elcome to the March edition of Golden Times. We're back brimming with ideas for things to do and places to go as we say goodbye to winter and wish a warm welcome to the springtime! Our regular columnists are on-hand to provide inspiration and information in equal measure. I'm really pleased to mention that we have some readersubmitted photographs on page 12, in what I hope will become a regular feature. Whilst on that subject, this month's cover photo features the ancient and beautiful Pevensey Castle. I took this shot during some warm autumn sunshine, whilst delivering the September edition of Golden Times. Thanks go to all of our wonderful advertisers for supporting us, I do hope you all enjoy the magazine - Jason.

Frank’s Travels - Touring the Pacific It is 5 years now since I started writing my travel column for Golden Times magazine. During that time I have received so many positive comments that, for the benefit of those readers who may have missed the stories first time round, I have decided to relive my travels across the Pacific. My Pacific journey was a 65th birthday present to myself and kicked-off 15 years ago, so I'm sure you will forgive any memory or geographical lapses. As the new year of 2001 dawned, the itch in my feet was starting to get completely out of control. It seemed that every newspaper or magazine I read was full of advertisements for sun-soaked holidays in faraway places, and as I was retired and just doing voluntary work I had nothing nailing my butt to a desk so eventually the temptation became too strong. By February my feeble resistance had completely dissipated and I found myself spreading a large scale map of the world on my bedroom floor, and just staring at it. As I looked at where I might venture off to my mind wandered back to my days in the army when, compliments of the British taxpayer, I had seen service in a huge chunk of real-estate stretching from Zambia, and Kenya, through the Gulf states then Malaysia, Borneo, and Australia, and that's when a bell rang in my head. "PACIFIC" Yes indeed, there staring me in the face was an area of the planet completely undiscovered by this intrepid explorer! Time to start getting serious. As we all know, the longest journey begins with the first step, and step no.1 for me was to start working on an outline itinerary with a start, and finish point. Heathrow Airport in London seemed like a good idea for start, and finish so now all I had to do was develop an interesting route. As I studied the map the Hawaiian Island of Maui with it's capital of Honolulu, and Pearl Harbour kept catching my
4
eye so I decided that this spot would be ideal for kick-starting a journey across the Pacific to New Zealand via as many Islands as I could fit in. Step 2 found me on the 'phone to a reputable travel agency based in London, and it turned out to be my lucky day as the young woman who answered my call was the answer to a prospective traveler's prayer. I gave her a very loose idea of my proposed itinerary, and assured her of my flexibility as far as departures etc; were concerned. Having asked me a number of pertinent questions she then told me she would ring me back in an hour which she duly did. I had made her job a little easier by not requesting prebooked accommodation so what she came up with was a "Round the World" flexi ticket which would enable me to use Air New Zealand like a hop-on hop-off bus service, brilliant! From Maui all I had to do when I was ready to move on was to phone ANZ at the airport and book myself on the next Island Hopper. I never worry about pre-booking a place to lay my head as all civilized airports have accommodation bureau's which, however small the airport is, will provide a service even in the middle of the night. I booked my flight there and then, and 5 days later I arrived at Heathrow with my weather-beaten backpack and battered bush hat. As my NZ flight took off, and headed into the setting sun I settled down in my seat ready for the long direct haul to Los Angeles where I would change flights and head West for Maui and the beginning of 4 months of interesting , and at times hilariously funny episodes. Roll on Honolulu, and maybe even Fiji?? Until the next time watch how you go, stay healthy, and enjoy living - Frank

Counselling by Julia Meanwell My first experience of therapy was when I was in my twenties but I found that after only a few sessions it just made me even more confused than before. I am sure the counsellor was good enough but I realised that I was just not ready to enter into a therapeutic relationship at that time. I believe we are all a work in progress and that there are certain times in our lives when we are ripe for development. The saying ‘when the pupil is ready, the teacher will appear’ springs to mind and of course the ‘teacher’ may be a life event, person or other potential source for growth and learning. For anyone seeking the help of a counsellor it can be a really daunting prospect especially so if you haven’t any prior experience of being a counselling client. There are just so many approaches to choose from when searching for the one that most suits your current needs. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Transactional Analysis (TA), Psychosynthesis, Psychoanalytical, Psychodynamic and PersonCentred to name but a few. To the uninitiated it can all be rather overwhelming and there are even more approaches that I don’t have room to mention here. I am unable to give you a full description of each one but if you would like information about the different types of therapy then go to www. counselling-directory.org.uk/ or www.bacp.co.uk or

