JON RAHM SPEAKS AFTER UNBELIEVABLE WIN AT SENTRY

KAPALUA, Hawaii -- Jon Rahm began the bold new year on the PGA TOUR by coming from seven shots behind to win the Sentry Tournament of Champions on Sunday with plenty of help from Collin Morikawa.

Rahm was six shots behind on the 13th hole at Kapalua when he ran off three straight birdies and a 12-foot eagle putt, and his final birdie gave him a 10-under 63.

Morikawa had gone 67 holes without a bogey on the Plantation Course when it all fell apart with his wedges and his putter, the two areas that had carried him to a six-shot lead at the start of the day.

From 25 yards short of the 14th green, he blasted out of a bunker and over the green. He muffed a wedge from a tight lie with the grain of grass into him on the par5 15th. His wedge to the 16th didn't go far enough and

rolled some 60 feet back into the fairway. Morikawa looked to be in a state of shock as he walked down the 17th fairway, leading by as many as seven shots during the final round and suddenly finding himself two shots behind and running out of hope.

He wound up tying a PGA TOUR record for losing the largest 54-hole lead at six shots. Seven other players have done that, most recently Dustin Johnson in the fall of 2017 at the HSBC Champions in Shanghai.

Rahm finished at 27-under 265 to win by two shots over Morikawa, who birdied the 18th hole -- his first birdie since No. 6 -- to close with a 72.

It was the second such collapse by Morikawa in a little more than a year. He closed out 2021 at the Hero World Challenge and had a five-shot lead with a chance to reach

No. 1 in the world with a victory. He shot 76 and finished fifth.

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler had a chance to return to No. 1 this week if he finished in a two-way tie for third or better. He had to settle for a 70 and tied for seventh.

It was a small measure of redemption for Rahm, who last year finished at 33-under par at Kapalua which was a PGA TOUR record that lasted only a few seconds. Cameron Smith finished at 34 under to win by one.

Rahm now is 60 under in his last two appearances at Kapalua. The victory was his ninth on the PGA TOUR and 17th worldwide, and assured he will be back on Maui to start 2024.

Rahm now has won three times in his last six starts worldwide -- he won in Spain and Dubai late last year -and he goes home with $4.2 million.

Rahm won $2.7 million from the $15 million purse at Kapalua, the first of the elevated events on the PGA TOUR schedule. He also gets 25 percent of his Player Impact Program bonus money -- he finished No. 5 in the PIP for $6 million.

The Spaniard now has won in each of his seven full years on the PGA TOUR.

Tom Hoge had a 64 and tied for third with Max Homa (66). Hoge headed for the airport to go to Los Angeles to watch his school, TCU, playing for the national championship against Georgia. Hoge then will go back to Hawaii for the Sony Open.

HONOLULU – The talent has never been in question. But for Si Woo Kim, his attitude, and his results, have varied.

“High expectations,” Kim said of his occasional struggles after carding his second straight 64 to reach 18 under par and win the Sony Open in Hawaii by a shot over Hayden Buckley (68).

It was the fourth PGA TOUR victory for Kim, 27, who began three behind the leader Buckley but closed the gap with three straight birdies. Kim finished with two more birdies, including a 28-foot chip-in on 17 just seconds after Buckley had birdied 16, and a two-putt birdie on 18, where he chased his second shot onto the green with a 5-iron from a fairway bunker.

Chris Kirk (68) finished alone in third, three back. Kim is not the same guy whose third and most recent victory before Sunday came at The American Express in 2021. For one thing, he got married last month. For another, he joined forces with a new caddie, Manny Villegas, brother of Camilo, at the Presidents Cup last

fall.

Kim and Villegas talk a lot about attitude and expectations, because when you’ve won the Korean Junior Championship four years in a row, won again as a PGA TOUR rookie (2016 Wyndham Championship), and lapped the field at the 2017 PLAYERS Championship (at just 21) it can seem like your birthright to win every week.

