FIRE ISLAND SEASHORE 60TH ANNY
On September 11, 1964 a new National Seashore was created on Fire Island. It is one of ten National Seashores in the United States. The formation of the Fire Island National Seashore (FINS) 60 years ago was a momentous event for the barrier island. It resulted in a unique cooperative working arrangement with the National Park Service. It also precluded Robert Moses building a highway through the barrier island, much like Ocean Parkway.
Fire Island has gone through many changes since it arose from the ocean in the not-so-distant past. The source of its name and much of its earliest history is shrouded in mystery, but Long Islanders are very familiar with its unique landscape.
The variety of things to do and see on the island makes it a wonderful destination. Whether you are looking for wilderness hiking (Otis Pike Wilderness Designated Area), a unique maritime woodland (Sunken Forest), visiting the various communities, swimming at the beaches, or immersing yourself in the maritime history of the island at the Fire Island Lighthouse, Fire Island is a Long Island treasure that has something for everyone.
On Saturday September 14, Fire Island celebrates the 60th anniversary of its National Seashore designation with a free concert on the terrace of the Fire Island Lighthouse, just a short walk from Robert Moses State Park’s Field 5. Long Island’s “Just Sixties,” the longest running Sixties tribute in the United States, will perform from 2-4 p.m., and there will be several other festivities at the Lighthouse. So bring your blankets and lawn chairs, and get ready to commemorate this memorable event! For more info www.fireislandlighthouse.com or call 631-583-5901.

BONHAMS AUCTION: FAIRGROUND WORLD OF ROSS HUTCHINSON ONLINE
Auction: August 14 – September 11
Amassed over 40 years, Bonhams is offering for sale one of the most important collections of fairground art still in existence today – featuring an eclectic menagerie of carved carousel animals, posters and sculptural forms, as well as coin operated ‘working model’ machines.
“The Fairground, which amazed me with its display of forgotten objects and art. Dealers and collectors took interest and started looking for survivors. First to strike me were the signs with their swirling fonts and gaudy colors. Then as gradually the few carved pieces started to appear, the quality of the Victorian fairground was disclosed; carvings done by skilled men working in the tradition of ships figureheads, tobacco shop figures and church decoration.
Most of their work has been destroyed, and their names forgotten, carvings burnt for the gold leaf finish. It has taken me over 40 years to gather these baroque survivors

