Ingredients

1 butternut squash, peeled, seeded, chopped 2 onions chopped 1 acorn squash, peeled, seeded, chopped 1 small pumpkin or 2 16 oz tins pumpkin 5 carrots, peeled and chopped 4 granny smith apples 4 bay leaves 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tbsp curry 1 tbsp celery seed 1 16oz can Diced tomatoes 2 cups white wine 2.5L 12 cups of vegetable stock 1 cup 35% cream salt and pepper to taste

With life getting a little busier, kids going back to school, and shorter days, you can cook this delicious soup a lot faster if using a pressure cooker. Everything is faster, better, and tastier in a pressure cooker. (Can you tell I like pressure cookers)?

Instructions In a large stockpot over med-high heat, combine squash, pumpkin, carrots, onions, bay leaves, spices, wine, tomatoes and vegetable stock. Bring to a gentle boil and keep on a gentle boil for 30 minutes. Reduce heat to medium and add apples. Season with salt and pepper, stirring occasionally and cover and continue to simmer for 1-1/2 hours. Or 30 minutes if using a pressure cooker. Social media is better known for breeding inertia than inspiration, but it was while scrolling lazily through my Instagram feed that I first heard of Sarah Kamya. Kamya, a New York City school counsellor, was back home at her parents’ house in Arlington, Massachusetts when the world shut down last spring. Like many of us, she walked a lot on those quiet days. Passing her neighborhood Little Free Library often, she noticed that the titles in it were lacking in diversity. Same white authors, same old titles. Kamya had a classic lightbulb moment -- what if we could fill Little Free Libraries with books by Black authors? To share Black stories, inspire Black children and give voice to Black experiences? She wasted no time getting organized. Within a few months, she’d raised thousands of dollars, collected hundreds of new books, and filled not only the Little Free Libraries in her neighbourhood, but in all 50 states. Watching Sarah’s Little Free Diverse Libraries project unfold, I thought: Well, we could do that here! In my Midtown neighborhood, there are close to a dozen Little Free Libraries within a few blocks of my house, and many more in Kitchener-Waterloo beyond. It 34

felt like an actionable project I could sink my teeth into -- raising some money, buying some books, and just getting to work. It also felt right. My family and I marched in Downtown Kitchener’s Black Lives Matter protest in the wake of George Floyd’s death last June, and I had been reading and listening to educate myself to know more and do better. But bringing Little Free Diverse Libraries to KW felt like a way to take action, to use my privilege to amplify the voices and centre the experiences of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour who are frequently not heard or appreciated. As an early literacy teacher at a beautifully diverse local elementary school, my heart also leapt at the idea that my students might find a book in a Little Free Library and think, “Hey, that kid looks like me!” I knew the members of this wonderful community would step up, and they have. Some folks have donated money -- about $2,700 to date, just from individuals. Cash has been spent at independent

bookstores -- half in local shops like Wordsworth Books, and half in Black and Indigenous-owned bookstores in Southern Ontario. Other supporters have purchased books through a registry of over 300 titles I set up at Indigo.ca. Around 150 new books have been donated that way. Publishing companies have pitched in to the tune of over 200 brand new books. Indigo’s Kitchener and Waterloo stores each donated a stack of antiracist titles. Friends, neighbours and strangers have mined their own bookshelves, plucking titles by BIPOC authors and dropping them on my front porch. As a result, I’ve been able to get around 600 books into over 150 Little Free Libraries in Kitchener and Waterloo -- fiction and non, books for babies, children, young adults and grown-ups. And I’m not done yet. All books in the KW Little Free Diverse Libraries project are labelled before they’re distributed with

a message that encourages readers to enjoy them but also to return them to a Little Free Library when finished. Also included in the label is a message about every reader’s need for mirror books and window books. Mirror books are those in which we see ourselves, where our lives and experiences feel validated. Window books give us a glimpse into someone else’s world. They deepen empathy and allow us to reflect on what we didn’t previously know. My hope is that readers all over Kitchener and Waterloo are finding mirror and window book joy in Little Free Diverse Libraries. Many people overlook the importance of maintaining a healthy lawn. Not only does your lawn serve as a giant air conditioner by releasing large amount of oxygen into the air, but it also captures a ton of dirt and dust to keep you and your family healthy. It can also be very costly to repair if regular maintenance is not kept up. Here are a few to-do’s that will help your lawn stay healthy ahead of the winter months:

