Are Baby Boomers Drinking too Much ? by Julia Meanwell If the study carried out by Kings College in London is anything to go by then it seems the answer is a definite ‘yes’. They have found that many baby boomers are drinking too much and in some cases at dangerous levels. The oldest of the baby-boomer generation are now reaching old age and are clearly drinking more than previous generations. A spokesperson for Age UK said: "excessive drinking in later life is a serious problem that is often linked to other issues such as bereavement, loneliness and isolation. Whilst the spotlight on excessive drinking generally falls on younger people, the most significant increases in alcohol related harm are actually in older age groups." The 57 year old ex-footballer Kenny Sansom was quoted as saying that battling alcoholism is a game of two halves' after he was allegedly found drunk face-down in an alleyway recently. He said that he gets drunk to forget about his problems and that he is a coward who is scared of life. George Best, another football legend I read about recently was allegedly suffering from undiagnosed depression; maybe he would have survived if he had received the professional help he needed earlier before he became a problem drinker. Hearing of anyone reaching this downward spiral of self-destruction and self-loathing is heartbreaking. What is needed is help and understanding without judgement but the first step to recovery is

PAYING FOR LATER LIFE CARE - FUNDING OPTIONS For those who require care and have low levels of capital, their Local Authority will contribute towards the shortfall in the cost of care when relevant capital falls below the upper threshold of £23,250. This contribution will increase as relevant capital falls to the lower threshold of £14,250, at which point 100% of care costs will be met by the Local Authority (in line with Local Authority Rates). For someone who may have relevant available capital (for example up to £500,000 including the sale proceeds of a home) there are a number of options available. Option 1 Draw down capital to fund the shortfall until the upper threshold of £23,250 is reached, at which point the Local Authority start to contribute. The big disadvantage of this, is there is a high risk of eroding capital that you may have intended to pass on to the next generation and the possibility of having to move to a cheaper care home when the Local Authority start to contribute. Option 2 By careful selection of an appropriately structured care plan, the shortfall in the cost of care will be paid FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE in return for a one off capital payment to the care plan provider. The major advantage of this is you can potentially cap the cost of quality lifetime care. This will enable you to remain in the care home of your choice, while retaining funds that maybe left within your Will to the next generations. For those with higher levels of capital, by investing a proportion into income generating funds, the shortfall in the cost of care can be met. Any remaining capital can be invested into a choice of Inheritance Tax Saving plans that will potentially increase the capital left to your family.

"The Queen's Honours List" by Gladys Lopato
She stood tall in the ceremonial antechamber awaiting her turn. Her outfit and fascinator had been chosen with utmost care to compliment her colour scheme. Her mind flashed back encapsulating a life’s journey. ---------‘I told you don’t interrupt, in fact don’t speak at all,’ screamed her mother. This was nothing new and Eleanor should have known better and kept quiet. She slid off the chair and headed up the stairs to her room. It was sparsely furnished with no place to keep any treasures a seven year old would want but she had a special box in her locker at school and another hiding place in the barn. ‘Of course every young person needs a secret treasure chest,’ acknowledged Farmer Parfitt. ‘I don’t mind you popping in every now and again – shall we say “to check on the cows and sheep”. Your secret is safe with me,’ continued the co-conspirator. She was anxious to put in the latest book swapped for her apple. While most children dreaded the end of the weekend and the fact that Mondays kept coming around, Eleanor counted the hours through the two day break, eager to return to order and reason. Mrs Dunstable, the librarian and English teacher had opened the door on a world that Eleanor had never dreamed of and it was like the “yellow brick road” story she had read, leading her ever onwards to greater achievement. ‘Have you finished L Frank Baum’s story already, you seem to devour each book faster than the one before.’ We've had a great response to our request for reader's photos, here are some of the cracking images you've sent in. If you've got a photo you'd like to see in Golden Times, email it to me at: jason@goldentimes.co.uk.
