Region Autocross events are open to non-PCA members as “Guests”, and they may enter a non-Porsche car. The non-Porsche car will be placed in the Group “X” classification and run with other Group “P” & “X” cars. The guests must register for the events by logging onto their respective motorsportreg.com account and complete the entry along with the PCA Event Release of Liability (Speedwaiver) and the AMP Facility Waivers prior to the event. All guest vehicles will be required to pass the safety and sound tech inspections prior to entering the course.
So, tell your autocross friends that they can come out and play with us. They can bring their own autocross car or co-drive with you. Also, tell your friends that lunch is provided by the region for all drivers and the “Taste of Autocross” entries.
Additionally, if a two-door Porsche is not the practicable Porsche for meeting your current family needs and a four door Porsche such as, the Macan, Cayenne, Panamera, and Taycan, is the family’s Porsche of choice, please don’t feel that these great four door Porsches are not welcome at the AZPCA Region autocross events, they are welcome. In the past, several members have enjoyed driving their multidoor Porsches at the events and had a great time spending the day with other AZPCA Region members enjoying their Porsche cars. So, load up the family and the necessary family accoutrements in your Porsche and head out to the Region’s autocross events and have some fun for a day, no matter the number of doors it has.
We hope to see you at the next event. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Autocross Chairs at autocross@az.pca.org

NO. 1
Regretfully, as a result of a significant increase in my job responsibilities, I need to resign as the editor and transition the duties back to Angela.
It’s crazy how fast things can change!! I’ve never participated in a motorcross event but somehow over the last few days I’ve been feeling like I am dodging these ‘orange cones’ working through all the changes and outstanding decisions that come from these expanded responsibilities.
I am grateful to remain an AZPCA member. In the time that I have spent with Angela and engaging with members through email on newsletter content and articles, it is evident the AZPCA members are strongly committed to making sure Porsche members enjoy the club experience.
AZPCA welcomes three new sponsors this month. They are AZ Euros, Hamra Fine Jewelry and Trackside Motorsports. Kudos to Andy Jorgensen our Sponsorship Chair.
This month’s winner of the Writer’s Award is Kenneth Mitchell for “AZPCA Autocross Event No. 1”. He will receive $30. credit on MotorsportReg, which will be good for one year towards any AZPCA event.
Be sure to check out the club calendar at AZ.PCA.org for many exciting events. The club calendar provides key dates, registration closing dates and cost for upcoming events. Lastly, a sincere thank you to Angela for her patience and understanding.

at Anthem Country Club
What do you do for a memorable Sunday in Arizona in the fall? Enjoy a perfect Porsche Fall day at the Anthem Country Club, of course!!
Fortunately, 120 members of the Arizona PCA answered that by attending the 9th Annual ‘Brunch a’ Little’ Porsche & Pancakes (P&P) signature event at Anthem’s Ironwood Country Club. The weather was picture perfect for the September 25th Event, a tribute to Arizona and the good fortune (and luck) after the event had to be rescheduled for the 5th time due to the pandemic. Sixty-five Porsche’s were on site with several owners bringing multiple cars driven by various family members, quite a show for the Marque. Once again, it proved that it's the people, not just the cars that make the club.
With the event check-in scheduled for 8:30 with the food service beginning at 9:00, being a AZPCA P&P event many participants showed up an hour early with some just before 7:30. At this event the added incentive was arriving early assured that you would be able to position your car around the circle in front of the clubhouse. That said, seems like our club has a
penchant for early arrival at all P&P events, so no surprise and we were ready for them with coffee available.
Additionally, we identified another characteristic of AZPCA members, namely as evidenced by Andy Schermuly, an innate sense of misdirection. Specifically, Andy and several participant cars showed up at Anthem’s Persimmon Country Club instead of the Ironwood Country Club Facility (yes Anthem Country Club has 2 golf courses and correspondingly 2 clubhouses with very different personalities). Upon closer inspection, it turns out to be a guy thing, namely an innate inability to read emails and follow directions. I can attest to this since I’ve been there myself many times in the past, and don't necessarily intend to change in the future. More fun to get lost and divine your way to the right location.
Fortunately, we had several engaged volunteers for the event assist with the checkins, including Mark and Jeanne Baker, David and Cynthia Haag, and of course my wife Maria, who supported the event throughout.
| 18 | PORSCHES AND PANCAKES
Additionally, Richard and Vicki Wyatt and, Jim and Nancy Golba kept an eye on the car positioning around the circle engaging many ad hoc volunteers to further assist on the spot, demonstrating their commitment and dexterity. Also, a big thanks to Richard and Vicki Wyatt, Marla McDermott, Rook Younger, and Angela Manente for their assistance with posting the webpage, Motorsport, registrations and of course publishing this piece in Going Places. We were also pleased to see several long-time members appear who had avoided past events by displaying an abundance of caution due to the pandemic. Good to see Jan and Monyette Nyquist join the party, we’ve missed you.
Finally, a special thanks to our friend Richard Bernal (aka David Bernal due to my dyslexia), the owner of Event Party Photos for volunteering his time and providing individual printed photos for everyone at the event for the 9th consecutive year. Of course, we couldn’t have gotten the group photo without the special wide angle lens given the number of participants. So a grateful thank you Richard for your support and contribution to the event.
This fun event proved once again that it's the people, not just the cars that make the AZ PCA so special. The highlight is always the social interaction between the long-time club members and participants just joining the festivities for the first time.
Our thanks to all of you for your engagement and support in making this annual event so special through your participation, and keeping the event fresh and alive as we approach a decade celebrating together. Maria and I look forward to welcoming everyone back next year for our 10th anniversary hosted Brunch ‘a Little event and another great time for everyone to get together and celebrate life!

