In spite of the challenges of 2020, we want to do our part to make the new ‘normal’ a transformative one. Thank you for your enthusiasm about the rebranding of Homes+. While the magazine effectively connects home buyers and sellers, it is also meant to inspire! We have enhanced Homes+ for our readers to give ideas for improving life at home or to find out how to get in touch with industry leaders – from new home builders, to home improvement professionals, to the finest real estate agents in Waterloo Region. In this issue, you will find articles that may inspire you to update your kitchen, a couple of recipes to try, and helpful suggestions as families transition back to school. I am especially excited to introduce a new feature: Homes+ KIDS. My 13-year old daughter, Selah, is passionate about the environment. She has written an article to read with your kids, to help measure your carbon footprint and provide simple ideas to reduce it. With the environment in mind, the Homes+ Team is trying to reduce our carbon footprint! Between spending time with family, entertaining and hosting, the kitchen is a space that finds itself in the spotlight. The thought of designing a kitchen can be overwhelming for some, there are so many elements to consider- it is the heart of the home after all!

Whether you are planning a renovation or building a new home, there are a few design elements to consider to create your dream kitchen. MIX MATERIALS By mixing materials, you create visual interest in a room. Most commonly done with reclaimed wood, metals or glass on an island or range hood, the contrast of materials can help to highlight those elements to create feature pieces. Permanent structures are not the only way to add diversity to your kitchen, make sure you look at lighting, backsplash tile, furniture and accessories as ways to infuse visual interest in the space. LAYOUT How your kitchen functions is critical, so layout is everything! Think about how you use the space on a daily basis, if you have someone in your home who enjoys cooking you will want to ensure the sink, fridge and stove are all in close proximity to one another. Factor in adequate prep area, storage space and areas of personal interest- did someone say, coffee bar?! The reality is, having beautiful cabinetry or finishes does not equate to a kitchen that functions well and if the space does not fit your needs, it won’t be somewhere you will enjoy being as much as you could.

LIGHTING Have you ever noticed that kitchen show rooms or kitchens that appear in magazines are really bright? A space that is well lit is attractive to the eye and welcoming to be in. To achieve designer lighting, it is important to have a variety, which includes layering where the light is coming from. Make sure your design includes sufficient natural light, flush or pot lights and pendant lighting to create a layered effect. Lighting is not only welcoming but it also helps to highlight your kitchen finishes, make sure your guests can see all your wonderful design details! APPLIANCES It is no secret that appliances account for a large portion of a kitchen budget, but you may ask yourself- how important are appliances, really? Critical. Appliances impact your cabinetry requirements because if you select a 6-burner stove or a double fridge, your cabinetry design will need to accommodate those elements. I remind my clients

that appliances are the very thing in your kitchen that get the most traffic, so you want them to be reflective of your family’s needs. CABINET HEIGHT This is probably my favourite secret- bring your cabinetry to the ceiling! Unless your kitchen has vaulted ceilings, bringing your cabinets to the ceiling is the easiest way to make your ceilings feel taller and to achieve a designer look. Besides‌ who really wants to dust above the cabinets, anyways? No matter what your budget is or the footprint of your kitchen, the same techniques can be applied any kitchen to achieve your dream space. Happy designing! 23

NUTRITIOUS & DELICIOUS POWER BOWLS Looking for a healthy, quick and extremely flavorful meal option? With a little preparation whipping up a nutritious power bowl is fun and easy! Use an hour or two to cook a variety of healthy ingredients that can be refrigerated and the options are endless. Bowls are such a great solution for busy evenings or a quick packed lunch.