Through the reading and helpful nurturing of Mrs Dunstable Eleanor had learnt that there could be another kind of life from that which she had to endure. She studied diligently and gained a scholarship. Nothing could stop her now. Eleanor had a plan. She would move away from home and begin a different life. On reaching adulthood she would change her name by Deed Pole. Thus Norah Featherstone was created. Norah also cut her hair and changed the colour and took on board the advice of a life style coach. Ms Featherstone became well known for her charity work and achievements regarding the establishment of a special child foundation, the format of which had been replicated across the country. ---------The crowd fell silent. Norah had a lapel hook fastened to her jacket and was escorted forward. She would treasure the special comments made as her ribbon was attached. The ceremony concluded, the Queen processed through the crowd who demonstrated the appropriate acknowledgement. What a day it had been. Norah stood on the steps of the Palace and held up her medal for the photographers, her friends gathered round. She wondered if anyone from her previous life recognise this celebrity with her OBE ? s If you would like to submit a short story (450-500 words) for inclusion in Golden Times, please email jason@goldentimes.co.uk or post your story to us at: 78 Elphinstone Road, Hastings, East Sussex, TN34 2BS

Importance of Men’s Health
The Benenden Hospital Trust is a company limited by guarantee. Registered in England, number 3454120. Registered charity number 1065995. Registered office, The Benenden Hospital Trust, Goddard’s Green Road, Benenden, Cranbrook, Kent TN17 4AX
Beating stress is this year’s focus for Men’s Health Week, which begins on 13 June and culminates on Fathers Day. Whilst stress has an immediate effect on your body, small doses are not necessarily a bad thing. However, chronic stress over a prolonged period of time does put your health at risk. Is ‘Man-flu’ a cry for help? In the short-term stress stimulates the immune system helping to fight off infections but over time it can compromise the body’s ability to fight back and recover from illness or injury. That’s why men shouldn’t ignore a heavy dose of ‘man flu’ as it could be masking a more serious condition – particularly when the body or mind is under stress. Regular check ups are necessary for men to protect themselves against injuries, illnesses and diseases that develop with age. Screenings and assessments Periodic GP assessments should include height and weight, vision, hearing and dental examinations as well as blood tests and required immunisations. However, in your fifties and above, further screening for men should include type2 diabetes, depression and stress, with specialist diagnostic facilities required for colon and prostrate cancer as well as osteoporosis and MRI scans for hip and knee replacements. Benenden Hospital – a centre of excellence Benenden Hospital is an option for diagnostic tests and has some of the most modern facilities available for consultation, diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of men’s health issues
including urology, prostate and orthopaedics. The hospital has a diagnostic suite fully equipped to provide MRI and CT scans, Barium, Ultrasound and Doppler studies, together with biopsies and general X-rays. The hospital is a centre of excellence for: Orthopaedics, with almost 400 hip and knee replacements carried out last year alone; Varicose Vein removal, being the UK’s largest single-site provider for Endovenous Laser Treatment, the minimally invasive technology for the removal of varicose veins; and Cataract surgery, delivered by the highly specialist team of consultants, optometrists and nursing staff. O
Tricia's column - Half term fun (Hopefully) in the sun nce again my favourite time of year is just around the corner. Well, it will be by the time you're reading this, as I write it, there's a very chilly wind blowing outside, but it takes time to put Golden Times together, so I have to write about Mayday and Midsummer while April Showers are rattling my window pane! Still I'm not going to complain about having to get into a summer frame of mind to write this, I'll just turn the heating up, put some flip-flops on and pretend... I have heard often how lovely it is to walk on a windy beach on a cold, crisp winter's day, but I prefer a gentle, warm breeze and the air being hot enough to make a paddle refreshing. And if the British weather refuses to treat me properly, I shan't feel guilty abut flitting off to the Mediterranean for some summer sun. When we are lucky with the weather, Sussex really is a wonderful place to be. Hastings Pier (Pictured) will be open again by the time you're reading this, I look forward to having a stroll on it's newest incarnation. I've got some wonderful memories of the pier in summertime, watching people reel in fresh mackerel straight from a glass-calm sea! Well done to all involved in bringing it back to life!