JIM BREUER AT WHBPAC
Not long after Jim Breuer did his first official standup gig in Clearwater, Florida, in 1989, industry folks began asking him, “What’s your point of view?” “I don’t know…” He searched for a meaningful response to a ridiculous question. “To make people laugh?”
The freewheeling, New York bred comic storyteller – who made the list of Comedy Central’s “100 Greatest Standups of All Time” – is hotter than ever, a global touring sensation and regular presence on radio and television whose rabid audience, he’s thrilled to note, is filled with “lifetimers.” Once folks see him live, they’re hooked.
The fans who got into Breuer in the new millennium were drawn into his whirlwind journey through his Comedy Central specials such as “Hardcore” (2002) and “Let’s Clear The Air” (2009), one of the highest rated comedy specials in the network’s history – popularly known as his “coming out party” as a dad, cleaning up his act and focusing on the fun and foibles of family life.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 23RD
SPORTS BEAT
The New York Yankees bolstered their roster at the trade deadline by acquiring infielder-outfielder Jazz Chisholm from the Miami Marlins. Chisholm has power, which is typical for any Yankees position player, but also gives them speed, an offensive weapon they rarely have. He immediately provided dividends for Yankees general manager Brian Cashman by hitting a pair of home runs in his second game Yankees against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
You do not have to be a fan of the Bronx Bombers to enjoy reading “The Yankee Way” (Doubleday), the latest book from SNY baseball analyst Andy Martino. Brian Cashman, because of his longevity in the Yankees corporate suite, gets most of the focus here, but Martino credits former Yankees executive Bill Livesey for creating a manual for how to properly value offense and defense at each nonpitching position.
While Martino does not purport his book a linear Yankees history, he does share some fun stories, such as how pitcher Tommy John ran up to George Steinbrenner’s office in his uniform wanting to punch him out because he put his wife in the upper deck for a game he was pitching.
Martino expresses his admiration for the late Gene Michael, who he fortuitously interviewed shortly before his unexpected passing. It was Michael who had the stones to stand up to Steinbrenner when few others would. He also ended the Yankees’ habit of trading blue-chip prospects for over-the-hill veterans. It was Michael who pulled the trigger on the surprising 1992 trade with the Cincinnati Reds which sent Roberto Kelly to the Queen City in exchange for Paul O’Neill. That trade set the basis for the Yankees’ 1990s dynasty.
Martino also gets both Brian Cashman and Derek Jeter to recall the acrimonious 2010 negotiations when “The Captain” became a free agent for the first time in his career. Hard feelings lasted until Jeter became a minority owner of the Miami Marlins, and learned what it was like to be on the opposite side of the negotiating table. The
THEATER: FALL PREVIEW
Entertainment icons and legends grace Broadway as a prelude to the exciting fall season ahead. Academy Award-winner Robert Downey Jr. makes his Broadway debut as Jacob McNeal, a celebrated writer with a new novel, an estranged son, and an unhealthy fascination with Artificial Intelligence in Pulitzer Prize-winner Ayad Akhtar’s new play “McNeal.” Brittany Bellizeare, Rafi Gavron, Melora Hardin, Andrea Martin, Ruthie Ann Miles, Saisha Talwar co-star along with a “Metahuman Digital Likeness of Downey.” Tony-winner Bartlett Sher directs. Previews begin September 5. (Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater.) https://mcnealbroadway.com/
Mia Farrow and Patti LuPone star as a recently divorced Iowa woman and the middleaged woman from the Bronx who moves in with her in “The Roommate,” Jen Silverman’s dark comedy, directed by Jack O’Brien (winner of a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement this year). Described as a “one-act about second acts,” “The Roommate” follows the blossoming intimacy between the two women from different backgrounds as they explore identity, morality and the promise of reinvention. Previews begin August 29. (Booth Theater). https://theroommatebway.com.
Originally slated for Broadway, “Forbidden Broadway: Merrily We Stole A Song” has found a new home off-Broadway where creator, director and writer Gerard Alessandrini sends up current Broadway shows, including “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Stereophonic”, “The Outsiders” and of course, “Merrily We Roll Along”; parodies Broadway stars such as Patti LuPone, Daniel Radcliffe, Ariana DeBose; and includes selections from his “Forbidden Sondheim.” A popular off-Broadway institution for over 40 years and winner of a special Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre, this edition of “Forbidden Broadway” promises to be a hoot! Previews begin August 30. (Theater 555) https://theater555.venuetix.com/show/
SNY and WFAN personality Sal Licata knows how to enrage Mets fans with his predictions on social media. Just after Memorial Day two years ago, he declared the National League East race over with the Mets as the champions. Of course, they fell apart in September and were overtaken by the Atlanta Braves. Last month, Licata declared the Mets would be the top NL wildcard team. Within an hour of that tweet, Mets ace Kodai Senga injured his left leg and would be lost for the rest of the 2024 season. The Mets were demolished by the Braves in the two games following that unwelcome news. The Mets’ starting pitching staff has been thin all season. Mets fans looking for a ray of hope in their fan system can find it with Binghamton Rumble Ponies pitcher Brandon Sproat. The righthander was the Mets representative at the 2024 All-Star Futures Game held last month in Arlington, TX.

Two new off-Broadway works have politics on their minds: “Ghost of John McCain,” a new musical with music and lyrics by Drew Fornarola and book by Scott Elmegreen, imagines the late soldier-turned senator in the afterlife where he is trapped inside the mind of President Donald Trump. A Greek chorus of other public figures including Hillary Clinton, Roy Cohn and Eva Peron rebel against the President’s demands for affirmation. Previews begin September 3. (SoHo Playhouse) Ghostofjohnmccain.com
Based on actual events, Catherine Gropper’s “The Meeting: The Interpreter” concerns the 2016 Trump Tower Meetings in which a Russian/American interpreter is confronted by government systems and circumstances beyond his control and faces the loss of individuality and privacy. Frank Wood and Kelley Curran star under the direction of Brian Mertes. (Theatre at St. Clements) https://meetinginterpreterplay.com/
This year’s Best Featured Actress Tony-winner Kara Young stars with Biko Eisen-Martin and Michael Rishawn in the world premiere of Douglas Lyons’ romantic comedy “Table 17,” in which a previously engaged couple reunite for dinner to rehash their romantic past despite the intrusion of waiters and complicated memories. Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is known as “The Polar Bear,” but that does not mean he is not a fan of other ursine species. He was excited to know the San Diego Zoo had just received a pair of pandas from China. In their honor, the San Diego Padres will be giving away panda bobbleheads to all fans who attend their August 23 game with the Mets at Petco Park. Alonso told me he wants to get one from the Padres.
The end of August is a fun time to be in San Diego, and Petco Park is one of the best venues to watch a baseball game. JetBlue has daily direct service to San Diego from JFK. The Hyatt Regency La Jolla is located within walking distance of the University Town Center stop on the San Diego Trolley which takes you to Petco Park, so you do not have to drive. The Hyatt Regency La Jolla has a junior Olympic-sized swimming pool if you want to get in some laps.
All eyes will be on Tom Brady when he begins his stint as Fox’s top NFL analyst working alongside Kevin Burkhardt, CBS Sports will also be inviting media scrutiny with their revamped “NFL Today” studio show. JJ Watt and Matt Ryan are replacing Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms. Ryan has shown a quick wit. Last year when he was in the broadcast booth for a Jets game, he made the humorous and cogent observation that QB Zach Wilson held onto the football longer than it took to read a Cheesecake Factory menu.