Kim was No. 1 in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green at Waialae, which was on brand. That he was only a pedestrian 38th in Strokes Gained: Putting turned out not to matter. He held his own on the greens, and made the ones that mattered.

“You get that many 12- 15- 18-footers in one day,” Villegas said, “it makes you feel like, Man, I’ve missed six of them, but you’re not going to make them all. And he’s good from long range, too; every now and then he’ll throw a bomb in there.”

He’s also sneaky funny, say friends and colleagues. Kim was quick to make fun of himself after he made a TOUR-

record 13 at the watery 11th hole at TPC Southwind in 2021.

There’s one other important thing about him, Villegas added.

“He’s very good under pressure,” the caddie said.

Adam Scott (67, T21) said the same thing about his Presidents Cup teammate.

“There's a lot to Si Woo as a golfer, especially on the inside,” Scott said as Kim battled on the back nine. “I think when he's in a position like this, the fire burns hot, and he’s going to be hard to beat if he’s in the lead I would say.”

Kim admitted he got ahead of himself after his threebirdie start, and what Villegas called his best shot of the day, his 220-yard tee shot at the par-3 fourth hole, to a back-right pin with the wind coming in off the right. The ball stopped 4 feet, 2 inches from the pin, but Kim

missed the putt and bogeyed the sixth and eighth holes. He birdied seven and nine to negate the damage, then settled down on the back, going bogey free as pulled even with and then ahead of Buckley. It can be hard to turn him away once Kim gets a whiff of winning. Still, his confidence remains a work in progress. “Yeah, my dad keep talk to me: ‘You’re not the top player, so don't try to act like top player,’” he said, eliciting laughter and not a little bewilderment. “Yeah. If I play Rory, J.T., all the good players, sometimes I play with them, (I’m) like what I’m doing here, they’re so good, driving like 360, and I’m like 60 yards behind. He may think he still has a long way to go, and maybe he really does, but Kim reminded again at the Sony that when he’s on his game, he’s as good as anyone, and he’s got another trophy to prove it.

LA QUINTA, Calif. -- Jon Rahm took advantage of mistakes by rookie Davis Thompson over the adventuresome final three holes and closed with a 4-under 68 to win The American Express by one stroke on Sunday, his second PGA TOUR win in as many starts this year.

The Spanish star pumped his right fist and flashed a look of relief after tapping in for a two-putt par on No. 18. They were tied with three holes to play when Thompson, who led through 36 holes and shared the lead with Rahm going into Sunday, pulled his drive into a deep fairway bunker on the par-5 16th and wound up with par. Rahm made birdie to take the lead.

Thompson's drive found the fairway but his approach bounced on the green and ran down the slope behind it. The rookie hit a bold flop shop that settled a foot to the right of the hole. He shot 69.

Rahm opened with two birdies to take the lead, but Thompson eventually caught up to him when Rahm's par putt lipped out on No. 13.

Rahm got his share of breaks. From the middle of the fairway on the 16th, Rahm had his hands on his hips as he watched his second shot head toward the deep bunker down the left side. It hit in the dormant rough and stayed in the fairway. That left a pitch to just inside 10 feet, and his birdie putt for the lead swirled into the cup.

Rahm now has won four of his last six starts -- he won the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii to start the year, and he won twice on the DP World Tour at the end of last year. This was his seventh straight top 10 worldwide, a streak that began after the TOUR Championship in late August.

Xander Schauffele, two weeks after he withdrew because of back pain, closed with a 62 and finished two behind with Chris Kirk (64).

Taylor Montgomery was challenging Rahm and Thompson until he put his tee shot into the water on the 17th. He closed with a 66 and finished fifth.

Scottie Scheffler closed with a 67 and tied for 11th. He narrowly missed a birdie putt on the final hole that would have allowed him to return to No. 1 in the world by a fraction of a point over McIlroy.

