HAPEVILLE Bustling with growth, the City of Hapeville is the epicenter of the resurgence for the Atlanta Airport area. Spotlight on the Southside This fall, Atlanta’s southside will become the home of a brand-new arena and entertainment facility when the doors of the Gateway Center Arena @ College Park officially open in November. The Arena is Metro Atlanta’s newest supersized venue for concerts, performances, convocations and more—and it has already announced its first long-term resident, the College Park Skyhawks basketball team.

Skyhawks

The G League is the NBA’s ofﬁcial minor league, and the College Park Skyhawks are the G League’s counterpart to the Atlanta Hawks. Casual fans may not have been aware of the team, in part because it was previously located in the frigid hinterlands of Erie, Pennsylvania, where it was known as the Erie Bayhawks. But the newly-renamed College Park Skyhawks have now flown south for good, where they’ll enjoy milder temps, closer proximity (only 11 miles!) to the Hawks’ downtown Atlanta home, and a warm welcome into the greatest basketball fanbase of all time (we’re only slightly biased). “Our entire organization, from ownership to basketball operations, is thrilled to have our new G League affiliate in College Park,” says Atlanta Hawks CEO Steve Koonin. “The Gateway Center Arena @ College Park is going to be the best venue in the G League and bring even more quality entertainment options to the southside. The south Atlanta community has been incredibly welcoming to us, and we’re looking forward to not only building but strengthening our

relationships there through basketball.” The Skyhawks can attribute some of that early buzz and goodwill to College Park native and Grammy award-winning artist 2 Chainz, who has joined the Skyhawks’ ownership group, led by Principal Owner Tony Ressler and Vice Chair of the Board and Hall of Famer Grant Hill. No stranger to the game, 2 Chainz had his own successful high school basketball career at nearby North Clayton High School and then at Alabama State University. Now, as a minority owner of the Skyhawks, 2 Chainz is already generating fan awareness and fostering a sense of community on behalf of the team, even lending his signature two-chain look to the exclusive t-shirt that was offered to early season ticket purchasers. The College Park Skyhawks will make their long-awaited Gateway Center Arena debut this November for the 2019–2020 basketball season. Not Just Hoops

In addition to basketball, the 100,000-square-foot Arena will host live concerts, community events, high school volleyball and basketball games, convocations, and cheerleading competitions, according to Arena manager Yanous Barner. “It will be a unique entertainment arena in the city of College Park and the surrounding area,” says Barner. Adding to the venue’s street cred and regional appeal, Fox Theatre has been selected as the

exclusive booking, marketing and consulting partner for the Gateway Center Arena. The Fox will consult in key areas, including digital media, marketing, programming, accounting, production, and general facility management. Their expertise is already helping to position the 5,000-seat arena as the ultimate entertainment destination in south metro Atlanta. Visitors to the Arena can expect a state-of-the art experience with two impressive high definition scoreboards, a pair of three-by-110-foot ribbon boards encircling the top of Arena, and television monitors located throughout the Arena. The technology inside this venue has been ultra-thoughtfully designed so that fans need never miss a moment of the action. Also, patrons are advised to come hungry! The Arena offers a unique and exciting concessions experience courtesy of its exclusive food and beverage provider, CulinAero by Proof of the Pudding. The high-end and ever-evolving menu goes way beyond popcorn and hotdogs, with four concourse-level concession stands— Southern Fried, The Hangar (Grill Station), Post Oak BBQ, and Tri-Cities Pizza—all serving up mouthwatering dishes that taste more “five-star dining” than “quick bite at the half.” Portable concession stands located throughout the arena will feature additional local restaurants and eateries, and alcohol service and Coca-Cola products will also be available.

Economic Impact College Park and surrounding areas—in fact,

the entire ATL Airport District—can expect a significant economic impact from the addition of the Gateway Center Arena. Boasts Barner, “The Arena will bring over 100 jobs to the Southside in the areas of food, entertainment, ushers, greeters, security, and maintenance.” That’s exciting news for an area that’s now projecting greater-than-average growth in its job market over the next several years. In addition to the surge of employment opportunities, the Arena will attract a great deal more visitors to the area from near and far, and that means more revenue for local businesses. College Park Main Street manager Renée Coakley explains, “The Gateway Center Arena @ College Park will be making its debut at a wonderful time for College Park’s Main Street and Virginia Avenue Program Area.” As Coakley points out, many great restaurants have recently opened throughout the area, giving basketball enthusiasts, concertgoers, and other arena visitors a plethora of options for their dining palates. “This new venture for the city will have a great economic impact on the Main Street area, and the local business owners are excited and ready for the challenge.”

Of Wrens and Ravens

The Wren’s Nest, the home of Joel Chandler Harris, author of the Brer Rabbit stories, was named for the birds that once took up residence in the mailbox out front.

“The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Masque of the Red Death.” The engagement sold out last year and had to be extended.

But a bird of a different feather will swoop in this Halloween season as the Edgar Allan Poe Experience again occupies the historic house in Atlanta’s West End neighborhood.

The Poe Experience runs Wednesdays through Sundays from Oct. 9 through Nov. 3. Beverages, some of them adult, are available for purchase to help steady the nerves.

The Raven, not the wren, will rule the roost.

The Wren’s Nest promotes storytelling in all its forms and believes that Harris would approve of the temporary takeover of his home. He must have been a fan; there’s a beautifully illustrated volume of “The Raven” in the Harris family’s library.

