Out of nowhere, or perhaps was it was the beginning of a storm? This we do not know. However, while Peter had his eyes on Jesus, He gave Peter the power to actually walk on water! We know as the wind blows across the water, the waves will start getting larger and more frequent, thus making the body of water we are in harder and harder to manage. My friend, listen: such is life! Being a Good Steward MONEY MATTERS

WITH DR. ANDREW LEE Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.

O

n March 18th, just as most of us were starting to “shelter in place” with the coronavirus spreading, I tuned in to the Dave Ramsey radio show. It happened to be during the “Millionaire Theme Hour,” when Dave talks to actual millionaires whose net worth was over one million dollars. One particular story I heard during this episode was unforgettable. Here’s how it started: a forty-seven-year-old man called into the show. What’s his net worth? $12.7 million dollars. How did he acquire this money? In a highly unusual and tragic way. One of his older sisters had died in a horrible house fire, and with the settlement from the subsequent lawsuit, he had received $1 million dollars at age fifteen. His mother and other older sisters put the million dollars into a “Trust” with attorneys and financial advisors managing the money for him. He wouldn’t be able to access the million dollars until he turned twenty-five. During those ten years, from age fifteen until age twenty-five, he received only $200 as a monthly allowance. He turned twenty-five in 1998, and by that time, his $1 million dollars was worth $3 million. How did this happen? The short answer is this: it happened as a result of the love and thoughtful concern of his mother and other sisters who were wise enough to (1) put the money into a Trust so he couldn’t access it until age twenty-five and (2) hire skilled and conscientious attorneys and financial advisors to manage the money for them. During the ten years waiting period between fifteen to twenty-five years old, the trustees invested the money into stock mutual funds, and from time to time they purchased shares in new and growing companies such as Microsoft, Amazon,

10 // May 2020

and Google. The young man’s friends, being normal teens, encouraged him to go on a spending spree for his twentyfifth birthday. “Buy an Italian sports car!” they said. “Buy a boat! Buy a mansion!” But, as he described on air during this live radio show, he felt too guilty since the money was a result of his sister’s horrific death in the fire. So, he didn’t spend any of it, but instead kept it invested. One of his older sisters noticed his anguish and encouraged him to donate that first $1 million dollars to a worthy cause, so he did just that. At age twenty-five, he immediately donated one million dollars to a critical care burn unit at a local hospital in honor of his dead sister. And the remaining $2 million dollars kept growing and growing. Since that first million-dollar donation which was twenty-two years ago, this man has spent nothing else from the money he received in the settlement. But he has continued to make generous donations from that money to hospital burn units across the country, and today the money has grown to nearly $13 million dollars. Today, at age 47, this man makes a fine living earning $170, 000 as a senior-level information technology specialist, and he intends to donate most of his trust money that he received from his sister’s tragic death. He ended his call by breaking down into tears and reminding listeners not to take life for granted and to cherish every moment with loved ones because we have no idea if today may be our last here on earth. Because his family was wise enough to plan ahead, this man will do immeasurable good for countless others with the wealth he was blessed with--a good steward of the Lord. “To whom much is given, much will be required” (Luke 12:48b).

Our Prayer by Jordan Burchette

Dear God, Today we are overwhelmed: overwhelmed with all the unanswered questions, the influx of information, and the many “what ifs.” We are not only overwhelmed with the current situation but the other troubles that didn’t just disappear when the scarier giant popped up. We now have three large giants, two medium giants, and all those pesky small giants staring us in the eyeballs.

