I

n 2017, GOLDENBOOK is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Thirty years of photographs and texts reflecting the best that Portugal has to offer, showcasing the unique and unmissable characteristics of every region, the culture, gastronomy, nature, shopping and the emblematic hotels where you find a copy of GOLDENBOOK in your room...

Starting in print, but evolving also to online and as an app for mobiles, so that travellers do not miss any of the unique moments that our country has to offer, GOLDENBOOK has spent 30 years portraying regions and keeping pace with their history and their development.

Over these three decades, we have come to publish five annual editions that provide a wealth of information for Portuguese and international tourists. All of this has been possible thanks to the continued support of our clients, some of which have even been with us since the beginning!

This year we celebrate this anniversary proudly reaching a new region, with the launch of our sixth annual edition, this GOLDENBOOK CENTRO de PORTUGAL , which offers a diversified portrait of the main areas of this vast destination. Central Portugal is not yet so well known as other parts of the country but it has so much to offer that it really deserves our contribution to its highlighting and promotion. We hope you enjoy it.

GOLDENBOOK is celebrating 30 years of experiences and undertakings, constantly and increasingly focusing on something of growing relevance to everyone – tourism in Portugal. And we will continue, confidently looking forward to an unmissable future!

oimbra is a muse for poets, an inspiration for musicians, a home for students, a setting for novels and historic happenings, a witness to the past and the dynamic centre of a region that is bounded by both sea and uplands.

the ruins of Conímbriga, a few kilometres to the south, are also unique and are definitely worth exploring.

But there is more; the Historic Village of Piódão is nearby, as are the Aldeias de Xisto (Schist Villages), starting with those of the Lousã Uplands, a richly varied landscape where stags bellow in their natural habitat and various species live together in the Parque Biológico (Biological Park). Let inspiration be your guide and explore the Castles and Town Walls of Mondego, from Coimbra to Lousã by way of Miranda do Corvo and Montemor-o-Velho, Penela and Soure; then there is the watchtower in Buarcos and the neighbouring Pombal Castle, each promising an array of fascinating details.

Para descobrir encontre-se também a Aldeia Histórica do Piódão e as Aldeias de Xisto, a começar pelas da serra da Lousã, riqueza paisagística onde bramam veados no seu habitat natural e espécies coexistem no Parque Biológico. E aproveite-se a inspiração para percorrer a Rota dos Castelos e Muralhas do Mondego, do de Coimbra ao da Lousã, passando pelo de Miranda do Corvo e o de Montemor-o-Velho, do de Penela ao de Soure, a atalaia de Buarcos e o vizinho castelo de Pombal, cada um garante pormenores peculiares de atenção merecida.

botanical museums, the Miguel Torga House Museum and various gardens. One of these is Quinta das Lágrimas, where the fountains of Love and Tears perpetuated the legendary love of noblewoman Inês de Castro and Prince Pedro. Be sure to take a look at the programme of the Gil Vicente Academic Theatre, and delight both young and old with a visit to Portugal dos Pequenitos, were the former Portuguese colonies and examples of typical architecture from up and down the country have been recreated in miniature.

With just a little luck, you may come across someone singing a Coimbra fado song in the old town, the city centre or near the university. Or perhaps you will spot a tuna, which is the name given to the black-caped student music groups who liven up the streets with their performances. And if you

happen to be visiting the city in May, you will find yourself in the very midst of the student tradition known as Queima das Fitas (“burning the ribbons”).

Visitors will be amazed at the region’s cultural diversity, not to mention the array of scenic delights such as uplands, parks and protected landscapes. The Mata Nacional do Buçaco (Buçaco National Woods) shelters plants from every corner of the globe. The Açor Uplands are home to some 240 species of butterflies. And then there are the Sicó Uplands, the Cabo Mondego caves, the ocean beaches at Figueira da Foz and Mira and river beaches too. Natural settings where you can enjoy a vast array of activities, from water sports to walks and rambles.

No trip would be complete without sampling the local cuisine and the region’s gastronomy is rich in tasty, aromatic dishes, many of them with an upland influence.

traditional dishes such as chanfana (a type of meat stew), kid, wild boar, suckling pig and bucho recheado (pig’s stomach stuffed with different types of meat). In addition to these, various other dishes are available seasonally, including shad, lamprey, chestnut soup and Man on Horseback mushrooms. Various other culinary hallmarks, available all year round and recognised nationwide and even beyond Portugal’s borders, are such treats as Rabaçal cheese, Tentúgal and Santa Clara pastries, honey from the Lousã Uplands, Licor Beirão liqueur and Bairrada wine.

Sea and uplands, cities and villages, cultural and natural heritage, a wealth of tourist and culinary treasures in a region whose origins are in Coimbra, the fountain of knowledge. Come and explore it!

odfish Portuguese Capital and comprehending the cities of Ílhavo and Gafanha da Nazaré, the Municipality of Ílhavo is double-crossed by channels from Ria de Aveiro Lagoon. It is bounded, at north, by the harbour entrance channel and watched by the tallest Portuguese lighthouse. It also includes a wide green area of National Forest and an extensive coastline with the beaches of Barra and Costa Nova, this later known for its colour striped houses - the “palheiros”.

