For more than thirty years we have been presenting tourists with photographs and texts reflecting the best that Portugal has to offer, showcasing the unique and unmissable characteristics of every region, the culture, gastronomy, nature, shopping and the emblematic hotels where you will find a copy of GOLDENBOOK in your room, thus allowing us to reach you... Over three decades, we have come to publish six annual editions that provide a wealth of information for Portuguese and international tourists. All of this has been possible thanks to the continued support of our clients and partners, some of which have even been with us since the beginning, to whom we extend a special thanks! In this edition we have extended the scope to include the municipality of Mafra that increasingly offers valid and interesting options for the national and international tourist at a cultural level as well as gastronomically and for wave and other sports. We recommend a visit to this region or a longer stay. We want to continue to be a reference in the dissemination of the best this country has to offer to national and international tourists and to pursue this aim much has contributed the fact that we are an open and creative organization that evolves with the times whilst maintaining its identity and creating opportunities for our Clients and Associates. Beginning in print then evolving to online and then to the app for smartphones, so that travellers do not miss any of the unique moments our country has to offer, GOLDENBOOK has spent more than 30 years portraying the main tourist destinations of Portugal, accompanying their history and evolution. And we will continue, confidently looking forward to the future!

The municipality of Cascais is an enchanting tourist destination within rich natural settings. Located at the mouth of the Tagus River facing south and overlooking the vast blue ocean it receives many hours of sunshine. It enjoys a privileged climate, as is sheltered from the harsh North-western Atlantic winds. Fine sandy beaches dot the shore, from Guincho on the east coast and around to the south coast Cascais, Estoril, S. Pedro and all along to the vast Carcavelos beach, whilst inland lush countryside takes you to the slopes of the Sintra hills. A lively atmosphere completes this favourite location. From 20 to 22 June, the world’s elite showjumpers will be at Cascais Municipal Hippodrome. Free entry. “In Suspense” Sommer Pavilion, by Inês Abreu Ribeiro Ephemeral as water, “In Suspense” will be this summer’s attraction at the Jardim Costa Pinto, also known as the Parada, alongside the Sommer House and Museum of the Sea. Winner of an International Ideas Competition for young architects, this work explores the different states of water in the form of a “rain pavilion” and a “fog pavilion that relate to each other”. Loja das Meias

Cascais and Estoril are the main shopping areas of the Estoril coast. Here you can find a wide range of interesting shops including high class shops typical of a cosmopolitan seaside resort, especially Espace Cannelle in Estoril and Loja das Meias, in Cascais. If you want to buy something or just do some window shopping, there are commercial streets filled with shops where you can find just about everything from designer clothes, sunglasses and leather goods to electrical products. Keeping up with modern times the shops are constantly renovating their premises. Colourful shop windows seduce prospective buyers and qualified staff speaks English or French and give a personalised service. Shops are usually open until 7 or 8 at night even on Saturdays. For those interested in design and decoration, the Casa da Guia commercial gallery is the ideal spot, located on the outskirts of Cascais on the Guincho road. Alternatively there are Shopping Centres providing free parking with shops representing a wide range of national and international brands selling designer clothes, shoes, jewellery, household accessories and many other items, as well as large supermarkets selling all kinds of goods. In these centres you can find an area with restaurants and cafés as well as cinema theatres with the latest films being exhibited, usually in the original version with subtitles. All in all the region offers a wide range of shopping possibilities to suit your particular taste or requirement.

Some are small cosy cafés in narrow streets, whilst others afford superb views of the sea and are located along the seafront refurbished with refined decoration and serving gourmet dishes. There are many local specialities mostly made with fresh fish and seafood. Fish is usually grilled on charcoal and “arroz de marisco” is one of the typical dishes to savour the local seafood. To accompany your meals you can fearlessly choose a Portuguese wine, as you will never come across a bad one. There are four types: fresh young vinho verde - white or red, rosé, white and red wines. They are produced in demarcated regions of the country, such as the Douro in the north, the Ribatejo just north of Lisbon, and the Alentejo in the south. To round off your meal try one of the many desserts. Sweets made with almonds, egg yolks and sugar are a treat. Some areas have their own speciality: Sintra produces the ‘queijadas de Sintra’. Cascais offers the ‘nozes’, ‘areias’ and ‘travesseiros’