The best value in sports, US Open Fan week, will take place August 19-25 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. There is no admission fee to watch the wildcard qualifiers for tennis players hoping to be part of the main draw of the Open. It is a terrific way to see both up-and-comers, as well as veterans hoping to regain their ranking. All the food concession stands will be open. I like sports mascots as much as the next guy, but Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls should have rethought their Teletubby look-alike, REDD.

HORN PLAYER EXTRAORDINAIRE JIMMY CARPENTER
Las Vegas-based Jimmy Carpenter is on a roll. The saxophonist/singer/songwriter is a perennial favorite at the annual Blues Music Awards in Memphis, having been voted in the “Best Instrumentalist/Horn” category with seven nominations and two wins. Now, he proves he’s Just Got Started, with the upcoming release of his new album on September 13. Just Got Started was recorded in March at Greaseland Studios in San Jose, California, and was produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Christoffer “Kid” Andersen.
“There are nods to some of the Blues icons: a very different version of Little Walter’s ‘My Babe;’ a nice cover of Otis Rush’s ‘Working Man;’ a nod to Delbert McClinton, one of my favorite people, and his song ‘Leap of Faith’ (Lisa ‘Li’l Baby’ Andersen absolutely crushes that one); as well as a super funky version of Allen Toussaint’s ‘Night People.”
“And for the first time I was able to record not one, but two tunes from my saxophone hero, King Curtis: ‘Soul Theme’ and ‘Midnight Blue.’ In kind of a full circle thing, bass player Jerry Jemmott was King Curtis’ bassist, so I felt kind of a cosmic connection to him as we recorded those, and of course, Jerry’s bass lines were perfect.”
RUTHIE FOSTER RELEASES ‘HEARTSHINE’
Ruthie Foster, the acclaimed singersongwriter known for her powerful blend of blues, folk, and gospel, unveils her evocative new single “Heartshine,” the second release from her album Mileage, set to drop on August 23 via the legendary Sun Records. This single follows the uplifting “Rainbow” and continues to showcase Foster’s unparalleled ability to meld soulful melodies with heartfelt storytelling.
“Heartshine” emerged from the creative synergy between Foster and her collaborators, Tyler Bryant (of Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown) and Rebecca Lovell (one-half of Larkin Poe). The trio found a profound connection in their songwriting process, and their conversations evolved into poetic lyrics and resonant melodies.
Foster’s milestone tenth studio album is a testament to her journey through life and music. Produced by Tyler Bryant, the album features a collection of songs that reflect Foster’s personal experience, from love and triumph to deep loss. Each track offers a glimpse into her life, inviting listeners to join her on an intimate and transformative journey.
CHICK COREA ELEKTRIC BAND II - PAINT THE WORLD
It’s been 30 years since 27-time GRAMMY® winner, keyboard virtuoso Chick Corea unveiled his brand-new incarnation of the Elektric Band, the Elektric Band II. This 1993 outing featuring the lineup of guitarist Mike Miller, bassist Jimmy Earl, drummer Gary Novak, and saxophonist Eric Marienthal (the lone holdover from Chick’s previous iteration of the Elektric Band), was released on Candid Records, on all streaming platforms, CD, and for the first time ever as a 2-disc vinyl set.
Recorded at Mad Hatter Studios in Los Angeles and comprised primarily of first takes, PAINT THE WORLD is marked by the usual proficiency, spontaneity, impeccable execution, and jaw-dropping displays of chops that had characterized Corea’s previous five Elektric Band albums. Written with these specific players in mind, the album is notable for its “less is more” approach to Corea’s particular style of genre bending composition. This reissue is also notable for featuring “Final Frontier,” a rare track previously only available on Japan and Europe editions of the album. PAINT THE WORLD explores both acoustic and electric territory, resulting in another entry in the stellar Elektric Band discography. If you enjoy jazz fusion from the mid 70’s and early 80’s – you’ll love PAINT THE WORLD!

