elcome to the July/August Golden Times with a packed magazine and a few changes. Since 2011 we've had Frank writing about his travel memoirs, but he's decided to take a break. Replacing him this month though, we have Mike Raxworthy who will be bringing us news about the vibrant and exciting local live music scene. Mike's on page 28 this time, we're really pleased to have him on board. Gracing the cover this month is a photo celebrating our automotive heritage from the Hellingly Festival of Transport. The photo comes courtesy of the Festival's organisers and was taken by John Bishop. The Hellingly Festival is one of many Classic car events happening this summer, details of the event can be found on page 17. Thanks to all of our advertisers and contributors, old and new for helping us create such a great magazine. I hope you all enjoy reading it, and make sure you enter our fantastic competition on page 16! - Jason

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME AND ASSETS AGAINST CARE FEES AND FUTURE MARRIAGES Most people who co-own their home with another person do so as Joint Owners. They both own the whole property. On the death of a Joint Owner, the home AUTOMATICALLY becomes the sole property of the survivor - who can then do what they want with it. However this can cause problems: If the survivor then remarries, it is possible that the whole of the house will then pass to their new spouse on their death, thus disinheriting the children of the first marriage. OR If the survivor has to go into a Nursing or Residential Home, as the sole owner of the property, the Local Authority has powers to charge the cost of care against the value of the whole house, again disinheriting the children. The answer to all of these problems, is to change the way the home is owned from Joint Owners to Tenants in Common - a straightforward process that doesn't involve the mortgage company even if the property is mortgaged. As Tenants in Common each owner owns one half of the property and, using a Will, can do whatever they wish with their share of the property on their death, including: 1. leaving it to their (own) children so that is the surviving spouse remarries they will only own their own half of the property and can only give their own share to their new spouse. 2. leaving it to their (own) children so that if a surviving spouse needs care, the Local Authority can only charge

4

the cost of care against the half of the house that they own - ensuring in either case that their children inherit at least half of the value of their home. In fact recent case law indicates that the value of half a house (providing the owners of the other half don't want to sell their share) is effectively Nil and in these circumstances the Local Authority may not be able to charge any of the cost of care against the value of the house. We do, however, recommend that in the above situations provisions are also made in the Will, through a Will trust, to delay the gift and prevent the surviving spouse being forced out of the home and also to ensure that the surviving spouse can have access to the capital and/or income if the house is sold. This type of trust is called a Life Interest Trust and is sometimes marketed as a Property Protection Trust. Protecting your savings etc The trusts referred to above can also be used to protect savings etc from loss in the event of re marriage or the need to fund care fees. This type of trust is also a Life Interest Trust but is sometimes marketed as a Flexible Life Interest Trust. Please note that these arrangements only apply to couples who are drafting Wills. They are not effective for single people. It is therefore essential to plan early.

PAYING FOR LATER LIFE CARE - FUNDING OPTIONS For those who require care and have low levels of capital, their Local Authority will contribute towards the shortfall in the cost of care when relevant capital falls below the upper threshold of £23,250. This contribution will increase as relevant capital falls to the lower threshold of £14,250, at which point 100% of care costs will be met by the Local Authority (in line with Local Authority Rates). For someone who may have relevant available capital (for example up to £500,000 including the sale proceeds of a home) there are a number of options available. Option 1 Draw down capital to fund the shortfall until the upper threshold of £23,250 is reached, at which point the Local Authority start to contribute. The big disadvantage of this, is there is a high risk of eroding capital that you may have intended to pass on to the next generation and the possibility of having to move to a cheaper care home when the Local Authority start to contribute. Option 2 By careful selection of an appropriately structured care plan, the shortfall in the cost of care will be paid FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE in return for a one off capital payment to the care plan provider. The major advantage of this is you can potentially cap the cost of quality lifetime care. This will enable you to remain in the care home of your choice, while retaining funds that maybe left within your Will to the next generations. For those with higher levels of capital, by investing a proportion into income generating funds, the shortfall in the cost of care can be met. Any remaining capital can be invested into a choice of Inheritance Tax Saving plans that will potentially increase the capital left to your family.