As much as I love summer, there's rarely a quiet moment. You can see from the pages following my column there is a huge variety of events to tempt you out of the house during May and June. This gives me no shortage of ideas for things to do with the grandchildren, some fantastic shows, ideas for days out, fun packed and fabulous, they'll love being dragged away from their computer games and into the fresh air ! Fayres, fetes, fundays and festivals, bike-rides and barbecues, paddling and promenading, we'll be trying to cram it all in before the clocks go back. I hope Golden Times readers will be out there enjoying it all too. Nothing keeps you feeling young quite like getting out and about, seeing and doing whatever tickles your fancy. Our sister magazine, The Family Buzz is taking it's early summer break, but it will be back in July so do keep an eye out for that ! If you do attend and event or visit a venue you've found in Golden Times, please remember to mention us! I shall be back in July for more, have fun! -

Early Summer at Pashley Manor Gardens 㻌
㻳㻭㻾㻰㻱㻺㻿㻌
‘One of the finest gardens in England’㻌
In late spring 30,000 tulips, from palest pink to nearly black to brightest red, create dazzling mantles of colour in every flower bed, pot and border at Pashley. Representatives from Bloms Bulbs will be on site throughout the festival, which continues every day to 7th May, with a display of 2,000 cut tulips and to offer advice and take bulb orders for delivery in the autumn. With sweeping vistas, formal walled gardens and winding woodland paths Pashley is a perfect landscape for sculpture, with some pieces providing focal points while others are tantalisingly glimpsed amidst trees and flowers - the exhibition of sculpture in the gardens runs all season, with most pieces available for sale. In addition, for the eight days of the Sculpture in Particular at the end of May, there is a display and sale of maquettes and small sculpture indoors. In mid-June the 100+ varieties of roses come into flower and should be at their peak during the Special Rose Week - when Pashley’s Head Gardener will be giving rose talks and there will be a fantastic selection of Chelsea Gold medal winning Peter Beales potted roses on sale.

Gardening tips for late Spring/early Summer by Phoenix Gardening Sometimes late spring can be a bit deceptive just when you think everything has warmed up you can be surprised by a late frost. So keep an eye on the weather. You can sow vegetables outside without protection now but always read the packet just to be on the safe side. If you’ve grown any cabbage and cauliflower seedlings they can go out now too. Forsythia can be pruned once it has finished flowering and so can Ribes Sanguineum, for those tall herbaceous plants it’s a good idea to stake them now or put supports in place before they take off. Hardy annuals can be sown and summer bulbs planted. That mower should be being used regularly by now and it’s a good time to harden off tender bedding plants. Early summer now. If you like your vegetables it’s a good idea to make successional sowings of beetroot, carrot, lettuce and turnips that way you always have some on the go but not a glut. Keep an eye out for aphids on broad beans and root flies on cabbages, onions and carrots. Dead head border plants regularly to keep them flowering, lilac, philadelphus, spirea and broom can all be pruned now after they have finished flowering. Biennials such as wallflowers and forget me nots can be sown now. Check roses for aphids or mildew and treat where necessary, once the main flush of flowers is over you can apply a rose fertilizer. Finish hardening off those bedding plants.
I just love living by the sea and this time of year is particularly special. On sunny days the sea is sparkling, the sunsets are spectacular and the evenings are long. Yes, the rainy days are still here (this is England!) but even they can be pretty amazing, with short, intense bursts forcing people to scurry into doorways to avoid the deluge. Now is the time for a “style overhaul”. You want to look fresh and vibrant, and you can’t do that wearing your faded, worn out old clothes. Updating your wardrobe with some crisp, fresh new pieces will make you look and feel as zingy as the weather. The colour trend this season is pastels. You’ll see baby-blues and cute pale pink everywhere. Treat with caution unless you know these colours suit you. Many of us need bolder colours to stop us looking “washed out”. White is always stylish – the classic white shirt is a wardrobe staple – and can be paired with a pastel sweater or modern jacket for a contemporary look. Short skirts are still with us. If you’ve got the legs, go for it, but remember to team with flats and cover up your top half. Dresses are gaining in popularity and are definitely on my “up” list. I’m wearing daytime dresses more – it saves time and always looks stylish. I prefer just above the knee for a youthful but modest silhouette. Avoid mid-length as this can be ageing. If you want to go longer, be bold and go for just above the ankle.
