HAPEVILLE Bustling with growth, the City of Hapeville is the epicenter of the resurgence for the Atlanta Airport area. The designated Main Street City is home to the original Chick-fil-A Dwarf House and Wells Fargo Processing Center. Hapeville is a walkable community, a little over two miles in size, that offers a charming historic downtown filled with restaurants, shopping, a train depot museum and a lively downtown park.
UNION CITY On the edge of the ATL Guide area, Union City is the gateway to the South Fulton Scenic Byway and is home to the second largest sound stages in North America. Forest Park is the largest city in Clayton County-home to the Atlanta State Farmers Market and Gillem Logistics Center (1,170+ acres & home to Kroger Co.’s new 1.2 million sq.ft. distribution facility). Comfortably located a little over 3 miles from Atlanta’s airport, it is revitalizing its Main Street with a multi-phase mixed use development to bring new residents and new jobs into the area.

Spring into Fun By Kristel Rodriguez Peacock
The sun is beaming down on you, the scent of dogwood is intoxicating, and the winter layers are melting off. That can only mean one thing: it’s springtime in the South! Like the azaleas, the ATL Airport District begins to flourish in the springtime. With everything from bike races to renaissance festivals, a good time is guaranteed for all. To help you on your way, our busy bees have been working hard to bring you the buzz on the ATL Airport District’s hottest events. For Fun Lovers Spin the District is the semiannual event series that combines all the laid-back fun of a neighborhood block party with the excitement of a high-intensity bike race. Now in its third year, the series will host its spring events May 2nd and 3rd. Hold on to your saddle, cowboy, because this action-packed weekend has
East Point Jazz Festival
something for everyone: races, crawfish, games, tacos, beer, and mechanical bulls! On Saturday, cruise down to Hapeville for Cyclo de Mayo and La Fiesta del Cinco, double the fiesta and the fun; then keep the action rolling with Sunday’s Bayou Block Party in College Park featuring a jazz brass band and an epic crawfish boil. Both events are free to attend. Bike wheels won’t be the only hot wheels in the District this Spring. Beginning the second Saturday in April, Hapeville’s Coffee & Chrome Car and Motorcycle Show gives chrome enthusiasts the chance to show off their automobiles and motorcycles. Attend as a spectator or show off your own customized, antique ride. Are you a sports fan? Don’t strike out and miss Hapeville’s Opening Day celebration on April 18th. First up at the plate will be the Exchange Club 5k followed by the Community Parade with the games and opening ceremonies rounding out the bases at 12 pm. Then on May 16th, shoot and score tickets to Gateway Center Arena @ College Park’s first WNBA game of the season. The Atlanta Dream will be playing against the Chicago Sky at 7pm. Here’s hoping this season will be a slam dunk! Speaking of seasons, spring is all about the arts. On April 18th, film buffs can enjoy Who Will Write Our History, the final film on the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Film Makers. This movie about a secret group fighting against Nazi propaganda aims to prove the pen is mightier than the sword. Catch this film

in Hapeville’s own Christ Church and Carriage Park. End scene! Love drama and theatrics? Academy Theatre in Hapeville is the place for you. BattleActs! By Laughing Matters will bring out your inner critic. This monthly improv competition features professional improv performers fighting for your approval. Do you like variety? Nunsense opening night is on April 24. Featuring cheeky musical numbers, talent acts, and more, this variety show starring a group of nuns will have you laughing nunstop. For Music Lovers This spring, live music will descend on the District like a fine green layer of pollen— but, like, in a good way. The area’s newest entertainment venue, the Gateway Center Arena @ College Park, has a number of captivating performances lined up, beginning with K-pop supergroup AB6ix on April 18th. For those who like to listen to music and relax, Wednesday Wind Down begins May 27th. Taking place in East Point’s City Hall, each Wednesday Wind Down will feature a headliner as well as live performances by local artists. A variety of food options and adult
beverages like margaritas, beer, and wine are available for purchase (must be 21+ up and show a valid ID to purchase adult beverages). Enjoy this free event while you–as the name implies–wind down. Feeling jazzy? The East Point Jazz Festival is returning April 25th. Bop to the beat at this free event happening in City Hall from 5-9 pm. What better way to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month? For Food Lovers Foodies rejoice! From farmer’s markets to breweries, the ATL Airport District has delights for every palate. Start your gastronomic adventure at the market. Union City and East Point both have farmer’s markets offering fresh food options that are locally grown right here in the District. Worked up an appetite buying groceries? No biggie! Food trucks to the rescue—sort of! Instead of racing to you sirens a-blaring, they’ll be parked at the East Point Food Truck Court, standing by for snack emergencies. A variety of delicious food choices will be available from some of the most popular trucks in the Atlanta Metro area.

