MEALS FOR VETERANS

Veterans have dedicated their lives to safeguarding America and upholding our security. Yet, sadly, they now find themselves among the most food-insecure residents on Long Island. Right now, your gift to Long Island Cares will be matched up to $100,000 by their board of directors to help provide meals to neighbors facing hunger — including active and former military personnel. The high cost of living puts more and more of our community at risk of hunger — including military families. Often, they lack access to nutritional assistance that could help bring stability back into their lives. Many of our neighbors face unexpected hardships that make it difficult to keep nutritious food on the table for their families. For those like Jacinto, a U.S. Army veteran who recently moved from New Mexico to Long Island, Long Island Cares has provided vital assistance.

You can stand up to support veterans facing hunger on Long Island. After all they’ve done for us, it’s our turn to serve them. Call 631-582-FOOD (3663) for more info.

VICKI PETERSON & JOHN COWSILL AT LIMEHOF

Vicki Peterson (The Bangles) and John Cowsill (The Cowsills, The Beach Boys) will be performing LIVE music at the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall Of Fame (97 Main Street, Stony Brook, NY) on Friday Aug. 9th at 8 p.m.

Vicki Peterson and John Cowsill have been married for 20 years and playing music together for…maybe two. Vicki is a founding member of the 1980’s group The Bangles, one of the most successful bands of that decade. She later wrote and performed with her good friend (and eventual sister-in-law) Susan Cowsill as The Psycho Sisters; the duo soon found themselves absorbed into the New Orleans’ songwriters collective The Continental Drifters and remain with them today.

John began working in clubs, singing and playing drums with his brothers when he was seven years old. The band grew to include their mother and little sister and The Cowsills became a sensation in the late 1960’s, enjoying several Top 20 hits. In 1981 John did some session work, landing on the Tommy Tutone hit, “867-5309 (Jenny)” and recorded and toured with Dwight Twilley. He also toured with Jan and Dean before becoming a mainstay of the Beach Boys touring band, playing guitar, piano, and finally sitting at the drum kit for over 20 years.

A loving tribute featuring songs written by two of John’s brothers, Bill and Barry Cowsill was recently finished by Vicki and John. Long After the Fire is due for release in early 2025.

SPORTS BEAT

The Mets’ roller coaster season seems to be a function of catcher Francisco Alvarez’s health. The team fell apart in early April when Alvarez broke his thumb as he lost his balance heading to second base on a double. As soon as he returned in early June, the Mets miraculously went from eleven games under .500 to equaling the wins and losses ledger after beating the Yankees two straight games in the Subway Series played at Citi Field.

Alvarez was tabbed as a catcher who could hit, but whose defensive skills were suspect. He is as good defensively as he is as a hitter. In addition, Mets pitchers have been praising his pitch call selection.

The unwelcome news for the Mets has been losing two of their best relief pitchers, Brooks Raley and Drew Smith, to season-ending injuries. The timing could not have come at a worse time as closer Edwin Diaz was suspended for ten games because he was accused of using illegal sticky stuff on his hands.

The problem is detecting what is allowable stickiness versus the disallowed variety is a subjective decision made by the game umpiring crew. There is no objective test. Some umps have even allowed pitchers to wash their hands, and then pitch. I asked Mets manager Carlos Mendoza if the subjectivity of enforcement and punishment, which cost him his closer for ten games, should be scrutinized by Major League Baseball. Mendoza sided with the umpiring crew! That’s the equivalent of a tenant in a rent-stabilized apartment siding with the landlord to charge market rates.

Mets co-CEO, Alex Cohen, the wife of owner Steve Cohen, is more hands-on in terms of day-today operations than her husband is. A few weeks ago, she greeted fans entering the rotunda at Citi Field and handed each customer a Mets “Pride” cap. I would have paid to watch Jeff Wilpon greet fans that way when his dad, Fred, ran the Mets.

WFAN afternoon air personality Evan Roberts is a well-known Mets fan. He has written his first book, “My Mets Bible” (Triumph Books), Roberts, who is obsessive about keeping score of games even when he watches them on television, shared photos of his 30-plus years of using the Bob Carpenter Scorebook, along with his good and bad Mets memories of those games.