**There are a very limited number of spots available**
LOCATION: Westworld on Saturday November 5th
9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
REQUEST: If you sign up, please show up!
Those (and a guest) showing their cars (up to 10 cars max) will receive complimentary VIP tickets for the Molina Fine Jewelers Drivers & Players VIP Lounge Tent at the event (I believe there is a nominal parking charge for entering the event paid to the city in past years for entering the Westworld venue but that’s it). The tickets are valued at a minimum of $195 each for your information but are free to those registered in advance and participating.
AZPCA has shown cars for most of the 8 years prior, with anywhere from 8 to 12 cars participating. This is not a competition, just a major Scottsdale established institution now in its 11th year.
Other Marque’s already committed to the show include Ferrari’s, Lambos, a few McClaren, and likely some Corvettes and other brands, so good to have the Porsche Marque visible. Bottom line, this is a very big event with many other clubs participating. Contact Frank Grimmelmann for info or to participate: fgrimmelmann@mindspring.com

Colours Tour
Day 1 (Our adventure begins)
Having not experienced fall colours for the past few years my wife and I were very much looking forward
Once the traffic lights gave us the go ahead we were off for a spirited drive along the picture perfect AZ-89A.
to this drive. We met up at Tramonto Marketplace and this being a mid-week drive we were surprised how many people turned out.
After all those curves and scenery we had earned a welldeserved lunchbreak, bring on the Grand Canyon Brewery. The lunch was a buffet style meal complete with AZPCA favourites such as braised short ribs and smoked brisket.
Once we were all replete we waddled off to the Riordan Mansion, right smack dap in the centre of the NAU campus. This is a true Arizona gem of a place with a great story attached to it, it has been meticulously maintained and the State Rangers do an amazing job of both guiding you throughout the property as well as telling a wonderful story of its history.
Our drive organizers, Rook and Debbie, had once again mapped out an absolutely EPIC driving adventure. The drive really came to life once we left Hwy. 17 and headed towards Sedona on AZ-179 N, the road was a mixture of curves and roundabouts, Rook said he counted 8…I think he gave up counting after 8 (LOL).
We next ventured onto AZ-89A N, this is where the curves and the scenery made for a breathtaking experience.
We briefly stopped due to construction but it gave the groups a chance to stretch their legs and have a chat.
Once we had finished the tour we headed out to our accommodations at the Little America Hotel, this place was renovated a number of years ago and what an amazing job they did, we would go back in a heartbeat.
A number of us got together for drinks at the Silver Pine Bar & Restaurant, the food was surprisingly good and a few of us actually skipped going out for dinner and instead spent the rest of the evening in the bar area.