Seasoned by the salt and the sun, by maritime breeze and by the wild pine scent, the mood of the “Ilhavos” is happy, energetic, daring and creative. The daily working adventure, sometimes

tragic, didn’t erase the sweetness of these women and men, who, by knowing themselves privileged for inhabiting such an unique territory, full of scenic beauty and disputed by the land, the sea and the salted lagoon, on games of lights and tides, throw themselves to work and leisure, with the same energy, enthusiasm and pride for their culture and identity.

The “Ilhavos” were founders of several maritime communities along the Portuguese coastline, through its maritime and fishing vocation, which will have its maximum spot on the first half of the 20th century period, during which they will become famous by the tenaciousness and

courage of their captains and fishermen during the Cod fishing campaigns at the tempested northern seas.

Cradle of the Vista Alegre Porcelain Factory, a symbol for national excellence on the fields of creativity, quality and entrepreneurship, its recently enlarged museum reminds not only the industrial heritage of this factory, but also the path of its working community, living in that which is one of the biggest, oldest and still-working European industrial neighbourhoods, with nearly two centuries.

Each of the communities of this polycentric territory celebrates its culture in gardens, streets and alleys but also in its multiple and

charismatic cultural equipments.

Along with this intangible heritage are the Cardadores”, iconic figures from Vale de Ilhavo’s traditional Carnival, and the gastronomic flavours that, besides the codfish, distinguished annually at the largest national Codfish Festival, and the shellfish, eaten during the Seafood Festival of Costa Nova, both held in August, also include other fish – served grilled or in stews, bread and sweet bread from Vale de Ílhavo, sweet rice or tripas from Costa Nova.

Maritime Museum of Ílhavo Celebrating, in 2017, its 80th anniversary, the Maritime Museum of Ílhavo embodies the Ilhavos cultural identity, which lies at Cod fishing and processing, also being an homage to all those that devoted their lives to the Sea and to these Faina Maior - the major fishing expeditions to the frozen seas of Newfoundland and Greenland onboard the mythic cod fishing vessels, first on the great sail-driven schooners and then on the motored trawlers and even the dories, small single person rowboats used for hand line fishing.

Ria de Aveiro Lagoon exhibition includes real scale and miniature boats and the museum also includes an art collection, and another of sea shells and sea weeds. The Cod Aquarium, unique in the country, allows everyone to see this fish at its natural state.

It also includes Museum Ship Santo André, moored at Gafanha da Nazaré, a codfish trawler built in 1948 that aims to shows this period of fisheries and honors the memory of all its crews during half a century of activity.

The maritime museum architectonic and exhibiting quality has, for several times, been internationally awarded, having recently been considered one of the most spectacular museums of the 20th century and being, also, one of the most visited in Portugal.

O discurso expositivo é concluído com o Navio Museu Santo André, na Gafanha da Nazaré, construído em 1948 e mostrando como foram as pescarias do arrasto.

As you enjoy sampling some of the region’s traditional delicacies, you can take pleasure in the panoramic views over the Botirões Canal, one of the canals of the Aveiro Estuary, where the fish used to be unloaded. The kitchen is managed by two hugely experienced chefs who put their hearts and souls into the fish dishes they prepare and which win them fans from all over the world every day.

At the MercadoPeixe Restaurant, you can whet your appetite with some delicious clams, prepared in Bolhão Pato style, with white wine and garlic, or the “Fish Market” style prawns. iseu’s history dates back for more than 2,500 years and there are more than 2,500 reasons for visiting the region.

From the palaces and stately homes to the pillories and crosses, from the bridges and towers to the convents and monasteries, and from the uplands and parks to the rivers and beaches, a journey through this region is an experience that will satisfy all ages and all interests.

A stroll through the city of Viseu’s historical centre will bring you into contact with various eras and styles, starting with the Rua Direita. Lined with manor houses, Manueline windows and shops, this halfkilometre-long street connects two of the city’s seven entrances. Meanwhile, underneath glass panels on Rua Formosa, you will find one of the most emblematic vestiges of the Roman presence in the area:

a fragment of the impressive wall that once surrounded Viseu. Devote some time, too, to the Praça da República, the Casa do Miradouro, the Porta de Soar, the Manueline window of the old Paço da Torre and the churches of Carmo and the Third Order of Saint Francis. Wander through the Fontelo and Aquilino Ribeiro parks, a veritable breath of fresh air in the city. And, in the evening, enjoy a performance at the Viriato Theatre.

Take time to spend some leisurely hours enjoying the Cathedral Square, where you will find not only the cathedral but also the Grão Vasco Museum and the Misericórdia Church (Church of Mercy). This is one of the highest points in the city and one way to get there is the funicular, which departs from the famous São Mateus Fairground.

From here, you can also stroll through the park known as the Parque Linear do Rio Pavia, which takes you alongside the river all the way to the Cava do Viriato Fort. Here you will find a monument to the warrior who fought against the invading Romans and whose name is remembered in the famous viriato cake.

