LOVB (League One Volleyball) Comes to the ATL Airport District
Volleyball is spiking its way into the Atlanta Airport District, and the excitement is electrifying. With the upcoming arrival of League One Volleyball (LOVB-pronounced “love”), the Gateway Arena and the area are set to become a hotspot for fans of this dynamic, fast-paced sport. This is no ordinary volleyball league—it’s a holistic ecosystem bridging the gap between youth programs and professional play, creating a seamless pipeline for athletes at every stage of their journey.
The excitement starts with LOVB Atlanta Volleyball’s First Serve-the first match of the year will be right here in the ATL Airport District-Wednesday January 8 features LOVB Atlanta vs. LOVB Salt Lake at the Gateway Arena. LOVB Atlanta’s team features athletes from six different countries and three-time Olympic medalist Kelsey Robinson Cook. Coached by Paulo Coco and Yoko Zetterlund, LOVB Atlanta’s First Serve will be a night to remember.
LOVB’s
Growing Presence Across the U.S.
LOVB is more than just a league; it’s a movement. Already active in cities like Austin and Salt Lake City, the organization has laid the groundwork for a national presence. Atlanta is one of the flagship locations where LOVB is looking to showcase its commitment to the sport and the community. Choosing the
By Kristel Rodriguez Peacock
Gateway Arena as their home base was a strategic decision: it’s an intimate venue that fosters connection with fans and positions LOVB alongside notable Atlanta teams like the Atlanta Dream.
Why Gateway Arena?
Atlanta’s vibrant sports culture and strategic location make it an ideal launchpad for LOVB. The city’s passionate fan base, coupled with its accessibility, ensures a warm welcome for the league and its athletes. The first serve in January will mark a historic moment not just for Atlanta but for the future of professional volleyball in the U.S. Rather than debuting in a massive venue, LOVB’s leadership opted for the Gateway Arena to prioritize community engagement. “We wanted to introduce ourselves to Atlanta and let Atlanta get to know us,” shared Alexandria Holt, a key point of contact for LOVB. The arena’s proximity to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport—the world’s busiest—will make it easy for visiting teams and fans to experience the magic of LOVB while connecting the league to a global audience.
Youth to Pro: The LOVB Ecosystem
LOVB is rewriting the script for volleyball in the U.S. with its unique youth-to-pro pipeline. Starting with athletes as young as eight years

old, the league’s club system nurtures talent, preparing players for collegiate opportunities and, ultimately, professional careers. With established youth leagues in Gwinnett and Roswell, Atlanta is already a corner stone of this pipeline.
LOVB’s youth program isn’t just about cultivat ing skills; it’s about creating opportunities. As these young athletes grow and transition through their volleyball journey, they’ll have a clear path to professional play within the LOVB league. This ensures a sustain able, community-driven model that benefits players at every stage.
What Fans Can Expect
Volleyball fans, get ready for high-energy matches, star-studded lineups, and unforgettable moments. LOVB isn’t just about the sport; it’s about the spectacle. Many athletes in the league have Olympic pedigrees and gold medals to their names. The inaugural season promises thrilling competition between six teams, including LOVB Atlanta and Salt Lake City, and a sold-out atmosphere that rivals any other major sporting event.
“Volleyball is the biggest sport for women globally, and professionally it’s becoming as hype as football or basketball,” said Holt. From jaw-dropping spikes to nail-biting rallies, LOVB is set to deliver world-class action on the court while fostering community off it.
Tia Jimerson: Atlanta’s Own Star
One of the league’s standout players, Tia Jimerson, hails from Atlanta. As a middle blocker, her presence on the court is formidable, and her connection to the city adds an extra layer of excitement for local fans. Watching homegrown talent shine on a professional stage is a testament to the opportunities LOVB is creating.
The LOVB season kicks off in January 2024, running for 14 weeks, with matches rotating between the six pro team cities. Fans in Atlanta can catch eight matches during the season, including two weekday games and two weekend events. The league also features the LOVB Classic, a mid-season, winner-take-all tournament debuting in February 2025. For tickets and the full schedule, fans can visit lovb. com, where season and singlematch tickets are now on sale.