Laughter - by Julia Meanwell With the fearful strain that is on me night and day, if I did not laugh I should die. Abraham Lincoln

Laughter is so good for us but do we get enough of it? It relaxes us, relieves physical tension and boosts our immune system. Through laughter natural pain killing substances found in the human brain called endorphins are released. The capacity to laugh effortlessly and often is a wonderful resource for overcoming problems, improving relationships, increasing both physical and emotional health. Laughter also increases blood flow which may alleviate heart problems from developing. Hunter “Patch” Adams is an American doctor well documented for using humour in his medical practice; he considers laughter and joy to be an integral part of the healing process. He believes that being happy may be the most important health factor in your life. The great thing about this type of medicine is that it’s fun, doesn’t cost anything and is user friendly. Laughter shared connects us to other people and increases happiness and intimacy; furthermore there’s no language barrier. I find that I get good mileage out of remembering times when I’ve laughed until I’ve cried and how even after many years I can still enjoy that good feeling all over again.

Local counsellor Julia Meanwell, has been in practice for over 20 years, she has a wealth of experience, empathy and understanding to offer clients. Julia began her counselling career as a relationship counsellor with Relate which incorporated working in television and radio.

William Fry is a pioneer in laughter research; he claimed it took ten minutes on a rowing machine for his heart rate to reach the level it would after just one minute of hearty laughter. Laughter also appears to burn calories, Maciej Buchowski, a researcher from Vanderbilt University, conducted a small study in which he measured the amount of calories expended in laughing. It turned out that 10-15 minutes of laughter burned 50 calories. Our brains are primed to smile at the appealing sound of roaring laughter; it is contagious so why not spread it around; it’s one of the few things that people don’t mind catching!

If you would like to find out more about the counselling Julia offers then please take a look at her website juliameanwellcounselling. co.uk She can be contacted by email Julia. meanwell@gmail.com or give her a call on 07714 280083.

SCENIC SUSSEX

Once again we're able to showcase the talents of our readers, we've had some beautiful shots sent in recently, thanks to everyone and keep them coming! The first and second photos on the left of the page are from Ashley Hemsley. At the top is a shot of the Beachy Head lighthouse taken at low tide, below is a very atmospheric shot of Downash fishing lakes at dawn. 3rd is a shot of St Leonards Seafront taken by Terry Blackman. Terry also took the photo of a delightful rural lane in Winchelsea on the bottom right hand side of this page. The "sheep in the mist" were sent in by Brenda Mackintosh who snapped them while walking with Hastings Ramblers near Pett. The bright and bold daffodils below were sent to us by Lisa Longfield. In the background of the page, I've used one of my own photographs, taken on Hastings Pier after some rain. I'm hugely grateful to everyone who's contributed here, I can't wait to see what we'll be sent next, and I look forward to publishing more in our September/October issue - Jason

If you're a keen photographer and would be interested in seeing some of your work featured in Golden Times, you can email your images to me at : jason@goldentimes.co.uk, Happy snapping!

WIN 3 Pairs of TICKETS IN THIS FANTASTIC READER GIVEAWAY! Agatha Christie's Mousetrap is probably the most famous murder mystery in the history of theatre and has been running continuously in London's West End for 64 years! We are delighted to be able to offer a pair of tickets for the show, to THREE lucky readers who enter our competition! Agatha Christie once said of the play "It is the sort of play you can take anyone to. It is not really frightening. It is not really horrible. It is not really a farce, but it has a little bit of all these things and perhaps that satisfies a lot of different people." When asked at the age of 82 whether she still enjoyed writing, she's said to have replied " I wouldn’t say that anyone enjoys their work. I mean you have chosen something as your profession and you just get on with it. It is great fun thinking about writing and planning it and getting ready to do it, but when it gets down to the hard work, it isn't so much fun."

