Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® To Host 69th South Atlantic Regional Conference in Atlanta By Sherri Owens & Corliss Hill White ATLANTA (January 7, 2022) -- Every frequent traveler comes through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport at least once in a lifetime. After all, it is one of the largest and busiest airports in the world. This “capital of the South,” entices visitors to venture into the diverse city and its outskirts that are filled with monumental and historical landmarks. Among the many guests the city will host in coming months are members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, known affectionately as AKA. Founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is the nation’s oldest Greek-letter organization established by African-American, college-educated women. Its national spotlight grew brighter with the election of one of its 300,000 members, Kamala Harris, as the first woman to ascend to the Office of Vice President of the United States of America. AKA will hold its 69th South Atlantic Regional Conference in Atlanta this spring, bringing in thousands of members to paint the city pink and green, the distinctive colors for which the sorority is well known. The South Atlantic Region, comprised of Georgia, South Carolina and Florida, is led by Carolyn G. Randolph who serves as the South Atlantic Regional Director. As stated in the sorority’s historical records, “Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® has exemplified its Supreme in Service mantra through groundbreaking social action initiatives and innovative social service programs that have brought hope, aid, and richer, fuller lives to hundreds of thousands.” Several sites

in the City of Atlanta bear witness to the significant impact AKA has made in Atlanta. Travelers can visit these sites and learn more about the sorority and its legacy of sisterhood and service. Here are a few to check out: Burial site for Marie Woolfolk-Taylor, a founder of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® Marie Woolfolk Taylor helped make the case for the sorority in conversations with the Howard University administration in the fall of 1907. Once AKA was established, she served as its first secretary, extended invitations to Howard sophomores who were eventually added to the founding group, and later became

the chartering president of Kappa Omega Chapter in Atlanta, where, as a social worker, she worked with the American Red Cross, YWCA, NAACP and Atlanta’s Community Chest, a precursor of the United Way. Woolfolk-Taylor is buried at the historic Oakland Cemetery, 248 Oakland Avenue SE, Atlanta, GA 30312. Founded in 1850, the historic Oakland Cemetery is the final resting place for many of the city’s most notable citizens. South View Cemetery. Burial site for Margaret Davis Bowen, the 9th International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® Margaret Davis Bowen was a teacher, secondary principal, university instructor and administrator. She served as president during the sorority’s Mississippi Health Project. The cemetery is located at 1990 Jonesboro Road SE, Atlanta, GA 30315. Mary Shy Scott Memorial Park Dr. Mary Shy Scott is the sorority’s 23rd International President. She served from 1990 to 1994 with a program focus on “Creative Strategies,” which included emphases on the Black family, health, political advocacy and the Ivy AKAdemy student outreach program. The former Harwell Heights Park at 3114 Collier Drive in northwest Atlanta was posthumously renamed in her honor in 2016. The sorority invested $50,000 toward its refurbishment which, paired with city funds, included an update to the baseball field, basketball court, pavilions, benches, parking lot and signage. Coretta Scott King Family Home Coretta Scott King, widow of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is known as the First Lady of the Civil Rights Movement. She was an honorary member of AKA. The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park expanded its boundary in 2018 to include the King family home located at 234 Sunset Avenue in the historic Vine City community of Atlanta, which became well known for its notable African-American residents such as millionaire Alonzo Herndon and civil rights activist Julian Bond. Gladys Knight Highway Grammy Award-Winner Gladys Knight, an honorary member of AKA, is well-known for hits such as “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “Neither One of Us,” and “I Heard it Through the Grapevine.” She was born in Atlanta where she began her show-stopping career. To honor her achievements, state lawmakers in 2015 named a portion of State Route 9, from Peachtree Street to 14th Street, Gladys Knight Highway. Continued on page 16

Atlanta’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University and Morris Brown College are all part of a family of HBCUs in Atlanta that also includes Morehouse College and Morehouse School of Medicine. Established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to serve the educational needs of African-American students at a time when they were generally denied admission to primarily white institutions, HBCUs provide a nurturing environment for African-American students pursuing higher education. These unique institutions encourage excellence while teaching the history, contributions and culture of its predominantly African-American students. The roster of HBCU graduates who have made significant contributions to society is long and notable. AKA has been a vital part of the HBCU student experience for more than a century with sorority members graduating and making their mark throughout the world. Many campuses have erected monuments or have outdoor plots marked as sacred spaces to pay homage to the organizations’ founders and members. When the South Atlantic Regional Conference convenes in April, more than 5,000 women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® will gather and leave an indelible mark in College Park and throughout metropolitan Atlanta by participating in community service activities, social justice awareness forums, health initiatives and voter education opportunities,” said South Atlantic Regional Director Randolph. The Georgia International Convention Center (GICC) will host the conference with ample space for parking, forums, meeting and workshop, banquets, galas and vendors. The conference will generate a significant

AKA Conference Continued from page 11 economic boost to the metropolitan Atlanta area. Attendees will enjoy accommodations in hotels in the City of College Park and throughout Atlanta. Restaurants and retailers will also enjoy the benefits that the conference brings.