Local counsellor Julia Meanwell, has been in practice for over 20 years, she has a wealth of experience, empathy and understanding to offer clients. Julia began her counselling career as a relationship counsellor with Relate which incorporated working in television and radio. of course, dear old Google! Qualifications in counselling are a notable indication that the therapist has reached a certain level of knowledge and experience. However, it is in no way a guarantee that you will feel safe, heard, understood and not judged. If any one of these fundamental elements of good practice is absent from your therapist then I would recommend moving on to continue your search. Whilst counsellors and psychotherapists are under no legal obligation to become a member of a professional body, membership will mean a member has met certain requirements set by their professional body and must abide by a code of ethics and complaints procedure. If you would like to find out more about the counselling Julia offers then please take a look at her website juliameanwellcounselling.co.uk She can be contacted by email Julia.meanwell@gmail. com or give her a call on 07714 280083.

prepared for you.
Abbeyfield South Downs will mark the movement’s 60th anniversary with a 60-mile sponsored walk – by 60 volunteers. The charity, which provides housing and support for older people, wants to highlight the plight of the lonely with the six-day event from 4 -9 April. Participants will start at Beamsley House in Eastbourne and walk to Abbeyfield Chichester, dropping in at the houses in Alfriston, Hove and Worthing on the way. Abbeyfield South Downs Chief Executive Nolan Taylor said: “Loneliness is devastating – it’s not known how many lonely people are out there, but is clearly a huge problem. “People need company – a kind of ‘family’ around them. If through the Abbeyfield Diamond Jubilee walk we reach one person who is suffering from isolation, it will have been successful.” At the finishing line, the walkers will be greeted by TV star Christopher Timothy – James Herriot in All Creatures Great and Small – whose late mother ‘Timmy’ lived at Abbeyfield South Downs in St Leonards. Mr Taylor said: “Timmy was very popular and Christopher visited her at our St Leonards house regularly. We are delighted he has stayed in touch since his mother’s death and is helping us in this way. “Money raised from sponsorship of the walk will fund residents’ activities at houses along the route.” On Monday 4 April the walkers will go from Eastbourne to Alfriston, on 5 April, Alfriston to Southease, on 6 April, Southease to Hove on 7 April, Hove to Worthing; on 8 April, Worthing to Middleton-on-Sea, and on Saturday, 9 April from Middleton-on-Sea to Chichester, where walkers will attend a blessing at the cathedral. LATER LIFE FINANCIAL PLANNING - INCOME IN RETIREMENT This year I have produced a number of articles relating to the provision of later life care and the all-important funding of care, whether in your own home or in a care home environment. In this article I am going to cover the issue of ‘Income in Retirement’. We have now entered the 8th year of record low interest rates since the Banking Crisis of 2008. The UK’s retired community has been the hardest hit with so many relying on savings interest to boost their retirement income. The increase in the cost of living for the retired community is often much greater than for those people still at work and many retired folk will be locked into non – increasing pension annuities. The Bank of England has indicated that interest rates will eventually increase but has not so far offered any indication that this will be any time soon. So how can we give ourselves an ‘income pay rise’? At Ethos Financial Planners we spend a lot of our time assisting clients who need to make their capital work harder in terms of income generation. Many of our retired and soon to be retired clients will naturally be somewhat cautious in terms of the level of risk that they are prepared to accept in terms of their capital. We have identified moderate risk rated, regulated Investment Funds that currently offer regular income in the region of 4% pa gross with the prospect of longer term capital growth. The Investment Funds will be able to generate tax exempt income if held in an ISA or if your total investment income in the 2016/17 tax year does not exceed £5,000. I would emphasise that the value of capital invested and the income generated may rise or fall in value in line with market conditions. For further information or an initial discussion, free of charge, please call me on 01293 223401.

