SPORTS BEAT

Last month’s Fanatics Fest, held at Javits Center, did follow the New York Comic Con blueprint as it gave sports fans plenty of interactive exhibits, celebrities, and memorabilia merchants.

ESPN’s leading air personality, Stephen A. Smith, was a busy man. In addition to hosting his “First Take” morning debate show from Fanatics Fest, Smith channeled his inner Barbara Walters by interviewing NFL royalty, Eli Manning, and Tom Brady, in separate panels.

I ran into one of Smith’s debate partners, Chris “Mad Dog” Russo there. I told him he made the right move leaving WFAN fifteen years ago for SiriusXM given the financial straits Audacy, WFAN’s current owner faces. “You’re not kidding!” he replied with his on-air hearty chuckle.

It was a gutsy move by ESPN executives to have a team of teenage announcers call the recent Little League Classic New York Yankees-Detroit Tigers game at Williamsport, PA as its alternative telecast on ESPN2. The gamble paid off as the announcers, especially play-by-play voice Thomas Gamba, showed poise and were not intimidated by the big stage. Gamba, a Garden City native, was a student at the broadcasting camp run by WNBC-TV sports anchor Bruce Beck.

There has a been plenty of chatter on social media about the possibility of Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor winning the 2024 National League Most Valuable Player Award. Lindor has played phenomenally since Memorial Day. Unfortunately, he was once again a no-show for the Mets two months of the season. He also was not named to the NL All-Star team because of his slow start, and that will also hurt his chances.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Hank Aaron breaking Babe Ruth’s then all-time home run record of 714. There are a pair of recently published books which commemorate Aaron’s life and the breaking of this long-held record.

Randy Cox’s “715 at 50” (Summer Game Books) does an impressive job recalling the events leading up to April 8, 1974, and goes into detail about that magical evening. He was able to get interviews with two of his teammates, pitchers Ron Reed and Buzz Capra. The book also contains plenty of black & white photos taken of both Aaron and the Braves in the early 1970s.

Veteran sportswriter, and lifelong Braves fan, Dan Schlossberg, provides a more detailed historic perspective about Aaron’s life in his book, “Home

THEATER: A STAR-STUDDED FALL

Media luminaries Julianna Margulies, Zoey Deutch, Katie Holmes, Rachel Zegler and Nicole Scherzinger join Robert Downey Jr., Mia Farrow and Patti LuPone in kicking off this exciting star-studded season. In her Broadway debut, singing sensation Nicole Scherzinger (of Pussycat Dolls fame) brings her Olivier Award-winning performance as faded movie star Norma Desmond to Broadway in Olivier Awardwinning director Jamie Lloyd’s reimagined, minimalist take (with monochromatic set and costumes and live camera projections) on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1993 gothic musical “Sunset Blvd.” Olivier Awardwinner Tom Francis co-stars as the struggling screenwriter she entraps and David Thaxton plays her devoted helpmate Max. Previews begin September 24. (St. James Theatre) Sunsetblvdbroadway.com

Tony Award-winner Jez Butterworth’s (“The Ferryman”) acclaimed new play “The Hills of California,” transfers from the West End with its London cast –Laura Donnelly, Leanne Best, Ophelia Lovibond and Helena Wilson - reprising their roles under the direction of Sam Mendes. Set in the sweltering summer of 1976, the play concerns sisters who return to their childhood home, a rundown guest house in the English seaside town of Blackpool, as their mother lies dying upstairs. The play flashes back to their teen years as a song-and-dance troupe (played by younger actors) under the tutelage of their domineering mother (Donnelly). Based on her bestselling memoir, novelist-screenwriter Delia Ephron’s (“You’ve Got Mail”) romantic comedy “Left on Tenth” stars “The Good Wife’s” Juliana Margulies as a woman who reconnects with a man from her past (Peter Gallagher) and faces the complicated world of dating later in life. With the catchphrase “Love eclipses everything,” the optimistic comedy follows Ephron from the death of her

beloved husband to a thrilling romance. Five-time Tony-winner Susan Stroman directs the cast which includes Peter Francis James and Kate MacCluggage. Previews begin September 26. (James Earl Jones Theatre) leftontenthbroadway. com

“The youth are f**ked. Left to their own devices in their parents’ world of violent ends, an impulsive pair of star-crossed lovers hurtle towards their inescapable fate,” reads the ad copy for director Sam Gold’s contemporary take on “Romeo + Juliet.” Rachel Zegler (Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” and the new “Snow White”) and Emmy-winner Kit Connor (“Heartstopper”) make their Broadway debuts as Shakespeare’s tragic young lovers in this hot-ticket production for “a new generation on the edge.” Music is by Jack Antonoff and movement direction is by Sonya Tayeh. Previews begin September 26. (Circle in the Square) romeoandjulietnyc.com