MAX HOMA ERASES FIVE-SHOT DEFICIT TO WIN FARMERS INSURANCE OPEN

SAN DIEGO -- Southern California native Max Homa came from five shots off the lead to win the Farmers Insurance Open by two strokes over Keegan Bradley on Saturday at Torrey Pines, Homa reeled in Sam Ryder, who was trying for a wire-towire win, and then held off Bradley and Collin Morikawa for his sixth PGA TOUR win and fourth in his home state. He took The Genesis Invitational at Riviera in 2021 and has won the Fortinet Championship in Napa in consecutive years.

Homa closed with a 6-under 66 to finish at 13-under 275. He made a 4-foot birdie putt on No. 18 and pumped his right fist before greeting wife Lacey and infant son Cam just off the green.

Bradley also shot a 66 on the South Course. Morikawa shot 69 and finished at 10 under. Ryder shot 75, his worst round of the week, and tied for fourth with Sahith Theegala (70) and Sungjae Im (70) at 9 under.

Rahm shot a 74, his worst round of the week, and tied for seventh at 8 under with Jason Day (68), a two-time Farmers winner. Rahm got his first PGA TOUR win here in 2017 and then won the U.S. Open in 2021 at the municipal course that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Rahm won The American Express at PGA West last weekend and at the Sentry Tournament of Champions three weekends ago at Kapalua.

Homa, playing in the group ahead of Ryder, Rahm and Tony Finau, took the lead at 12 under by curling in a 16-foot birdie putt on the par-3 16th after a 226-yard tee shot. Ryder had a double-bogey 6 on the 15th to drop to 10 under.

Ryder, who eagled his first hole of the tournament, was in a three-way tie for first after the opening round and had sole possession of the lead after the second and third rounds.

70th PGA Show Closes and Signals a Big Year Ahead for Golf

Golf’s longest running and largest global gathering reunites the industry and drives business, Jan. 24-27, in Orlando

ORLANDO, Florida (January 29, 2023) – Nearly 30,000 PGA Professionals, golf leaders, industry executives and retailers from more than 86 countries came together to meet with more than 800 golf companies at the 70th PGA Show in Orlando, Florida, Jan. 24-27, 2023. Following two years of business disruptions by the global pandemic, the PGA Show was a clear sign of a bullish year ahead for the continued growth of the sport and the $84 billion golf industry.

The PGA Show, organized by PGA Golf Exhibitions and the PGA of America, began in the trunks of cars at a winter golf tournament in 1954 and has grown into golf’s longest running and largest global business gathering. Among the tens of thousands of attendees were nearly 7,000 PGA, LPGA and international PGA Professionals and more than 800 media reporting from the annual event.

PGA Show Week officially began with the golf industry’s annual professional demo day, the PGA Show Demo &

Fitting Day, returning to the massive circular range of Orange County National Golf Center (OCN) in Winter Garden, Florida, on Jan. 24. The sunshine-filled, daylong Demo & Fitting Day, produced in partnership by the PGA Show and PGA Magazine, provided important education and product testing of the latest equipment and technology, and opportunities for PGA Professionals to learn from experts in coaching, clubfitting and range operations.

PGA of America President John Lindert and PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh opened the 70th PGA Show on Jan. 25 with welcome remarks to a crowded lobby packed with PGA Professionals and golf buyers ready to take their first step onto the massive Show Floor, full of the newest golf innovations. Following the ceremony, the doors opened to more than 800 companies, from emerging ventures and veteran manufacturers to the games’ most recognizable brands, to create the world’s largest business-to-business golf event. Golf’s top companies

and market-leading brands, along with more than 250 exhibitors new to the PGA Show, introduced thousands of new products and services to drive golf retail in 2023. Callaway Golf’s new Paradym clubs, PING’s G435 clubs and Cobra Golf’s new Aerojet clubs attracted attention, similar to the new Titliest ProV1 and ProV1x golf balls, Scotty Cameron putters and Mizuno ST230 drivers and the Club Car CRU golf cart. Bushnell Wingman and Full Swing KIT launch monitor, among thousands of exciting products were also among products that can positively impact the game experience. Fashion companies such as KJUS, Dunning, Peter Millar, FootJoy, PUMA Golf, Ralph Lauren and some 300 additional apparel and accessory companies introduced their newest collections for Fall 2023.