16

Writing it may have been hard work, but enjoying the performance certainly won't be! Each winner of the competition will receive a pair of tickets to see The Mousetrap at St Martin's Theatre, West Street, London. You will be able to choose tickets for one performance, Monday to Thursday (excluding Bank Holidays) at 7.30pm or a 3pm matinee on a Tuesday. To be in with a chance of winning, simply email your answer to the following question to win@goldentimes.co.uk or send your answer on a postcard to : 78 Elphinstone Road, Hastings, TN34 2BS. The question is : In which year did the record breaking run of the Mousetrap begin ? Entries must arrive by Friday August 5th, you must use your tickets within 3 months. Lily Time at Pashley Manor Gardens 㻌

㻳㻭㻾㻰㻱㻺㻿㻌

‘One of the finest gardens in England’㻌

Visit Pashley Manor Gardens, on the border of Sussex and Kent, to see Romantic English landscaping and artistic planting framed by fine old trees, fountains and ponds, with the unusual Tudor/Georgian manor house, which is a private family home, creating a memorable backdrop to the beautiful and dynamic gardens. Delight in the sweeping herbaceous borders, elegant rose and historic walled gardens, the productive kitchen garden, enchanting woodland paths and tranquil vistas that form this award winning garden. Relish the gardeners’ attention to detail; savour the homemade, local food in the café; relax on the terrace with refreshments; be captivated by the exhibitions of sculpture and art; peruse the gift shop and be charmed by the knowledgeable and friendly team. In July the kitchen garden is at its most productive and lilies start to perfume the air, blooming through to mid-August and then at the end of August, the Sussex Guild hold their Craft Show at Pashley over the Bank Holiday weekend.

YOU'RE HOW OLD ? by Michele Duke Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about age. It is my 57th birthday in a few days and I’m taken by surprise to realise I am well over half-way through my life. Did you know your biological age can be different from your actual age in years? We all know those people who tell you they are 80 but look 60, who run for the bus and are the last person on the dance floor. Their body just doesn’t know it’s 80. I just did some online quizzes which tell me my biological age is 35 - 42. This is based on environmental and lifestyle factors and is not likely to be very accurate, but it makes me happy to think that my body believes

itself younger than it actually is. But what can we do to trick our bodies into acting younger than our years? We all know the sun does the most harm to our skin. Other factors play a part in causing wrinkles and ageing skin. Pollution, diet, lifestyle and your genes all contribute. I’ve always used day cream with a minimum SPF15, never smoked and eat a vegetarian diet so I guess my mother takes the blame for a lot of my lines – oh, and my love of wine! These days my focus is on slowing down the signs of ageing. I want people to be surprised when I say I’m 75 so I am taking it seriously now. What about you? Using SPF15 or 20 on your face and neck, every day, all year round is the first step. DO a bit of research and find targeted anti-ageing skincare which has proven benefits and which you enjoy using every day. Use it consistently for the best results. I have some videos on my website showing you a one minute skincare routine. And it isn’t only women who are at the mercy of the

years. It has taken me a long time to persuade my husband to use a moisturiser and eye cream and to exfoliate regularly but he grudgingly accepts it is making a difference. It’s now become a regular routine for him and he hardly notices he’s doing it. But I see him looking more youthful, with a fresher, brighter complexion. And it makes me happy that he wants to look good. Just as important as our skin are the other factors that keep us youthful. Eating better and less not only makes us feel better, it slows down cell degeneration so keeps us younger longer. Giving up smoking and being more active have significant benefits. Taking up new challenges is fantastic for making us feel and act younger but keeping your brain active takes more than just doing the crossword. At the age of 56, I launched a new beauty business which has given me a whole new set of challenges as well as new friends and a better standard of living. Whilst it is very flexible and parttime, it has galvanised me to focus on achieving results and I love that I have a reason to dress up and get out to meet new people. Lots of people are taking up new roles and even new careers in their 50s and 60s. What’s stopping you? . Michèle x I am Michèle Duke and I run a Style & Beauty business in St Leonards with tutorials and workshops to learn how to look and feel fabulous. I help others start small businesses from home and provide ongoing support to help them grow and prosper. If you’d like to know more please give me a ring on 07801 621310. Demonstrations, workshops and tutorials. Call me for dates and more details on 07801 621310. See my website at www.micheleduke.co.uk.

LIVING THE ALEXANDER WAY OF LIFE by Liz Jeffries

Oh to be young again...

Does this thought ever cross your mind? I was thinking about this the other day, when I was visiting my mother in law in a retirement complex, and noticed this sign, which I playfully call “Beware of Elderly People sign”! Personally I am not a fan of the sign, mainly because it stereotypes our view of how people with advancing years will be in later life. In other words, it assumes we will all be stooped and walking with a stick. There is nothing wrong with that, of course, and sometimes we have conditions which contribute to this. However, I do not believe that there is an inevitability we will all end up this way. I have spent the best part of thirty years looking at how we use the body in activity. This started after I suffered debilitating back pain. I have said many times over the ensuing years that I am grateful for having back pain because of all the interesting discoveries I have made through my Alexander Technique work.