Hailed as “a dead-serious indictment of antisemitism and bigotry from a dizzyingly kaleidoscopic array of angles,” “Our Class,” opens offBroadway after its sold-out engagement this year at BAM. Polish playwright Tadeusz Slobodzianek’s history-based drama about a 1941 massacre in a rural Polish village is told through the lives of ten Polish classmates, friends and neighbors -- five Jewish and five Catholic -- who turn on one another with life and death consequences. Run King” (Sports Publishing). Schlossberg reveals Aaron’s Hall of Fame teammates, Eddie Mathews, and Warren Spahn, were not choirboys. Mathews liked to drink and carouse after games, while Spahn could be a cruel needler. We also learn Hank Aaron admitted he was a lousy golfer, but a particularly good tennis player.

Speaking of tennis, over 200,000 spectators took advantage of the best bargain in sports, the US Open qualifying tournament (now known as US Open Fan Week), where there is no admission charge. On the first day of the US Open over 75,000 ticketed spectators came through the gates, which was a one-day record.

New Balance used Fan Week to have a press event for the launch of 2023 US Open’s women’s champion Coco Gauff’s latest athletic shoe, the CG2. Gauff is currently the only female tennis player with her own shoe line.

CBS Sports held its first in-person media day last month in five years. Ian Eagle properly wondered if defensive end Haason Reddick missing training

camp because of a contractual dispute would create the bad karma for 2024 which Jets fans have gotten all too accustomed to.

Former Falcons QB Matt Ryan has joined CBS’s “NFL Today” panel. Ryan told me that while the Jets have improved, he feels they are still behind the Bills and Dolphins in the AFC East. Ryan got off the best quip about ex-Jets QB Zach Wilson last year. “He holds the ball longer than it takes to read the Cheesecake Factory menu!”

CBS’s lead analyst, Tony Romo, told me that Tom Brady, who will be Romo’s counterpart at FOX, has been talking to him about the job. “Tom will do great,” Romo promised.

WOMEN WHO ROCK

Splitting time between Cape Cod and NYC, when she is not performing theater or acting in film, Stott is the bewitching synergy between Joni Mitchell and Chrissie Hynde, performing sincere and engaging songs about social change and observation. After releasing her track “Water to Blood” (an Earth Day song), Stott will be releasing something different this summer - A dance remix of her track “I Can’t Hide” (Audible Yays) - Audible Yays is the remix moniker for producers Barb Morrison, They/them (Blondie, Rufus Wainwright) and Bart Schoudel (Beyonce, Rhianna, Katy Perry, Lukas Graham).

Anne Stott is a singer/songwriter of cinematic alt rock, an actor and a political rabble rouser. Her “bad girl to the good girls and good girl to the bad girls” energy infuses her music and live performances with an edgy compassion while her elastic style embraces eighties pop and nineties grunge infused with modern moody atmo

MELANIE

MACLAREN’S “GET IT BACK”

Nashville’s Melanie MacLaren continues her creative journey with the release of her single “Get it Back,” which is out via ToneTree. With this song, Melanie has mastered the art of creating infectiously arranged melodies that cleverly mask the song’s dark subject matter.

“Get it Back” is from a body of work that was written coming out of a time in life marred by grief, illness, and the loss of family members. The songs on this project are an ode to seeing things as they are–without mythology, without man made glory. “Get it Back” follows the release of “Heaven Is” which offered up a reality check on the afterlife, told through Melanie’s lyrical filter.

These new songs follow a very prolific period, including the release of her debut EP Kill My Time in 2022. The EP was followed by a collaborative folk EP of duets called Tadpole Emporium with songwriter Lorkin O’Reilly (DUG).

LUNA LI

“WHEN A THOUGHT GROWS WINGS”

Singer/songwriter and multiinstrumentalist Luna Li has shared the newest single “Bon Voyage” from her upcoming album When a Thought Grows Wings, out August 23rd via In Real Life/AWAL. The song is the perfect album closer where Li flexes her full range of her compositional talents, layering surging string swells, winsome harp ripples, and woodwinds into a soaring orchestra. Lyrically inspired by a misheard Melody’s Echo Chamber lyric, the track underscores an explorative and exhilarating new era of Luna Li.

Li is hitting the road this fall for a headlining North American Tour with stops at New York’s Bowery Ballroom, Los Angeles’ Troubadour and a hometown show at Toronto’s The Danforth Music Hall.