The 2023 PGA Show also shined a spotlight on new products and talented inventors in the New Product Zone and Inventor’s Spotlight Pavilion. Innovations in the New Product Zone, a one-stop pavilion of the newest golf merchandise, were judged by a panel of award-winning PGA Professionals and golf buyers. The judging panel selected three overall “Best New Product” Award winners – Dotty Green Golf rangefinder, SKONI footwear and the PUTTLINK smart ball.

The Inventors Spotlight pavilion, organized in partnership with the United Inventors Association (UIA), showcased new golf products developed by independent inventors within 53 inventor exhibits. Products were reviewed by UIA experts and top inventions were presented with one of three awards: Best Marketing to Mach One Golf Balls;

Best Innovation to Vippy Golf height-adjustable tees; and the Pinnacle Award – Best in Show to Paradax Golf all-inone cartbag.

A dynamic 2023 PGA Show Floor featured interactive destinations including the PGA Professional Hub where Members could centrally access Association and partner benefits and programming while showcasing PGA Frisco, the new home of the PGA; the Equipment Test Center, sponsored by Clubhouse Events, featured 44 testing bays and a 3,750 square-foot putting green; the Golf Fitness, Wellness & Instruction area; an Adaptive Golf Center; Club Amenities Pavilion and Golf Travel Pavilion. Golf customers have been waiting for the last two years because of COVID-19. Golf-related consumers who participated were excited by the joy of meeting new products, and the producers' passion to consult at least one person for a short period of time was combined. The show was an event where many golf equipment companies were eager to promote their products, especially digital-related products.

The Korean Pavilion, which had been located in a side corner as a Korean public relations center, disappeared, and each company displayed a line that fits the product with major companies, making it more effective in promoting it to consumers.

In particular, while the Korean product line was difficult to achieve with small companies participating in the past, the exhibition attracted a lot of attention to K-Golf by participating in a larger booth with a more sophisticated scale and format.

PLAYING GOLF IN THE WIND

Playing golf becomes for more challenging in windy conditions. I would like to offer some tried and true tips on how to play better in the wind, and enjoy your round of golf more.

The general idea is to accept the conditions, learn to adjust, and take satisfaction in using some of these ideas to preform better during difficult playing conditions. First of all, dress warm, stay loose. Be aware that the standards will change and scores will generally be higher due to the adverse conditions.

I have had the opportunity to ask several PGA Tour players to give their advice on the subject, and here are some pearls of wisdom from the worlds best players. Hidecki Matsuyama and Jasper Parnevic, both shared “Respect the wind and keep it low. Try to swing smooth and don’t

force it. Using less lofted clubs whenever possible will make this easier to accomplish and minimize the wind’s effects.”

Matt Kuchar added, “ learn to use, or ride the wind. The wind is a constant force that can be counted on to influence the shape of your shot.” Several players, including Billy Mayfair, Mark Calcavechia and Ernie Ells said to shorten up on your swing a little, and club up. (lower Loft) Shorten up on the grip to gain more control.” The best thought was from Jon Vegas who said “focus on hitting solid shots and making good contact! the wind doesn’t affect a well struck ball as much as a weak strike.” Better still, get together with your PGA pro for a session and some first hand advise on how you can do better in the wind.

CONTROLLING TRAJECTORY

We often have students ask “how do I control or adjust the trajectory of my golf shots?”

In this event, first I need to know how experienced and skilled the player is ! Can you hit consistent golf shots with standard consistent heights,? Or, is your ball striking inconsistent and the trajectory of the shots at random? If this is the case, just focus on getting better and building a solid routine, swing and game. Worry about trajectory later.

For all players, you have a set of clubs that dictate and create shots of progressively higher or lower trajectory, by virtue of the club face angle and shaft length. Keep it simple! Use, and trust your equipment as it is designed! For more accomplished players, we can talk about this further. The over riding thought should be to trust your equipment and club face angle to create the height of the shot, provided you have a consistent swing and setup. Beyond that, you can make a simple adjustment of your ball position, or address your weight distribution at impact.