LOVB’s Mission: Empowering Women Through Volleyball
LOVB is about more than just volleyball. Its mission is to create better life outcomes for women through the sport. By involving athletes in decision-making processes and offering professional opportunities beyond the court, LOVB is setting a new standard

The Hollywood of the South Continues to Grow
Known globally for its vibrant culture, music and fashion, Atlanta and nearby cities gained fame recently as the “Hollywood of the South.” What started with a few studios has transformed the area into a major hub for film & television production. This evolution is thanks to production giants like Atlanta Metro Studios, Tyler Perry Studios, Turner Broadcasting and others which have produced hit shows such as 24, Pitch Perfect 3, Agatha All Along, The Walking Dead and Tyler Perry’s many original television series. The ATL Airport District’s appeal to filmmakers is multifaceted, with its diverse landscapes, warm climate and strategic culture.
Helping to make the area accessible to new talent and production professionals is the main purpose for the Camera Ready Program. The liaison for South Fulton County is Dyan Matthews, President & CEO of the Greater South Fulton Chamber of Commerce. The program was launched in 2010 by the Georgia Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Office. With a growing demand for film locations & resources, the state of Georgia has not only risen to the occasion but has also taken proactive steps to bolster its appeal as a premier filming destination. Monthly meetings are organized for aspiring filmmakers & production workers eager to learn more about starting their careers in the industry plus fostering connections between newcomers,
By Iesha Westmoreland
film crews & area cities, making it easier for productions to get started. These meetings grew dramatically from a few hundred attendees virtually during COVID-19, to now thousands attending in-person.
A unique aspect of the local film scene is its diversity of filming locations, a result of both natural beauty and innovative repurposing of existing spaces. John Rooker, the visionary behind Atlanta Metro Studios, is an example of this adaptive approach. Previously, the site housed Shannon Mall, a local shopping center that opened in 1980 but gradually lost popularity over the years. Rather than letting the site fade into history, Rooker transformed it into Atlanta Metro Studios, a sprawling facility that offers an extensive range of production amenities. Built to be a “hotel for productions,” the studio provides not only soundstages but also office spaces, mill areas for set construction, and even an 80,000 sq ft mega-stage (once the largest of its kind in North America). With construction crews of up to 300 people during peak seasons, the studio has created thousands of jobs to help revitalize the local economy.
The Georgia Film Office has also played a vital role in promoting the state’s film-friendly environment. The office maintains a database of thousands of unique locations and connects
filmmakers with local contacts to facilitate filming logistics, from scouting locations to securing permits. This program is just one aspect of Georgia’s extensive infrastructure that supports the film industry. The state boasts 4 million square feet of stage space, and developers like Gray Television are working to create even more. In addition to its technical resources, Georgia offers an array of filming locations with easy access to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, allowing production teams to bring in talent & equipment from anywhere.
Cities such as College Park, Hapeville, Union City, Fairburn and others are locations in high demand for film industry professionals. These cities make filming easily accessible, provide contacts with local vendors and help streamline the permitting process. Local city officials such as Economic Development Directors are proactive in scouting filming locations & entering them into the Georgia Film Office’s database, making it easier for film teams to find the right spots quickly for productions like Zombieland, Black Panther, Den of Thieves, Stranger Things and more.
Fairburn partners with Fulton South Camera Ready to provide comprehensive production
resources, including access to the Georgia Film Locations Database and Locations Hub. The city actively encourages filmmakers to seek out Fairburn, assisting with site identification and planning. With approximately 44 registered filming sites, Fairburn has hosted productions such as Heels, Black Mafia Family, Bad Romance and others.
Another Camera Ready Community is Chattahoochee Hills, which boasts the kind of natural beauty and scenic charm rarely found in urbanized areas. Located just outside of Atlanta, Chattahoochee Hills is a favorite among filmmakers seeking an authentic Southern backdrop. Its unique environment has attracted productions such as Ozark, Bad Boys 4, NBC’s Found and more.
“Chattahoochee Hills has one thing that cannot be replicated on a traditional sound stage or studio – nature. The environment allows the production to remain the center stage while adding a level of visual authenticity that cannot
be simulated on a production set”, says Chris Montesinos, Chattahoochee Hills Economic Development Director.
Georgia’s rise as a film industry powerhouse has provided various opportunities for the state and reshaped the economic vision of many communities. As the movie & TV scene continues to grow, the industry continues to create jobs and international recognition. The need for collaboration, resources, and a steady influx of new talent makes programs such as the Camera Ready Program and Atlanta Metro Studios’ dedication to creating a seamless experience for filmmakers a standard for the future. With its combination of natural beauty, state-of-the-art facilities and strong industry support, this initiative has no signs of slowing down. The ATL District cities are on track to remain at the forefront of the film & television industry for years to come.
