The

Reading Corner Whatever the season, it's never the wrong time of year for reading. Bedtime wouldn't be bedtime without a story to share. This month, we've been sent a selection of books to review by prolific children's publisher, Maverick. We handed them over to Scarlett & Lily, our trusted reviewers who will give you the lowdown on these stories below. To find out more about these, and other Maverick titles, visit www.maverickbooks.co.uk Professor McQuark and the Oojamaflip By Lou Treleaven and Julia Patton Professor McQuirk is an inventor and she has a marvellous brain. She invents loads of very smart and funny inventions and then one day, she enters a competition for the best invention. And boy does she have a good one! Strictly no Crocs By Heather Pindar and Susan Batori This is a great and funny book. It is about three crocs called Cruncher, Chomper and Snapper. One day Zebra has a birthday party and they are super-excited but the invite says "no crocs". They really want to go so they pretend to be someone else and end up having a whale of a time.

Scarlett (8) and Lily (9) with the books they had so much of fun reviewing.

Hedgehugs - Hopping Hot by Lucy Tapper and Steve Wilson This is the third book about Horace and Hattie, the Hedgehugs, who love to hop. In this book, it is too hot so they have to find ways to hop and be in the shade at the same time. We think this story will make little kids laugh and maybe they will want to hop too ! We enjoyed all of these books and would love to read any of them to Scarlett's little sister at bedtime! Love Scarlett & Lily.

This project aims to support children that are experiencing stress and difficulties in their lives due to poor self-esteem and negative self-belief and as a result maybe failing to reach their potential. We will be using the Arts throughout each session to help awaken and inspire children to develop their creativity which we believe will motivate and encourage them to overcome hurdles, try new things, learn new skills, enhance their emotional literacy and develop their resilience. Artistic programme Throughout the 10 week program we will use many different creative art forms such as; Music and movement, Dance, Drama, Arts and Crafts, and Singing to enhance the learning, development and communication process. These tools will be used to aid the children in their journey of self-discovery and building a positive sense of self. We will be exploring the ideas of identity, encouraging the group to explore their strengths and attributes and find confidence in themselves. In addition there will be a strong focus on leadership throughout the program, participants will be encouraged to step up into leadership roles and those completing the program will be invited to support additional groups in the role of peer mentor. Throughout the program we will be aiming to build a safe, nurturing and supportive group that we believe will enable your child to unlock their power and build inner strength, instill hope and inspiration, build an attitude of gratitude for the world around us, overcome fears and improve relationships with others by looking at how we can learn from one another. These groups are led by a professional Brazilian drum teacher experienced in working with mainstream and additional needs groups. He uses a wide range of Brazilian style drums which are handmade and authentic in their sound and quality, making the whole experience conducive to a therapeutic and inspirational space for children and their siblings to enjoy and come together. The drumming activity can be overseen by parents/carers who can either be involved in the process or observe from a distance and relax with a hot drink. Siblings welcome: We would like to invite siblings along to enjoy the whole experience as well. Research has shown that siblings can often feel ‘left out’ and/or ‘unsupported’ by the parent/carer who is required to give the more vulnerable child necessary ongoing intense care and attention. We feel that including siblings in this creative experience will encourage a healthy bonding for both children, raise self-esteem and allow the parent/carer much needed respite during the sessions. The venue: The People Greenhouse: Hub (www.hubbexhill.co.uk) A beautiful and amazingly inviting space. An old cattle shed has been transformed in design by Talitha who was an Interior Designer and House Magazine Stylist. This multifunctional space is a place where ‘heaven meets earth!’ Peace and love can tangibly be felt both within the walls and beyond into the community garden of dreams. The owners have designed this remarkable place to offer a safe place where people can be loved: body, soul and spirit and feel inspired to make wonderful things happen. Our lead facilitators are fully DBS checked, Qualified First aiders, Insured and have years of experience working with children and young people using the Arts to enhance self-esteem. Ask Alison...