“The South Atlantic Regional Conference has been held in the Atlanta area previously,” said Randolph. “We are excited to be back for our 69th conference. College Park longtime resident and Alpha Kappa Alpha member, Nicole M. Adams, serves as the General Chairman of the Conference.” In 2016, Atlanta was the host city for the 69th Boule, which is the organization’s international conference at which more than 20,000 members gathered. Although attendance at most of the sessions is restricted to members of the sorority, the general public will be invited to the Public Meeting which acquaints the host city with AKA’s mission and impressive record of service on a local, regional, national, and global level.

Carolyn G. Randolph, South Atlantic Regional Director of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc®

When the inimitable displays of pink and green signage, flags, banners and attire permeate the concourses throughout Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and the business and retail establishments around metro Atlanta, the beauty, presence and power of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® will be on full display and impossible to overlook.

Iconic Rap Group Nappy Roots Opens Atlantucky Brewing By Andrea Janise in the Heart of Atlanta As you walk through the doors of Atlantucky, Atlanta’s newest black-owned brewery, you’ll immediately notice three things: the beer, the art, and the music. Conveniently located in Atlanta’s Castleberry Hill neighborhood steps away from the Mercedes-Benz stadium, the iconic, Grammy-nominated rap group known as Nappy Roots are continuing their legacy with the grand opening of their brewery and taproom. Originally from Louisville, KY, and now living in Atlanta, the self-dubbed “crafty rappers” fused the locations of their homes to create the name of their brick-and-mortar brewery, hip-hop expertise, and country lifestyle they naturally emulate. Beginning as homebrewers, Nappy Roots’ Fish Scales and Skinny DeVille have consistently been involved in the craft beer industry including numerous compilations with breweries nationwide for the past five years leading to the official opening of Atlantucky. Their dream is now a reality. While hand cutting jalapeños and contemplating the name for their limited-edition Kolsch, DeVille reflected on how they first started, saying, “We started brewing towards the end of 2016. A five-gallon pot, one burner in the backyard using city water. Now we have Atlantucky.” He continues, “So far, the response has been great; people have really been receptive to the beers.” Their flagship beers include the light-bodied Hapeville Hefeweizen, the hazy OG Wheat, and the well-balanced Mile High Pale Ale.

The 6,000 square-foot, fully operational brewery also doubles as an event facility complete with a stage that can be transformed into almost any configuration. As musical artists by trade, the Nappy Roots have devoted a portion of their brewery walls to display artwork made by local Black artists. Justly, hip hop along with jazz and R&B is on rotation throughout the venue’s speakers to keep heads nodding. And those lucky enough to attend the grand opening of Atlantucky on February 4th, saw how the stage transformed the space into a concert venue when the Nappy Roots, along with special musical guests, performed. Cleaning the tap lines, Scales commented, “What we have here in Atlanta hasn’t been done in other cities. Atlanta has something that is very special; its diverse and people really work together here…way more than I’ve seen in other places, and I’ve been all over the world.” Taking a pause, he said from the heart, “Atlanta is welcoming to all people. This is a magical place.” Atlantucky not only has the craft beer covered, but they also garner a collaborative relationship with local, up-and-coming food vendors like Amorous Tacos, ATL Seafood Bags, Rollin Up Eggrolls, Chicken Trap and Unbelievegan who have regular pop-ups at the brewery. It’s their mission to make every hour a “Nappy Hour” at Atlantucky. Check out their weekly happenings on their IG @ Atlantucky or visit www.atlantucky.com.

Chick-Fil-A Dwarf House Hapeville’s own Chick-fil-A Dwarf House is now reopened. After nine months of hard work and anticipation, the renovated space now offers a full-service dining room, drive-thru with increased capacity, and mobile order pick-up area for added convenience. While the restaurant has a new, modern feel and its capacity has doubled, many of the restaurant’s iconic elements and menu remain unchanged. Read on as we open the “Little Red Door” to everything The renovated, Chick-fil-A Dwarf House has to offer. Upon arrival to The Dwarf House, guests are greeted by the statue of Chick-fil-A Founder S. Truett Cathy. Truett founded The Dwarf House in 1946. When it first opened its doors, The Dwarf House had a total of four booths and 10 stools earning it the name The Dwarf Grill because of its small size. These stools and booths are honored and memorialized in the restaurant’s outdoor pavilion that also offers a play area for children. According to the renovation’s lead designer Jenn Allstun, “staying true to the original and preserving space while paying homage” to the restaurant’s history was an integral part of the renovation. She wanted the design to be inclusive to those who already frequent the restaurant and to those who have yet to discover it. She encourages guests to “visit more than once

and to take a tour because there is a lot to see.” Allstun says, “It is an experience like no other,” and that the only thing she would change about the renovation is that she wishes the “reopening could have happened sooner.” However, like the Chick-fil-A sandwich recipe, the renovation could not be rushed. The attention to detailis noticeable. One wall features pictures of about 2,500 Chick-fil-A stores that combine to create a largerimage of The Dwarf House. The menu panel board in the diner shows dates next to the menu items instead

Chick-Fil-A Continued from page 36 of prices. The blue dots next to certain items highlight items on Truett’s original menu. Some of these items include the famous “hot brown” (chicken mixed with cream sauce, cheese and bacon),hamburgers, coleslaw and lemon pie. In the diner, guests will notice that the booths are labeled with the names of long-time servers to paytribute to them. Similarly, Zelma’s Pie Shop is aptly named after long-time pie chef, Zelma Calhoun. Manyof the items within the restaurant are reclaimed and repurposed. This gives the restaurant its modernfeel without sacrificing its original charm. For example, the lanterns that used to light the diner’s boothsnow hang in the vestibule next to Zelma’s Pie Shop.

