Hail and farewell to our partner, mentor and friend Cookie Smoak. She is retiring after 11 years from her position as President of the ATL Airport District-a Destination Marketing Organization for College Park, Hapeville, Union City and the area around Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Prior to her time with ATL Airport District (ATLD), Cookie worked for Delta Air Lines, Orlando CVB (Convention and Visitors Bureau) and the Atlanta CVB. She has been a driving force in destination marketing and the hospitality & tourism industries for many years.
One of Cookie’s most important achievements is the creation of our magazine: while working in Atlanta, Cookie and our other mentor and fellow publisher, Charlie Nelson, came up with the idea of publishing a magazine dedicated to the area surrounding the airport. This idea, drawn out on a napkin, became the Atlanta Airport Area Meeting Planner and Visitor’s Guide (the Guide-Atlanta Airport Area). The name has changed but we are proud to the “brain child” of these two avantgarde thinkers and industry leaders who have dedicated their lives to helping others.
During her tenure at ATLD, she and her team have accomplished so much: generating millions of dollars in revenue and working closely with economic
development directors to attract visitors, increase local business and keep hotel occupancy rates high.
She and her team have launched several programs: an annual cycling event called Spin The District which is the second-largest cycling event in Georgia, an award-winning webpage that allows visitors and meeting planners to explore the many options available to enjoy in the District, a volunteer program called NAVigators (Neighbors Assisting Visitors) where volunteers at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, area hotels and at the GICC (Georgia International Convention Center) welcome visitors to the area and developing marketing programs for the three cities ATLD represents.
Cookie has been honored by the tourism industry through the years. She was the first woman in the tourism industry to be selected as one of Atlanta Magazine’s Women Making a Mark award, given The Georgia CVB’s Larry Allen Tourism Award and she was recognized as a leader in Georgia Trend’s 500 list in 2023.
Cookie-we will miss you greatly but we wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Your knowledge, leadership, outgoing personality, and desire to make the ATL Airport District successful will impact us for many years to come.
