The

Reading Corner Whether it's a bedtime treat or a bit of afternoon quiet time, reading with your children can be a wonderful way to bond with them. It encourages discussion, building language skills, helps their development and concentration, but most of all, it's fun! We've reviewed a couple of new releases from children's publisher Maverick this month, and we also have a collection of the charming "ever so" books to give away to one lucky reader! We sat down with Lily (9) and Peggy (4) to try these new stories out. Not Enough for Queen Fluff, by Rachel Lyon and illustrated by Catalina Echeverri. This book is about a VERY posh rabbit who has a lesson to learn about the value of friendship. Lily loved reading out the rhymes "They were a lot of fun to say out loud." she tells us and both the girls enjoyed spotting all the little details in the illustrations. "I'd like to be a queen rabbit" says Peggy, "but only if I had lots of rabbit friends." George and the New Craze by Alice Hemming and Lily (left) and Peggy (right) illustrated by Kimberley Scott. George the giraffe and all of his animal friends have got a new hobby, but they need to learn a little bit about how to share. Peggy thought it was very funny to see animals collecting cards with people on them. As well as making the girls chuckle, it also sparked off a very sincere chat between them about the benefits of sharing with your friends. "It's very kind to share and your friends will like you more if you do it." advises Peggy.

WIN a complete set of "Ever-so" stories with our fantastic reader giveaway! Bossy, Greedy, Loud, Vain, Nosey, the stars of the ever-so books are no shrinking violets! Created by Julie Fulton and set in the crazy town of "Hamilton Shady", this range of rhyming picture books are ridiculous and fun, guaranteed to entertain your little ones. They'll also teach them a thing or two about the perils of bad habits! We've got a full set of five ever-so books to give away this month. Johnathan Fossy, Mrs MacCready, Daniel O'Dowd, Dorothy-Jane and Tabitha Posy will all be winging their way to one lucky reader. All you

have to do is to email us the answer to the following question: What is the name of the town where the "ever so" stories are set ? If you think you know the answer, email us at win@ familybuzz.co.uk, making sure to provide us with an address to send the books to. Answers must reach us by Friday 12th August 2016, and we'll pick a winner at random from all of the correct entries we receive. Good luck !

Ask Alison...

Alison Waterhouse has worked with children with Additional Educational Needs for the past 22 years in both mainstream and the private sector. Initially, she trained as a Special Needs Teacher and has worked in a variety of schools and educational settings. Alison now works as an Independent Educational Consultant for Special Educational Needs and Emotional Well being in both the Independent sector and mainstream. She is involved in staff training for Young Minds and Releasing Potential and she has an Educational Psychotherapy practice. For more information, please visit www.alisonwaterhouse.co.uk. In her regular “question and answer” page, Alison uses her experience to help readers & their children with educational concerns or problems. If there’s something you’d like to ask Alison, email your question to : alison@familybuzz.co.uk Dear Alison, Our Daughter is just about to move into Year 4. She has struggled with a range of things in school for several years. School was unsure what was going on and so asked for an Educational Psychologist to see her. The Psychologist has diagnosed Dyslexia and this is impacting on her maths. What can we do to help her at home in reading and in maths? Thank you for your email. Many children who have a diagnosis of dyslexia can struggle with maths as well. This is because of the strands/difficulties that make up dyslexia can impact on maths. A child with dyslexia may have difficulties with working memory – this is like a note book in the brain that holds information for a short time while you work on another part of the problem. For instance when you add 45 and 36, you would probably add the 5 and 6 first and make 11. This then has to be stored while you add the 40 and 30 together to make 70. You would then add the 70 and the – now what was the other number I was supposed to remember? Children with Dyslexia may also have difficulties with visual perception and recognising shapes of letters and words. Numbers are no different they are a shape that someone has decided represent a number. The other area that children often have difficulty with is concept of number – what does 10 look like? If you have a picture of 10 in your mind’s eye then you can compare 5 with this and know that the 5 is smaller. If you don’t have a concept of a number you are not able to compare or relate with another number. When we teach children to read we work on sight vocabulary – the most often used words in reading and phonics – how to decode words from the sounds they are made up of and how to use those ‘sound pictures’ letter or letters that represent a sound to create the word on paper. You can support your daughter by working on sight vocabulary by making games with the words. You can make bingo cards, flashcards, hide the words and find them and then read them, write them with bath crayons or on post it notes and then put them on the floor to jump on and read. Supporting her with maths is similar. The first thing she needs to know is the concept – what does * (1 object) look like, what does ** two objects look like can she then join the number of objects with the written symbol for that number? * 1, ** 2, *** 3, etc