I had to chuckle how ESPN New York and YES Yankees play-by-play voice Michael Kay took offense at an ad SNY bought on his radio show touting the Mets broadcast booth as the best in

Nancy Atlas Honors Clarence Clemons

If you like kick-ass original music. Homegrown on a dented ’58. Sweat down the middle of your back. An occasional lump in your throat. A dirty blonde occasionally destroying a drunken heckler. Or maybe watching a cowboy-hooded bald man throw down some insane electric guitar. Pedal Steel anyone? Killer Joe swelling off of a low bass hum. If you enjoy hearing stories that may make you spit out your beer in laughter. If you are open to sonic surprises and fabulous guest sit-ins – then this is the band for you.

Sweating alongside Nancy Atlas on any given night is her right-hand men of 27 years, Johnny Blood on Lead Guitar and Brett King on Bass. In the spring of 2023, NYC powerhouse Denny McDermott joined in on Drums, and Killer Joe Delia paired off on keys, organ, and back up vocals. Greg McMullen soon joined in as a sit-in with pedal steel and his energy and musicality could not be denied. Together they have been reigniting a band that has been throwing down for over a quarter of a century and based on the last year of shows… there is no end in sight any time soon.

Nancy Atlas and her band has opened for everyone under the sun (Crosby, Stills and Nash, Lucinda Williams, Jimmy Buffett, Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, and on and on and on).

Their passionate live shows and legit songwriting have garnered them a very real, committed following that in turn has shattered house records at the top East End Venues: The Stephen Talkhouse, The Surf Lodge, and Bay Street Theater to name a few.

The Nancy Atlas Project will be honoring Clarence Clemons in their upcoming show at My Fathers Place, 1221 Old Northern Boulevard, in Roslyn on August 8th For more info www.myfathersplace.com.

The first two players taken in the NBA Draft, Zaccharie Risacher and Alex Sarr, both hail from France, as did last year’s top pick, Victor Wembanyama. Sarr is from Bordeaux but was a bit snippy when I asked him to recommend a good red wine from the region.

University of Kentucky guard Reed Sheppard was chosen by the Houston Rockets who had the third pick. Sheppard was a guest of the Mets at Citi Field the day before the Draft at Barclays Center. The Mets presented him with a customized City Connect uniform. I asked him if he would now be a Mets fan after he was selected by the Rockets. “I think I will become an Astros fan now!” he said with a smile as a nod to his new city of employment.

Sheppard, and his fellow guard, Stephon Castle, who were drafted by the San Antonio Spurs right after him, were both unaware Texas does not have a state income tax. They were happy to learn that economic nugget.

Interestingly, NBA All-Star Donovan Mitchell, who grew up a Mets fan in Westchester, was also at the Subway Series. He wore an old Robin Ventura #4 jersey.

Last month Comcast held a media preview for the upcoming Summer Olympics in Paris. Whitestone native Mike Tirico will be anchoring once again. He was happy to hear Queens will have an Olympian, fencer Lauren Scruggs from Ozone Park. “I hope to have the opportunity to say her name often,” he told me.

SUMMER BENEFIT CONCERTS

Turning Music Into Meals

Comcast will be using celebrities to gain ratings. Snoop Dogg, Kevin Hart, Kenan Thompson, and Jimmy Fallon will all be participating for the NBC Universal networks. SNL “Weekend Update” co-anchor, and a very funny man, Colin Jost will be playing it straight calling the surfing competition. In a move which has generated controversy, veteran sportscaster Al Michaels is allowing Comcast to use AI to simulate his voice for highlight summaries which fans access on their phones and computers.

The annual Summer Fancy Food Show held last month at Javits Center had a significant sports aspect to it. Former Mets infielder Justin Turner launched Snackmates, a line of low-sugar, healthy munchies. Tennis star Novak Djokovic is the face of Waterdrops, a dissolvable cube containing electrolytes which you put in any bottle of water to get flavor and energy. Cider Life and Nirvana Super were two sports drink exhibitors whose products reduce inflammation and cramping, have NFL star QB Dak Prescott and Steph Curry, as investors. If you enjoy kosher snacks while you are watching sporting events, Manischewitz has expanded its brand into cocktail franks, knishes, blintzes, rugalach, and babka. Long Beach-based Mike’s Philly Fluff brings some needed taste to the normally bland world of pound cake.