T. GRAHAM BROWN’S NEW ALBUM GRAMMY®-nominated, CMA Awardwinner, and newly inducted Grand Ole Opry member T. Graham Brown announced the release of his new studio album, From Memphis to Muscle Shoals, available via Warner Music GroupADA. The album features legendary collaborations with artists such as Bettye LaVette, Sam Moore, Delbert McClinton, Dwight Yoakam, Eddie Floyd, Little Anthony, Randy Houser, Sammy Hagar, Tanya Tucker, Wynonna, and Zach Williams.
‘From Memphis To Muscle Shoals’ is the record that I’ve been wanting to make forever. When my co-producer, Billy Lawson, and I began working on this project, we couldn’t have dreamed that it would turn out like this. We set out to make an old-school soul music tribute album and worked very hard to make it sound authentic. We cut it at FAME and Wishbone studios in Muscle Shoals, using musicians from down there, led by sole surviving “Swamper,” bassist David Hood. Eleven of the fourteen tracks are duets featuring Country Music, Rock and Roll, and Rhythm and Blues Hall of Famers. I hope everyone will have as much fun listening to it as we had making it.”

RAINBOW LIVE IN MUNICH 1977 2CD + DVD SET
On September 19, Mercury Studios will release Rainbow: Live In Munich 1977 as a Special Edition 2CD+DVD package. This show has been previously released as individual DVD and 2CD packages in the past, and this is the first time they have been packaged together. Captured during the band’s 1977 European tour, Live In Munich is the only full live concert ever filmed with the classic Ritchie Blackmore/Ronnie James Dio/ Cozy Powell classic line-up. Rainbow was the brainchild of legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, created in 1975 after his departure from Deep Purple. A string of hit albums ignited immediate success, which persevered until 1983, when Blackmore disbanded the group (and re- joined Deep Purple). Featuring the line-up of Blackmore, Cozy Powell (drums), Bob Daisley (bass), David Stone (keyboards), and premiere Rock and Roll vocalist Ronnie James Dio.
The DVD includes original promo videos for “Long Live Rock ‘N’ Roll,” “Gates of Babylon,” and “L.A. Connection,” a photo gallery, slideshow with audio commentary, interviews, and the “Rainbow Over Texas ‘76” feature, which includes additional interviews and performance footage. Truly, Live In Munich 1977 is a brilliant showcase of the primal electricity of Rainbow.

COAL CHAMBER
“FIEND
FOR THE FANS” TOUR
It’s been almost three decades since Coal Chamber, the Californian metal quartet, came screaming out of the dead zone of Hollywood in the early Nineties. When singer Bradley ‘Dez’ Fafara and Miguel ‘Meegs’ Rascón first met in 1992, these two hot-headed misfits first wrote songs under the name She’s In Pain, recruiting bassist Rayna Foss and drummer Mikey Cox. After, renaming themselves Coal Chamber and honing a unique sound and art direction..
Over the next six years,Coal Chamber experienced several lifetimes’ worth of excess, making their trajectory both unpredictable and stressful. Tours with Danzig, Type O Negative, Megadeth, Pantera and many other artists built their reputation, but substance abuse nearly derailed the musicians and intra-band tensions almost destroyed them.
You literally could not make this story up, and yet the 30 years of angst and adrenaline that make up this band of survivors can be heard in every note on the albums in this collection. There’s a reason why the word ‘Loco’ is so closely associated with Coal Chamber—and the madness isn’t over yet.
Coal Chamber hits the road August 23rd for the 28-date Fiend For The Fans Tour 2024 PLUS both the Rocklahoma and Aftershock Festivals!
KING DIAMOND TOUR
KING DIAMOND will embark on a long-awaited North American headlining tour this Fall! The Saint Lucifer’s Hospital 1920 trek will commence on October 15th in San Antonio, Texas and run through December 6th in Dallas, Texas. Support will be provided by Overkill and Night Demon. Additional backing vocals for the KING DIAMOND set will be provided by special guest, Myrkur.
Elaborates KING DIAMOND on what fans can expect, “This is Saint Lucifer’s Hospital, enter if you dare! We have been busy putting this ever-growing horror story together, and it’s still growing. I know the end of it, but how we will get there will be a long trip. There are so many characters, and so many unexpected things along this journey. It’s a crazy family on another timeline in 1920.”
“There will be additional backing vocals by Myrkur and she’ll be playing organ for songs that need it. There will be some horrific surprises taking place on stage, but we are not to be held responsible since we are on a whole different timeline in 1920. It was back at the time when medicine was going through a dark period with lots of testing on human beings in order to progress medicine. Secure your tickets at kingdiamondcoven.com.