1 ~ ROAST VEGGIES

On large sheet pans roast veggies for 30-40 minutes at 400 degrees F. Your can line pans with parchment paper, and spray or drizzle avocado oil or your favourite cooking oil to coat vegetables. Use salt and pepper to season your veggies or any preferred cooking spices. Cooking time will vary depending on the vegetable. (Sweet potatoes generally take the full 40 minutes) Check your veggies midway to gauge cooking time and flip for even cooking. Once veggies are cooked & cooled, place into airtight containers and store in the fridge for 3-4 days. Options Include; Chopped Sweet Potatoes Cauliflower or Broccoli cut into florets Red Onion Red or Yellow Peppers Brussels Sprouts

Prepare your favorite grains according to package directions to have refrigerated and ready to add to your bowls. Healthy options include Quinoa Brown rice Soba noodles

Precook fresh chicken or turkey. Bake or grill salmon or your favorite fish. Boil eggs, and refrigerate. Frozen shrimp can be added to bowls immediately before assembly when cooking time is an option.


School Safe Granola Bars These nut free granola bars are great tasting and healthy. Made with hemp, chia, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, they will quickly become a family favourite. Plus, they are super easy to make, so you can get the kids to help! INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

1 cup Rice Krispies

• In large bowl combine together, Rice Krispies, dried fruit, seeds and Quick oats.

1/2 cup dried blueberries 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1/2 cup raisins 1/2 cup Quick Oats 1/4 cup hemp seeds 1/4 cup chia seeds 1/4 cup sunflower seeds 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds 1/2 cup Sun butter 1/4 cup honey 1/4 cup brown sugar packed 1/4 cup corn syrup 4 tsp butter

• In saucepan stir together peanut butter, butter, honey, brown sugar and corn syrup. • Heat over low heat until ingredients melted, stirring continually. • Do not boil or it will become hard. • Add peanut butter mix to dry ingredients and stir until well combined. • Press firmly into 8x8 lightly buttered pan. • Refrigerate until set.

Clean and cut veggies and fruits, bake muffins or bars, and prepare meals that can be reheated for quick dinners and packed lunches. Get your kids involved with their lunch prep and they will feel a sense of pride & responsibility. • Bedtime routines are so important. Try to implement steps in your nightly routine that will help kids wind down, and stick to a consistent bedtime. Things will definitely look and feel different for kids as they head back to class. Sticking with regular routines will help them feel a sense of normalcy in every day life. With lots of open communication and support, we can help make their transition back to school a success.

I don’t know about you, but when I open my pantry, I want to have everything I need at a glance. More times than I care to admit, I spend longer than necessary staring blankly at what’s in there, not knowing what’s what. Recently, having a little extra time on my hands, I decided to tackle the task of organizing it once and for all.

Where did I Start? I started by paying a visit to my local Dollar Store. They carry a ton of budget-friendly bins and storage solutions. This allows me to make my pantry pretty and not break the bank. I chose to pick up some clear bins and jars with lids, so when everything is organized, I can easily see what I have available. Once home, I did a quick wash with soap and water to make sure that the containers were safe and ready to fill with goodies (you can never be too safe).

Young people are the future! It’s up to us to ensure that the generations before us guarantee a healthy environment for us to grow up in. Eco Investigators challenge you to ask your parents to measure your families carbon footprint and see how much greenhouse gases you’re releasing into the atmosphere. This will allow you to see what areas of your life have the most negative impact to the environment so you can come up with more sustainable solutions! There are many online resources that you can use to measure your carbon footprint. Here are a few you can ask your parents to try out: https://footprint.wwf.org.uk/#/ https://www.carbonfootprint.com/calculator.aspx https://www3.epa.gov/carbon-footprint-calculator/

Carbon Footprint = total amount of greenhouse gases which you emit. Once you know your carbon footprint, your family should make a plan for how you can offset it. We have four simple steps below that you can use to get started, but there are so many more ways you can help if you do a bit of research! • Hang your clothes to dry instead of using a tumble dryer. This saves about 153kg of greenhouse gas and about $83 every year • Only fill the kettle with the amount of water you actually need to boil. This saves about 72kg of greenhouse gas and about $36 every year • Turn down the thermostat. Each degree you turn down saves about 184kg of greenhouse gas and about $66 every year • Take shorter showers. Every minute less saves about 23kg of greenhouse gas and about $13 every year