Surfing, body-board, fishing, scuba diving, waterskiing and sailing are just some of the water-sports you can try in in the clear blue waters of Cascais, Guincho or Carcavelos. The young bravely face riding the crisp waves on their surf-boards whilst others use windpower for sailing and wind or kite-surfing. The Cascais marina receives superb yachts, sailboats and catamarans and has all the necessary back-up services for both residents and visitors. Sailboats dot the horizon on weekends when local enthusiasts get together for races sailing along the mouth of the river. However in the last few years Cascais has become the venue for world-class international sailing regattas. Quinta da Regaleira is one of the most astonishing and unfathomable monuments of Sintra’s Cultural Landscape a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Set on the elegant promenade connecting Sintra’s City Center and Seteais Palace Hotel, the estate was purchased in 1893 by philanthropist António Carvalho Monteiro (18481920) for his family’s summerhouse. Between 1898/1913, in the hands of Italian architect and scenographer Luigi Manini, he converted his dominion into an ambitious Total Art project, submitted to a complex landscape and architectural program that materialized his imaginary garden concept. It is nowadays considered the masterpiece of Neo-Manueline Art from Romanticism period in Sintra. More than a simple tourist stroll, visiting Regaleira is a journey to a universe of symbols and metaphor. Nothing is only what it appears to be but always a clue leading to something more enticing, transcending and mysterious...

A Quinta da Regaleira constitui um dos mais surpreendentes e enigmáticos monumentos da Paisagem Cultural de Sintra. Situada no elegante percurso que liga o Palácio Nacional de Sintra e o Palácio de Seteais, a quinta foi adquirida em 1893 pelo filantropo António Carvalho Monteiro (18481920) para residência de Verão da sua família. In 1931, Carlos Almeida better known as Carlos Russo, opened a small premises where he sold ‘Queijadas’ – a delicious Portuguese cake traditionally made from sugar and freshcheese. In 1965, for health reasons, he passed the business to his son Rodrigo José Inácio de Almeida. Carlos Almeida died in 1972.When Carlos Almeida began manufacturing ‘Queijadas’ he bought a carved wooden figure of a black man from a furniture shop on the ‘Avenida D. Francisco de Almeida’ and he placed it at the door to his premises to bring good fortune. This is how the name “Casa do Preto” (House of the Black Man) came into being. Later it was registered as a trademark. “Preto” queijadas are not just sold at “Casa do Preto” in “Chão de Meninos” but in many places, such as supermarkets, where this type of cake is not usually found. Customers enjoyed the high quality products and the personal service they received. As Joaquim Almeida says, “People loved them and always returned with somebody else”. The reputation of Casa do Preto’s products has grown ‘beyond borders’. A história da marca “Casa do Preto” Carlos Almeida, mais conhecido por Carlos Russo, abriu em Chão de Meninos, em 1931, um pequeno estabelecimento onde vendia queijadas.Em 1965 por motivos de saúde entregou o negócio ao seu filho José Rodrigo Inácio de Almeida. Carlos de Almeida faleceu em 1972. Carlos Almeida quando começou o fabrico das queijadas, comprou numa casa de móveis que existiu na Avenida D. Francisco de Almeida, uma figura de preto em madeira, que ali estava à venda. Por graça colocou-o à porta do estabelecimento. E assim começou a designação de “Casa do Preto”, cuja marca mais tarde, foi registada. As queijadas do Preto são actualmente vendidas não só na casa do Preto em Chão de Meninos, como também em diversos locais onde tradicionalmente este tipo de doce não era vendido como os hipermercados. Aos poucos, os clientes foram assimilando o gosto pelos produtos de qualidade e a certeza de um serviço personalizado. “As pessoas gostavam, voltavam e traziam sempre mais alguém”, refere Joaquim Almeida. A fama dos produtos da Casa do Preto cresceu de tal ordem que ultrapassou fronteiras.