24

When I was in my teens, I remember my Dad coming up behind me and gently pulling back my shoulders. I was slouching, but didn’t realise it. This is the crux of the matter really – we develop poor postural habits over the years because we are unaware it is happening.

We all tend to have postural habits. Try this – fold your arms in front of you, then the other way round without thinking about it. It may not be so instinctive the second way simply because we are more used to doing it the first way. You just have to look at toddlers to realise how freely they move. I have a lovely sixteen month old step granddaughter and there is no better illustration of great head

and back co-ordination and that head/back relationship is key to releasing pain and tension. We can change habits at any age if we are prepared to think about what we do. Recently I came across a video on Facebook of actor Dick Van Dyke, of ‘Mary Poppins’ fame. He was appearing in a Disney tribute programme and he came on stage doing a short dance routine from his famous chimney sweep roof top scene. He is ninety years old! There is hope for us all. I teach the principles of the Alexander Technique both individually and in groups (maximum of six people). "The Tramp" by Linda Taylor

He sat down on the park bench and leant forward on the shabby trousers that just covered his craggy knees. The trousers were shiny, once of a brown colour but now darkened with mud and dirt. They were old fashioned with baggy, wide style legs and like most of his attire they too were beginning to grow too thread bare for much longer use. He searched the waste paper bin and found a discarded half eaten cheese sandwich. Putting it to his long, weather browned nose he sniffed at it. It smelt pretty new, perhaps just a day or two old and the birds had not scavenged at it yet. They came less due to an owl that had been seen up in the oak tree. He munched at the sandwich and spat out some cucumber. He had always loathed cucumber sandwiches even in the old days, when they had salt and vinegar sprinkled over them, folded over oh so neatly in crust- less bread. Two young women, dressed in tight blue jeans worn torn at the knees, clinging tee shirts that exposed voluptuous, bobbing breasts beneath, strolled past him on spindly heels and giggled. Sighing, he pulled and stroked at his grey and white stringy beard. Memories flooded back of his lust and how he had been fleeced so often for payment to them. Lust had died, along with love, moons ago. He felt inside his shabby anorak pocket for a dog- end cigarette and a match and struck it against his battered boots, re lit the last of the cigarette end. A few acrid puffs were managed. ‘Help! Help!’ he heard a female cry; screwing up his rheumy eyes he

stared down towards the path that lead to an old greenhouse. ‘Help! Someone help me!’ He rose, snatching up two carrier bags of life’s belongings and walked steadily towards the greenhouse. One young woman was prostrate on the ground and the other with no shoes, was bent over her. Tears and mascara ran down her cheeks. ‘What do I do?’ He thrust his bags aside and knelt down on the concrete, the pain searing through his arthritic knees. Blowing into her sweet scented mouth and pressing on soft, malleable breasts she finally breathed out, opened her big brown eyes and lay still, staring up at him. ‘Oh my God!’ the other woman stood watching, her thumb working madly at her mobile phone. Turning the recumbent girl onto her side, the recovery position, he stood up. ‘She should be okay’ was all he said. The girl had sent for an ambulance; stood staring back at him, her full red lipped mouth hung open in disbelief. ‘Thank you, oh, thank you…’she said. The dreaded sound of an ambulance’s siren grew nearer. Turning his back on her, chuckling to himself, he trod wearily back to his bench, hoping it would still be vacant, confident that if it wasn’t, it soon would be. s

Gardening tips for Mid-Summer by Phoenix Gardening Summer is in full swing and what to do in the garden? Regularly dead head border plants to keep them flowering. Hoe beds and borders regularly to keep weeds down, it’s best to do this on sunny days so that weeds can dry out and die. If you’re going to take semi-ripe cuttings, now is the time to do it. If you have plants in pots or containers feed them regularly, feed tomatoes and chrysanthemums. If you have early flowering chrysanthemums dis-bud them now. Keep an eye out for pests and diseases such as aphids and white fly along with mildew. If you spot any spray promptly, pests in the greenhouse can also be controlled by biological means. Order bulb and bulb catalogues for autumn delivery. Also summer prune cordon and espalier apples. Moving into late summer lift onions and shallots as they become ready, sow cabbages for spring use. If you haven’t already done so now is time to clip beech, yew, hornbeam and most evergreen hedges. Thinking ahead you can plant colchicums to flower in the autumn if you’re in one of the milder areas or can provide frost protection you can sow some hardy annuals to overwinter.