Top left is Ashley Hemsley's photograph of the sun rising at low tide on Eastbourne beach. Definitely worth getting out of bed to capture such a great shot. Next is a shot of the South Downs in the mist, taken by Robin Levett from Pevensey. A stunning combination of cloud & mist taken North West of Lewes. Many of you will recognise the iconic silhouette of Bexhill's seafront in the delightfully atmospheric sunset shot sent in by Linda McCann who has recently moved to Bexhill. At the bottom of the page is another shot from Ashley Hemsley who has used multiple exposures to capture a wonderfully ethereal photograph of Seaford Needle from the clifftops. In the background of the page, I've included a shot I took of Rock-a-Nore beach taking a battering from Storm Imogen. Thank you to all of our contributors, I look forward to sharing more images in future issues - Jason
If you're a keen photographer and would be interested in seeing some of your work featured in Golden Times, please get in touch. I'd love to make "Scenic Sussex" a regular feature of the magazine. You can email your images to me at : jason@goldentimes.co.uk, happy snapping!

Don’t take your eyesight for granted, it’s a precious asset Both cataracts and glaucoma are common, and potentially devastating eye diseases, so with World Glaucoma Week in March, we look at the differences between the two conditions, what signs to look out for and what to do if you suspect you may have either one. Glaucoma and cataracts – what are the differences? Both diseases are a natural part of the ageing process and both can cause permanent loss of eyesight, but they are distinctly different: • Cataracts – a cataract is a naturallyoccurring clouding of the eye, that blocks or changes the entry of light into the eye. The lens of the eye is made up of protein, but the ageing process causes the protein to clump and this prevents light from passing through clearly. New cells form on the outside of the lens, but the old cells are pushed into the centre, which forms the cataract. Common symptoms include: cloudy or foggy vision, even when wearing glasses; problems with glare during the day and sensitivity to lights at night, e.g. oncoming headlights; deteriorating colour vision, with everything appearing tinted yellow or brown; and double vision. • Glaucoma – refers to a condition where damage is caused to the optic nerve due to changes in the pressure on the inside of the eye, or because of a weakness in the optic nerve. Increased pressure can damage the optic nerve quickly, whilst

lowered pressure would cause the damage much more slowly, with gradual deterioration in sight. Glaucoma is harder to detect, but symptoms include: tunnel vision – like looking through a tube; temporary or permanent vision loss; pain or redness in the eye; or even nausea or vomiting. What treatments are available? For glaucoma sufferers, it is not possible to cure any damage caused to the optic nerve, but if caught in time there are treatments that can ensure that damage does not cause complete sight loss. These range from eye drops, which are used to lower the fluid pressure in the eye, through to laser surgery giving the same effect. Cataracts are less likely to cause permanent loss of sight, but early diagnosis and treatment can help to ensure that normal, or improved, sight can be restored. Treatment usually involves a small operation to remove the cloudy lens and replacement with a plastic lens. Benenden Hospital is established as a Centre of Excellence for cataract surgery and performed over 1,700 operations last year alone. The Unit recently expanded their overall ophthalmic service to include glaucoma treatment to private patients using up-to-date specialist equipment to detect increased eye pressure. For more information about the ophthalmic services provided by Benenden Hospital, please telephone 01580 242 521, or visit www.benendenhospital.org.uk 8478 Q315-Joints-GoldenTimes-SepOct-FP.indd 1

Mirror mirror on the wall...
Have you looked in your mirror lately? Are you happy with what you see? What are your thoughts? Quite frankly, as far as I am concerned, the least time I can spend looking at myself the better! I don’t much like photos of me either. However, one morning I had a different train of thought. When I looked in the mirror I could certainly see life’s experiences in lines that were not there a few years’ ago. I also understand the ageing process, but, in one way, it was a bit of a shock. This is because inside I still feel relatively young. I still like exploring new things, none more so than within my profession teaching Alexander’s discoveries. I started taking Alexander lessons around thirty years’ ago as a means of getting rid of my chronic back problem. In the intervening
years, and with my Sciatica under control, I trained as an Alexander teacher and, over the years, my joy with the work has been the continual learning and exploring that has enriched my life. The day I think I know it all will probably be the day I give up I love this quote, from the Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist Viktor E. Frankl. Although he was not specifically talking about the Alexander Technique, it sums up what we explore with Alexander work. “Between the stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom” These are good tools to use in everyday living. By being aware, pausing and choosing something