Integrated in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, the Municipality of Mafra is made up of 11 Parishes/Parish Unions, scattered over a territorial area of 291.65 km2. The town of Mafra is famous for its Convent Palace, built by King João V and which served as the inspiration for Memorial of the Convent, the celebrated work by José Saramago, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. There are other things, however, that are worth seeing, doing, learning about and experiencing in the municipality. From the Tapada Nacional de Mafra and all the activities that go on there, to the Heritage Routes and the Lines of Torres, there are gardens, great food and the different markets to be enjoyed.

The Royal Building of Mafra, formed by the palace, which integrates the basilica, a convent, the Siege Garden and a tapada (hunting reserve), is an imposing work from the reign of King João V and the most important symbol of Baroque architecture in Portugal. The complex covers more than 40 000 m2 and has 1200 rooms that create unique spaces and contain instruments that are unique in the world. This is the case of the Library, a collection of knowledge contained in more than 36 000 volumes; the set of bells consisting of two carillons with a total of 98 bells; and the six historic organs that resumed their echoing through the Basilica in 2010. The Siege Garden began as the convent enclosure at the disposal of the friars, but also for the use of the Court. Water mirrors, wide paths, leafy trees and a centenary noria still in operation are some of the attractions of this garden inspired by Versailles. The Tapada de Mafra was created in 1747 as private hunting grounds for the monarch, as well as for agriculture and livestock breeding, in order to serve the needs of the Palace and the Convent. From the late 19th century, the Tapada was the favourite hunting ground for King Carlos I. Today, it is a space dedicated to forest, game, environmental and tourism management uses.

João V e o mais importante símbolo da arquitetura Barroca em Portugal. São mais de 40.000 m2 e 1200 divisões de que fazem parte espaços e instrumentos únicos no mundo. É o caso da Biblioteca, que guarda todo o conhecimento de um acervo com mais de 36 mil volumes; do conjunto sineiro constituído por dois carrilhões com um total de 98 sinos; e dos seis históricos órgãos que voltaram a ecoar pela Basílica em 2010. O Jardim do Cerco começou por ser a cerca conventual à disposição dos frades, mas também para uso da Corte. Espelhos de água, caminhos largos, árvores frondosas e uma nora centenária ainda em funcionamento são alguns dos atrativos deste jardim inspirado em Versalhes. A Tapada de Mafra foi criada em 1747 como espaço de caça privado do monarca, bem como para a agricultura e a criação de gado, de modo a servir as necessidades do Palácio e do Convento. A partir dos finais do século XIX, a Tapada foi palco privilegiado das caçadas do Rei D. Carlos. Hoje, é um espaço vocacionado para a gestão florestal, cinegética, ambiental e turística.

The fishing town of Ericeira was the most important port of the region in the 19th century and the Portuguese Royal Family’s point of departure for exile during the Establishment of the Republic. The Municipality of Mafra has around 11 kilometres of coastline, consisting of 12 beaches, most of them located in the picturesque area of Ericeira. Washed by the sea, the air laden with iodine, the sand thick and light-coloured, almost all the beaches are framed by beautiful rocky cliffs. Here you will find excellent conditions for resting in the sun or having active holidays, enjoying sport fishing or paragliding. But it is the waves that catch the greatest international attention to this coastal strip: in 2011, it was designated as World Surfing Reserve of Ericeira by the Save The Waves Coalition – the first such reserved in Europe and the second in the world – and which has seven world-class surf spots. Along the various beaches of the municipality, you will discover waves suitable for all tastes and technical levels, whether for surfing, bodyboarding, stand up paddle or other wave sports

Ericeira became a World Surfing Reserve in October 2011, being the 2nd Reserve so named around the world, and still today, it is the only one in Europe. The criteria that led to its recognition were the quality and consistency of the waves, the historical and cultural importance of local surfing, the environmental richness and the strong mobilisation of the community. The Surfing Reserve is part of the Municipality of Mafra, extending from Empa beach to São Lourenço beach, seven world-class surf spots being concentrated in a four-kilometre stretch of the coast. Be sure to look up the Guardian of the World Surfing Reserve, placed at the scenic overlook of Ribeira d’Ilhas. In 2016, the Interpretation Centre of the World Surfing Reserve was created, located at the Tourist Office of Ericeira, an innovative and interactive project that counts heavily on technology, providing a truly immersive experience. The Centre explains the seven waves and the surrounding ecosystem, exploring the impact of surfing on the history of Ericeira, a contribution to environmental sustainability, the main motto of the World Surfing Reserves.