You might be asking yourself, aren’t outdoor and garden the same thing? While the garden is (typically) outside, with outdoor maintenance, we look past the lawn and plants. At Activa, we want your home to be in excellent condition for years to come so a few things to look out for include:

• Pull any weeds you see, making sure to get the root to prevent it from growing back • Once your perennials turn brown, cut back any dead growth to give the plants a fresh start for spring. If you have any new perennials or bulbs you would like to come up in the spring, now is a good time to plant those while the ground is still warm. • Rake fallen leaves, use yard waste bags to store them and remember to put them out on your collection day • Check your potted plants for pests and move them indoors if necessary. If you have any outdoor plants that are sensitive, now is good time to cover them with mulch or cloth. • Keep watering your lawn and plants until the ground freezes

• Check your roof for broken or missing shingles; hire someone to repair if necessary • Clear out and clean your gutters • Store away your patio furniture • Turn off water connections and drain hoses once it gets cold • Check the ground surrounding your home’s foundation and ensure it’s on a slant (this will prevent water accumulation against foundation). If water does not drain away, make sure you install a longer downspout that can direct water away from the home and into the street. • Inspect and test all of your winter equipment (the last thing you want is for a big snowfall to come and suddenly your snowblower doesn’t work… believe us, it’s happened before!)

There are some important things to go through to keep your home safe and comfortable. Let’s start with the maintenance of all your systems: • Clean your furnace filter and your HRV (heat recovery ventilation system) filter

1/4 cup all-purpose flour 3 cups dry red wine (Merlot, Pinot Noir, or Cabernet Sauvignon)

ST EP 1 In a 6-quart enameled cast iron Dutch oven, saute bacon in olive oil over medium heat. Once lightly browned, remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. ST EP 2 Pat the beef dry with paper towels, as it will not brown properly if wet. ST EP 3 Let the bacon fat and oil heat up until very hot, almost smoking. Saute a few pieces of beef at a time in the hot oil and bacon fat until they are evenly browned. ST EP 4 Remove the beef from the pot and set aside on a plate or sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

STE P 5 Brown the onion and carrots in the fat. Drain. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. STE P 6 Return the beef and bacon to the Dutch oven. STE P 7 Sprinkle the beef with flour and stir to evenly coat. Cook for about 5 minutes over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. Lightly brown the flour. STE P 8 Stir in the wine and beef stock so the meat is just barely covered. Add tomato paste, garlic, parsley, basil, thyme, and mustard. Bring to a simmer then cover.

Preheat oven to 350Â°F STE P 2

Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl. STE P 3 S poon into a greased

muffin pan. STE P 3

Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Makes a dozen small rolls.

ST EP 9 Place the pot in the middle of the oven for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, until the meat is tender. During the last 30 minutes of cooking, remove the lid, place the pearl onions and sliced mushrooms over the top of the stew, and put the lid back on. As the stew simmers in your oven, your house will smell amazing. Roast some potatoes, make some noodles or make some easy no yeast dinner rolls (as pictured here) and you have a hearty fall meal that everyone will dig into with gusto!

A copper bucket or copper plated sign are great ways to add this trendy element to your existing fall décor pieces.

Neutrals

Whether it is in fashion or interior design, the resurgence of traditional neutrals is everywhereScandinavian style! The cream, beige and cognac colour palette acts as a natural transition for the season and will establish the foundation for your fall décor. The earthy tones create warmth in both colour and textures.