Alison Waterhouse has worked with children with Additional Educational Needs for the past 22 years in both mainstream and the private sector. Initially, she trained as a Special Needs Teacher and has worked in a variety of schools and educational settings. Alison now works as an Independent Educational Consultant for Special Educational Needs and Emotional Well being in both the Independent sector and mainstream. She is involved in staff training for Young Minds and Releasing Potential and she has an Educational Psychotherapy practice. For more information, please visit www.alisonwaterhouse.co.uk. In her regular “question and answer” page, Alison uses her experience to help readers & their children with educational concerns or problems. If there’s something you’d like to ask Alison, email your question to : alison@familybuzz.co.uk I receive many calls and emails from parents about Special Educational Needs or Addition Needs and what this means. Many parents want to support their children but are unsure of how to do this or the system that they have to work within. They are not clear who to talk to in school and how schools work to support children with SEND. Because of this I thought I would take the mystery and fear out of SEND support and how to work in partnerships with schools to get the best for your child.. ‘A child or young person has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her.’ A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if he or she: • has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or • has a disability which prevents or hinders him or her from making use of facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools SEN Code of Practice 2001 At some stage during their education, many children will experience learning difficulties and be said to have special needs. All schools now have to show how they assess and meet the needs of children with SEND on their Web site – this is called their Local Offer. Special Educational Needs have been divided into 4 areas within the new Special Educational Needs and disabilities Code of Practice 0-25 2015: Communication and interaction – this includes children and young people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and those with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) including Asperger’s Syndrome. Cognition and learning – this includes children and young people with moderate learning difficulties (MLD), severe learning difficulties (SLD) and profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). This also includes children and young people with specific learning difficulties (SpLD) such as dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia. Social, emotional and mental health difficulties – social, emotional and mental health difficulties may manifest themselves in many ways including becoming withdrawn or isolated, as well as displaying challenging, disruptive or disturbing behaviour. Other children and young people may have disorders such as attention deficit disorder, attention deficit hyperactive disorder or attachment disorder Sensory and/or physical needs – this includes children and young people with visual impairment (VI), hearing impairment (HI), multi-sensory impairment (MSI) and physical disability (PD)

14

Children rarely just fall into one category as many children have a range of Special Educational Needs and therefore need a range of support. If you think your child has a special educational need or you are worried about their progress and ability to access what is happening within Nursery or School then you need to talk to the Nursery or Schools SENCo – Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator. She/He will listen to your concerns and then help you understand what school is doing to assess or meet the needs of your child. You can also talk to your Information and Advice and Support Service IAS which offers specialist help and support to parents of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. This includes impartial information, advice and support for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities, and their families. Helpline, websites, information sheets and practical help with meetings, paperwork, complaints etc. For East Sussex this is in Lewes. Children can be supported within school in a variety of ways. This may Include a special programme for reading, handwriting, maths or phonics which is delivered by a Specially trained Teaching Assistant or Teacher or it may include assessment or 1:1 work. Some of the programmes parents will have experienced in Primary Schools are: Bulls Eye – a 10 min a day intervention to support the development of sight vocabulary and give a boost to reading, PLR – Personalised Learning for Reading – a 20 min a day high level intervention to support literacy, Phonics Booster Groups, Maths Booster groups, Jump head – co-ordination and movement support, Fizzy Hands – fine motor skills support, Sensory Diets – support to help focus and concentration for children with SPD, Speed Up – handwriting support, Write from the Sart – Handwriting support as well as Visual Processing support, Language Link and Speech Ling – both support programmes for Speech and Language needs, SEAL – Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning, Nurture Groups, Learning Mentors plus many more. If a school is worried about Speech and Language then they are able to access specialised help from a Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) This can take a little time as there will be a waiting list. The SALT may then assess the child or young person and devise a programme that can be delivered by school staff within school. If a school is worried about fine or gross motor skills – co-ordination and movement or small movements such as handwriting then they can access the help of an Occupational Therapist. (OT) The OT may then assess a child and as with the SALT set an individual programme that the school staff can follow in school to support that child. Schools can also access the Educational Psychology service. The Educational Psychologists both support staff in how to manage a range of needs within the classroom as well as