FLAGSTAFF, a Veritable Cornucopia of Colours by Gregg and Ali Bull
Day 2
On Friday morning a few of us enjoyed a tasty breakfast before heading off to The Arizona Snowbowl in Flagstaff.
The road up to the Gondola was full of curves and excellent scenery and unfortunately slow moving tourists too.Once we got to the top we were treated to a beautiful sunny day albeit a little breezy one too.
Some of our braver members went up in the Gondola and were treated to expanded views of the beautiful countryside. We are already looking forward to our next AZPCA adventure, Cheers Gregg & Ali

RUMINATIONS ON PERSONALIZATION
STORY BY DANIELLE BADLER
Wherever we are, we’re obligated to identify our vehicles with some form of license plates. It’s the law. That said, however, humans are human, which means many of us can’t leave well enough alone. We seize the opportunity to personalize our plates, with who we are, what we are, where we are, what we do, what we like, who we like, and so forth and so on.
I’ve spotted a few favorites, over the years. A Ferrari F40, sitting on blocks in a dealership, with the plates carrying the message “BY BY COP.” I guess, if you can afford the F40, you can afford the tickets you’ll probably accrue by baiting the gendarmerie in blue.
Then there’s “WLDKRZGI.” And old, old friend of mine has used this on a variety of exotic machinery. He says people would drive up, and you could see them thinking, thinking, thinking, what the … and then they’d get it, laugh, give a thumbs up and drive on.
My personal favorite is, no kidding, “KINAHURA” on a Rolls Corniche, many years ago. You don’t get it? Here’s today’s lesson in Yiddish. It more or less means “knock on wood.” There’s no direct English translation, which is typical of a lot of Yiddish words. But that’s another story.
Oh, I also saw, at a car show recently, “KENWON,” on a latest-model Ford GT.
As for Porsches, I doubt there’s a state in the Union without a “PORSCHA,” or “PORTIA,” or “FLATSIX,” or … let’s just leave it at that.
What I’m always curious about is how car designers integrate these necessities into their products. Because, when you think about it, there’s quite a variety of plate sizes and shapes around the world. And automotive solutions vary as much as variations in the law.
For example, did you know that fully 20 states do not require a front plate? I looked it up – I had no idea it was that many. Of all the states I’ve lived in, five, Pennsylvania was the only one where I was able to disassemble the front bracket on my 911 SC, and install “bumper plugs” on the Boxster S and Carrera I owned during that period.
I think the Italians do it best, at least for their own products, at least in Italy. While the rear plate is always a typical EU-reg black-on-white square or rectangle, the front plate is often a shrunken, rectangular version, which integrates
remarkably well on the knee-high front end of their exotics. Is this an accident? It's Italy. I doubt it.
Maybe someone can explain to me what the deal is with plates on vehicles in the UK. Apparently, they can be privately bought and sold. How do I know? I see full-page spreads of “number plates” for sale in the back pages of British car magazines. In the US of A, you buy your plates from a motor vehicle department of some sort, as God intended, and you can transfer them to your next vehicle, if you so desire. In the UK, apparently, procuring vanity plates is its own cottage industry.
Now, when front plates are the law in virtually every market in the world, except those 20 states, why is it so difficult for some manufacturers to integrate this necessity into the front-end design of their vehicles?
Exhibit A is the latest-edition Lexus. Any modern Lexus. They all now come with a corporate front end that looks like the snow-plow attachment for some Northwest Zephyr railroad engine, ready to blast its way through 20-foot-high drifts on the Donner Pass. The license plate, any license plate, just gets in the way. One simple question, why?
Then you have the opposite situation with the super giant economy size front kidney grills on the latest-model BMWs. I mean, haven’t we been through this before with BMW design? Didn’t we turn our back on the Bangle Butt some 20 years ago? Do you remember? Really clean, organic, integrated design … destroyed by … I’m sorry, I can’t explain it … a simply weird-o design hiccup at the rear.
But Chris Bangle is long gone from BMW design. Is there some gnome-like ex-student of Bangle, who crawled out of a manhole to get his hands on front-end drawings in the middle of the night, and “fixed” them before anyone in management knew what happened?
I don’t know. All I do know is that the look of the latest BMW kidney grill is the only front-end design that seems to actually need a license plate, right in the middle, to break up the awkward mess of the gigundo twin intakes that are, at least to me, completely out of perspective.
But, then again, there’s no accounting for taste, or rules. Just ask the car buyers, the DMVs and the auto manufacturers of the world.