Counter Seating

Fifteen bronze dwarves can be found throughout the restaurant. Each one holds an item that payshomage to a beloved Cathy family member or long-time team member. Zelma’s dwarf, for instance, holds a mixing bowl which alludes to Zelma’s contribution making and serving pies for over forty years. The bronze statues are not the only dwarves in the building. The moving mural that showcases dwarves carrying an empty bag into a cave and exiting with a full bag was also preserved after being in the restaurant for many years. Outside are 4 globes of varying sizes. One is 46 centimeters in diameter, the next is 57 centimeters, the next is 67 centimeters, and the last is 122 centimeters in diameter. The sizes of each globe align with a renovation year. These globes and years mark pivotal stages of growth in The Dwarf House lifecycle. 1946marks the

restaurant’s opening, 1957 marks the year a chimney and porch were added, 1967 marks theyear a larger store with a red roof and the little red door were added, and 2022 marks the most recentrenovation. Details like the sizing of the globes are intentional and once again pay tribute to everythingthat happened to make The Dwarf House what it is today. Over 500 hours of research including interviews with customers went into the preparation for therenovation. The interviews and customers’ stories are one of the key components of The Dwarf House’shistory. The story of Truett asking his regulars to taste test his chicken sandwich recipe until it wasperfected still echoes throughout the restaurant. On the restaurant’s actual walls are the stories of patrons who share the memories of their experiences at Chick-fil-A. The Dwarf House’s General Manager, Kevin Moss, shared that his favorite memory at Chick-fil-A was working with Truett himself and watching how he interacted with the customers. “He spoke to every customer and every customer was important,” said Moss. He went on to say, “Truett was committed to this restaurant and this community.” Like Truett, Moss is also committed to The Dwarf House where he has been for over 25 years. He continues Truett’s legacy of making customers feel important and is quick to offer a seat at his favorite booth. With its irresistible food and proximity to the airport, The tiny but mighty Dwarf Grill grew into The Dwarf House it is known as today. Now with its updated features, The Dwarf House is fully equipped to provide an even better dining experience for customers. With so many sights and history, be sure to make time to look around and take a tour while you “Eat Mor Chikin”. The Dwarf House is located at 461 N Central Avenue and is open from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday with tours happening multiple times throughout the day. For the latest updates on The Dwarf House, visit the restaurant’s website or Facebook page.

Family Life Ministries The Biblical story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:29-37) has, since 1982, taken on new meaning in Hapeville as the “Good Samaritans.” Family Life Ministries, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, has taken that familiar parable to new heights by becoming “Good Samaritans” to the Tri-Cities area as well as Palmetto, Union City and Fairburn. The ministry, headquartered at 612 College St in Hapeville, does not accept governmental funding or support, and depends solely on donations of food from individuals, families, and businesses. COVID concerns have taken a toll on volunteers who help with distribution of the food, both curbside at Family Life’s location and in its home delivery service. “Prior to the pandemic, we had approximately 48 regular volunteers and, in addition, the organization did not have curbside service but we were open five days a week and saw clients inside,” said Jane Gunter, Co-founder and Director of Family Life Ministries. “However, now, due to the COVID crisis, we have about 16 volunteers,” she said Gunter said she and her husband Ted developed the plans for Family Life Ministries in 1981 with the organization actually opening a year later. “Our ministry was designed to help those who had fallen through the cracks,” Gunter said.

By Bill Baldowski

“Each person we assist is different and each of their stories regarding their circumstances is different.” The ministry serves any resident in its service area who is in need of food. In addition, the ministry also has partnered with the school system, the VA and senior organizations in order to meet needs, Gunter said. However, the ministry not only has a positive impact on those they serve, but also those who serve as part of the ministry. Katheryn Bennett, the ministry’s administrator, has served at Family Life Ministries for 22 years, the first 15 as a volunteer before joining its small staff. She joined the ministry after working for a number of years in what she termed “corporate America.” “I never felt I made a difference working in corporate America and I wanted to do something that was meaningful,” she said. “To know what I am doing actually makes a difference in the lives of people we serve, is so rewarding and meaningful to me,” Bennett said. Hapeville Mayor Alan Hallman said he is proud to join the communities and churches who support the ministry. “When Family Life Ministries opened, they brough much needed services for this area and they have been a shining light for us,” he said.