He'll be keeping us informed of where to find the best gigs happening in the local area! HASTINGS: We are so privileged in this town to have such a vibrant live music scene. There’s hardly a day in the week when you won’t find some live music in one bar or another, and you can bet that it’s going to be top quality entertainment.

with MIKE RAXWORTHY Most Wednesday nights (9pm) in Porters Wine Bar, High Street, Old Town, you can see the superb award-winning jazzer Liane Carroll for just the price of a glass of wine! Dining out at the Albion, Hastings Old Town Recently refurbished and under new ownership, we visited the Albion in Hastings recently to sample their lunch-time menu. Fast making a name for itself as a great venue for live music during the evenings, the Albion presents a much more relaxed ambiance to lunchtime diners. The interior is cosy and wood-panelled and makes for a relaxing place to while away the early afternoon. The menu offers a unique take on perennially popular pub lunch staples, such as sausage and mash, fish & chips, ribs, and burgers, all at £9.50. Sandwiches, salads and lighter options are also available. We plumped for two options from the specials board on the day, Cajun chicken and seafood linguine, both pictured here on the right. The Cajun chicken was not only succulent and perfectly spiced, but

28

huge! Enough to satisfy the hungriest of diners and the crispy, spiced chunky chips a perfect accompaniment. The seafood linguine was equally impressive, packed with an abundance of shellfish and served in a deliciously creamy sauce. The bar is well stocked and offers a range to suit all tastes, I enjoyed a very well kept pint of Harveys with my meal. There is also a good selection of wines on offer. The range of desserts were equally tempting, even after enjoying such large portions. Once we'd composed ourselves slightly, we managed to share some delicious salted caramel ice cream. So if a stroll round Hastings Old Town has left your tummy rumbling, we can heartily recommend popping into the Albion to enjoy good food and friendly service in a traditional British pub setting.

Farfalle with Aubergine and King Prawns - Recipe by Faz Razeen Farfalle, sometimes known as "bow-tie pasta", derived from the Italian word farfalla. The "e" at the end of the word is the Italian feminine plural ending, making the meaning of the word "butterflies". Aubergine comes in a wide variety of shapes, colours and sizes. The aubergine can also be ivory-coloured, which almost certainly led people in some countries to name it the ‘eggplant’. Ingredients (Serves 4-6): 2 aubergines 250g farfalle pasta (use half from a 500g packet) 150g cooked king prawns Salt and pepper to season 100ml extra virgin oil 400g tin cherry tomatoes 2-3 celery stalks sliced in cubes half inch size and keep celery leaves for garnishing 2 red onions sliced 200g green olives pitted Generous pinch of dried chilli flakes 2 tbsp. salted capers 3 cloves of garlic, chopped finely 2 tbsp. castor sugar 2 tbsp. red wine vinegar Bunch of basil leaves Prawns with shell for garnish

Method: Cut the aubergine into 1in cubes, heat the oil in a large frying pan, then fry the aubergine until golden brown for about 10 minutes, then empty onto a plate and set aside. In the same frying pan, add a little oil and fry onions on medium heat until softened for a couple minutes, and then add celery, garlic, olives, capers and chilli flakes. Cook for 10 minutes stirring occasionally, then add fried aubergine cubes, tinned cherry tomatoes and a handful of coarsely chopped fresh basil leaves. Simmer for 5 minutes on medium heat, in the meantime add sugar and red vinegar, stirring occasionally. Meanwhile, cook your pasta in plenty of boiling salted water, simmer for 10 minutes for an authentic ‘al dente’ texture, another 2 minutes for a softer texture. Drain well and serve the cooked aubergine and king prawns on a bed of pasta (You may add other sea food such as

anchovies, sardines, mussels and salmon etc.) Add a drizzle of extra virgin oil and garnish with a handful of fresh basil, celery leaves and sliced lemon.