NEW LISA LOEB ALBUM

GRAMMY-winning and platinum-selling artist Lisa Loeb announced a new collaborative album with folk music band The Hollow Trees called That’s What It’s All About. Released on August 23rd, That’s What It’s All About is the newest addition to Loeb’s acclaimed children’s album series and her first since 2016’s Feel What You Feel, which earned a GRAMMY for “Best Children’s Album.” That’s What It’s All About is for kids and grownups alike, an 11-track musical time machine that will take adults and listeners on a song-bysong trip down memory lane.

They also shared the first single off the album along with an official video called “Take It While The Takin’s Good,” one of the brand new originals featured on the album. Of the track, they stated, “This song was inspired by old TV shows like The Little Rascals and The Three Stooges.”

ALISON MOYET “SO AM I”

Alison Moyet inspired a wave of fan anticipation when she announced the October 4th release date of her upcoming album KEY, a collection of 16 reworked singles, fan favorites and deep cuts boosted by two new songs. It quickly became Amazon’s #1 selling vinyl above Taylor Swift, Coldplay and Billie Eilish, while the world-class talent that propelled Alison to achieve two #1 albums, six Top 10 singles, three BRIT Awards and a GRAMMY® nomination was put back in the spotlight with a stunning Radio 2 Piano Room session. Now Alison unveils the album’s third release, “So Am I.”

Produced and arranged by Sean McGhee, “So Am I” is also graced by Suede guitarist Richard Oakes, one of Alison’s other key collaborators in this collection.

In addition to the launch of Key, Alison has been further reflecting on her story with the hit podcast series “40 Moyet Moments,” in which she looks back upon landmark moments in her career to date

TRACY BONHAM “WHETHER YOU FALL”

Formerly an indie rock darling, TRACY BONHAM is now using her life experience and classical violin and piano training to expand her musical palette. However, her new single, “WHETHER YOU FALL” isn’t quite new. She explains, “This song initially appeared on my 2005 album “Blink the Brightest” (Rounder/Zoé). It has been a fan favorite ever since the original recording was placed in the Showtime series and soundtrack for The L Word. The lyrics are as relevant now as they were then, even more.” A song about resilience and recovery, time has given it more depth and relevance in her life.

Recorded at Applehead Recording in Woodstock “Whether You Fall (2024)” is given new life, featuring Rene Hart on Bass, Alvester Garnett on drums, Steve Cardenas on guitar, Olivier Manchon on violin, and Clara Kennedy on cello, while Tracy plays piano and sings. Following previous single “Damn The Sky (For Being Too Wide),” which also featured Hart and Garnett, the new “Whether You Fall” shows Tracy’s continued exploration of melding contemporary jazz sensibilities with her trademark passionate singer/songwriter roots to create musical alchemy.

LACY J. DALTON NEW ALBUM

Singer-songwriter and outlaw original Lacy J. Dalton released her latest album, ‘For The Black Sheep,’ on August 9th (StarVista Music), a deeply reflective collection of songs that delivers a powerful message of unity, empathy and universal kindness.

The album features several standout tracks, including “Devil by A Different Name,” which challenges listeners to confront their biases and embrace one another. “The song asks us to look at our racial, religious, political, and gender-based hatreds. It reminds us that the only power worth pursuing is that of our authentic, honest, centered and grounded self,” says Dalton. Another highlight, “Heart of Hearts,” speaks to the necessity of vulnerability and emotional openness.

OASIS ADD TWO EXTRA WEMBLEY STADIUM SHOWS

After receiving unprecedented demand for tickets for their UK and Ireland stadium tour, Oasis announced two further Wembley Stadiums shows on September 27th and 28th.

The Oasis Live ‘25 tour was the biggest concert launch ever seen in the UK and Ireland, with over 10 million fans from 158 countries queuing to buy tickets. However, such intense demand saw all ticket platforms struggling to cope, resulting in immense frustration and disappointment for fans who missed out after queuing for many hours.

As a small step towards making amends for the situation, a special invitation only ballot ticket sale strategy has been devised for these two shows. Applications to join the ballot will be opened first to the many fans who were unsuccessful in the initial sale with Ticketmaster.

GUESS WHO RESOLUTION OF TRADEMARK DISPUTE

After months of negotiations, Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings of the iconic Canadian rock band The Guess Who announced the resolution of their long-running dispute with fellow former band mates Garry Peterson and Jim Kale following a lawsuit filed in October 2023. Though details of the settlement remain confidential, terms include acquisition of the “The Guess Who” trademark by Bachman and Cummings. Having now settled the long-standing trademark dispute, Bachman, Cummings, Kale, and Peterson – all of whom are Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductees as members of The Guess Who, with Bachman and Cummings two-time inductees for their work with Bachman-Turner Overdrive and as a solo artist, respectively – have expressed their appreciation to one another in a spirit of unity going forward.

