Delicious Dining at Tom, Dick & Hank!

Smokin’ Good Times:

Exploring Barbecue in the Atlanta Airport District By Kristel Rodriguez Peacock Barbecue restaurants are the hidden gems of the South, offering a tantalizing blend of flavors and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. In the Atlanta Airport District, you’ll find an array of BBQ joints that will tantalize your taste buds and have you coming back for more. So join us as we embark on a mouthwatering journey through College Park, Hapeville and Union City, exploring their unique barbecue scenes. College Park - Hattie Marie’s Let’s start our barbecue expedition in College Park, Georgia. Known for its vibrant community and rich history, this city also has some fantastic barbecue restaurants. One of the standout spots here is “Hattie Marie’s” and you’ll understand why as soon as you take your first bite. Hattie Marie’s son, Willie, moved to Atlanta in 1991. As his mother did in the 80’s and 90’s, and his grandfather before her, Willie embraced the family tradition while paying homage to his mother. Hattie Marie’s BBQ intends to bring the flavor and essence of South East Texas cooking to Georgia. Hattie Marie’s menu features many BBQ staples–pulled pork, brisket, ribs, and more. But what sets Hattie Marie’s BBQ apart is their “Dino-Ribs.” Also known as “Big Willie’s Dino Beef Rib,” these Dino-Ribs claim to be the “meatiest”

ribs in Atlanta and surrounding areas. A fan favorite is their Sunday Brunch from 10 am to 5 pm. They also have their BBQ available on Sundays. The friendly staff and the fun atmosphere make this spot a must-visit for both locals and visitors. College Park - Tom, Dick & Hank Next up, we head over to Tom, Dick & Hank. While promoting Atlanta night clubs, Owner Hank Johnson was exposed to short-order cooking. His passion for entertaining and promoting good times collided with his flavorful style of cooking and led him to open what began as a food stand in the heart of Atlanta’s midtown. That stand grew into the restaurants that we now know as Tom, Dick & Hank. Pulling from his music life, Goodie Mob’s “Cell Therapy” inspired the name. For Hank, it is all about good food, good drinks and good people. Tom, Dick, and Hank is a great place to have a good time. In addition to their main menu, the restaurant has a Happy Hour menu from 3 to 7 pm on Mondays through Friday. Their pulled pork is the stuff of legends, perfectly seasoned and smoked to perfection. The ribs are tender and their homemade sides, like mac ‘n’ cheese and collard greens, are the perfect

complement to your meal. It’s a flavor explosion that you won’t forget! College Park - Memphis Diva Queen BBQ Next, our barbecue adventure takes us to Memphis Diva Queen BBQ. The Memphis Diva Queen knows just how to do BBQ right. This pitmaster was born and raised on Beale Street, home of River City Blues and BBQ. Now, they’re making that ‘q with all the heart and soul, sharing it hot and fresh out of the window of a food truck. At Memphis Diva Queen BBQ, they smoke all meats low and slow to tender, juicy perfection. This method capitalizes on a smoky aroma and taste. Sink your teeth into hearty beef brisket and chopped pork or let all the meat simply fall off the bone in their tender ribs. Memphis Diva Queen BBQ also has homemade BBQ sauce to amp up the meaty flavor and homemade sides. Some of the customers’ favorites are the smoky BBQ beans along with just about the creamiest coleslaw, homemade peach cobbler and other sweet treats. Find Memphis Diva Queen BBQ cruising in the AAD or have them out to cater your next backyard shindig.