First of all, the further forward you play the ball in your stance (toward the forward foot ,which adds loft to the club) the higher the ball will fly, and the opposite is true if you play the ball further back in the stance. This is an area to explore if you wish to improve or adjust your ball flight and the character of your shots.

Also, we do not all share the same position or weight shift when striking the ball. Generally the most confident dynamic ball strikers are completely on their forward foot at impact, creating a generally more speed and a lower initial launch angle. Where as less experience players will hit their shots with more of a sweeping motion, with less weight shift to the front foot, producing a weaker, higher, and less dynamic ball flight.

For the most part, every players natural trajectory

tendency will evolve with experience and practice. Recognize your own tendencies, and embrace your unique game. Plan on accounting for your shot characteristics just as you would shot shape or distance. Some players hit the ball low, and some hit it high. If you are dissatisfied and wish to adjust or improve, look into improving weight shift, ball position and timing, and then PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!!! Specifically, If lower is your goal, work on making a more pronounced shit to your forward foot at impact, and position your ball slightly back in the stance from your current position. And the opposite is true if you want to play higher shots. All assumes you have a good understanding of solid fundamentals.

Lastly, I recommend take advantage of the watchful eye and support of a qualified PGA Professional to help you understand and improve in this area. This is likely the best $50 dollars you’ll ever spend if you love the game.

There is one thing I often see when I play with Koreans at golf courses in the United States as well as Korean golf courses. It is 'Gongjin-dahn'. This is the most valuable and expensive supplement prescribed by oriental medicine clinics. It is widely known in Korean society as a herbal medicine that strongly boosts energy, such as strong coffee or monster drinks in the United States. In general, it is to maximize concentration and power by taking one pill before playing. This is actually a widely known prescription as it is described in Guam Heo Jun's Donguibogam. If you look up the prescription in Donguibogam, it is surprisingly simple. There are only four types: Nokyong, Danggwi, Sansuyu, and musk. However, in reality, the basic prescription is prescribed to patients by adding the unique prescriptions of each oriental medicine clinic and oriental medicine doctor, named ○○dan. 공진단에 대하여『동의보감』에는 이렇게 기술되어 있다. ‘장년 기의 남자들은 진기가 허약하기가 쉬우므로 음혈을 보하는 것 이 좋다. 다른 약재들은 약효가 약하여 효과를 보기 어렵다. 하지 만 이 공진단은 몸의 상부에 있는 불기운과 아래에 있는 물기운 을 잘 오르내리게 하여 오장이 스스로 조화되게 한다.’ 또한 마지 막에 이런 표현도 있다. ‘더운 술이나 소금을 넣고 끓인 물과 함 께 복용한다.’ 더운 술은 약효를 몸에 잘 퍼지게 하는 효능이 있 고 소금 물은 어떤 약이든 몸 안에 잘 스며들게 하는 기능을 가 지기 때문이다.

또한 복용하는 용량에 대한 표현으로는 ‘벽오동 씨만 한 크기로 만들어서 하루에 70~100알씩 복용한다’고 기재되어 있다. 이 문 헌을 그대로 따른다면 하루에 27g 이상을 복용해야 하는데 현재 통용되는 공진단 한 알의 크기는 최대 5g 정도이므로 사실 이것 을 5~6알 정도는 복용해야『동의보감』에 있는 공진단 복용 용량 과 일치하게 된다. 그런데 실제로는 하루 1~2알로도 충분히 큰 효과를 볼 수 있다는 것이 필자의 경험이다.

공진단을 복용했을 때 의외로 부작용이 나타나는 사람도 있다. 이런 사람은 한의학적으로 ‘간실증’이 있는 사람이다. 평소에 화 를 잘 내고 옆구리가 당기듯이 아픈 듯한 통증을 보이는 사람