(that we will never be able to fully fathom) for a bunch of sinners who run away when things get tough. We fail you greatly, yet you loved us enough to make a way to you through your Son, Jesus Christ. You are the Creator of the universe and know exactly what we need and when we need it. We don’t even know what we need, oftentimes, but you DO. You KNOW. We are not flying through life with no hope as your children. Living

At this point, it kind of feels like a mix between Daniel in the lion’s den AND David standing in the shadow of Goliath. I will be the first to admit that I have had to fall at your feet as my heart trembles more than ever here lately. Psalm 61:2 says, “From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” That is our prayer today in the uncertainty and when these days are past us. God, help us to see that you’re in charge. We don’t have to present the answers or figure everything out on our own. We may have earthly leaders who are in charge, but you’re our ultimate authority. You, Lord, are our Creator and the God of the universe. There is nothing too hard for you. There is nothing “new” to you. There is nothing that takes you by surprise. You know every virus strain that exists, every insect that moves, the number of hairs on our heads, and you have the sand numbered on every shore in the world. You know every human, animal, and cell that exists in

in a sinful world has repercussions, and we all know that in our hearts. However, even in the brokenness, you still shine bright and guide us through every valley and mountaintop. Whether the sun is shining on our faces or not, you’re still shining in our hearts even when we forget that you’re there. How could we fear anything knowing that you, the one TRUE God, have the final say? Help us, Jesus, to trust thee in all seasons. In Jesus’ name, amen!

this universe. Your name is written in the depths of the sea one true God who sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, down to earth to die on a cross and suffer immense anguish

Statistics • The main causes of limb loss are vascular disease (54 percent), trauma (45 percent), and cancer (fewer than 2 percent). • 60 percent of vascular-related amputations are preventable. • Diabetes and vascular disease are the leading causes of limb loss. • There are 2.1 million people living with limb loss in the US, and that number is expected to double by 2050. • More than 54 percent of patients were not assessed via diagnostic angiogram to determine if blood flow could be restored. • The estimated cost to American private and public insurance agencies is $12 billion annually.

A staggering 18 million Americans suffer from PAD, a potentially life-threatening disease where plaque, including calcium, builds up along blood vessel walls, narrowing the arteries and reducing blood flow to the legs and feet, according to the Amputee Coalition, a national organization working to support people with limb loss. Of those suffering from PAD, up to 3.5 million have progressed to critical limb ischemia (CLI), the most severe form of PAD, where the blood vessels become dangerously narrow and can lead to pain when resting, ulcers or sores, and gangrene. If left untreated, PAD/CLI can lead to unnecessary amputation. Limb loss is not uncommon, and sadly, the majority of amputations associated with PAD would be preventable with early detection and treatment. More than 2 million Americans live with limb loss, and that number grows by 185,000 each year. Our goals are to heighten public

The risk for developing PAD rises with age and is highest for those over 50 years old. Smoking, the single greatest risk factor, increases the chance of developing PAD three to five times. But other common risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, and heart disease. The most common symptoms of PAD are leg pain, leg muscle fatigue, coldness or numbness in the lower legs and feet or leg cramps. These are often overlooked because people think their PAD symptoms are a part of the aging process and do not realize they are suffering from the disease. Waiting to talk to a doctor to get the diagnosis and begin treatment may allow the disease to progress to a more severe state. With the new Cleveland facility, VIC providers will be leading the charge in amputation prevention.

awareness about limb loss and increase people’s understanding of prevention—especially those most at risk.

You Are Not Alone by Abdiel Medina

I

remember sitting in a classroom with everyone happily chattering, but I wasn’t happy or chattering. I felt a darkness cover me, and I couldn’t escape it. I felt trapped,

ashamed, bitter, regretful, and worst of all, I felt alone. The enemy had a big grin on his face; this is exactly what he wanted: for me to believe that I was alone and that there was no escape from the hole and darkness that I was trapped in. Satan was attacking powerfully, swiftly; he was determined to devour me. It was at this weak moment in my life that God’s light broke through. God spoke to me to talk to someone; Satan screamed in my ear for me not to; after trial and error of trying to do things alone, I finally chose to listen to the Lord! As I spoke to a person about what happened next, all the darkness and seeds Satan had planted in me were pulled out of my soul. For so long I had felt alone, but as I spoke of the battle I’d struggled in, God opened the doors for restoration and strength to be brought upon my soul. As I cast my burdens upon the Lord, I felt alive and powerful! I shout in joy to the Lord and of His truth! “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of the soul and of the spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). The truth that pierced my soul was that I am not alone. In fact, no one is alone! Satan loves to isolate people, to manipulate and deceive them, to make them feel that there is no hope and that they’re alone. That’s a lie! We are not alone! Here is the truth: God desires us, and not even an infinite universe can separate us from God’s love! Romans 8:38-39 states that: “For am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all

who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” I challenge you to read into God’s word to know the truth so that when Satan lies to you, you don’t become a slave to his lies. For it’s as Jesus said: “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).

creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” God is always by your side (Psalm already accepted His offer (John 1:12), and God is not done with you yet! Philippians 1:6: “And I am sure of this, that he

Gò0dNews for Couples

The Marriage Knot n our American culture, the words “tie the knot” are used in discussion concerning a couple planning for a beautiful marriage ceremony. To “tie the knot” is referencing biblical terms of “They two shall become as one.” With this thought in mind, can we associate each individual planning to marry to a piece of rope? If so, then two pieces of rope shall be used to tie the knot. The two pieces of rope are swirled around in a form, and thus an overhand knot is formed, holding them tightly together. Whatever is attached to the opposite ends of the two ropes is connected at the knot and cannot be separated from each other unless the knot is undone. How soon does the first test of life together challenge the integrity of their marriage knot? How much time was invested in preparation toward tying their marriage knot? Isn’t it God’s intention that the knot never be undone or pulled apart? Isn’t it Satan’s intention to destroy or pull apart every marriage knot ever tied? Who’s responsible for keeping the integrity of the marriage knot safe? Hum? Oh my, how life really can test the integrity of a marriage knot. Through time, you can count on its integrity being tested, time after time after time. As life’s tests come along, it’s the responsibility of both individuals connected by the knot to set boundaries and to protect their marriage knot. Could it be what God hath knotted together, let no man or woman pry apart? Pry? Hum? Be sure of this: that Satan has his tools handy and ready to pry every marriage knot apart if he is given the opportunity. So what are the tools that Satan keeps so handy in his toolbox? Could they be differences concerning finances, in-laws, religion, children, and irresponsibility in keeping the courtship

healthy? How many marriage knots have been undone with these tools? Is he working on yours? Throughout tests of time, your marriage knot will either come apart or cinch tighter and tighter together, becoming undoable. There’s not a marriage that is exempt from life’s testing. Your knot will be tested. The choices that both individuals make concerning their marriage will become the undoing or the tightening of their marriage knot. No one else can make the choices for you. You only can choose the destiny of the integrity of your marriage knot. Rise up; protect and cherish your marriage knot. If it was worth all of the preparation you invested into tying it together, then it is certainly worth the proper protection it deserves. What is the condition of your marriage knot? If it’s not apart yet, there’s hope in the restoration of its integrity. God’s love is awesome in the restoration of marriages. It’s Satan’s business and desire to tear apart your marriage knot. We have the authority to either allow him the opportunity to destroy it or to stop him. I see an elderly couple walking down a beautifully landscaped pathway, hand in hand, toward the end of their lives. Their hair is now grey, and their steps are slow. Their marriage knot withstood the test of time. They protected it well. How beautiful. What will your marriage knot testimony be as you approach your elder years? Will you age gracefully? Will you be the next couple to be seen walking down the beautiful pathway during your elder years? Blessings as you consider these thoughts. Protect your marriage knot.

can enjoy! Lately, I have been really focusing on healthy eating habits and incorporating that into family meals that are both healthy and delicious! This recipe for fish florentine is one of my favorite recipes. I would love for you to try it and it become a favorite of yours too!

Ingredients • 4 - 5oz. thick pieces of skinless white firm fish fillet (I use grouper) • 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 1 Tbsp butter • 1 cup red bell pepper, chopped • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 9 oz. fresh baby spinach • 2 oz. reduced fat cream cheese • ¼ cup half-and-half cream • 3 Tbsp grated parmesan cheese

• In a large skillet, over medium heat, add ½ Tbsp olive oil and ½ Tbsp butter, red bell pepper, and garlic and cook for 4 minutes. • Add spinach, season with salt and pepper; cook until the spinach wilts down. • Add cream cheese, half-and-half, and parmesan cheese; mix well until cream cheese is melted and resembles creamed spinach. • Heat a separate skillet on medium high heat; add remaining oil and butter. • Season fish on both sides with salt and pepper and place on the hot pan. • Cook 6 minutes on first side, flip fish over, and cook on the other side an additional 5 minutes until cooked thru and browned. • Divide the spinach mixture on the bottom of each plate and top with a piece of fish.