6

The next part of the maths that you can help her with is learning her number bonds to 10. Number bonds are the numbers that when added together make 10. 2+8=10, 4+6=10 etc. Make cards with numbers on and then play pairs. Put numbers and dots on cards and then pair them together to make 10. If she can do this move to numbers that go together to make 20. There are lots of games on line to have a look at and play together. Try and do 10 min a day on maths and 10 minutes a day on word games, you will find then that as you are having fun and enjoying it together the learning will happen. Dear Alison, Our son is in Year 4 and has high levels of anxiety related to school. He will often say he doesn’t like school, will have a range of ailments including tummy ache, headaches and generally feeling poorly and says he can’t go to school. My husband thinks these are all made up to get out of school. What can I do? Firstly the symptoms your son is experiencing are real, his tummy does hurt, he has got a headache. We know that stress and anxiety can cause pain within the body because the mind and body are linked. The cause is not a cold or a tummy bug but anxiety and or stress about having to manage something that your son doesn’t feel able to or confident in managing. It is really important that you take your son seriously and help him talk about what he is finding tricky at school. Is it the work, the friendships, his relationships with his teachers or is it the fact that he is not with you or his Dad. For some children separating from parents can cause them to become stressed or anxious. If you give him the chance to talk and you listen then he may be able to tell you what he is feeling and why. At this point it is really important not to solve the problem or tell him how he could think or deal with it. Just listen to him and acknowledge what he is saying to you. They are his feelings and thoughts and so are very real to him. Once he has shared things with you then it is time to write them all down and start to think about them together. Ask which one he would like to tackle first, which would make life better for him most quickly? Then explore ways of solving the problem. For example if it was: ‘I hate maths, I can’t do it and Miss keeps shouting at me’ Brainstorm all the ways you could deal with this. If it is appropriate you can add the silly things too.’ Write to the Prime Minister and get him to ban maths in all schools for ever.’ If you can add the silly things

to the sensible ones it allows you to have fun but also help him think in a creative way. You might then opt to talk to the class teacher and work on addition at home as the solution to follow up first. By working with your son in this way he will get to understand the process of problem solving – which he will need as a life skill in the future. Your sons class teacher may be able to support you in understanding what is going on with your son in school and by talking to her you may be able to work together to support him manage the things he is struggling with. When anxiety takes over and children start refusing to go to school on a regular basis then a range of support will be needed and a team approach can often be the best way forward. Once you know what the problem is in your sons mind then you can support him, tackle and solve it together

What is Educational Psychotherapy? For parents whose children are struggling at school, stuck in their learning, anxious or depressed, who have stopped thriving or are acting out, life can become overwhelming, full of worry and confusion as they try to find help for their children. Educational Psychotherapy is a powerful approach to addressing these issues. It is a way of meeting the child’s individual learning needs, which in turn positively affects their ability to cope within the classroom. Educational Psychotherapy is a way of working with children which combines teaching with therapeutic exploration of the emotional factors triggered by learning. It is recommended for children and young people who have become ‘stuck’ due to complex emotional barriers to learning and development. Barriers to learning and development may manifest themselves as: •

Poor attitudes to learning based on attachment patterns,

My daughter is in Year 4 and has a provision map to show the support that she is getting at school for literacy and maths. Each term we get sent one however we never get to talk to anyone about how it has gone or whether the targets have been met. What should we do?

Failure to learn,

Withdrawal,

Difficult behaviour,

Difficulty with social interactions and friendships,

Violence or aggressive outbursts,

A lot of schools use provision maps to help show parents what support they have in place for their child and what targets they are working towards. The reasoning behind the provision maps is very good, as it enables parents to know what is being done for their child and allows them to support school by working on these things as well. Provision Maps also show you who will be undertaking the support, for how long and on how many occasions per week.

Physical symptoms,

Anxiety,

Difficulties with transitions,

Restlessness and an inability to focus,

Dear Alison,

Provision map targets should be SMART This stands for S= Specific, M=Measurable, A=Agreed upon, R=Realistic, T=Time Based. For instance a target might say: To improve sight vocabulary words by 5 words each week. This will be undertaken by Mrs Smith three times a week for 10 minutes each time. This is a much clearer way of sharing support than: To improve reading. Targets on provision maps are often written by the SENCo in consultation with the class teacher and so you could talk about them at parent consultations or in a specially arranged meeting with either the class teacher or the SENCo. At the end of the term the Provision Maps are reviewed and then discussed before a new one is written if support is still needed. You should be given an update either at the end of the term or when you get the new provision map. If you want to know more then I am sure school would want to meet you. Ask the class teacher who is best to talk to, them or the SENCo.

An inability to make good use of the learning environment or the teacher. Educational Psychotherapy produces real benefits in children’s emotional well being and their capacity to learn and engage with schools. By helping children and young people overcome these emotional barriers to learning, their self esteem, resilience and skills for learning are strengthened and engagement, positive relationships and sense of well being are promoted. Childcare

Choosing the right childcare provider for your child can be a daunting task for parents, so to help out parents taking this step for the first time, here are some tips and hints: It's always a good idea to visit several child care providers, at each one, look for: • Trained and experienced staff, they should be ready to learn and respond to the individual needs of your child. • Children who seem happy and purposeful, busy and engaged but comfortable in their surroundings. • Safe and clean premises that offer a warm welcome. • Planned and organised activities While visiting a child care provider you should ask questions to make sure you're making an informed choice. Questions to consider are: • What qualifications do the staff have? • What is the ratio of staff to children and how many children attend each day? • Are food and nappies provided for the children? • How is the children's behaviour managed, is there a policy for discipline? • Does each child have a key worker (one member

of staff who has main responsibility for each child)? As well as asking questions of the child care provider, it's also worth talking to other parents. They will have first hand experience of using the services on offer and will be able to offer first hand experience of what you can expect. Before, during and after choosing a child care provider, communication is key. Being able to comfortably discuss your child's care with the caregivers is imperative, even more so in the time before your child learns to speak for him/herself. Hopefully these suggestions, along with checking the child care provider's Ofsted report at www.ofsted.gov. uk, will help you find the right place for your child to thrive!