assess and advise on individual children. This assessment may cover cognition and learning including processing, memory, maths and literacy skills. They will then advise school on how to support that child. Special Needs are diagnosed by different professionals. Any medical diagnosis needs to be diagnosed by a medical practitioner. This is often a paediatrician. The Paediatrician’s often work in multi-disciplinary teams which include a SALT and OT. These might include ASD, Sensory Processing, Speech and Language disorders, dyspraxia and a host of other medical needs. An Educational Psychologist mainly focuses on Cognition and Learning. This may include dyslexia, dyscalculia, issues with working memory, processing or other related difficulties. If any of the above professionals are requested to assess or support children then parents will always be asked for permission and will be given copies of any assessment documentation. Other professionals schools can call upon are the Behaviour Support Team, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Team (The CAMHS Team would support anxiety disorders, ADHD, OCD, PDAS, Conduct disorders etc) Therapists and Specialist support Teachers. (ASD Specialist Teachers, Dyslexic Specialist Teachers, Learning Support Teachers) If a child is being supported in school then parents are normally informed about this using a Provision Map. This details the type of support, who is delivering it, how long this will continue for and the goals of the support. This is normally reviewed every term. If a school or parent feels that a child needs a high level of support then a School Based Action Plan can be initiated. This details the needs of the child and how the school will be supporting those needs. The SBAP is often the precursor to a request to the LEA for an Education Health Care Plan. This has taken over from the Statements that used to be awarded to children to ensure that the support they needed was in place and reviewed annually. The SBAP is a document that is completed by the SENCo and the parent as a way to ensure that the parent and child’s voice is heard and that both are included in the process of finding and supporting the SEND that the child or young person has. If you want or need to know more then the SEND Code of Practice 0-25 provides statutory guidance on duties, policies and procedures that have to be followed by schools and LEA to support children and families.

What is Educational Psychotherapy? For parents whose children are struggling at school, stuck in their learning, anxious or depressed, who have stopped thriving or are acting out, life can become overwhelming, full of worry and confusion as they try to find help for their children. Educational Psychotherapy is a powerful approach to addressing these issues. It is a way of meeting the child’s individual learning needs, which in turn positively affects their ability to cope within the classroom. Educational Psychotherapy is a way of working with children which combines teaching with therapeutic exploration of the emotional factors triggered by learning. It is recommended for children and young people who have become ‘stuck’ due to complex emotional barriers to learning and development. Barriers to learning and development may manifest themselves as: •

Poor attitudes to learning based on attachment patterns,

Failure to learn,

Withdrawal,

Difficult behaviour,

Difficulty with social interactions and friendships,

Violence or aggressive outbursts,

Physical symptoms,

Anxiety,

Difficulties with transitions,

Restlessness and an inability to focus,

An inability to make good use of the learning environment or the teacher. Educational Psychotherapy produces real benefits in children’s emotional well being and their capacity to learn and engage with schools. By helping children and young people overcome these emotional barriers to learning, their self esteem, resilience and skills for learning are strengthened and engagement, positive relationships and sense of well being are promoted. FUN DANCE CLASSES

Dancing Divas/Demons and Pulse Dance Company’s ethos is fun first and our policy is everyone is included. Our dancer’s ages range from 4 to 16 and we dance all sorts of genres depending on what we feel like doing; one week we could be dancing to Uptown Funk and the next week we could be doing musical theatre to Mary Poppins. The older students are welcome to bring their own choreography and ideas, so it is very much their club. We don’t charge an arm and a leg, with you choosing whether to pay weekly or once a term, plus there are discounts for siblings. Our clubs are very parent friendly and should parents wish to stay and watch their children dance we welcome that with open arms.