Enjoy delicious food tastes from Southside restaurants paired with a side of music and entertainment. If you don’t want the fun to stop, here are even more events to look forward to in the coming months: Movie Nights Under the Stars at Jess Lucas Park in Hapeville is on the third Friday in June and July. Salute to the Red, White, & Blue in East Point is an all-day 4th of July festival with food, music, a carnival, and even a fireworks show.

The Southside-Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Atlanta Metro Studios and the Porsche Driving Experience. But there’s more-an undiscovered wealth of culinary experience is on the Southside. Southern style cooking, BBQ, ethnic choices and more: the Southside offers everything-elegant fine dining, family style restaurants and on the go choices. This huge variety of restaurant cuisine is being highlighted in an inaugural event in the city of Hapeville. “Taste the Southside @Hapeville” -May 30 from 10 am to 4 pm at Jess Lucas Y-Teen Park in Hapeville, featuring samplings, with the purchase of taste tickets, from many of the area’s restaurants. In addition to delighting the taste buds, the event will also feature Southside arts and music with such artists as singer Fracena Byrd with The Academy Theatre. Byrd said she was not only thrilled, honored and overjoyed to be taking part in the event but was also very humbled to do so. “Our residents and visitors to the city for this event will love it as there are so many activities involved and an opportunity to sample some delicious local restaurant cuisine,” she said. Vocalist Terry Dukes from Jazz Matters will also perform along with other local artists. The event will be emceed by “Casual” Cal Dupree,
Vice President of the National Black Radio Hall of Fame Atlanta chapter and Che Mack (actress and TV personality) will DJ the event. Dukes commented that this event would “further accent the greatness of Hapeville and the Southside area. This area has undergone change and growth and has come a long way…I want this event to not only accent our restaurants, but the many elements that have gone into making the Southside a great area.” Other activities include: a student cooking competition, karate demonstrations by Tony Young All Star Karate Academy, Tai Chi performances, a demonstration by movie stuntmen and a kids’ chalk art area. The Hapeville Depot Museum and Visitors Center plus art exhibits sponsored by the Hapeville Arts Alliance will be available for viewing. The event is sponsored by the Hapeville Exchange Club, The ATL Magazine, the South Fulton Chamber of Commerce, Martino-White Printing, and others. Portions of the proceeds will go to Exchange Club Programs of Service. Club President Mark Adams said, “This started out as a vision of the Hapeville Exchange Club to highlight the Southside and the city of Hapeville about two years ago. This event truly highlights the vibrant and thriving nature of the Southside, as well as highlighting the continued growth of the cuisine of our local restaurants and the area’s art and entertainment.”

Some things inevitably go out of style (here’s looking at you, shag carpets and Bieber bangs), but the Georgia Renaissance Festival is here for a good time and a long time. This year the festival celebrates 35 years of jousts, jugglers, and joy for the whole family. Mount thy trusty steed and ride along for a behind-the-scenes look at a truly longstanding Georgia tradition.

Festival Background The Georgia Renaissance Festival first lowered its metaphorical drawbridge to the public in 1986. Owner Jack Sias felt Georgia could benefit from such an event, and after successfully starting one in Maryland, Sias and a business partner migrated south to start this one. The Georgia Renaissance Festival has been faithfully recreating ye olde England right here on the Southside ever since. According to Dave Dorrell, the festival’s general manager, first time visitors are typically surprised by the size and permanence of the festival. “Many people hear the word ‘festival’ and assume it is like a pop-up arts and crafts fair in a park,” says Dorrell—but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In order to make visitors truly feel like King Henry VIII’s loyal subjects, the GA Ren Fest has converted 32 acres of land near Fairburn into a “fully-realized

Renaissance Festival Continued from p 42 The Carasello ride, a Renaissance-epoque carousel, is particularly popular with the little ones, but the GA Ren Fest has rides to suit every age and excitement level. The Pirate Pub Crawl is a popular place for adults (21 and up) to hang with their mateys. Led by a rambunctious band of pirates, this pub crawl happens twice a day.