WHEELS & DEALS

RORY BLOCK BOB DYLAN TRIBUTE

Rory Block relives her days growing up in Greenwich Village on her new album. In the 1960s, Greenwich Village was at the epicenter of the burgeoning folk music boom that was happening around the world, and a young Rory Block had a ringside seat to this evolution. With the release of her new album, Positively 4h Street: A Tribute to Bob Dylan, she gifts the sounds of that era to listeners everywhere. Taking a break from her award-winning Power Women of The Blues series, which has shone a light on women songwriters and performers over her three most recent albums, Rory throws her skills as a finger-picker and traditional blues arranger behind one of the greatly respected leading artists and songwriter of all-time: Bob Dylan. Performing all instruments herself, Rory combines acoustic and slide guitars, as well as drums and acoustic bass, to create a one-of-a kind arrangement of Dylan’s songbook.

NEW CALLIOPE WREN SINGLE

Emerging Singer/songwriter Calliope Wren presents “Fading”, now available on Spotify and all the major music services. Calliope Wren’s latest single, “Fading,” is about letting go of control. submission to the universe. The lonely, uncomfortable, blissful journey of oneself.

In “Fading,” Calliope captures the profound sense of longing for a sense of home and belonging that sometimes seems to slip away. The lyrics vividly portray the internal struggle of holding onto memories of better times while recognizing the painful reality that those moments are slipping away.

SUMMER THEATER: THE HEAT IS ON

Who would have thought another revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats” would become this summer’s unlikely hit?

But “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” is not your mother’s “Cats.”

Instead this radically revised “Cats” is filtered through a queer lens, transforming the overly familiar musical into the world of Ballroom and Vogue runway competitions while doing justice to its tuneful earwigs of songs. Under the direction of PACNYC’s Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch, the marvelously talented cast – with strong, distinctive personalities and amazing acrobatic and vocal dexterity – struts the runway to bring an original twist to the various cat tales. The limited engagement has already been extended through August 11, with rumors that it may move to Broadway. (Perlman Performing Arts Center) pacnyc.org/whats-on/cats-thejellicle-ball/

Two-time Tony-winner Sutton Foster and Michael Urie display their comic chops as they reprise their hilarious performances as Princess Winnifred The Woebegone who swims a moat to find a husband and Prince Dauntless, who is ruled by his domineering mother, in the latest City Center’s Encores! hit to move to Broadway. The hilarious 1959 fractured fairytale, “Once Upon a Mattress,” based on The Princess and the Pea, with lilting music by Mary Rodgers and witty lyrics by Marshall Barer, has been adapted by “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and directed by Lear deBessonet. Previews begin July 31. (Hudson Theatre) https://onceuponamattressnyc.com/

Another off-Broadway to Broadway transfer, the two-hander “Job,” has been described as “80-minutes of pretty much pure tension.” Starring “Succession” actors Peter Friedman and Sydney Lemmon, the psychological thriller by Max

NYC MULTI INSTRUMENTALIST TOMIN

Tomin, the NYC-raised brass and reed-centered multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and bioinformatician — announced Flores para Verene / Cantos para Caramina, his debut album for International Anthem due out August 2nd on LP, Cassette and Digital Download.

An evocative collection of jazz haikus, this album hears Tomin employ a range of clarinets, trumpets and sine waves to pay homage to his late grandmother, his older sister, and the jazz elders who have inspired him. Weaving together diminutive interpretations of jazz greats, alongside his original compositions, the lowlit moods and modal sketches of Flores para Verene / Cantos para Caramina conjure a timelessness that quietly invites the listener into Tomin’s sonic world.

The announcement is accompanied by the release of the lead single “Angela’s Angel,” a horn-led fanfare of gentle majesty, barely a minute long, but no less powerful as a result. Interpreting avant-garde master Granchan Moncur III’s tune of the same name,

Wolf Friedlich examines the relationship between a woman who, after being placed on leave following a viral videotaped workplace incident, wants to return to her Big Tech job and the therapist who must evaluate her but suspects her work might be doing her more harm than good. Previews begin July 15. (Hayes Theatre) https://jobtheplay.com/

Scott Ehrenpreis stars in the autobiographical oneman show, “Clowns Like Me,” written and directed by Jason Cannon, which concerns his humorous story about living with mental illnesses – including autism spectrum disorder, OCD, bipolar disorder, social anxiety and depression – and how the stage becomes the sanctuary where he finds empowerment and self-expression in the spotlight. With book, music and lyrics by Caroline Sherman and Robert Hull “Empire The Musical” celebrates three generations of New York City dreamers and doers – the Mohawk Skywalkers, industrialist visionaries and can-do immigrants (from the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression and the Centennial Year of 1976) who built the iconic skyscraper. RECORD REVIEWS

MOTU'S

23RD ALBUM A HIT

For those musicians who believe there are limited opportunities for original music on Long Island, Dr. Rich Michelson should be your muse. Dr, Michelson, who goes by the name Motu (Music of the Universe), has just released his 23rd, yes you heard it right, 23rd release, entitled Acceding To The Apocalypse.