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES
BY BRUCE HERRINGTON, ORANGE COAST REGION
PORSCHE 75TH ANNIVERSARY Expect the Unexpected by Randy Leffingwell
PORSCHE 75th ANNIVERSARY Expect the Unexpected by Randy Leffingwell, published 18October 2022 by Motorbooks.
This book is not an update/extension/expansion of the Leffingwell's series of Porsche anniversary books It is an entirely new book with lots of new material from the Porsche archives. Between these covers, the entire history of Porsche 'sports cars' (Cayenne, Macan and Panamera are included) is summarized, from the Gmünd coupes to the Taycans. There is plenty of interest for everyone: the air-cooled vs water-cooled types, two-seater vs 4-seater, rear-drive vs four-wheel drive, and of course, stick vs various types of automatic from Sportomatic to PDK. Turbo and race versions are discussed separate from their base antecedents, all covered in a fascinating level of detail. The introduction reminds us that Porsche, the engineer, produced a 'Hybrid' vehicle way back in the year 1900; the Foreword by Hurley Haywood gives a personalized summary of Porsche's racing history.
In addition to the cars, many key individuals and their involvement in Porsche's history are discussed. The turnover of CEOs is well covered in the description of the development timelines of the relevant vehicles. Leffingwell's presentation of Porsche's fascinating history from an almost hobby company to a major corporation was substantially assisted by the Porsche Museum and Archive.
There are 30 'bite sized' chapters of roughly eight pages each, tagged by the year-range covered and each given a creative catchy title, helpfully printed for reference at the top of the right hand page. Each chapter is focused on a specific model/ version. Turbocharged 911s have a chapter separate from that of the 911s. The GT1 gets its own chapter (GT2s and 3s are dealt with in the chapter on the base model), but the Boxsters and Caymans are combined into one. The Cayenne gets its own chapter, as does the Panamera, but the 996, 997, 991 and 992 are combined. The text is uses refreshingly large
readable type font, and the semi-gloss paper makes the many pictures bright and crisp. The book coveris more elegant than the dust jacket. Front cover shows an overhead photograph of the front half of a '911' (identification of the exact model is 'an exercise left to the student'); the rear half is shown on the back cover. The end papers show 1992 design sketches of the 964.
PORSCHE 75th ANNIVERSARY is profusely illustrated, each chapter begins with a full page picture of an representative vehicle. Very few of the pictures seem familiar to this reviewer.
Even the pictures of the early years in Gmünd and the Typ 356/1 are different from the ones commonly seen in other books. There is an index so comprehensive that there are two, three-column pages for “Typ – X” entries. There are four entries for Max Hoffman and eight for Roger Penske.
A must have for any Porsche enthusiast and for any close associate of one afflicted with the Porschephile disease. An elegant, coffee table sized book it is well enough written and concisely organized that dedicated Porsche enthusiasts will read this book from cover to cover. It has enough gems of wisdom that those narrowly focused on a specific genre of Porsche will find this book worthwhile even if they only study a few chapters. For those not yet enlightened, it provides a fascinating and readable overview of the entire technical, social and corporate history of a major automobile company and the people that made the decisions that enabled the success. All in all, it is a comprehensive presentation of the story of Porsche automobiles. As the complete story in a single package, this book cannot be beat.
PORSCHE 75th ANNIVERSARY is hard bound and coffee table sized, with 256, 9-1/2 x 12 inch heavyweight pages. The 'arty', photographic cover is almost suitable-for-framing as they say. By the time you read this it should be available for $60.00 from your favorite bookseller, ask for it, or from Quartoknows.com