• Salt and pepper, to taste

These new regulations, along with consumers reporting various physical and mental benefits, have created a market flooded with new CBD companies, stores, and products even being sold in smoke shops and convenience stores. This market explosion raises legitimate questions. Are all CBD products the same? Are they safe? Which ones can I trust? If you’re curious about CBD, I’ll briefly touch on a few basic facts to help get you started in the right direction. There are 3 major groups of CBD products. “Full-spectrum” (or whole-plant) products contain CBD along with terpenes and other cannabinoids. This group has an advantage known as the “entourage effect,” simply meaning the cannabinoids and terpenes work synergistically for maximum results. Full-spectrum products have a very low (less than 0.3%) THC content with no “intoxicating” effects whatsoever. Still,

Gò0dNews for Everyone

Mother, May I? o you remember the old game from childhood called “Mother, May I”? If not, it’s a game where everyone stands at a certain start line except “mother,” and one at a time, you ask if you can take a specific action to move forward (take three steps or two hops or five baby steps, for example), and “mother” would reply with a yes or a no. I was thinking today that sometimes we treat God’s instructions a little bit like that game. We may read the Bible as a list of mere suggestions for living, and we try to skirt around or disregard those “suggestions” we don’t like. We sometimes even try to reason with God, asking Him to look the other way when we do the things we know we shouldn’t. At best, it’s a poor attempt to try to love God AND the things of the world. At worst, it’s an abuse of the grace that was so costly to our Savior who died in our place. So how should we look at the things that Scripture calls sin? How should we live our everyday lives in the face of such knowledge? I think the answer is in understanding that the reason Scripture tells us to avoid certain things is for our own good! God isn’t a cosmic investigator putting out red tape everywhere, trying to set obstacles and watch us jump hurdles for entertainment. He’s more like a loving parent who sets rules and boundaries in the best interests of the child they love and want to protect! There is such a misunderstanding sometimes that living God’s ways, according to Scripture, is taking a path of deprivation, suffering, and self-denial. The truth is that God’s path leads

50 // May 2020

to joy and peace! There is great reward in a life lived for God in obedience to His commands. I have friends who truly love God but are stuck in a cycle of falling into the same sins over and over again, to disastrous results. One thing these friends have in common is that they don’t see the significant role that these sins have in the causing of or contributing to the problems they keep finding themselves wrapped up in. They downplay sin as if there is no other way to live and are genuinely confused when life is full of trials and heartache. I wish that I could help them see how destructive sin is in our lives. Satan lives to use it to steal from, kill, and destroy us. He hates us, and he wants us as far away from God as he can get us. Sin is his vehicle. Be vigilant, friends! Don’t look at the wisdom of Scripture as a helpful list of “suggestions” for life with an option to live by or ignore. Don’t think of God’s precepts for living as a “May I do this? May I do that?” list of legalistic rules. Don’t make it easy for Satan to attack you and keep you going around in circles. Understand that God’s ways are always higher than our own and that we CAN avoid sin and live by the Word. Gently admonish and encourage fellow believers who are living openly in sin and struggling in life. It isn’t “kind” to let others believe a lie when you know the truth. It’s not always easy to be vigilant about acknowledging sin and its effects, but it is always the best response. Christ already did the hard part for us, the part we couldn’t do, by dying on the cross to defeat sin’s power once and for all. Because of that, we have hope that one day, sin will be completely gone forevermore. And until that day, we fight sin every day. We read the Bible, we study it, and we apply it to our lives. We share the good news with those around us—Jesus is the cure for the sin problem in the world today!