Não deixe de conhecer o Guardião da Reserva Mundial de Surf, colocado no miradouro de Ribeira d’Ilhas. Em 2016, foi criado o Centro de Interpretação da Reserva Mundial de Surf, localizado no Posto de Turismo da Ericeira, um projeto inovador e interativo que aposta na tecnologia, proporcionando uma experiência verdadeiramente imersiva. O Centro dá a conhecer as sete ondas e o ecossistema envolvente, explorando o impacto do surf na história da Ericeira, um contributo para a sustentabilidade ambiental, principal mote das Reservas Mundiais de Surf.

Strongly linked to the traditions and geographic characteristics of each locality, the gastronomy of the Municipality of Mafra is rich in regional products. The famous Mafra bread and the fresh and dry cheeses, accompanied by a good wine, produced in one of the municipality’s farms or wineries, are a good way to start the meal. For the main course, be sure to taste one of the delicacies of the region, like game meat: deer, boar, rabbit or partridge; or fresh fish and seafood: such as roasted sardines, skate, goose barnacles, lobster or the famous sea urchin, which is called “caviar from Ericeira”. The Caneja de Infundice is also noteworthy, a unique dish of dogfish savoured in a restricted environment. Finish the meal with fruit of the season: Rocha pear or strawberries seasoned with lime from the region, ending with traditional sweets, the trouxas of Malveira or the ouriço of Ericeira. The options are varied and all of them are tempting.

More and more, Mafra means music! Throughout the year, in various places, there are organised cycles of organ, guitar, jazz, and philharmonic band concerts, and theatrical productions, for example, in concert halls, as well as the Christmas concerts that take place in the different churches of the municipality. Directed to a younger audience, there are the Sumol Summer Fest and the End-of-the-Year celebrations in Ericeira, marked by fireworks and musical entertainment, bringing thousands of people to the town. With an active nightlife, Ericeira is full of bars and taverns, located in the narrow alleys, and the famous disco Ouriço (urchin), located on the seafront, with more than half a century of history, considered one of the oldest discotheques in Portugal. In the summer, peasant dances are held in practically all the localities, as part of popular and religious festivals, as well as the performances promoted by the local government, integrated in the “Mafra Bread Festival” and the “Ericeira Summer Events”.

Cheleiros is a small village from the 12th Century, located between Sintra and Mafra. Full of historical patrimony, this little village was once famous for the quality of the wines produced in its hills, full of sea fossils and the Portuguese LIOZ stone. Once there were 43 wineries in a population of only 800 people, but everything was lost through time. Since 2007 the Manz family has been refurbishing old buildings and ruins, as well as the importance and tradition in wine from the village. Today, the wines produced in Cheleiros by ManzWine are awarded and sold to 24 countries and wine and history lovers come from all over the world to visit and tour. There you can see a Wine/History Museum, the old primary school where the oak barrels now stage the winery’s top wines, as well as the new winery where magic happens. Finish with a guided tasting of the villages best wines accompanied by the famous local homemade bread.

If you have some days available you can go and discover any other part of mainland Portugal as the extensive motorway network provides easy access both to the North or to the South (Algarve) – either approximately three hours travel each way. Lose yourself in the vast area of Central Portugal, which is not yet as well-known as other parts of the country, but where the natural countryside, the cities of Coimbra and Viseu or the coastal areas of Aveiro and Oeste have much to offer. In the Algarve, the sunny and moderate climate complements clean sandy beaches and a beautiful rock coastline. The hilly Hinterland excels in early spring with a stunning spectacle of pink and white of the almond trees in blossom.