Fica num dos pontos mais elevados de Viseu, ao qual é também possível chegar no funicular que parte do recinto da famosa Feira de São Mateus, onde se pode aproveitar o Parque Linear do Rio Pavia para passeios à beira rio até à Cava do Viriato, uma fortaleza onde erigiram um monumento ao guerreiro que combateu os invasores romanos, e deu nome ao famoso bolo viriato.

But the viriato is not the only cake that will leave sweet memories of your trip... try the pastéis de feijão (sweet bean tartlets) from Mangualde and Vouzela, the sweet egg cream from Viseu and the queijadinhas from Oliveira de Frades. And while we are on the subject of food, there are several main courses that every visitor should sample: Vitela de Lafões (veal), Rancho à Moda de Viseu (chickpea and meat stew), Carolos à Beirão (coarse maize porridge) and Cabrito (kid) from Gralheira and from Caramulo, all washed down with one of the splendid wines from the Dão Demarcated Region.

With your batteries recharged, it’s time for some more exploring. The Beira Alta region is a treasure trove of natural and architectural heritage so head off to the Ecopista do Dão, a cycle and walking route that takes you along 49 kilometres of a former railway line between Santa Comba Dão and Viseu. The views are magnificent and so too are the uplands in the area: Caramulo, from where you can see the sea, Montemuro where wolves still live, and Arada, between the Paiva and Vouga rivers, to name but a few. The Carregal do Sal archaeological circuit is another must-do, taking in the megalithic site at Felgueiras,

E se o viriato adoça as memórias desta viagem, também não fique indiferente aos pastéis de feijão de Mangualde e aos de Vouzela, aos doces de ovos de Viseu e às queijadinhas de Oliveira de Frades. Já no campo dos pratos principais, a Vitela de Lafões, o Rancho à Moda de Viseu, os Carolos à Beirão e o Cabrito da Gralheira e do Caramulo são incontornáveis, como o são os vinhos da Região Demarcada do Dão.

The Baths offer generous service and reception areas, a thermal shop and centralize the entire medical sector.

Composed of individualized hydrotherapy treatment wards intended for men and women, equipped with hydro massage bathtubs, steam chambers for the back, steam chambers for the limbs, showers with massage, jet and needle showers, circular shower and emanatoria.

ocated in the heart of the city of Viseu, the Forum Viseu is one of the region’s shopping hallmarks.

Before the shopping centre was built, this space was where the traditional São Mateus Fair used to be located, alongside the south bank of the River Pavia and next to the historical centre.

The famous Catalan architect Joan Busquets designed the project giving high priority to ensuring that the Forum Viseu would be in harmony with the city centre.

To this end, the main material used in its construction was granite, allowing the shopping centre to blend in perfectly with the other buildings in the old city centre where it is located.

Divided into two low-rise buildings and with a shopping area of 19,689 m2 , the centre offers 49 shops including a supermarket, cinemas and a 350 m2 food court.

Additionally there are 780

parking spaces on three floors and three residential levels too. Currently a top favourite with the locals and adopting a “Fashion” approach, Forum Viseu was the first shopping centre to bring exclusive brands to the region that, to date, can be found nowhere else but here.

he Oeste (Portuguese for “west”) region lives up to the description “land of vineyards and sea”, but it is also a place of castles and aqueducts, beaches and mills, spas and golf courses, and a vast heritage. A land that preserves its history and promotes its modernity.

Going from south to north, start your visit with Arruda dos Vinhos, Sobral de Monte Agraço and Alenquer, with its castle; the Wine and Mill Routes are well worth doing, as is a visit to the Wine Centre and Museum.

A longer stop is advisable when you reach the Torres Vedras area, since there is so much to see and do here: 20 kilometres of beaches and the spa at Vimeiro; the protected landscape of the Socorro and Archeira uplands, which are excellent for birdwatching and where you may also spot foxes, hedgehogs, badgers and various species of butterflies; the Atlantic, Light and Wind Routes; the castle and the

Meanwhile, at the top of the Montejunto Hill in the municipality of Cadaval, you will encounter the ruins of the first Dominican convent in Portugal, close to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Neves (Our Lady of the Snows) and the Real Fábrica do Gelo (Royal Ice Factory). For caving aficionados, there are some great caves and sinkholes in the area.

But if you don’t want to miss even the tiniest bit of this region, where the landscape is dotted with whitewashed houses, make your way to Peniche. Here you will find the fortress, magnificent surfing beaches and the Bobbin Lace Museum, as well as sampling a tasty fish stew or a fish so fresh it practically leaps on to your plate. And you can take a boat across to the Berlengas Island, a unique nature reserve.

As you continue northwards, you cannot fail to be impressed by the mediaeval charms of Óbidos, the castle and the Sanctuary of Senhor da Pedra (Lord of the Stone), and the Eburobrittium Roman ruins. Meanwhile, if you are looking for some active pursuits, the Óbidos Lake offers opportunities for walks and water sports.

Right there you have the Foz do Arelho Beach on one side and the best golf course on the other!