Brian Clowdus, artistic director of Serenbe Playhouse, conceived the Poe Experience after he visited the Wren’s Nest and was intrigued by its charming and sometimes spooky Victorian vibe. Clowdus stages immersive dramas based on disquieting chapters of American history and literature. Last October, his troupe debuted the Poe drama at the Wren’s Nest, turning Georgia’s oldest house museum into an asylum for the mentally ill. Its roster of patients includes a distinguished man of letters — Mr. Poe. During the show, visitors are led from room to room where they will have short, intense encounters based on Poe classics such as “The Raven,”

For more conventional tastes, the Wren’s Nest will also host a traditional Victorian holiday open house on Sunday. Dec. 8. The free event, which commemorates Harris’s birthday, features carolers, dancers, a visit from Santa Claus, and a house decked out in the Christmas finery of the late 1800s. What’s in a name? A city’s name is its trademark, its identity, the pride by which its residents exult in calling it home—and a connection to its history. The beloved cities that comprise the ATL Airport District, located south of downtown Atlanta and nestled around the world’s busiest airport, each have a rich history with humble beginnings. Let’s explore how our favorite Southside municipalities came to be.

College Park

Meet College Park, home to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and the Georgia International Convention Center. Well-accustomed to visitors, it’s aptly known as “Georgia’s Global City.” In 1890, when College Park was little more than a train depot, it was founded under the name Atlantic City. Later, in 1891, it was incorporated as the city of Manchester. It was five more years before it earned its current name, College Park, a nod to the Georgia Military Academy (now known as Woodward Academy, the largest independent school in the United States) and Cox College. Cox, a private women’s college founded in LaGrange, had just moved to Manchester in 1895 with a campus on Main Street, where College Park’s City Hall now stands. Today, College Park boasts the fourth-largest historic district in Georgia, with over 800 recognized historic buildings and homes. The

Main Street Business District—directly across from the College Park MARTA station—is vibrant and thriving. And Chick-fil-A’s Headquarters proudly calls College Park home.

East Point

Considering East Point is actually located southwest of Atlanta, the name can be confusing for folks not familiar with its rich railroad history. In 1870, with the help of 16 local families, the city was founded as a railroad terminus; “East Point” was the easternmost point on the Atlanta & West Point Railroad. A catalyst for industrial development, the rail line enabled two gristmills, a government distillery, various factories, a steam-cotton gin, and a sawmill. By 1880, East Point had its own weekly newspaper, The Plow Boy, aptly named for the expanding grain and cotton businesses around town. By 1887, the city was officially chartered. Steeped in industry for over a century, this eclectic city continues to be a place for enterprise, supporting businesses big and small. The charming East Point community is also home to quiet neighborhoods, a growing arts scene, the headwaters of the Flint River, and the Dick Lane Velodrome (the only steeply banked bicycle track in the state). The East Point Historical Society operates in an historic home that has been moved from the corner of East Point Street and Washington (where the post office is now) to Norman Berry Drive, on the site of the old community

swimming pool. Here, East Pointers like longtime Historical Society volunteer Charles Chambers preserve East Point’s days gone by. Ask him about his alma mater, William A. Russell High School—since replaced by Tri-Cities High School—or the streetcar that reigned over Willingham Drive back in the 1940’s, before cars were allowed to use it. These knowledgeable volunteers are eager to lead you on a carefully curated trip down memory lane.

Hapeville

One man is largely responsible for the city of Hapeville’s inception. In 1861, Samuel Hape left Union-loyal Maryland to serve in the Confederate Army as Second Lieutenant in the Second Georgia Regiment. After being wounded and discharged, he was sent to England to request a British loan on behalf of the Confederacy. Upon his return to Atlanta, Hape founded the still-active Atlanta Dental Supply, and with some other investors, purchased 500 acres of land on the Macon and Western Central Georgia Railroad. This would become the city of Hapeville, officially chartered in 1891, and Hape would become its first elected mayor. Visitors can explore Hapeville’s dynamic history at the Hapeville Depot Museum, located inside the old train depot. Filled with artifacts highlighting the city’s ties to aviation and the railroad, along with treasures donated to the depot by past and present Hapevillians, it’s affectionately referred to as “Hapeville’s Attic” by depot volunteers. The smallest of the cities at only 2.4 square miles, Hapeville may be mini, but it packs a lively punch. It’s home to art galleries, striking murals in every direction, a thriving city center, Delta Headquarters, Porsche Cars North America Headquarters (technically in the city of Atlanta but soon to expand next door to Hapeville), Arches Brewing (the town’s first brewery), and the original Chick-fil-A Dwarf House.

Union City

While Hapeville can give most of its establish-

ment credit to one man, it took two to found Union City: Charles Simon Barrett and Drewry Arthur Carmichael. Barrett became the president of the Georgia chapter of the National Farmers Union in 1905, and its national president in 1906. He sought to relocate the union’s headquarters and settled on Union City—in part thanks to the influence of Carmichael, an established farmer in the area and inventor of the “Carmichael Implements”—the combined seed and fertilizer distributor, single fertilizer and planter, the combined turning and subsoil plow, and the gin compress, all of which were manufactured in Union City. In 1908, a charter was established for the new town of Union City, officially named after the National Farmers Union. That same year, Carmichael gave away some of his land for the new town. He helped secure the Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic Railway to roll through Union City and worked to connect a track to the Atlanta and West Point Railroad. Carmichael was Union City’s first elected mayor and remained active in the National Farmers Union. Barrett remained union president until 1926. Today, Union City is a quiet bedroom community with a growing business district and one of the largest soundstages in the Southeast. It’s also home to one of the most celebrated (and reputedly haunted) eateries in the area, Green Manor Restaurant.

Before being shuttered by Ford in 2006, the Atlanta Assembly operated for 59 years on the Hapeville site where Porsche’s HQ and test track now stands.