The classic lineup of The Guess Who reconvened at various times over the years, including a series of shows captured on 1984’s live album,Together Again! (known as The Best of The Guess Who – Live in the United States). In 1999, the band performed at the closing ceremonies of the Pan Am Games at Winnipeg Stadium at the personal behest of the Premier of Manitoba.

TOM PETTY & HEARTBREAKERS ‘LONG AFTER DARK’

Over four decades after its debut, a deluxe edition of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ groundbreaking but often overlooked 1982 album, Long After Dark, will be released via Geffen/ UMe on October 18. The Petty Legacy archives will share previously unseen newly remastered film and audio from 1982 to 1983 this year, beginning with a new video for the French TV version of “Straight Into Darkness” featuring footage of the band performing at the Record Plant by award-winning director Alan Bibby.

Long After Dark (Deluxe Edition) will feature the songs that were lost in the debate over the album’s original direction. Notable highlights include finding Petty’s version of “Never Be You”—which was a #1 country hit for Rosanne Cash—pop anomaly “Don’t Make Me Walk the Line,” and an up-tempo version of “Ways To Be Wicked,” which was previously covered by Lone Justice, recorded at Applewood Studios in Denver, Colorado. Many of the additional tracks are taken from the French TV sessions, including acoustic gems, “Turning Point” and the Everly Brothers influenced “Keeping Me Alive.”

METAL

MOTORHEAD ‘WE TAKE NO PRISONERS’ THE SINGLES

Back in the golden era of the single of the 1970’s and 80’s, Motörhead would regularly assault the ears of chart listeners on a Sunday afternoon with a string of hit smashes in the rock charts of the time. The single as a format may have been less prominent from the 90’s onwards due to the dawn of the CD, but that didn’t diminish the calibre of the singles and promos that Motörhead continued to release. These mostly CD singles are now rare and highly collectable, so it only feels fitting for this era of the band’s bullet belt full of hits to be reappraised and released on the format that singles were born for, 7” vinyl.

We Take No Prisoners is a collection of the band’s singles spanning 1995 to 2006, and available as a nine 7” single box set and expanded double CD and digital editions. From crowd pleasers like the pummeling ‘Sacrifice’, through their unique cover of Sex Pistols, ‘God Save The Queen’ to the semiacoustic roots vibes of ‘Whorehouse Blues’, no one could deny their song writing prowess. With a selection of rare live and radio edits thrown in for good measure and a long lost promo interview with Lemmy and Mikkey Dee from 2004, this is a definitive collection of this era of the band and the songs that drove the success of the albums they were lifted from. STRYPER “WHEN WE WERE KINGS”

Stryper is back with their twelfth studio album, “When We Were Kings,” promising a perfect blend of their classic sound and modern heavy metal. With a diverse range of tracks, from the hard-hitting “End of Days” to the groovy title track and the emotional ballad “Betrayed By Love,” this album showcases Stryper’s versatility while staying true to its roots. Featuring innovative recording techniques and Michael Sweet’s expert production, “When We Were Kings” delivers massive guitar sounds and memorable choruses that will captivate longtime fans and new listeners. STRYPER’s current lineup includes original members Michael Sweet, Robert Sweet, and Oz Fox, along with bassist Perry Richardson, as they create what they consider their finest and most powerful music yet.

ANVIL “ONE AND ONLY”

Metallica to Slayer and beyond. Their latest studio album is aptly entitled ‘One And Only’: Thanks to their straightforward metal fueled by cutting riffs and catchy hooks, which the musicians continue to celebrate with admirable effortlessness and great passion. “We’re more like our old selves than we’ve been in years,” comments frontman Lips Kudlow on the new album, adding: “We’ve dropped all our more modern aspects, particularly the 90s version of Anvil. No sexual topics and no thrash speed songs like they featured on past albums.” ‘One And Only’, the band’s 20th studio recording to date, is available on AFM. The first single/video ‘Feed Your Fantasy’ has been out since April 5th, with the title track ‘Truth is Dying’ following as second lead single.

SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO LIVE ALBUM

LOVE AND ROCKETS 35TH ANNIVERSARY OF “SO ALIVE”

Named after the underground comic by the Hernandez brothers, Love And Rockets made seven records over the course of thirteen years. 2023 saw them reunite and play their first shows in 15 years and reissue all of their Beggars Banquet albums. There was a near-immediate sell-out of a limitededition box set, and the release of My Dark Twin, a 22-track companion to the band’s 1996 album Sweet F.A. containing 8 previously unreleased versions, and 6 unreleased songs from the Sweet F.A. sessions.

“So Alive” has been a continual favorite, so much so that last year when the band reunited and played their first show in 15 years at Cruel World Festival in Pasadena, Rob (D.J. K) and Scott (The Crystal Method) were in the crowd and were blown away by the performance. They decided to approach the band and they then agreed to dust off and unvault the 34 year old original stems to officially remix and reimagine “So Alive”.

In 2018, Byrds co-founders Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman teamed up with country star Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives for a 50th anniversary salute to the Byrds’ watershed 1968 album Sweetheart of the Rodeo, a work that helped usher in the whole genre of country-rock music. Now, the musicians announced the release of The 50th Anniversary Of Sweetheart Of The Rodeo on CD and vinyl. The album was previously only available as a limited-edition Record Store Day 2024 vinyl, and is now available on CD and 2LP Gold Vinyl.

A limited-edition bundle is also available for pre-order which will include a limited-edition poster, concert laminate, and tour T-shirt and will ship October 2024. The album includes 24 tracks, selected from various stops on the 23-city, 27-show tour by Stuart’s audio engineer and the album’s producer, Mick Conley.

ZEDD THIRD STUDIO ALBUM ‘TELOS’

GRAMMY Award-winning multiplatinum artist Zedd released his first album in nearly a decade, Telos, a 10song work that combines his classically trained roots with the singular dancepop sound that underpins his career.

On Telos, Zedd is joined by a diverse cast of collaborators: John Mayer and Muse, alt-pop stars Remi Wolf, Dora Jarand Bea Miller, modern Irish folk virtuosos the olllam, and the iconic voice of the late, Jeff Buckley.

Following a run of globe-conquering singles, Zedd’s third studio album was conceived as a music-lover’s album, complex and innovative at every turn, but without sacrificing the melodies and glitchy hooks fans of “The Middle” and “Stay” have come to expect. Nearly every song travels through moods, genres, and ideas — threads of world music, jazzy breakdowns, psychedelic soundscapes, booming bass, orchestral strings, and endless sonic textures. Telos offers a profound listening experience seamlessly transitioning through each record, from the alternately brooding and soaring opener,“Out of Time” with Miller, to the 6-minute, Bach-inspired finale,“1685” featuring the entirety of Muse.

STEVE FORBERT AT IRIDIUM

Legendary singer/songwriter Steve Forbert will release a new album, Daylight Savings Time, on September 20, 2024 via Blue Rose Music. He’ll perform at Iridium on October 4th. The Grammy-nominated artist arrived in New York City from Meridian, Mississippi in 1976 and slotted seamlessly into the “new folk” revival. He quickly won a major label deal with the Nemperor/CBS Records, where he released his debut, Alive on Arrival. It was on his second album, Jackrabbit Slim, that yielded his career-defining hit, “Romeo’s Tune,” that hit #1 on the Billboard Pop Charts

A songwriter’s songwriter, Forbert’s songs have been recorded by many, including Rosanne Cash, Keith Urban, Marty Stuart and Webb Wilder. In 2017, a tribute album, was released, with covers of his songs by twenty-one artists.

BUCK JOHNSON’S ‘TONGUE AND GROOVE’

Buck Johnson, the renowned keyboardist and backing vocalist for Aerosmith, The Hollywood Vampires (Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, Joe Perry, and Tommy Henriksen), The Joe Perry Project, and on tour with Ringo Starr, released his new album Tongue and Groove.

Since releasing his single, “Just Feel Better,” a song recorded by Steven Tyler, and Carlos Santana in 2005, he’s been on quite a journey. With his new album Tongue and Groove dropping on September 20 and the news about Aerosmith’s tour, Buck had to shift gears and has since been touring with Ringo Starr and teases what’s next for The Hollywood Vampires.

Tongue and Groove is a collection of songs Buck had co-written with lifelong collaborators such as Charlie Midnight (James Brown, Joe Cocker, Joni Mitchell), and was self-produced by Buck. The album showcases the roots-rock voice of Buck (“tongue”) with his classic rock production (“groove”). Buck enlisted talented musicians and friends on the album, including guitarists Damon Johnson (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Alice Cooper, Brother Cane), Peter Stroud (Sheryl Crow), Rob McNelley (Bob Seger, ACM Guitar Player of the Year).