Do you look after a relative, friend or neighbour who couldn’t manage without your help?
HAPPY SPRING by Michele Duke
Capri pants are a godsend for women over 50. They are classic, comfortable and say “summer is on it’s way”. They look fab with an oversized shirt and colourful scarf. You can go a bit hippy, or stick to the Hepburn look. There are a few trends I advise my clients to avoid when they are 40+. One of my mantras is “if you wore it first time round, don’t wear it now”. The eighties look suits our daughters – we just look like Charlie’s Angels gone wrong! Another one to approach carefully is lace. Pretty, flimsy lacy pieces are everywhere. I adore lace but I only allow myself the tiniest touch so I don’t end up looking too girlish. Nothing will make you look more refreshed than a new haircut and updated makeup. If you’ve been wearing the same makeup for over five years, you need to update your look. Your skincare needs boosting at this age with masses of exfoliation and hydration to give you a healthy glow. Choosing the right colours can be a challenge so ask for help – either in-store or pop along to one of my fun tutorials (see the What’s On section). Have a wonderful spring and I’ll see you again in the summer with tips for holiday packing. . Michèle x I am Michele Duke, an independent style and beauty consultant based in St Leonards. DENTURE WEARERS
If you provide unpaid support to a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems, you are a carer. You might feel that you’re doing what anyone else would in your situation; looking after your mum, son, or best friend and just getting on with it. Care for the Carers is here to support you in your caring role. As part of our programme of empowering carers we are running the Carers Toolkit programme, designed by carers, for carers. Sessions are free to carers and take place across the county. Carers can chose to attend one or a series of training modules on different subjects which aim to equip them with skills and information on a wide range of caring issues. The new Toolkit programme will run from May 2016. Following from feedback from carers that have taken part in this year’s toolkit session, we are adding some new and exciting topics as well as re-running popular sessions such as Mindfulness, First Aid and Money Matters. Full information on the topics, venues, dates and times will follow soon, in the meantime please contact Hazel at Care for the Carers for further information:

Each year, we look after hundreds of local children with life-shortening conditions, their siblings and families, both in their own homes and at the hospice itself, giving them the chance to live life to the full – for as much time as they have together. But, it’s not enough. Because for every child with a life-shortening condition we care for in East Sussex, there is another with their hands up, waiting for our help. It currently costs well over £3.5m each year to provide all of our care services. Families are never charged for this and less than 7 pence in every pound is funded by central government, so we rely heavily on the generosity, help and support of the people of Sussex. Here in East Sussex our goal is to double the number of children that we are caring for in the area.To do that we need to raise more money and awareness and we need local people like you to put your Hands Up! and say “Yes! I’ll help these children.” The care that we offer to children and families in their own homes allows parents and carers to take a well-earned break from the round-the-clock responsibilities of caring for a sick child. This might mean a few hours uninterrupted sleep, a warm bath, or time to spend with their other children. We also offer support to the entire family following diagnosis and through the whole disease process. From advice and information through to play therapy and counselling, our community nurses are there with a helping hand whenever and wherever it is needed. And, when the time comes, our team are there to support the whole family with specialist medical care and bereavement support at the end of the child’s life, giving them the opportunity to say goodbye in their own time and way, wherever that might be.
Our care really is invaluable to the families we look after so please put your Hands Up! and help raise vital funds today. Together we can make every day count – the good days, the bad days and the last days.