Barbecue Kitchen

College Park - Barbecue Kitchen We wrap up the College Park leg of the great BBQ adventure at Barbecue Kitchen. Barbecue Kitchen prides itself on its family-friendly environment. The restaurant’s interior is cozy, with a down-home charm that makes you feel like you’re dining in a close friend’s home. But it’s the food that truly steals the show. Their barbecue platters feature ribs that are fall-off-the-bone tender and the pulled chicken is a must-try for those who like a leaner option. Don’t forget to try their jalapeno corn muffins – they are the perfect accompaniment to your barbecue feast. Hapeville - Pit Boss BBQ and Spirits Now let’s take a pit stop in Hapeville and visit the Pit Boss at Pit Boss BBQ and Spirits. Wade McSwain was born in Dothan, Alabama and Tracy McSwain in Kent County, Michigan. A true example of North meets South. Wade had managed several chain restaurants and Tracy was educated in Food Systems Management. Together in September 2008, they opened Pit Boss BBQ. Following their passion, the duo have created a southern pit style restaurant rich in savory offerings. Pit Boss BBQ is a pit style barbecue restaurant specializing in authentic homestyle favorites. Pit Boss BBQ is committed to serving superior quality food for the most discerning appetites. Whether you prefer brisket, pork, or chicken, all of the meats at Pit Boss are smoked to perfection. For frugal foodies, Pit Boss BBQ has a variety of filling lunch specials during the week.

Taliah Waajid: World Natural Hair, Health, and Beauty Expo By Iesha Westmoreland In the vibrant streets of Harlem, New York, a transformative force emerged from the crucible of passion and entrepreneurial spirit. Taliah Waajid, a luminary hailing from this cultural epicenter, embarked on a journey that transcends mere business success—a journey marked by a profound impact on the natural hair care and wellness movement. Through the lens of the World Natural Hair, Health, and Beauty Expo, Waajid’s legacy unfolds as a beacon of inspiration, empowerment, and a celebration of the inherent beauty in diversity. As the founder of the Taliah Waajid Brand, Uncle Jimmy Products Men’s grooming brand, and the Kinky, Wavy, Natural Children’s product line, Waajid’s portfolio spans an expansive tapestry of beauty and wellness. Her journey, rooted in the rich soil of Harlem, led to the establishment of the largest pioneering show of its kind—the World Natural Hair, Health, and Beauty Expo held annually in Atlanta, Georgia. The expo, conceived almost 25 years ago, represents the nexus where Waajid’s vision coalesces with the collective yearning for confidence, tools, knowledge, direction, and opportunity. It stands as a testament to her unwavering commitment to uplifting communities, with a particular focus on the African American community. The overarching mission is not merely to showcase products but to foster a holistic experience that transcends beauty, touching upon wellness, self-discovery and growth. This modest initiative has burgeoned into an annual extravaganza that draws tens of thousands to the Georgia International Convention Center. The expo, a two-day spectacle, is more than a convergence of haircare professionals, buyers, distributors, and consumers; it’s a celebration of the diverse tapestry of natural beauty. In an era where wigs, lace fronts, sew-ins, and full frontals, known as Protective Styling, dominate the beauty landscape, the expo assumes a pivotal role in underscoring the importance of proper hair care for the hair that grows beneath these styles. It serves as a poignant reminder

for African American and multicultural women, men, and children to remain conscious of the inherent beauty in their naturally textured hair, steering clear of harmful chemicals and embracing a journey of self-love. As the curtains rise on the 2024 show, attendees can anticipate navigating through an astounding 300 vendor booths, immersing themselves in a dedicated kids’ corner, and experiencing rejuvenating yoga workouts. The expo extends beyond the confines of beauty, offering a platform for local pop-up shop vendors to showcase today’s hottest fashions. The theme for this year, ‘Come Flourish With Us,’ encapsulates the essence of the expo, with the accompanying motto, ‘Love You, Embrace You, Be You,’ celebrating individuality and self-expression. Mark your calendars for April 27-28, 2024, as the expo promises a sensory feast with riveting sounds from various artists, engaging barber battles, and other competitions that draw participants from diverse backgrounds. The inclusive nature of these competitions allows anyone to enter, with detailed sign-up processes available on the show’s website (https:// naturalhairshow.org/). Stay abreast of the expo’s dynamic evolution by visiting the show’s website and subscribing to the email list for ticket updates. In the grand tapestry of Taliah Waajid’s world, the World Natural Hair, Health, and Beauty Expo is not just an event; it’s a movement—a celebration of natural beauty, wellness, and the empowering embrace of self-love that resonates far beyond the confines of the convention hall.