different we can change harmful habits, which can lead to problems with stress, tension and pain. This is particularly important the older we get. One of my passions with the Alexander Technique is how it can help maintain mobility in later years. So perhaps we should look at getting older as a gift! I teach the principles of the Alexander Technique both individually and in groups (maximum of six people). AGEING by Michele Duke Few of us like getting older, but it’s better than the alternative! Statistics show that most of us who survive to sixty will live till we’re ninety. Unfortunately our skin is designed to only last for about forty years. So how can we keep it looking great for another fifty? A daily skincare routine is a must. If you’re still using the same products at sixty that you were at forty, you’re missing a trick. Nothing can get rid of a wrinkle once it’s there, but great products can reduce the appearance of lines and help prevent new ones forming. The most effective is Retinol. This is a naturally occurring vitamin which can penetrate the skin and stimulate new cell formation. This means you get new, younger skin coming to the surface of your face and neck. Clever, eh? Choose carefully as these products can be expensive and some are more effective than others. And be patient. It can take six months to see the results. Exfoliate, moisturise and cleanse. These three little words should be your mantra - and not just for the ladies! Every day. Morning and night. No excuses. Your skin will love you for it and you’ll really notice the difference. Remember your skin is fed from within so diet and exercise will make an enormous difference. A brisk walk every day will soon have you glowing with
health and vitality. When it comes to make-up for older skins, less is definitely more. Replace your old foundation with light CC creams which not only smooth the complexion but feed your skin at the same time. Unless your skin is oily, which is unusual at this age, chuck away your powder. Allow a little glow to shine through. Avoid heavy lines around the eyes, a bit of smudged kohl pencil is much softer than eye-liner. Heavy lipsticks will “bleed” into any fine lines. I recommend using a lip-pencil all over the lips then applying either a very moisturising lipstick or just a slick of gloss. Always go for the shine. Matte lipsticks are very ageing as are dark colours. Pink, coral or bright poppy red are perfect for the more mature face. A touch of mascara can make a big difference as lashes become paler and thinner, and add colour to faded brows with a little eyeshadow applied with a narrow brush. Most of all remember to smile. No make-up will ever improve a face as much as a smile can. Michèle x I am Michele Duke, an independent style and beauty consultant based in St Leonards. I hold regular FREE demonstrations, workshops and tutorials. Call me for dates and more details on 07801 621310. See my website at www.micheleduke.co.uk.

Tulip Festival at Pashley Manor Gardens Friday 22 April every day until Saturday 7 May, 11am - 5pm In late spring 30,000 tulips create dazzling mantles of colour in every flower bed, pot and border at Pashley. With 108 varieties of tulip on show visitors can enjoy colour themed displays of demure lily flowered and romantic peony flowered blooms, the exotic plumage of parrot tulips, exquisite fringed tulips with edges that seem feathered with frost, the bold, fresh, green stripes of the viridiflora varieties, the cheerful abundance of multi-flowered styles and, of course, the elegantly curved classic tulip shape in many hues. Complemented by forget-me-nots, pansies, bellis and newly emerging perennials, the sheer volume and fantastic colour of the tulip display is mesmerising to the first time and returning visitor alike. Gardening tips for early-mid spring
grass cutting, weeding, clearance, veg plots & allotments
The official start of spring is nearly upon us the snowdrops are showing their heads and crocuses are adding some extra colour. In some places the ground is still very wet, but everything is beginning to awaken from its winter sleep. On the subject of wet ground stay off it as much as possible, treading on it will compact it makin drainage more difficult. If you have to work on wet ground work from a scaffold board or a piece of decking. Make a note of any wet areas you may have and when the weather is more favourable try aerating the soil with a fork or try tining and back filling the holes with sand. Finish planting any bare root shrubs and trees, container grown shrubs can be planted also. Keep one eye to the weather and protect against any hard late frosts. Sow hardy annuals and now is also a good time to feed and mulch borders. Moving into mid spring sow bedding and pot plant seeds, prick out and pot on any that you started earlier. It’s a good idea to stake herbaceous plants now or put growing supports in place before they really begin to take off. Those winter sown sweet peas will be ready to go out, it’s still not too late to sow some now for a summer display. Any shrubs that need spring pruning do so now but only those that require it, otherwise you might cut out new growth.