Motu has had over 9.5 million views on YouTube and has over a quarter of a million followers on Facebook. So much for the belief there's no interest in original music.

Motu's new album is a darkish album, portraying mankind's propensity for self destruction. The album is all in with songs that are Americana, blues, rock and much more. They are skillfully crafted and executed.

The album boasts that it is a throwback to the days when songs had social relevance and took a stand. Take a stand the album does. Each of the 10 songs touches on a different foible of society and mankind.

On “I'm Looking For Answers”, with a growling voice, Motu talks about politicians with their fancy cars. Each thought is followed by the refrain “I'm looking for answers.”

The song features excellent guitar work. On one song Motu sings about a politician “In Love With His Reflection.” Sound familiar?

On “I Can't Be Denied,” Motu takes on personal relationships. This bluesy tune talks about the man telling his woman, “You're My Woman, So Make Me Satisfied. You Need To Take Care of Your Man and Then He's On Fire.” No equal rights of the sexes with this couple.

“Acceding To The Apocalypse” is one of the strongest cuts on the album, with excellent guitar work and fine rhythm. With drums keeping the beat, the guitars wail. Each note is stretched out like play dough. This is one fine and thoughtful album. Do yourself a favor and check it out today on Amazon, Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora and wherever else music is streamed or sold.

METAL ALLEGIANCE EAST COAST SHOW

Metal Allegiance began as a celebration of heavy metal, powered by the almost tribal bond shared between the extreme music community’s most revered trailblazers, armed with a list of contributors onstage (and off) that read like a Wikipedia entry on the genre itself – whose “core 4” is comprised of David Ellefson, Mark Menghi, Alex Skolnick, and Mike Portnoy.

On September 6th, 2024, the band will rock the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, New Jersey, on a bill that will also feature Meanstreak and Held Hostage. As with their previous shows, expect a setlist that balances original material with classic covers of metal royalty

On Sale: https://www.axs.com/events/579121/metal-allegiance-tickets. The Starland show will come nine months after the group’s last performance in January, at the House of Blues Anaheim, as part of NAMM, and this will be the first Metal Allegiance show to feature the group’s core 4 in six years on the East Coast. As with previous shows, expect several guests, this time including Troy Sanders (Mastodon), John Bush (Armored Saint) and Dave Davidson (Revocation), among others.

This compilation was curated by drummer Steve Luongo, who served as John Entwistle’s producer, bandmate, business partner and good friend for many years. NEW ELLIOTT MURPHY SONG

In celebration of turning seventy-five last March and in conjunction with his “50 years on the road” anniversary (with over forty albums and three-thousand shows all around the world), Elliott Murphy has released a new single Old-Timer” on all streaming platforms. “Old-Timer” was inspired by Elliott’s annual “Birthday Shows” in Paris (where he has lived for the last 35 years).

As he tells it: “Last March, I received a splendid birthday blast-off during my annual sold-out two-night soiree at the fabled New Morning club in my adopted hometown of Paris and I wanted to write and perform a song especially for that momentous occasion. New Morning is my home away from home as I’ve been playing there steadily for over thirty years now. I was inspired to write “Old-Timer” just a week before my shows, as a kind of self-congratulatory birthday song from me to myself.

The introduction to the song is an energetic acoustic guitar riff slowing down, and then the lyrics begin. Elliott says the arrangement reflects the lyrics. “I wanted the song to represent aging as a visceral function of slowing down so I asked my producer Gaspard to take my finger picked nylon string guitar and speed it up to warp speed at the intro and then slow it down. Just like life …” Elliott Murphy - Vocals, Guitars Gaspard Murphy – Moog Produced by Gaspard Murphy

SKRILLEX SINGLE “PUSH” WITH HAMDI AND TAICHU

Skrillex has officially released his new single “Push” with fellow club music trailblazer Hamdi and Argentinian singer TAICHU. The viral club anthem was originally premiered last year during one of Jyoty’s Rinse FM broadcasts and has made its way into some of the top DJs in the world’s sets since then.

Skrillex and Hamdi’s masterful ability to produce exactly what the dance floor calls for are on full display as minimal elements push and pull on one another at just the right time to create an inescapable need to dance.