"Animal Attraction" by Peter Booth
We were putting the world to right at a recent club meeting. We were saying how sad it was when youngsters took to suicide rather than talking personal problems over with parents, carers or one parent's latest lover. I'm 76 but, eons ago, when entering my teens, I did have one psychological probem that I felt I couldn't talk to anyone about particularly my parents. Whenever there was a circus in the vicinity, I ran away from home - to be discovered a day or so later sleeping in the straw of that particular circus's camel tent. Oh, those beautifully gorgeous creatures, with such long eyelashes! After the third time this happened, my mother sat me down in our living room. To save embarrassment, she chose a time when Dad was out working on 'late shift' with the Maidstone & District buses as a conductor. He would not be back home until 11.30pm, having to walk home from his Silverhill depot! "Peter," she asked me. "would you please let me know what this circus camel infatuation is about?" I was at first loath to discuss anything about this subject but, thinking, I realised this was perhaps the one and only time I could talk about my problem with a person I could trust to keep any conversation entirely between ourselves. In following years I realised how lucky I was when choosing a mother! I told Mum I was not sure how to put into words the fact that, whenever I saw a camel, I fell in love without understanding what "falling in love" meant.
"All I know, Mum, is whenever I see such beautiful, wonderfully gorgeous creatures, I get weak all over. At those times, nothing in the world is more important to me." Mum looked at me for long minutes. "Peter," she finally said."I'm glad you have felt able to talk this over with me! Many a boy would have wrestled with this and tried to sort it out alone." To give herself thinking time, and allow me to put my thoughts into order, she went to our ridiculously narrow kitchen to brew two cups of her ridiculously strong tea. When she returned she placed the teapot between us, and a cup and saucer in front of us each. "Peter, this room, and all the time in the world, are yours. I just want to understand you, and comprehend what your camel problems are." Swilling the teapot about (as her parents had taught her) before pouring two cups of super-brew, she looked me in the eyes: "Right, my Peter... camels eh?" She pushed in front of me an overflowing bowl of sugar cubes. "Mmm - this is so strange to me, not to mention the rest of the family. We would all like to help you and understand you a bit more. Right... Camels!" The sugar bowl was between us. We always preferred cubes to granular. Mum pushed the bowl towards me. "One hump or two?" s If you would like to submit a short story (450-500 words) for inclusion in Golden Times, please email jason@goldentimes.co.uk or post your story to us at: 78 Elphinstone Road, Hastings, East Sussex, TN34 2BS

Wasabi Tuna Burgers - Recipe by Faz Razeen Wasabi originated in Japan, and traditionally it has been used as a natural herb. Now, wasabi is one of a primary condiment for Japanese dishes, especially for soba noodle, sashimi and of course for sushi. Usually, rhizome of wasabi is grated and used as condiment. Freshly grated wasabi is bright green colour, and characterised as sticky texture with fresh scent and hot flavour. This Japanese plant with a thick green root which tastes like strong horseradish and is used in cookery, especially in powder or paste form as an accompaniment to raw fish. Wasabi is a plant of the Brassicaceae family, which includes cabbages, horseradish, and mustard. It is also called Japanese horseradish, although horseradish is a different plant.
Ingredients: Serves 4 1 tsp wasabi powder or 1 tsp of wasabi paste (can be purchased at major supermarkets) 4 tuna steaks, if frozen tuna steaks used, ensure thawed. * 1 egg 4 medium red onions thinly sliced 3 tbsp sesame seeds 2 x packs Pak Choi 1 tbsp soy sauce 3/4 tbsp of cooking oil Salt and pepper for seasoning
Note: Only 4 Wasabi Tuna Burgers displayed in the photo out of 8 made from a packet of 4 tuna steaks weighing 400g net of ice glaze *Pack of four tuna steaks can be purchased at a reasonable price from any of the major supermarkets.
Preparation: 1. If you chose to use wasabi powder apply with 2 tablespoons of warm water to make a smooth paste. If wasabi paste is used, mix thoroughly the paste with your hand into the minced tuna and rest of the ingredients. 2. Roughly dice the tuna, then pulse in a food processor until roughly minced. Stir in the finely chopped onions, sesame seeds and wasabi paste or powder and mix well with a beaten egg. 3. Using damp hands, shape the mixture into 8 tuna burgers, if necessary use a pastry cutter to make nice round shape burgers. 4. Heat frying pan on medium heat with oil, add tuna burgers and cook for 5 minutes each side until browned. 5. In the meantime, steam the pak choi for 3 minutes until tender. Dress with soya sauce and serve Wasabi Tuna Burgers. Suggest serve with sweet chilli sauce or hot chilli sauce depending on your taste preference.
